MESSAGE FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT Dear Tech Family— I had the honor of meeting with most of you at our recent mid-year review gatherings when we talked about the state of the school and the challenges of following our mission and operating a premier technology high school program. During those meetings, I was reminded of the great level of commitment that permeates our Tech family, from families making sacrifices to send their sons here, to teachers—many of whom are alumni themselves— who are unwaveringly committed to your son’s academic and spiritual education and future success. We are a rare group, and I am blessed to be a part of it, both as an alumnus, a past teacher and, now, an administrator. The Tech’s reputation for offering a top-notch education and developing the whole person travels beyond our campus walls, throughout our community. I recently attended Monterey Park’s popular Lunar New Year Festival with staff, students and parent volunteers. We had the opportunity to share the Bosco Tech story with hundreds of folks and meet with prospective students. While we met many who know our well-earned reputation and who have great respect for the work being accomplished in the lives of young people; for some, it was the first time they’d heard of our school. I listened to our students answer their questions—it was moving to hear them explain the opportunity they have been given and why they are so proud to be Techmen Tigers. ALUMNUS’ FAMILY FOUNDATION ESTABLISHES ENDOWMENT KARL FRANCIS LOPKER (EL ‘69) 12/19/51-8/25/18 Bosco Tech is very grateful to the Pamela and Karl Lopker Family Foundation for its recent establishment of the Karl Lopker Endowed Merit Scholarship through a gift of $200,000. The endowment recognizes the best and brightest Bosco Tech students, based upon academic excellence and citizenship. Karl Lopker (EL ’69) was the Chief Executive Officer of QAD Inc. and co-founder of Deckers Outdoor Corporation. The companies are both publicly traded (NASDAQ: QADA and NYSE: DECK) with the former providing software to manufacturing companies and the latter designing and distributing footwear under such well-known names as UGG and Teva. During his years on the Tech campus, Karl was a member of both the Letterman Society and the National Honor Society. He served on Student Council and was active in the Pep Club. He played basketball and soccer on Karl graduated from Bosco Tech’s the school’s junior varsity and varsity teams. Electronics technology in 1969. Karl supported himself during college by making leather purses and sandals. While earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from UCSB, he sold his wares at craft fairs and on Southern California beaches. The craft fair endeavor soon turned into the establishment of Styled Steer, a Goleta-based company that spun-off Driftwood Dan, developer of iconic neoprene sandals, and, ultimately, the internationally popular Deckers Outdoor Corporation. In need of software for the growing company, Karl and his wife and business partner, Pam, developed QAD which they later made available to other manufacturing organizations. The astounding effectiveness of MFG/PRO, a program that could be run on multiple computers, soon met with world-wide success. Pam continues as President and Chairman of the Board of QAD. The Lopkers’ hard work and foresight have yielded an operation that now has offices in 18 countries, customers in more than 80 countries, and thousands of employees, and jointly earned them the title of UC Santa Barbara Alumni Association's "Distinguished Alumni Award" in 1998; Pam is also a UCSB graduate. “If the end of the world was announced, I would try to get to wherever Karl was, as I’m certain Karl would come up with a way to stop it,” said one friend, a prominent Santa Barbara attorney, of Karl’s can-do management style. The Lopkers are known for their philanthropy as well as their business acumen, supporting United Way, Santa Barbara Foundation and UCSB, among many other non-profit organizations. Karl is survived, and greatly missed, by Pam and their two children, Karl Bo and Juliana Lynn. His greatest hope was for his family to live, happy, healthy and productive lives. We are grateful for that mindset that led him to accomplish great things, and for the Lopker family’s generosity to the Tech!

The student teams worked diligently on their creative, insightful experiments and were able to provide intelligent, thoughtful answers to judges’ questions. TECH INSTRUCTORS LEAD ARCHDIOCESE WORKSHOPS Kudos to Bosco Tech instructors Mr. Claude LeBlanc and Mr. Gabriel Gonzalez who led workshops during the recent Archdiocese Faith Formation Day for teachers throughout the Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara area. The event, “Faith Across the Curriculum,” was graciously hosted by faculty at Bishop Amat High School. Mr. Le Blanc presented scientific evidence for God and matters of faith and Mr. Gonzalez’ session focused on integrating the Bible and Catholic identity across the academic curriculum. The annual event is intended to refresh and encourage instructors in their own faith and in their interactions with students.
FTC ROBOTICS RANKS NEAR TOP NATIONALLY Congratulations to the Tech's hardworking and talented FTC robotics team, the Gearheads, who placed third in their most recent meet, despite strong competition. In national rankings, we are ranked in the top 3% overall and our software for autonomous operation is ranked in the top 1%! Great job, gentlemen!
IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE REMINDERS Please refer to the Parent-Student Handbook for policies regarding early pick up and drop off of your sons who may have appointments during the regular school day. - Early pick up: Please submit a written request from the parent/guardian to Attendance Office staying that you will be picking up your son during the school day and the reason. Have your son turn it in by 7:55 a.m. on the day. See handbook for full details. - Returning to campus: Please be sure to send a written, physical note with your son when they return to the campus after an absence. The note should contain the reason for and date(s) of absence. If the student was absent as a result of a physician’s visit and/or orders, please bring a doctor’s note state the date the student may return and any restrictions involved. NHS MEMBERS MAKE CHRISTMAS BRIGHT FOR FARM WORKERS —BY DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI RELATIONS & SPECIAL EVENTS VIKI BATTAGLIA
Bosco Tech's National Honor Society took on the mission of doing a gift drive with a local Catholic church that supports migrant farm workers in the Central Valley of California. The workers are often underpaid and do not have the day-to-day items that we often take for granted. The NHS members who participated purchased a Christmas tree to put up in the church, kept the tree filled with ornaments listing items that the farm worker families could use, sorted collected gifts, and then delivered them to the farm communities in Fresno at the start of January. Senior Justin Recinos lead the effort, with help from NHS members Andrew Arenas, Isaiah Benitez, Aaron De Castro, Nathaniel DeBerry, George Flores, Timothy Galvan, Enrique Gomez, Eric Jurado, Dennis Marciuska, Raphael Napinas, Lorenzo Pedroza, Hayden Ramirez, Antonio Robles, Stanley Quiros, Henry Rosas, Anthony Sosa, Isaiah Ton, Arakel Tscharanyan, Jaime Uy, Miles Vazquez, and Joshua Wall and many others. Also, thank you to senior Aaron Dominguez for pitching in when we needed help. Thanks to them and all who donated to the gift drive; 50 families and 50 individuals were blessed and were very grateful for this unexpected support. “It was a truly unique and eye opening experience, the likes of which I have never seen before,” said Justin of the experience. “We have been preparing for this trip since early November, cutting ornaments out with donation ideas as well as gathering and sorting them into categories for families with children and people young and old. I never would have imagined how difficult their lives would have been, because as they say, ‘Seeing is believing.’ Despite hearing about this all the time, I could never paint a picture in my mind. I was able to see them as humans rather than people on a slip of paper, as we conversed with them about their stories and the countless struggles they still face to the very present day.” “It was a blessing to be a part of their lives even if it was for a brief moment,” Justin continued. “I could see the impact we had on them as they smiled and thanked us, treating us like family.” Great job, gentlemen!

IMPORTANT TUITION ASSISTANCE UPDATES —BY TUITION ASSISTANCE & ENDOWMENT FACILITATOR MANUEL VILLARREAL
This notice is for families wishing to receive tuition assistance next school year. The following items are things you need to know about 2019-2020 tuition assistance: 1) The deadline for current families to apply for tuition assistance for the 2019-2020 school year is February 15, 2019. Anyone who applies after the February 15 deadline is not guaranteed an award. 2) A student must maintain their Merit G.P.A. to keep their merit funding. This refers to a 3.5 G.P.A. for $1,500 awards, and a 3.0 G.P.A. for $500 awards. Students below their Merit G.P.A. in June will lose eligibility for Merit finding. 3) Families may appeal after tuition awards have been distributed. Appeals will be heard from February 1528. 4) Tuition Assistance Application forms can be found on the school’s website. Parents or guardians must: - Fill out the application, - Sign and date, - Upload the 1040 taxes (only the first two pages), - Upload the W-2 form or December paystub, - Pay online or at the Business Office. SENIOR ADAM GOMEZ’ WORK CITED IN MEDICAL JOURNAL We're so proud of Tech senior Adam Gomez (CSEE) who interned last summer at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Adam had the opportunity to work with Dr. Sophie Terp, Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at Keck. Dr. Terp has been conducting research on civil monetary penalties resulting from violations of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) involving psychiatric emergencies. The findings of the in-depth research will appear in an upcoming issue of Academic Emergency Medicine, a peer-reviewed medical journal. Adam has been acknowledged in the publication for his contributions to the management and review of data used for analysis—quite an accomplishment for a high school student! Adam also interns with the Amgen Biotech Experience, through the Pasadena Bio Collaborative Incubator (pictured).

OH, THANK HEAVEN FOR 7-11! Oh, thank heaven for 7-Eleven! Bosco Tech welcomes our newest neighbor and is grateful for their generosity! In late January, Paul Sandhu, franchise owner of the new San Gabriel Boulevard 7-Eleven store (right down the street from the Tech), and Karen Huynh, 7-Eleven Field Consultant, toured our campus and made a donation of $711 to the school. The franchise in interested in helping support the Tech. Welcome to the neighborhood, 7-Eleven!

EDISON INTERNATIONAL GRANT Very special thanks to Edison International (Southern California Edison (SCE)@SCE Communities) for generously awarding Bosco Tech a $10,000 grant. $5,000 is for the school’s FRC Robotics program and $5,000 is for tuition assistance. We are extremely grateful for Edison's ongoing support!

Description: To enroll your son for the 2019-2020 school year, a registration packet containing all necessary documents will be mailed to your home. Please fill out all documents, sign and date prior to returning them. Your son’s packet can be submitted on February 5-7, between the hours of 5-8 p.m., or at the Finance Office from 8 a.m.–4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

BLACK & GOLD GALA RECOGNIZES TECH LEGENDS —MONSIGNOR JEREMIAH MURPHY & MR. On April 6, at the Black and Gold Gala, “An Evening Under the Stars,” we will celebrate and show our gratitude for a legendary teacher and a leader in the faith. These honorees inspire us all in their consistent belief in the Salesian mission and in their appreciated support of the students of Bosco Tech. Please join us that evening for dinner, both live and silent auctions, and a time to recognize the stars among us! All proceeds benefit Bosco Tech’s tuition assistance program. BOSCO TECH IS NOW ON WECHAT—WORLDWIDE PRESENCE Bosco Tech is now accessible on WeChat (web.wechat.com), the popular Chinese/ English multipurpose social media app. Especially helpful to our international students and their families, WeChat is considered China’s “app for everything” because of its wide range of platforms and functions. It has been predicted that WeChat will become a competitor of the major credit card companies because of its convenient payment features; the app is currently being used by more than one billion people worldwide.

BOSCO TECH MUSIC NEWS —BY BAND BOOSTER ADRIANA WALL
The year started very early for our DBTI Band and Boosters. Early, as in 4:30 in the morning on January 1, 2019. Over 60 band members and Boosters worked as ushers at the famous Pasadena Rose Parade to raise funds for their upcoming Heritage Festival in Nashville, Tennessee, where the band hopes to bring back a medal once again for Bosco. (Many thanks to our loyal volunteers for their hard work to benefit the band!) The Nashville, Tennessee WorldStrides Heritage Music Festival is a four-day academic experience that brings together the best directors, student musicians, and adjudicators in the United States to compete in a national competition. From March 28 to March 31, Bosco students will compete against programs from other states, visit Vanderbilt college, learn about the roots of country music, and gain historical context by touring the Belle Meade Plantation which has been preserved in its original state since 1820. This competition is an excellent opportunity for students to take the education learned in the Bosco Tech. Music Program and apply it outside of our classroom walls.

MODEL U.N. CLUB BEING FORMED —STUDENT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Bosco Tech has formed a Model United Nations club. Involvement in Model UN or MUN allows students to participate as a country's delegate in a conference with other schools that simulates the negotiations, discussions and lively debates of the United Nations. Along the way, participants learn about current events, international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda. Members also develop important skills such as public speaking and presentation, persuasion, analysis of situations, research skills and critical thinking. “Students can develop and enhance a number of academic skills including public speaking, presentation skills and research; as well as soft skills including collaboration, negotiation and persuasion,” said Mr. Robert Currie, club moderator and long-time Tech instructor and administrator. “Model UN participation is an obvious plus for college applications.”
