SALESIAN DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Dear Bosco Tech family, We are family! In addition to being an old school dance anthem that sticks in your head, this is the 2017 theme of our worldwide Salesian community. “We are family!

Every home, a school of life and love.” It is within the framework of the family that our young people learn and grow through loving instruction, and become the mature adults the Lord has destined them to be.

Our families may take many forms, but one thing remains unchanged in the 21st century—looking toward the Holy Family, we will find so many things to emulate and so many things by which we can be inspired. Holy does not mean perfect or without challenges or obstacle; instead, we strive for consistently peaceful, loving interaction in the midst of life’s demands. I’d like to share with you a prayer that is the cornerstone of this year’s theme. May its message and petition guide us in the coming months: Prayer to the Holy Family Jesus, Mary,and Joseph, In you we contemplate The splendor of true love; To you we turn with trust.

The helpful session will cover the college admission process, scholarship opportunities, information about FAFSA, financial aid, and other available resources.

Also, during the workshop, you'll learn more about Bosco Tech's dual enrollment program (see story below), a great way for your son to earn college credit early.

JUNIORS ARE EARNING COLLEGE CREDITS THROUGH DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM Several Bosco Tech juniors are currently earning college credit while completing their high school coursework. Through an agreement with Cal State, Dominguez Hills’s College of Arts & Humanities, the students are completing university-level classes in subjects like Political Science, Astronomy, Health & Lifestyles, and Television, Video, & Film.

“By completing these general education classes, our students are earning college credit while still in high school,” said Director of Tuition Assistance and College Counselor A.J. Pimentel. “This gives them a big advantage and puts them far ahead of schedule regarding their college coursework, no matter what their future major or university will be. We’re extremely proud of these students for the dedication and maturity they have shown in successfully fulfilling the demands upon their time.”

Tech students can take two classes per semester and earn up to 24 fully transferable credits, if they begin the coursework during the fall semester and work continuously. The classes are conducted once a week, via video conferencing, on the Tech campus and are offered at a greatly reduced rate. Plans are in the works to expand the agreement between CSUDH and the Tech, increasing the number of classes available. PSAT RESULTS MEETINGS ARE FEBRUARY 1 WHAT DO YOUR SON’S SCORES MEAN? Parents are reminded that on Wednesday, February 1, PSAT results will be returned to freshman, sophomore and junior parents in the school’s library, starting at 6 p.m. The meeting for freshman parents to receive their sons’ PSAT results will begin at 6 p.m. Sophomore and junior parents will receive their sons’ results at 7 p.m.

These brief but informative sessions include a detailed explanation of how the PSAT results should be interpreted and a question and answer time will be featured.

BOSCO TECH INFORMATION NIGHT IS FEB. 9 —PLEASE LET YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS KNOW Do you know a family member or friend’s son who might be interested in attending Bosco Tech? The school will host an information night for prospective students and their parents on Thursday, February 9, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

A question-and-answer panel session will feature current students, faculty and parents, and admissions materials will be distributed. During the evening, freshmen can sign up to shadow a current student through a typical school day.

“The Information Night is a great opportunity for middle school students and their families to meet Bosco Tech’s knowledgeable, caring faculty, ask questions of our student body, and learn more about our unique university-directed, STEM-based curriculum,” said President Xavier Jimenez.

FRESHMEN SELECT TECHNOLOGY MAJOR Congratulations to our freshman class on the selection of their technology majors that will be their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) emphasis during their remaining years at Bosco Tech. The formal selection process took place on January 7.

This important decision was made after several months of preparation that began last July in the Freshman Summer Program (FSP), a five-week introduction to engineering and applied sciences that exposes students to Bosco Tech’s five technology majors. Upon completion of the FSP, the students spent the fall semester rotating through three of the five majors to receive a more in-depth experience in those technologies. Based upon a positive recommendation from instructors, good grades and parent attendance at Technology Information Sessions, the students made their selection.

“The process is an important step in allowing the students and parents to make an informed and careful educational decision,” said Mr. Jeff Krynen, Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction. “Congratulations to each freshman on the informed and well thought-out selection of his major.”

IMPORTANT 2017-2018 REGISTRATION NEWS Registration for 2017-2018 for Current Students When: Tues. & Wed., March 14 & 15, 5-8 p.m.

Where: MPR- Multi Purpose Room located next to the ACE building.

Description: To enroll your son for the 20172018 school year, a registration packet containing all necessary documents will be mailed to your home. Please fill out all documents at home, sign and date. Your son’s enrollment packet can be submitted on March 14, 15 or 16 between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m. An enrollment fee of $600 will be billed and paid through FACTS Management on March 16, 2017 for all current students. A student service fee of $750 per student, will be billed and paid through FACTS Management, in two installments of $375 due on April 14, 2017 and July 14, 2017.

SPORTS UPDATES BASEBALL STEPS UP TO PLATE FOR SICK KIDS —BY BASEBALL BOOSTER MRS. ROSE GARCIA

During President’s Weekend in February, La Salle High School will host its annual “All In” baseball tournament to help benefit Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

More than 50 local high school teams will participate in the three-day weekend using Monrovia, Pasadena, Bosco Tech, and La Salle high school’s home fields as tournament game sites.

Bosco Tech’s baseball booster parents will help staff the event (snack bar, grill, and front gate). Our team will perform field maintenance between games and also play in the tournament. Profits are made from entrance fees, snack bar sales, and sponsorships from families/ business. The Tigers will donate money raised from entrance fees and from cash donations to this noteworthy charity event.

In late spring, player representatives from the participating high schools will deliver the money to the hospital and tour the facilities. Bosco Tech team captain Brent Hirokawa represented our school in 2015 and cocaptain Anthony Garcia represented the team in 2016.

Coach Eric Agajanian feels confident that with more community knowledge, sponsorship, and participation, the fundraising can gain momentum to benefit the children.

The participating high schools raised $6,000 last year and more than $9,000 in 2015. Pictures are from when the teams donated the money last year 2016. This year will be the third annual tournament. It was started by Coach Harry Agajanian (Coach Eric Agajanian’s father) in his last year as La Salle’s head baseball coach. Coach Agajanian began his 30-year high school baseball coaching career right here at Bosco Tech, before moving on to Arcadia High School and La Salle High School. His son, Eric Agajanian is the current Bosco Tech Head Baseball Coach.

All students and families are invited to come out and support this worthwhile cause; Bosco Tech students get in free! A baseball bat will be raffled each day of the three-day event with all proceeds benefiting CHLA. It was an emotional time for the players and brought many to tears.

SPORTS UPDATES TRACK & FIELD TEAM ON TRACK FOR A NEW SEASON —BY ASSISTANT TRACK & FIELD COACH BRAD STOLZ

Bosco Tech’s track and field team has already been working hard for the upcoming season. Their conditioning for the new season started after Thanksgiving, with breaks for Christmas vacation and semester exam week.

Because of cold and rainy weather, the hour-and-fifteen-minute sessions have frequently taken place in the Yurak Athelic Center and in the weight room, rather than on the track.

Therefore, this has not been wasted time, but very productive in getting the team members’ bodies ready for their training in their individual events, that begin with the start of the second semester.

An Urgent Request for Your Help: Bosco Tech’s track and field team pole vaulters are in need of a new or used pole vault pit. Their current one is quite old and cannot be used so our vaulters are unable to practice. The minimum amount for a new pit is about $13,000. We are looking at options to buy, or rent to buy, a new one or possibly a good used one. If you are able to obtain a grant from a company, or are able to donate toward a useable pit, we would greatly appreciate any help you can give!

BOSCO TECH MUSIC NEWS —BY BAND BOOSTER MR. JUN REYES

The DBTI Music Program hosted the Annual Winter Concert on December 15, 2016. Concert goers were treated to wonderful holiday music performed by the Bosco Music Appreciation Class and the DBTI Concert Band.

Thanks to all the teachers, boosters and family volunteers that made the night so memorable.

Congratulations to Daniel Hosseini, Michael Garcia, Yifan Zhang and Anthony Reyes for being accepted to the 2017 California State University LA High School Honor Band. This program provides the opportunity for outstanding musicians from high schools across Southern California to come together for a weekend of music.

Participants will receive instruction from Cal State LA faculty, rehearse with their fellow musicians and perform a final concert for friends and family. The program is scheduled for the weekend of February 10.

Each month, Music Director Daniel Almanza and the band leaders select a student as Player of the Month to recognize the student’s hard work, dedication and commitment to the band program. Congratulations to the following students for being chosen as Player of the Month.:

The Bosco Tech Music Program applied and received a 2017 grant sponsored by the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Symphonies for School. We were awarded 70 tickets to see the Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in February 2017. Additionally, Mr. Almanza will be attending workshops with Los Angeles artists to implement a curriculum around the concert our students' will attend. This is a great opportunity for students to learn beyond the classroom walls. Our students' will connect the theory and history found in their books and hear it modeled by some of the best musicians in the world. Thank you to the Philharmonic's Education Department for helping fulfill our mission of ensuring that the students of Bosco Tech and the youth of the San Gabriel Valley develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts through music education and other meaningful learning experiences.

WHAT’S NEXT The DBTI Royal Tech Marching Band will perform on the school’s upcoming Information Night for prospective students, set for the evening of January 25. All families are welcome!

SHAKESPEARIAN BATTLE COMES TO LIFE —STUDYING “JULIUS CAESAR” IN A NEW WAY It wasn’t ancient Rome, but young warriors faced off across the grassy plain (campus mall), shields and (foam) swords in hand. The trumpet and battle cry were sounded and the standards were raised as the opposing troops ran headlong into the fray.

These are sophomores and a few juniors in Mr. Tony Arguelles’ Composition class who had just completed reviewing Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.” The students were recreating the play’s civil war setting.

Anticipating this day each year, the 80+ students make their own armory, sound the battle horns (band students), and video tape the ’war.’

“This is a great opportunity for students to work collaboratively on creative projects and have fun outside of the classroom,” said Mr. Arguelles.

DONATIONS FOR GALA EARN DOUBLE SERVICE HOURS! Bosco Tech’s annual Black and Gold Gala is Sunday, April 30, 2017. The Development team has been working extremely hard to make this the most successful fundraiser to date, with the proceeds benefitting students receiving financial assistance. We need your help!

We need printed materials, floral centerpieces, music, decorations, etc. We also need items for the silent and live auctions. Donated items may include: - Gift cards - Store certificates - Movie or theme park passes - Gift baskets - Sporting tickets or equipment - Travel certificates or time shares As you may know, donations qualify as part of the required parent service hours (excluding bingo hours).
