STRENGTH.

As I shared in my spring President’s report, this past academic year has presented unusual challenges, not just for Bosco Tech, but for all Catholic schools. Sadly, many have closed their doors, and overall enrollment has seen a significant decline.

Despite facing adversity, I can confidently share that Bosco Tech remains strong because of the resilience of our Tech family. We remain strong because: • Our faculty and staff have diligently worked to maintain a fully integrated curriculum unmatched in the nation.

• The Tech is blessed with a fortified foundation built upon faith, hope and love—strengthened by Don Bosco’s emphasis on reason, religion, and loving kindness.

• The tremendous generosity and confidence of our alumni, donors, and foundation partners have been a sustaining support during a challenging period.

In fact, Bosco Tech has been in full-growth mode during this time. We have taken the opportunity to reassess our position and identify opportunities to innovate, enhance, and grow. The Tech is in a fortunate financial position, with strong balance sheets and a growing endowment that allows more than 70% of our student body to be awarded financial aid each year.

I am happy to share a few of the academic year’s highlights: • 100% graduation and college acceptance rates again • A move to carefully managed in-person instruction, athletics and extracurricular activities • The launch of a vibrant strategic plan developed by our Board and Administration that will focus on the next 5-10 years. This includes a facilities master plan to modernize our 67-year-old campus.

• A revitalized Alumni Relations program focused on meaningful engagement and networking opportunities within our tremendous alumni community • The addition of eSports to our Athletic program, gaining national rankings in their first season These successes, along with many others, and the ability for our school to continually innovate and enhance our programs, facilities, and process is made possible by the generosity of our constituents. Their support both allows us to maintain our nationally unique education model and gives us the flexibility to relentlessly pursue new opportunities and innovations in technology education.

Daily, I am reminded how blessed I am to be a part of this vibrant community that is so effectively preparing young men to meet their future. I am truly grateful for the forward-thinking people around me who see the difference a Tech education makes!

CONSISTENCY.

The old expression “May you live in interesting times” took on new relevance shortly after I became Chairman two years ago. Honestly, I don’t believe any of us ever anticipated living through such days as these.

Through it all, I find that the consistency of that which is familiar and immutable has been sustaining for me during ‘interesting times.’ In my work on behalf of Bosco Tech, I am encouraged by evident results of those ageless attributes, especially during the past challenging months.

And while the Tech unfailingly upholds timeless values and strengths, I am consistently impressed by the integration of the innovative and the embrace of the forward-thinking that is a cornerstone of its successful approach to educating young people, both today and in the future.

Not surprisingly, the Tech has used this period wisely, as a time of reflection, analysis, and forward thinking. Board members, administrators, and other stakeholders have spent the past year carefully deliberating and developing a strategic plan to ensure that the Tech’s future endeavors are well advised and that they consistently adhere to proven Salesian precepts to educate young people from all walks of life.

The resulting strategic plan that was recently adopted by the Board of Trustees addresses four major elements of Bosco Tech’s future: 1. Expanding and enhancing the academic program 2. Improving and renewing the facilities 3. Strengthening governance and organizational capacity 4. Reinforcing the school's financial position From refining our mission statement to more effectively reflect today’s Tech and emphasize our future vision, to developing a ten-year facilities masterplan, these key efforts are focused on making Bosco Tech’s name a familiar one as the only integrated Catholic, college-prep technology school in the nation, while upholding St. John Bosco’s overriding imperative to teach with reason, religion and loving kindness.

On the pages of this report, you will read stories of individuals, teams, programs, instructors who are inspiring…. As you read, you will see that 2020-2021 was, indeed, a valuable, albeit ‘interesting,’ year well spent.

DEVELOPING CHARACTER. Recent IDEA graduate Antonio Robles’ nomination for the 2021 L.A. Archdiocese Christian Service Award was not a surprise to anyone. The award, presented annually to students for significant contributions to their community, is made for a young person like Antonio.

In addition to serving on the Tech’s Youth Ministry Core Team, the Liturgy and Worship Committee, and Character Assembly sound crew, the honor student is active in his home parish, San Gabriel Mission. He works with the Youth Ministry, Confirmation, and Catechism programs, and with Gabe's Place Camp, a summer school and day camp based at the Mission. He also is a member of the parish’s popular Marimba Choir. “Although I credit my parents for really showing me what it meant to help others build, make, and create things with love, the experiences I have made over the years have added to developing my mindset,” explained Antonio. “Making a difference in someone's life really gave me the energy from within."

“As a Catholic, my duties are to share the Good News to others, and to me, personally, that means to show others to always value and appreciate even the smallest things. I attended an elementary Catholic school which was run by the Dominican Sisters of San Jose. They taught about showing love to everyone, no matter who they were, a moral value that I always hear at home. That really set in stone how I treated others. This is important because, in Youth Ministry, we are called to give, because in giving you grow not just as an individual, but as a group, or in this case, as a community.

“The moment I walked onto the Tech campus four years ago, I knew I’d made the right choice.

Walking through the techs and talking to the teachers made me realize that Bosco Tech was the school for me. Not only have I learned so much academically, but also spiritually, making me a more mature and responsible young adult, who can take on various tasks in not just one specific area, but multiple.

“Bosco Tech had all the necessary tools and resources for me to not just look at one field of engineering, but at several options, and help me choose which one was best for me. It also had this aura of brotherhood and faith, that when I stepped on campus, it made both my parents and I feel welcomed.”

“For years, Antonio has volunteered his time and energy for others,” said Mr. Rudy Herrera (AU '79), Coordinator of Youth Ministry.“The tremendous hours of service he has given have not only made a difference at Bosco Tech, but he’s also made that same kind of difference at his parish. In fact, Antonio makes a positive difference everywhere he goes and in whatever projects he involves himself. The hours he’s volunteered working in ministry, through his work with confirmation programs, youth groups and our own ministry program have undoubtedly inspired others. We pray for, and can only imagine how much of a difference he will make during his college years and beyond!”

A vital member of the school’s FTC and FRC robotics, lacrosse and volleyball teams, Antonio plans to pursue a career in Civil Engineering. After earning several college acceptances and generous scholarship offers, he has chosen to attend the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

Godspeed, Antonio; we are confident that you will make a positive difference on that campus too!

ESPORTS

RISING TO CHALLENGES. OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTERACTION & COMPETITION

Earning national rankings may not have been in Coach Hector Cruz’s (MAT '16) immediate plans when he established the school’s first eSports CIF team this academic year. But the 29 students making up Bosco Tech’s varsity and junior varsity teams who compete in seven competitive online games far exceeded all expectations, reaching the top 0.5% in U.S. rankings. Despite distance learning, the students had fun team building and competing in a unique, creative way.

“My friends are surprised when I tell them my school has an eSports team,” said MAT sophomore Jeremiah Solano, eSports Club President & CIF General Team Manager. “Not many schools have the privilege of having a team available to them so they’re shocked that we get to play video games and compete against other schools. And now that some colleges are giving scholarships to students who are talented players, we wanted to bring new opportunities to Bosco for students who are interested in the multifaceted eSports industry as a whole.”

Coach Cruz, a 2016 Tech alumnus and college digital athlete, initially developed the idea for the Tech’s team and club to provide a means for home-bound students to interact, use their digital skills, and enjoy healthy competition and much-needed camaraderie. In addition to playing against each other in a non-regulated setting, club members joined streaming parties to cheer on the CIF team.

They employ their STEM skills and talents, Cruz said, by creating supporting graphics, text, and social media digital content to promote the program and the internationally rising sport (overall awareness of the fast-growing industry doubled from 2015 to 2019, and the market is valued at more than $1 billion in 2021.) More importantly, the Tech’s group has created what Cruz calls a home.

“As a teacher, I understood the importance of bringing ‘Bosco’ to students who couldn’t be on campus,” said Cruz, who teaches web and mobile applications and fine arts. “It made sense to create a virtual space for them and, as CIF had just established a new official eSports platform, the timing was right. The boys have found a nice community in the 40 or so members of the club.”

Representing the school in the same way a traditional sports team does, varsity team members have even earned letters. The teams competed against digital athletes from participating California high schools in titles such as Rocket League, League of Legends, Smash Ultimate, Madden 21 Trios (PS4), and FIFA 21 Trios (PS4). Additionally, club members have been competing in Valorant and Fortnite tournaments.

“We’re incredibly excited that our students are able to compete together on the gaming platforms, in something that brings so much joy to young people, especially during distance learning,” said Coach Cruz. “eSports is providing the opportunity for social interaction and team building, and it’s a great opportunity to develop sportsmanship, a sense of community, and develop advanced conceptual thinking.”

Rising to the challenge of forming an official CIF team while under pandemic circumstances, the young digital athletes displayed agility and resiliency. As health and safety prohibited freshmen from making new friends face to face and kept upperclassmen from seeing their classmates, the hugely popular and highly competitive eSports varsity and junior varsity teams, and its supporting eSports club, created an environment to play together, strategize, and virtually high five team mates. And that made them the envy of their non-Bosco Tech peers!

DEDICATED FAMILIES. After touring the campus as an eighth grader, IDEA junior Johnny Serbin was so determined to attend Bosco Tech that he did not apply to any other schools. And mom and dad, Johanna and John, are equally committed to the Tech and its programs.

“We chose Bosco because it was a private school, provided a better curriculum, a tech program, and gave our son the opportunity to succeed. It’s a faith-based school, keeping him focused for his future endeavors,” said Johanna.

As Football Booster president and secretary, Mr. and Mrs. Serbin dedicate their time to furthering those opportunities and fostering an inclusive atmosphere.

“We chose to get involved because we saw what the program could be—a family,” Johanna explained. “While we didn’t get to move forward with many of our plans this year because of the pandemic, we got a little piece of heaven when we were scheduled to play two games this season.”

“It was such a turning point for all of us as a football family, we were going to get to see our sons play, after a long uncertain year for football, and we were all glad we didn’t miss it,” she said. “With the support and help of our families, our coaches, and student athletes, we had a successful senior day event, managed to make our seniors feel a little bit of normalcy, and gave a glimpse to all the other athletes that this would, one day, be for them as well.”

“On the evening of our first game, a few parents and students reached out to say how much they enjoyed the day and how special they felt being a part of football.

The boosters did it! We managed to make everyone feel welcome and be a part of our family, and we helped create memories for these young men and moments that will last a lifetime!”

“TO EVERY PARENT, IF YOU ARE THINKING OF GETTING INVOLVED, DO IT.”

In addition to playing football, Johnny also plays volleyball and is a member of the Ambassadors Program, Letterman Society, and National Honors Society. He has recently gotten involved in the campus’ car club. Off campus, he has served as a catechism teacher’s helper at East Los Angeles’ Resurrection Church.

“These four years seem like forever, but they fly by so quickly. To every parent, if you are thinking of getting involved, do it,” urged John. “It’s JOHN SERBIN such a rewarding feeling when you are working hard and planning for BOSCO TECH PARENT games and events and the young men notice and take a minute to say ‘thank you.’ Johanna's favorite statement from a team member’s parent was ‘“Mom, they really care about me!’ And we do! We treat every student athlete as if they were our son. Every one of them is a priority!”

They are philosophical about their commitment. “It’s important to give back; leave what you are given better than the last person, make it better, and make lasting impressions on these young men so that when they grow older, they too, do the same.”

And Johnny? “Bosco Tech has given me more than I could’ve asked from a high school: great friends, great teachers, great extracurriculars,” he said. “It feels like I can graduate and apply what I’ve learned here to the real world. I am glad to have chosen this school and will cherish the memories I’ve made here.”

ALUMNI OPPORTUNITIES. Giuseppe “Joe” Napoli (DR ’91) and Don Gibbs (DR ’69) are among several past graduates actively working to revitalize the Tech’s Alumni Association. They tell us a little bit about how and why this is especially important at this time: DON: Tech alumni now number around 10,000 and live around the world, not just across the country. Relying on phone trees or postcards--even email--has become ineffective. Active alumni, and especially board members, have rededicated themselves to establishing effective means to allow alumni brothers to stay in touch with those they already know, build new relationships, and stay current with developments at the Tech.

JOE: The Alumni Association has put together a really strong assortment of events to reunite alumni with the Tech. In the past, it felt as though the school would reach out when funds were needed. Today’s requests have been more about involvement with the school, other alums, and future alums.

Past alumni engagement was good, but limited. You had to come to the Tech, or to a Tech event to get involved. The pandemic introduced zoom meetings and that provided us an opportunity to connect in more ways than just about ‘the Tech.’ We got to see inside one another’s lives--the motorcyclist, guitarist, gamer, car nut, whatever! What we had in common was more than just the Tech. The zoom meetings not only gave us a glimpse into one another’s personal lives, but the technology made it possible for people to realize you don’t need to be at the Tech to support the Tech.

DON: The biggest external changes in the last year or two are making better use of channels like social media and physically going out to areas far from the Tech to make it easier for alumni to gather. The monthly Gear and Tech Connection publications announce Tech/alumni events and the website, boscotechalumni.com, is a place to find fellow alumni with a sketch of their careers and willingness to mentor.

JOE: The unique nature of The Tech provides us with opportunities to reconnect with the school, with alumni, and with current students. There are many alumni who have a lot to offer to students, and to the Tech.

I would love to see alumni share their stories with current students. We have all been through a lot. We have all used our skills from the Tech to get us through life. Although I sell real estate, my experiences in Drafting help me visualize how to best remodel a property.

When an instructor shares that with a student, the student may think it’s lip service. When an alumnus says it, then there is substance to the message.

DON: If you think you did well by the Tech and have something to offer, talk with us. This is a great way to give back to the school for the benefit of the current and future students. And gain some memorable experiences along the way!

THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO GIVE TO BOSCO TECH: • CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS: a charitable remainder trust can benefit you now by providing a lifetime income that is tax advantaged, save you income taxes now, reduce your estate tax later and benefit Bosco Tech.

• CONTINGENT BENEFICIARIES: Naming Bosco Tech as a contingent beneficiary can benefit the Tech when the unexpected happens, but without loss if the normal course of events takes place. Contingent beneficiaries can be used in wills, life insurance and annuity contracts, pension accounts, IRAs, and 401(k)s.

• STOCK GIFTS: If you give an asset with a long-term capital gain, you never have to pay the capital gains taxes, but get the same amount of tax deduction as if you gave a cash donation. This can be a huge tax savings for you, and still provide the Tech with all the intended benefit. Please note that the asset must qualify for longterm capital gains treatment and have a ‘gain’ to benefit.

• GIFT MATCHING PROGRAMS: A long-time strategy for helping the Tech is to use an employer matching gift plan for your donation. In these plans, your employer will make a donation alongside yours to the Tech, which can double your gift.

Furthermore, your spouse may be eligible for a matching plan on the same gift, turning it into a triple benefit.

• LIFE INSURANCE: Some people use life insurance as a way of multiplying their gift.

For a small amount (the insurance premium), they can leave a large amount (the death benefit) to the Tech. If you don’t have dependents, don’t forget the insurance provided by your employer. Consider naming Bosco Tech as your beneficiary.

• PENSIONS, IRAS, 401(K)S AND ANNUITIES: When paid out at death, these accounts may be taxed in excess of 75%, after you add up federal and state income taxes, state death taxes and federal estate taxes. If you name the Tech as your beneficiary, you sidestep all these taxes. If you’re married, you probably want to name your spouse as the primary beneficiary, but consider naming Bosco Tech as your contingent beneficiary.

With safer-at-home orders in place as important regular fundraisers approached, Bosco Tech acted accordingly, and supporters of the school responded positively and generously.

• A socially distanced Bosco Tech Golf Classic featured coordinated tee-offs timed at safe intervals, an on-the-course boxed lunch, and golfers wearing face masks. Happy for the opportunity to break the confines of home for fresh air and open space, tee times sold out early and golfers contributed more than ever; event proceeds increased by 95 percent from 2019.

• Bosco Tech’s annual Black & Gold Gala became a virtual 'ungala' event, allowing the inclusion of ‘attendees’ from as far away as the east coast.

Pre-recorded videos, pieced together by noted photographer Pablo Aguilar (DR ‘88) made for an entertaining and easy-to-view at-home event.

The honorees, Mr. Bob Currie (EL ‘64) and Edison International, were spotlighted, the symphonic band performed virtually and parents and students gave testimonials. Gala proceeds surpassed all expectations, growing by 39 percent over the previous year.

• Looking for an alternative to congregating indoors, Bosco Tech began offering drive-up Bingo. Players logged onto an app and honked their horns when they won. As health restrictions lifted, a hybrid program was introduced. Proceeds from the hugely popular weekly gathering are on track to far surpass those of last year, possibly doubling normal revenue.

• Responding to the on-going need for support through the school’s Tech Fund, which provides pivotal operating funds, Bosco Tech’s supporters gave generously toward the day-to-day demands of educating young men while keeping tuition costs reasonable for struggling families.

“Bosco Tech’s advocates and donors really are a remarkable group,” said Philip Consuegra, Bosco Tech Director of Development and Strategic Initiatives.

“They saw that this was a highly unusual year for non-profit fundraising and how great the need was during this time, and responded most generously. That level of dedication is incredibly appreciated!”

New Ways to Tell Our Story

“While this has been an extraordinary year full of pandemic-related obstacles, it was surprisingly very rewarding,” said Bosco Tech Director of Admissions John Garcia. “When the world situation demanded an adjustment to the way we introduce ourselves, we more than rose to the challenge, switching formats and finding new ways to meet families where they are, and to let them know what Bosco Tech can do for their sons.”

“Instead of traditional face-to-face meetings and group tours, we found creative ways to share our unique program.

We had to be adaptable in presenting the advantages of a Tech education.”

Private in-person tours were still available to those who preferred, scheduled days apart. The Admissions team also hosted virtual tours, capturing particular areas of prospective student interest on tablets during live Zoom sessions.

“Among creative adjustments, I think what really had the greatest impact was the fact that none of our existing programs stopped because of the pandemic,” John said. “For example, our popular Summer Scholars program was modified accordingly and went virtual, with students actually building projects in their homes during real-time sessions with teachers and other participants. For the students’ sake, we made every effort to not miss a beat, kept it fun and interactive, and our incoming freshman families appreciated that.”

In addition to virtual Open House and introductory meetings, student Ambassadors created a series of brief video messages that could be shown to prospective students and their families; each message contained a vital advantage to attending the Tech from current students. “In the video, I specifically discussed the technologies, emphasizing their special curriculums that prepare students at the college level,” said senior Nathan Chao. “I want them to know how great our tech program is and that Bosco Tech truly offers something that not many other high schools can.”

ACADEMICS, SCHOLARSHIPS, HONOR ROLL • Bosco Tech students continued to excel across disciplines. 139 students took a total of 309.

Advanced Placement exams through the College Board. The Tech offered 16 AP classes this year; while students took exams in 5 additional subjects on their own.

• 76% of the Bosco Tech student body made the honor roll in both the first and second semester grading periods.

• The class of 2021 had both graduation and college acceptance rates of 100%, consistent with past years and far exceeding national averages.

• IDEA senior Aidan Chavez was named a 2021 Edison Scholar and granted a $40,000 scholarship from Edison International to pursue his STEM studies in college.

FAITH, GIVING, OUTREACH • ASB officers reconstructed the student-led program to be more efficient and effective, with adjustments

made for online learning. The modifications included a goal system for pivotal positions, making student leaders more accountable to each other.

The creation of a centralized document system means that important information is shared instantly, and online Discord groups allow student leaders to communicate and share best practices.

• ACE senior Ziqi (Joey) Zhao created and donated face mask straps employing 3D printers. His updated design includes a gear logo mid strap, tailored specifically for Bosco Tech. He has donated the popular accessory to Tech instructors, teachers at his former elementary school, and to an international flight crew who wear masks for extended periods of time.

• In November, young scholars were inducted into Bosco Tech’s chapters of the National Honor Society (66 new members) and Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (Spanish National Honor Society) (18 new members). The students were invited to join the campus chapters because of demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

• Bosco Tech’s National Honor Society, Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, and Key Club joined forces to help make

Christmas brighter for children all over the world!

Through a massive effort, the clubs’ members set a new school record, filling more than 280 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, a ministry long-supported by students at the Tech.

• In efforts led by ASB and Youth Ministry leaders, members of the Tech community created Christmas cards full of encouraging messages for COVID nurses at Kaiser Downey and Baldwin Park! Mr. Rudy Herrera and Mr. Luis Garza delivered more than 300 cards on Christmas Eve to the hard-working and very appreciative care givers!

• In December, members of the Tech’s Key Club, National Honor Society, and Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica collected and assembled 1,000 HOPE meals to be donated to families in the Montebello Unified School District who are under resourced and/or experiencing homelessness. The intention s for youngsters to have food over holiday breaks when school lunches are no longer available.

• The Tech’s talented students in the Music Program showcased a beautiful night of holiday spirit and cheer by performing an arrangement of assorted holiday favorites during their first-ever Virtual

Winter Concert.

• There were seven Eagle Scouts and one Life Scout among the graduating class of 2021.

• Members of the Tech’s National Honor Society and Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, revitalized Techman Tutoring, a peer assistance program that helps classmates with their studies.

• The National Honor Society collected more than 500 pairs of work gloves, gifts for kids and backpacks for farmworkers and their families located in Central California through San Gabriel Mission’s Campesino Work Glove and Gift Drive.

• Bosco Tech’s American Red Cross Club, cheer program, and National Honor Society joined together to collect hundreds of hygiene items for homeless veterans, through the Red Cross’ International Relief Division.

• Seniors Nathanael DeBerry (ACE ‘21), Giovanni Meyer (MSET ‘21), Keani Moya (IDEA ‘21), Joseph Rivera (IDEA ‘21), Antonio Robles (IDEA ‘21) and Ziqi (Joey) Zhao (ACE ‘21), and their instructors, Brother Tom Mass, SDB, and Mr. Brendan Chua, traveled into the Angeles National Forest last summer to renovate an outdoor competitive arena at the Saint Edward Retreat Center (SERC), formerly Camp Mariastella, in Wrightwood.

The hardworking crew built a 20x20’ Gaga Pit, an octagonal dodgeball-like arena at the 200+-acre campground.

• Youth Ministry Core Team members created regularlyscheduled inspiring Character Assembly virtual programs for the entire student body.

• ACE senior Nathanael DeBerry has signed to play lacrosse at the collegiate level.

This fall, he will play for the Adrian College Bulldogs.

• The Tech's varsity volleyball team earned the league championship title and competed in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.

• In Track & Field, Tech sophomore Christian Perez (ACE '23) was named the Camino Real League Champ in the Boys 800 category.

SCHOOL, TEACHERS, ALUMNI • Diversity Professional, an interactive national publication complemented with strategic offline engagements that focus on business, career and lifestyle, featured Tech students who created more than 1,500 face shields for health care professionals. In a second issue, the publication spotlighted the Tech’s unique college-prep, STEM-based curriculum.

• The Tournament of Roses recognized Mr. Daniel Almanza, director of the Tech's award-winning music program, in their "Honoring Essential Workers – Hero of the Day" program.

• Mr. Claude LeBlanc (MT ‘78), Tech Theology instructor and alumnus, wrote and shared two online faith resources. He offered free of charge "The LeBlanc Psalms," music for all of the responsorial psalms in the three-year Catholic liturgical cycle, and “Journey with Jesus,” a reflection journal for the four gospels.

• This year, Engineers Day went completely virtual, with students hearing from Techmen currently working at IRS Demo, InstillBio, SpaceX, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Universal Studios, and Northrop Grumman.

• Tech alumnus Dr. Peter Velázquez (DE ‘92), Director of Analytical Development at Instil Bio, provided the keynote address to graduates of the class of 2021.

• The Tech’s alumni program launched a new networking platform, BoscoTechAlumni.com, creating a venue for graduates to connect, expand their professional network and give back, acting as mentors to graduating seniors.

• An article on space exploration

by Mrs. Shannon McConnell, Tech trustee and alumnus parent, was featured in “Spacewatch Asia Pacific.” Mrs. McConnell is an Education and Outreach Specialist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

EXTRACURRICULARS • Twelve students completed prestigious summer internships at well-known organizations throughout the L.A. area. The ambitious students—10 rising seniors and two recent graduates— worked under the mentorship of engineers, architects, scientists and entrepreneurs to gain practical experience in professional and STEM fields.

• Three Bosco Tech 2020 graduates, Aaron De Castro, George Flores and Raphael Napinas, were selected to serve as mentors in the Boeing Company’s prestigious Summer High School Internship Program. Having completed Boeing internships in 2019, they guided younger interns, including seven Tech, through the seven-week program.

• Diego Alvarez (MSET '21)

was selected to attend the Leadership in Music program hosted and sponsored by the Pacific Crest Youth Arts Organization, Latino Community Network, and City National Bank.

• Ryan Zettlemoyer (MSET '21) completed his Boeing summer internship on an extra high note! He and his internship cohort won first place for best presentation of a solution to a real-world problem. Their winning project, completed while working virtually, was a system to repair satellites using a soft robotic arm, complete with pneumatic actuators.

• In-person athletics, clubs, and academic support programs resumed in a safe, socially distanced format and a hybrid learning cohort program offered both on-campus, in-person instruction as well as virtual learning for those opting not to be on campus.

• Varsity eSports team member Yiluo Huang (CSEE ’23), ranked #2 in the CA State standings (10.0 Overall KDA, 458.80 Gold Per Minute) for his incredible gaming skills, while Aston Wu ('24) reached #4 in the CA State standings (8.80 Overall KDA, 462.62 Gold Per Minute).

• The Tech’s varsity basketball team earned the top spot as undefeated Camino Real league champions for 2021.

HONOR, HUSTLE, & HUMILITY Honor, hustle, humility--the Tech’s pioneer lacrosse coach, Mr. Kevin Holt, drove home the ‘H3’ tenets as he advised and encouraged the team for six years. Players even wear H3 stickers on the back of their helmets to remind them of what is really important.

Honor: we honor our Creator, our opponents, and ourselves by playing this game; hustle: we always hustle--when we practice, when we play, when we study, when we work, when our parents ask us to do something; humility: we are always humble, when we win, when we lose, with our teammates, our opponents, our parents and, most importantly, our Creator. The team will remember the lesson long after Coach Holt retired this past fall.

“My greatest hope is that I was able to instill a lifelong love of lacrosse and its values,” Coach Holt said. “My dream is to hear that they’re still involved in the sport by coaching, playing, having children that play, or even just remaining fans of the game and helping to ‘grow the game.’”

“Under Coach Holt’s guidance, the program flourished and has always been competitive in the Pacific Lacrosse League,” said Athletic Director Vincent Nolasco.

“As a testament to his program, Coach helped prepare Techmen to compete at the college level. More importantly, he lived out the Salesian charism as he created an oratory for his athletes and treated all with loving kindness.” To date, seven past Tech team members have successfully gone on to play at the college level.

Now living on a farm in Sebastopol with Mandy, his wife of 33 years, Coach Holt reminisced, “There are so many good memories. It has been my honor to coach for six seasons at an institution filled with such amazing young men. We had a challenging season or two, but never once did our athletes give up. They practiced and played with dedication.”

“And the Bosco parents are absolutely the best! They never stopped supporting our team and its goals and I always knew they were there for me. Every year, before our practices began, I held a parent meeting and I guaranteed that even though most of them had never seen (or even heard of) lacrosse, they’d end up loving the game…and I was right!”

Leading the school’s club team since 2015, and with 16 years of coaching history, Coach Holt instilled in the athletes the noble precepts of lacrosse’s Native American originators to honor the Creator who gave the game to us, to honor one’s opponents, and to grow as a person through united goals.

STRATEGIC PLANNING When the first fresh-faced students walked through the school gates on that warm September morning in 1955, a revolutionary vision became a reality. Sixty-six years later, the mission of the Tech continues to be fulfilled. With a tradition rooted in innovation, the school has graduated more than 9,000 young men, each with a unique hands-on STEM education that fully incorporates the highly effective Salesian pedagogy.

“PLANNING IS BRINGING THE FUTURE INTO THE PRESENT SO THAT YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT NOW” — ALAN LAKEIN, AUTHOR

Plans for the Tech’s future are as important today as they were seven decades ago; to ensure continued success and growth, vigilant review and deliberation remain paramount in importance.

In the past year, strategic planning came to the forefront as the Board of Trustees, administrators, parents, and alumni launched an exhaustive review and planning process, focused on the school’s mission and responsiveness to the changes in the environment around us, while enhancing both our effectiveness and efficiency of operation. The year-long process and resulting data, based upon in-depth interviews with multiple stakeholders, will guide sound decision making as Bosco Tech seeks to be recognized as the preeminent Catholic, college-preparatory engineering-science-technology school in the nation.

Beginning last fall, the strategic planning team examined the school’s mission and vision statements to recalibrate and refine them to more effectively reflect today’s Tech and emphasize our future vision. Based upon carefully analyzed results, the foundational goals of a long-range plan were created.

Most specifically, this strategic vision will address four major elements of Bosco Tech’s future: • Academic program—our unchanging mission is ministering to and guiding the young, and we must continue to ensure the relevance, meaningfulness, and realworld skills and experience that have been a cornerstone of academic rigor for nearly 70 years; • Facilities—our environment must be conducive to delivering the best educational product possible which entails improving and renewing the physical plant; • Governance and organizational capacity—we must strengthen the governance and organizational capacity in order to better serve the community and establish Bosco Tech as an educational pillar in the Greater Los Angeles Area; • Financial position—our resources must be wisely invested and reinforced in support of the strategic plan initiatives Dovetailing with strategic planning, a committee dedicated to facilities planning has been established within the school’s Board of Trustees. Their mandate is the careful inventorying and evaluation of the existing physical plant and infrastructure, considered in concert with a blueprint for enhancement, envisioning where the campus can and should be in 10 and 20 years.

The Strategic Planning committee, with approval of the Board of Trustees, adopted new mission and vision statements for Tech.

The Don Bosco Technical Institute is dedicated to creating leaders in engineering, science, and technology by presenting opportunities for real world experience that provide graduates an edge in university studies and career development. Established in 1955, Bosco Tech is a college preparatory Catholic high school guided by the educational philosophy of St. John Bosco and offers challenging academic exploration through project-based learning.

Vision To be recognized as the nation’s premiere Catholic college preparatory high school, fully integrating engineering, science and technology across a curriculum that prepares students for a faith-filled journey of life-long learning, responsible leadership, and distinguished service.
