THE GEAR

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Bosco Tech families-Nearing the end of the first semester is an appropriate milestone to update you on a few things happening on campus:
• Principal Krynen and I recently had the opportunity to meet with each class year to explain the Strength and Spirit campaign and our progress toward the groundbreaking of the new academic building, as well as our anticipated move to a co-ed model. It’s important that our students understand and feel included and heard in these endeavors. They were excited to hear about the planned advancements and had thoughtful questions that we were able to answer.
• The much-anticipated and well-practiced performance in the 2025 Rose Parade is nearly here. The three-school Salesians of Don Bosco Southern California High School Marching Band is ready to go. For more information on tickets or to volunteer as an usher and have a front row seat, contact bandboosters@boscotech.edu.

• The recent Open House drew more than 250 prospective families who toured the labs and met students, teachers, and current parents. I heard extremely positive comments from both interested students and their parents. Thank you for all your help to make the day such an overwhelming success!
• Student-led food, toiletry and toy drives across the campus helped our young men focus on those in need and ways that they could roll up their sleeves and help in tangible ways. The outcome was inspirational!
• We had a full house for the Freshman Mass & Tie Ceremony prior to Open House. This multigenerational tradition is the official welcoming of our newest students into the Tech family and the perfect way to introduce extended family members to our tight-knit community. As we move into the holiday season and the start of the new year, I pray that your family will be richly blessed in the coming months. May your sons do well on their upcoming final exams and may they thrive in their studies and endeavors in 2025. I hope that your family is able to enjoy time together and a few minutes of quiet reflection on all our blessings during the festivities with loved ones.
MerryChristmas
Memo Gutierrez (AU‘83) President

TECH TOPS COLLEGE BOARD HONOR ROLL
NAMED AGAIN ON AP SCHOOL HONOR ROLL
We recently shared that Bosco Tech had earned Gold Level recognition on the 2024 AP School Honor Roll! Criteria focus on three primary areas: College Culture, College Credit, and College Optimization. The Honor Roll also recognizes schools that encourage younger students to undertake AP classes earlier in their educational journeys.
The College Board just shared data that provides more context to this achievement--of all qualifying schools in the U.S. and Canada, only 7% earned Gold!
Go, Bosco Tech!

FIRST SEMESTER FINAL EXAMS
All students will be taking technology and academic final exams Dec. 16-20. This is a chance for students to demonstrate their knowledge of all the content in each of their classes. Final exams are usually cumulative, meaning that these tests will cover material going back to the first day of school. Beginning immediately, students should start preparing for finals by organizing class study materials and understanding their schedule for each of the exam days. If they are in a sport or club, ask about the scheduled practices and meetings during finals and Christmas Break. Also, students should ask their teachers about help sessions, both before and during finals week. Parents can help to motivate and monitor students while they prepare for their exams, and in planning drop offs and pickups for each day of finals.
• Technology Finals (Mon. and Tues., Dec. 16 and 17) Regular daily class schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 3:05 p.m.
• Academic Finals (Wed. through Fri.., Dec. 18-20) Early dismissal schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Please check your email for a more detailed description of the daily shcedules, including which days each subject will hold their final exam.

Appointments start at 8:30 a.m. on that day; families will be sent an appointment time, with details, before that date.
In addition to their technology, the ninth graders will be selecting their sophomore-year World Language and Fine Arts courses. All appointments will take place in the Administration Building and Library. Check your mail for your son’s appointment time and information letter. Questions? Please contact Mr. Eric Tom, Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction, at etom@boscotech.edu.

LEGO COMPETITION DRAWS HUNDREDS
Where champions are made! Bosco Tech hosted its introductory FIRST LEGO Qualifying Tournament in mid-November.
Twenty-seven FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams of 4th through 8th graders participated, with more than 450 people in attendance; 18 of the teams are now moving on to regionals.
Congratulations to all the teams who won awards and those advancing to the next round. A special shout out to team 55956 Octonauts (@falkon.589) for winning the Champion’s Award (first photo).
Themed “Submerged,” the 2024 competition required creative thinking and LEGO® technology to explore the layers of the ocean. Each year, participants dive into exciting topics like recycling, energy, transportation, and urban development, enabling sustainable and indepth STEM education that inspires and supports children and young people for the long term.

“The FIRST LEGO League educational program is an ideal introduction to research, construction, and programming for fourth to eighth-grade students because it sparks early interest in STEM subjects while enhancing their communication skills and teamwork,” said Luis Garza, the Tech’s Assistant Principal of Science & Technology.

REMEMBERING OUR LOVED ONES
DIA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION
By Technology class, students, with help from their talented parents, prepared altars for Dia de los Muertos in early November.
Altars such as these, celebrated in contemporary Mexico and among those of Mexican heritage in the United States and around the world, go back some 3,000 years to the rituals honoring the dead in preColumbian Mesoamerica.
Great job, Techmen! ¡Feliz día de los muertos!

XC LEAGUE CHAMPS GO TO CIF
BY ASSISTANT COACH BRAD STOLZ
The season’s final meets started with the Ayala 3200 M. Challenge on Nov. 2. This was two miles on their newly designed track. We ran it to keep in shape for our all-important League Finals.
The first race was the Frosh-Soph race. Eleven Bosco athletes ran. Sophomore Evan Cipriani won this race of 52 runners with a time of 10:36.58. Freshmen Noah Villanueva and Isaac Macias were our #2 and #3 runners. All eleven runners won medals. We had five runners in the varsity race; our top three finishers were seniors Micah Wong, Jacob Campa, and Joshua Camarillo, all of whom won medals.
Our next meet featured the three-mile races of the Del Rey League Finals on Nov. 6 at Hollydale Park in South Gate. For the JV team, our top three runners were freshmen Esteban Ortega 18:34.21 (who finished fifth overall), Isaac Macias and Luis Rosas. A first-place tie with Salesian was settled by looking at the finishing position of the sixth place runners on each team. Since our placement was better, our JV runners won the race, but finished in second place in the league since they were second in the two previous league races.
A place at the CIF Prelims was at stake in the Finals’ varsity race. Senior Danny Cendejas was our top runner and finished overall fourth with 16:11.10. Sophomore Evan Cipriani was sixth overall, and senior Andrew Rodriguez was ninth. They each received an All League patch for finishing so strong. Our team finished second in the race, but since they had finished first in the two previous league races, Tiger varsity won the league championship and qualified for CIF Prelims.
CIF Southern Section Prelims took place at MT SAC in Walnut on Nov. 16. A traditional part of the course was altered since part of infamous Poop Out Hill collapsed due to erosion. Everyone ran hard and to the best of their ability. Our top five finishers (in order) were seniors Danny Cendejas and Andrew Rodriguez, sophomore Evan Cipriani, and seniors Vincent Hernandez and Micah Wong; freshmen Noah Villanueva and Esteban Ortega were the possible tiebreakers.
Although everyone had worked hard all season long, we missed qualification for CIF Finals by finishing immediately after the last qualifying team. We did have the satisfaction of having tried our best, and having made some possibly life-long friendships.
We look forward now to Track and Field season and having most of these athletes, as well as others, join us in the many events of running, jumping, and throwing that this sport offers. Conditioning and practice start soon. Watch for announcements if you wish to become part of a winning tradition.

ESPORTS MAKES NATIONAL RANKINGS
Two of Bosco Tech’s talented esports teams, the Counter-Strike 2 and Halo teams, have both reached the quarterfinals of the national championships this fall. They will battle it out with the the top U.S. contenders when school returns after Thanksgiving break. Go, Tigers! Stay tuned!
