FALL OPEN HOUSE & TIE CEREMONY--
ISSUE 135 DECEMBER 2023
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Season’s Greetings, Tech family-Coming on the heels of an incredibly busy couple of months, I appreciated the opportunity to slow down, take stock and be thankful over the Thanksgiving break. I know that I, for one, am incredibly grateful for the Tech and its pervasive sense of community. Fellow alumni, faculty and staff, and parents repeatedly remark to me about the tangible sense of support evident on campus. And for that I am truly thankful! As we move into December, although the days remain busy, there is an upcoming point of completion in view--our students are nearing the end of the first semester. Please join me in applauding them as they finish strong! At this point, our seniors have submitted most of their college applications, 36 candidates, 6 leaders and their teacher chaperones are currently on the KAIROS retreat, our band is revving up for their wonderful Winter Concert, everyone is prepping (or should be prepping) for semester final exams, and as fall sports wrap up and celebrate the end of their competitive seasons, our spring teams and extracurriculars gearing up for action. Please join our faculty in supporting your sons as they move into the final exam period. Encourage them to eat a balanced diet (not always an easy task), get plenty of sleep (again, not always easy), stay hydrated, review and rewrite notes, and discuss with their teachers any areas of study they have questions about. Your sons’ instructors stand ready to help, guide, and provide extra tutoring in order to help your student do his very best. I pray that as the semester draws to an end, and after students have their exams, that you and your loved ones will have a joyous holiday! Christmas is the perfect time to reflect on the greatest gift we’ve been given--the fulfillment of the eternal promise of Emmanuel (God with us)! As we exchange gifts with family and friends, may your holiday season be full of the true spirit of love and togetherness. And may 2024 be a blessed year for you and your family.
Merry Christmas and Happy 2024,
Jeff Krynen (BT ‘81) Principal

SPACE SHUTTLE COLLABORATION BOSCO TECH IS ONLY HIGH SCHOOL ASKED TO PARTCIIPATE Bosco Tech students have been invited to participate in the Space Shuttle Inspiration Pathfinder Project, where the goal is the restoration of the original full-scale mockup of the space shuttle. Named “Inspiration,” the mockup originally was used to earn approval of the space shuttle program and assist in the final design. Utilized for hardware and software development in later years, it is now part of the City of Downey’s Columbia Memorial Space Science Learning Center, located near the former 1970s space shuttle developer Rockwell International. While several university teams are working to restore various parts of the mockup, Bosco Tech is the only high school asked to participate in this exciting venture. Tech students, under the guidance of their instructors and Tech alumni who were instrumental in the space program, will disassemble, document, refurbish and restore the Inspiration’s nose landing gear. The Tech was included thanks to retired aerospace engineer and alumnus Gerald Blackburn (MT ‘62); Mr. Blackburn has also served as president of the Aerospace Legacy Foundation. “Our students are thrilled to work on the exciting restoration,” said Luis Garza, Assistant Principal of Technology. “Not only will they utilize the resources of our expansive technology labs in their work, but the fact that they’ll be mentored by actual space program engineers is a priceless opportunity. Tech alumni are part of space exploration history!”

THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM FOR CAR CLUB BY RICARDO MIRELES (EL ‘83), CAR CLUB ADVISOR For the Tech’s Car Club, the third time was the charm! Sort of. The Team LiMoNada #64 Mustang raced to the checkered flag on both Saturday and Sunday at the 24 Hours of LeMons race at Buttonwillow Raceway Park near Bakersfield this past Sep. 30-Oct. 1. Wow, was the handling of the car majorly improved! The suspension updates completed over the summer had a huge impact on speed through the turns. The suspension tuning that the Tech and Academia Avance students helped with made a big difference. Review of race video that #27 “Team Car Wars” posted to YouTube shows the Team LiMoNada Mustang passing and staying ahead. To note: the #27 Miata finished in 10th Place Overall out of 83 entries, ie. a very competitive team - AND Team LiMoNada Mustang was matching the #27 pace! But, alas, speed is not everything in endurance racing. The team with the most laps over the two days is the team that wins, ie. Mr. Tortoise beats the Hare. Team LiMoNada did complete 177 laps on the threemile track, to finish in 54th Place. This is a huge improvement over our first two races where we DNFed (Did Not Finish). But there is still much to learn and improve for our next race. This time out, brake pad and rotor management - or lack thereof - cost us more than three hours in forced repairs on Sunday morning. We estimate we could have turned another 80+ laps in this lost time, which would have moved us into the top half of teams. To be competitive in LeMons, the team must have A) a car that lasts; B) a car that is fast; and just like in the movie “Cars”, a pit crew like Lightning McQueen’s. But look closer at the race results. The winning car completed 339 laps. The very polished Team #181 “Perplex US Racing” in their super racey 2001 Lexus IS 300 had a fastest lap of 2:15.655. In comparison, the fastest lap for Team LiMoNada was a 2:28.347 - about 10% (13 seconds) slower. That time really adds up over 300+ laps. Our goal for the next race is to not have downtime due to repairs, and to speed up pit stops. We could be in the Top Quarter overall. Surely within Top 10 for our Class B entry. The race schedule for the 2024 LeMons season was just released in October. There are three races planned in California of which Team LiMoNada could possibly enter two (whilst not disrupting the academic calendar...too much): Feb. 24-25 at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows near Sacramento; Sep. 28-29 again at Buttonwillow. Stay tuned for More Speed Racer! - Oops. Wrong show. ... for more Tech Car Club racing. And come on out to the next race!

TECH SELECTION DAY IS DEC. 9 During the fall semester, all freshmen rotate through three technologies. On Saturday, December 9, during the Technology Selection Day event, they will pick one technology as their major for the remainder of their time here at Bosco Tech. PASSING THE MANTLE-SUSTAINING THE LEGACY As the number of the Tech’s founding fathers--the Salesians--has lessened in recent years, Techmen have increasingly become its stewards. We’re grateful for what was instilled in us during our formative years and now, more than ever, it’s up to us, together. Today, you’ll find Techmen everywhere on campus—alums working to make the school even better for today’s students. Each of us has greatly benefitted from our Salesian education; we’re asking you to partner with so many dedicated alumni in sustaining the legacy. Will you consider making a financial contribution today at boscotech.edu/giving?
Among alumni on campus today are (l to r): Ed Sepulveda (EL ‘96), Alejandro Martinez (ME ’85), Grayson Wade (ACE ‘18), Angel Garcia (GC ‘92), Jeff Krynen (BT ’81), Anthony Campa (MS ‘06), Luis Garza (DE ‘94), Memo Gutierrez (AU ‘83), Rudy Herrera (AU ‘80), Daniel Quintana (GC ‘85), Daniel Uballez (MAT ‘17), Michael Romo (PT ‘10), Adam Uballez (MS ‘12), Arturo Romero (MN ‘06), Fred Padilla (ME ‘62), Brendan Chua (DE ‘00), Vincent Nolasco (CT ’09).

COACH QUINTANA RETURNS ALUMNUS & PAST INSTRUCTOR AND COACH TO HEAD BASEBALL PROGRAM Welcome back to Mr. Daniel “Coach Q” Quintana (GC ’85), Tech alumnus, instructor and coach, who is heading up the Tiger Baseball program. He has 18 years of experience coaching and more than 20 years’ teaching experience, including several years at the Tech. “It has always been my belief that a HS baseball program should be a place that represents the expectations that are found at the next level, whether that be in baseball or life,” Coach Q explained of his coaching style. “It’s a place where getting players ready for the next level means exactly that, where player development leads to bigger and better results. Where a team comes together as a family and sets out toward a common goal—to be the best they can be, both on and off the field.” “I have never forgotten the lessons and memories Bosco Tech provided me. The Tech truly shaped me into the person I am today…the opportunity to come full circle is surreal. Add to that being entrusted with coaching my alma mater’s baseball program and the opportunity to lead the Tigers to new possibilities, well, to put it simply, I am pumped to be here!” We caught up with Coach Q to ask him a few questions: Tell us a little about your history at the Tech as both a student and an instructor coach: Student—two-year varsity baseball player, member of the Lettermen Society, ASB Ambassador of Activities. Instructor/Coach—taught Design, received Dominic Savio Award for Excellence in Teaching, baseball team won JV League title
What’s something about the school that never changes? The “mall,” the sense of home, the energy that is always there. What’s something you want to instill in your team, individually or as a group? We, the baseball program, are a Family! The importance of school, now and college. There are no shortcuts in life; hard work and commitment. Honor and your word are two things that can never be taken from you. What’s your baseball philosophy? Do your part for the team always! Bring effort to every practice and game. My philosophy starts with one principle and three priorities: always give the effort that motivates you to be your best each and every day. Education, baseball, family—when it comes to everything else in life, it is about finding a symbiotic balance with those aspects and you.

FIRST SEMESTER FINAL EXAM UPDATE All students will be taking technology and academic final exams Dec. 14-20. This is a chance for students to demonstrate their knowledge of all the content in each of their classes. Final exams are usually cumulative, meaning that these tests will cover material going back to the first day of school. Beginning immediately, students should start preparing for finals by organizing class study materials and understanding their schedule for each of the exam days. If they are in a sport or club, ask about the scheduled practices and meetings during finals and Christmas Break. Also, students should ask their teachers about help sessions, both before and during finals week. Parents can help to motivate and monitor students while they prepare for their exams, and in planning drop offs and pickups for each day of finals. Technology Finals (Thur., Dec. 14 and Fri., Dec. 15) Regular daily class schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 3:05 p.m. Academic Finals (Mon., Dec. 18 - Wed., Dec. 20) Early dismissal schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Please check your email for a more detailed description of the daily shcedules, including which days each subject will hold their final exam.

WORKING FOR ALL STUDENTS SPOTLIGHT ON ASB EXECUTIVE OFFICERS We caught up with the Tech’s ASB Executive Officers, seniors who are working alongside class officers and all elected ASB members on behalf of the entire student body, to ask them about their goals for the year. Saif Halari 220073 (MAT ’24)--ASB Executive Treasurer What do you hope to accomplish for the student body this school year? I hope to provide fair prices in the Snack Shaq and reorient its operations so that it can be for our people. I also hope to increase our teamwork so that we can, as a whole, better set up our events.
Nicholas Garcia 220015 (MAT ’24)--ASB Executive Chaplain What do you hope to accomplish for the student body this school year? I want to help leave a strong impact on this school, to leave it better than I did when I was a freshman. I have had an amazing journey in my faith over the past two years and I have learned a lot about myself and my relationship with the Lord. I want to continue to push that and spread my experience and the word of God through campus ministry. We want to continue to produce very personal events so we can touch every single Bosco Tech student’s heart, help each other grow in faith, and continue to pursue a relationship with God.
Peter Cervantes 220079 (MAT ’24)--ASB Executive Vice President What do you hope to accomplish for the student body this school year? I hope to continue to give the students the best year possible while bringing them closer to their faith and goals.
Caleb Glassow 220062 (IDEA ’24)--ASB Executive President What do you hope to accomplish for the student body this school year? I hope to improve the quality of our dances and create better relationships with other schools in our area not only to attract more people to these dance but also to increase the impact our school has on our community, hopefully by setting up events that are run by multiple school ASBs. Also, I would like to develop more methods for students to promote their own ideas and have more spaces on campus dedicated to the students, possibly a room that allows students a quiet space on campus.

X COUNTRY FINISHES SEASON AT CIF BY ASSISTANT COACH BRAD STOLZ On Oct. 28, cross country alumni returned to Bosco for their annual competition against our current JV and Varsity teams. As customary, the two-mile run starts off at the flag pole in front of school and continues on San Gabriel Blvd, going around our block one and a half times, ending at the flag. The weather was sunny and cool -- great for a race! The alumni who returned were from the class of 2023 (Jose Alvarez, Jad Arribi, & Christian Perez) back to 1988 (Omar Valdemar) -- a 35-year age span. Some were in shape, others had not run in a while, some were former record holders, and all came because they wanted to run and relive their younger days with their fellow alumni as well as inspire our current team. After a spirited start, it was very obvious who the winner would be when the runners came past the flag pole for their final 1/3 of the race. The top two repeated last year with alumnus Christian Perez (ACE ‘23) 10:39 taking the #1 spot over current junior Daniel Cendejas (ACE ‘25) 11:13. Senior Khiru Khan (ACE ‘24)11:15 went from eighth last year to third this year, two seconds behind Danny -- a 2:10 improvement for him in a year! In fact, there only 9 seconds separated the second from sixth spot. The next alumni after Christian’s win came in 18th and later. They will remain anonymous! This race was about a minute faster than last year. Five of the first seven finishers came from ACE. This event was an enjoyable occasion for all. We thank Coach Michele Casanova and the Tiger cheer team who brightened the day for the runners, and we especially appreciate the booster parents for all their hard work and support in setting up the race and furnishing the delicious breakfast afterwards. On Halloween, Cross Country had its league finals at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale in hot and dusty conditions. JV continued its winning streak at all league meets by again coming in first. Four Bosco runners finished in the top 10 in the league: freshman Evan Cipriani had a great race and finished second, and earned a spot on the Varsity team, as did junior Vince Hernandez who came in fourth; sophomores Nick Renteria and Noel Aguilar finished sixth and seventh in the league. Our JV team’s final race capped an outstanding job all season.

X COUNTRY FINISHES SEASON AT CIF CONTINUED Our varsity team finished once again in the number two spot in the league. Two of our runners earned All League honors and patches: junior Danny Cendejas who finished sixth and senior Khiru Khan with an eighth-place finish. As a result, our varsity team advanced to the CIF Prelims. The CIF Prelims took place on Veterans Day at what is considered by many as the most difficult cross country course in the U.S.: Mt SAC in Walnut. In our heat of 16 schools, our varsity team ran against many tough teams, including four of the top-ranked schools in Southern California. Although we failed to make the cut to go to CIF Finals, we are very proud of our athletes who ran in the prelims race: seniors Khiru Khan and J P Rodriguez; juniors Danny Cendejas, Andrew Rodriguez, Micah Wong, Vince Hernandez, and freshman Evan Cipriani. All the hard work that our teams put in pre season and during the season led to very successful and praiseworthy results. We look forward to seeing these athletes and others as we now start practice for what we expect to be an outstanding track and field season.
