Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Sൺඅൾඌංൺඇ Dංඋൾർඍඈඋ Hello, Bosco Tech Family!

Because of the recent write up in The Gear, I have received a big expression of ‘welcome home.’ Thank you for making me feel a part of the family after four years away from this faith community while I was assigned at St. Dominic Savio Church in Bellflower.

I am making my way back to the Tech slowly but surely, as I continue to refill my spiritual tank to share and receive what God has prepared for me in the here and now. I couldn’t ask for a better opportunity than to do so with a Mass for All Saints’ Day a few weeks back on Nov. 1. To be able to see the entire school all dressed up for the occasion was priceless.

It was a day when we were able to ask so many of our intercessors to pray for us—our Mother, Mary Help of Christians, who guided St. John Bosco (affectionately known as Don Bosco) all the way to the end, as related in his sentiment: “Our Lady has done all these things!” I am glad to continue the Salesian Legacy: to produce Good Christians and Honest Citizens—Salesian Holiness (as seen in the photo).

Who am I and what is my role here at the Tech?

The quick answer would be something like this: “Fr. Chinh is a spiritual guide as a Director. I am a spiritual father for the Tech to bring us closer to God.” Without the gift of fatherhood, we drift like a log down the gushing river, aimlessly. True? I hope to be an impacting presence at the Tech: contributing, caring and loving, at the least.

In closing, I would like to offer a quotation from one of the greatest saints in our Catholic Church, especially his initiative to serve and care for the poor, forgotten and abandoned of the society after the French Revolution. Here is an insight from St. Vincent de Paul for your reflection, “Our Lord has bound us together with a new bond of His love and unites us very perfectly. Thus, we cherish, visit, and console one another in our trials and illnesses.”

Please know I am here to assist you to live through those kinds of tension life brings to us day by day.

Many of the stories in “Gratitude is the Memory of the Heart” are directly related to the people and experiences at Bosco Tech. Because publishing costs were covered by a generous donation, Mr. Stroup is able to offer the book free of charge to whomever is interested, but copies are limited. Aඌඌංඌඍൺඇඍ Pඋංඇർංඉൺඅ Hඈඇඈඋൾൽ ൿඈඋ Aඐൺඋൽ-Wංඇඇංඇ඀ STEM Cඎඋඋංർඎඅඎආ Kudos to Bosco Tech Assistant Principal Eric Tom who just returned from the National Science Teaching Association Conference on Science Education in Salt Lake City. While at the conference, Mr. Tom received the Vernier Software & Technology's 2019 Engineering Technology Award he was awarded this past Spring for his integration of the company's advanced equipment in the Tech's Green and Sustainable Technology curriculum. The award is given annually for creative use of technology in STEM and engineering teaching. Conference attendance was part of the generous award.

And congratulations to Mr. Tom and Ms. Darlene Nichols who were married on Oct. 19 and honeymooned while at the Utah conference! Congratulations on both counts and best wishes for many happy years ahead!

Tൾർඁ Aඅඎආඇඎඌ Sඎඉඉඈඋඍංඇ඀ Uඇංඍൾൽ Nൺඍංඈඇඌ ංඇ Lංൻඒൺ Between October 2018 and November 2019, two graduates from schools associated with the Salesians of Don Bosco, one from the UK and the other from the USA, found themselves deployed to North Africa with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

Colonel Raymond Hughes, British Army, is the Senior British Military Advisor and graduated from Salesian College in Liverpool, England. Captain Albert Angel (EL ‘90), US Navy, is the Senior American Military Advisor and graduated from Bosco Tech.

During their recent operational tour, Ray and Albert worked hand-in-hand to support the UN Special Representative to the Secretary General to fulfill the tenets of the UN mandate to build and unify Libyan security institutions and forces; operating under civilian democratic control of legitimate state institutions; with security actors who are professional and responsive to civilian security needs in accordance with international human rights standards.

Both men agreed that the Salesian education they received academically stood them in good stead for their career in the Armed Services and was instrumental in completing the rigorous requirements at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, respectively. The skills that facilitate leadership and effective collaboration, including: integrity, self-discipline, work ethic, planning, time management, delegation, and conflict resolution are all integral student outcomes at Salesian institutions and highly valued in the military. Understanding the global nature of many social problems from a Salesian perspective has further helped both men apply their skills to finding a resolution to the crisis in Libya.

Sඍඎൽൾඇඍඌ Tඈඎඋ Aඋංඓඈඇൺ Cඈඅඅൾ඀ൾඌ Bosco Tech students and academic counselor chaperones enjoyed visiting four universities during the Tech’s recent Arizona College Tour. In a few busy days, the group visited Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Grand Canyon University, Arizona State University and the University of Arizona.

At the schools, students were able to visit a crash site ‘study’ (Embry-Riddle) and engineering labs (GCU).

Additionally, college counselors at Chandler, Arizona’s Seton Catholic Preparatory High School provided our students with an overview of other AZ colleges, and the group attended Mass in Mesa’s beautiful St. Timothy Catholic Church.

Gංඏංඇ඀ Bൺർ඄ As we enter the season of gratitude and giving, Bosco Tech students are giving back, contributing to both our local and the broader community.

In November, first- and second-year ASB students successfully hosted a food drive for those in need in the San Gabriel Valley area, and Youth Ministry Core Team’s supported Don Bosco Sobre Ruedas (Don Bosco on Wheels) purchase of wheelchairs and training for young people who have lost the ability to walk.

As we near Christmas, the Tech’s Letterman Society is hosting a toy drive for the Salesian Boys and Girls Club. The drive runs Dec. 2-18.

Nൾඐ Eඇඋඈඅඅආൾඇඍ Rൾ඀ංඌඍඋൺඍංඈඇ Pඋඈർൾඌඌ— February 27, 2020, 1–8 p.m. (ONE DAY ONLY) For incoming freshmen and re-enrolling 10th, 11th and 12th grade students, the Tech is implementing a new online enrollment process. An email with a link to the packet will be sent to your primary email using Google Docs. Please be sure to review the list of required documents and read all terms and agreements to process your son’s enrollment packet for the 2020-2021 school year.

For parents who would like to complete the process at Bosco Tech, we will be holding Enrollment Registration Day on Thursday, Feb. 27, in the library from 1 to 8 p.m. Staff will be available to assist you in the online process.

2020-2021 Tඎංඍංඈඇ Aඌඌංඌඍൺඇർൾ Iඇൿඈඋආൺඍංඈඇ The Tuition Assistance application for the school year 2020-2021 is now available.

Applications for Tuition Assistance must be filed annually as assistance awards are valid for the year of application only. Assurance of an award cannot be guaranteed on an annual basis, and depends on many factors including available funding, timing of the application and need. We encourage families who are in need of Tuition Assistance to apply as early as possible.

The online application process is now available. The deadline to submit the Tuition Assistance application is February 14, 2020.

In order to apply for Tuition Assistance, you need to be registered with FACTS. Please follow the steps below: 1. Please click on the following link to start the Tuition Assistance application: https://online.factsmgt.com/signin/48613 2. If you are a new FACTS user, please select “Create a username & password” to begin. If you are an existing FACTS user, just enter your username and password.

3. Click on Start Tuition Assistance Application.

4. Select the appropriate school year.

5. Complete the steps as prompted.

Applicants will not be reviewed until all documentation is received. Please note that if your account is past due, your Tuition Assistance Application may be denied.

The Tuition Assistance Program is designed to provide funds to eligible students from institutional and private funding sources. In order to be eligible, applicants are required to submit a confidential application through FACTS and meet the following criteria:  Be a full-time student in good academic standing  Maintain, at every semester period, a minimum GPA of 2.500 and receive no D's and/or F's  Maintain good conduct  Demonstrate financial need  Satisfy any and all of the financial assistance requirements set forth by DBTI and/or our donors.

Sඈඉඁඈආඈඋൾ Rൾඍඋൾൺඍ —Bਙ Cਁ਒਌ਏਓ Cਁ਍ਐਁ (CSEE ‘22)

On November 12, Bosco Tech’s sophomore class participated in their own retreat held at St. Joseph's, the Salesian Youth Retreat Center adjacent to the school. The theme of the retreat was relationships with friends, family, and God and how to strengthen those bonds. Students were divided up into random groups to be taken to stations that present these topics. Each talk began with an icebreaker to create a comfortable atmosphere so individuals felt free to voice their opinions.

Mr. Jeffrey Krynen, Bosco’s principal, explained the importance of family, family appreciation and affection, and family growth and development. Since he comes from a big household, his family is a core value in his life and he wanted to share that with the class. The next station was with the Athletic Director Michael Khoshkbariie. He spoke about the benefits of having friends, and how the relationships you make with others heavily influence your character and integrity. It really made me think about the significance of making good friendships at the high school level to set ourselves up for college and our future careers. The groups then made their way into St. Joseph’s Chapel with the school’s new Salesian Director, Fr. Chinh Nguyen, to talk about creating or reinforcing your relationship with God and our daily mission to search for Christ. Confessions were available at the time. I enjoyed that it assisted us to start a new, pure life as we altered our approach towards God and towards caring for our neighbors.

The final station was a town hall meeting with Mr. Rodolfo Herrera, the Youth Ministry Coordinator. This was the opportunity for kids to speak their minds about the school, whether it be what we love about it or what we can improve on. These comments are now being discussed with the administration so that as a community, we can continue to make Bosco Tech a better place. The final component of the retreat was Mass.

After receiving advice and information about the kinds of relationships we form with others, the Mass was an excellent time to reflect on those presentations and understand how we can use them to improve and renew our personality and beliefs.

The sophomore retreat was not necessarily a time for play. Its purpose was to cogitate on our lives, understand how we affect other lives, develop new friendships, and realize what steps we need to take in order for our brotherhood to unite in God's Kingdom. A special thanks to the retreat leaders, Alexis Mendoza and Nathanael DeBerry, and other Youth Ministry members Ethan Stevenson, Jericoh Santiago, Mario Chavez, Anthony Smith, and Angel Almaraz-Meza, for keeping the event organized and upholding its sacredness and significance. I believe this event left sophomores with a closer connection with each other and God.

Nൾඐඌ Fඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Cඈඎඇඌൾඅංඇ඀ Cൾඇඍൾඋ SENIORS (Class of 2020) Early decision and early action application notices will be announced in December. Students should closely monitor their incoming emails and standard postage mail for correspondence from colleges and universities. If additional information is requested by a college, please contact Mr. Chavez in the Counseling Center immediately so that a response can be completed as quickly as possible.

SENIOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS: Several universities and colleges will continue to be open for accepting applications for Fall 2020 admissions after the UC and Cal State University deadline of November 30. Please access the Common Application at www.commonapp.org, or stop by the Counseling Center to obtain more information regarding these colleges from Mr. Chavez.

COLLEGE WEEK: This year, Bosco Tech will have its “College Week” from February 10–14. Guest speakers from various colleges will present students with insight to college readiness, college choices, and submitting a well prepared college application. Please listen to the daily bulletin for details of the College Week’s events.

Mൺඍඁ Cඈආඉൾඍංඍංඈඇ— Tൾඅඅ ൺ Fඋංൾඇൽ Bosco Tech will host its mathematics competition for fifth through eighth grade students on Saturday, Feb. 1. The 48th annual event, the longest running in Southern California, will offer awards to the highest scoring individuals and teams.

To register, review rules, and see sample test questions, visit www.boscotech.edu. Event pre-registration is required and ends January 24; the cost to participate is $15 per student. Event check in is 8-8:45 a.m.; the competition begins promptly at 9 a.m. and concludes at approximately 10 a.m. Results will be announced at a ceremony shortly after.

Food and refreshments will be available for sale through the morning.

Iඍ’ඌ Oൿൿංർංൺඅ—Fඋൾඌඁආൺඇ Tංൾ Cൾඋൾආඈඇඒ Fඈඋආൺඅඅඒ Wൾඅർඈආൾඌ Cඅൺඌඌ ඈൿ 2023 Congratulations to the Class of 2023, who were officially welcomed into the Tech family at the Freshman Mass and Tie Ceremony on Nov. 17, prior to Open House. Special thanks to our alumni who were on hand to present the students their class ties. We’re so proud of these young men and pray for their continued success over their remaining years at Bosco Tech!

Rൾൽ Cඋඈඌඌ Cඁൺඉඍൾඋ Hඈඌඍඌ Lൾൺൽൾඋඌඁංඉ Tඋൺංඇංඇ඀ Rൾඍඋൾൺඍ On Saturday, Nov. 9, Bosco Tech hosted the American Red Cross Arcadia and Pasadena Youth Corps Officer Retreat where over 65 club officers from 13 local high schools were represented. Proud to share and show off their "home," several Bosco Tech's Red Cross Club officers participated in the annual leadership training forum with their Red Cross club peers from the local area.

The young leaders participated in ice breakers, team-building exercises, and exchanged creative ideas for Red Cross Club fundraisers and club activities for this school year. High school Red Cross clubs are called upon to support the core areas of the American Red Cross including disaster preparedness and education, support for the armed forces, blood drives and international relief efforts. The American Red Cross offers high school youth extensive opportunities and experience in leadership, community engagement, public speaking, CPR training, fundraising, networking and summer internships.

"I just want to thank Bosco Tech Principal Jeff Krynen, and President Memo Gutierrez for allowing us to utilize your library Saturday for the Arcadia and Pasadena Youth Corps Officer Retreat,” said Anna Giang, Red Cross L.A. Region Senior Specialist for Community & Volunteer Engagement. “We would not have been able to empower as many youth leaders as we did without your generosity and support."

Bosco Tech ended the 2019 Cross Country season with successes in its final two meets. The team’s next-tolast meet was the Arcadia Invitational on Nov. 1, at Whittier Narrows Park. This course was flat on grass, dirt and sidewalks. It was familiar terrain, as the course is only a couple of miles from the Bosco campus.

Of the sixteen athletes who ran, exactly half established a new personal record (PR). The PRs of sophomores Nathan Nieblas, Luis Carbajal, Mateo Nakano, and senior Timothy Galvan were in the 29-40s second range, while freshmen Anthony Battaglia and Issac Prado had PRs of just under a minute.

This was a very good effort on their part.

Our team’s final meet of the season was the Del Rey League Finals on Nov. 6 at La Mirada Park. It is a hilly course on grass, dirt, and sidewalks. We were familiar with the course, having had our first league race there, although it has changed a bit since then. Our seven-man varsity team came within only seven points of advancing to the CIF Prelims. On our JV team of 16, four had PRs: freshmen Nicholas Quesada and Christian Perez, and sophomores Luis Carbajal and Hector Gardia (by 49 seconds). Senior Oscar Cendejas finished ninth in the league and received a medal. Our JV team did quite well and finished second in the league!

Congratulations to all our athletes—all of whom put in much time and work, and all of whom throughout the season advanced themselves and their skills much both mentally and physically. We hope to see many of them continue to improve their running skills in Track & Field next semester!

BAND PERFORMANCES The DBTI Royal Techmen Marching Band finished their season with Senior Night and Game on November 1 at the DBTI vs Pius Mathias Game at Cantwell High School. On November 3, the Band took part of the procession for the Feast of San Trifone at St. Peters Italian Church in Los Angeles. The Band also held their end of the season Band Banquet on November 8. It was a great time for the band to spotlight all their members and specially written Haikus for our senior members.

Next, the music program will start preparing for the annual Winter Concert “A Night on the Polar Express” as the DBTI Concert Band and the Music Appreciation Class begin rehearsing this month.

The DBTI Concert Band is planning to compete at the Annual Heritage Festival in Boston Massachusetts in the Spring. We welcome and appreciate your continued support as the band aims to bring home another award.
