Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋൾඌංൽൾඇඍ Dear Bosco Tech Family— Welcome back! And a very special welcome to our freshmen—we’re glad you and your family are now part of our Tech community, Class of 2026!

This is an extra exciting time on campus. As you may already have seen, the Tech’s Administration Building is undergoing extensive renovations. Project details are on page 3 of this issue of The Gear.

Essentially, the finished product will provide an accurate first impression of the vitality of today’s Tech and a look at where we are headed in the near future. Part of the recently developed master facilities plan for the entire campus, the lobby renovation is the first step to renew, modernize, and update facilities used by our faculty, staff and student body. As the improvements are unveiled, I invite you to check out the finished lobby and see it for yourself.

As I look toward the new school year with anticipation; it is my prayer that we will continue to grow together, and that each of our students will thrive and make wise decisions regarding their future, knowing that they are cared for by many who have their best interests.

Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Sൺඅൾඌංൺඇ Dංඋൾർඍඈඋ Hello Tígers— Happy new school year! In this month of August, we will celebrate two most important feast days. Monday, Aug. 15, our first day of school, we celebrate the solemnity of the Assumption of our Blessed Mother, and Tuesday, Aug. 16, we celebrate the birthday of Don Bosco, who is the father, teacher and friend of youth. If Don Bosco was still alive today, we would be celebrating his 207th birthday.

We are starting our new school year with the blessing of our Blessed Mother, and will strive to be like her in leading people to God; and as our beloved Don Bosco who focused on his mission on the believe that true education is a matter of the heart.

Students, enjoy your last few days of summer vacation. Parents, celebrate the most wonderful time of the year, when your students return back to school! Teachers, enjoy making educational plans that you will share with your students. Tech alumni, thank you for your ongoing support.

We are grateful to God for this past academic year and pray for His blessing on all of you in the year ahead. Be assured that you are always remembered in our Salesian community’s daily Mass and prayers.

May I offer you a prayer as we start our new school year together: Good and Gracious God, who causes the minds of the faithful to unite in a single purpose, grant your people to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, amid the uncertainties of this world, our hearts may be fixed on that place where true gladness is found. BMET Sൾඇංඈඋ Cඈආඉඅൾඍൾඌ Nൺඍංඈඇൺඅ Lൾൺൽൾඋඌඁංඉ Fඈඋඎආ What an amazing opportunity for senior Dominic Almonte (BMET ’23) who just completed the nineday National Youth Leadership Forum: Medicine, held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dominic, who was nominated to participate in the hands-on experience by Mr. Orlando Magana, his academic advisor, plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Part of the class of 2023, Dominic will be in the first graduating class of the Tech’s newest applied science major--Biological, Medical, and Environmental Technology (BMET).

Nංർඁඈඅൺඌ Gൺඋർංൺ Aඉඉඈංඇඍൾൽ ඍඈ Nൺඍංඈඇൺඅ Yඈඎඍඁ Cඈඎඇർංඅ Representing California, Nevada and Hawaii, Tech junior Nicholas Garcia (MAT) has been appointed to the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry’s (NFCYM) National Youth Advisory Council.

Nominated for the twelve-student committee by his youth minister at Brea’s Saint Angela Merici parish, Nick was selected after submitting a video and successfully passing a panel interview. The council is dedicated to empowering youth to activate their voices and gifts as members of the Church.

Nick is a member of Bosco Tech’s Youth Ministry Core Team, and served as one of four student leaders at last month’s freshman “Salesian Experience“ retreat to welcome the Class of ’26 to the Tech family. The honor student also served as a vacation bible school leader this summer at Saint Angela’s and soon will begin training to become a Eucharistic Minister. We’re incredibly proud of Nick and will be cheering him on throughout his multi-year term on the advisory council!

Tech Support works throughout the semester, and can be arranged to begin at the start of the school year.

What Tech Support does:  Provides counseling and guidance for academic improvement  Monitors grades and individual student progress  Meets with parents, students, and teachers to strategize and effectively create an academic improvement plan.  Monitors plans and communicates with parents on an on-going basis.  Schedules weekly meetings with students who have a plan in place.  Works closely with academic counseling to keep students on track for success.  Provides a positive outlook and motivation for improvement.

Hello Bosco Tech School Community, Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! I want to thank all the student-athletes, parents, coaches, faculty, staff, administration and supporters who have supported athletics in the past school year. It was greatly appreciated by our teams and coaches. Each student-athlete continued growing and deepening their determination and pride in representing our school community while navigating through the difficulties of COVID. I am so proud how our student-athletes and coaching staff worked together despite pandemic challenges.

We will start our athletic calendar with the Fall sports seasons; competing teams are: Football, Cross Country and ESports. All three programs return a lot of starters and key returns for their respective programs.

Our football program is now in the seven-school (including the Tech) Camino Real league. The other schools are: Bishop Montgomery, Cantwell, Mary Star, St. Monica, Salesian, and Verbum Dei. Four teams will advance to playoffs. Our Tigers are looking to make it a back-to-back year in playoffs. Our Tigers return a lot of key starters who were All League (Santa Fe) last season, including league MVP and quarterback Noah Escalera and Defensive League MVP and All CIF Lineback Andrew Shahin. The first game of the season will be week zero at Riverside Prep and our homecoming game (week four) will be on Saturday, September 17, at 10am.

Cross Country is in the very challenging Del Rey League, but Coach Fimbres is excited for all the returns this season. Last year, we finished third in Del Rey and qualified in the CIF Southern Section Prelims. Senior Christian Perez will set the tone and pace for the new season. We are looking toward another strong finish in league and hope to again qualify for prelims.

Our Esports program will be competing in their fourth semester of competition. We look forward to another season of success, growth and various post-season births.

CIF State announced in late June that they will be partnering with the North America Scholastic Esports Federation, and we will continue to compete in the PlayVS and the United Federation of Esports Athletes. Our Esports program is lead by senior Brandon Bocanegra who is hoping for another State Championship in Madden during this fall semester!

Please stay up to date with all athletic department information via the school website and follow the athletic department Instagram page on social media. I look forward to seeing all of you supporting and cheering for our student-athletes and our athletic department during the fall sports season.

Iඍ’ඌ Bൺർ඄—Tඁൾ Fඋൾඌඁආൺඇ Sൺඅൾඌංൺඇ Eඑඉൾඋංൾඇർൾ!

After a three-year COVID hiatus, the Freshman Retreat is back and better than ever! On Friday morning, July 8, those freshmen attending summer school were seen bringing to school an unusual assortment of items: pillows, sleeping bags, towels & boogie boards. That’s because their overnight experience was to begin that afternoon when classes ended.

In the afternoon, after being tested for COVID, they were met by a group of 40 upperclassman who were to become their Big Brothers. The two groups played basketball and volleyball together as they awaited the arrival of the remaining freshmen. When all 79 were there, the Big Brothers formed a double line in front of the chapel and applauded them as their new ‘little brothers’ passed between them to attend the welcoming talk by Mr. H. (Rudy Herrera, our Director of Youth Ministry and Student Life). He then passed the reins over to the retreat team. The entire Salesian Experience was under the leadership of the “Big Four”: junior Nicholas Garcia (MAT), seniors Michael Garcia (MAT), Nicholas Quezada (IDEA), and Theodore Truong (MSET), and essential help from the upperclassmen Big Brothers.

When St John Bosco gathered together his first group of orphans, he decided to use an oratory model to teach them. He used the elements of Home, Church, School, and Playground to help his students as recognizable concepts, in order to increase understanding and become successful in this life, as well as successful in reaching happiness in the life to come. Our retreat leaders chose his oratory model in planning the retreat. By the time the little brothers had enjoyed their delicious home-cooked lunch, they definitely had experienced all four elements. Freshman Josiah Villasenior told us that he had “a lot of fun at the retreat. The whole Oratory ‘thing’ just confirmed that it is all real. I lived it out on the retreat.”

To get to know each other better, they were led by the Big Brothers through a series of ice breakers. To cool everyone off, this ended in what was supposed to be a water balloon toss, but which turned into a friendly water balloon ‘ambush’ by the Big Brothers.

After the little brothers’ initial confusion, they quickly rallied and returned fire on the Big Brothers. Mr. H even fell victim to a few well-tossed water balloons and a huge tub of water. After adding more calories with a filling, tasty dinner, the freshmen were ready to take on their evening experiences. The first was a 19-stage scavenger hunt which involved continuously running all over the campus to complete the tasks. (continued on next page)

Fඋൾඌඁආൺඇ Sൺඅൾඌංൺඇ Eඑඉൾඋංൾඇർൾ (ਃਏ਎ਔਉ਎ਕਅ਄) One creative task involved wrapping up a few lucky freshmen as mummies. The hunt winners got to pick which room their group would sleep in (the best air conditioning was their main criteria).

After bonding all day, everyone entered the chapel to start the transition into the evenings’ reconciliation service. The boys were led to the football field where they gathered in small groups. During this time, four of our Salesian priests, led by Fr. Thien Nguyen SDB, our Salesian Director, was on hand, giving the boys the opportunity to reestablish their friendship with God through individual confession. Gianni Carrano said of his experience: “Aside from all the fun, the bonding my group did on the football field was the most important thing. For me, it gave me a sense of the school’s spiritual morals and values. My Big Brothers shared with me about their freshmen retreat and about their FSP. I got to know about the school’s history.”

The evening ended with the traditional Salesian Good Night prayer, practiced by St. John Bosco. After lights out at midnight, some actually got to get some sleep.

Early Saturday morning, the retreat continued with breakfast and a trip to Huntington State Beach. There, they were first given a safety talk by a lifeguard, and then their beach experience began with some braving the chilly water. Others started by enjoying games of volleyball and dodgeball, as well as throwing frisbees. Some just relaxed.

Lunch and dinner, prepared by hard-working parent volunteers, were extremely popular. Without about 15 adult volunteers, some of whom stayed up all night to chaperone the boys, the retreat could not have happened. A highlight of the retreat was definitely the Mass said on the beach by Fr. Thien Nguyen.

The freshmen ended their retreat back at the Tech with the Salesian Good Night, this time joined by their parents. As parents entered the gym, the big and little brothers greeted them with a spontaneous and well deserved applause. At the end of the prayer service, the Class of 2026 went home feeling grateful for the new friends they had made, the school they had chosen, and their memorable start to their coming four years at Bosco Tech.

A week after the retreat, we asked Gianni and Josiah what they felt had been the longer after-effects from the experience. They said that they would consider volunteering for next year’s summer retreat.

They felt the retreat was a real bonding experience.

Gianni added that he really felt he had made the right choice coming to Bosco. Each wanted to thank all the big brothers and teachers who made the retreat possible.

Fඋൾඌඁආൺඇ Tൾർඁඇඈඅඈ඀ඒ Sൾඅൾർඍංඈඇ Pඋඈർൾඌඌ Now that Bosco Tech’s freshman class has successfully completed the two-week Freshman Summer Program (FSP), they are gearing up for the official academic year.

During the first semester, class members will spend their technology time rotating through three introductory programs of their choosing. These overview courses will inform students of the varied classes, exciting projects, and college and career opportunities associated with that technology major.

Every six weeks, parents and guardians are required to attend a special meeting with teachers, called the Technology Information Session (TIS): TIS #1 Wednesday, Sept. 14 TIS #2 Tuesday, Oct. 26, 6 p.m.

TIS #3 Sun., Nov. 6 , 11:30 a.m., between Freshman Tie Ceremony and Open House These important meetings provide parents information about each program so the final decision in selecting a technology major better involves both the parent and student.

On Saturday, December 10, each freshman and at least one parent or guardian must attend Technology Selection Day. Students will be scheduled, in order of their GPA, to be interviewed before determining their final technology choice. This important day results in the student being placed into the technology program that he will study for the next three and a half years at Bosco Tech.

Questions regarding the technology programs offered at Bosco Tech should be directed to each technology chair or Assistant Principal Eric Tom at etom@boscotech.edu.

The FACTS Family Portal gives you a convenient opportunity to get more involved in your son’s academic progress and future success, all online. A private and secure parents’ portal, it allows you to view academic information specific to your son, while protecting his information. You can also communicate with teachers and other school staff members online whenever necessary.

Here’s how to access our easy-to-use FACTS Family Portal: If you have created an account at the time of admissions to Bosco Tech and created a username and password, please continue to the following instructions to login; In Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer, go to www.boscotech.edu and click on Student/Parent Hub at the top right hand corner. Scroll down halfway through the page and click on FACTS Login button.

The School's District Code: DBTI-CA. Type in your Username and Password used to create the Admission application, select Parent and Login.

Once on the FACTS Family Portal home page, you will have access to the school announcements, calendar, faculty & staff directory, resource documents-all school flyers, school forms, The Gear newsletter, student grades, class schedules, FACTS payment plans, reenrollment, FACTS Grant & Aid, and more.

Parents who have not created a username and password please follow the instructions below: Go to the Bosco Tech website (www.boscotech.edu) and click on Student & Parent Hub at the top righthand corner, scroll halfway down the page and click on the FACTS Login. Type the school's District Code: DBTI-CA, and click on Create New Family Portal Account. Type your Email Address and click on Create Account. An email will be sent to your email address that includes a link to create your FACTS Family Portal login. The link is active for six hours only. Click on Create your FACTS Family Portal Login link within the email sent to you. A web browser displays your name and FACTS personal ID. Type a User Name, Password, Confirm your password and Save. You will receive a message stating “User Name/Password Successfully Updated.”

Logging back into FACTS Family Portal: go to www.boscotech.edu, click on Student/Parent Hub at the top right-hand corner, then scroll halfway down the page and click on FACTS Login, District Code: DBTICA, Username and Password click on Parent and Login.

TIP #1 – KNOW YOUR EFC Take a few moments today to estimate your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) https://studentaid.gov/aid-estimator/  Your EFC, or Expected Family Contribution, is the yearly amount the government estimates you should be able to pay for college  This amount is determined by filling out the FAFSA, (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or CADAA (California Dream Act Application).  The FAFSA or CADAA will ask questions about your finances and family size, as well as ask you to input previous years’ tax data.  You can file the FAFSA Oct 1 - March 2.  Your EFC will also determine whether you are eligible for federal and state need-based aid and grants, such as the Pell Grant or CalGrant Knowing your EFC will help you understand how much colleges will be expecting you to pay out of pocket each year, and understand how much in loans, grants, and scholarships will be needed to cover the cost of particular colleges and universities.

Have a conversation as a family about the cost of college and what amount (if any) of loans your family is comfortable taking on.

TIP #2 – FIND & USE THE NET PRICE CALCULATOR Each college and university is required to provide a Net Price Calculator somewhere on their website. When researching colleges to understand and estimate what you may be asked to pay for each school. (Tip: Google search “(Name of College)” + “Net Price Calculator” to easily find the right site.)

Our college counseling software, Scoir, also has NetPrice tools for parents. Login & see the “Cost & Aid” tab for any school. If you need help accessing your Scoir account, email Ms. Gambill at cgambill@boscotech.edu.

TIP #3 – GET FAMILIAR WITH WUE The Western Undergraduate Exchange, better known as WUE, (pronounced woo-eee) is a collection of over 160 colleges and universities that have a “tuition exchange.” That is, at many participating schools, CA residents will only pay a maximum of 150% of in-state tuition. In some cases, it may be less expensive to go to an out-of-state WUE school than to stay in-state in CA.  Some colleges offer “WUE for all” – that is, all CA students who are accepted are automatically given the WUE tuition rate.

— The University of Arizona only grants WUE to two majors: Mining Engineering and Natural Resources — Arizona State only grants WUE to ten majors: Applied Science (Emergency Management), Community Development, Community Sports Management, NonProfit Leadership & Management, Parks & Recreation Management, Public Service & Public Policy, Recreation Therapy, Social Work, Tourism Development & Management, and Urban and Metropolitan Studies  Use the WICHE WUE Savings Finder to explore colleges who offer WUE, the eligibility requirements and program details — You can also search for WUE information on the specific college’s Financial Aid or Scholarships page TIP #4 – EXPLORE YOUR NETWORK FOR SCHOLARSHIPS  Are you a member of a union or service organization? If so, they likely offer scholarships.  Check to see if your employer offers scholarships to children of its employees  Ask your son to fill out Raise.me and like/follow schools he is interested in. When he is accepted and commits to attend, he will be able to cash out the $$ towards his tuition and fees.  Does your local church, temple or parish offer a scholarship for members?  Check out your local Rotary, Lions or Kiwanis Clubs, Elk or Moose Lodges, VFW or Veterans organizations, Chamber of Commerce, or Heritage Organizations. Many students find more success with local organizations than with large, national scholarships TIP #5 – BE WARY OF PREDATORY LENDERS & WEBSITES Unfortunately, there are websites looking to take advantage of families trying to afford college. This is great article that discusses common scams to avoid.

Some good rules of thumb: 1. Never pay for scholarship, grant, or financial aid search or match services 2. Do not pay for services claiming to help you fill out the FAFSA or CADAA 3. Avoid companies that ask you to pay up front to consolidate your student loans 4. Do not consolidate private & federal loans into one private loan – you will lose your federal interest rate and federal loan protections (ex: deferment, income-based repayment plans) 5. Be wary of Student Debt Relief scams, and do NOT give away your FSA ID

Attendance In the event of an absence, please notify the Attendance Office at (626) 940-2002 or attendance@boscotech.edu and leave a message on the answering service by 9 a.m. The parent/guardian calling must state the following: a) student's name, year, and ID # b) reason for the student's absence c) phone number where the parent/guardian may be reached during the day.

Upon returning to campus, the student must present a signed note to the attendance office stating the dates and reason for the absence. If the student was treated by a physician, he must bring a note from the doctor.

The note must state: a) the date the student is permitted to return to school and b) any restrictions regarding participation in school activities such as PE, sports or technology.

Tardies A student is tardy to school if he is not in his assigned place when the first period bell rings. If tardy, he must obtain a late slip from the Attendance Office. A note from a parent/ guardian should always be presented explaining the reason for tardiness, although this does not assure the student an excused tardy. Disciplinary action will be taken if the reason for the tardy is not recognized as valid.

Students are given four verbal warnings before detentions are issued. They will begin to serve after-school detention once they have accumulated their fifth tardy and serve Saturday detentions after their eighth tardy. After the eighth tardy, parents will be contacted and a parent conference will be required to develop a plan that will assist the student in being punctual to class. Fifteen tardies per semester are the maximum allowed before credit for the course becomes null.

Student drop offs Parents are asked not to drop off or pick up students in the front administration parking lot because of the inherent danger this causes students on foot; instead, parents are asked to use the south parking lot to drop off/pick up students before/after school. Please observe the ‘no parking’ areas in front of the school, including the bus stop and designated emergency vehicle zones. Parents’ vehicles are never allowed on campus unless by specific permission.

Closed campus For the safety of our school community, Bosco Tech is a closed campus between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:05 p.m. Visitors must sign in in the front lobby and be escorted to their requested location on campus. Upon completing business on campus, visitors must check out as they leave.

Lunch drop offs Dropping off lunch or lunch money after 8 a.m. is strongly discouraged, as this requires a dean to deliver such items to a specific student. If you have pre-arranged with your son to drop off lunch/money, the student should pick it up in the front lobby during his lunch hour.

Delivery of drop offs cannot be guaranteed. All lunches left unclaimed after 3:05 p.m. will be disposed of.

Have you heard the news? The Bosco Tech Mothers' Luncheon is just around the corner and we don’t want anyone to miss it! So be sure to join us on Sunday, September 25 at 10:00 a.m. for another great event hosted by the Bosco Tech Parent Council. You will have the opportunity to meet other new moms, exchange information, get to know each other, and build new friendships that will last for the next four years. The day will start with Mass at 10 a.m. in the Father Penna Chapel, located next to Tech Hall, and luncheon to follow in our Bosco Tech gardens.

There will be raffles throughout the event, and a SPECIAL HAT CONTEST for all to participate in.

So be sure to wear your Sunday best and the winning hat! Make it fun and crazy, big and fluffy or just simple and sweet.

Special request: This event is for moms only, so we ask that you please leave your little tigers at home. Although students do not attend this event, there will be many more events throughout the year which students and parents can attend together.
