Bosco Tech -- State of The School Address on Monday, September 13, at 6 p.m.

Welcome back, Bosco Tech Family— During the past year, the Board of Trustees and Administration took on the responsibility of creating a strategic plan for Bosco Tech. Although it was a pandemic year, we recognized the opportunity to assess our position and start the process of visualizing a greater Tech for the future of our community.

The process included gathering data from parents, alumni, industry, and other community members. After analyzing the data, we clarified our mission, established a new vision statement, and established 4 key goals that focus on educational programs, operations, facilities, and financial growth.

Last month, we met with our architects to create a new master facilities plan that incorporated important feedback we received from parents, alumni and staff. The data was critical as it informed our decisions on the facility priorities. In addition, our steering committee participated in a four -day workshop focusing on design concepts and aesthetics. I believe you will be pleased to see the amazing results and plan!

I look forward to sharing the details of our Strategic Plan and the Master Plan of OUR new facilities. I’m excited about the changes that will create a new Tech for the next generation of students.

The unveiling of the plans will first be presented at the Leadership Donor Dinner on Thursday, Sept. 9.

This presentation is by invitation only.

Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋංඇർංඉൺඅ Dear Bosco Tech Family— I hope your family had a restful summer! We’re looking forward to seeing you and your sons in person as the new school year begins! I know I speak for the faculty and administration when I say that we have missed you and the positive synergy of being together as a community.

As the 2021-2022 school year begins, please know that we are watchfully and carefully optimistic—while we celebrate a full return to campus, we remain vigilant in efforts to keep each person safe and healthy. We will follow all safety and hygiene protocol implemented in the spring’s return to campus plan. As mentioned in my letter over the summer:  faculty and staff are fully vaccinated  each classroom is equipped with an air purifying system  masks are mandated across campus for all  safe social distancing measures are being upheld  ample handwashing stations and hand sanitizers readily available.

Your son’s health and safety remain paramount!

Following orientation and the first day of classes, our virtual Back-to-School Night will kick off our first online gathering of parents and faculty for the school year. Please plan to tune in on Thursday, August 19, beginning at 5:30 p.m. to meet your son’s instructors and learn about what they will be accomplishing in the year ahead. We will work in tandem with you to make this a positive, beneficial academic year for our young people! It is my prayer that the Lord will guide us in all we do to ensure a year of accomplishment for our dedicated students.

Wൾඅർඈආൾ, Fඋ. Tඁංൾඇ N඀ඎඒൾඇ, SDB, Sൺඅൾඌංൺඇ Dංඋൾർඍඈඋ “Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matt. 5:48) That’s Bosco Tech’s new Salesian Director Fr. Thien Nguyen’s favorite scripture.

“The idea is to be as wholly who we are, as God is whole,” he explained. “We are meant to fulfill God's vision. God created us like his image, and his image is love. We are called to love God, love others, and love ourselves. Whatever I do, I have to show God's love. It reminds me of the sign I often see, WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?)” This year, Fr. Thien plans to share that message with students and faculty, along with his encouragement to “Be a TECH for others: T-Thank God and thank others. It's an expression of gratitude (Church) E-Education. Learn as much as you can and learn well (School) C-Cheerful. Bring joy, humor, and good spirit to yourself and others (Playground) H-Heart. Everything starts with a kind heart” (Home).

“I just follow Don Bosco's advice,” he shared. "’It is not enough to love the young, they must know that they are loved.’"

Fr. Thien first joined the order in 1993, after being introduced by Salesian nuns in his native Vietnam, where evangelization and ministry were underground efforts because of a Communist regime. Moved by the sisters’ kindness to young people, Fr. Thien studied and was ordained in 2012 shortly after moving to the U.S. He has worked in the Western Region Province, primarily in Northern California, including a two-year assignment on the Tech campus in the early 2000s. He also has served in the vocations team and social communications delegate for the province. Most recently, he has served as chaplain at Watsonville High School and as director of religious education at San Francisco’s Saints Peter and Paul Church.

“The challenge to me, in ministry and as an educator, is to creatively interpret and make my own Don Bosco's extraordinarily successful experience with the young. Advice from our Salesian patron saint, St. Francis de Sales, says ‘Be who you are and be that well.’"

Joining Fr.Thien on campus this year are Brother Al Vu, SDB, and our own Fr. Chinh Nguyen, SDB, returning to us and assisting at a limited level in the Youth Ministry. Please join us in welcoming all three into our Tech community!

“We’re thrilled that Ms. Gambill is joining our successful academic counseling and college advisement team,” said Guillermo (Memo) Gutierrez, Bosco Tech’s President. “Working closely with students and their families, she will play a vital navigational role in the high school-to-university experience, and with a strong background in the private school setting, she will be an invaluable addition to our school community.”

Gambill is an educator and administrator with a background in curriculum design and development. Most recently, she served as Academic Dean at West Los Angeles’ Arete Preparatory Academy, where she taught Philosophy, English, and History, and provided college counseling and academic advisement. Previously, she was a consultant at The MEG School and at MY Education Guru, a comprehensive educational coaching service with 100 percent higher education placement. A graduate of Ohio University and UC Riverside, Ms. Gambill holds degrees in Journalism and Religious Studies.

“I am so happy to be joining Bosco Tech’s thriving academic counseling program,” said Gambill.

“Coming from a background where 95 percent of seniors were admitted to their first-choice colleges and universities, I am primarily focused on students’ plans for their future and helping them navigate their individual paths toward achievement.”

Addressing the worldwide Salesian family, Rector Major Ángel Fernández Artime recently elaborated on the theme of the Strenna (gift) for 2022, emblem of the Salesian call to action: “This year's Strenna will also be a wonderful opportunity to recognize and find oneself in the spirituality of St Francis de Sales and to appreciate even more the magnificent characteristics of Don Bosco's Salesian spirit, as also the precious values of Salesian youth spirituality.

We will undoubtedly see ourselves reflected in them and feel called today to be “more Salesian” in our Salesian Family, that is to say, more filled with the spirit of St Francis de Sales, a spirit that permeates our Salesianity as the family of Don Bosco.”

Iආඉඈඋඍൺඇඍ Cൺආඉඎඌ Pඈඅංർඒ Rൾආංඇൽൾඋඌ As we move into the new school year, please review these important guidelines. For a full description, see the 2021-2022 Parent-Student Handbook.

Attendance In the event of an absence, please call the Attendance Office at (626) 940-2002 and leave a message on the answering service by 9 a.m. The parent/guardian calling must state the following: a) student's name, year, and ID # b) reason for the student's absence c) phone number where the parent/guardian may be reached during the day.

Upon returning to campus, the student must present a signed note to the attendance office stating the dates and reason for the absence. If the student was treated by a physician, he must bring a note from the doctor.

The note must state: a) the date the student is permitted to return to school and b) any restrictions regarding participation in school activities such as PE, sports or technology.

Tardies A student is tardy to school if he is not in his assigned place when the first period bell rings. If tardy, he must obtain a late slip from the Attendance Office. A note from a parent/ guardian should always be presented explaining the reason for tardiness, although this does not assure the student an excused tardy. Disciplinary action will be taken if the reason for the tardy is not recognized as valid.

Students are given four verbal warnings before detentions are issued. They will begin to serve after-school detention once they have accumulated their fifth tardy and serve Saturday detentions after their eighth tardy. After the eighth tardy, parents will be contacted and a parent conference will be required to develop a plan that will assist the student in being punctual to class. Fifteen tardies per semester are the maximum allowed before credit for the course becomes null.

Student drop offs Parents are asked not to drop off or pick up students in the front administration parking lot because of the inherent danger this causes students on foot; instead, parents are asked to use the south parking lot to drop off/pick up students before/after school. Please observe the ‘no parking’ areas in front of the school, including the bus stop and designated emergency vehicle zones. Parents’ vehicles are never allowed on campus unless by specific permission.

Closed campus For the safety of our school community, Bosco Tech is a closed campus between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:05 p.m. Visitors must sign in in the front lobby and be escorted to their requested location on campus. Upon completing business on campus, visitors must check out as they leave.

Lunch drop offs Dropping off lunch or lunch money after 8 a.m. is strongly discouraged, as this requires a dean to deliver such items to a specific student. If you have pre-arranged with your son to drop off lunch/money, the student should pick it up in the front lobby during his lunch hour.

Delivery of drop offs cannot be guaranteed. All lunches left unclaimed after 3:05 p.m. will be disposed of.

Fඋൾඌඁආൺඇ Tൾർඁඇඈඅඈ඀ඒ Sൾඅൾർඍංඈඇ Pඋඈർൾඌඌ Now that Bosco Tech’s freshman class has successfully completed the two-week Freshman Summer Program (FSP), they are gearing up for the official academic year.

During the first semester, class members will spend their technology time rotating through three introductory programs of their choosing. These overview courses will inform students of the varied classes, exciting projects, and college and career opportunities associated with that technology major.

Every six weeks, parents and guardians are required to attend a special meeting with teachers, called the Technology Information Session (TIS): TIS #1 Wednesday, Sept. 15, 7 p.m.

TIS #2 Tuesday, Oct. 19, 6 p.m.

TIS #3 Sun., Nov. 14 (prior to Open House), 11:30 a.m.

These important meetings provide parents information about each program so the final decision in selecting a technology major better involves both the parent and student.

On Saturday, December 4, each freshman and at least one parent or guardian must attend Technology Selection Day. Students will be scheduled, in order of their GPA, to be interviewed before determining their final technology choice. This important day results in the student being placed into the technology program that he will study for the next three and a half years at Bosco Tech.

Sർඁඈඈඅ Pංർඍඎඋൾ Dൺඒ ංඌ Aඎ඀ඎඌඍ 25 Please note that Wednesday, August 25, is school picture day. It is a formal dress day for all students.

Flyers with photo package information will be passed out to students on the first day of class (check with your son) and are also available at mylifetouch.com. LifeTouch customer service can be reached at (626) 577-7012. Picture make-up day is Friday, September 10.

As we begin to plan for the upcoming school year, in a very different way because of the Covid-19 pandemic, we look back at the amazing accomplishments of our band students and parents this past year during these unprecedented times. Last school year may not have ended the way we envisioned, but the new one will start off strong. From our annual Band Camp, to the “Friday Night Lights” at the DBTI Football games, our Winter Concert and many other community event performances, the band is anticipating an extremely busy start. Thank you to our amazing band parents and especially the Band Boosters for planning our future Band fundraisers that truly make a difference in our Music Program. Some of those events will include the Citadel Shopping Extravaganza, Applebee’s Breakfast, the Tournament of Roses Parade, QuarterMania and our most recent staple fundraiser, Family Movie Night Under the Stars! Each event will be so much fun!

One of the many highlights our band members experienced this past year, and one they will always remember, was their participation in our virtual concert. Band members will have an opportunity to attend an all-morning band camp where they will train and march with the world’s famous USC Trojan Marching Band, also known as the “Spirit of Troy” on the beautiful USC Campus.

Even though 2021 posed many challenges for students, teachers, parents, faculty and staff, our Music Program truly shone through their innovative approach. A virtual concert and several successful fundraising events were held during the year. Thanks to our Band Director, Mr. Almanza, and his amazing coaches, band practices continued “virtually.” Mr. Almanza created an on-line system, which allowed members to practice from the comfort of their homes, culminating in a world-class performance online for their families to enjoy. Several families who resided out-of-state and even in Mexico were able watch the concert remotely. A special thank you to Mr. Almanza, all coaches, and the Boosters for making that performance possible. Mr. Almaza and the Boosters have scheduled our famous yearly concerts to include the Winter Concert, Jazz Night Out and lastly the Spring Concert. Student leaders Elias Loya, Alexander Ibanez, Ethan Csombor, Santiago Alvarez, Osmara Olguin, Austin Barrera, Walter Menendez, Matthew Wong, and Gustavo Galarza have been working arduously for the past five weeks cleaning and organizing the instruments and the band room for this new and exciting year.

We hope this gives you just a glimpse of how special the DBTI Music Program will be this new year. We are now planning for the 2021-2022 Band season and the Band is excited to welcome new members. Hello Bosco Tech School Community, Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! I want to say thank you to all the student-athletes, parents, coaches, faculty, staff, administration and supporters from this past sports season. Your support was greatly appreciated. Our student-athletes from this past school year showcased resilience, determination and pride by representing our school community.

Every program had growth during this past season. We added one new varsity program, ESports. We had thirty student-athletes participate in the first official ESports season this past spring. Even though we didn’t have a lacrosse season, senior Nathaniel De Berry signed his national letter of intent to play at Adrian College in Michigan. We are so proud of his wonderful accomplishment!

Our Athletic Department had a total of seven students earning first team all-league status and eight students earning second team all-league. In addition, we had one student-athlete earning first team All CIF Division 5A Basketball team and we had another student who earned second team Southern California Basketball Coaches Association. Both Volleyball and Basketball made it to the CIF playoffs. Basketball made it to the quarter-finalists appearance.

We will start our athletic calendar with the Fall sports seasons and the teams that compete in this season are: Football, Cross Country and ESports. All three programs return a lot of starters and key returns for their respective programs. Please stay up to date with all Athletic Department information on the school website and follow the Athletic Department Instagram page on social media.

I look forward to seeing all of you supporting and cheering for our student-athletes and our Athletic Department during the school year.

At the start of the program’s creation, although remote due to COVID restrictions and stay-at-home guidelines (Spring Semester 2021), we had 26 student-athletes competing in our Esports teams, each representing a different video game title for sanctioned CIF & club sports, alongside, a strong team of 36 boys actively participating in the Tech’s ESports club side.

Today, with the help and support of administration, parents, and students, those passionate about ESports and competition, the Bosco Tech Esports program has an active 125 members in the club, an estimated 65+ student-athletes for Athletics, and now offers a multitude of internships within the program that allows students interested in Journalism, Graphic Design, Film & Photography, Marketing, Social Media, & Web Development to pursue their passions while obtaining credit on their transcripts for universities.

The current ESports athletic program line-up includes: League of Legends, Rocket League, Valorant, Madden 21; partnered with new inclusions of Splatoon 2, Overwatch, NBA 2K22, and more.

Our Bosco Tech family is very excited to see how well our boys will do in both the Fall & Spring seasons and hopefully, once again, making it to the Playoffs against schools like Salesian & St. John Bosco. In the previous season, our Valorant Varsity team knocked out Mater Dei High School and St. John Bosco JV from the bracket during the semi-finals of the Trinity Esports League hosted by Mater Dei. With the start of this new school year and the return of students on campus, the Bosco Tech ESports program is very excited to continue growing and offering opportunities to our student-athletes and developing great passions that last a lifetime.
