Tech Student Interns & Mentors Make Summer Count

Message from the President Welcome back, Tech family— It’s my honor to welcome you to the start of Bosco Tech’s 66th year. Although the 2020-2021 year begins in a different way, our timeless mission and commitment to educating young people remains unchanged. As we begin classes, please join with me in praying for our students, that the Lord may guide and direct their studies, and that He would be glorified in the coming months, in all we do.

As you know, Fr. Chinh Nguyen, SDB, our beloved Salesian Director, suffered a stroke last spring. He is recuperating well and rapidly regaining strength, but still needs adequate time to rest. In his temporary absence, Fr. Thinh Nguyen, SDB, a member of our on-campus Salesian community (but not related to Fr. Chinh), will fill in as interim Salesian Director. Fr. Thinh is available to provide counsel to students and their families, and will direct our faith community until Fr. Chinh’s welcome return to full-time ministry. We are blessed to have both these men of God in the Tech family!

While students were distance learning last spring, followed by a summer spent at home, we’ve been busy on campus. I’m pleased to share that we are the grateful recipients of two exciting and impactful grants.

Understanding the need for greatly increased connectivity for instructors, counselors and administrative staff, the Michael J. Connell Foundation has provided funds for the purchase of new laptops for each faculty and staff member. This gift will arm our staff with the most effective and current technology equipment needed to effectively navigate online instruction.

Additionally, and very generously, The Ahmanson Foundation has given a large grant to support the school’s capital infrastructure upgrade project. The grant will provide new roofs for fourteen campus buildings.

We are grateful for both practical and most generous gifts. Both foundations have been extremely supportive of the Tech and pivotal in the fulfillment of our mission since the beginning. We are truly honored to have their confidence in our work with young people.

Our always-popular Golf Classic and Black & Gold Gala, postponed due to mandated stay-at-home orders, have been rescheduled. Please join us on Friday, Sept. 25 to golf and at the virtual Gala on Saturday, Oct. 17—mark your calendars now! Our work to continue raising tuition assistance funds is more vital than ever during the economic uncertainty faced by many families during the pandemic, and I ask that you help us help these hard-working young people!

May this new school year begin with positive anticipation for the time when we will all be together again on campus. I know that is something none of us will take for granted in the future! Until then, may the Lord bless you and your loved ones, who all are part of our Tech family.

Drum Major Attends “Leadership in Music” Program Congratulations to Bosco Tech rising senior Diego Alvarez (MSET), who was selected as one of ten scholarship recipients to attend this summer’s Leadership in Music program hosted and sponsored by the Pacific Crest Youth Arts Organization, Latino Community Network, and City National Bank.

Diego has participated in the Marching Band, Symphonic Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble over the past three years at Bosco Tech. During the 2019-20 school year, he held the Assistant Drum Major position, where he established himself as a leader, thoughtful decision-maker, and strong woodwind player. He has been so influential to the Music Program that 86% of program members voted for him as Drum Major for the 2020-21 school year.

Message from the Principal (For the full Message from the Principal, please visit the school’s website, under “Getting Ready for Fall”) Dear Bosco Tech Parents and Guardians— Welcome back! I pray this finds you well. In a previous message, I shared that we were preparing to start the year with the hope of a safe return to campus using a hybrid instructional model, effectively employing both live/in-person and remote learning. Working with a task force of several veteran teachers, counselors and administrators, we have developed plans for a variety of school opening scenarios. Two things that define us as a school ultimately guide us in our decision-making: • Our Catholic identity centers around a respect for life. We respect the

lives, health, and safety of our students, their families, and our faculty and staff. Bringing students back too soon can endanger all these groups.

A recent article in The New York Times detailed how adolescents can transmit the COVID-19 virus as easily as adults, even while showing fewer symptoms while contagious and experiencing lower fatality rates. (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/18/health/coronavirus-children-schools.html).

• As a STEM school, we trust in science. The data does not support an in-person return to school at this time. The CDC’s original statement on reopening a place of business, adapted by Governor Newsom’s July 17 declaration, requires 14 days of decreasing positive tests, abundant testing capability, adequate contact tracing, and sufficient empty hospital beds. (https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/ CDPH%20Document%20Library/COVID-19/SHO%20Order%20Dimming%20Entire%20State%207-132020.pdf ). LA County is not nearly ready by these standards and going back too early can potentially put the health and lives of our entire Bosco Tech community at risk. It can also add to the pressure on government to shut down businesses again, at which point we would have to again shift back to distance learning, further disrupting the educational process for our students.

With a start date of August 17, it is clear that we need to begin the school year with the safest instructional program, which is distance/remote learning. We will remain in remote learning until transmission rates improve and county officials begin to remove restrictions.

That said, Bosco Tech has the capability to do distance learning better than anyone; our overriding goal is to continue to grow and enhance our students’ remote learning experience by improving daily interaction, schedule, student expectations and routines, student support, and spiritual and religious formation, while adding more community events. While we are continuing to prepare plans to return students to the campus, we are focusing on making sure the learning process and delivery of the Bosco Tech curriculum proceeds uninterrupted.

St. John Bosco once said, “…that education is a matter of the heart.” We will continue his work, assisting our young men and reaching out to their hearts and minds as an important part of our mission. Bosco Tech has completed 65 years of successfully preparing young men from across the San Gabriel Valley for university and beyond, and we look forward to continuing that tradition in whatever educational format the pandemic places us.

Message from the Interim Salesian Director Dear Bosco Tech family— On behalf of our brother and priest Salesian community here at Bosco Tech, I would like to welcome our new teachers and freshman families; at the same time, welcome back to those returning to campus, especially our seniors who are beginning their last year with the opening of our school during this COVID-19 pandemic.

As a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, we affirm and trust in God with the words of Saint Paul in a letter to the Romans “What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through Christ who loved us… nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord.” (Romans 8:35) With this conviction, we will work to offer a human, religious and professional formation to our students, as each one of us continues to grow and deepen our Catholic faith, too.

As a Salesian school in our Western Province, along with our Salesian schools of St. Francis High School in Watsonville, Salesian College Preparatory in Richmond, Bishop Mora Salesian High School in Los Angeles and St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, we welcome our new Provincial, Fr. Mel Trinidad, SDB, who recently accepted the province’s leadership with the promise of our prayers for his service from 2020 thru 2026. Beginning our school year with thousands of other Salesian schools and other members of the Salesian family around the world, we also are invited to live the legacy that Don Bosco left us to become “Good Christians and Upright Citizens.” (Strenna 2020) May each one of us, under the protection and guidance of our Beloved Mother, Mary Help of Christians, continue the legacy that Bosco Tech began in 1955 and continues today for providing a truly Catholic and Salesian education.

Ahmanson Foundation Grant to Provide New Roofs Bosco Tech is very grateful to have received a large grant from The Ahmanson Foundation to support the school’s capital infrastructure upgrade project. The grant will provide new roofs for fourteen campus buildings.

“We are extremely fortunate to have the ongoing support of The Ahmanson Foundation,” said Bosco Tech President Memo Gutierrez. “The Foundation’s confidence in, and generosity toward, our school has deeply impacted the quality of our educational program and the students who have graduated over last six decades.

We are truly blessed by The Ahmanson Foundation’s overwhelming and continued generosity.”

“From donating vital scholarships to up-to-date computer technology, the Ahmanson Foundation has been instrumental in helping Bosco Tech to develop well-rounded young men who are technologically literate, intellectually curious and spiritually grounded, and for that we are most grateful.”

The Ahmanson Foundation has been a generous supporter of Bosco Tech from the beginning, 65 years ago, donating funds for scholarship support, instructional endowments, and campus redevelopment projects.

The much-needed infrastructure upgrade will significantly improve and enhance the school’s campus. In addition to the roof replacement component, the upgrades include the renovation of the Tech Hall auditorium and the replacement of old water, sewer and gas lines critical to supporting all facets of the campus.

Fr. Mel Trinidad, SDB, Named Salesian Provincial Congratulations to Fr. Mel Trinidad, former Bosco Tech Salesian Director, who has been installed as the Provincial of the Salesian of Don Bosco—Western Province for the next six years.

Fr. Mel was a popular fixture at the Tech as both a dean and a theology instructor, who also moderated Youth Ministry and Student Activities in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and as Salesian Director from 2007 to 2012. As Western Province Provincial, he succeeds Fr. Ted Montemayor who faithfully and effectively served in the role since 2014.

Please join us in praying for God’s wisdom and guidance for Fr. Mel in his new role.

School Picture Day is Coming Bosco Tech’s school picture day is in the works; watch your inbox for dates and details. A set time for individual students’ photo shoots will be provided. Picture day is a formal dress day for all students; the photos will be used in the yearbook and as ID card photos.

Due to COVID-19, strict guidelines for keeping students, faculty and photographers healthy and safe will be provided closer to the date.

Bosco Tech Welcomes New Athletic Director Bosco Tech has named Vincent Nolasco as its new Athletic Director. “It is my great pleasure to welcome back Mr. Nolasco on behalf of the Tech community,” said Memo Gutierrez, the school’s President. “As a Tech alumnus, Vince understands the effective Salesian educational system that is known worldwide for its focus on the overall development of young people through reason, religion and kindness. We look forward to Vince’s return to campus in the important role of Athletic Director.”

Nolasco brings years of experience in athletics and teaching, most recently serving as Athletic Director and Sports Marketing instructor at Christ the Teacher Catholic School in Newark, DE. He has both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Human Performance Science from New Mexico Highlands University. In his new role, Nolasco will oversee day-to-day operations of the Bosco Tech athletic department, as well assisting the finance office with endowments and tuition assistance. While a Tech student in the early 2000s, he was enrolled in the school’s Construction Technology program and played on the football and baseball teams.

"I am excited to be the Athletic Director at Don Bosco Tech Institute,” said Nolasco. “I’d like to thank the school’s administration and search committee for believing in me and providing me with this tremendous opportunity. Having spent the past eight years working in various athletic roles from elementary to NCAA Division II athletics, I have a great appreciation for the Tech’s amazing athletic facilities and teams in which student-athletes develop. I can't wait to see these young people grow in Christ and in sportsmanship. I’m excited to join the Bosco Tech community!” Welcome, Mr. Nolasco!

Welcome, Freshmen—Technology Selection Info Welcome, Bosco Tech graduating class of 2024! During the first semester, class members will spend their technology time rotating through three introductory programs of their choosing. These overview courses will inform students of the varied classes, exciting projects, and college and career opportunities associated with that technology major.

Every six weeks, parents and guardians are required to attend a special meeting with teachers, called the Technology Information Session (TIS): TIS #1 Wednesday, Sept. 10, 7 p.m. (via video conference) TIS #2 Wednesday, Oct. 21, 6 p.m. (format TBD) TIS #3 Sunday, Nov. 15, 11 a.m. (format TBD) These important meetings provide parents information about each program so the final decision in selecting a technology major better involves both the parent and student.

On Saturday, December 12, each freshman and at least one parent or guardian will attend Technology Selection Day. Students will be scheduled, in order of their GPA, to be interviewed before determining their final technology choice. You may choose a technology as long as you have: 1) Rotated through the tech, received a grade of C or higher and were recommended by the tech 2) Parent/guardian must have attended the Technology Information Session (TIS) for that tech 3) Student meets any math requirement: MSET and CSEE: B or higher in Integrated Math 1 C or higher in Int. Math 2 or 3 Other techs: no math requirement 4) There is space remaining (max enrollment is ~20/tech) This important day results in the student being placed into the technology program that he will study for the next three and a half years at Bosco Tech. Questions regarding the technology programs should be directed to each technology chair or Assistant Principal Eric Tom at etom@boscotech.edu.

Tech Students Named Advanced Placement Scholars This past May, 115 Bosco Tech students took a total of 254 Advanced Placement exams. Congratulations to the following students and recent graduates who earned recognition from the College Board for their superior performance on the AP exams.

An impressive 15 Bosco Tech students were named AP Scholars, 3 earned the AP Scholar with Honor title, 10 were awarded the coveted AP Scholar with Distinction designation, and 1 Tech student was named National AP Scholar. In addition, the National AP Scholar also earned an AP International Diploma, awarded to students who display exceptional achievement across a variety of disciplines.

Through the FACTS Family Portal, located on the homepage of the Tech website https://www.boscotech.edu/ at the top right -hand corner, you can access your son’s grades, class schedule, attendance, teacher information, as well as check your financial status and upcoming calendar dates. If you have not already accessed the portal, stepby-step instructions can be found on page 13 of this issue of The Gear.

New Grads Selected as Boeing Mentors Three Bosco Tech graduates were selected to serve as mentors in the Boeing Company’s prestigious Summer High School Internship program. Having completed Boeing internships last summer, they guided younger interns, including seven Tech students participating in the international defense and aerospace contractor’s seven-week STEM-focused educational program.

The coveted internships provide high schoolers with invaluable experience working under engineers and computer scientists. Interns are selected to participate based on high academic standing, strong communication skills, and excellent problem-solving abilities. This year, because a virtual internship format was employed due to COVID-19, the student mentors provided additional support, sharing their experiences and helping introduce the interns to Boeing’s protocol and to engineers and computer scientists participating in the program.

“Boeing is providing an amazing opportunity for everyone involved,” said Bosco Tech President Memo Gutierrez. “The mentor students benefitted tremendously as interns last year and now they have moved into an advisory capacity to help younger students. Boeing’s program has provided a practical application of STEM coursework for the many Tech students who have been fortunate enough to have participated through the years.”

The Bosco Tech mentors are: Aaron De Castro, George Flores and Raphael Napinas; they worked with cohorts of high school students from schools across Los Angeles County.

2020 graduates, the three are now beginning engineering studies at the university level.

Summer Interns Gain Invaluable Skills Congratulations to our students who completed prestigious summer internships at well-known organizations throughout the L.A. area. The ambitious students—10 rising seniors and two recent graduates—worked under the mentorship of engineers, architects, scientists and entrepreneurs to gain practical experience in professional and STEM fields. Special thanks to the organizations and individuals who made many of these internship opportunities possible.

Tech Summer Scholars

—100% Live Virtual Instruction, Tech & Science Kits, Fun! Creating a neuron out of Play-Doh, a solar-powered car from compact discs, and a mini-crossbow to better understand the laws of physics--seventh and eighth graders who participated in Bosco Tech’s Summer Scholar program have had a creative and productive summer!

The popular hands-on, four-week summer school program drew more than 85 students from across the San Gabriel Valley who were given complete material kits and step-by-step instruction through live video sessions to create fun and interesting STEM projects. Included were electrical circuitry kits that, after the program ends, provided participants with extended, related lessons through the remaining weeks of summer.

“I’m really proud of Vincent’s achievements this summer and so very grateful for what Bosco Tech provided through the program,” said Andre Hernandez, whose eighth grade son was a Summer Scholar.

“They had a lot of really cool engineering builds and thoughtful science lessons. It is a true blessing and very much needed during this difficult pandemic. I believe it gave a little bit of normalcy for the kids and taught them about things they haven’t encountered before.”

Broken down into sessions covering both science and technology, the Summer Scholar courses featured weekly guest presenters, Tech alumni successful in STEM fields, who shared inspirational stories about their educational and career paths with the young people.

“The Summer Scholar program goes far beyond a traditional summer school class,” said Brendan Chua, Bosco Tech Media Arts & Technology department chair and summer instructor.

“What these kids are doing is dynamically exploring technology and science, creating and testing their own examples of complex topics, and, most importantly, learning while having fun!”

A special drive-by event kicked off the program in June with students picking up all the required materials for the summer session. A second event recognized the scholars for their accomplishments and they were presented certificates of completion by their science and technology instructors at a socially distanced campus ceremony on July 18. Rising eighth grade Summer Scholars received a $1000 Tech Scholar award to be applied towards admission at the Tech.

Bosco Tech Music Program concludes Another Great Year, in Spite of COVID-19 Pandemic —By Band Booster Julie Patino

As we plan for the upcoming school year, in a very different way due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we take a look back at the amazing accomplishments of our band students and parents this past year.

The year may not have ended the way we envisioned, but it definitely started off strong. From our annual Band Camp, to the “Friday night lights” at the DBTI Football games, our Winter Concert and many other community event performances, the band had a very busy start.

Thank you to all of our amazing band parents and especially the Band Boosters for planning and participating in our Band fundraisers that truly make a difference in our Music Program. Some of those events included the Citadel Shopping Extravaganza, our traditional Cheesecake Fundraiser, Applebee’s Breakfast, the Tournament of Roses Parade and our newest fundraiser, QuarterMania! Each event was so much fun!

One of the many highlights our band members experienced this past year and will always remember, was participating in the Training for Troy, an all-morning band camp where our band students trained and marched with the world famous USC Trojan Marching Band, also known as the “Spirit of Troy,” on the beautiful USC Campus.

Yes, it was a great start for the 2019-2020 school year and our Music Program was truly shining. Then, on March 13, our school was officially affected by the pandemic. Students suddenly had to attend school virtually and life from that day changed. Thankfully, all to our Band Director Mr. Almanza and his amazing coaches, band practices continued “virtually.” Their Boston competition trip may have been cancelled, but the band continued to practice from home and in the end, they created a unique performance online for their families to enjoy. A special thank you to Mr. Almanza for making that performance possible!

We hope this gives you just a glimpse of how special the DBTI Music Program is. We are now planning for the 2020-21 Band season and the Band is excited to welcome new members.
