The Tech Hosts the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick

Message from the President Dear Bosco Tech Family— It’s my great pleasure to share with you a few recent campus happenings that are beneficial to our students and to the Tech and it’s reputation in the community.

On March 6, we were blessed to welcome back to campus the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick, the loyal support group of our trustee and friend, Bishop David O’Connell. The Unfriendly Sons hosted an amazing party that raised goal-exceeding funds for scholarship support. In honor of longtime Unfriendly Son, Mr. Tom Rowan, who was an advocate of the Tech, this amazing group (joined by our Tech parents, alumni and friends) hosted more than 200 folks who enjoyed live and silent auctions benefitting the school, and many of whom contributed to both the scholarship fund in Mr. Rowan’s name and to extensive equipment wish lists from each technology program.

Repeatedly, I was told by the evening’s guests how impressed they were by our students, who acted as event hosts and who manned technology display tables. The students’ self confidence, eloquence, and ability to explain highly technical subject matters were especially noteworthy to the visitors. We are grateful and humbled by our guests’ graciousness to the school and our students.

Later that week, the Tech was thrilled to host Abigail Norfleet James, Ph.D. as she spoke with faculty and parents about the male brain and it’s development at such an important time—high school. Dr. James discussed how boys develop differently than girls, and the importance of that understanding to the teaching here at Tech. After spending the day on campus, she left astounded by what’s happening at Bosco Tech: “They’ll tell you that Bosco Tech is the only school in the country who does what they do. I’m here to tell you that it is the only school IN THE WORLD that does what it does. I’ve been all over the world doing these programs, and this is the only school I’ve ever seen that blends college-prep academics with this level of dedicated programming in the applied sciences. To see these boys be so engaged in their learning is incredible. I’ve never seen anything quite like it - it’s so invigorating to see.”

And even more good news came immediately on the heels of those high notes; in the following pages, you’ll read about Tech senior Aman Kumar (CSEE ‘22), who has earned recognition as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist for both his impressive PSAT exam scores, as well as his overall academic record and impressive resume. We’re incredibly proud of Aman and all our hardworking students who are achieving their academic goals—take a look at the third-quarter honor roll on pages 5 and 6 to see that nearly 70% of the student body earned a spot on the Principal’s or President’s List.

What a truly positive way to enter the final quarter of the 2021-2022 school year! As we near the academic home stretch, may God continue to richly bless you and your family!

Educational Expert Dr. Abigail Norfleet James Meets with Tech Parents & Faculty

Tech Senior Named National Merit Finalist Kudos to Tech senior Aman Kumar (CS ‘22) who has earned the prestigious title of National Merit® Scholarship Finalist. With only 221 finalists named in California (one of the most difficult states in which to qualify), Aman’s recognition is well deserving of recognition!

The National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) results, based on the PSAT exam our seniors took in October 2020, named Aman a semi-finalist, a feat in itself, as only 16,000 juniors were named across the U.S. The semi-finalists represent less than 1 percent of all high-school seniors in the U.S. By submitting an additional application that includes high school records and college admissions test scores, students who are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies are named finalists.

Aman, who completed a summer internship at The Boeing Company, is ASB senior class and National Honor Society president, and co-founder of the Tech’s Techmen Tutoring peer program.

The nationally respected title of National Merit Finalist now makes Aman eligible for various merit-based college scholarships!

Well done, young man!

Coaching Champions— Alumnus is CSUF Titans Assistant Basketball Coach The California State University, Fullerton Titan men’s basketball team recently was named 2022 Big West champions, under the direction of their stellar coaching staff. Among those individuals is Tech alumnus Anthony Santos (Construction Technology ‘07), Assistant Basketball Coach of the team. Anthony was spotlighted in an online Titan Athletics profile.

"I can't even put into words the impact Anthony has had,” said Titans Head Coach Dedrique Taylor. “He obviously makes our program go; he's indispensable. If for some reason he's not present, it makes me nervous and uneasy. Anthony sees the game at an unbelievable pace in terms of not only having an idea of what our team is, but he also has an idea of what our opponents do and how we can and need to impact them. And he does a great job breaking things down and communicating with our players. Then they go out and execute those things."

Freshman Basketball Players Named All League & All CIF —By Athletic Director Vincent Nolasco

It was the first day of summer varsity basketball league on June 21 and Coach Romo told me “Tonight, you're going to see our two new freshmen who are going to play against Cantwell.” I was excited to learn more about Jaden Erami and Darius Benitez as student-athletes. Both Jaden and Darius played very well in their first summer varsity league basketball game. I told both what a great job they did after the game and how well they performed against Cantwell. We won the game. In addition, I went to Coach Romo and shared that I felt both Jaden and Darius are impact players for our basketball program and they are going to make an impact on our school community.

Fast forward, nine months after that first summer league, both Jaden and Darius earned All League honors and were named All CIF Division 5AA. They have showcased great leadership on the court, team and school community. Both athletes are humble and goal driven both in the classroom and on the court. I am very proud of how both Jaden and Darius have conducted themselves throughout the entire basketball season, starting with summer league then fall league and the winter season. We are very proud of all their accomplishments this school year. We are excited for their growth and the potential as Bosco Tech student-athletes. We are excited for the upcoming summer and fall basketball league season and for the upcoming winter season.

Track & Field Starts Off New Season —By Head Coach Blaze Fimbres & Assistant Coach Brad Stolz

The Bosco Tech Track & Field team has been getting ready for its season since December, when it started pre-conditioning. After New Year’s Day, it continued with actual conditioning, then practice, and finally beginning its season in March. We have a very young and somewhat inexperienced team of 40, with 28 being frosh/soph, and 30 being first-year track athletes.

Our first meet, the St. Paul Classic on March 3, was, for most of our team, the first time many had ever been to a track meet, as well as their first time participating in one. We have had six meets so far: two league meets, two invitational meets, and two distance races only meets. Each event, especially the first one, has been a great learning experience. With each meet, most athletes, possibly all, have bettered their personal record (PR), and often with large improvements. Individuals have already begun to earn their first medals, and are eager for more.

Even with such a young team, we are currently third in league. Junior Christian Perez is the favorite to win in the 800, 1600, and 3200 meter races. In our second league meet, Christian ran the sixth fastest 200, and the fourth fastest 400 that the Tech has had in the last 13years. In the past 15 years, Jake Ayala is Bosco’s third best sophomore thrower, and Daniel Cendejas is the fifth best freshman two miler. Daniel just ran in the 3200 meter invitational heat of the Arcadia Distance Challenge which featured some of the best underclassmen in Southern California and finished in the middle of the field with a new PR. Pi Day at the Tech Bosco Tech students did an amazing job memorizing pi in honor of the school’s 2022 Pi Day (March 14) Challenge, hosted by Mr. Erick Williams.

The results are: In 5th place, Auston Wu, with 51 digits memorized.

In 4th place, Christian Figueroa with 56.

In 3rd, Aman Kumar with 61.

In 2nd, Theodore Truong with 88.

And in 1st place, with 98 digits memorized, Andrew Placencia, who won a pie...naturally!

If you would like to create a dedication page for your son to be published in the 2022 yearbook, you can contact our yearbook publisher (Innovative Yearbook Solutions - iYBKs), pay the fee, and then follow the directions to upload your custom dedication page.

For ideas on what to include or how you might layout a dedication page, in addition to the suggestions made by our publisher, these can be found by doing a simple Google Image search using the keywords "senior yearbook dedication pages". Please note: dedication pages are only for seniors.

The $65 price ($80 after April 15) of the 2022 yearbook is in addition to the cost of the dedication page.

The fun-loving and generous crowd raised scholarship support for Tech students in honor of their friend, Mr. Tom Rowan, who passed in Dec. 2021, and who was a great supporter of the Tech. Special thanks to Tech alumnus Thomas Harkins, the evening’s piper (ME ‘69) who blessed the crowd with his impressive skills!

DBTI Music Program & Band News —By Band Booster Mrs. Monica Loya

This year, the DBTI Music Program will be combining our annual Jazz and Spring Concerts. It will be held Friday, May 20. More details will come as our planning continues! We will be honoring our outgoing seniors. Be on the look out for more details, we hope all will come out to enjoy our final performance of the year.

Archdiocese Christian Service Awardees Congratulations to Tech senior Carlos Campa (CSEE ‘22) and Mr. Carlos Plantillas, Dean of Student Services, who have been named recipients of this year’s Archdiocese Christian Service Award. The award is presented annually to outstanding students and instructors from local Catholic high schools for significant contributions in the area of Christian service.

Carlos Campa’s dedication to serving is evident in his campus involvement. In addition to his outstanding academic achievements and memberships in the National Honor Society and inclusion in the school’s honor roll, Carlos is president of both the Youth Ministry Core Team and the Ambassador Program. He is a member of the Key Club service organization and serves as Chaplain of Student Activities (ASB).

At the Tech since 1996, when he helped restart the school’s football team, Mr. Plantillas has served as freshman counselor, taught PE and Health Education, and served as a track and field coach. He then led the football team in back-to-back league championships in 2000 and 2001. In 2010, he was named Dean of Student Services and has remained a key advisor for Youth Ministry, Student Activities, Kairos, and athletics.

“Congratulations to Carlos and Mr. Plantillas,” said Tech Principal Jeff Krynen. “Both epitomize the best in leadership, citizenship, and Christian Service, and our campus community is blessed by their presence. I can’t think of more deserving recipients.”
