Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋൾඌංൽൾඇඍ Dear Bosco Tech family— I pray that you and your family are well! These have been interesting days for us all and it is my hope that you and your loved ones are in good health, as we all learn new ways to communicate, educate, and learn.

As your son settles in to distance learning, please remind him that his instructors, as well as all faculty and staff, are continually available to answer questions as they arise. Teachers are working hard to adapt their lessons to the online environment and we are committed to a successful semester, whether it be on campus or in your own home.

We will continue to follow the directives from state and local officials, as well as those published by the L.A. Archdiocese, as to when schools may reopen their campuses, and we will notify parents immediately when decisions are made to change the current status. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. In the meantime, please encourage your son to maintain a regular schedule and finish and submit assignments on time so that, when campus reopens to students, he is on top of his studies.

Please know that our Salesian Director, Fr. Chinh Nguyen, is also available to communicate with your son or you if you have concerns or are seeking prayer during this difficult time. As a vibrant faith community, we are continually reminded of the true source of our strength and peace!

Further, we understand the implications of these uncertain times. Our entire team is praying for Tech families, and the Business Office staff is doing everything in its power to accommodate those who have found themselves in an unforeseen situation. We consider our community a family and we will get through this together!

The timing of spring break and the temporary change to the school’s learning format comes on the heels of our accreditation site visit and preliminary report. The accrediting team of experienced educators presented their report and recommendations on Wednesday, March 11, after three intensive days of meetings and classroom visits. The team’s final report should be available in a few weeks. In summary, they affirmed our self study and gave a favorable review; we are well on course to renewing our six-year accreditation. Again, my thanks to our students, parents, faculty and staff who helped welcome our guests and shared our program from their unique perspectives.

Please know that you and your family remain in my prayers and I am looking forward to seeing you all again face to face soon!

Dංඌඍൺඇർൾ Lൾൺඋඇංඇ඀ & Pඈඌඍඉඈඇൾආൾඇඍ ඈൿ Cൺආඉඎඌ Eඏൾඇඍඌ In accord with the state and county’s directives in dealing with COVID-19, as well as those published by the L.A. Archdiocese, all Bosco Tech events have been postponed for the time being. That includes all athletic competitions and practices. This is out of an abundance of caution for our young people. We will continue to follow the guidance of public health experts to protect our students, families, staff and other members of our community. As we have more information, we will communicate and provide updates through announcements@boscotech.edu and our website.

Bosco Tech’s highest priority during this period will be to ensure our school is prepared to maintain learning. We have developed and shared with each student resources for online and distance learning. Moving instruction off campus is unprecedented, and we recognize the significant impact this extended closure will have on our community, students, families, and staff. We also acknowledge the burden this will place on our working families. As a community of faith, we must come together and help one another – communicate, share resources, offer support.

Already, our annual Black & Gold Gala, “Here’s to 65 Years: Lights, Camera, Action,” has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for what promises to be a great evening dedicated to raising funds for hardworking students!

Bඈඌർඈ Tൾർඁ’ඌ Aඋർඁൽංඈർൾඌൾ Cඁඋංඌඍංൺඇ Sൾඋඏංർൾ Aඐൺඋൽൾൾඌ Mr. Rudy Herrera, the Tech’s Coordinator of Youth Ministry, and senior Alexis Mendoza (MSET) are the recipients of this year’s Archdiocese Christian Service award. The award is presented annually to faculty members and students from local Catholic high schools for significant contributions in the area of Christian service. Although this year’s ceremony had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, these two leaders deserve our congratulations and our thanks for all they do to make the Tech and our community a better place!

Mr. Rodolpho Herrera (AU ‘80) Since joining the Tech faculty in 1985, Rudy Herrera has centered his life on Salesian presence and the accompaniment of students, whether it was in the classroom, on the playing field, while on retreat or during summer breaks.

As teacher, coach, mentor, and consistent, mature presence at both on– and off-campus activities, he has provided ceaseless and untiring support to Bosco Tech students, allowing them to grow into young men of “faith and integrity, committed to leading lives of distinguished service and social justice,” as written in our mission statement.

Mr. Herrera’s gentle, humble and selfless approach to living has served as a model to all who have known him. From leading retreat programs to organizing monthly character assemblies, arranging our periodic reconciliation services, directing students in food and toy drives, providing emotional counseling to young men in need, leading outreach ministry programs for our families in crisis, and overseeing our Christian Service program, Mr. Herrera, or “Mr. H,” epitomizes the standard of living one’s life for Jesus. Gospel values have provided a cornerstone for his mentorship and have assisted him in engaging our youth in keeping with our school philosophy in a manner that allows them to experience the four-fold Salesian Oratory model of being a Home, School, Church and Playground.

Among the roles that he has held on campus are Coordinator of Youth Ministry, Director of Christian Service Program, Admissions Director, theology and technology instructor, and head tennis coach.

Alexis Mendoza (MSET ‘20) Senior Alexis Mendoza (MSET) has certainly made the most of his time at the Tech! In addition to being an honor student, campus leader, and lacrosse team captain, he has committed himself to improving his community. Alexis is a Core Team Leader of the campus’ Youth Ministry program, and a retreat leader within the school’s Big Brother outreach to younger students. He is active in Salesian Youth Leadership and is an altar server and religious education instructor at his home parish, Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

The honor student, who plans to study medicine in order to become a surgeon or anesthesiologist, is president of Bosco Tech’s American Red Cross student chapter, and has volunteered in a variety of Red Cross efforts, including the organization’s Rose Parade volunteer team. In addition, he completed a summer internship with the Red Cross as a first responder in its disaster preparedness section. He is certified in CPR, oxygen administration, blood borne pathogens, AED and first aid.

The Bell Gardens resident has served as president of the Tech’s Spanish Club and the National Hispanic Honor Society. He has accumulated nearly 1,800 hours of Christian Service through his extensive volunteerism and impressive dedication to community service.

“Having been raised by my disabled mother, I understand the fact that sometimes some people could use a little bit of help,” he said. “My mom was the one who taught me that the values of other people come before you to (continued on next page)

There are so many different people that walk by me on a daily basis, some of whom are not that friendly or are very reserved. Every person has their own story, and I know that in their hearts and spirits, there is a little bit of Jesus, or they are in need of Him in some way. No matter how I may be treated by them, I always make sure to treat them with the utmost care and respect, the same way I think Jesus would have treated them.”

Currently, Alexis is trying to decide between 19 (and counting) university acceptances, including 13 schools who offered him spots on their lacrosse teams. Godspeed, young man!

Sඉൺඇංඌඁ Cඅඎൻ Vඈඅඎඇඍൾൾඋඌ ൺඍ L.A. Mൺඋൺඍඁඈඇ Prior to state and local stay-at-home measures, members of the Tech's Spanish Club and club moderator Dr. Carolina Schmeisser volunteered at the L.A. Marathon on March 8. Kudos to this great group for their community-focused efforts!

Sൾඇංඈඋ Rൺඒ Gൺඋർංൺ Fൾൺඍඎඋൾൽ ඈඇ KNBC Sඉඈඋඍඌ Nൾඐඌ Did you see him? Tech baseball player and ACE senior Ray Garcia, who signed to play at Menlo College, was featured in the “Saluting the Seniors” segment of KNBC news! The Fred Rogan segment recognized deserving seniors for their athletic accomplishments.

Many thanks to Tech Board of Trustee member Bishop David O’Connell and his loyal support group, the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick, a distinguished Society of Irishmen. Bosco Tech was very blessed to collaborate with them in efforts to raise much-needed tuition assistance for Tech students at their recent St. Patrick’s celebration on March 8. The revelers enjoyed great food, superb entertainment, excellent drinks and terrific auction items. Tech students, including our Ambassadors, served as hosts and displayed projects from each of the school’s technologies.

We are grateful to our new friends, the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick, for their generosity and support of Bosco Tech students.

Aඅඎආඇඎඌ Cൺඋඅඈඌ Iඅඅංඇ඀ඐඈඋඍඁ (MS ‘99) Nൺආൾൽ Pൺඌൺൽൾඇൺ Tඈඎඋඇൺආൾඇඍ ඈൿ Rඈඌൾඌ® Eඑൾർඎඍංඏൾ The Tech family congratulates alumnus Carlos Illingworth (MS '99) who has been named Senior Director of Community Relations for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. Carlos also will serve as Executive Director of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation.

Prior to his appointment, Carlos served as Director of Public Affairs and Communications for The Coca-Cola Company, where he was responsible for government relations, communications and community affairs. In his free time, the Tech Materials Science graduate and married father of three finds time to give back to his community, the City of Whittier, by serving on the Social Services Commission.

Appointed by Whittier’s mayor and city council, Carlos and his four commission colleagues are responsible for assessing the social needs of the community and making recommendations to the council on funding to support nonprofit organizations that serve residents.

“I’m a firm believer in civic engagement—that everyone has a role to play, a role in contributing to society, and I’ve been fortunate to have opportunities to work in this space, both professionally and personally,” said Carlos, who also has spearheaded the boards of the Cal State L.A. Alumni Association, San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership and YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles’ Montebello-Commerce branch.

“Supporting the growth and involvement of those who don’t necessarily see themselves with a seat at the table or anything to offer is especially important and has been particularly gratifying,” he said.

“Communities thrive when the circle of engagement includes different backgrounds and perspectives.”

Of his high school, Carlos said, “From the moment I started thinking about high school, I wanted to go to Bosco Tech and I’m glad I did. The ‘Salesian Way’ of living out your faith through everyday actions and meeting the needs of others was evident in the faculty and staff. Teachers like Antonia Elenes and Dr. Ali Tabatabai believed in my core character, even when I had my lessons learned, which reaffirmed my values and sent me into college with a stronger purpose—one greater than myself.”

Mਁ਋ਉ਎ਇ ਔਈਅ Mਏਓਔ ਏਆ ਔਈਅ Tਉ਍ਅ— Dൺඇ Mඎඋඉඁඒ Fඈඎඇൽൺඍංඈඇ Gඋൺඇඍ Aඅඅඈඐඌ ൿඈඋ Rൾඇඈඏൺඍංඈඇ ඈൿ Fඎඍඎඋൾ BMET Cඅൺඌඌඋඈඈආ Sඉൺർൾ While Bosco Tech students and teachers are under state and local mandate to practice distance learning, important campus renovations are underway. In Phase I of the Biological, Medical & Environmental Technology (BMET) expansion, contractors are hard at work converting the former Materials Science outside lecture hall into the main classroom for the Tech’s newest technology. Funding for these interior upgrades was made possible through a generous grant from of the Dan Murphy Foundation Phase II of the renovation will see the former outside Electronics and Graphic Communications lecture halls converted into two laboratories to support the studies of BMET students. We anticipate this phase to begin in late 2020 and early 2021, as additional funding is secured. Phase III will include a major renovation and face lift to the exterior of these buildings that are located along Tech Corridor.
