BOSCO TECH’S ARCHDIOCESE CHRISTIAN SERVICE AWARD WINNERS On March 20, two members of the Bosco Tech community were awarded the Christian Service Medal by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Senior Grayson Wade (ACE) and Mr. Jeff Krynen, Assistant Principal of Curriculum & Instruction, were recognized for their exemplary service to the school and to their community.

Grayson, who is an honor student, annually organizes a massive, community-wide drive to gather gift-filled shoeboxes for the Samaritan’s Purse global Operation Christmas Child efforts. To date, he has been instrumental in contributing more than 3,700 fully-stocked boxes and raising more than $38,000 in shipping costs since he began his efforts eight years ago.

Additionally, he has served as president of Bosco Tech’s National Honor Society chapter, is a Bosco Tech Ambassador, and has earned the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout ranking. This certified lifeguard has taught swim lessons to children and has participated in and raised funds for USC’s Swim with Mike Fundraiser that provides scholarships for physically challenged athletes. Wade recently was honored by the Duarte Elks Lodge #1427 with its Most Valuable Student Scholarship and with the President’s Volunteer Service Award, granted by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. The award recognizes Americans who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their community and their country.

For 28 years, Mr. Krynen has provided dedicated instruction and service to young people as both an instructor and, more recently, as an administrator at the Tech, his own alma mater. He has served as department chair for both the school’s science and Architecture & Construction Engineering (ACE) departments, and worked as Dean of Technology Education, before assuming the role of Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction. Mr. Krynen also serves on the school’s Board of Trustees. As a long-time Key Club moderator during the club’s formative years, he worked alongside student leaders to establish a lasting organization known throughout the community for its tireless service and dedication. During a recent and unforeseen staffing shortage in the ACE technology program, and in addition to his administrative duties, Mr. Krynen has stepped in to teach and serve as chairman of the department.

The 2018 Archdiocese of Los Angeles Christian Service Awards were presented at a special Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The students honored represented each of the 51 Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese, while Bosco Tech was one of only seven schools with an adult honoree.

2018 JUNIOR RETREAT —BY ASSISTANT CAMPUS MINISTER BRAD STOLZ

On the beautiful sunny day of Tuesday, March 6, our junior class of 97 students enthusiastically participated in their annual retreat. That morning, the Retreat and Youth Ministry Director Mr. H (Herrera) welcomed them with a prayer and introductory talk at the Tech’s Fr. Penna Chapel. They then walked over to the solitude of St. Joseph’s Retreat Center where they met Salesian Candidates Kris Tran and Reegan Ledet who, together with student retreat facilitators senior Richard Meza, junior Jose Ulloa, and sophomores Jesus Lujan and Alexis Mendoza, helped our juniors get to know each other better through a series of ice breakers. Afterwards, with everyone relaxed and friendly, the heart of the retreat began.

The theme of the retreat was “leadership,” and was divided into three rotating sections. One section was led by athletic director and instructor Coach Branden Jones who used his own life as an example of how students need to become individual leaders in their own lives at home. Another section was led by Mr. H. who instructed the juniors about how they must soon take on the burden and responsibility of being the next school leaders.

Salesian Candidate Reegan led the third section which was devoted to the retreat participants taking the lead in renewing their own friendship with God through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This topic was especially appropriate during this Lenten season. During Reegan’s presentation, Salesian priests Fr. Harold, Fr. Steve, and Fr. Trinh facilitated the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

There was, of course, recreation time before lunch, which was a great chicken meal at the Tech cafeteria. This free time enabled the juniors to cement their new and old friendships even more.

The day concluded with a special Mass and inspirational homily by our own ever present inspiration, Fr. Harold. The juniors went home from this memorable day with a new understanding of and, hopefully. desire for awakening leadership in their own lives.

ALUMNUS SPOTLIGHT JASON SHARKEY (MS ‘07) —MAKING NEXT-GENERATION BIOMEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS Surrounded by cutting-edge technology in an incubator lab, Tech alumnus Jason Sharkey (MS ’07) spends his days elbow deep in experiments, working shoulder-to-shoulder with likeminded pioneers seeking biomedical advancements. Jason is an engineer and production manager for Platinum Group Coatings, LLC, a biotech company that provides solutions for those interested in developing next-generation microelectronics.

PGC is based in the non-profit Pasadena Biotech Collaborative, an incubator founded in 2004 to support the growing number of life science start-ups in the Los Angeles area. Jason is creating and testing prototype brain implants with low electrical resistance, a breakthrough that could be used in devices to treat everything from back pain to Parkinson’s disease.

The collaborative hosts 22 companies and provides a shared-use wet lab facility for scientists seeking to maintain the benefits of working independently, including maintaining full ownership of intellectual property, membership in the Southern California Biomedical Council, and access to scientific, technical, legal, financial and business advisors.

Jason has focused his career on bring innovative technologies to market. After studying at Pasadena City College, he transferred to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. He worked in industry as a chemical process engineer and a medical device software validation engineer before venturing into the realm of startups. He continues to grow his skills and actively seeks opportunities to mentor the next generation of innovators. He recently was a speaker at Tech’s Engineering day event where he shared career advice with young Techmen.

“I am very fortunate to have been a student at Bosco Tech,” he said. “The technology classes, the guidance from the staff, and the brotherhood were very formative for me. I remain inspired by my instructors. Teachers like Mr. Curiel, Mr. Godinez, and Mr. Gaba taught me how to think critically. Instructors like Coach Plantillas, Mr. Herrera, and Mr. Stoltz, taught me how to be a good man. I have been to many schools since and I can say with some assurance that the intellectual and spiritual mentorship available at Bosco Tech is unique and valuable. We face a lot of challenges in our world today, both spiritual and technical. I have a lot of hope in the future knowing that a new generation of Techmen will be there to work on them. “ Jason lives in East Los Angeles with his wife of three years. We are very excited to follow Jason and PGC’s work and discover more about the medical advancements that may become achievable through their innovation. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION—2018 GRADUATION VIDEO A DVD of the Class of 2018’s graduation ceremony, including scenes taken before and after the ceremony, will soon be available. The DVD will include highlights of the senior awards ceremony and luncheon, the senior class barbeque, and the baccalaureate Mass, as well as the complete conferral of diplomas.

This is an opportunity to have a record of your son at this important milestone and for him to have a visual reminder of the many friends that have played an important part in his life over the last four years.

On June 8, as a special bonus to those who purchase the video before graduation day, parents who are interested will be invited to videotape a brief message to their son to be included in the video. Before the Baccalaureate Mass, there will be two cameramen with microphones in front of the 600 classroom building. See them if you wish to tape your congratulations to your son and the entire class of 2018.

BOSCO TECH STUDENTS SHOW OFF PROJECTS AT THE L.A. COUNTY SCIENCE FAIR On March 24, three teams of students presented their projects at the Los Angeles County Office of Education's Science and Engineering Fair. The huge event took place at the Pasadena Convention Center and was open to students from all over the County. Freshmen Jericoh Santiago, Joseph Perez, and Nathan Chao presented their project, "Effects of Electricity on Plant Growth," as part of the Plant Ecology category, while juniors Michael Garcia and Joshua Maros presented their project on the effects of air pressure on ionized plasma as part of the Physics category. Josh and Michael’s project earned Honorable Mention in its category.

The competition was tough, but one team managed to win a special prize at the fair.

Sophomores Lorenzo Pedroza and Gregory Saunders won the Stockholm Junior Water prize for their project, "Water Hardness In The San Gabriel River."

The faculty and staff at the Tech are so proud of all the hard work our boys put into presenting these projects and hope to send more great science fair projects next year!

SAT EXAM SCHEDULING Attention parents of juniors: Please remind your son of the importance of taking the SAT tests that are coming up in May and June. Students tend to score the best during those months because they are in test mode, many having just completed Advanced Placement exams. They also approach the SAT at this time with a full year of fresh coursework under their belt. This can be especially beneficial in subjects like mathematics.

Of course, the SAT can be taken more than once, but this is just a reminder of the approaching test dates to help your son score at his highest possible level. Test fee waivers are available for families who qualify. Please contact Mr. Ray Chavez at rchavez@boscotech.edu for more information.

TECH ALUMNUS IS NEW MAGNUM, P.I. Congratulations to Techman Javier Manuel (Jay) Hernandez Jr. who has just been cast as the lead in CBS' reboot of the classic hit show, “Magnum, P.I.” Jay attended Bosco Tech in the early 1990s and was a student in Construction Technology. You may recognize the Montebello native who played Jessie Harkness in “Bad Moms” and El Diablo in “Suicide Squad.”

We are cheering Jay on in his success and will be watching his new show!

17 MINUTES OF PRAYER AND REMEMBERANCE On March 14, many of our students showed their solidarity with their peers across the nation as they peacefully and prayerfully congregated on the school’s mall.

Seventeen flags placed in a circle represented the 17 lives of students and teachers lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month. Everyone was engaged the entire time in prayer and contemplation.

At the end of the 17 minutes, a P.A. tone sounded and students, on their own, returned to class. The faculty and staff of Bosco Tech are immensely proud of our students.

CELEBRATING PI DAY, BOSCO TECH STYLE 201! That's how many digits of pi a young Techman can recite. Congratulations to senior Yehya Nasser who earned both a pumpkin and an apple pie in instructor Mr. Erick William's annual Pi Day competition when he recited more digits than any other participant AND called out the first 50 in less than 10 seconds--a tie with freshman Anthony Montes.

Anthony took home a delicious peach pie for his quick-thinking efforts. Great job, gentlemen!

YOUTH DAY—DARE TO BELIEVE —BY JUNIOR MARCOS CHAVEZ, BOSCO TECH YOUTH MINISTRY CORE TEAMMEMBER

Youth Day, a day where youth from around the Archdiocese of L.A. and beyond, come together to learn and celebrate our Catholic faith. Teens were able to listen to guest speakers who talked about things relating to us and things that may come close to home. Roy Petitfils, one of our two speakers, spoke about current statistics that describe families now living in the United States. Petitfil, a clinical psychologist, also helped the teens understand how to deal with certain situations possibly happening in their homes.

The second speaker, Mike Patin, talked about how to “ACE” (ask, care, example) their Catholic faith. Teens should feel free to ask questions about the religion in order to understand what they believe. Second, they have to care for those who are still struggling to understand our faith.

Finally, teens should set an example so others can understand.

After the speakers, students enjoyed a delcious lunch then ended the day with a big liturgy in the arena with Archbishop Jose Gomez. During the liturgy and keynote address, the teens learned more about the theme for Youth Day, “Dare to Believe.” Everyone there could feel the joy of the teens being together celebrating Youth Day. About 40 Bosco Tech students attended Youth Day, among approximately 12,000 total attendees. Special thanks to: Youth Ministry Director Rudy Herrera, and chaperones Reegan Ledet, Brother James Nguyen, & Brad Stolz.

THANK YOU, LOWE’S AND SKILLS USA FOR ACE’S NEW SAFETY SAWS Bosco Tech's friends from SkillsUSA recently visited the campus to see Architecture & Construction Engineering's (ACE) equipment purchased with their generous donation. The SkillsUSA grant provided three professional table saws and peripheral equipment used in the project-based, pre-engineering curriculum. ACE seniors who completed internships in the construction industry this past summer (in photo on right) were on hand to thank our guests in person.

CELEBRATING LUNAR NEW YEAR —BY SOPHOMORES ALLEN RUNZE DAI AND PETER HAN YO SONG

The International Program celebrated Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dog. To our international, boys it means they can be cleansed of the problems of the previous year and can have a totally new life in the coming year. It means they can stay together with their family in love, peace, and happiness.

When we walked in and saw the room decorated in red with Chinese decorations, we were surprised and amazed. “I never thought we would have a celebration to celebrate the new year in another country,” said sophomore Peter Han Yu Song. “As we sat with all of the Chinese and other international students here, I felt like we were home. The food was homemade by Ms. Jean Tang, a guardian of two of our students. It tasted like our food from home, Special guests of the students are lunch were Ms. Pearl China. Bosco Tech, in building a partnership with the Rosemead Chamber of Commerce, was invited by Chamber CEO Ray Jan, to participate in the conclusion of the Chamber’s Chinese New Year celebration.

Mr. Jimenez sponsored a table inviting Mr. Michael Seymour, Mrs. Catherine Diaz, and several juniors and seniors in the program, Joe Li (12), Gavin Yam (12), Forest Yang (12), Shuhao Lu (11), and George Ouyang (11), our excellent International students to attend. Special guests were host parent of senior Joe Yuzhong Li, Mrs. Zamorano, and host parent of junior Junsai Zhang, Mr. Mike Wang. It was an exciting celebration.

Seeing the excitement in their faces, and hearing them speak to each other in Mandarin was so heartfelt to witness. They translated all that was said. What an experience for them; it was home away from home!

Bosco Tech looks forward to continuing to work with the Rosemead Chamber of Commerce members in order to to build a partnership where our boys can participate in and contribute to the community.

BOSCO TECH MUSIC NEWS —BY BAND BOOSTER MR. JUN REYES

St. Peter’s Italian Church The DBTI Royal Tech Marching Band performed at the St. Peter’s Italian Church on March 11, 2018. The band is often invited to provide music as the congregation walk in a celebratory procession around the block.

Annual Heritage Festival The DBTI Symphonic Band continues to prepare for the Annual Heritage Festival.

The festival will be held this year in Chicago, IL from April 11 to April 15.

Thanks to all that have made this trip possible. We appreciate your continued support.

Jazz Night Out The Jazz Band is also preparing for their Annual Jazz Night Out performance to be held on Friday, May 18.

This year’s theme is “Totally Awesome 80s.” Please join us for a fun-filled night of entertainment as the Jazz Band performs your favorite 80s tunes. Dinner will be catered by Lascari’s Italian Restaurant and will be served in Tech Hall.

Booster Spotlight The DBTI Music Program owes a lot of its success to band director Mr. Daniel Almanza and the Music Boosters. Together they take on a multitude of responsibilities that keep our Music Program dynamic and our boys motivated and engaged. SPORTS UPDATE—TRACK AND FIELD —BY ASSISTANT TRACK & FIELD COACH BRAD STOLZ

The first week of season competition saw the Bosco Tech Track and Field team attend three meets. Our season opener was the St. Paul Classic Invitational meet on March 7. We did well in the 400 meter varsity races; senior Aaron Gonzalez and freshman Jun Jeong both came in second in their heats, while senior Sidney Herrera won his heat and was fifth out of 36 runners from 18 schools. Our two relay teams both had good season openers: the JV team of freshmen Aidan Gomez, Kenneth Lopez, Adrian Lope, and Sergio Hinojos in the 4 x 100 frosh/soph race had a time of 53.9, and the varsity runners freshman Jun Jeong, sophomore Ryan Suarez, junior Forest Yeung, and senior Sidney Herrera had a fast 47.99 for the quarter mile. Field events saw freshman Aaron Reyes finish third in his flight for a new personal record (PR) of 57 feet ,7 inches, and sophomore Gabriel Gonzalez in the frosh/soph discus finished fifth with a throw of 29 feet, 5 inches.

Our first league meet was against St. Monica at our home field at St. Paul’s. We defeated our opponents with a very decisive final score of 95 to 10. This very one-sided score was the result of many outstanding performances by our team members. Just about all of the following team members finished in the top ten in our league (PR indicates a new personal record) in the sprints for 100 meters Jun Jeong, Kenneth Lopez (PR), and Ryan Suarez (PR); 200 meters Ryan Suarez and Sidney Herrera who won his race and is #1 in the league; 400 meters Jun Jeong, Aaron Gonzalez, and Sidney Herrera (PR) #2 in league. Our distance runners likewise did well: 800 meters senior Anthony Caballes (PR) and sophomore Joey Rivas (#5 in league); 1600 meters JV, junior Vincent Maldonado and sophomore Ryan Cayer who won his race and is #1 in league, for varsity Joey Rivas is #3 in league; 3200 meters JV Ryan Cayer #3 in league; varsity Anthony Caballes (PR) and Joey Rivas #3 in league.

110 hurdles senior Andres Moran (PR); 300 hurdles junior Alvaro Chavez (PR). In the 4X100 meter relay all four members PRed; Aidan Comez, Ryan Suarez, Jun Jeong, and Sidney Herrera. On the field, our discus throwers freshman Vincent Everett, sophomore Gabriel Gonzalez, and senior Isaiah Rojas all established new PRs. At the Walnut High School Invitational on St. Patrick’s Day, all the following athletes had the luck of the Irish in acquiring a new PR: for 200 m Kenneth Lopez and Aidan Gomez; 400 m freshman Joshua Bernal; 3200 m Ryan Cayer, and finally on the field, for shot put Aaron Reyes, Vincent Everett, and Gabriel Gonzalez.

This was a pretty exhausting first eight days of season, but we are very happy with the results of our efforts. We believe this is the foreshadowing of greater successes to come!

Our remaining league schedule is entirely at St. Paul HS starting at 3:00 pm if you’d like to come and support us: April 11 vs St. Anthony; April 18 vs St. Paul; April 25 league prelims; May 2 league finals.

MARCH MADNESS: IMPORTANT REMINDER TO SENIORS The month of March is traditionally the month that many universities and colleges notify students of their application status, whether it is an acceptance, denial or waitlist. For this reason, it is important for seniors to immediately review all emails and correspondence they receive from college institutions. Seniors should particularly pay attention to notices that require additional information such as updated transcripts or family financial data.
