From the Chairman Dear friends and fellow supporters of Bosco Tech, With so many positive things happening on campus and so many accomplishments being made by our students, we knew that now was the time to issue an annual report. What better way to highlight achievement and thank those who made it all possible? Such positive strides never happen in a vacuum. We are very grateful to each of you who has contributed in some way to the success of our students. We, and they, fully appreciate that it is only because of your support that Bosco Tech continues to provide the nurturing environment in which these young men thrive. As most of you know, our Salesian educational philosophy is established on four abiding pillars. We are and always have been a nurturing environment that serves as · home--a place that is welcoming and makes each one feel they belong · school--what can be learned here and what valuable lessons are imparted · church—the constant integration of prayer, inspiration, faith, service in all we do · playground—that which makes this place fun, interesting and engaging This time-honored and effective educational precept is still effective and impactful to young lives today. And it continues to direct Bosco Tech’s mission and drive all that we do. While teaching styles and approaches may vary, the many faces of the Tech reflect the same love of young people and the same desire to uphold timeless constructs that have been proven to positively impact lives. The Board of Trustees, along with our dedicated faculty and staff, is committed to ensuring the school’s long-term growth and sustainability because we wholeheartedly believe in the value of a Salesian education and its effectiveness, as is evident both on the Tech campus every day and in the lives of our many alumni. As you read about a year well spent, you will see how our fine young men are being prepared and how the support of our generous benefactors is vital in making it all possible. From the Vice President It was September, 1978, and as I stepped onto the campus, I knew that things were going to be different. Now in high school, I began to understand why my older cousins liked this place so much, why they felt at home and why they talked about it when our families would get together... Forward a few years and I am again at my alma mater. This time, I am charged with helping maintain that environment that engages students and keeps them challenged. On behalf of our teachers and staff, let me say that we are very proud of Bosco Tech and the young people whose lives have been enriched over the past 63 years. Not content to rest on what has been accomplished in our storied history, we are continually seeking new ways to better prepare young men to reach their educational and professional goals while developing the whole person—the person of integrity who is a responsible contributor to his community and who, being mindful of his many blessings, cultivates a servant’s heart in helping others. Over the course of Bosco Tech’s history, a “roadmap” has been developed to ensure our graduates are more than prepared for the ever-changing world they will face. We’ve set before ourselves ambitious goals and continue to make significant progress toward achieving them--goals like becoming the premier engineering and applied science high school in California. Our roadmap is reviewed regularly to ensure progress, confirm relevance of targets, and guarantee that new challenges are continually identified and addressed as we work toward making Bosco Tech the school of choice for young men residing in Southern California. Not surprisingly, such goals require carefully planned technology and equipment updating and structural renovation and expansion—this is vital to our ability to prepare students for the demands they will face down the road. And, while cultivating an environment conducive to a 21st century education, we uphold the longstanding objective that no student who desires a Salesian education is turned away for financial reasons. The onus of this responsibility means that we continually seek funding sources and charitable support to carry out the mission of St. John Bosco. The power of our organization comes from the many dedicated and generous people—faculty, administrators, parents, students, volunteers, and loyal donors--who share our goals, support our efforts, and live out our mission every day. We ask that you continue to prayerfully help us uphold this work and support the Tech in any way you can. A Bosco Tech graduate shows knowledge of the Scriptures, doctrines, and practices of the Catholic Church, with an understanding of the role that prayer plays in a life of faith. He is able to make moral decisions based on a well-formed conscience and is committed to the service of others in the Salesian spirit of loving kindness.

Four Pillars of Salesian Education at Work in 2017-2018

“Without confidence and love, there can be no true education. If you want to be loved…you must love yourselves, and make your children feel that you love them.” – St. John Bosco

For each student, the Bosco Tech community strives to be a nurturing environment that serves as

a home a school a church a playground Students thrive in a learning atmosphere where they feel accepted and loved while being challenged to become wellrounded, responsible individuals responding to God’s call in each of their lives.

Home 80+ alumni formed a reception line during graduation to welcome each new graduate

The class of 2021 was presented with their official Bosco Tech ties at a celebratory Mass.

Japanese language students practiced their skills while welcoming their counterparts from two high schools in Japan. In the presence of alumni veterans, the iconic flagpole was dedicated to those who have served in our armed forces.

Alumni were out in full force for Engineers Day hosting break-out informational sessions covering career pathways and college studies.

Understanding the value of parent perspective and input, the Board of Trustees welcomed Parent Council Member Shannon McConnell to the leadership roster.

Very special guests were honored at the Black & Gold Gala, alumnus Lieutenant General (Retired) John E. Rhodes (MA â€™62); the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, employer of many Tech alumni; long-time faculty members Paul Stroup and Brother John Rasor, SDB (ME â€™62); and Bosco Tech trustee Monsignor John Moretta,

Once again, our graduating class had a 100% four-year college acceptance rate.

Graduating senior Herson Cruz was named a Harvard Prize Book Winner.

Tech students were invited into the National Hispanic Recognition Program after impressively scoring in the PSAT/NMSQT’s top 2.5%.

Approximately 70% of the student body made the honor roll in Fall and Spring semesters for their excellent academic performance. Average cumulative grade point average for the academic year was 3.261.

School History instructor Erick Williams was selected by the College Board to serve as an Advanced Placement exam reader.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has hired more alumni from Bosco Tech than from any other high school in the country.

More than 25 interns spent the summer working at STEM-based companies throughout the Los Angeles area at places like The Boeing Company and KCS West.

In keeping with Bosco Tech’s history of inclusive and successful AP classes, the number of students taking AP exams has increased by 22% in the past four years. In 2018, 62% of our juniors and seniors— the only classes who take AP classes at the Tech—took at least one AP exam, and earned a pass rate of 72%, compared to a global pass rate of 61.3%.

Several Tech students were invited to present their science projects at the Los Angeles County Office of Education’s Science & Engineering Fair.

Church In a philanthropic drive directed completely by students, the campus community raised $2,500 for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

Lead by a graduating senior, the Tech community filled 876 shoeboxes for the the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child international drive

Lead by Bishop David G. O’Connell, a Tech trustee, the Tech family dedicated to the Lord new technology labs, and the good work students will accomplish in them.

Bosco Tech’s international students, along with the school’s Bingo program patrons, obtained and delivered specially-asked-for toys to every student at a local elementary school in a largely underserved area.

Two members of the Tech community, senior Grayson Wade and Assistant Principal Jeff Krynen, were honored at the Los Angeles Archdiocese Christian Service Awards Mass.

Tech alumnus and current parent Eric Tscharanyan was awarded the 2017 Veterans Service Award for the California 22nd Senate District. Eric was recognized by Senator Ed Hernandez, O.D. for his valor and service to his country and community.

The Tech community celebrated Brother Bruno De Pretto’s seventieth anniversary as a Salesian. Brother Bruno has been at the Tech since the 1970s.

Graduating senior Grayson Wade was one of only four campus leaders nationwide to participate in a Samaritan’s Purse: Operation Christmas Child Student Vision Trip in the Philippines.

The class of ‘18 completed Christian Service hours far beyond the 100 required; several completed more than 600 and one served 1,812, hours in leadership roles in the Big Brother program, liturgy and retreat planning, and character assemblies, in addition to his work in the surrounding community.

Twelve band members were named to the 2018 CSULA High School Honor Band, seven attended the California Leadership Academy, four completed the System Blue Leadership Camp and drum major and National Merit Scholar Daniel Hosseini was awarded a spot in the 2018 Pasadena City College Honor Band, the official Tournament of Roses marching band.

Instructors and parent chaperones took interested students on international trips to Japan and Eastern Europe, introducing the students firsthand to culture, art, and history.

Graduating senior Roman Hernandez was unanimously voted First Team All South Catholic League and South Catholic League Defensive Player of the Year, determined by league coaches. He also was selected as a member of All CIF Southern Section team.

The Techâ€™s wind ensemble won the Silver award in the 2018 WorldStrides Heritage Festival in Chicago.

Playground The FRC Robotics team qualified to compete in the quarter finals in the Ventura Regional robotics competition. Tech team member Aaron Sarmiento was selected to sing the national anthem at the start of the competition.

A long-standing tradition, the Salesian Spirit Games, had students again competing with their technology in sports activities simultaneously across the campus following the Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebratory Mass. MSET took home the first place trophy. ACE won first place for overall spirit.

The e-NABLE Club was formed by students to create prosthetic limbs via 3D rapid prototype printing.

There are many ways to give to Bosco Tech: Charitable Remainder Trusts: a charitable remainder trust can benefit you now by providing a lifetime income that is tax advantaged, save you income taxes now, reduce your estate tax later and benefit Bosco Tech. Contingent Beneficiaries: Naming Bosco Tech as a contingent beneficiary can benefit the Tech when the unexpected happens, but without loss if the normal course of events takes place. Contingent beneficiaries can be used in wills, life insurance and annuity contracts, pension accounts, IRAs, and 401(k)s. Stock Gifts: If you give an asset with a long-term capital gain, you never have to pay the capital gains taxes, but get the same amount of tax deduction as if you gave a cash donation. This can be a huge tax savings for you, and still provide the Tech with all the intended benefits. Please note that the asset must qualify for long-term capital gains treatment and have a ‘gain’ to benefit.

An Effective Communicator

A Bosco Tech graduate presents information and expresses ideas clearly, effectively, and persuasively through speaking, writing and the use of a variety of presentation technologies.

Gift Matching Programs: A long-time strategy for helping the Tech is to use an employer matching gift plan for your donation. In these plans, your employer will make a donation alongside yours to the Tech, which can double your gift. Furthermore, your spouse may be eligible for a matching plan on the same gift, turning it into a triple benefit. Life Insurance: Some people use life insurance as a way of multiplying their gift. For a small amount (the insurance premium), they can leave a large amount (the death benefit) to the Tech. If you don’t have dependents, don’t forget the insurance provided by your employer; consider naming Bosco Tech as your beneficiary. Pensions, IRAs, 401(k)s and annuities: When paid out at death, these accounts may be taxed in excess of 75%, after you add up federal and state income taxes, state death taxes and federal estate taxes. If you name the Tech as your beneficiary, you sidestep all these taxes. If you’re married, you probably want to name your spouse as the primary beneficiary, but consider naming Bosco Tech as your contingent beneficiary. Stock Options: If exercised after your death, stock options will generate income taxes and may generate state taxes. However, if you name the Tech as beneficiary of your employer-provided stock options, both taxes will be eliminated.
