Far more vast in range of color than its most renowned blue cousin, fancy sapphires are part of the Corundum mineral family. Fancy colored sapphires exist in pink, green, yellow, orange and purple. Sapphires that are not blue, black or colorless are referred to as fancy sapphires. Some sapphires may be considered ‘parti-colored’ or ‘color changing’ by displaying combinations of different colors.

PARAÍBA TOURMALINE

Copper bearing tourmaline, more often recognized by the name Paraíba, is technically named cuprian elbaite tourmaline. As a trace element, copper is responsible for the intense neon blue hues that make Paraíba and Paraíba-type tourmalines so desirable. A stone is considered a Paraíba tourmaline if mined in the specific region in Paraíba, Brazil where the stone was first discovered in the 1980’s. The allure of this magnificent stone from the moment of its discovery saw demand far surpass supply. Thanks to more recent discoveries of deposits in Nigeria and Mozambique supply has increased for this unique stone, but fine material over a carat remains extremely rare.

TOURMALINE

Tourmaline is a gemstone that comes in a seemingly endless variety of shades and colors; in fact it can occur in almost every hue. Reportedly first discovered in the 1500s by Spanish explorers in Brazil but mistaken for emerald; it took until the 1800s for scientists to distinguish it as the green variety of tourmaline. Its name even reflects this confusion, derived from the Sinhalese word ‘turmali’, which means ‘mixed.’ For centuries tourmalines have adorned the jewels of royalty and continue to inspire today.

ALEXANDRITE

Alexandrite is one of the most unique and rare gemstones ever discovered. It is a phenomenal variety of the mineral chrysoberyl that naturally color changes from bluishgreen in daylight to purplish-red in incandescent light.

First discovered in 1830 in Czarist Russia in the Ural Mountains. Since the imperial colors of Russia were red and green, the newly discovered stone was named after Czar Alexander II, then heir to the throne. In 1987 a new deposit of alexandrite was found in Hematita, Brazil.

Although there are other areas where alexandrite has been discovered, Brazil is considered the finest source for alexandrite since the 19th century. The most important quality factor when determining the value of an alexandrite is its color change, caused by the complex way this mineral absorbs light.

Rarely occurring naturally, many ancients did not have a word for “blue.” But in this striking platinum design, two natural blue gemstones are combined for an electric effect. The garnet family of gemstones is scientifically classified as a “group,” meaning that although the gems share the same atomic or crystal structure, they differ in their chemical makeup. A member of the feldspar group, moonstone is known for its distinct sheen under certain lighting conditions called adularescence. Its name is owed to this phenomenon. As its sheen flutters through the heart of the gemstone, it resembles the heavenly glow of moonlight.

Moonstones display a remarkable phenomena: adularescence. It sometimes is referred to as ‘schiller’ and appears as a billowing luster or glow that seems to originate beneath the surface of the stone. The highly prized Australian opal is one of nature’s true works of art. Recognized as the premiere source, the Lightning Ridge area of New South Wales produces a very finite supply of this phenomenal stone and no two opals are exactly alike.
