As I reflect on our business over the past 150 years, I am reminded of so many special moments we’ve had the privilege of sharing with our customers. When you invite us to be a part of those moments, you’re giving us the gift of a lifetime. Thank you for that.

This is a humbling time in the life of our company. And for me, after a start in Borsheims’ gift gallery, the humility and gratitude are real. Louis Borsheim founded our company in 1870. We grew to become a downtown Omaha destination by 1947, when the business passed to Louis Friedman and his son, Ike, whose philosophy of buying in volume, paying in cash, and passing the savings to our customers still guides us today. In 1989, we became part of Warren Buffett’s famous holding company, Berkshire Hathaway, which sparked exponential growth and global notoriety.

Ike's philosophy 1947 was a pivotal moment in Borsheims history. Founders John and Alfred Borsheim sold the business to Louis Friedman and his son, Ike. The Friedmans kept the Borsheims name but brought in a big shift in philosophy for our store. Ike believed in buying in volume and paying in cash. That practice allowed him to pass big savings on to Borsheims customers. Those savings became one of Borsheims' biggest selling points – our Borsheims price!

When Warren walked in Thanks to the Friedman family’s philosophy, Borsheims soon got too big for our 8,000 square foot downtown location. In 1986, Borsheims moved to the new Regency Court shopping center, tripling the size of the store.

Just a few years later, the world’s biggest investor and longtime Borsheims customer Warren Buffett purchased Borsheims with a handshake from Ike Friedman. Borsheims officially became part of the Berkshire Hathaway family in 1989, giving our store global exposure and exponential growth.
