Wilkins School Community Center is Open in September!
WSCC Dance Center

When entering the Wilkins School Community Center, you are greeted at the dance door with a smile by Kim Curtin. Kim has been the Director/Instructor of the dance program for the past twenty-six years. Along with Bernadette Smith, the two of them provide a place where people can come to learn the art of dance in a welcoming environment where everyone fits in and can feel good about themselves. The studio is a recreational dance program offering Ballet, Jazz, and Tap to children and adults of all ages, abilities and experience. Kim began dancing at the age of five for the Rosalene Kenneth Dance School and continued taking classes throughout her life. She loved the feeling she had in the classroom. It was her happy place that she could go to and just let the music take her away. Kim has recreated that experience with her students. She states what a beautiful experience it is to teach your past students and now their children. The goal of the studio is to learn the art of dance, promote self-esteem and mostly have fun doing it. Classes begin the week of September 13th 2021! If you are interested in joining our dance family, please call Kim at (412) 829-5467 or email her at kimberlyanncurtin@gmail.com.
Music and Scrolling Panorama from Pittsburgh to Java
Once again, it’s Crankie Time at the WSCC! The WSCC is so proud to offer this show featuring Pittsburgh-based artist Katy Dement and a (mostly) Richmond-based performance group called Rumput. Both artists will be sharing a style of scrolling panorama artwork called crankies. One of Katy’s pieces will be a recent collaboration with poet, Alex Ward. Rumput performs innovative string band music along with crankies and shadow theater. The group will be premiering two new commissioned works from scrolling panorama artist Dani Iswardana and musician Danis Sugiyanto, both of whom are from Java. Rumput has learned from and collaborated with Danis Sugiyanto and a number of other Javanese musicians for many years. At present, Java and the rest of Indonesia have reported record high deaths from covid-19. Many musicians who made a living from street performing are in critical circumstances both physically and financially. In light of this, 100% of proceeds for this evening will go to musicians in Java. No entrance fee, we welcome free willing donations for the artists and performers.

New Business Spotlight
2033 Noble Street https://www.still-mill.com/ Facebook.com/StillMillDistillery Residents of Swissvale might have noticed a new store front on Noble Street in recent months. With a grand opening that took place on July 14th, the Still Mill is finally open! The owners, Joshua Miller and his wife Kathy Firestine, have serious plans for their commercial space in Swissvale. For now, they have started with the Still Mill, Swissvale’s very first distillery! At the time of this publication the Still Mill is a side business for Joshua and Kathy, who work full time in their positions as a Data Scientist and a Lawyer/Therapist respectively. Joshua has always enjoyed local craft beverages and enjoyed the idea of starting his own distillery. The goal was not just to open a place to make their alcohol but to create a relaxing space for people to enjoy themselves. The resulting tasting room is just that, space for residents and visitors alike to relax and try something new. For now, the distillery offers 3 spirits: vodka, gin, and moonshine. They also make all of their own tinctures, tonics, and syrups for their signature craft cocktails. They offer small food options and Bloody Mary’s on Saturday morning during the farmers market. The tasting room hours are currently limited to Thursdays and Fridays from 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm and Saturdays from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. As a micro-distillery, everything is brewed on site so the product is currently limited to small quantities. Future plans include expanding on the available commercial space in their property at 2033 Noble Street to offer Behavioral Health Counseling and a Wellness Center. Joshua and Kathy are very ambitious and they plan to be in Swissvale for the long haul.
Swissvale Economic Development Corporation
As presented in the last edition of the SWISSVALIAN, SEDCO has a mini-grant opportunity for all Swissvale home and business owners. Residents who undertake permanent exterior home improvement projects that boost the curb appeal of Swissvale homes or businesses may be eligible for a maximum payout of $150 toward those improvements. As of the end of July, SEDCO is pleased to have had eleven Swissvale residents apply for this mini-grant, with the majority of the applications being accepted. Improvements to Swissvale homes included such things as new windows, porch repair, new railings and stairs, replaced fences, replaced porch columns, and new gutters and downspouts. It is not too late to apply. You will find the entire application at www.swissvaleborough.com/about/ sedco.aspx . Submit all information to swissvaleSEDCO@gmail.com or drop off the information at 7234 McClure Avenue by the 15th of the month. Your application will be reviewed at that month’s SEDCO meeting. Meetings are held the 4th Monday of each month and applicants will be notified regarding the status of the grant application within a few weeks. Photos and permission to use those photos to promote this program are required for this grant.

Coming inbound off the Parkway East, you can’t help but notice the beautiful garden directly in front of you as you enter Swissvale. The Swissvale Economic Development Corporation, (SEDCO) was extremely pleased to be one of this year’s sponsors for this Parkway Flower Garden, sponsored through the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. As in past years, Mayor Deneen Swartzwelder took on the responsibility of organizing this planting held on May 8th. Deneen, numerous members of her family, along with SEDCO members and members of the Joe and Marilyn Sepsey family, who also sponsored the garden, worked throughout the morning to plant and mulch the hundreds of flowers that make up this beautiful garden.
