Flock cameras remain a hot topic in the Murfreesboro area, and around the country. This network of license plate readers now tracks and records vehicles’ movement, and it seems the vast majority of the public do not want them.

The local government certainly does, though.

“Oh, but it makes the police’s job easier,” they say.

That’s stupid. The police’s job is to protect my constitutional rights. Law enforcement officers literally take an oath of office to uphold the Constitution. Their job, by definition and oath, is to protect the people they serve from unreasonable searches—not subject them to unreasonable searches. If they are party to helping implement a network to spy on everyone, if they subject anyone to an unreasonable search, investigation, seizure or surveillance without a warrant or probable cause, it’s not simply poor job performance, it’s a violation of the Constitution, a dishonorable breach of their oath. Certainly, they have all read the Constitution and take it seriously.

Meanwhile, in China, robots are breaking human athletics records—sometimes catching fire or crashing spectacularly while they attempt it. Interesting times, indeed.

If you do not want to live in a growing city, unfortunately Murfreesboro may not be the place for you. The businesses keep coming to town, the people keep coming. Soon Buc-ee will be here!

Goodbye Dolly. As great of a songwriter and entertainer as Dolly Parton was, it’s remarkable how few lead their tributes to her with that. They say what a generous person she was, what a great boss, friend, family member, Tennessean and human she was.

The Mayo house is filled with books from the Imagination Library, Dolly reminds me to pour myself a cup of ambition, I thoroughly enjoyed the Lightning Rod and various other rides at Dollywood, Sarah and I saw her perform “Rocky Top” at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Her work touched just about everyone in some way, it seems. If we all attempt to do just 10 percent of what she did in her lifetime, what a world that would be.

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine,” I know that. Is your heart merry? May your hearts be merry!

Take care of your body; take care of your lungs; take care of your heart; take care of your mind.

My heart is with those filled with sorrow or discomfort, those who may have lost a child or a loved one, prayers for those watching a family member go through a struggle, and to those suffering. Peace be with you.

We wish you tidings of comfort and joy.

Jeff Kuss USMC Memorial within Lee Victory Recreation Park (110 Sam Ridley Pkwy E., Smyrna) in remembrance of the 25th Anniversary of 9/11. The 3.7 mile course includes the Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport and Smyrna Municipal golf course with the finish line at the memorial. Annual Festival Delivers Three Days of Old-Time Music and Tennessee Tradition, Sept. 13–15 at Hop Springs A Murfreesboro tradition returns

to Hop Springs this September as Uncle Dave Macon Days: A Roots Rendezvous celebrates its 2026 festival with three days of bluegrass, old-time, Americana and gospel music, contests, dancing and family-friendly entertainment. This year the festival will be bringing back its longrunning instrument competitions.

The next chapter of Uncle Dave Macon Days is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11 through Sunday, Sept. 13 at Hop Springs, 6790 John Bragg Hwy. Organizers describe the event as a continuation of Uncle Dave Macon Days’ longstanding mission of preserving and promoting American roots music while introducing those traditions to new generations.

as a small banjo-picking contest grew into a much larger annual celebration at Cannonsburgh Village for decades, before moving in recent years to Hop Springs.

This year brings back one of the event’s signature attractions: the National OldTime Banjo Championship Contest, scheduled for Saturday morning, along with competitions in bluegrass banjo, traditional fiddle, beginner musician, old-time singing, Dobro, mandolin, flat-pick guitar and shade tree pickin’ band. The National Old-Time Banjo Contest, recognized by Congress in 1986, is returning as part of the event’s continuing effort to preserve the clawhammer-style banjo tradition as-

sociated with Uncle Dave Macon.

“With the return of the National Old-Time Banjo Contest, our festival acknowledges the significance of this distinctive Tennessee musical tradition, which continues to be celebrated by new generations of skilled musicians,” said Uncle Dave Macon Days President Gloria Christy. “Their efforts honor the enduring

legacy of Dave Macon and his influence on American roots music, all within proximity to Uncle Dave’s original homeplace in the Kittrell Community.”

Uncle Dave Macon helped banjo music make the transition from rural folk life to modern country music, according to music historians. Macon became one of the first Grand Ole Opry superstars, paving the way for future country and bluegrass artists.

Macon spent much of his life in the rural Kittrell Community, just east of Murfreesboro. Before his popular musical career began, Uncle Dave made his living in that countryside by farming and operating a mule-and-wagon freight company between Murfreesboro and Woodbury. His line, known as the Macon Midway Mule and Mitchell Wagon Transportation Company, carried produce and supplies along the route. As he traveled from stop to stop, he sang, played banjo, swapped stories, and entertained the people he met, turning an ordinary workday into a kind of traveling performance, according to Uncle Dave Macon Days organizers. That experience helped the skilled banjo player shape the lively stage personality, comic timing, and old-time musical style that later drew mass audiences to him.

In 1925, Uncle Dave became one of the original members of the Grand Ole Opry and he continued performing well into his 70s.

The Roots Rendezvous festival remembers his musical and cultural legacy, bridging the gap between the old-time tunes from a century ago to modern-day takes on Americana and country styles.

Friday’s music begins with the MTSU String Band and the Cripple Creek Cloggers, followed by the Nashville-based Howlin’ Brothers, whose sound combines old-time bluegrass, roots, blues and Americana. The evening concludes with the Joey Fletcher Band, a Southern-rock and blues group led by slide guitarist Joey Fletcher.

Saturday offers a packed slate of instrument competitions, as well as numerous performances.

Leroy Troy, the 1996 National Old-Time Banjo Champion whose star rose as a recurring performer on RFD-TV’s The Marty Stuart Show, will take the stage, as will the Noelle Goodin Band, Jackson Harris, Jake Leg Stompers and Monroeville. Jake Leg Stompers mix jug-band music, blues, ragtime, early jazz and Appalachian stringband sounds, while Monroeville brings together bluegrass, country and blues.

Sunday’s program shifts toward gospel, classic songwriting and community jamming, with Lisa Law’s Gospel Showcase, Delyn Christian and the John Prine Tribute Band, and the Hop Springs Da Jam Band closing the festival.

The weekend also features an artisan village, named for Mary Matilda “Tildy” Richardson Macon, wife of Uncle Dave, highlighting essentials of Tennessee heritage: the home, hearth, garden, loom, quilt frame, and handmade objects that connected generations.

Matilda Macon was known in the community as a renowned quilter and tremendous cook whose work helped anchor the Macon family’s farm and home life in Kittrell. Festival visitors will be able to observe demonstrations in quilting, sewing, weaving, basketry, woodcraft, blacksmithing, soap making, food preservation, gardening, heritage cooking and related arts.

Uncle Dave Macon Days: A Roots Rendezvous also includes wagon rides pulled by mules, a farm animal petting zoo, and lots of other activities and food vendors.

Sounds LaFarge’s latest album, Rhumba Country, draws from country, rock ’n’ roll, R&B, rock steady, mambo and tropicália.

The Illinois-born singer-songwriter developed the album in part while working on a farm in Maine, with songs inspired by everything from farming and love to music from around the world. The result is an upbeat, colorful record that LaFarge describes as being in “technicolor.”

Sept. 27 Country music gets its turn Sept. 27 when Hannah Harper and Mo Pitney share the underground stage. The Missouri-born Harper recently became the first female country singer to win American Idol since Carrie Underwood with her roots-driven voice and takes on motherhood, while country powerhouse Pitney brings traditional country influences to the one-night performance full of heartfelt songwriting and timeless twang.

Nov. 13–14 and 20–21 Few artists are more closely associated with The Caverns than The SteelDrivers, who return for a four-night “Four of a Kind” residency Nov. 13–14 and Nov. 20–21.

The band’s relationship with playing Tennessee caves dates back to the first Bluegrass Underground performances (at Cumberland Caverns in McMinnville) in 2008. Rather than simply repeating the same concert four times, each night of the residency will offer something a little different. The shows will feature tiered, first-come, first-served seating.

And that’s only part of what is on the calendar. The Caverns also has upcoming performances from artists including Rodrigo y Gabriela, Parcels, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Palace, Big Gigantic and others.

Plus, the venue periodically turns its underground space over to special events, including the Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular (March 2027), which combines Pink Floyd’s music with lasers, lighting, video and special effects. Majestic White Great Egrets Spotted Around Murfreesboro story and photos by Ashleigh Newnes

Have you noticed the large white birds with long necks and legs around Murfreesboro? If so, you aren’t alone.

The Great Egrets have created quite a stir over the last few months, with several neighbors asking about these birds, wondering what they are and getting excited when spotting them in the natural places around town.

What exactly is a Great Egret? These beautiful white wading birds, scientifically known as Ardea alba, are members of the heron family (Ardeidae) and can be found throughout Tennessee, often near ponds, rivers, creeks and other areas with shallow water. Their long legs and necks make them perfectly suited for moving through the water in search of their next meal.

Much like the more commonly spotted Great Blue Heron, one of the most fascinating things about Great Egrets is the way they hunt.

They can stand almost perfectly still in shallow water, patiently watching for fish, frogs, crayfish and other small creatures. Their patience is often their greatest hunting tool, as they spend long periods carefully watching the water before making their move. Then, in an instant, they extend their long neck and strike with its long pointed bill, often catching its meal before it has much of a chance to escape.

Around Murfreesboro, Great Egrets have been spotted in a variety of wet habitats, including along the Stones River and around Murfree Spring. Murfree Spring, in particular, has become a place where people are enjoying watching the elegant birds as they wade through the water and search for food. Their presence has brought a little extra excitement to an area already abundant with wildlife, giving visitors another reason to slow down and take in the natural activity happening around them.

Great Egrets are found throughout much of the United States during the warmer months, and Tennessee is part of their range. They move south as temperatures drop, making late summer and early fall a prime time for sightings. Their striking, bright white feathers make them especially noticeable against the green landscape, and their movements, along with the availability of food and suitable habitat, can make their presence more noticeable at certain times of the year.

Their striking white plumage has also played an unfortunate role in the history of the species. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, feathers from Great Egrets and other wading birds were highly prized for decorating fashionable hats and clothing. The demand for these plumes led to widespread hunting of the birds, contributing to serious declines in their populations.

The decline helped spark the early conservation movement in the United States. The Great Egret eventually became a symbol of that effort and was chosen as the emblem of the National Audubon Society. Today, seeing these birds around Murfreesboro is a reminder of how far conservation efforts have come and how important it is to protect wildlife and the habitats they depend on.

How lucky are we to witness the fruits of historic conservation efforts, even here in the heart of Murfreesboro? There is something special about local residents getting excited over a Great Egret sighting, asking questions and pointing them out to one another.

A bird once hunted to near extinction in North America can now be found wading through our local waterways right here in Murfreesboro, giving the community one more reason to appreciate the wild places that remain among us.

by Providing Food, Shelter and Water Fall migration turns many local backyards into potential pit stops for birds on the move, and a few smart tweaks can make yours irresistible. As nesting season wraps up, birds are shifting from raising families to finding food and safety for the months ahead.

Many birds begin traveling in flocks, teaming up with their own species, or joining mixed groups of birds that forage together and learn new ways to find food.

“Your yard can be exactly what they’re looking for and will become part of that daily routine,” according to information from Jeff and Joann Royer, owners of Murfreesboro’s Wild Birds Unlimited nature shop.

Fall is also prime time to refresh bird feeding setups.

“Be sure to clean and repair feeders and make sure they are easy to refill during the winter months. It is vital to keep food fresh and consistent so passing birds remember your yard as a reliable

stop,” the Royers advise. “When the colder weather hits, they will come back looking for what they know.”

Also, do not underestimate the importance of providing water. A moving water source is one of the strongest bird magnets in a yard. The sound alone can pull migrating birds down to investigate, giving them a place to drink, bathe and maintain healthy feathers for the long flight ahead.

Springhouse Theatre Company Presents The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Sept. 11–20 Smyrna’s Springhouse Theatre will present the powerful and visually stunning musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame this September, inviting audiences to experience a story of love, belonging, courage and redemption set against the breathtaking backdrop of medieval Paris.

Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel and the Disney animated film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame features music by Alan Menken and lyrics

by Stephen Schwartz. The musical pairs a dramatic story with a soaring score that has become one of the most celebrated in musical theater.

At the heart of the story is Quasimodo, portrayed by local actor Matthew Henry. As the isolated bellringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, Quasimodo has spent much of his life hidden from the world, longing to experience life beyond the cathedral walls.

His encounter with Esmeralda, a young woman whose compassion defies the prejudices surrounding them, challenges everything he has been taught about himself and the world beyond Notre Dame.

Rutherford County Considers New Jail Property Owners of Proposed Site Oppose Eminent Domain by ashlen jones

utherford County continues to move forward with plans for a new jail and Sheriff ’s Office campus on the former county fairgrounds property, but the owners oppose eminent domain, say the land is under a $38 million contract, and point to questions about whether the site has enough sewer capacity.

The Rutherford County Commission voted 12–9 on July 16 to approve a resolution allowing the county to negotiate for the property, located near the Rutherford Boulevard and Church Street intersection, and to begin condemnation proceedings if a voluntary purchase cannot be completed.

County officials say the approximately 52.67-acre South Church Street property offers the best long-term solution for replacing a detention center operating beyond its original design capacity. Its location beside the county’s Correctional Work Center and near its juvenile justice facilities could also reduce transportation, medical and food service costs, according to commissioners.

The resolution estimates the property’s acquisition value at between $14 million and $18 million. It allows officials to negotiate a voluntary purchase within that range.

The owners, Joni Werthan and PWU Properties, have asked commissioners to cancel the condemnation resolution. They say Rutherford County previously offered $23.782 million for the property during a public sales process but was not selected.

purchaser for $38 million on June 5 and remains under contract.

If the county government proceeds with condemnation, the final compensation could ultimately be decided by a court or jury.

According to written responses provided on the property owners’ behalf, the old fairgrounds property has remained in the same family for more than 60 years.

Attorney Joshua Denton, who represents the owners, wrote that the public listing and bidding process attracted more than 30 offers, including five of at least $35 million.

Rutherford County’s $23.782 million offer during that process was approximately $5.8 million higher than the $18 million upper end of the acquisition range later included in its condemnation resolution.

In a July 24 letter, Denton asked commissioners to reconsider its resolution. He argued that a county appraisal valuing the property at $10.7 million, with an effective date in October 2025, does not account for more recent information about its value. His letter cited the county’s later offer, the current $38 million contract and a recent sale of other industrial and commercial property in Murfreesboro.

Denton also cited a 2024 appraisal commissioned by the City of Murfreesboro that valued the tract at approximately $19.99 million before a right-of-way acquisition.

He argued that Tennessee law requires the county to obtain an appraisal considering the

property’s highest and best use before filing a condemnation action. Denton contended that a current appraisal would value the property far above the $18 million figure included in the resolution.

The county’s condemnation resolution states that the existing jail and Sheriff ’s Office are operating beyond their original design capacity and face long-term operational, security, accessibility, life-safety and expansion concerns.

Commissioner Pettus Read said he supported all the resolutions related to building a new detention facility. He served for more than two years on the committee studying the county’s options and has spent 12 years on the Public Safety Committee, including eight years as its chairman.

Read said his committee service required numerous visits inside the jail and allowed him to observe how its conditions have changed over the years. He said experts from the University of Tennessee and the State of Tennessee studied the building and that “all the reports were not good.”

Read also questioned whether the soil and property at the current jail are suitable for future development.

“Yes, building on the present property is possible, but in my opinion we will be right back here in 30 years,” Read said.

If the county moves forward with condemnation, Read said the disagreement over the property’s value would be handled through the legal process.

“When you enter litigation and eminent domain, market value will be determined by the courts,” Read said.

The owners also said the county did not notify them that commissioners would consider condemning their property. Denton wrote that they learned about the resolution by chance on the evening before the July 16 meeting. The published agenda described the item only as “Resolution Approving the Condemnation Resolution.” It did not identify the property, parcel number or owners.

If the county does not acquire the property, the current purchaser intends to develop a commercial park allowed under its lightindustrial zoning, according to the owners.

The owners estimate that the completed development could potentially generate approximately $1 million per year in propertytax revenue for Murfreesboro and Rutherford County. They said it would also create employment and commercial activity.

Denton wrote that other properties currently listed for sale in Rutherford County appear to meet the county’s stated requirements at lower prices. He encouraged commissioners to consider those properties before interfering with the owners’ contracted sale.

Questions have also been raised about the site’s sewer capacity. In a July 23 letter to county officials, Murfreesboro City Manager Darren Gore said the project would require a sewer variance. The property has sewer capacity equal to 208 single-family units, while the existing jail has discharge capacity equal to 278 units.

That produces a shortfall of approximately 70 single-family-unit equivalents based on the existing jail’s capacity.

Gore said the shortfall would increase proportionately if the proposed detention facility were larger and recommended that the county resolve the sewer issue before committing additional money toward acquiring or developing there.

Long before the property became the center of this local jail debate, it served as a gathering place for entertainment.

Bill Wilson wrote in a recent Murfreesboro Pulse column that the fairgrounds were established here in 1868 and included a half-mile horse track, amphitheater, livestock stalls and stables. The property later hosted horse races, exhibitions, circuses, revivals and carnivals.

Businessman Joe Werthan purchased the property for $31,500 in the 1950s, according to records. His granddaughter, Joni Werthan, who operates Williamson County horse farm Warioto Farm, now holds the land.

Read, who decided not to seek re-election, will leave office at the end of August. He said the new County Commission will inherit the issue but believes the previous commission has left it in a good position to move forward.

“The clock is ticking, and if they move this can further down the road, they may find themselves with larger problems and even more cost,” Read said.

here are more eyes in the sky than ever before, and some of them in Murfreesboro are drones that belong to the police department.

Drone as First Responder programs are expanding rapidly across the country, a surge driven by a Federal Aviation Administration decision last year to streamline the waiver process that lets police departments fly drones beyond visual line of sight.

Previously, police departments needed a pilot or observer to keep a drone within eyesight at all times. Under the new waivers, police can remotely dispatch drones to a scene without anyone tracking them by sight.

The premise behind these Drone as First Responder programs is fairly simple.

FAA-certified police officers dispatch drones from a central police building and fly them remotely beyond visual line of sight.

Depending on the department’s policy, the drones are deployed for specific emergency calls or active criminal investigations. The major benefit is that drones can arrive on a scene faster than a patrol car and gather “situational awareness” from above.

Larry Flowers, a Public Safety Information Officer for the Murfreesboro Police Department, says MPD is currently evaluating a DFR program, though it has not yet decided to establish one. City council approval would be required if MPD established such a program, Flowers says.

Murfreesboro police are no strangers to drones, however, and do currently use them.

Flowers says the department currently has an Unmanned Aircraft Systems Team made up of 15 pilots who hold Part 107 licenses.

These officers keep the drones in their patrol vehicles and can deploy them upon request for crimes in progress, missing and lost individuals, motor vehicle accidents, fugitives, escapees, or hostage situations.

Over the past few years, MPD has amassed a fleet of eight drones. Some were made by the Chinese companies DJI and Autel before the U.S. Federal Communications Commission banned new products from those companies last year. Flowers says MPD was grandfathered in and can continue using those Chinese-made drones despite the ban.

MPD also currently flies two Skydiobrand drones acquired this year. Skydio is the same company that recently supplied drones to the Metro Nashville Police Department for a DFR trial that ran from May through August. Murfreesboro Police Grows Drone Fleet Amid Recent Heightened Surveillance Concerns

council approval, under a free-trial arrangement in which the company provided the drones to the city at no cost.

Skydio, a San Mateo, California-based drone maker valued at $4.4 billion, provides drones to every branch of the U.S. military, along with local law enforcement, federal agencies, the armed forces of roughly 29 allied nations, and energy, construction, and civil engineering companies. Federal procurement records show that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has purchased Skydio drones.

In Murfreesboro, drones have already proven useful in fighting crime. In May, a member of the MPD Unmanned Aircraft Systems Team helped officers locate and apprehend a man suspected of firing shots into a home occupied by several people. A drone spotted the suspect hiding in a tree line near La Vergne Pike and Aberdeen Circle. Lt. Stephen Luter of MPD told NewsChannel5 the technology gave officers a critical edge, citing its thermal imaging and speed to the scene.

But as the technology spreads, civil liberties advocates warn oversight hasn’t kept up. It’s a concern that echoes the backlash Murfreesboro residents have already directed at the Flock Safety license plate readers installed throughout the city.

Casey Coleman, a Murfreesboro resident, says she “hates the concept” of Drone as First Responder programs.

Last year Coleman began researching Flock cameras and became “extremely op-

posed” to them. In June, the Murfreesboro City Council voted to renew its contract with Flock despite several residents speaking out against the surveillance technology during the public comment period.

“There is no reason for any police department to have this much technology, money in their budget, and firepower, as if they are prepared to go to war,” Coleman said. “Who would they be going to war with?”

Beryl Lipton, a Senior Investigative Researcher with the Electronic Frontier Foundation who tracks police drone programs, says the free-trial model driving much of this expansion follows a familiar pattern.

Skydio has a close relationship with Axon, a law enforcement technology company that makes products such as TASERs, police body cameras, and cloud-based digital evidence software. Lipton says Axon has historically used existing contracts to introduce departments to new surveillance tools.

Sometimes new capabilities are added to long-term contract extensions rather than putting them before elected officials, Lipton says. Because municipal purchasing rules are often triggered by dollar thresholds, and these technologies have gotten cheaper, many of these deals may never reach a public vote.

Lipton also warns that new surveillance capabilities don’t necessarily require new hardware. A software update, she says, is enough to turn an existing drone into a license plate reader or add object recognition and biometric analysis. The capabilities

can go live without any public notice, since so much of the oversight of these programs may rest on internal police policy rather than binding law.

“So the concern is that if the public isn’t aware this is happening, and there aren’t good policies in place, it can really be a software update or a switch getting flipped, and new capabilities become operational without anyone in the municipality having awareness of or oversight of it,” Lipton says.

DFR programs have also recently drawn scrutiny after Wired revealed leaked footage from 48 hours of San Francisco Police Department drone flights. ACLU analyst Jay Stanley reviewed the footage and concluded it shows a remarkably powerful surveillance capability largely unnoticed by residents.

Stanley said many of the SFPD drone flights appeared “aimless” or added little to actual police response.

Lipton also reviewed the leaked footage and says a couple of things stood out to her.

“It highlighted how unaware people are that they’re being tracked by a drone flying that high,” Lipton says. “Also, when departments talk about the drone responding to a crime or gathering situational awareness on a dangerous situation, it can turn out to just be responding to some random person who reported someone else as ‘suspicious.’”

Lipton says that in one case, it was two kids on their way to play basketball. A drone followed them, waiting to see if they were going to do something illegal.

“That’s not really legitimate police work, and it doesn’t line up with the idea that the drone is being used to respond to an active crime scene or a dangerous situation,” she says. “Those were just people going about their business.”

Drone as First Responder programs are taking off elsewhere in Tennessee. Vanderbilt University Public Safety launched its own program in May, and the Mt. Juliet Police Department plans to follow suit this September.

Skydio says it works with roughly 1,500 public safety agencies nationwide, including 47 in Tennessee. It isn’t alone in the market.

Flock Safety entered the drone business after acquiring law enforcement tech startup Aerodome in October 2024.

Drone technology may help police respond faster, but as Murfreesboro’s recent experience with license plate cameras shows, it also leaves plenty of civil liberty and privacy questions unresolved.

Murfreesboro’s Maple Street Biscuit Company on Medical Center Parkway will soon transition to Biscuit Belly; in fact, all 34 remaining Maple Street Biscuit locations will convert throughout the next 18 to 24 months, with conversions starting in the Cincinnati and Richmond, Virginia areas.

Biscuit Belly, which currently has 15 locations, is aiming for over 60 restaurants by the end of 2028.

National Health Investors will build a new headquarters at 1340 Gateway Blvd. Initial design plans show a 23,800-square-foot office on approximately 2 acres of land along Gateway Boulevard.

The Kirksey Old Main building, a landmark of the Middle Tennessee State University campus, has celebrated its long-awaited grand re-opening after updates to the building—just in time for the fall 2026 semester. The KOM, as well as nearby Rutledge Hall, recently underwent a $54 million combined renovation, updating both spaces.

The upgraded KOM is now the home of the MTSU Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences departments and Data Science programs within the College of Basic and Applied Science.

The Floyd Stadium-facing facade on the north side of Kirksey Old Main marries clean, modern lines with historic bones.

Floor-to-ceiling panes of glass flood the new lobby with natural light, while the lobby’s design provides accessible entry. The new addition replaced the razed E.W. Midgett Building, which was attached to KOM for 65 years. The building’s original brick walls and carved details flank the lower entry to halls of offices, while sleek, airy stairs lead up to a second floor filled with classrooms and computer labs. In total, the space contains three tutoring labs, four student lounges, five computer labs, 14 classrooms and 94 offices, with a total renovated area of approximately 88,370 square feet.

Howard G. Kirksey was an administrator at MTSU from 1960 to 1969, serving as director of the Graduate Division, head of the College of Education, dean of instruction, dean of faculty and acting president.

In 1978, the university’s Old Main Building was named in his honor. His son, Howard Graden Kirksey Jr., attended the ribbon cutting in his father’s honor.

The City of Murfreesboro is in the process of purchasing property next to Discovery Center. The lot, which housed the commercial center that long contained the Wagon Wheel bar, among other businesses, is now up for sale. Due to its location, the City has considered buying the property to accommodate the area road- and sidewalkwidening project, and possibly add more space for Discovery Center parking.

Judge Don R. Ash and Ms. Mary Catherine Schneider were honored at the recent Rutherford County Recovery Court building dedication, which culminates a $1.5 million dollar building renovation and expansion project that will allow for additional classroom and training areas.

The Recovery Court Program is comprised of the Drug Court with Judge Jimmy Turner, Mental Health Court with Judge Barry Tidwell, DUI Court with Judge Lisa Eischeid, and Veterans Treatment Court with Judge Trey McFarlin.

This second-chance program works by helping citizens to get out of the justice system and overcome substance abuse so they can lead productive lives in the community.

Creekside Logistics, a ClassA industrial development in Smyrna, developed and sold in partnership with Principal Asset Management. The project includes three state-of-the-art warehouse buildings, totaling 371,000 square feet on 43 acres. The transaction marks the seventh transaction between Foundry Commercial and Principal.

RREEF Property Trust purchased the property for $81.75 million. Creekside Logistics offers direct access to I-24, creating prime regional connectivity and efficiency for tenants. The development features tilt‑wall construction, 32‑foot clear heights, and modern design specifications that meet the needs of today’s industrial tenants.

Following the transaction, Foundry Commercial has also been retained as property manager for Creekside Logistics, continuing its role in the asset’s long-term success.

CLOSED Ten Seconds Yunnan Rice Noodle recently announced its closure after two years in business in Gateway Village.

“This was not an easy decision,” read a thank-you letter posted to the restaurant’s social media. “We poured our hearts into this restaurant and truly hoped we could continue serving our community. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we have reached a point where we can no longer keep the restaurant open.”

Many Murfreesboro diners responded to the Facebook post with sadness and comments saying that they would miss the food very much.

The Laboratory Smoke Shop has closed its downtown Murfreesboro location. In addition to hemp, vape and smoke products, the Laboratory also carried vintage clothing and local artwork.

Papa Murphy’s has closed its Murfreesboro locations and is in the process of closing up to 50 more restaurants, citing years of declining sales. The announcement came during MTY Group’s secondquarter earnings call. The Canadian restaurant company, which acquired Papa Murphy’s in 2019, said it plans to close 68 company-owned restaurants across its brands, with 45 to 50 of those closures expected to be Papa Murphy’s locations.

With Murfreesboro locations already closed, Papa Murphy’s appears to be pulling out of Middle Tennessee completely, with remaining store closures expected to take place over the next six to nine months.

The Grumpy Bookpeddler Murfreesboro Bookstore Celebrates 15 Years of Family Tradition STORY By Bracken Mayo For 15 years now, The Grumpy Bookpeddler has been giving Murfreesboro readers a place to browse, buy, sell and discover used books. The small family business has become a downtown destination, with more than 50,000 volumes on its shelves.

Alan Wollard, the original “Grumpy Bookpeddler,” opened the store in 2011. After over a decade behind the counter and overseeing a location change to 610 W. College St., Mr. Grumpy would eventually retire in 2024.

But the beloved shop would continue under the leadership of the next generation, with his daughter, Megan Felts, taking over the operation and continuing the family’s book-selling tradition.

Today, shoppers can find everything from children’s books and popular fiction to collectible and specialty titles, along with puzzles, gift books, locally made merchandise and a selection of new books by local authors at The Grumpy Bookpeddler. Paperbacks start at $3 and hardbacks at $7.

The store is also a place where books can make their way back into circulation—and where local readers can turn unwanted books into cash. With thousands of titles constantly moving through the shelves, part of the fun is never quite knowing what you might find on the next visit.

The Pulse recently spoke with Megan Felts about taking over the business, reaching the store’s 15-year milestone and what it’s like to make a living surrounded by books.

When I first took over, I was very worried I wouldn’t be able to live up to his standards.

What’s your favorite part about your job?

Helping customers find books and also seeing young children who come in excited for books.

What else would you like Murfreesboro to know about the Grumpy Bookpeddler and the used book industry?

For us, a huge part of our business relies on the community. Bringing us your gently used fiction and nonfiction books and shopping with us will keep us here for years to come.

Murfreesboro Pulse: What was

your first experience in the world of entrepreneurship, or your first business?

Megan Felts: I have had a handmade craft business for the last 15-ish years, selling hair bows, T-shirts, tumblers, repainted upcycled items and 3D printed items.

What is the most frustrating or difficult aspect of running the business?

At times, people will come in to sell their books to me and try to haggle the prices for a used book. A lot of people also assume I will buy every book that comes in, and I just don’t have the room to do that.

Tell me about how your father started the Grumpy Bookpeddler, and then how later you took over the business.

My dad, Mr. Grumpy, started the bookstore after he retired from the corporate world in 2011. Books have always been a huge love in my family. In 2023 I was working at a UPS store and ready for something new, and really wanted to work for myself. Dad suggested he wanted to retire in 2024 and asked me to join him in the new year.

What advice do you have for people starting a small business?

Working for yourself is not just a 9-to-5 job.

You will work way more than you thought to make the business successful.

What challenges have you overcome in growing your business?

Continuing my dad’s business successfully

Who are your top customers?

I have several folks who are weekly or monthly visitors.

How are you getting the word out about your business?

I do a lot of social media marketing, advertise in the Pulse, on Google, and the biggest is word of mouth.

City Cafe was located in downtown Murfreesboro, lounges on the rear deck of the City Tennessee. It operated for 124 years, beCafe in 1936. fore closing in January 2025 as Tennessee’s oldest continuously running restaurant.

Hello everyone, I do hope your sum-

table to the left as you walked in, man, you had arrived. You see, the City Cafe was the place where folks told their stories and did business. The telling of tales included politics and stories of everyday life, from who was getting married, or divorced, new additions to families and who had recently passed. You would hear about job opportunities, like at State Farm, the VA and GE, or a company laying off workers. You could hear about the stock market from the local stockbroker or hear about sporting events of the coming weekend. The City Cafe was the MobilePatrol app of its time. What’s going on with MTSU? Who’s gonna win the Celebration? If there was a war going on, you would hear opinions on that. These are just some of the things I remember. It always felt like a little fraternity and it was cool to be seen there. City Cafe was a social barometer of its time.

The food was good as well. Another thing I thought was cool was that it had names of

dishes like the “Hearty Murfree”—two eggs cooked any style, home fries, a small pancake, biscuits and gravy or toast and grits, a play on words referencing the man Murfreesboro was named after, Hardy Murfree.

It was 1936 when the eatery hired its first waitresses, sisters Audie and Sara Overall and Peggy Brown. The business changed hands numerous times over the decades; some of the other owners’ names include: the Manley brothers, Hall, Mason, McKnight, Watson, Cooper, Simpson, Perkins and Kelloggs, most recently.

City Cafe was part of Americana here in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, for 125 years.

This September, Big Bad Breakfast will be going into business at the old City Cafe location at 113 E. Main St., starting a new chapter at the local restaurant space. Barbara Thomas, a dear friend of mine, will be managing the new restaurant, working with restaurateur Molly James. They have big plans and intend to keep pieces of City Cafe still alive in the business. The new spot will also serve lunch and they will be open seven days a week. Many remember Thomas from her days operating B. McNeel’s.

Thank you to City Cafe for all the memories. I look forward to making new ones at Big Bad Breakfast.

Sports Blue Raiders Kick Off 2026 Football Season Sept. 5 at MTSU’s Floyd Stadium For MTSU football fans, the 2026 season brings plenty of reasons to make a trip to Floyd Stadium—aside from the sounds of marching band music, gathering as a community for NCAA football action on Saturdays down South, and a chance to feel the fall air. The Blue Raiders enter the season with a new quarterback at the controls, a collection of experienced returning players, and a schedule that includes six home games, three midweek Conference USA contests and the team’s first-ever trip to play the University of Kansas.

The season begins at home Sept. 5 against Murray State, with kickoff for that game set for 6 p.m., followed by a trip to Marshall and a Sept. 19 home meeting with Nevada. MTSU closes September visiting Jacksonville State.

Middle Tennessee begins October with a chance to test itself against a Big 12 opponent in Lawrence; the Oct. 3 road trip will mark the first meeting between the Blue Raiders and Kansas Jayhawks.

Conference USA play will then move into midweek territory, a format C-USA began in 2023 to highlight some of the conference’s teams in Tuesday and Wednesday evening games on national television. Delaware visits Floyd Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 13, followed by a Tuesday night trip to Florida International and a Wednesday home game against defending Conference USA champion Kennesaw State on Oct. 28.

The November stretch includes the annual rivalry game with Western Kentucky on Nov. 7, and trips to Liberty and then Sam Houston before the regular-season finale in 34 * September 2026 * boropulse.com

The Blue Raiders are entering its third season under head coach Derek Mason.

At quarterback, Nicholas Vattiato, who spent several seasons establishing himself as one of the most prolific passers in MTSU history, is gone. Vattiato finished his college career with 9,674 passing yards—a mark that gets him into the top 200 quarterbacks of all time in the FBS career passing yard list.

The expected candidate to take over under center is Roman Gagliano, who made a strong impression when he got his opportunity late in the 2025 season.

Gagliano started the final three games of the year after Vattiato was injured. In those three starts, he threw for 1,005 yards and seven touchdowns while adding 166 rushing yards and two rushing scores. He was especially impressive in his first start against Western Kentucky, accounting for 471 yards of total offense—383 passing and 88 rushing.

MTSU head coach Derek Mason said in the spring that Gagliano had finished the 2025 season playing some of his best football.

“Now it’s about building on that—continuing to grow his command, his leadership, and his consistency within the offense,” Mason said. “He’s put in the work, and we’re excited to see that carry over.”

Gagliano has subsequently been selected to represent MTSU at the 2026 Conference USA Football Kickoff and was named a third-team preseason All-CUSA selection by Phil Steele.

Wide receiver Cam’ron Lacy returns to the Blue Raiders after a breakout 2025 season.

The redshirt junior caught 38 passes for 549 yards and three touchdowns last year, averaging 14.4 yards per reception. He earned second-team preseason All-CUSA recognition and was also named to the 2026 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

At 6-foot-4, redshirt senior receiver A.J. Jones gives the Blue Raiders another experienced target. Jones caught 28 passes for 216 yards and five touchdowns in 2025, including two touchdown receptions in the season-ending victory at New Mexico State.

Graduate transfer Markus Allen spent 2025 at Mississippi State; the 6-foot-2 receiver also previously had a productive season at Eastern Michigan in 2024.

On defense, redshirt senior defensive end Reggie Johnson returns after recording 34 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in 2025. He was named second-team preseason All-CUSA by Phil Steele. Linebacker Ashton Taylor, a transfer from Jackson State, and cornerback Jason Hardy, coming off a strong season at Grand Valley State, were also selected to Steele’s third team.

Punter Ashton Logan was Steele’s firstteam preseason All-CUSA selection after averaging 44.7 yards per punt in 2025.

After a tough 2025, the team has plenty to improve upon. After a November loss at rival Western Kentucky, the 2025 Blue Raiders sat at 1–9.

But MTSU finished 2025 with a 3–9 overall record, closing the year with consecutive victories over Sam Houston and New Mexico State.

Fans remain hopeful that the finish to the 2025 campaign provided at least a glimpse of what the team could become, with Gagliano’s emergence coinciding with the twogame winning streak to close the season.

“You saw a team at the end of last year that was starting to figure it out,” Mason said.

While the football itself is the centerpiece, MTSU has increasingly made game day into a family and community event.

Before each home game, fans can gather at Walnut Grove for Party in the Grove, which will feature live music, food trucks, sponsor activities and other pregame entertainment.

The university’s Raider Walk gives fans an opportunity to line the route and welcome the team into Floyd Stadium before kickoff.

Don’t Leave Your Legacy to Chance September is America’s financial wake-up call

eptember is Life Insurance Awareness Month. It’s a time to assess your personal financial situation. Do you have a family? What is the one thing you wouldn’t want them to miss?

Now that you have that in mind, what would happen if you aren’t here to provide for them? Would they miss out on that experience, event or lifestyle that you just thought of ?

Protect Today People often think “I’m young, nothing will happen to me” or “I don’t need insurance yet, because we don’t have any kids,” but insurability isn’t guaranteed. If a major health incident happens to you, then you may not qualify for insurance when you need it.

According to the National Institutes of Health, individuals who contracted COVID-19 faced a 100% increased risk of experiencing a major heart attack, stroke, or cardiac death for up to three years post-infection. This staggering spike in long-term risk contributed to over 228,000 excess cardiovascular deaths between 2020 and 2022, effectively erasing a decade of progress in American heart health. If you had a heart issue, there is a likelihood that you wouldn’t be able to get life insurance.

In addition, conditions like diabetes, weight and other factors could exclude you from coverage or make it very expensive just when you need it most. This is why it’s so important to plan ahead and consider what you will need in the future, not just what would be needed if you passed away today.

Will Your Needs Change?

For young families starting out, you might think about the

amount of insurance you would need today, but what will you need in a decade? Would your coverage still be adequate to protect your family and allow them to live their future lifestyle when you are making more than you are now? For example, if you and your spouse were making $50,000 each when you first got married, how likely would it be that you are making $100,000 each in 10 years? This might warrant getting twice as much insurance as you initially thought.

What’s Changed?

We live in a different world than our parents and grandparents, but one thing they did was get life insurance for their children when they were born. Why did that change? Possibly due to a decrease in infant mortality, but there is a good reason to get life insurance for your children.

None of us want to think about our sweet babies passing away and similarly we might think it awful to consider receiving a check if our child died. But that doesn’t have to be the reason to get life insurance for your child. Guaranteed insurability is one of the best reasons.

Value of Insurance for Children Back in 2019, one of my neighbors came to me and asked if I could help her get life insurance for her 7-year-old son. It turns out he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and she was concerned that he wasn’t insurable. I reached out to a number of insurance companies and got mostly the same story: if he has it well controlled into adulthood, it’s possible he can get insurance, but he will pay way more than others will. If it isn’t well controlled, he will be uninsur-

able. Imagine 20 years later he is a father and wants to protect his family—will he be able to?

I got whole life insurance for my children when they were in their single digits and it was very inexpensive. It guarantees that they will have life insurance no matter what their health will be in the future. In fact, the particular policies I purchased for them allow them to add additional coverage later on based on standard health ratings even if they are not as healthy. This means I don’t have to worry about my children being able to provide protection for their future family.

Final Thoughts Approximately 51% of American adults own a life insurance policy, according to long-term industry tracking by LIMRA. Of the 49% that do not have life insurance, about 61% admit they need it but haven’t purchased it yet. Then there are those who have life insurance, but don’t have enough. This is your call to get life insurance now.

Perceived cost is one of the most common reasons people cite for not having insurance.

They often overestimate the cost of life insurance. The cost of not having the life insurance you need is much greater.

Simple Habits for a Healthier Fall

What if your biggest wellness breakthrough this year doesn’t come from trying something new, but from returning to the basics?

The calendar may still say summer, but September always feels like a bridge between seasons.

Vacation schedules wind down, children head back to school, and many of us find ourselves wondering where the summer went. Rather than waiting until January for a fresh start, consider this month your opportunity to pause, reflect

and reset. You don’t need a complete life makeover. In fact, lasting change rarely happens that way.

Small, consistent habits often have the greatest impact.

You may notice that many of these suggestions aren’t new.

You’ve probably heard them before.

That’s because they work.

Try not to be tempted to gloss over these ideas just because they’re familiar. Choose one or two that resonate with you and commit to putting them into action. Small, intentional steps repeated day after

Reset Your Sleep Summer often brings later nights, vacations, and less structured routines. Before changing anything else, focus on getting back to a consistent bedtime and wake-up time.

Add Before You Subtract Instead of focusing on what to eliminate, ask yourself, “what can I add?” Maybe it’s another serving of fruit, an extra vegetable, a protein-rich breakfast, or an evening walk. Positive habits naturally begin to replace less healthy ones.

Move Because You Love Your Body Exercise shouldn’t be punishment. Take a walk with a friend, ride your bike, try a fitness class, stretch, garden, or dance. The best exercise is the one you’ll continue doing because you enjoy it.

One of the healthiest habits I’ve built is simply getting outside.

Nearly every day you’ll find me walking or riding my bike along the Murfreesboro Greenway or through Stones River National Battlefield. Those miles have carried me through seasons of grief, big life decisions, celebrations, and ordinary Tuesdays. They remind me that sometimes the best therapy is fresh air, movement, and a little perspective.

One of the things I love most about living in Murfreesboro is that these beautiful places are available to all of us. The Greenway and Battlefield invite us to slow down, reconnect with nature, and recharge—without ever leaving town.

Clear One Space You don’t have to organize your entire house to feel refreshed. Choose one small area—a kitchen counter, your purse, a bathroom drawer, or even your car. A little less visual distraction can create a surprising sense of calm.

Tammy Tip: I’m a self-professed minimalist! I love clean countertops, organized drawers, and simple spaces. But if your style leans more toward intentional maximalism, that’s perfectly okay—and every bit as beautiful! You don’t have to part with the things you love.

Instead, try grouping similar items into beautiful baskets, bins, or containers to create a space that feels both functional and inviting. One of my favorite places to find organizing inspiration is The Container Store in Green Hills. I never leave without a new idea.

Take a Digital Pause Set aside one hour each day to unplug from your phone and social media. Read a book, journal, enjoy your porch, spend time with family, or simply sit quietly. Giving your mind a break from constant notifications can be one of the healthiest resets of all.

Choose One Next Step Finally, take a few quiet moments to ask yourself: • What’s working well in my life?

• What’s draining my energy?

• What do I want more of this fall?

• What can I gently let go of ?

Then choose one healthy habit to practice consistently over the next 30 days. It might be drinking more water, taking a daily walk, strength training twice a week, preparing healthier meals, or going to bed a little earlier.

Remember, wellness isn’t about perfection, and it isn’t about knowing what to do— most of us already do. The challenge isn’t finding more information; it’s putting that knowledge into action.

The habits you’ve read about here may not be new, but they are timeless because they work.

They are the building blocks of lasting health. Don’t overlook them simply because you’ve heard them before. Choose one habit and begin today. Your future self will thank you.

A new season is about to begin. Out come our fall clothes, we change our garden flowers and decorations and know that nature will soon cast its dormant state upon us. Fall begins the season of resetting, back-to-school, new routines, holidays approaching, then it’s New Year’s! That means the season for “fresh starts” is just around the corner: the pressure to self-analyze and see what you could do better, or at least differently.

It is the most popular time for people to decide “once and for all” that this new year will be the one they finally make a fresh start and do all the things that will make their life just right.

What if a fresh start isn’t what you need?

What if what you need is to simply notice what is already working and nurture it? We are continuously encouraged to reinvent ourselves so much that we often forget to simply notice what is already working in our lives. We are quick to discard something and pick the shiny new thing that will bring the adrenaline rush that misleads us into thinking we are headed toward a better, new and improved version of who we are. Massaging and pruning what is already there is more sustainable than burning it all down to start over.

No doubt you have more going right for you than not. A good practice for noticing what is working can happen first thing in the morning. When you wake up, before you get out of bed, try lying there and think of three things that you are thankful for. Include why you are thankful for them. Then, throughout the day, make a mental note of the things that take place.

What flows effortlessly? What goes smoothly?

What makes you smile, laugh or makes your heart beat a little faster? These will become part of your reservoir of gratitude and be some of the things you start your day with before you get out of bed.

I remember years ago a friend’s child had been ill.

She talked about how the natural concern of others prompted questions such as “oh no, what’s wrong?”

When we are asked that question, we immediately relay all of the woes, and it somehow reinforces all the negative thoughts already in progress. It makes the situation seem larger than it needs to be. She wanted to correct this in her thinking. She didn’t want to rehash all the things that seemed to be going wrong. As a God-fearing woman of faith, the thought occurred to her to ask instead, “what is going right?”

She quickly began to fill her thoughts with the many things that were good. Within a very short time, the child’s health improved, something she felt deeply grateful for and connected to her change in thought about the situation. That is certainly something to be thankful for.

the unexpected, I got a little clever when greeting people. When asked “How are you?” I often say something like “amazing” or “brilliant” and then add “but you already know that!” It always receives a smile that says “well, that was unexpected” or catches them off guard in a positive way. So often when we are asked “how’s it going?” people seem to chime in right away with something they are lamenting over. Problems and grief tend to bond people, as it seems there are always plenty of problems to go around. People like knowing they aren’t alone in their misery. But guess what?

When you share something positive it shifts the energy and the atmosphere becomes more alive.

Before you know it, you are forgetting about your woes, at least for a little while.

More recently I started greeting friends not with the typical “how are you?” but simply by greeting them with the qualities I saw in them. It might go something like “Hi. You are so smart, strong and friendly to everyone you meet” or “Hi, you brave, beautiful warrior.” It lights them up. Every. Single. Time. It has been fun just to mentally stop and pause to truly think about how I feel about the person I’m greeting. Even when it’s someone you don’t know or you’re being introduced to, you can pick up on characteristics of how they sound, look, carry themselves. We all like to know affirming things that others see in us. So express them.

— Joseph Campbell You don’t have to become a new version of yourself to experience life differently. Maybe you simply need to nurture the person you already are.

Like tending to a garden. When you water it, love it, look after it, give it sunlight and are patient, it flourishes. The colors are more vibrant and alive.

You don’t necessarily need a fresh start. You might just need to take a closer look at what you are doing well, nurture it, and give it room to grow.

If you do need a little change, maybe start with small or gentle adjustments. Maybe you don’t need a whole new routine, you just need 20 quieter minutes in the one you already have. Taking care of yourself doesn’t have to begin with some dramatic commitment. It could be something simple like taking a walk, spending an hour without your phone, sitting outside, getting a massage, calling someone, going to bed earlier, saying no to something or saying yes to something you’ve missed.

Take a closer look at yourself. What stands out?
