This month we have all sorts of events, happy hour specials, and business news for you.

A big collectors convention returns to Murfreesboro this June as the Imperial Commissary Collectors Convention takes over Embassy Suites. Sci-fi fans and toy collectors should check it out.

The Friday Night Live concerts are back on the Square this month. We’ve found a new chocolate fondue dipping establishment. Movies Under the Stars and Folkfest traditions continue. Friday Night Market in the Boro food truck fest rolls on, the farmers markets will have those early-season local crops, there’s a Banana Pudding Festival set for June 6, and, as usual, the area has all sorts of other events and new businesses.

Mr. Murfreesboro looks at some of the area’s businesses from years past, as he does. Stay tuned over the coming months for some unfolding installments of data center coverage and tech perspective—a hot topic these days.

I enjoyed hanging with the team from Smyrna’s Sign Language Studios and some in the area’s American Sign Language community at an ASL meet up at Lee Victory Park in May—a fun day at the park.

The family got to spend some time playing outside this month, enjoyed a Memorial Day family picnic in the park, and the boys had a fun camping excursion to scenic Lake Barkley during a beautiful weather window in a very rainy May. “Don’t touch a frog that has two colors, it may be poisonous.” Beckett dropping some more wisdom.

We spent a little time with the classic Nintendo Entertainment System recently. The old beast still fires up. Sometimes it requires a heavy beating to knock it back into reality–those who dislike violence should probably turn their heads during this savage assault upon the nearly 40-year-old machine—but, small miracle, it eventually starts back up, just like it’s 1988!

Shout-out to the pollo borracho from Nacho’s, the calzones from Marina’s, the red velvet cake doughnuts with the cream cheese frosting from Donut Country, the Hawaii roll from Wako, The fried chicken from Champy’s, the Couture’s Kitchen cheesecakes, the all-you-can-eat fried catfish, country-style ribs and country fried steak on the buffet at Emma’s down in Manchester . . . I think I just realized why I’ve not been losing weight . . .

The fam did some dining out at the Busy Bee Cafe this past month, as well. Good stuff.

Have a nice month, socialize, support small business and creative people, get in nature, cook something new, take a hike, create something, play some music, laugh with the family, stay joyful.

Remember, your words matter. Try and use them to educate, inspire, encourage and spark joy.

June 3–10 American Revolution Experience opening night Linebaugh Public Library (105 W. Vine St., Mon.–Thurs. 9 a.m.–8 p.m., Fri. and Sat. 9 a.m.–5 p.m.) hosts the American Revolution Experience, June 3–10. The exhibition includes display panels and interactive digital kiosks that use storytelling, illustration, technology, unique artifacts and primary accounts to connect modern audiences with the people and places that shaped the birth of our nation. To commemorate the premiere of the American Revolution Experience exhibit, there will be an Opening Night Celebration at 5 p.m. with guest speaker Dr. Amy Sayward, a professor of history at MTSU, entitled “Swamps, Swords, and Sovereignty: The Campaign for Independence.”

A reception will follow with Colonialstyle cookies from The Sweet Addiction.

Throughout the week, there will be children’s programs and activities, including a patriotic scavenger hunt, colonial games on the patio, and a Revolutionary Bingo game.

Friday Night Live On Friday, June 5, the Friday Night Live community concert series returns to Murfreesboro’s Public Square with The Piano Men. The Elton John/Billy Joel tribute will perform from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., staged in front of the Rutherford County Courthouse as part of Main Street Murfreesboro’s summer music lineup. Organizers of these free, family-friendly downtown events encourage local folks to bring lawn chairs, enjoy nearby dining, and shop locally downtown before the Friday evening shows start and the music, dancing and fun vibes begin. June 5 Instruments of Joy Benefit Concert On Friday, June 5, a group of Nashvillearea artists will use their music to serve musicians far beyond Tennessee. Land of Color, Jeremy Casella, and Cole Burkett are teaming up for a benefit concert in support of Instruments of Joy, a Tennessee-based nonprofit that provides quality musical instruments to musicians in need around the world. The concert will be held at Springhouse Worship and Arts Center in (14119 Old Nashville Hwy., Smyrna). Instruments of Joy has helped provide more than 1,500 quality musical instruments to musicians in 71 countries. Every ticket sold for this concert will help continue that work, and 100% of proceeds will be used to provide musical instruments for musicians in need.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Bravo Boro will debut its first outdoor theatrical production with A Midsummer Night’s Dream beginning June 5 at Hop Springs. Directed by Nicholas Buckley and Sky Roberts and produced by Tyler Tsoumbos, the production runs June 5–7 and June 12–14. Set in a moonlit forest where fairies meddle, lovers lose their way and actors stumble into chaos, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is widely regarded as one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays. Staged outdoors, the comedy aims to capture the atmosphere of a warm Tennessee summer evening beneath the stars. June 5–7 Secret Garden Party The Discovery Center will host its 34th Annual Secret Garden Party on Friday, June 5, at 7 p.m. at Belle Meadows Farm (6241 Browns Mill Rd., Lascassas), followed by the Secret Garden Tour on Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7. The annual events serve as a fundraiser supporting the organization’s educational programs. The garden party will include dining by Five Senses, live music, and both silent and live auctions.

The event will be presented with a “Cowboy Chic” theme. The Secret Garden Tour, June 6–7, will offer access to a selection of public and private gardens across Murfreesboro. Splash Out! Murfreesboro Parks and Rec and the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department present the next community Splash Out on Thursday, June 11, at Barfield Park (697 Veterans Pkwy.) from 1:30–3 p.m. This annual fun, free summer event creates an opportunity for kids to splash, dance and play in the water gushing from the hoses of Murfreesboro fire trucks. June 6 Free Fishing Day Free Fishing Day is always the Saturday of the first full week in June. On that day, anyone (resident or non-resident) of any age can fish free without a license in Tennessee’s public waters, agency-owned and operated lakes, and Tennessee State Parks. Free Fishing Week always follows Free Fishing Day in June, when children ages 15 and younger can fish for free all week in Tennessee.

June 6 Boat Day If you want to have a boat-load of fun while learning the importance of clean water, join the community on Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. for the 18th Annual Boat Day. Canoes and kayaks (and paddles!) are provided for this free event. Paddle on the water and play games on the shore of the Stones River at Jefferson Springs Recreation Area (7660 W. Jefferson Pk., Smyrna). Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. There is no cost to participate.

Relay for Life of Murfreesboro benefits the American Cancer Society. This is a vendor festival-style fundraising event with familyfriendly activities, live entertainment, survivor and caregiver activities, DJ, bounce houses, kid zone, vendors and food trucks.

June 19–21 Imperial Commissary Collectors Convention Founded in 2018, the IC Collectors Convention (ICCCon), Tennessee’s premier Sci-Fi fan and collectors event, returns to the Embassy Suites Hotel and Convention Center (1200 Conference Center Blvd., Murfreesboro) for its eighth edition June 19–21. Fans of vintage and modern toys, Star Wars, action figures, comics, collectibles, and all things sci-fi are invited to three full days of shopping, movie star appearances, panels, artist alleys and community celebrations. The event brings together collectors, vendors, artists, and enthusiasts in a family-friendly atmosphere focused on hobbyists. June 13 & 27 Revolutionary Rutherford exhibit Throughout the coming months, events commemorating America 250 will not only give insight into the nation’s two and a half centuries but also enlighten audiences about Tennessee’s and Rutherford County’s revolutionary history. The Revolutionary Rutherford traveling exhibit and America 250 Lecture Series explores how the Revolutionary War shaped and impacted what later became Rutherford County by highlighting the war’s legacy on local Native Americans, the impact of land grants in the region, and the preservation and commemoration of national and local history. The traveling exhibit and the lecture series will be at Linebaugh Public Library through July 13, with the lecture series taking place every other Saturday.

June 20 RC Cola–MoonPie Festival This wacky, annual all-ages event celebrates some of the South’s original fast-food items—an ice-cold RC Cola and a tasty MoonPie. Visitors from all over the world (there’s a “who traveled the furtherest” contest to prove it) will stream into the downtown Bell Buckle area for the RC Cola–MoonPie Festival to find plenty of music, cloggers, contests, MoonPie games, a colorful parade and more on Saturday, June 20, from 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Things kick off with 10-mile and 5K races on certified and scenic, but challenging, courses. MTSU’s Match Records Releases First Vinyl Record Featuring MTSU Student Artists Students in Middle Tennessee State University’s recording industry program have taken their work from the classroom to the turntable. Match Records, a multi-genre, student-run record label housed in the Scott Borchetta College of Media and Entertainment, released its first vinyl record during the Match Showcase on April 28, at Hop Springs in Murfreesboro.

The milestone marks a significant evolution for the label, which provides student creators with hands-on experience in marketing, branding, promotion, and distribution for student artists. The new vinyl release features current students and Match alumni working in a variety of genres from indie pop-rock to rap and everything in between.

“This release is an important milestone because it gives students the opportunity to take a project all the way into a professional physical format,” said recording industry professor Frank Dremel. “It moves beyond simply releasing music digitally.”

Unlike digital releases, producing a vinyl record introduces additional layers of complexity, from sequencing and packaging to manufacturing logistics and detailed crediting.

Students involved in the project say those challenges made the experience even more valuable.

“It’s proof that Match can operate beyond the usual scope of a student-run record label,” said Caleb Villatoro, Match Records treasurer and a graduate student in recording arts and technology. “Vinyl 14 * June 2026 * boropulse.com

It marked a shift from running events to building something tangible and lasting.”

The project mirrors real-world label operations, requiring coordination across teams, adherence to deadlines and attention to detail, all essential skills for careers in the industry.

Even in today’s digital-first landscape, Dremel said vinyl continues to hold cultural and commercial relevance.

“It reflects a desire for music to feel more tangible and personal, especially when presentation and collectability are part of the appeal,” he said.

That tangible connection resonates strongly with the student artists featured on the record.

“I’m super stoked to have some of my own music pressed onto vinyl,” said Match artist Kyelen Arora. “As someone who collects records, this is a real milestone for me.”

The vinyl release highlights the diversity of talent within MTSU’s student artist community, with selections curated to represent a cohesive yet varied sound.

Living From Scrap to Cash Recycle metal and cans at Murfreesboro’s Clark Iron & Metal Co.

by Bracken Mayo For decades, Clark Iron & Metal Co. has played a part in Murfreesboro’s industrial, business and environmental landscape, helping recycle everything from scrap steel and aluminum to copper wiring, appliances and discarded vehicles.

Located not far from the busy Church Street and Broad Street intersection, the longtime metal recycling company serves contractors, manufacturers, demolition crews, mechanics, farmers and everyday residents looking to responsibly dispose of metal materials while also earning a little money in the process. Rather than ending up in landfills, many of those materials are sorted, processed and shipped back into the manufacturing stream, where they can be reused in new products.

Even many of those passing nearby on the city’s streets on a regular basis may have no idea of the mountains of metals hidden from sight behind the Clark facility.

Loads of scrap metal are weighed before being added to the heap. Bring them your copper pipes and wiring, broken lawnmowers, aluminum cans, old metal outdoor furniture, steel, retired vehicles and other metal scrap and cash in your old junk and waste.

There’s also a small “for sale” yard where customers can browse for mower parts, engines, building materials, decorations, and odds and ends.

Clark Iron & Metal is part of the tradition of American scrapyards that help keep industry moving. Old farm equipment, damaged vehicles, construction debris, industrial leftovers and household appliances all become part of a cycle in which materials are reused and injected back into the industrial economy rather than being discarded. For many customers, the appeal is practical—cleaning up property, garages or job sites while receiving payment for recyclable metals. For others, it is about environmental stewardship and

keeping reusable metal materials out of dumps and waterways.

As Murfreesboro continues growing, the volume of construction, demolition and industrial activity throughout Rutherford County has also increased, making the recycling network increasingly important. Companies like Clark Iron & Metal help provide a local destination for those scrap metal materials.

Recycling cans at Clark Iron & Metal is simple.

Step 1 – Drink large amounts of your favorite re-

freshing canned beverage, or collect cans by the side of the road and from your friends and family.

Step 2 – Wash the cans a little bit. They don’t

have to be pristine, but Clark Iron does not accept metal that is caked with mud.

Step 3 – Take the cans to the Clark Iron &

Metal facility, located at 217 Hillard St., just off of Church Street near Cannonsburgh Village.

Step 4 – Look for the “Recycle Aluminum Cans Here” here sign on the right side of the main building.

Step 5 – If no other customers are using the

bin, empty all of your cans into the holding area.

Step 6 – If an employee is not already assisting you, ring the bell for service.

Step 7 – Stand back and watch the cans get

transported up the conveyor belt into the inside of the warehouse, where they will be weighed.

Step 8 – A Clark team member will hand you a receipt showing the weight of your cans.

Step 9 – Bring the receipt to Bubba at the main desk and accept your pay. Fun note: Clark seems to like keeping 50-cent pieces on hand and using them to pay out customers.

Step 10 – Reward yourself for your hard work.

The Savage Gulf area of Middle Tennessee contains lots of adventures to be had in nature. The sprawling 19,000 acres of canyons, woods, waterfalls, creeks, bluffs, campgrounds and wildlife remain a popular spot for hiking, camping and climbing.

Formerly under the South Cumberland State Park umbrella, Tennessee designated Savage Gulf as its own state park in 2022.

The park’s north trailhead, just off Tennessee Highway 56 in the Beersheba Springs community, between McMinnville and Altamont, gives visitors a way to see a couple of unique Savage Gulf features: Laurel Falls (of the Savage Gulf variety of course, and not the Smoky Mountains’ Laurel Falls, a popular point in its own right in that park) and the Great Stone Door.

Near a small rangers’ station that sits at the Savage Gulf North Trailhead area, a sign marks the entrance to the Laurel Falls Loop Trail. This sign actually measures the distance to the falls in yards, rather than miles, as many posted hiking trails do; it’s only 287 yards to the falls, according to the sign.

slabs of arranged rocks.

Within a matter of minutes, walkers arrive at a wooden overlook platform to view the 80-foot-tall Laurel Falls, named for the mountain laurel that blooms in the area.

The falls thundered following heavy May rainfall, the creek flowing powerfully along, making a cool sight in the thickly shaded but humid section of forest.

While the hillside is quite steep on the side of the waterfall that contains the overlook, if hikers were to cross the creek above the falls—which would likely require walking in water and getting feet wet—the bank on the opposite side appears gentle enough to descend to the base.

Or, traveling upstream from the falls a little ways reveals a good spot to get in the creek, splash and throw some stones.

A miniature waterfall feature on a smaller stream that empties into the main creek catches the attention of a visitor as the water gently pours and pours, no end in sight.

Continuing on the Laurel Falls Loop Trail leads to quite an incline on the way back up, but the entire round trip, approximately three-tenths of a mile, can be made quickly, a brief excursion for a cool payoff.

So, many hikers recommend embarking

upon both the Laurel Falls and Great Stone Door trails in one trip, even for beginninglevel hikers.

The Stone Door Trail, less than a mile itself, leads to a rocky overlook of hills and valleys, providing some spectacular views of the gulf.

A section of this trail is paved, the remainder is fairly flat, and the Great Stone Door destination is a fantastically special place to view the Tennessee landscape.

Plus, the Great Stone Door feature is split by a crag that contains approximately 132 stairs that leads down the narrow crevice in between the two large cliffs on each side.

From here, other trails offer further options for exploring Savage Gulf. But Laurel Falls and Great Stone Door offer enough adventure for some hiking parties.

Note: black bears have been spotted in the area recently.

So, an accurate description of the area could be “frogs and bears and lots of stairs.”

Aside from this scenic Laurel Falls and Great Stone Door excursion, the expansive Savage Gulf State Park offers four primary trail entrances at various points around the park’s edge to access this beautiful segment of Tennessee wilderness, near the towns of Altamont, Beersheba Springs, GruetliLaager and Pelham–visit them all!

And even if you have seen a portion of Savage Gulf in one season, going to that very place during a different time of year can look far different.

Murfreesboro Wrestler Aria Thephavong Wins Gold Medals at International Event in London

by Bobby Schneider Aria Thephavong, a 14-year-old wrestler from Murfreesboro, has been dominating competitions from local to international stages.

Across all competitions, she has earned first-place honors 38 times, including the last six consecutive Tennessee state championships in the weight classes she has competed in.

One of her most recent competitions was the Windsor Open, a highly acclaimed youth freestyle wrestling tournament in London that welcomes competitors from across the world. There, she won two gold medals: one in the boys 13U 41.6 kg weight class (92 pounds) and one in the girls 15U 38.5 kg (85 pounds) weight class.

“I was the lightest one, but still did my best and worked for a gold medal and got it,” Thephavong posted on her Instagram.

Being one of the smallest competitors on the mat is only added motivation for her, not an obstacle.

“It makes me happy because they’re in a whole different weight class and they still lost to me,” she said, regarding her win in the boys division, competing up a weight class.

grade, competing in AAU tournaments with the Blackman Youth Wrestling Club.

Throughout her journey in her wrestling career, family has played a key role in her development, specifically the training she does with her brother.

“Her brother is the one that trains her, and he pours his sweat and tears with her,” said Aria’s mother, Judy Thephavong.

“He’s the one pushing her and putting all his time into her.”

Seeing the hard work behind the scenes and all the success Thephavong has achieved has made her mother and the rest of her family very proud.

“It’s been a roller coaster of emotions, from heartbreak after tough losses to overwhelming pride after big wins,” the wrestler’s mother said. “Seeing her dedication and growth has made us extremely proud.”

After all of this, Thephavong has her eyes set on big goals for the future.

“I want to go to college and go to the Olympics,” she said.

With the end of this school year, her middle school wrestling career will come to a close. But this fall, Thephavong will begin wrestling at Blackman High School, looking to bring home more gold medals and state titles.

“I need a bank to help my business grow.”

Recent Rockvale grad leads family-friendly Robbery at the Rockvale Theater film from local director behind Wildman of Shaggy Creek

by Matthew Olson Middle Tennessee film director Jesse Edwards reunites with actor Brycen Patterson and others who have worked with them on their previous local film project for an upcoming mystery-comedy suitable for all ages.

Where The Wildman of Shaggy Creek led viewers on more of a suspenseful household viewing adventure, Edwards frames Robbery at the Rockvale Theater as lighter and more comedic.

Set largely inside a theater, the story plays as a whodunit centered on a robbery and a threatened school performance.

“It’s like Knives Out, but for kids, and it’s got a lot of elements of the Pink Panther in

it as well,” said Edwards while describing the new movie. “Both my older girls love mysteries, so . . . it’s got some Boxcar Children in there too. It’s like if you took those three movies, Boxcar Children, Pink Panther and Knives Out, and mixed them together, I think this is what you get.”

Edwards also said ’90s comedies like Richie Rich and George of the Jungle helped inspire the feel of the film’s effects.

Patterson, a Rutherford County resident and recent graduate of Rockvale High School who served as one of the leads in Robbery at the Rockvale Theater, said the film reminds of classic mystery movies inspired by Agatha Christie novels.

Patterson has high ambitions for a future in television and film. He got his start in musical theater, such as an experience playing the lead role of Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors, performed

by Rockvale High School at Spotlight Awards 2025 at TPAC. “That’s why I really liked this movie, especially because I got to sing, dance, and act in it, which is, you know, something that a lot of people don’t get to do,” Patterson told the Pulse. “I got to tie in what I love most, acting, but also the things I’ve learned from musical theater, like singing and dancing as well.”

Several composers contributed to the film’s soundtrack and score, with music licensed from publishing titan Warner Chappell used to enhance certain scenes.

Production ran with a primary crew of around 10, expanding to as many as 20 on heavy days like the shooting of the big dance sequence, and filming took place over 10 primary days with three additional pick-up days.

Patterson rounded up a group of fellow Rockvale students to come in as extras.

“My younger brother, Baylor, is at

Rockvale High School right now, and my two other friends, Piper and Reagan, just graduated with me from Rockvale,” he said. “Another one of my friends was an extra in it; she just graduated, and then my girlfriend was an extra in it. She just graduated, so yeah, there’s a lot of Rockvale alum.”

Actors Ayla Bullington, David Dupre, Josh Futcher and Allee Sutton Hethcoat all return from The Wildman of Shaggy Creek to join the cast of Robbery at the Rockvale Theater.

The Packard Playhouse in Columbia served as the main theater location, with additional scenes filmed in various Middle Tennessee locations in Spring Hill, Franklin and Green Hills, with a pivotal insert shot in Edwards’ garage in Brentwood.

Robbery at the Rockvale Theater will premiere at the Franklin Theater on Sunday, June 28, with three showings at 12, 3 and 7 p.m. Because The Wildman of Shaggy Creek sold out at its premiere last year, organizers decided to add a third showing for the new film this year. Milk produced at MTSU Dairy Farm available at various area locations

by Bobby Schneider middle tennessee state university is home to one of the largest dairy production operations in the Middle Tennessee area. The MTSU Creamery provides all the milk found on the school’s campus as well as milk for several distributors in Murfreesboro.

Local food establishments like Brass Horn Coffee Shop and Hattie Jane’s Creamery, as well as area grocery stores like JR’s Foodland offer milk produced by the MTSU Creamery. It is also sold at the Murfreesboro Saturday Market held on the Murfreesboro Public Square every Saturday morning, May through October.

“They sell pints, half gallons and gallons of milk,” said Jessica Carter, director of the MTSU School of Agriculture.

Assistant Farm Director Dalton Hughes says the MTSU Creamery—located on Guy James Road a few miles east of the main university campus—produces roughly 4,000 pounds of milk on a day-to-day basis.

MTSU’s milk is widely recognized by the campus community for its quality and taste—so much so that it has won numerous accolades, including a blue ribbon from the Tennessee Dairy Processors and a long standing “best in show” streak for their chocolate milk.

The MTSU Dairy Farm, where all of the milk is produced, offers students at MTSU a chance to gain valuable experience helping with the entire process of milk production.

“We have classes that come out here, sometimes on more than a once-a-day basis,” Carter said.

Carter speaks highly of the students who work on the farm, praising the work ethic she sees from them.

“Not everybody is willing to get up and milk cows at five in the morning,” Carter said.

usy Bee Cafe has recently relocated from its original home on East Jefferson Pike in downtown Lascassas, Tennessee, to a larger space nearby on Highway 96, within the large white house that sits in front of Lascassas Self Storage. There, proprietor Stacey Blansett continues the traditions of delicious sandwiches, chicken salad and other lunch items, Southern hospitality and decadent desserts.

Since the move, Busy Bee has added to its already popular offerings pizza, Sunday brunch, dinner service, a larger thrift and local goods area and more.

The local cafe aims for comfort and friendliness, and wants guests to sense a welcoming, homey vibe.

“We just want you to feel like you’ve walked in your granny’s house for a bite to eat,” Blansett said. “We want to be part of Lascassas for years to come, where families can make memories and fellowship with their community.”

“We grew so quickly we had to find a bigger location,” Blansett said.

In addition to the excellent menu—which stands on its own—and expanded operating hours, the new space also offers a surprisingly large upstairs thrift area packed with assorted treasures, various manner of antiques, decor, toys, dishes, books and oddities.

The restaurant’s fare covers a broad range of American comfort food territory—burgers, salads, wings, and sandwiches like Stacey’s chicken salad sandwich, which piles a signature chicken salad mixture containing grapes, apples and pecans onto Texas toast.

“The best chicken salad!” reported customer Kimberly Honeycutt.

The Whole Hive Panini—a flavorful stack of ham, turkey, salami, pepperoni, provolone and a peppery garlic Parmesan sauce pressed between slices of sourdough bread—makes a fantastic sandwich delivering a really pleasant blend of flavors: just a little spice, just a little garlic, Swiss cheese, a lot of meat; there’s a lot going on in that sandwich.

“I always get their Whole Hive and am never disappointed,” another pleased patron, Devron Brannen, posted after a Busy Bee visit.

Pizzas emerge from the kitchen with thin, but fluffy crusts, just a little puffier than New York-style pies. The pizzas are quite good, maybe with a little more of a section of crust with no toppings on the outer rim than some would prefer, but the crust is soft and good to dip in some ranch or sauce.

Bo’s Bar-Bee-Q pizza combines barbecue chicken, bacon and red onion over barbecue sauce while the Buffalo chicken pizza comes loaded with diced Buffalo chicken, cheese and bacon atop a white sauce base. Another specialty pie, the Philly cheesesteak pizza, stacks steak, peppers and onions onto a white base.

The cafe’s ranch dressing deserves a mention—thick, creamy and packed with flavor.

Try the ranch on the pizza, wings, fries or a salad. A refreshing fruit tea pairs well with just about anything.

One appetizer selection, the Buffalo chicken dip, arrives cold, rather than bubbling hot like many restaurant versions, served with some

standard tortilla chips. Though for those wanting to try the creamy, cheesy concoction hot, it also comes served on a pressed panini.

Busy Bee’s chicken tenders, mac and cheese, mini corn dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches and fries help make the place popular for younger diners as well, with kids’ meals served in small cardboard boxes.

The cafe definitely strives for a welcoming atmosphere for those of all ages. Upstairs, in addition to the thrift and antique areas, visitors find an entire “kids zone” family dining area complete with games, toys and a small kid-sized table and chairs, as well as adultsized dining tables. A baby gate guards the door to this room, designed to help parents relax over their meal and conversion while children play safely within.

“Thoughtfully kid-friendly,” Bettina Reed said. “This place is a true gem.”

Meanwhile, downstairs ’80s country music videos play on the television while locals visit. It’s the kind of place where a spontaneous community “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” singalong might break out at any moment.

If you don’t already know any of the residents of beautiful Lascassas before entering Busy Bee, you likely will before leaving.

For dinner, served 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, the restaurant now serves evening supper plates including meatloaf with brown sugar ketchup glaze, Cajun chicken pasta tossed in creamy Alfredo sauce, and country fried pork tenderloin smothered in brown gravy, among other specials.

The Sunday brunch menu has developed a following of its own.

The honey pepper chicken and waffles places crispy chicken tenders atop a cornbread waffle finished with strawberry butter and drizzled with a honey pepper glaze.

Other brunch offerings include quiche, avocado toast with house-made lemon ricotta, sausage balls, candied bacon deviled eggs, and French toast made using homemade sourdough bread.

Chef Shashank Dixit helps oversee the expanding Busy Bee kitchen operations.

“The Lord has blessed our journey and placed the exact people we needed in our path to be able to provide this amazing community with what they need,” Blansett said.

For dessert, Busy Bee serves a rotating

assortment of indulgent cheesecakes, made right down the road by Couture’s Kitchen, with individual slices already packed into to-go containers near the register, tempting diners on the way out even if they are too full at the moment for dessert. Rotating cheesecake flavors may include turtle, Oreo, Butterfinger, banana pudding, and pecan caramel varieties.

Ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes and floats add to the sweetness.

The service consistently earns strong praise, many emphasizing not just friendliness, but genuine warmth.

“You can just tell it’s run by wholesome people. I was greeted upon entry. Not a quick hey, but an intentional ‘hello’,” said Kristen Roden. “Thanks for serving us more than just delicious food but serving us like we matter.”

Some find the prices slightly higher than expected for a rural cafe (one that uses plastic cutlery), though the food is from-scratch with some soul.

Founded by Louisiana native Adam Lathan, The Gumbo Bros specializes in Cajun and Creole favorites including chicken and sausage gumbo, crawfish étouffée, red beans and rice, po’ boys, boudin balls, wings, cheesecake, alligator bites, and seafood dishes inspired by New Orleans cooking.

“I’m excited to lead operations and support boaters on Percy Priest Lake,” said Travis Basom, operating partner at TowBoatUS Percy Priest and Rob’s nephew.

Murfreesboro resident and Air Force veteran Charles Pickett has launched YourTravel Advisor, a boutique travel-planning agency focused on personalized vacation services for Middle Tennessee travelers.

Founded in May 2026, the agency specializes in cruises, luxury travel, family vacations, adult getaways and all-inclusive resort packages. Pickett says the business is designed to offer a concierge-style alternative to online booking sites by providing customized planning assistance and insider travel guidance.

“Travel should feel exciting, not over-

The Murfreesboro Buc-ee’s location is expected to open in fall 2026.

The City of Murfreesboro continues to progress with plans for its first police precinct. This will be a separate location from the current police department headquarters, which opened in 2018 on Highland Avenue. If approved, the new

Drive-thru coffee chain The Human Bean will officially open its first Murfreesboro location on June 10 at 1803 Memorial Blvd.

The new location is locally owned and operated by Scott and Anita Findlay, who say they are excited to bring the company’s customer-focused approach and specialty coffee drinks to Rutherford County.

The Oregon-based chain specializes in espresso drinks, blended coffees, Bright Energy beverages, smoothies, teas and breakfast items. Signature menu items include the Snowy Mocha, Java Chip Granita and Bright Energy drinks made with caffeine sourced from green coffee beans. Customers also receive the company’s trademark chocolate-covered espresso bean with many drinks.

“The bean on top is a little thank-you for driving through, because The Human Bean believes in making even the smallest of exchanges memorable, kind, and sincere,” Scott Findlay said.

The Murfreesboro City Council has approved a purchase and sale agreement for 8.62 acres of city‑owned land along Medical Center Parkway for the development of a large event venue and restaurant. Hackberry 5 Properties, operated by Shawn and Christy Hackinson of The Alley on Main and One of Nineteen Cocktails, is the developer for this project.

The property is part of a larger 20.12‑acre tract of unimproved land, and was previously considered for development for the Notes Live amphitheater. The Hackinson’s proposal for the space will include multiple buildings.

A restaurant will serve wood-fired pizzas in addition to some of the pastas, steaks and other offerings found at The Alley, they say.

One of the wedding venues will be large enough for 500 guests, according to initial plans, and the other will accommodate up to 200 guests. Plans for the event venues include 7,000 to 10,000 square feet of outdoor green space with direct access to the Murfreesboro Greenway and views of the Stones River.

Under the proposed agreement, the land would be sold for $6 per square foot, totaling $2,252,923, payable at closing.

Including impact fees and annual recurring property and sales taxes, the city expects the project to generate nearly $12 million in revenue for the local government over 20 years.

The agreement requires Hackberry 5 Properties to secure all zoning, site plan, design, and building approvals at its own expense. No incentives, tax abatements, or fee waivers are included. The City of Murfreesboro will retain the right to repurchase the property at the original sale price if the developer fails to begin site work within 180 days of closing or vertical construction within one year, according to terms of the agreement. Closing must occur no later than March 11, 2027.

Support Those Who Take on the Responsibility of Home Schooling As a society we talk about parents who do not take responsibility or accountability for their children. Teachers complain about uninvolved, irresponsible parents.

Christians complain about parents who allow their children to spend too much time on screens, video games and social media. What many fail to recognize is that there is actually an awakening happening. Home schooling is exploding. Many young couples are choosing having a family, home schooling and the restitution of the family unit over the lies they have been fed for decades.

This is exactly what many Christian ministers have been pounding the pulpit about for decades, but what are they doing to support those

families? As Christians, we are the church, and we should be focused on prioritizing supporting families who have decided to reclaim what God intended for the family unit. This article is a compilation of advice given to me throughout our 23-year homeschooling journey by Christians who valued and understood the biblical blessing of parents seeking God’s will in their families. It also focuses on needs I have observed firsthand throughout the years of providing home school consultations.

Free YOUR Children is a Christian ministry; therefore, the content of this article will be written from a Christian perspective.

Husbands: Aside from your relation-

ship with God, your relationship with your spouse should be paramount. It has often been said that the most important thing a man can do for his children is to love their mother. If you are a home-schooling father reading this article, the sacrifices you are making that allow your wife to stay at home, teach and raise your children will be rewarded, but remember, your responsibility to your family doesn’t end at bringing home a paycheck. Spend time with your wife. Prioritize alone time with her which allows you to reconnect and gives your wife an opportunity to recharge.

Be involved in your children’s education by being engaged and helping when you can. Take them to events, participate, and be present. Check in with your wife to see how you can serve her. You are commanded to love your wife as Christ loved the church. You are called to be the spiritual leader in your home. Make praying and Bible study a priority with your family. Remember: A family that prays together stays together.

Grandparents and in-laws, be proud of the parents in your family who have chosen to homeschool their children. Instead of being a stumbling block, lift them up! Encourage them with affirming words. Offer to help with household chores. Cook them a meal. Offer to take their children to extracurricular activities. Home schooling is a full-time job and these moms and dads are selflessly choosing to put their children and their discipleship first.

Far too often I hear families say their extended family doesn’t agree with their home-schooling choices. They are constantly looking for a reason to tell them to “put their kids back in school.”

If the mom is tired, that is their default response. If the house is in disarray, that is the advice doled out. When you home school, the house is utilized 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

typically feel “behind” in the housekeeping department. That’s not a complaint. It is a reality.

Family members, instead of being critical, HELP THEM OUT. They spend an exorbitant amount of time and money cooking and cleaning up three meals a day, seven days a week, plus snacks.

Family members can cook them a meal, buy them a meal, or bring groceries. BE SUPPORTIVE. Stop criticizing and condemning parents who are choosing to disciple their own children. Your desire as a parent should be to help and encourage your adult children to be the parents they are called to be. Focus on being an active, engaged grandparent.

So where does the church fit into this equation? Churches should be focusing on the biblical roles of husband and wives. If your church refuses to address these topics, I would suggest finding a new church. Does your church support your decision to home-school? Do they address and understand the damage that is being done to our nation’s children within the government school system? Churches should be the thermostat of the community. If they have a church building that is not utilized throughout the week are they allowing home-schooling families to meet there? Are any church members willing to volunteer within the home school community? Oftentimes home-school moms may have a doctor’s appointment or need childcare for a short time.

Churches could help in this arena.

There are likely church members who have specific talents that could be of benefit. You may have someone in the church who could teach music lessons, may have a degree in a subject they could teach, or specialized skills the children in the church could benefit from learning. If there is a legitimate monetary issue that doesn’t allow for home schooling (and some do exist), the church should provide resources.

The church could offer financial classes to educate parents on how to wisely and biblically utilize their finances.

If churches care about the family, the souls of the children in their congregations, and the discipling of the future generations, then their missions outreach should be making sure parents in their congregation have the means to disciple their own children. I’m not talking about “private Christian schools” either. Those often follow the same model as the public school system with some Bible thrown in. I’m talking about churches making sure parents in their congregations have the support needed (yes, even financial) to teach and train their own children as the Bible instructs.

To the mothers reading this who are home-schooling or considering home-schooling, your biggest mission field is within the walls of your own home.

Utilize the resources available to you and ask for help. Prioritize your relationship with Jesus.

Make your relationship with your spouse a priority. Strong families are intact families. Communicate your needs to your spouse and allow him to do the same. Schedule regular times to discuss finances and family business. Remember that you are in the home on a daily basis with the children but your spouse isn’t and you will need to communicate effectively in order to be on the same page.

Prioritize your health. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Be a wise steward of your time and money. Your spouse should see the fruits of your labor. Make your family the priority. Your family, life and home-schooling journey will constantly change. Don’t be afraid to reevaluate and make changes where necessary. The joy is in the journey—enjoy it!

Data Centers Are Coming to Middle Tennessee: On What Terms?

Part 1 of an ongoing series on data centers, energy, and the AI build-out in Middle Tennessee data centers will soon challenge us, as a community, to separate fear from fact. These facilities are arriving across Tennessee, driven by massive AI investment, whether we like it or not.

The issue, then, is not if data centers are coming, but under what conditions. Jon Hoscheit, the Chief Technical Officer for Data Suites Murfreesboro, a local data center, and chair of the Murfreesboro Technology Council, told me in 2024 that AI would drive the next wave and that local data centers would be the delivery point. He was right.

In an article published earlier in 2026, Hoscheit describes Data Suites as serving customers since 2016 and operating with 50 kilowatts or more of power per rack. To translate that: a data center is organized into “racks,” metal frames about the size of a refrigerator that hold many servers.

The electricity a rack uses determines what kind of work it can do. A rack handling an email and file storage system might use 5 to 10 kilowatts. A rack running AI can use 50 kilowatts or more, roughly the continuous demand of 40 average homes, through a single cabinet. Data Suites is now in that AI-capable tier, built for the kind of intense computing behind modern AI. Not all data centers are the same.

This is where understanding the terms becomes essential, and where most national coverage blurs distinctions. The headlines usually focus on one type of facility: “hyperscale” campuses in places like Northern Virginia, Phoenix and Dallas. These are massive complexes owned by a single company, using as much power as a small city, enough to power 100,000 homes, and consuming hundreds of millions of gallons of water each year. In contrast, “edge” data centers, like those being built closer to where people live, support AI computing that benefits from proximity. When you ask an AI agent a question, the answer travels from your phone to a data center and back; the farther away the data center is, the longer it takes.

For applications that need instant responses, edge centers, which are smaller and more numerous, are more effective.

Hoscheit argues that this edge model will become a bigger part of the build-out than headlines suggest, and that Middle Tennessee is well positioned for it.

“Edge colocation isn’t a compromise,” he writes. “It’s the right architecture for most of what AI is going to do over the next decade.”

A small edge facility with modern cooling and reasonable power use is very different from a hyperscale campus, which demands enormous power and water resources and is often built in regions already facing water shortages. Simply hearing that “a data center is coming to town” doesn’t reveal much until we know what type it is, how much power it will consume, and how it is cooled.

Northern Virginia could not stop the data center boom, but the backlash there changed the rules for where centers can be built, creating new protections for people.

Tennessee passed its own law signed by Governor Lee on May 7, requiring large data centers to pay for their own infrastructure instead of passing the cost to current ratepayers. The debate was never just about saying yes or no. It was about the details: who pays, what information is shared, how the centers are cooled, and what happens if rules are violated.

Over the coming months this series will explore the variables worth spending our energy on. How data centers use water.

What our power grid is facing. What the troubled xAI project in Memphis shows about an operator left unaccountable.

How to read an environmental claim when the operator says one thing and the evidence says another, and finally, the practical questions worth asking when a developer files plans. The expansion of data centers has already been decided, but the details have not. That is where we should focus our attention.

First Rounders Carnell Tate, Keldric Faulk Should Make Impact for the Titans The Train Daddy is back with sports news, life lessons and politically incorrect talk. All aboard!

It’s summertime and before we know it, a new football season will be kicking off in Tennessee for one last ride in Old Nissan. The Titans just wrapped up the 2026 NFL Draft with eight selections, so let’s talk Titans!

In Round 1 the Titans didn’t make one pick, but got to take two players in the first round. Cam Ward was a happy, happy man after the Titans drafted the top receiver in this class, Carnell Tate.

Tate was the top receiving prospect for a reason. He is a reliable, talented receiver and had a big part in Ohio State’s success and national champi-

onship run in 2024. Sure, this pick shocked some. Many fans in Tennessee had Love in mind. After the Cardinals stupidly picked Jeremiyah Love—being a team with low-ceiling quarterbacks—it didn’t really add up.

Did I want Love to become a Titan?

I would be lying if I told you no. The idea of Cam and Love had me hyped up. But as talented as Love is, I highly doubt he makes the selection worth it for Arizona. Love recently inked his name to the contract, and it instantly gives him the most guaranteed money to a running back in league history at $53 million. Love is the highest drafted RB since the Giants used the second pick in the 2018 draft on Barkley.

Positional drafting matters, and it’s why you hear many experts continually telling us you never draft a running back in the first round. It’s not a knock on Love. Dude’s a 100% stud, but even if he plays like a top 5 back in 2026, many would argue it still wouldn’t validate the pick.

It certainly makes me feel better about Carnell Tate’s 4-year, fully guaranteed contract worth around $51 million.

Tate has good size and, while he isn’t going to burn you with top speed, he can dominate defenders with his tracking ability, elite body control and massive hands.

Dude has bigger hands than Julio Jones; it’s a very small group of pass catchers with hands measuring over 10 inches. It gives him a catch radius advantage and a lack of dropped balls and he consistently wins those contested balls.

I saw a few people saying the Titans drafted a dude at four who wasn’t even the best receiver on his team. If you know ball then you know Tate’s Ohio State teammate Jeremiah Smith is different; Smith may end up being one of the greatest receiving prospects the league has ever seen next draft. That doesn’t take away from the fact that Tate was the best prospect in this 2026 class and has more than enough potential to offer the Titans. I expect Tate will have between 750–1,200 receiving yards this season, and that may be enough to get the Offensive Rookie of the Year award over Fernando Mendoza or J-Love.

Just when I thought opening night of the draft was over, the Titans traded with the Bills and drafted a 6-foot-5, 275-pound power rusher off the edge. The Titans gave up a little capital to make this happen, but not much.

They gave up picks 35, 66 and 101 in exchange for 31, 69 and 165, and they got the dude they wanted by wiggling around. Keldric Faulk still has some growing to do as a player, but Faulk, one of the youngest players in this draft at 20 years old, has game-changing potential and, now, one of the best defenders in Jeff Simmons 40 * June 2026 * boropulse.com

and defensive-minded coaches in Saleh to get the best out of him.

He is a big, long, fast and violent player who fits this new-look defense perfectly, unlike former Titan heavyweight T’Von Sweat.

Faulk was a player out of Auburn who few expected to be available near the end of the first round, and I love the aggression Titans’ GM Mike Borgonzi showed in trading up and landing him.

With the next pick it became clear as ever this is Coach Saleh’s team. The defensive-minded head coach got his linebacker, and they once again traded up to make it happen. Borgonzi was cooking.

The Titans selected Anthony Hill Jr. out of Texas, a former 5-star recruit in the Texas high school system. There are nothing but positive things to say about this player. He had outstanding collegiate stats and posted a 4.5-second 40-yard dash at the combine. The 6-foot-2, 238-pound linebacker also recorded a 37-inch vertical jump, logging in the second-best athleticism score of all linebackers.

There probably isn’t a better situation in the league for a young linebacker than to be wanted by Coach Saleh, who has a proven track record of coaching up talent at the position. Hill is a true three-down linebacker who excels in pass coverage. He is a strong blitzer, and has the speed to pursue runners sideline to sideline. I have this overwhelming feeling he may end up being the best selection of this draft and be a serious contender for defensive rookie of the year.

All of these first three draft selections should be immediate impact players as rookies. Sure, these moves created a gap of talent between the second- and fifth-round picks, but it doesn’t mean these last five players don’t offer upside. With the 142nd overall pick the Titans selected Fernando Carmona, an OG out of Arkansas. He certainly will get the opportunity on a Titans line that still has question marks.

With the 165th overall pick the Titans selected Nick Singleton, a

running back out of Penn State.

I like this selection! He is an explosive dual-threat back with the ability to pass-protect. The full package! Nick is a powerful player who, while at Penn State, broke many of Saquon Barkley’s weight room records from back squats to bench press. Singleton is that dude. He runs with power, vision and can turn nothing into points from anywhere on the field. Many believe Singleton will potentially take over the Titans’ RB room as a rookie, and that’s saying something with Pollard and Spears as a pretty good existing one/two punch.

With the 184th overall pick the Titans selected Jackie Marshall, a DT out of Baylor whom I would imagine becomes a reserve player.

He has some studs to learn from, though.

Later in the sixth round, with the 194th overall pick, the Titans selected Pat Coogan, a center out of Indiana. The 6-foot-5, 300-plus-pound national champion is ready to make his mark with Tennessee. Pat brings experience and a championship pedigree. Pat is a stout blocker; I really hope they find Cam Ward’s guy soon after releasing Cushenberry this offseason. Pat certainly will get the opportunity.

With the Titans’ final draft selection and the 225th pick the team selected Jaren Kanak, a tight-end out of Oklahoma.

I am intrigued! Dude played linebacker for three seasons before transitioning to tight end his senior year. He had a big enough impact—he was named third-team All-Conference in the mighty SEC, catching 44 balls for over 500 yards. I imagine he is the perfect player for “Bones” Fassel to notice and throw out on special teams—a headhunter kind of player!

I am excited for year two of Cam Ward and this new coaching staff. One more season at Old Nissan and then that new $2 billionplus stadium is open for business.

Quiet the Need to Control Observing children is remarkable.

They have genuine curiosity, playfulness, hesitation, noticing, intuition. Not the carefully crafted, tainted, “politically correct” responses that adults tend to learn. They are pure and innocent in nature. If allowed, they will say what is on their mind, with no filter. They also need guidance to understand what they are feeling until they can fully develop and know the difference between emotions, feelings and reality.

Now, observing the mature and retired generation you see similar qualities. These adults notice more, tend to say what they think without caring if someone agrees or disagrees with them. They think about playing more and enjoying their time. They focus on what they want to do versus what they think they have to do.

“Control is never achieved when sought after directly; it is the surprising result of letting go.” — James Arthur Ray Most of life happens in between these two stages, yet we are conditioned to treat it like a “destination waiting room” where there are doors we want to go into at some future point and we label them “success,” “security,” “retirement,” “happiness” or even “enough.”

As children, we naturally trust the process. We don’t question whether we are growing. We don’t wake up at 6 a.m. wondering if we’re behind in life. We play, imagine, and trust that tomorrow will come, without fear, worry or feelings of inadequacy.

Somewhere along the way, curiosity gets replaced by measurement. We start asking ourselves: Am I successful enough? Am I productive enough? Am I earning enough? Am I attractive enough? The result of this thinking is we spend decades living in a state of becoming rather than being.

“It’s funny, in a human kind of way, how we can convince ourselves that we’re in control at the very moment we are beginning to lose it.” — William Moyers I saw a child ill at the age of 13 who was hospitalized for six weeks. During all of the things he battled, all he thought about was getting out of there and racing his motorcycle. He even had his toy motorcycles with him and posters on the walls. And that’s exactly what he did the minute he was well enough. Then I saw that same child as a grown man become ill and hospitalized for five weeks. He had enough to deal with trying to get well, but I saw how he battled the adult issues of keeping his business running, paying the bills and keeping up with life.

I also saw a couple of retired people who simply thought about what adventure they were going to do today. Would they play golf, swim, see friends

or grandchildren? They weren’t focused on things that caused stress. I realized there is a huge gap between being a child of curiosity and innocence to a retired adult full of anticipation for what they could do with their time.

It is the garden of life. Children plant the seeds.

Retirees enjoy the harvest. The middle years are spent tending, watering, pruning and trusting growth that can’t yet be seen.

“True calm begins when you realize that control is an illusion, and surrender is freedom.” — Unknown So how do we “quiet the need to control” a situation, event or even another person? It’s great to be organized, have a plan or goals that propel us forward.

It’s also great to be aware that you cannot control everything that happens even with the best intentions or plans. No matter where you are right now in life, you can adopt a few thought patterns to shift your focus. Here are a few ideas to bridge the gap.

Replace “What’s Next” with “What’s Here”:

Most of our stress comes from anticipating some future that hasn’t even happened. Instead of constantly asking “what’s next” or “what if ”, ask “what is this season of my life trying to teach me?” Life unfolds in moments and chapters, not checklists.

Insurance Agent, Broker, Advisor, Oh My!

on the differences between financial professionals, or about what type of advisor may be appropriate for their needs. The term “advisor” is not uniformly regulated and may be used by individuals with varying licenses, registrations and qualifications.

Most people who hear the term “financial advisor” assume that the person holds a securities license. However, many insurance agents will call themselves financial advisors or wealth advisors.

Those who don’t hold any license at all could still potentially use the term because they’ve read a few books or feel they are good with money.

It is important for individuals to understand the scope of services, licensing, and compensation structures of the financial professional with whom they work. In this article, I’ll discuss the most common scenarios, the questions you may want to ask, and the research you should consider.

Those who hold a Series 65 license have fiduciary responsibilities and typically work for a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) firm. They are known as Investment Advisor Representatives. (If someone holds a Series 7 and a Series 66 and is registered with both a broker/dealer and an RIA, they are considered dual-registered.)

A fiduciary is legally required to put the client’s interests ahead of their own. Fiduciaries typically operate under a fee-for-service model, where the client pays directly—either as a flat fee or as a percentage of assets under management. For example, this could be an annual $3,500 fee, paid monthly or quarterly, or a percentage of assets held in a brokerage or retirement account.

An Investment Advisor Representative may be appropriate for individuals seeking ongoing financial planning and investment management services, depending on their specific needs, objectives, and financial circumstances.

This may include cash flow and budgeting, risk management and insurance planning, investment and portfolio management, tax planning, retirement planning, and estate planning.

Life Insurance License Someone who is licensed only as an insurance agent should, in my opinion, simply use that title. It provides a clear understanding of who they are and what services they can provide. Confusion occurs when an insurance-only agent uses titles such as financial professional, financial advisor, or wealth advisor—terms that may lead you to believe they can offer comprehensive solutions.

Insurance agents can offer life insurance, annuities, and basic guidance related to insurance planning.

Insurance agents may discuss planning concepts incidentally, but cannot hold themselves out as providing fee-based investment advisory services unless properly registered.

A life insurance agent can be the right choice if protection is your primary goal. However, it’s important to understand that they are compensated by the insurance company in the form of a commission.

Compensation structures vary, and individuals should understand how their financial professional is compensated and any associated conflicts of interest.

Generally, a person with a brokerage license can offer securities such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds. They have access to investment products and can assist with retirement accounts. They can also offer variable annuities and mutual funds and typically hold a Series 6 or Series 7 license.

Registered Representatives can provide financial advice, execute trades and implement investment strategies—capabilities that an insurance-only agent does not have. They are generally compensated through commissions for selling products such as mutual funds or for buying and selling stocks. If they also hold a Series 66 or 65 and are affiliated with a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA), they can act as an Investment Advisor Representative as well.

How Can I Tell?

The first step is to ask questions. Here are a few to start with: “How are you compensated?”

“Are you acting as a fiduciary at all times?”

“What areas do you not advise on?”

“Who coordinates my tax, insurance and investment strategies?”

Each type of financial professional—insurance agent, registered representative, or investment adviser—serves a different role. The appropriate choice depends on an individual’s financial goals, preferences, and the scope of services needed.

Both commission-based and fee-based compensation arrangements have different cost structures, services, and potential conflicts of interest. Individuals should evaluate these factors when selecting a financial professional.

We’ve all heard the phrase “trust, but verify.” Be sure to look up the individual and confirm their licenses. Insurance agents can be verified through your state’s insurance commission—search your state’s website using the person’s name.
