We have survived another year . . . “thrived another year,” I should say!

Revisiting last year’s resolutions: mine were to boost sales by 15%, visit a new restaurant each month, hike a new trail each month, make my sons watch a classic movie with the family once a month, burn 8 pounds of body fat, see a 35% increase in joy, tripling of gratitude and peace up six units.

Close enough. Pressing on.

As you recall, part of our 2025 cooking plans included butter chicken. That was a smashing success.

Bracken Jr.’s butter chicken and naan have been straight-up fire this past year. That’s become a big part of our family’s life. Fantastic. I have to give a shout-out to Sarah’s Thanksgiving gooey pumpkin squares as well, and all of her fine soups.

Next on Junior’s chef list: a biryani.

My cooking list includes a massaman curry; I have to try the classic Elvis toasted peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich sometime when I need a rich calorie load, a Jamaican-style yellow curry, and perhaps we’ll even tackle some croissant-making sometime.

Kitchen goals.

Otherwise in 2025 we stayed pretty active, kept the Pulse pulsing along, caught some catfish, hiked some beautiful places, played some mini golf, worked hard and laughed a lot.

I have been blessed to have tried some delicious cheeses—asiago, fontina, gruyere, Havarti and many others.

There are so many more out there, and I resolve that my quest to try the fine cheeses of the world shall lead me to blue stilton, camembert, brunost, emmental and roquefort.

In 2026, I’ll continue pushing that joyfulness up, lock in on those same goals from 2025, explore some new places, continue working on burning a few pounds while keeping strength up, keep loading up on fruits and vegetables and natural things, and mainly spend some quality time with each member of my family, and every group combination therein.

You never know when it’s your last chance to see someone, to go somewhere, to experience something.

Tell your loved ones what you want to say to them.

Let’s make the most of the time and health that we have. Enjoy it. Nothing’s guaranteed to happen again.

There will be a lot of crawling over rocks and mud. This adventure is not for your casual outdoorsman; upper body strength and balance is necessary in all wild caves. Meet at the Wilderness Station (401 Volunteer Rd.). Transportation and all equipment are provided. Ages 10 and up are welcome.

Jan. 2 & 16 LEGO Jr. Club at the TEC Get creative with bricks at the LEGO Jr. Club at the Technology Engagement Center (306 Minerva Dr.) on Friday, Jan. 2 and Friday, Jan. 16, from 3–5 p.m. This monthly club offers builders a fun-filled afternoon of imagination, construction and building challenges designed to let kids showcase their skills. This session, held the first Friday of each month, is geared toward builders ages 5–8. This program is free and open to the public. Jan. 10 Sewing Machine Orientation at the TEC

Jan. 3 MTAM Polar Bear Ride Kick off the year with the 2026 Polar Bear group ride event, hosted by Wes Wooldridge and Mid Tenn American Muscle at the Murfreesboro IHOP (1728 Old Fort Pkwy.) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3. Enjoy breakfast and take a nice, local, couple-hour-long cruise (destination TBA at breakfast). Bring your classic car or daily driver and invite any friends or family to join along. Jan. 7 Wine-Making Class Join Prohibition Home Brewing and Tennessee Wedding Wines for a wine-making class at Hop Springs (6790 John Bragg Hwy.) on Wednesday, Jan. 7, from 5:30–7 p.m. Pick your wine (20-plus varietals), pick your bottle (green, clear or blue) and pick your shrink cap color. This is a 3–session class. It is a hands-on instructional at a local facility with beverages, light appetizers and wine sampling included. Sessions will average 60–90 minutes of class and processing time. You will leave with an average of 25–30 bottles that you created. The class cost is $375 which allows a student with one guest. Additional guests may join for $50.

Jan. 30–Feb. 1 HackMT Hack-a-thon HackMT 2026 is an annual hack-a-thon and project expo hosted by the Middle Tennessee State University Department of Computer Science beginning on Friday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. and ending at noon on Sunday, Feb. 1. The purpose of the event is to gather software developers, visual designers, programmers and computer and data science students from local universities and professionals from local industries to form teams to invent new web platforms, mobile apps, and electronic gadgets over the space of 36 uninterrupted, high-intensity hours. The annual event should be an excellent opportunity to learn new things, hone skills, and interact with students from MTSU and other universities as well as industry professionals. Tuesdays Sight Word Snack Attack The Sight Word Snack Attack will be held at Smyrna Public Library (400 Enon Springs Rd. W.) on Tuesdays at 3:15 p.m. Sight Word Snack Attack is a child-focused but all-ages program that includes a snack, water, and a round of Sight Word Bingo.

Participants can choose from a variety of fun sight-word games to play, such as Tales to Tails. Sight words are common words that kids recognize instantly without sounding them out. Recognizing words by sight helps kids become faster, more fluent readers.

Middle Tennessee State University will put the spotlight on the low brass on Sunday, Feb. 1, with a full afternoon of trombone-centered performances at the Wright Music Building, bringing together students, alumni, faculty, guest artists, area trombonists and onlookers for a trombone celebration. MTSU trombone instructor David Loucky & Friends kick off performances at 2 p.m., with MTSU Trombone Ensembles, Bone Therapy—a trombone collective comprised largely of physicians—and then a group of MTSU trombone alumni following. The event culminates with a Mass Trombone Choir performance scheduled for 5:45 p.m., uniting all players onstage for a resonant, low-brass conclusion. Americana/alt-country artist Elliott Booe released his “Pilgrim Chapter 34,” a heartfelt tribute to his late father that marks the beginning of a profoundly personal father/son-themed project, in December.

Booe delivers powerful vocals, honest lyrics and old-soul storytelling that reflect both his Clay City, Indiana roots and his modern Nashville journey on the release, currently a single but planned to be “an ongoing project, including songs from my father and I, designed to give him his due,” said Booe, a former Indiana State University basketball standout-turned-full-time musician.

“My father embodied so much of what living is—loving, learning and always working,” Booe said. “A father, fighter and friend, this song sums up what can’t be expressed fully. The recognition of and gratitude for a real man.”

Booe held an event at The Vinyl Lounge Nashville on Dec. 17 to celebrate the release. He followed that up with a show at Murfreesboro’s Boro Bourbon & Brews on Dec. 23; he will return to Bourbon & Brews for a follow-up show on Feb. 2.

Now three years into his Nashville experience, he has become known for writing with intention and championing community. He actively supports the city’s songwriting culture by hosting a weekly original music show every Thursday in Nashville, providing a home for rising writers and artists to express themselves authentically. His songwriter cuts include “Grab Your Boots” (Chris Garner) and “Pink Cadillac” (Anna Wescoat), and his debut album First Off— released in the spring of 2025—earned two nominations for Song of the Year at the 2025 Josie Music Awards. In 2025, Elliott and The Impromptus took home the Josie Award for Country Song of the Year with “Song on the Radio.”

In 2025, Elliott and The Impromptus brought their high-energy sound to major stages, including opening slots for Alabama, Dustin Lynch and Brantley Gilbert. The group went on to record a live album at historic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, slated for release in 2026.

Nashville: Cinderella Sessions begins with “Kickin’ Up Dust” as Blackspur bursts in hot to play the blame game in this railing roadhouse charger before switching gears on the soft, forlorn, Bonnie Raitt-tinged ballad “Hard Road,” featuring a gospel-style breakdown of beautiful backing vocals.

The hybrid of spiritual and secular styles on this track makes it seem possible she’d break into worship, singing “Looooord” instead of “Loooooo-nlieness” at the verse.

“I Saw You” follows, a fast tempoed, honky-tonk-snared traveling song, driven by yodel and “haw” calls echoing against a rarin’ lap steel in this country buster, like when I saw you (When *Hi-YA!* Saw you [whip crack]!).

“Big Dipper,” a starry, country dreamscape with lap steel, acoustic strum and electric guitar filler riffs, delivers another heavily stringed canyon-of-sound number (with an easy piano rhythm and a xylophone’s ping) for a grandness that encapsulates the blend of the secular and heavenly. The power of the artist’s longing shines through in a wall-of-sound fashion in this beautiful late album track.

Little Feet, Big Fun Murfreesboro’s Lil’ Kickers program building confidence through soccer and play

or parents looking to introduce their active children to team sports in a way that emphasizes fun, confidencebuilding and development, Lil’ Kickers has become a choice for many families in Murfreesboro and nationwide.

With divisions designed for kids as young as 18 months through age 9, Lil’ Kickers uses imaginative, play-based activities to teach the framework of soccer, all while helping children grow socially, physically and emotionally. Coaches blend silly games with soccer skill development so children stay engaged and laugh while learning balance, coordination, running, ball control and the basics of the game of soccer.

“Lil’ Kickers is not a traditional soccer club where there are games and practices.

Using world renowned child development theories, child development professionals, experienced coaches and the expertise that comes along with thousands of hours of working with children, we created a curriculum that introduces kids to soccer and so much more,” said Josh Bowden, owner and operator of Lil’ Kickers of Murfreesboro. “Our program helps develop players who are good sports and good teammates— on and off the soccer field.”

For older kids, classes will conclude with a brief time of soccer scrimmage, to ease them into a bit of competitive gameplay, with perhaps three to six players per side.

However, Lil’ Kickers is not strictly a formal “soccer practice.” During the various games conducted at a session, parents may hear children yelling out about wolves or mashed potatoes or wizards or crossing a bridge or some other such fun, as the kids run about with other kickers, learning to adhere to rules of a game while burning off some energy and laughing with others in their age group.

“They’re not just having fun—they’re building brains,” Bowden said. “Our classes are designed to let kids lead, explore and grow.”

Soccer makes a great vehicle for teaching teamwork, according to Bowden.

“You learn to rely on your teammates to succeed,” he said. “And, honestly, at the end of the day, every child loves to just kick a ball!”

While the program is centered around soccer and teaches the rules and techniques to play the global sport—and also shows kids how to stretch and balance their

bodies, and has them running sprints and dribbling the ball at times—other activities may have boys and girls and coaches blowing bubbles, kicking over cones, playing amoeba tag and engaged in all manner of different games and drills.

Bowden’s career began in the fast-moving world of technology startups.

“Over time, I realized that what I valued most wasn’t any one of the companies’ missions or the tech itself—it was the human side of the work: understanding people, helping them grow and trying to allow them to bring out the best versions of themselves,” he said. “That realization, along with the birth of my son almost in tandem with the unexpected loss of one of my closest friends, connected me back to two lifelong passions: psychology and soccer.”

Bowden said he wanted to focus his energy on something that would make a real impact on kids and families, something that blended joy, development and community.

“That vision led me to start Lil’ Kickers of Murfreesboro,” he said. “I get to pour my heart into helping children build confidence, learn social and emotional skills, while discovering (hopefully) the same love of the game that shaped my own childhood.”

The method is crafted so that learning happens naturally, with imaginative storylines, age-specific games and small-sided scrimmaging that helps kids refine dribbling, passing and teamwork as well as communication and motor skill development.

“The program is designed to certainly reach beyond just the sport. I have had parents tell me directly how much of a positive impact it has had on their child’s everyday life, whether it has allowed them to grow socially or it has improved their listening skills,” Coach Josh said. “I even have parents tell me that their child insists on wearing their Lil’ Kickers jersey to bed as their PJs, which I absolutely love!”

Parents across the country praise the program for making learning fun and for helping kids build confidence, social skills, and a positive view towards being physically active.

“They love the imaginative games that are teaching soccer skills without them realizing it,” one parent shared, noting that their child looks forward to classes each week. Another added that their son “walked away a very happy kid after practice.”

Bowden said he is “very much actively looking for an opportunity to acquire a permanent location for our growing community to call home.”

For now, in Murfreesboro, Lil’ Kickers hosts sessions throughout the year at the Middle Tennessee State University Health, Wellness and Recreation Center and at Oakland High School’s practice facility.

Kids are welcome to attend a free trial class prior to registering for a season.

Whether your child is totally new to team sports or already a big soccer fan, introverted or extroverted, a bundle of energy all day long or a couch potato, Lil’ Kickers strives to provide a fun, supportive environment that celebrates effort, play, development, growth and fun.

Sometimes it takes a few sessions for a youngster to find their rhythm and become comfortable in the program, but parents of children with various differing personalities have been pleasantly surprised how Lil’ Kickers has benefited their kids.

Classes are currently held on Sunday afternoons in the MTSU Rec Center, and each class lasts for just under an hour.

A

lthough a party of Tennessee hikers had already explored the Elkmont Nature Trail and the Elkmont Ghost Town—just a piece of the sprawling Great Smoky Mountain National Park, containing numerous hiking trails, historic cabins, campsites and sections of mountain streams—a return trip proved that the vicinity still had much more to discover.

The former site of a logging town, and later a resort destination, the area surrounding the village has miles and miles of trails (foot trails as well as horse trails), the remains of plenty of old homes, bridges and other structures, and lots of preserved nature to see.

The Little River Trail, which originates from a parking area within Elkmont, reaches far into the Smoky Mountains. But those up for a shorter walk can follow the river for a short piece, however long they choose, head back and still get the flavor and experience of the Little River environment as the stream powerfully rushes along.

The ground here contained a surprising amount of snow and ice on a December day when the temperature hit 55 degrees in town. Not much sun strikes the river valley, keeping the air very cool down there in that hollow, mostly blocked from the sunlight by the surrounding mountains.

Starting out on the trail, find some ruins of a chimney and stairs. Numerous homes once dotted the area; a few still stand.

Explorers can also veer just off the main trail near its outset and cross a fascinating, small, moss-covered stone bridge feature known as the Troll Bridge.

Continuing on, the Little River Trail climbs gradually uphill as the pleasant sound of the river constantly fills the air, making it a good place for some fresh air and mountain river scenery.

Approximately two miles from the parking area, Huskey Branch Falls tumbles down the rocks to the right of the trail; the water flows underneath the path and into the river.

Those searching for a towering waterfall may pass this point right by, where the

continued from page 18 small Huskey Branch Creek flows into the river. It’s not the largest, most incredible waterfall, but a pleasing little cascade, a neat, narrow feature flowing down the hillside to the main river.

Just a little ways past this point, a group paused for a break, contemplating whether to turn around and head back to the parking area, or press on for a bit more.

A bear!

One of the Smoky Mountains’ famous black bears quietly slipped up behind some hikers, walking on a fallen log and making no sound in the fallen leaves and snow.

“Let’s . . . head on back,” the group decides.

Some experts say to leave your snacks behind. Food on the trail can indeed attract bears.

Going just a little farther down Little River Trail would bring explorers to an option to take the Cucumber Gap Trail, yet another path in the whole network of trails around the Elkmont area.

This Cucumber Gap Trail connects the Little River Trail to the Jakes Creek Trail.

Or, visitors can access Jakes Creek at a separate, nearby parking area near the former resort village and tackle it another day.

Wild birds use a variety of techniques to stay warm during the cold winter months; however, while they are equipped to withstand most winter weather, survival can be made easier by providing food, an open source of water and protection from freezing temperatures with natural plant cover or a roosting box. These are only a few of the steps you can take to attract feathered guests into the backyard this winter.

First and foremost, food is the most crucial element for a bird’s winter survival.

Providing birds with the energy, stamina and nutrition they need to stay warm will help immensely. Also, to stay warm, birds will expend energy very quickly, some losing up to 10 percent of their body weight on extremely cold nights. In these cases, an ample supply of high-calorie foods, such as sunflower seeds, peanuts and suet can be vital to a wild bird’s survival.

temperatures drop,” according to information from Jeff and Joann Royer, owners of Wild Birds Unlimited of Murfreesboro.

“Providing birds with an open water source will allow them to clean their feathers, which helps birds stay warm. Also, a bird bath with open water is often the only way for some birds to drink when it is cold.”

Many bird enthusiasts will use bird bath heaters to keep the water thawed during extensive freezing temperatures. By either adding a heater to the water source or purchasing a bird bath with a built-in heater, a bird bath containing thawed water in the winter has the potential to attract as many birds as bird food.

Finally, a natural plant cover or roosting box is also advised to help protect birds from harsh winters. By providing birds with these shelter options, you are also helping them secure safety from predators.

Rare Longevity in Life Johnny & Jerry Carroll

Hey everybody. I hope you all had a merry Christmas and are looking forward to the new year! I want to start 2026 off talking about a level of longevity in life that we rarely hear of.

I’m going to be talking about Johnny and Jerry Carroll. Johnny just celebrated his 101st birthday on Dec. 12. On April 18 of this year, he and Jerry will be married for 80 years. Then, Jerry will turn 100 on June 28, 2026. How do you get to 101, one might ask? Hard work and having a strong faith is the key, says Mr. Carroll.

Just ask yourself, how many folks do you know in their 100s, one being a World War II veteran, who have been married for 80 years?

How did they make it to the present day?

Johnny met his future bride, Jerry, in Nashville while he was delivering groceries one day to her house. They met in 1942 and Johnny was drafted into the Army in 1943 during World War II. They got engaged just before he went off to war. He had gotten a six-month deferment from the Army so he could get his diploma at East High School in Nashville. But at that point, Johnny took a train to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and then he went on to Fort

Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He went on to serve in the Pacific Theater.

Johnny left stateside from Camp Stoneman in California and he, along with nearly 1,000 troops, was on a ship that was a converted freight liner. At the bottom of the ship the men were stacked six bunks high.

They shipped out for the Pacific Theater on Nov. 1, 1943, and would not land until Jan. 1 of 1944 in Humboldt Bay on New Guinea.

The troops stayed on the water for another month, as the Japanese were still occupying some of the Philippine Islands. The American troops finally unloaded the ship in February 1944 at Humboldt Bay. Johnny’s adventures included getting to eat beans and sandwiches and nearly cutting off his finger opening up a can of beans.

The Philippines are comprised of thousands of islands. Johnny, an ammunition corporal, and his fellow troops set up on Leyte Island. He says they hauled sand 24 hours a day, shoveling sand onto the beach to help build the land up so they could put a base there. His battery of soldiers were mainly used to operate anti-aircraft guns.

Once they got everything set up, the colonel came in and told the soldiers to forget ev-

erything they knew about the 90 mm guns, because they had gotten brand new 120 mm guns that could reach targets up to 16 miles away. The shells weighed 100 pounds.

Johnny tells me the story of being in Manila when the bomb was dropped on Japan, in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He also was in Manila when General Douglas MacArthur walked right by him to give a speech at the university of Santo Tomas in 1945. The Japanese had used the university as a prison, while the United States had used it as a hospital during the war.

Johnny Carroll made it home safely in 1946 and made Jerry his bride. They borrowed her dad’s car and drove to Murfreesboro, where they had their honeymoon

at the James K. Polk hotel (located at the corner of Spring Street and East Main Street, where the Truist Bank building is today). Johnny became a milkman for Jersey Farms. He was actually my parents’ milkman for years, and I remember him from my childhood. The couple had three children: Betty, David and Alan.

The whole family got together for Johnny’s 101st birthday on Dec. 12. I asked him to tell me some stories about what had changed over the years. He told me his mother had lived in Brooklyn, New York City, and she took him to the World’s Fair in 1936. He got to see things of the future like microwaves and wireless telephones. He remembers horse-drawn wagons, the iceman and milkman, and saw the beginnings of radio, television, computers and cellphones.

Basically, he saw everything from the horse and buggy age all the way up to the jet age.

In 1936 he saw a projection TV for the first time. He also got to see the future superhighway system take shape, along with the development of subdivisions and commercial developments that spun off from the superhighways. This would all take place in the 1950s after President Eisenhower put in the Interstate Commerce Act to build all of the superhighways.

Later in life, Johnny got to attend the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville.

It’s very rare these days to know somebody who has survived World War II, is over 100 years old and, come April, will have been married to the same person for 80 years. Wow! Johnny and Jerry act nothing like a centenarian-plus-one and a soonto-be-centenarian at all. The Carrolls are both full of energy and living active lives in a home on Elliott Drive in Murfreesboro.

Johnny still works out with his weights in the morning. I hope we can all have the energy that these two have when we reach our advanced years.

By the way, during the interview, I found out Mrs. Carroll and my mother are Beta Sigma Phi sorority sisters. That’s a story for another time. It’s a small world, after all.

Town Creek Project Taking Shape Alongside Murfreesboro’s Broad Street

by Bobby Schneider The construction phase of Murfreesboro’s Town Creek Daylighting Project is now well underway. Passersby will notice major changes to the area alongside Broad Street, with buildings demolished, ground moved, and water now flowing above ground.

With the concrete culverts built in the 1950s being unearthed, reconstruction of the natural waterways continues as we enter 2026.

The project, taking place between South Church Street and Cannonsburgh Village in downtown Murfreesboro along the west side of Broad Street, will greatly change the landscape of the area, bringing a park type of feature into the heart of the city.

According to former Assistant City Manager Sam Huddleston, this construction project has been decades in the making.

“Town Creek’s been a project we’ve been working on for almost 20 years now,” Huddleston said on the Insider Podcast, produced by the City of Murfreesboro’s CityTV. This work will bring many changes to the area, including new green spaces, walking trails and seating areas. It will also connect several greenways in Murfreesboro together, allowing even greater accessibility to them, linking the nature trails at the

Murfree Spring Wetlands to Cannonsburgh Village and, thus, the rest of the Murfreesboro Greenway system.

“I’m not a big greenway user, but my best friend is,” said Murfreesboro resident Matt Carr. “He’s a runner, and I think it’s great because he’ll get to explore more stuff.”

The $22.5 million project was approved by the Murfreesboro City Council in 2016 and is being directed by SBW Constructors.

Despite the large price tag, the project has potential to have a positive impact on the area, according to many local business and government leaders.

“It is a lot of money, but it can bring in some more economic growth. I think that will help offset it,” said Terry Smith, co-owner of FastSigns of Murfreesboro. “It has the potential to be some really great opportunities for the city and for businesses locally.”

Most of the money came from federal stimulus funds for the stormwater elements of the project.

Murfreesboro residents will also see improvements to the walkability of the downtown area as a result of this project, with overpasses being built above both NW Daylighting project progressing off of NW Broad St.

Broad Street and South Church Street.

“It’s a great opportunity to connect more of our greenways together,” Smith noted, “and keep people safer than crossing Broad Street without the overpass.”

With several old buildings along NW Broad Street being demolished to make way for this project, residents expect improvements to the flow of traffic on that section of Broad Street as well, eliminating a few options for vehicles to turn in along the sometimes highly congested main roadway.

“You’re not going to be stop-and-go every five seconds on Broad Street,” Carr said.

“It should help the flow of traffic.”

With natural waterways being restored as a part of this project, and green space added, local wildlife should also benefit.

“The stream being open to the sunlight again will recreate the aquatic environment that you would expect in a thriving stream,” Huddleston said.

With the culverts being roughly 70 years old, the city needed to make improvements to the infrastructure of the underground waterways. They used this opportunity to begin the daylighting project, adding a natural structure to Murfreesboro’s stormwater management plan.

In-N-Out Burger, UFC Gym, D’Zone BTQ, Casa Primos, Redeemer Classical Academy, Red Bicycle California-based fast-food favorite In-NOut Burger has officially opened its first Middle Tennessee restaurants, including the one at 2508 Medical Center Pkwy. in Murfreesboro, welcoming fans with its classic made-to-order burgers, hand-diced fries and real ice cream shakes.

The December opening marked some of the chain’s first locations east of Texas, part of its broader expansion into Tennessee alongside new restaurants in Lebanon and Antioch. The Murfreesboro location features a single drive-through lane, indoor seating for about 74 guests and a covered patio with outdoor seating for roughly 30 more, and aims to employ about 75 local workers. InN-Out’s commitment to fresh, never-frozen ingredients and its passionate fan base have made the arrival a major event for local diners; nearby overflow parking areas have been necessary.

A new UFC Gym will come to the former YMCA facility at 205 N. Thompson Ln. Green Trails Triout Thompson Lane, LLC recently presented the city with redevelopment plans to convert the 30,000-plus-square-foot athletic building into a full-service mixed martial arts training center. UFC Gyms typically offer a mix of strength and cardio equipment, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu mats, bag rooms, functional training areas and personal training services.

Meanwhile, multiple new restaurants are being constructed on portions of YMCA’s former parking area.

Casa Primos, a new authentic Mexican restaurant concept, will be coming to downtown Murfreesboro.

The space just off the Murfreesboro Public Square at 211 W. Main St., previously home to High Society, will rebrand as Casa Primos.

The new establishment will keep the existing stage for live musical acts and will also host karaoke seven nights a week. But, while High Society offered a menu featuring burgers, steaks and sandwiches—similar to multiple other nearby restaurants—Casa Primos will be downtown Murfreesboro’s only Mexican restaurant, and will offer handmade tortillas, carnitas, lengua, pastor, homemade tamales, fish tacos and more.

The Tiger Woods-backed golf entertainment concept PopStroke opened its new year-round mini golf venue at 4221 Century Farms Terrace in Antioch in December. Biladi Coffee House will open soon, according to new signage displayed in a storefront near the Waffle House at the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard and Rutherford Boulevard. According to the lettering in the window the Experience of Yemeni Heritage Crafted for the Modern Taste will be brewing soon.

D’Zone BTQ, a retro-focused retail outlet, has opened on St. Andrews Drive after relocating from Nashville to Murfreesboro. The shop specializes in 1990s-era apparel, vintage games and pop-culture memorabilia. Fans of throwback fashion and pop culture can find fun, eclectic pieces at the niche boutique, now open at 132 St. Andrews Dr., Ste. F. Redeemer Classical Academy is planning to relocate its school to 210 Chaffin Pl., the former home of Old Fort Academy.

The plan includes using the existing building while constructing a new addition to support the school’s growth.

Rutherford County commissioners voted overwhelmingly to advance a plan to purchase the former Bank of America building near the Murfreesboro Public Square, moving into architectural planning and due-diligence stages for the roughly $17 million project. The nearly 29,000-squarefoot building, near the historic courthouse, could soon house multiple county departments in a centralized location. The seller agreed to lower the purchase price from $9 million to about $8.2 million, and design work will begin to prepare the building for renovation and future use.

Middle Tennessee State University broke ground Dec. 3 on its new state-of-theart aerospace facility at the Shelbyville Airport, marking a major step forward for one of the nation’s most highly recognized aerospace and aviation programs.

MTSU’s Shelbyville operation plans will result in an aviation hub that addresses the need for expansion and growth of the Department of Aerospace and its exploding pilot training program—while also meeting an important aviation industry need.

Red Bicycle Roasting Co. has closed its Murfreesboro location after its proprietors were evicted from the Murfreesboro Public Square space in midNovember over unpaid rent, according to reports from MTSU Sidelines.

The Nashville-based brand known for its artisanal coffee continues to operate multiple other Middle Tennessee locations, though its Murfreesboro cafe reportedly faced declining foot traffic leading up to the closing. Staff said the closure came after attempts by the business owners to negotiate with the property owners in an effort to keep the shop open were unsuccessful.

Whataburger has closed its Memorial Blvd. location in Murfreesboro as part of a broader reduction of Middle Tennessee stores. The company shuttered four of its 24 regional locations, though it continues to operate other restaurants locally on Medical Center Parkway and Old Fort Parkway.

Station Grill announced in late December that it would permanently close its Northfield Boulevard bar and grill on Jan. 1, 2026.

“Our lease at Georgetown Park will not be renewed by the property’s landlord,” according to a statement posted to social media. “We were informed that the decision not to renew was made simply because the landlord ‘didn’t want to;’ we want to express our sincere appreciation to our loyal customers and dedicated staff who have supported Station Grill over the years.”

Murfreesboro’s Kaye Jernigan Named Titans Fan of the Year, Now Up for NFL-Wide Contest

by Bobby Schneider Kaye Jernigan, a longtime member of the Murfreesboro community, was met with the surprise of her year when she was announced as the 2025 Tennessee Titans Fan of the Year.

In November, members of the Titans’ organization came to her workplace at Middle Tennessee State University with the big announcement.

“They showed up here at work and gave me the news,” Jernigan said. “I was really in shock and disbelief.”

Since then, Jernigan has attended multiple Titans home games and has had some memorable experiences on the field.

“I had some passes to go down on the field,” Jernigan said. “I got a chance to go where T-Rac’s den is and meet him there and ride out onto the field.”

She also had the chance to run out of the tunnel alongside Titans players during their final home game of the season against the New Orleans Saints.

Jernigan has been a devoted Titans fan ever since the team moved from Houston to Tennessee in 1997.

“When they talked about coming here, of course, we were just overjoyed to have them,” she said.

Jernigan’s devotion to the Titans has been unwavering since the beginning, having traveled out to Memphis in 1997 and Vanderbilt in 1998 for home games the first two years after the NFL fran26 * January 2026 * boropulse.com

The Titans have had a profound impact on Jernigan’s family, and have created lasting memories for them this season.

“The Titans have been nothing but great to my family this entire year,” Jernigan said.

This impact is especially true with how it shaped her bond with her late father.

“Me and my dad always watched football together for as long as I can remember,” she said. “I wish my dad was still here to take him.”

Jernigan is a retired assistant chief of the Murfreesboro Fire Department, having served the community for 33 years with that department. Now, she is the Emergency Operations Manager at Middle Tennessee State University.

Fans can now vote for Jernigan—as well as fan representatives from all of the NFL’s 32 franchises—to be honored as the NFL Fan of the Year through the NFL’s website.

The NFL Fan of the Year program aims to honor fans of each team who display “exceptional passion for the team, community service and unwavering love of football.”

Jernigan applied to be the Titans Fan of the Year with the help of her niece during a 2025 preseason game. Fans interested in applying to be next year’s Titans Fan of the Year can do so during August and September 2026, the time period of the preseason and the first month of the NFL regular season.

ome winter days just seem to call for a warm, comforting bowl of soup, broth with some soft noodles and a bit of spice. Murfreesboro’s Golden Lanzhou Bowls has established its place in the local dining scene, thanks in large part to its defining dish—Lanzhou Traditional Beef Soup Noodles, a staple in parts of China.

On a recent visit to Golden Lanzhou Bowls, a group of newcomers found a table and were greeted almost immediately by a server bringing glasses of water for everyone and a complimentary starter: crispy, fried wide noodles, crunchy and feather-light, accompanied by a small dish of sweet chili sauce for dipping.

The lunch special on this particular day was sesame chicken with rice and broccoli, priced at $8.99, and it arrived as a genuinely generous plate. Quite tasty, as well.

As far as the beef noodle soup, Golden Lanzhou Bowls prepares its house-made noodles in three styles—angel hair, regular or wide—and serves these fresh, chewy noodles in a large bowl of broth accompanied by thin slices of beef, translucent pieces of radish rounds and finely chopped scallions.

Diners can order this dish regular (medium spicy), no spice or extra spicy. At first glance, the visual of a bowl, ordered regular, arriving

at the table with a generous pool of chili oil floating on the surface mingling with the soup, gave a customer a bit of concern as to how hot it may be; the dish was not overly spicy at all, however. The spice was just about right for a large bowl, loaded with the long, soft noodles.

Beyond noodle soups, Golden Lanzhou Bowls boasts a deep lineup of dim sum, including the Xiao Long Bao, steamed buns filled with minced pork—super soft and fluffy! The exterior of these bao is like the fluffiest type of roll.

The menu also offers bao with other filling options, fried or steamed dumplings, steamed custard buns and shumai (shrimp dumplings).

The smashed cucumber gets a lot of positive feedback from customers.

The Chinese hamburger arrived with a crisp, flaky exterior, stuffed generously with bits of chopped beef tossed in a sweet, tangy sauce along with small pieces of onion and green pepper. The texture was outstanding—crunchy outside, tender and meaty within. One diner likened it to a “flaky Asian sloppy joe.”

There’s also kimchee, fried wings, crab rangoon and tea eggs—hard-boiled eggs cracked slightly and simmered in tea, creating a marbling pattern and spiced taste.

The menu is packed with other Asian favorites—orange chicken, kung pao, chow mein, fried rice, General Tso’s chicken, katsu (deep-fried chicken breast cutlet) and Mongolian beef.

Clearly, the place features mostly Asian cuisine, but a traditional Cajun-style crawfish platter, with sausage, corn and potatoes, also makes an appearance.

Some critique the value at the restaurant, and, yes, the main soup dish, at $17, may not be the satisfactory choice for everyone.

But there’s definitely value to be had at the place with its specials and small plates.

The restaurant appears very clean, the tabletop tablets make for a streamlined ordering process, and Golden Lanzhou Bowls’ take on regional Chinese cuisine has a lot of flavor and texture to explore.

Constitution Study

Most of us believe that our state legislatures are making our state laws.

But what if that is only partially true? What if a third party was making the laws for your state? Would you be okay with that? Would you be concerned to find out that two private entities are making the laws your state uses regarding commerce?

We were all taught in school that governments in the United States have three branches: legislative, executive and judicial.

While Congress had given up much of its legislative power to executive agencies when it comes to commerce, the states have given up their power as well—not to executive agencies in the government, but to two third-party actors that make up laws that the states merely adopt. These “laws” are called the Uniform Commercial Code.

The Uniform Law Commission was formed in 1892 in part to create uniform commercial laws. The Uniform Negotiable Instruments Law was approved in 1896, and soon enacted in every state. More commercial laws soon followed: the Uniform Sales Act and Uniform Warehouse Receipts Act in 1906; the Uniform Bills of Lading Act and Uniform Stock Transfer Act in 1909; and the Uniform Conditional Sales Act in 1918.

— Uniform Commercial Code In the late 19th century, the United States was in the middle of the Industrial Revolution. With the westward migration of so many people, now connected by railroads, the differences in commerce laws between the states was becoming a hindrance. In 1892, a group called the Uniform Law Commission was formed to help create laws that multiple states could agree to, allowing better interstate commerce. There’s just one problem here: the Constitution.

Third Party Laws and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes; — U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 8, Clause 3 This code contains not only the fact that Congress has the power to regulate interstate commerce, it also defines commerce within the states. Furthermore, states are forbidden from entering interstate compacts without Congress’ permission.

No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any Duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, — U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 10, Clause 3 However, this isn’t an interstate compact, since the states don’t agree to adopt the parts of the UCC, but to consider the proposed legislation. So we have a loophole to implement common laws used for both intrastate and interstate commerce, which is nothing new, though I’m getting ahead of myself.

The ULC officially took on the task of drafting a comprehensive code to provide guidelines for all commercial transactions in 1940.

— Uniform Commercial Code Let me be perfectly clear: I do not have a problem with individuals, or even groups, suggesting legislation. I have drafted, and continue to draft, suggested legislation for my state and county representatives for consideration. As we’ll see, it’s not the suggestions that are the problem.

In 1942, the ULC and the American Law Institute joined in a partnership that put all the component commercial laws together in a comprehensive Uniform Commercial Code that was offered to the states for their consideration in 1951.

I can only assume that the American Law Institute is full of lawyers. I don’t know what the law schools taught back in 1942, but today my polling has shown they do not teach the supreme law of the land: The United States Constitution.

Again, the idea of making the commerce laws between the states more uniform has some logic to it, but I don’t think what was started back in the 1940s is what we are seeing today.

Pennsylvania became the first state to adopt the UCC in 1953, and every other state followed suit over the next 20 years.

Third-Party Law Making

As you can imagine, creating a set of laws that meets the needs of an entire continent is no small task.

It appears that the Uniform Law Commission bit off more than they could chew, so they reached out to the American Law Institute for help. This started a decadelong attempt to draft the UCC. Has anyone wondered where they got the money for this endeavor?

Over the next ten years the two organizations collaborated at drafting meetings funded in large part by a generous grant from the Maurice and Laura Falk Foundation, with additional funding contributed from law firms, banks, and businesses that recognized the need for uniform commercial laws.

— Uniform Commercial Code I had not heard of the Maurice and Laura Falk Foundation. A little research taught me: The Maurice and Laura Falk Foundation is a racial and social justice organization founded in 1929. The Foundation funded research in economics, healthcare, political science, and racial discrimination issues.

— Maurice and Laura Falk Foundation So the Falk Foundation funded projects in several different disciplines, but with a racial and “social justice” point of view. That will become important later.

The UCC is maintained under the guidance of the Permanent Editorial Board for the Uniform Commercial Code (PEB), comprised of members appointed by the ULC and the ALI. The PEB, established in 1961, monitors developments in commercial law, recommends UCC amendments and revisions when necessary, and publishes official commentary to help courts interpret specific UCC provisions. An endowment established with the original Falk Foundation grant funding and replenished with UCC publishing royalties is available to

fund UCC drafting projects.

— Uniform Commercial Code So if you thought two third parties wasn’t enough bureaucracy, they formed the Permanent Editorial Board for the Uniform Commercial Code.

Article 1 of the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) provides definitions and general provisions which, in the absence of conflicting provisions, apply as default rules covering transactions . . . In addition, over the years it has been in place, certain provisions of Article 1 have been identified as confusing or imprecise. . . . certain changes of a substantive nature needed to be made.

— Uniform Commercial Code A fairly substantial set of changes was made for the 2001 revision.

The 2001 Revision of Uniform Commercial Code Article 1 rounds out a complete refurbishment of the Uniform Commercial Code that began in 1985. New articles have been added.

All the major articles have been either revised or amended.

Conclusion

The logic of a uniform commercial code makes sense. How difficult would it be to do business across state lines if the rules for letters of credit or mortgages were different?

But is the UCC the best, or even the legal way, to accomplish this end? Congress, not the Permanent Editorial Board of the UCC, has the legal authority to regulate interstate commerce. While the different acts of the UCC are not exactly interstate compacts, they come awfully close.

The UCC is composed of several acts. Not every state has adopted all of the acts. For example, my adopted home state of Tennessee has only adopted Article 3: Negotiable instruments and Article 4: Bank Deposits and Collections, but I am concerned that politicians, in their drive to “do something,” may see the UCC as an easy shortcut and not fully consider the impact this third-party would have on their citizens. After all, the entire process is primarily funded by what appears to be a left-leaning foundation more interested in political causes than those of commerce.

Are you confident that your representatives in your state legislature have properly considered the proposed legislation? Would you be more comfortable if your elected members of Congress were making those decisions instead?

What the Latest SNAP Changes Mean for Participants

By Amelia Luna During the government shutdown in October and November of 2025, hundreds of thousands of Tennessee residents had to wait a few additional weeks for their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Tennessee’s Department of Human Services announced that SNAP benefits have been distributed to recipients via their Electronic Benefits Transfer cards, including any backlogged payments.

But even as monthly benefits resume, recipients should be aware of other changes to SNAP that may directly affect them. Not everyone who was once eligible for SNAP will continue to receive benefits going forward, and there will now be additional requirements for many recipients.

Work requirements, which had been suspended during COVID and were reinstated in 2023, were expanded this year to include most SNAP recipients from ages 18 to 64.

Many adults will now be required to work or volunteer 20 hours per week to retain their SNAP benefits. Groups for whom work requirements have changed include veterans, former foster youth and people experiencing homelessness.

Those who are exempt include: – Anyone on SSI, SSDI or VA disability benefits – Anyone under age 18 or age 65 and older – Anyone with a child under age 14 in their SNAP household – Anyone who earns at least $217.50 per week before taxes – Anyone with a physical or mental condition preventing them from working – Anyone in school or training at least half-time – Anyone who is pregnant – Anyone receiving unemployment benefits – Anyone in drug or alcohol treatment If you don’t meet an exemption, you will only be eligible for three months of SNAP in a threeyear period. The current three-year period started Jan. 1, 2025, and ends Dec. 31, 2027.

If you’re among those whose benefits are at risk, you should have already received a letter from DHS explaining how to keep your benefits by providing proof you meet an exemption. If you fall under one of the above exemptions, you can upload proof of your exemption to Tennessee DHS’s One DHS Customer Portal (onedhs.tn.gov) or bring it to your county’s DHS office.

How to Apply for SNAP Though SNAP continues to undergo changes, the

good news is that it’s still available to help prevent food insecurity among low-income Tennesseans.

To apply for SNAP, go to your county’s DHS office or visit onedhs.tn.gov to create an online account.

You can also fax or mail your application to the DHS office in your county.

Initially, all you’ll need to supply is your name, address and signature. However, in order to be approved for benefits, you’ll need to provide some additional information, which may include: – A birth certificate or driver’s license – Up to eight weeks of pay stubs for any household member who is working – Proof of Social Security, VA, unemployment, child support or alimony you receive – Documentation of the balance in any bank accounts you may have – Proof of rent or mortgage payments – Utility bills – Proof of daycare or babysitting costs – Proof of medical costs (for those who are disabled or age 60 and above) It’s important to note that the earlier you apply in the month, the more SNAP you will get for the first month if you are approved. When you apply, make sure to get a receipt, including the date you applied and copies of any papers you’ve submitted.

DHS has 30 days to approve or deny most SNAP applications and provide benefits for eligible applicants. For Tennesseans making less than $150 a month before taxes, and who also have $100 or less in resources, DHS should approve or deny your application within seven days after you apply.

Free Your Children Year in Review Another year has come and gone as Free YOUR Children stood on the battlefield fighting for citizens in Tennessee and across the nation, all while home-schooling two children of my own. I hear often that working parents can’t home-school. The truth is they

can; I know because I am one.

Free YOUR Children has become a full-time responsibility, behind only God, my family and the home education of our daughters. It is work the entire family contributes to, but work that is often funded from our own family’s personal budget. How

many of you pay your employer for the privilege of going to work 70-plus hours a week?

“What on earth could you possibly be doing?” you may be wondering. Here’s a glimpse of our year in review.

We logged numerous miles as we traveled to Cookeville, Memphis, Hendersonville, Jackson, and Franklin, Tennessee, to present seminars that armed attendees with information they need to better protect their families. We also ventured to Pigeon Forge, where I participated in a homeschooling panel hosted by Sam Sorbo, and to The Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, where I spoke on multiple topics for a homeschooling conference.

As if this wasn’t keeping us busy enough, last year we drafted and filed a historic bill that garnered national attention, The FREE Act. We spent many days and weeks at the Capitol visiting our legislators, at least the ones willing to have a conversation with us. A trip to the Capitol is always an adventure. There we paid hundreds of dollars in parking fees, dragged coolers for blocks, braved below-zero temperatures, and watched as legislators bolted out back doors to avoid conversations with us. On the bright side, we definitely got our steps in as we traversed blocks and blocks in downtown Nashville to the Cordell Hull Building.

We watched the legislative circus as our “conservative” representatives killed our bill while claiming that homeschool parents, if given full educational autonomy, would potentially abuse or sex-traffic their children. Ironically, all the while, these same legislators never addressed the epidemic of educator abuse happening in public schools.

Many saw this as a fail, but we at Free YOUR Children viewed it as an opportunity to expose legislators who are anything but conservative.

I also interviewed some amazing, freedom-minded individuals on the FYC podcast in 2025 and continued to expose globalists and their most recent schemes, blew the whistle on bad bills and legislators, and issued calls to action, not only for Tennessee but across the nation.

For five years now, Free YOUR Children has been diligently working for you. We have never changed our stance, never wavered, and we haven’t quit.

We have remained steadfast, giving seminars, contributing monthly to the Murfreesboro Pulse, hosting the FYC podcast, giving interviews, running our social media pages, sending out a free newsletter, tracking legislation, traveling to the Capitol to attend committee meetings and for appointments with legislators. I served as a consultant to politicians, political candidates, private school leaders, and families who were beginning their home-schooling journey.

We watched as our Facebook page grew to 18,000 followers and counting. The social media aspect of FYC is a full-time job in and of itself.

Our small but mighty team gives selflessly of their time and talents asking for nothing in return. They heap more and more responsibilities on their plates because they believe in our ministry and they know the truth. I could not do this without their help and support and I am forever indebted to them. I value and admire their dedication and am thankful for them. The workload is heavy but losing our freedom is heavier.

So we keep plugging away.

The Widow’s Tax

can remove the emotional pain of losing a spouse, thoughtful tax and financial guidance can make the financial transition easier.

A Hidden Financial Challenge After Loss Losing a spouse is one of

the hardest things anyone can go through. There’s never a good time for it to happen—and even after decades together, it’s painful, life-changing and deeply personal. During that time, the last thing on your mind is taxes. But for many surviving spouses, especially those already in retirement, the next year’s tax bill may actually go up. This is often called the “widow’s tax” or the “widow’s penalty.”

Even if this doesn’t apply to you right now, it might affect your parents, relatives or friends, so it’s worth understanding how it works.

A “Double Whammy” When a spouse passes away, there are two big tax changes that often make the surviving spouse’s situation more difficult.

Filing Status Changes In the year your spouse dies, you can still file as Married Filing Jointly. The following year, unless you qualify as a Qualifying Surviving Spouse (which only applies if you have a dependent), your filing status changes to Single.

That shift alone cuts your standard deduction in half. For

2025, the standard deduction is: $31,500 for Married Filing Jointly $15,750 for Single filers (These amounts are slightly higher for taxpayers age 65 and older.)

Here’s what that means in simple numbers: If you have $100,000 of income, then: – As a couple filing jointly, your taxable income would be about $68,500 ($100,000 − $31,500).

– As a single filer, your taxable income would be about $84,250 ($100,000 − $15,750).

So even with the same income, a single filer ends up paying taxes on $15,750 more income, just because of filing status.

The Tax Brackets Get Narrower In addition to losing part of the deduction, the income brackets themselves are roughly cut in half.

For example, using 2025 figures: – The top end of the 12% tax bracket is $96,950 for Married Filing Jointly.

– For Single filers, that same 12% bracket tops out at $48,475.

That means the same amount of income can easily push a surviving spouse into a higher bracket. Income that was taxed

at 12% when filing jointly could now be taxed at 22% when filing single.

That’s the essence of the “widow’s penalty”: higher taxes.

Planning During a Difficult Time While the loss of a spouse is not a time most people are focused on taxes, it can present important tax-planning opportunities that don’t come again.

Because you can still file jointly in that year, you may be able to: Accelerate income into the current year (for example, Roth conversions or IRA withdrawals) to take advantage of the lower joint brackets.

Make strategic charitable gifts while deductions and brackets are still higher.

Review retirement accounts and estate plans, ensuring surviving spouses and children will face less tax later. For example, if you convert some IRA funds to a Roth IRA while still filing jointly, you might be able to pay 12% or 22% tax now, instead of leaving those assets for your children to withdraw later in their 24% to 37% brackets.

to associate the coming of a new year with setting goals, outlining what you want to achieve in the next year. Another common ritual is to choose one word for the year to live your life by, with great intention. The word is acting as your guide in the choices you’ll make, in the actions you’ll take and the outcomes you anticipate by applying that word to all you think and do. Why has choosing one word gained such popularity? Because it’s easier to focus on just one word, one intention at a time instead of your entire goal list. Bite-sized pieces are always more digestible.

How do you choose a word to live by for an entire year? It’s good to reflect on the previous year and list what happened that was desirable and successful, but also note what was challenging or what you need more help with. Where and how would you like to grow? What are your weaknesses? What are your strengths? This is a good place to start so you can approach each day with conviction and accountability.

Your word must be personal, unique to you. You can get suggestions for words and meaning, but you will choose what resonates with you. It will feel right.

Write your word out and make copies. Tape it to your common areas—nightstand, bathroom mirror, closet, car, wallet, kitchen, garage , studio, travel bag, briefcase—wherever you will see it often. Before you make a decision or answer someone, pause and place your word in each scenario. Let it sink in for a moment. Make sure your decision or answer is in alignment with your desired word for the year.

These are all moments of truth to shaping what the end of your year will look and feel like.

Sometimes our words offer another way of looking at things, or areas of our lives: things we’ve become complacent with, unaware of, or even apathetic to. When we are intentional with our word, we will often see things from another viewpoint, or actually notice what before may have seemed invisible.

So, how do you know what word is right for you?

Let’s paraphrase from the above: • Ask yourself what you want to achieve in the coming year.

• What things do you want to let go of ? Situational stress, bad habits, confrontations?

• What do you want to improve on? Being more available, saying no more often, building relationships, visiting family?

• How do you want your life to look? More friends, fewer friends, travel, companionship, more self-exploration?

• Write down words—not in any particular fashion or order, just words that come to mind. Scratch off the ones that really don’t excite or move you.

Look up definitions or meanings for the remaining words. Think outside of the dictionary.

Once you have selected a word, visualize it washing over you like flowing water. Allow the water to wash any negative beliefs you’ve been harboring. This word will act as your guide, intuition and intention in all you do in the coming year. At the end of this next year, you will be able to look back and see how much your word shaped your reality and outcomes.

In case you’re finding it particularly difficult or mundane to come up with a word you can sink your grit into, I will share a few to jump-start you.

Yes! – Many have used the word “yes” to break through boundaries that inhibited them from making changes or doing new things. When yes is your word, you remember that you are allowing yourself to be open to situations and invitations that you otherwise might reject. This allows you to experience new things, places and even people. Obviously, do what is safe and legal, but otherwise say YES and see what happens!

Fragile – This word is designed to approach choices, situations and people as though they were all fragile and precious. If you only had this one moment or chance to take it all in, how would you see your opportunities with this mindset? Would you rush through or take your time and savor?

Colorful – Maybe you want to see the color in every aspect of your life. If something feels dull, how could you use color to brighten it up or see it differently? Full, rich, vibrant choices in life can add lots of color to your moments, days and months for the year.

Celebrate – Make time to celebrate each day, recognizing the importance of little things and celebrating them. Imagine a year full of celebrations? What joy that would bring to your life at the end of a year.

Courage – We all need courage when we are embarking into the unknown. Make a little badge or carry a note with the word written on it, write it on your bathroom mirror, and remember that you are equipped with this word and all the power it carries in each activity you do.

Whatever you choose, claim it all year long. Let it whisper to you when you are struggling or in doubt.

Feel it continually washing over you, surrounding you and encouraging you to claim this year in conviction to this word. Imagine what you’ll be able to share at the end of a year. I can’t wait to hear all about it!
