FROM THE HELM CHOPPERTOWN LIVE AT THE CHEROKEE BLUE RIDGE RUN HOWDY BROTHERS AND SISTERS! August is the month for Sturgis and this year marks the 81st running of the Black Hills Rally. It is a great time to be on two wheels! Speaking of, as you know, Born To Ride put on Motorfest out in Plant City, Florida on July 24th and the event was a huge success. We came, we conquered, and kicked some ass! Riders everywhere showed up for a killer day of motorcycle rodeo madness, great bands and for the brotherhood and sisterhood found whenever bikers get together. Special thanks to Rob Schwellinger of R&R Cycles for being our maestro of motorcycle rodeo action as well as our sponsors Rubenstein Law, Paughco Motorcycle Parts, Denver’s Choppers, Metalsport Wheels and Vee Rubber.

The original “Biker’s Bible” for over 50 years will be back on newsstands, in convenience stores, found at bike shops and available for subscriptions. As you may know, I was the editor-in-chief of Easyriders for 24 years until the company was sold to a Canadian concern that wanted the brand to sell T-shirts, hats and other licensed products.

The magazine that bikers everywhere loved, ceased production two years ago.

Well, the original owner of Easyriders, Joe Teresi, has licensed the rights for magazine production to publisher Ray Pelosi. Ray believes that bikers everywhere and the motorcycle aftermarket as a whole needs America’s “Biker’s Bible” to return and asked me to once again take the reins as the editor of the new Classic Easyriders.

The reimagined biker rag will appear around the end of November this year. It will include five custom bike features from mild to wild, the world’s best bike runs and rallies, interviews with biker legends and a classic David Mann painting in each

THE BASIC LEFT-TURN

Approaching a busy four-way intersection there are a lot of elements to monitor: cross traffic may or may not stop for the light; pedestrians could step out at any time; an oncoming car waiting to turn left could fail to detect your presence and turn left in front of you. Sure enough, just as you approach the intersection, the car in the opposing left-turn lane swings into your path. You brake hard and swerve at the last second, barely avoiding a broadside collision.

Strategy: Without a doubt, this scenario is a frequent hazard for motorcyclists riding in urban areas. A common type of motorcycle crash (for sober riders) occurs during daylight hours, at low speeds (around 30 mph), when an oncoming vehicle turns left into your path. Again, when approaching an intersection with a vehicle waiting in the left-turn lane, your best bet is to assume the worst: that a car will pull out in front of you. Reduce your speed as you approach the intersection, either downshifting or lightly applying the front brake. Adjust your position in the lane to be seen better. Slowing will increase your safety cushion: slowing just 10 mph reduces your stopping distance significantly, and covering your brake greatly reduces reaction time. After you’ve slowed, continue to visually monitor the car in case it moves and forces you to change position or stop quickly.

This month Born To Ride reviews the Mini-Skirt Mob, another in a series of horrible old biker films for your entertainment. In some cases “the older the more horrible” comes to mind when dealing with these movies. This one was produced in 1968, and rates right (down) there with the best of the worst!

The plot bears more than a few similarities to Satan’s Sadists (which I have previously reviewed for BTR). In this case, it’s Shayne, the psychotic female leader of The “Mini Skirts” played by Diane McBain and her hair-do, stalking the innocent young couple along with her ‘gang’ members. It seems that “Jeff” the man she’s after used to be “her guy,” but he got wise, dumped his rodeo/biker buddies and married some hot brunette girl from the local bank. This in my opinion was a weird mix. The connection involving ‘biker’ girls and rodeo guys never seemed to materialize. It looked more like a ‘hippie’ flick than a poorly made biker film. Anyway, here’s my best

shot at explaining the plot. … Just as Jeff, was preparing apply the pork to his new bride “Connie” all his old pals and the “Mini-Skirts” arrive at his camper trailer to party.

This of course leads to a major fistfight, where Jeff and his new bride suffer the worst of the melee. Later Shayne the maniacal jilted blonde (and her hair-do) convinces the other ne’er-do-wells to hang around with her, and continue to torture Jeff and Connie. As they chase them up a mountain road Jeff swerves and runs “LG” off the road crashing his motorcycle into a deep chasm. They return to find him dead, and decide to leave, but some boy scouts see all the action. The cops come later, and haul LG off. (You don’t see too much of the cops in this one oddly. ...) Later on, the gang finds Jeff and Connie camped out, and a couple of the guys rough Connie up while Jeff is out walking around. More psycho-babble from Shayne leads the gang to keep the couple trapped in the trailer with a rifle. That only works for a while, as Jeff tries to rig something up with the propane bottle, and the stove in the camper. As usual in these films one of the members turns on the other. In this case it’s Shayne’s sister, who wants to release Jeff and his bride and return to town. She knocks one of the rodeo rednecks out, and hatches a plan with Jeff and Connie.

As she dons Connie’s clothes, the couple escapes while she fires at the gang from inside the trailer. The gang retaliates with Molotov cocktails, leading to one of the ubiquitous gags where a stunt man wears a fire suit and runs around the desert while flaming away. Anyhow, I’m not sure where the beer (or the empty bottles) originally came from, but the blast from the exploding propane kills Shayne’s sister. In the end two of the gang chase Jeff and Connie through the desert, and Shayne’s motorcycle slips on the edge of a ravine and crashes down several hundred feet. Shayne is holding on to the edge for dear life and begs Connie to save her. Connie grasps Shayne’s hand but well you know … she kinda lets go as Jeff approaches, and the couple watches as Shayne tumbles to her death.

As typical in these old reels, most of the actors were totally unconvincing. I found myself thinking- these aren’t real bikers or rodeo dudes! These are simply bourgeois B-movie Hollywood types earning a living at ruining their future careers. I think that during most of the viewings however. Biker exploitation? No. Waste of good Mylar? Probably. You watch it and decide for yourself.

I can only recommend this piece if you have a burning desire to see hot Sixties chicks in mini-skirts, go-go boots and huge hair.

I did like the old Honda and Triumph motorcycles, and of course since there was Budweiser, (still not sure where it came from) it got one star. It runs 82 minutes, is available on DVD from MGM’s ‘Midnight Movies’ series, and I can only (in my right mind) give it 2 stars because there was a glaring lack of nudity. (The second star appears because I LOVE cat-fights!) So grab a Bud and some popcorn, and we’ll see ya next month!

MOTOFEST MADNESS Whoa Nellie! If you missed it, you missed a whole lot of beautiful steel horses in one place. If you were there, you know that no words can totally convey what went down the stretch. I’m squawking about the Great American Motofest that ran at the Boss Hogg ranch.

Mike, Cherry and I were so busy treating the fans to one hell of a mechanical equestrian event that we totally lost track of time. Before we knew it, most of our friends were beating the dusty trail home in front of the inevitable rain that was en route. All day long at the ranch Mother Nature was leading the pack with no precipitation in sight. There was a decent gallop from cloud cover and a fairly nice breeze blowing up from behind.

Mike interrupts, “Rein it in, Spyke. Mother Nature? No precipitation? Cloud cover?

Fairly nice breeze? You sound like you’re calling the fifth race at Churchill Downs. I know we were at a ranch but there were no four-legged steeds named after weather conditions to be found. I think your birdbrain got a little fried from the lack of rain and smelling all the unburnt hydrocarbons coming from the awesome iron ponies at BTR 38 | BORNTORIDE.COM

I cackle, “Yeah, scattered like horses seeing plastic bags fluttering in trees. Anyways, the event had the true feel of an Easyriders Rodeo from days gone by. Not with horses but with horsepower. On that Saturday old school met new school. With a mixture of crowd participants and spectators from young to old enjoying the mini bike races, the choppers and rods show, the tractor pulls and the bike games, it was a true fossil fueled machine gymkhana.”

“Topping off the event was some hilarious outhouse drag racing and awesome music with the Tommy Roxxs band inviting me on stage posing as a ‘Freebird’ on his monitor during the finale. Rubenstein Law had their beautiful red white and blue stallion bagger on display for everyone to see and chopper alley was filled with wild Nellie’s.”

Mike cuts me off, saying, “Hey featherhead, I don’t think there was one chopper named Nellie and you’re not a free bird, you’re rather expensive. For our avid fans that didn’t make it to the epic experience, y’all can get the full feed sack by checking out the pictures here between these covers, on BTR’s Facebook page, the upcoming episodes of BTR TV, in next month’s issue and on the John and Heather show. I believe there were more Kodak moments taken of the wild mechanical horses than of

you, and that’s a rarity.”

“I was running around like a headless horseman and didn’t get a chance to snap any pics of you hanging with your friends,” Mike goes on. “But, someone did get a shot of us tapping a beer for Cherry after running down the home stretch, ending the day.”

I screech, “Maybe in your mind you were running, but your left leg said you were a Tennessee Walker. At least you didn’t fall because I don’t think you’d giddy-up without feeling some embarrassment. Now you’re starting to look like the good ol’ Mike who used to saddle us up on the Fat Bird, ride to every event possible, tether me to anyone’s shoulder and gallop off for a cold one or something from a feed bag.”

Mike bellows loudly, “Hey Spyke, that’s the start of horse shit! On the other hand, that’s just what you and I do. People don’t call us the Spyke and Mike show for no reason.”

I cluck, “Well dude, at least we both look pretty fit in our travels. That’s ‘cuz we’re on a stable diet just like trotters.”

Mike babbles, “You’ve got to tighten up the reins, Spyke. It’s pasture bedtime and I’d hate for you to have nightmares. Tomorrow Ron wants us to saddle up early. I’ll need to get my knees under the keys, your wings out the window and the four wheels of the mechanical workhorse cantering down the road to the BTR barn.”

CHRISTIAN MOTORCYCLISTS ASSOCIATION I was thinking about some of my riding experiences, both good and not so good, and wondered how I was able to keep from killing myself. Some of my adventures defy normal thinking but I somehow survived! For instance, one night after work at about 11:30pm, I got on my bike and discovered that I had no lights. I had no headlight or taillight, no turn-signals, not even gauge lights, nothing!

After having a long conversation with myself, I brilliantly deduced that I could ride home in the dark, clear across Ocala. Shoot, there was only about two or three miles where there were no street lights and I would be riding in pitch black conditions. It would be really hard to see where I was going, much less where the road was going. It never occurred to me to think about the fact that a vehicle could run up behind and run over me, since they couldn’t see me.

I guess my positive attitude was all I felt I needed and I could be on my way. I had confidence that goes with ignorance that I could fix the problem. wasn’t going to let the facts get me down.

I stayed patient as I attempted to reach someone to come and get me, or to simply figure out the cause of the problem.

Since this was in the 1970’s, there was no such thing as a cell phone and pay phones (takes you back, doesn’t it) were few and far between. Besides, I really needed to be on my way as I wasn’t in a better part of Ocala, and by myself. So, I had a quick talk with myself and decided to say a short prayer and be on my way.

All these years later, I now know that there is an answer to this problem that I faced. In Romans 12:12 the Bible says, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Believe it or not I was sort of following the biblical answer, but in ignorance I could have gotten myself killed. I did have a good attitude and the belief that I could handle the problem. I was patient, even with the challenges that were popping up; I didn’t quit. And the third admonishment was prayer, not to just any god, but to the One true God. What this says to me is that with God leading and directing our paths while we stay patient to His timing, He can teach us through prayer not to do stupid things. Make sure to listen for and to His voice! Since He is always there, He is likewise always available even at 11:30 at night in the dark!
