his bike has been through more modifications than anything I’ve built. It all started about 5 years ago when I bought a ’78 Superglide off some dipsh@t on ebay. Of course he said it had just been “completely rebuilt.”

They always say that. What they don’t say is that it was done by a 8-year old.

Anyway, I got to work tearing the thing apart and proceeded with my plan to build a kickstart shovel chopper. That was the bike at later became the “rusty buzzard,” the first bike of mine that got any real press. I wound up in The Horse and Biker magazine. When I built that bike, I was good at building frames and sheet metal,

but not confident enough to do the motor myself. Let’s just say that I paid the price for not just getting a few books and doing it myself.

The first guy I brought it to was located in Ansonia, CT, about 45 minutes away from me. I won’t give away his name but let’s just say I got pretty screwed. He charged me almost $3,000 to rebuild it and when I picked it up he said “If you want to go for a ride on Saturday, start kicking it on Friday.” Umm, ok. I was younger then and didn’t really know what that meant, so I took it. It never ran even close to right after that. He was a real idiot and I paid the price for trusting him. I think he is out

of business now.

The next people to work on it were a local H-D dealership that subbed the work out to another local mechanic, a guy from New Zealand apparently. The H-D dealerships around here don’t even know what a shovel is, unfortunately. When it came back from that guy, it was even more screwed up. Honestly it didn’t really run at all. I was about to throw in the towel at this point, but I decided to try one more guy. This man is William “Bones” Burkhart at CT Performance Center. He was a true gentleman to me from the beginning. He gladly took my bike in and within a day had the top end apart and fixed, and at

a price I couldn’t believe. When I kicked it over it lit right off first kick! At this point I honestly didn’t think that was even possible! Not only did he fix it, but he was totally open to me and showed me what was wrong (a lot). Since then I have learned everything about motors from this man and am proud to say that because of him I am now building my own motors, 4 years later.

Anyway, I rode the “rusty buzzard” for about 2 years, and then decided to build something new. My skills had evolved and I

was ready to upgrade the bike accordingly.

The motor and tranny were pulled and put into the wishbone frame. I also went back to Bones and we made the motor a shovel/ pan with STD heads. I did some fin work on the cylinders and heads. I build up the fins with weld then grind them down to create new profiles. That was the first time I had tried that, but I have since done it on more motors. I moved the plugs to the opposite side of the head as well. We also lightened the flywheels and static balanced them at 55%. If you have never ridden a static

balanced motor, you need to. This is a lot different than a “dynamically balanced” motor, or a “counter balanced motor.”

Most people think their crate motor is balanced because it says so in the catalog.

Believe me, its not! This motor is awesome and you can rev it right to the max without your eyes vibrating out of your head.

People that ride the air cooled Ducati’s know what I mean, it’s that smooth.

The gas tanks are 3 gallon fat bobs, but I made most of the other parts.

controls, taillight, risers, bars, grips, brake levers, seat pan, etc were all handmade. I used a lot of stainless steel because I’m right by the coast and the salt air tends to screw up chromed surfaces. Robert Pradke is the official E-Fab painter and as usual, he didn’t let me down. I told him I wanted white and brown, and then let him rip.

That’s the way we work, I give him a color, and he does the rest. I believe in letting artists do their thing, so when it comes to jobs I can’t do (like paint), I don’t want to cramp his style. He is a truly skilled man

and has the ability to do basic jobs as well as insane, intricate ones. He is well known from the various biker build offs (five I think?), but he hasn’t let it go to his head.

I love this bike and it is rolling part of the history of my company. I ride it constantly and know it better than any bike I’ve built since. It is for sale but only to the right person.
