Choosing The Right Facility For Long-Term Care Aging can bring many chal lenges. It’s not unusual for seniors to experience reduced mobility, memory difficulties, or health issues that require a living environment that includes sup port with daily activities San Mateo County is a popular retirement destination that offers many long-term care options. The challenge is choosing the right one for the care needed. Senior Care Authority is a placement agency that can help you determine the level of care needed, as well as assist in find ing the ideal facility that fits those needs. It can also help lo cate other resources. SCA offers the following help ful tips and resources. Assisted Living vs. Nursing Homes or Memory Care Assisted living facilities are aimed at seniors who are rea sonably mobile and generally in good health. The accommodations allow seniors to live independent ly, while accessing personal care assistance, meal service, and other day-to-day support, as needed.Memory care communities are similar but have more calming and structured environments. They offer enhanced supervision by caregivers who are trained in caring for and supporting those who are living with the effects of Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. These seniors may be prone to wandering or ep isodes of confusion, so additional security is a typical feature in memory care communities. Nursing homes are for seniors with more severe health difficul ties. They’re staffed 24 hours a day by skilled nurses who can administer medication, provide wound and IV care, and offer other medical services. Nursing homes normally cost more than other care options due to the extra care provided. Some communities offer a con tinuum of care service. A senior can stay at the same community for the long term, even if their needs change. For those who might have anxiety about moving or changing their routine, re maining in the same community offers peace of mind. Financing Long-Term Care Long-term care can be expen sive. Many seniors rely on Medic aid and its associated waivers to cover some of the costs. Those who are fortunate enough to own their own homes may be able to sell their property to finance their time in a nursing home. California offers many sup port programs, including: Califor nia Department of Aging Reloca tion, VA Aid and Attendance Ben efits, and Financial Assistance for Your Elderly Parents.
Preparing for the Move
Keep in mind that leaving the family home can be a big emotion al step. Seniors are often faced with having to downsize. Allowing them a choice, if possible, of what to keep can alleviate some of their stress.Once a facility is chosen, it may be able to recommend mov ers who specialize in this type of relocation. They will measure the new residence and advise, as an example, of what furniture will fit and assist in selling or disposal of what won’t. Improved Quality of Life

8 BORN TO AGE PENINSULA — SPRING 2022 Planning Index cont’d Reverse Mortgages Done Thoughtfully Many seniors have used reverse mortgage loan proceeds to travel, pay-off credit card bills, help their children, cover long-term disability expenses or just live more comfortably. More than 50 years ago, reverse mortgage loans were created to allow seniors to remain in their homes and enjoy access to some of their saved equity. Over the years, there have been many improvements made to the structure of these loans, which are insured by the Federal Housing Administration. Reverse mortgage loan products available to homeowners today capture the spirit of the original loans, but have added the flexibility and transparency to help safeguard the financial security of borrowers. Born to Age PeninsulA — sPring 2022 9 Hiking Near and Far Over 60
Finding trails: Hiking Project Identifying flora and fauna: Seek by iNaturalist A Hiking Buddy Once you are ready for longer hikes, it’s a good idea not to ven ture too far alone for your safety. Besides, hiking with a buddy — or a group — can add to the experience.Ifyoucan’t find a hiking partner, ask around. Check out local MeetUp groups for older adults or beginner hikers. Do a search for local hiking clubs, too. Hiking is great exercise and a fun way to explore. Whether you keep it local, start exploring your state, or even expand across the country, you will add lots of mem ories and likely friends, too.

Trekking Poles Trekking poles are lightweight, adjustable metal poles to steady you on downhill slopes or uneven terrain. They come in handy, es pecially on muddy trails. Trail Apps There are apps to help you expand your repertoire of places to go. Start by searching online for local hikes, but it is handy to have the trail on your smart phone. Not only can you access trail information, but you can browse recent reviews to find weather conditions, when to avoid crowds, and even identify wildlife in different areas. Some of the bestFreeapps:hiking: AllTrails
If you have never enjoyed hik ing before, or at least not recent ly, you may have questions. Here are some pointers to help you em bark on this healthy exercise. Getting Started Seniors, especially those with health conditions, should consult their doctors before beginning any exercise program. If you’re new to the sport, start slowly. The point of hiking is to enjoy the scenery and fresh air, while getting exercise. You will gradually increase your speed and distance naturally as you be come more fit. Take a photo of the map at the trail head for reference, and you can be on your way! Go as far as you are comfortable and remem ber that you will have to return just as far. Clothing and Gear You do not need a bunch of fan cy-schmancy gear to head down your first trail. Just wear tennis shoes and clothing appropriate for the season. Taking sunscreen, insect repellent, and water is rec ommended.Onceyou decide you like hik ing, you may be ready to upgrade your gear, beginning with good hikingTakingshoes.care of your feet will be worth the extra cost of sturdy boots or shoes. They will protect your feet and give support if you hike any rough terrain. Add a pair of socks, such as Merino wool blends that absorb moisture in all temperatures.Youmightalso invest in a pair of hiking pants with zip-off legs, which allow you to make an easy change from long pants to shorts and vice versa as the weather warms or cools. They should be made of a quick-dry, lightweight fabric with a comfortable waist band and lots of pockets. A long sleeved, quick-dry shirt can serve several purposes. The sleeves protect against sun and insects, as well as provide warmth if the weather cools. Top off your outfit with a hat or visor to keep the sun at bay. Include polarized sunglasses, and your eyeballs will appreciate it. Day Packs As the distance you intend to hike lengthens, the more you may need to carry with you — in com fort. A good day pack has padded shoulder straps, hip and chest belts, and a pouch to carry a bladder for water. Packs come in different lengths and sizes to fit your back (many are adjustable) and conform to all body shapes. Some include a pocket for a bladder, which is a plastic two- or three-liter pouch for water with a tube that comes out and extends within easy reach. A bite valve on the end makes water available at your fingertips whenever you want it without risking spillage.

Planning Your Final Wishes By Eva Barrows
After a friend’s mother passed away, she asked me if I had a will in place. She then explained that she wasn’t asking me about the distribution of my assets but about my final wishes. She appreciated that her moth er left her a clear plan, detailing her funeral wishes and even her own obituary. Her instructions gave my friend time to grieve without worrying about what her mother would have wanted. I thought this was excellent advice. My parents are seniors, and knowing how they want to be remembered would provide peace of mind for them and me. I did some internet research on how to write your own obitu ary and record your final wishes. There are many resources on these topics. Legacy.com’s “Fu neral Planning Guide” does a comprehensive job outling the end-of-life choices, such as locat ing important documents and preplanning funeral decisions. The hardest part was telling my parents, but my mom agreed it was a good idea. I created packets for each of us containing printouts of the guide and infor mation on writing an obituary. This end-of-life planning prompted my mom to find her life insurance statement, her safe deposit box key, and copies of my parents’ will. Looking at the will, she discovered their assets had changed and their family had grown. Updating the will became a priority.Aswewent through the funer al planning checklist, we discov ered we all wanted to be cremat ed, but the way we wanted our ashes han dled varied. We entered our individ ual wishes on our planning guides. We didn’t plan every detail at once, but we did start an important conversa tion. The planning guide gave us a framework to plan ahead. End-of-life planning can be an awkward subject to bring up with loved ones, but there is a sense of relief about preparing in advance. Making your wishes known, gives you some level of control over what happens when you are gone and alleviates the burden on those grieving your loss. It’s never too early to start planning. Eva Barrows is a San Francisco Peninsula-based freelance writer and editor.

A Los Altos History Museum Program When it comes to living out our senior years, where we live, and with whom, is important to our well-being.Thisspring, in an exhibit titled “Every Wrinkle Tells a Story: Intertwining Lives,” Los Altos History Museum featured Maud Daujean’s photographs and stories. A French photographer, videographer and storyteller, Daujean wanted to learn more about Los Altos and its people. She spent a year photograph ing and interviewing 35 elders in the community, capturing her subject’s memories and how Los Altos managed to retain its vil lageLocalfeel.figures, such as Janet and Sam Harding, Chris Nagao, Dinesh Desai and Nomi Trapnell, were among the faces on display. Their videotaped testimonies included Saturday matinees at the Los Altos Theater, harvesting apricots, and the rise of Hewl ett-Packard.“Allthesubjects in the exhi bition are 65 to 100 years old,” Museum Educator Georgianna SheaShesaid.pointed out that where we live when we age is an issue we are all going to face. “By working together now, we help not only this generation, but future gener ations to experience happier and healthier lives in places they call home.”“Stories should not be forgot ten,” Daujean said. “I hope the new generation will never forget to ask about the past. I hope they’ll ask their parents or grand parents to tell them stories of what happened when they were young.”Another program held in conjunction with this exhib it, “There’s No Place Like Home,” shared what cities are doing to become agefriendly for happy, sustainable intergenerational communities “Through urban planning, Ac cessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), and Life Plan Communities, like The Terraces in Los Altos, seniors are able to age in place,” said Shea. “These minor changes in a city or town allow older people to live in a home they’re familiar with, in a community they love.” Plan to visit its next exhibit, “Fabulous Food of the 30s and 40s,” July 14 - August 28.
