What is Heritage? It is a priceless benefaction, an inheritance. And why is it important? When something is being passed down, its history, values and significance is a passed down as well - thus a heritage must be treasured and protected. Not only it becomes our responsibility to guard it, we must also appreciate it and enjoy every bit of its attributes and characteristics. In Sabah, we have many heritages. We are all very fortunate to be able to have the things that stood against time, and still lives to this very day. These businesses have survived for 50 years and more, so let’s look into its fascinating history.
Standing Strong for More Than 50 Years The Heritage Enterprises of Sabah Aji – Iconic Bartender of Kota Kinabalu The history of Tong Hing Group is unquestionably compelling and inspiring – but one cannot hear about Tong Hing Group without knowing about a man named Aji. His story is just as amazing and riveting, as he had worked for the company itself since way back in its golden days! Mr. Chai Yu Sin, or Aji, the name he is infamously known for, may be the oldest bartender in the whole South East Asia. Coming from humble beginnings, Aji joined Gardenia Restaurant in 1959 as a waiter when it was under the management of Tong Hing Group. Nothing held him back in his passion for learning, and Aji worked hard in improving English communcation, knowledge, and skills throughout his employment with the restaurant His efforts proved to be triumphant when he eventually became a busboy, then a cashier, a barback and finally a position that earns him as an iconic figure in Kota Kinabalu – a bartender. Like fine wine, his experience matured and expanded over the years, which can be evident when you take a sip of the quality and exquisite wonder that is his concoction of cocktails. In his time as a bartender, Aji has served those of royalty and greatness - the Queen Elizabeth of England, Prince Phillip, legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, Lady Mountbatten, and Sabah’s first two Chief Ministers Tun Datu Haji Mustapha bin Datu Harun as well as Tun Muhammad Fuad Stephens has all been his patrons. He has seen the coming and going of many memorable moments in his working journey as a bartender, in turn making him part of valuable history in Sabah. Aji exciting life were also features in the documentary video name “Heart of Gaya Street” by William Chiang.

With Aji perhaps we can learn a thing or two, when asked why or what makes him stay with the company for that long? He says my boss ( referring to the late Datuk Wong Tze Fatt) was a very good boss, besides I enjoy and love my job. Because of this job I got to know a lot of friends from around the world. A few of overseas friends frequently come over here to pay me a visit, some of them are the people I met in the 1950s and it can be emotional sometime he added. “all the years that I’ved been spent in these company is been a good memories to me”.

Basically he learn the art of cocktails from the scratch, A Singaporean colleague taught him about the drinks and Cocktails Mix. He also read the art of being a good bartender through Books. As for the English language, he learned and improved it throughout the employment with the Restaurant. He leave us a quote to ponder.. “If Your Head Is Small , Don’t Wear A Big Head Otherwise the Wind Will Blow It Away”
TONG HING SUPERMARKET (TONG HING HOLDINGS SDN BHD) No. 55, Gaya Street, Kota Kinabalu
Tong Hing began as a coffee shop located on Bond Street in the 1920s that was run by Mr. Wong Toon Hiong. At age 5, his son Wong Tze Fatt and other family members joined him in 1926. Datuk Wong had a great vision, and labor of his passion, tenacity and willingness to learn is evident in how big the Tong Hing Holdings expanded today. The history of Tong Hing Supermarket and Datuk Wong goes, he had learned how to run the coffee shop and how to do accounts from his father. Back in the day, because it was located nearby a railway station, the shop was thriving with customers. And a time after that, the shop changed to a grocery store. Datuk Wong’s father passed on in 1943, and that was when he took over the shop. After the war, Jesselton (Kota Kinabalu) was established into the capital town of Sabah, earning prestige in which the shop then became Tong Hing Supermarket in 1959.
YUIT CHEONG COFFEE SHOP Lot 50, Jalan Pantai, Kota Kinabalu
One of the oldest coffee shops in town, Kedai Kopi Yuit Cheong has stood for over a century. The history of how Kedai Kopi Yuit Cheong became what it is today is nothing short of awe-inspiring and incredible. Yuit Cheong was first built on Gaya Island in 1896. A fire destroyed the shops on Gaya Island in 1897, including Yuit Cheong, causing them to relocate to Jesselton, a town we now know as Kota Kinabalu. Then, Yuit Cheong’s proprietor . was Leong Kah Cheng, and they sold grocery goods as well back then. It was then taken over by Leong Kah Ching.

How Yuit Cheong Coffee Shop started off was when a cook from the Shantung Province missed his ship when he was sight-seeing in town. He then sought help from Shang Chau (a family member of the owners of Yuit Cheong) after having nowhere to go. And when he was at Yuit Cheong Coffee Shop, he noticed that the workers needed more refined teachings on baking. The cook then taught the workers very valuable bakery skills that they use to this day. This in turn attracted big crowds then who wished for delicious fresh bread made with quality at Yuit Cheong Coffee Shop. Needless to say, the shop became instantly famous after that! Yuit Cheong relocated permanently to Jalan Pantai in 1969, where they reside today and is run by Leong Che Chen, aged 86. Handed down by three of their family generations, Yuit Cheong Coffee Shop witnessed the great changes and growth of Sabah over the past 100 years through the rule of
NEW TEO SENG (CHOP TEO SENG) No. 118, Gaya Street, Kota Kinabalu When walking at Gaya Street, New Teo Seng (Chop Teo Seng) is a shop you definitely won’t miss. Reminiscent of the 1950s, the shop retained its looks which adds a vintage appeal to it. New Teo Seng was originally located in front of the Horizon Hotel Kota Kinabalu. The shop sold multipurpose items as well as hardware items back in the day, and later offers household food items. To this day, they still maintain their wholesale distribution of grocery supplies to the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu like they did in the past. The family that owns descendent, and was run by Mr Chua Chang Teo. He was a sailor from China, who often make stops at Singapore and the land of Borneo. And now his daughter, Mdm Chua, who is now aged 61 years old together with her son Edmund Fung is slowly rebranding the shop into a souvenir shop for tourists and locals alikeNew Teo Seng (Chop Teo Seng) is of Teo-chew
HIAP AUN HARDWARE SHOP No. 40, Jalan Pantai, Kota Kinabalu
The origins of Hiap Aun Hardware Shop was that they actually sold grocery goods in the past, and was located opposite Horizon Hotel Kota Kinabalu. This hardware shop is now managed by twin brothers Mr Oh, which they took over from their parents in the 1980s. After evolving into a hardware shop, they now sell reasonable priced hardware materials; you can also find some old advertising posters remaining in the shop still intact. The twin brothers now enjoy Harley Davidson bikes, where you can see one displayed in their shop!

Coffee Shops in Sabah have mainly been built by mostly the Hainanese people ever since the establishment of the country up until now. Opened by a former teacher Matthey Leong in 1962, the heritage shop FORTUNE has been the must-go visit and became culture for the local folks as well as working people nearby to have their breakfast here. Customers from their golden age still visit this coffee shop and seen in their faces is them reminiscing its glory days. For tourists that want to witness the “glory” of this shop, should be here before 9.00am during the breakfast hours. Cheap ready cooked noodles and stuffed tofu is the rewarding meal served here along with aromatic local coffee, Teh Tarik, and a sandwich made with Hainan bread with sweet coconut cream and margarine. The motion and sound of FORTUNE is an atmosphere worth every second. The family shop is now run by the eldest son in the family, and we hope the shop would go on for another century. ildlife tours need not be long days spent driving along bumpy country roads and mucking through the rainforest for a glimpse of a rare and endangered species. The Klias Wetlands is a mangrove forest reserve located about 110km south of the city with large tracts of mangrove, riverine and swamp forests acting as a floodplain for the mighty Padas River, and other smaller rivers and canals. The Klias River that flows gently through the floodplain attracts the most visitors with its clear waters and scenic route towards the sea. A typical tour to the Klias Wetlands starts in the afternoon with a leisurely drive to enjoy Sabah’s picturesque countryside before arriving just in time for tea at the jetty. As the boats get ready, visitors stretch their legs and indulge in some sweet and savoury delights from the tea table.

Cruising the Klias River is perfectly timed to take advantage of a peculiar habit of an equally peculiar animal that inhabit the mangrove forest here. Groups of proboscis monkeys make a boisterous show of settling down by the riverside just before sunset while boatmen deftly manouever their boats to give tourists a closer view of this amazing animals in their natural habitat.

CRUISE The long pendulous noses of the male proboscis monkeys, and their distended pot bellies, look comical yet incredibly fascinating at the same time. There are all-male bachelor groups as well as harems dominated by an alpha male and his ‘wives’ and ‘children’ Other riverside residents that may be spotted are long-tailed macaques, crocodiles, monitor lizards, tree snakes and birds. When there is a lull in wildlife activity, take the opportunity to enjoy the surrounding views with rustic village huts dotting the landscape, buffaloes meandering into the river to wallow in its coolness, or perhaps a bit of line fishing the way the locals do. The wildlife cruise ends with a scrumptious dinner of food cooked with ingredients sourced fresh from the rivers and surrounding farmlands. Simple yet flavourful, food cooked fresh and eaten outdoors is one of the best ways to savour Sabah’s culinary delights.
As night falls, and the proboscis monkeys have made their bed for the night, other creatures come out to play. Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) undertakes and promotes high quality research, training and outreach in the fields of marine science and aquaculture. The Institute has emerged as a venue for pursuing excellence in demand-driven advance research, and synthesis and dissemination of knowledge across a wide range of these subjects in regional, national and international contexts. BMRI is a centre of excellence at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, besides being the Focal Point (for Malaysia) of the International Ocean Institute. Location of the Institute at the seafront, with a jetty to the sea, berthing facilities for research boats, finfish and crustacean hatcheries, well-equipped laboratories and an attractive Aquarium and Marine Museum are some of the advantages for education and research, and a coherent functioning of this center of excellence. There is a great deal of synergy among the various research programs when it comes to sharing of knowhow and jointly pursuing a problem. Thus, cage aquaculture receives inputs from marine science related to coastal hydrodynamics and harmful algal blooms. Aquaculture also relies on biotechnology in modulation of immunity, disease management and environmental remediation. On the other hand, hatchery technology developed by the aquaculture programs helps in sea farming, sea ranching and population restoration. Knowledge generated by all these subjects is used to develop climate change adaptation strategies and frameworks for sustainable development. FEATURE | 13

A dedicated group of people, the Sabah Surfing Association, has been organizing surf clinics, surf day out, surf competitions and surf festivals for the past three years to create awareness about the sport. The events were held at places where you can actually surf. That are many locations to surf in Sabah unbeknownst to you and me – particularly, in the charming town of Kudat. When you mention Kudat, Tanjung Simpang Mengayau or the Tip of Borneo immediately comes to our minds. It is what the town is infamously known for, a spectacular attraction to travelers. The white sandy beaches, pristine waters in aquamarine, and panoramic views of the sea are a magnificent sight at Tanjung Simpang Mengayau. But if you look closer at the waves, you will see magic. Surfing becomes alive here as local Rungus boys from Kudat, along with local Sabahans ride the waves spiritedly and unwaveringly. According to Sabah Surfing Association, Kudat’s waves is at par with Bali surfing – and that’s amazing because Bali is one of the best surfing spot in the world. The type of waves you can ride here in Kudat are beach breaks and reef breaks. The beach break is where the waves break on the sandy seabed, the best to start surfing on. The reef break is a wave that breaks over a coral reef or a rock seabed, the classic ones that you can see on the surfing videos. Beginners or intermediate, all surfers are able to have an enjoyable experience here. Kudat may be the same as Bali, but there is one thing about it that set itself apart and make surfing a big difference. The beaches are secluded, private and untouched. It is not crowded. You might wonder why that is an advantage? For surfers, that is what they crave, what they live for! That’s why they keep looking for new places to surf. When it is not crowded, there is more freedom for you to ride the waves, having it all to yourself and own it uninterrupted. For them, it’s everything! For the year 2017, exciting plans are in the making for surfing in Kudat. A highly anticipated surf festival will be held, aiming to turn it into a surf capital in Asia. The Landy Below The Wind On November 12th, 2016 , the Sabah Land Rover Club (SLRC) was
officially launched by Guest of Honor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, advisor to SLRC and the Mayor of Kota Kinabalu City at the Sime Darby Auto Connexion Land Rover Kota Kinabalu Showroom. Attended by more than 300 Land Rover enthusiasts from as far as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Brunei, Labuan, Sarawak and around Sabah. The show was also attended by YM Dato Dr Tengku Zainal Adlin, the Patron of SLRC and Chairman of Sabah Parks Board of Trustees, Gordon Yap, the advisor of SLRC and the General Manager of Sabah Tourism Board, representatives from Land Rover Jaguar Malaysia, Sime Darby Auto Connexion and members of the media and press. Among the activities held on that day were a Land Rover show displaying beautiful Land Rover vehicles from the classic series to present day models. Among the highlights were the very last Defender 110 station wagon unit in Malaysia which was registered on November 11th, 2016, a final limited edition Land Rover Defender Adventure Edition (only unit in Malaysia) , 60th Anniversary Defender SVX and a fully restored 1956 Land Rover Series 1 which finally came back to be displayed in the Land Rover showroom after been delivered to the customer 60 years ago during the British North Borneo era before the formation of Malaysia. The Sabah Land Rover Club was formed in celebration of Land Rover, it’s long history in Sabah and what it means to all of us. 2 types of memberships were offered, life and ordinary memberships, the life memberships are offered by the club at RM2,000 per membership with only a one-time subscription whereas the ordinary membership is RM300 per membership inclusive of one-time registration fee of RM200 and RM100 annual subscription fee. In the president’s speech, Datuk Henry Hing, the explained that the club’s motto is Building Unity in Diversity and the SLRC’s foundation is built upon 4 pillars or core values – SOCIETY, N A T U R E , ENTERPRISE & FUN.
He further explained that since Land Rover’s early arrival to Sabah, they have always served the community, the club would like to continue to uphold this core value and continue to support community projects and promote unity, friendship and family values with our members and partners. In support of this pillar, since the formation of the club in September 8, 2016, the club has done 4 successful CSR projects. Two projects with the Kota City Hall headed by Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, the mayor of Kota Kinabalu to provide computers and to help repair 2 schools at SK Ruminding Inanam and SK Tombongon Manggatal, one project with Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu South and HSBC Sports Club Medical Outreach Kanibongan in the Pitas District and one project with the District of Penampang headed by Luvita Koisun, the District Officer of Penampang and Umno Penampang chief Datuk John Ambrose to help one hardcore poor family in the district of Penampang where they carried out a gotong-royong to spruce up the house and provide necessary assistance just in time to celebrate Christmas. For enterprise pillars, SLRC have plan to hold 2 signature annual events, the Borneo 4WD & Outdoor Show in June and The Land Rover Jamboree / Festival in December.
