Every Heart Attack Is A Small Earthquake

On the 5th of June 2015, Malaysia experienced a magnitude 6.0 earthquake, centred in Ranau, Sabah. It was the strongest earthquake in Malaysia since 1976.

This tragedy resulted in the death of 18 people on Mount Kinabalu, most of whom were on a school trip from Singapore.

Earthquakes are very rare in our country. Malaysians don’t spend the day wondering and worrying about them, and so the 5th June earthquake caught us unawares.

In the aftermath of this tragedy the newly opened Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu Hospital became the custodian for the injured visitors from Mount Kinabalu. Several had major injuries and required urgent surgery. Thankfully all the injured who came to Gleneagles survived and were returned home.

Seeing the effects up close, it struck me how similar earthquakes are to heart attacks. No one anticipates a heart attack. They often occur without warning. They are devastating to families and loved ones. They result in long

term injury to a person. And they require prompt, urgent medical care.

There are important differences.

Heart attacks are common. They are by far the leading cause of death worldwide. Every year in Malaysia, about 29000 people will die from heart disease. Those who survive may have further heart problems as a result of the heart attack.

And yet, most people don’t spend the day worrying about heart attacks. Even when a person starts having chest pain or difficulty breathing, the idea that this could be heart related is too frightening to consider. It is only when the pain or breathing problems become unbearable, do people come to hospital. The average time it takes for a Malaysian to come to a hospital after a heart attack is between 4 to 5 hours.

20% of heart attacks victims come in more than 8 hours after the attack. This is a shame, as the sooner you come to a hospital with a heart attack, the more effective the treatment and the higher the chance of surviving.

What Is A Heart Attack?

Most heart attacks occur when a blood clot forms inside the arteries of the heart. These clots are more likely to happen if you have cardiovascular risk factors. This includes being male, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or if a close family member has heart trouble.

Once the clot blocks the blood flow, that part of the heart begins to die. This usually causes chest pain, but sometimes (especially if you have diabetes) you may only have difficulty breathing. The part of the heart that is dying will be unable to work as well as the rest of the heart.

Patients complain of dizziness, weakness, heavy sweating, heart racing and fainting. Walking or doing normal activity becomes difficult.

If the blocked artery is not reopened, that part of the heart will become permanently damaged. This usually happens within 6 to 8 hours. From the moment the artery is blocked, it becomes a race against time to reopen the blockage. continue on page 4

Other times, it is our reluctance to ask for help or support. There is no stigma in asking for help, an action which we often associate with incompetence and failure. This is a mindset we as a society need to change. Be it in your professional or personal life, we all need some form of help or support. That’s why a good support system is vital in living a healthy life.

With that, I hope you will find some inspiration in these pages for the remainder of the year. So let’s go out and live!

How Can You Treat A Heart Attack?

In the first 2 hours, the clot is soft like toothpaste. When it is soft, a drug can be injected to dissolve the clot. This is called “thrombolysis”. If given in the first two hours, thrombolysis works very well. One drawback is that the effect occurs throughout the entire body. Sometimes, this can result in bleeding complications, the worst of which is bleeding into the brain.

After 2 hours, the clot begins to harden. At this point, thrombolysis is no longer as effective. Studies show that if given after 2 hours, the clot has only dissolved in 50% of people given the drug. The other 50% will have a full blown heart attack. In Malaysia, thrombolysis is the main method of treating heart attacks.

The best treatment for

unblocking the clot is actually

doing primary coronary angioplasty. This involves using

specialized tubes which are passed up to the arteries of the heart and inflating balloons to “squash” the clot and reopen the artery. If a narrowing remains, a stainless steel metal scaffold (called a stent) can be inserted into the artery to restore normal blood flow. In comparison to thrombolysis, emergency angioplasty results in successful removal of the clot in 98% of cases. Another advantage of angioplasty is the risk of bleeding into the brain is extremely low.

X-ray facility, a trained interventional cardiologist, experienced cardiac team and nursing staff. This is not widely available in Malaysia. In countries where these facilities are available, primary angioplasty is the treatment of choice.

What Happens

“An Ounce Of Prevention Is Worth A Pound Of Cure”

After A Heart Attack?

If the blocked artery is opened quickly enough, the amount of damage to the heart will be small. This is the best outcome, and most people in this group will resume their lives as normal. If the artery is blocked for too long, the damage will be extensive. The heart becomes very weak. Fluid builds up in the lungs and the legs. The likelihood of dying is high. For those who recover, they are usually limited in their day to day activities by breathlessness.

Perhaps the best way to treat a heart attack is to ensure you never have one in the first place.

All persons who suffer a heart attack will be on life-long medication, regardless of the treatment they receive. Almost all will be on a blood thinning medication, a cholesterol medication, and usually 2 other medications to lower the risk of further heart attacks from occurring.

Of course, identifying and treating these risks requires a visit to a doctor; which requires time and the enthusiasm to do so! Most hospitals and medical centres offer screening services which can measure cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure. Other tests such as ECG, treadmill test, echocardiography and Cardiac CT may be performed as necessary.

For most, some lifestyle changes will be required. Those who smoke should stop. Regular exercise is recommended, at least 3 sessions of running, jogging or cycling a week for 40 minutes. Cardiac rehabilitation is available in some hospitals, and is strongly advised.

Identification and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors have been shown to be very effective in preventing heart attacks from occurring. Many studies have confirmed that strict control of high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol will significantly reduce the risk of cardiac events by as much as 40%.

The death of 18 people on Mount Kinabalu was a terrible tragedy. It captured the minds and attention of all Malaysians. Every day in Malaysia, 80 people die from heart disease. The fact that this is considered “normal” and not newsworthy is also a terrible tragedy.

As light and easy as it may sound, Kupi Kupi’s main phrase holds a much profound weight to everyone on its 6 star line up that make up the voice for the station -

Dudu, Greg, Nera, Janry, Velvet and Niz. Coming from different backgrounds, these announcers hope to strengthen and shape our collective identity by connecting the communities and harnessing our local potential---be it for personal goals such as talents and entertainment, to have an exchange on current issues and solutions, or talks on ideas on sustainable livelihoods and employment, their goal is to impact and empower locals for positive improvement.

The team from Borneo 360 had the opportunity for an afternoon kupi kupi session with announcers Nera, Niz and Velvet to get their take on how things have been since the launch of the station earlier this year, in January.

Community radio differs from commercial radios as it is aimed towards a specific geography and demographic, in which content reflects local issues, concerns, and culture. Topics on discussion ranges from customs and traditions to social-economic development, global and social trends, health and nutrition as well as agriculture. To encourage listeners to be active creators and contributors of these discussion and topics, listeners are welcome and encouraged to partake via being a caller or posting on their facebook, which acts as their main social media platform.

As a home-grown singer/songwriter herself, Velvet understands the hardship of trying to break into the Malaysian music scene with an identity that doesn’t resonate with everyone. “Sudah berabis buat, tapi tidak kena layan. “Kita Kita juga baini.“ As simple as that, an invitation to catch up with friends, talk about life and all there is to it. That’s the casual and free-flowing environment they aim to create so that the communities and its people will be comfortable to talk about matters than effect them and their families.

Talent is talent, regardless of where you’re from. That is what she hopes local aspiring artists will take from the stations constant support of local music. It may take some time to appeal to a larger audience, but with an airplay of 80% Sabahan songs, there will always be a place for them with Kupi Kupi FM as a stepping stone for exposure and experience.

Language plays a key role within Kupi Kupi FM. With the use of English, Malay, Kadazan, Chinese and local lingo, they aim to be relatable to everyone from the city condos to remote rural areas. As a tool to engage, educate and encourage, our shared language makes up a lot of our shared identity. Empowering the community begins with building a connection, and at the base of it language will be the bridge.

Speaking up to four languages, Niz is a textbook example of the diversity in Sabah. Brimming with personality and wit, Niz mans the morning show Bangun Bogia Kinabalu with fellow announcer Greg. The morning segment begins from 6.00am – 10.00am, accompanying you throughout your morning from traffic to desk. When asked what their tagline Kita Kita Juga Baini personally means to him, FEATURE | 07

Nera explains that it’s not always fun and games though. On her segment Ki Ki Ba she tackles topics focusing on motherhood and children.

“Some topics are hard to discuss and have gotten me pretty emotional on air before. But this is real life and somehow or another, we need to face them together.”

Kita Kita Juga Baini also evokes a sense of belonging and comradeship. That we are all in this together, a support system that comes naturally through our shared heritage.

Outside the air-conditioned recording rooms, the team gets further involved with the community through hands-on projects. With several projects in the pipeline for the rest of 2016, their latest project in April saw members of the Royal Military College alumni along with Kupi Kupi FM visiting five villages in Ranau to install fresh water tanks.

“We had the chance to talk to the community and our listeners. About their lives and living conditions, on their concerns and needs. It really is eye opening being on the ground.”

Kupi Kupi FM is a vision child from Centre for Strategic Engagement (CENSE), a private research outfit, that began Operasi Tataba in Sabah in 2012. The operation was conceived with the aim of growing useful skills and productive self-reliance to eventually blossom into socioeconomic sustainability for the many communities of Sabah, especially those deep in the interior.

A sanctuary for songs, stories and heritage-- an ambitious endeavour for Sabah’s first ever community radio. And they are definitely not afraid to touch the sticky subjects… #RealTalk.

Meet 5-year-old Henry and his 9-year old brother, Adren, from

Kampung Sungai Magandai, a remote village in the Kota Marudu District presently only accessible by off-road vehicles. Henry and Adren do not enjoy the modern pleasures of iPads, Disney channels and things that our children take for granted in their daily life. Sunday means making two wooden swords from pieces of wood and a game of sword-fighting begins.

Henry and Adren are part of the 6 children of Kokop, aged 48 and his wife Marinok, 34.

The eldest daughter Nervina (20) works as a babysitter in Kota Marudu and her younger brother Zidan (17), currently works as a factory worker in Kota Kinabalu for a wage of only RM300 a month. Their 3rd child aged 15 also works as a babysitter in Tandek for a minimal wage of RM300 per month. Their youngest daughter, Elviana is only 2 years old.

wild vegetables gathered from the forest. They have no piped water nor electricity in their house. Water is sourced from the river below and cooking is done with firewood where chicken meat and other meats are only for special occasions.

These are some of the current living conditions of the 100 homes of the Dusun Sonsogon people of Kg Sungai Magandai which has an estimated population of about 600 people. The lives of these 100 homes are about to change for the better.

Kokop’s house is a 3-kilometre walk from Kg. Sungai Magandai and is currently in a very rundown state. The roof is full of leaks and walls are made of tree barks. Kokop barely makes less than RM50 a month from the sale of Kitchen area with leaking roof FEATURE | 11

SWEPA aims to bring women entrepreneurs and professionals to the forefront in the economic development of the state and nation.

Headed by SWEPA Barefoot Solar Project Organising Chairlady Datin Jeanette Tambakau, and SWEPA Deputy President Datuk Aminah Ambrose, SWEPA is working together with Barefoot College in India, founded by Mr. Bunker Roy more than 40 years ago with a geographic focus on the least developed countries, to train women worldwide as solar engineers, innovators and educators, who then return to their villages to bring light and learning to their community.

The SWEPA Barefoot Solar Project 1.0, launched in 16 May 2014 has successfully trained one illiterate grandmother Tarihing Masanim aged 42, who hails from the remote village of Kg Sonsogon Magandai, who became a solar engineer. She was sent to Barefoot College in Tilonia, India to undergo 6 months of intensive training. Solar mama Tarihing said she often faced

difficulty in communication and technical challenges, and most of all missing her family from Sabah.

However, her dream of giving a brighter future for her younger generations at home kept her motivated and she completed her training successfully and has since lighted more than 100 homes in her village.

This project was successfully implemented and supported by project partners Barefoot College and the Government of India for the training, the GEF Small Grants Programme by UNDP, Asian Forestry Company for logistics and communication, Sabah Credit Corporation for the sponsorship of the workshop building materials, Partners of Community Organizations in Sabah, Raleigh International who helped build the Rural Electronic Workshop building, Sabah State and Federal Government and official media partner Daily Express for media coverage.

The Swepa Barefoot Solar Project 2.0 Moving on with the overwhelming success of the SWEPA Barefoot Solar Project 1.0 and support from its various partners, SWEPA has had

identified a second village named Kampung Sungai Magandai which is 2 kilometres further away from Kampung Sonsogon Magandai.

They managed to identify another two grandmothers, Rusni Singkamung and Gining Jaineh, both 44 in age. They have successfully completed their training at Barefoot College in India recently and have come home to light up their village homes which include the home of Henry and Adren.

On September 4th, 2016, the SWEPA team, with the help of the Sabah Fire and Rescue Services Department (BOMBA) has successfully airlifted 241 boxes of Solar Lighting Systems weighing more than 4 tons with the BOMBA helicopter piloted by Captain Ahmad Fissol Ismail. In the

These solar lighting equipment were flown from the town of Tandek into Kampung Sungai Magandai and tirelessly handled by a team of 60 strong BOMBA (42 people) and STORM (18 people) supervised personally by Mr. Nordin Pauzi,

Bored of your fitness routine? Tired of running the

distance but never getting anywhere, with a flatscreen staring blankly at you in mockery? Repetitive and monotonous, it is not uncommon for gym goers to lose interest and momentum in their fitness routine. But why force it if you don’t enjoy it.

Another workout that gets a bad rep is Mixed Martial Arts, MMA. Flashes of dislocated joints, gushing blood and chewed up ears come to mind when someone tell you they do MMA. But there is a difference in training it professionally or for fitness. If you aren’t looking to be a professional, you’ll discover that fitness MMA is a gentle art. So there are no excuses not to drop by. The surrounding area is spacious and open, with the Jungle Skatepark just a walk away.

At the end of the day, it’s about finding what’s right for you.

Don’t give up on fitness if you feel that you’ve hit a plateau or lose the motivation. And don’t force yourself to do something you don’t enjoy. With a character of its own and a sense of self deeply rooted in kadazan culture, it’s a shame that not much is known to visiting travellers of Penampang. But this about to change as gears have been set into motion for Visit Penampang 2018 with the revival of the Penampang Tourism Council.

Just 15 minutes by road from the city centre and Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Penampang has plenty of potential in being a cultural hotspot for domestic and international tourist with many existing cultural attractions within its

area. Due to the lack of attention and promotion, many of these places get little to none exposure to our tourism market, and that is exactly what the Penampang Tourism Council will tackle as they build towards 2018.

“The time has come for Penampang to be proactive in Sabah’s tourism growth” noted District Officer of Penampang YBhg Luvita Koisun, who is also the chairman for the Penampang Tourism Council. The council which has been non active for many years, has since sprinted back into action and with full force working towards more programmes

With the support of the several key players from private sectors and the Penampang Tourism Council in collaboration with BIMP-EAGA Business Council, Tombituon Travel & Tours and Borneo Airworld Sdn Bhd launches the ‘Penampang Culture Tour’ in light of what’s to come in 2018.

The tour kicks off in Donggongon, the main town within the district.

Donggongon is derived from a Kadazan word tundo'ongon which means 'shelter' or 'resting area', referring to its historical role as a stop-over for locals from interior areas who used to journey out to trade goods. This trade is still very much alive today at Tamu Donggongon. The very first stop on the tour!

This long running weekly market held every Thursday and Friday gathers locals from within the district and elsewhere to meet and market their goods. Offering an insight into the lives of locals, the rows of fresh vegetables, rice wines and ready to serve food is a great way to discover the local palate. Which almost always

in the area, even including a tourist night market.

has a side of sour preserves, such as Nonsom Bambagan (pickled wild mango). Similar to Korean Kimchi, Bambagan tantalizes the taste buds and opens up one’s appetite prior to a meal. It’s almost simple and delicious with hot steamy rice. Locally crafted handicraft as also easily found at the tamu, alongside antiques and tradition wear.

Moving on, the next stop is Fook Tet Kung Temple. Built in 1975, it was relocated to Donggongon Town in 1986 and finally opened in 2016. The distinct architecture and vibrant colours of this temple make it among

the easiest landmark to spot in Donggongon just after the Datuk Peter Mojuntin monument.

unity, rights and independence of the Kadazan and dusun of Sabah. He died along with other politicians in the double six plane crash in Kota Kinabalu on June 6, 1976.

Pogunon Community Museum is the next stop and holds with it much mystery. During the construction of a Pogunon Village Kindergarten in 2000, an ancient burial site was found when ancient jars were dug up containing human remains. This opened up an interesting discussion regarding the origins of the Kadazans and possible relations to early Chinese settlers. What were found included ceramics from china dating back between 16th to 19th century along with antique plates. Also

discovered were megaliths used to mark burial sites, sharp end signified men and a rounded end for woman.

Faith and religion plays an importance part in almost all Kadazan families in Penampang, most of which are Christian converts. The oldest church in Penampang is St Michael.

It’s foundation stone were laid out in 1936 but construction was put on hold during world war II, and resumed after the war and completed in 1947. Having had survived the world war II bombings by sheer luck or blessings, it was not a target for fighter jets as the church was still under construction and was missing a roof. Some renovation has been done over the years to maintain the building, but it’s old architecture remains and is a popular church of weddings.

The Kadazans of Sabah has a rich and fascinating culture that is hard to grasp in only a short visit. Cultural centres and theatres offer a wonderful and quick look into local cultures and narratives for those short on time. From Donggongon town, Monsopiad Heritage Village is a 15-minute drive into the country side.

This heritage village is a living museum of the great kadazan warrior, Monsopiad. The house of skulls is a final resting place for 42 head and a testimony of the fierce and feared headhunter Monsopiad once was. The walking tour also includes interactive displays on the simple and creative way of life nearly 200 years ago.

Official Launching on November 12, 2016 The Land Rover which started production in 1948 has played a major role in the reconstruction of Sabah. It has been here for as long as memory serves, in the beginning, after the devastating world war, we were left in tatters and our liberators did the best they could with what little was left.

The crown Colony of North Borneo was established in 1946 after the dissolution of British Military administration and in 1948, the first of its kind arrived with the Engineering Corps of the commonwealth and thus began our long standing association with the Land Rover series and the reconstruction of Borneo.

Over the years it became the people’s car with service to the Police Constabulary, PWD, teaching fraternity, folks who toil the land for a living everybody had in one way or another had an association with the vehicle. Folks from all walks of life own, drive and keep in some cases for generations handing down to their sons and daughters these timeless gem of motoring marvel.

For sixty odd years the Land Rover Series, 110, Defender, Puma or whatever you call it has remained at the forefront of Adventure, Expeditions and Discovery.

It is an honour that on the 12 November 2016, The Sabah Land Rover Club will be officially launched at The Sime Darby Auto Connexion Land Rover Showroom, Kolombong, to instil a sense of belonging and camaraderie among Land Rover Owners.

Headed by club president Datuk Henry Hing, the Sabah Land Rover Club is now an officially registered club and is now inviting members to join our club with following main objectives:

Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman, rode a Land Rover Series I in Stadium Merdeka during the declaration of independence of Malaya in 1957.

October, Vegetatian Awareness Month @ Hard Rock Café

For the second year in a row, Hard Rock is going green with new offerings from its limited-time vegetarian menu, just in time for Vegetarian Awareness Month. The establishment will expand its legendary menu and serve up fresh and satisfying vegetarian-friendly dishes and plant-based beverages. The menu items is set to celebrate the awareness month, designed to spread awareness of vegetarianism and its health benefits.

A major annual art works exhibition involving all the selected and awarded art works by local artist from secondary school students and professional artists. The award winning works featuring masterpieces on varied subjects and topics are all related to Sabah giving them a distinctive ethnic theme. The show is also held as part of the Head of State's Birthday Celebration and will be officially graced by the Head of State.

8-9 OCTOBER Borneo Eco Film Festival

22-23 OCTOBER,

The BEFF, Sabah’s homegrown annual green event returns this October with worksops, talks and films screenings open to the public for free. This year’s festival, now in its sixth year running, will be held on a smaller scale in terms of screening capacity but increases its community reach through a variety of public programmes. Award winning international and local films will be screened at the Event Hall on the 5th floor of the shopping mall, with seating capacity just under 100 pax, making it a more intimate and casual event.

Admission is free, so be sure to come early!

The Tamu Besar is the biggest traditional open-air market held in Sabah. Organised annually in Kota Belud, the Tamu Besar is a plethora of smells,sights and sounds as vendors proudly set up their stalls to sell a variety of goods, ranging from fresh produce to traditional handicraft. The main highlights of this event include a buffalo race, the crowning of the Ratu Sarempak (Sarempak Queen) and a colourful parade of horses and Bajau horsemen, known as the Cowboys of the East. This is one tamu not to be missed.

J Borneo Native Village is the one and only musical theatre performed in the Kadazan language. Currently, they have one play and opens daily except on weekends. Entitled ‘Sininggazanak’, the title is derived from a Kadazan word for a carved monument symbolizing a person who has passes on without any children and heir. The play tells a tale of Jinu and Indai, and the customs that must follow when Indai dies a sudden death without bearing any children.

Sininggazanak is significant to J Borneo as it hopes to educate the younger generation on the

importance of remembering their culture, customs and traditions in the face of modern times. This was a bitter lesson to the villagers of Kg Tombovo, as there used to be a Sininggazanak in the area. One which was located at the junction of two small streams and surrounded by padi fields. It paints a picture of a beautiful scene, however due to negligence and a forgotten custom, the monument is no longer there.

Located just opposite J Borneo is Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, the last stop on the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park tour. Home to some of Borneo’s most park offers the opportunity to see beloved and endangered wildlife, the these creatures within the safe confines of its walking path. Delight in the animal shows at the main stage and educational exhibits for both adults and children.
