→ What is the bodily expression of helplessness and confusion? In this workshop, we will explore this question through a series of movements. For those who want to be prepared: imagine the situation when you are at a party, everyone is invited to clean up, but you don’t know where things go and how to contribute; imagine beeing in a foreign culture but really want to fit in; imagine the first few moments at a new job when you want to participate but don’t know what is going on. Read Kafka and check out Café Muller by Pina Bausch if you want to be well prepared, but no preparation at all might be preferable when confusion is the ultimate goal. This event is open to anyone interested in the possibility of volunteering for Borealis.

A HOUSE AND A MELODY
→ A House and a Melody (2013) is a collection of miniatures which explore the connection between architecture and melody, and between folk music and contemporary music. BIOGRAFI / BIOGRAPHY:
© Paul Griffiths → Alongside regular musical studies in Oslo and Berlin, the Norwegian composer Øyvind Torvund played guitar in rock and improvising groups, and his music assembles disparate materials, inconsistent attitude: sounds from rock or from everyday life (or nature) occurring in chamber music, simplicity in a complex context, improvisation coexisting with exact notation, music combined with film or projections, seriousness in counterpoint with humour. Raw melodic schemes may come from Purcell, the infill from the detritus of electronic distortion or street noise. Categories are split open or blurred, habits unbent. (...) Torvund himself puts it like this: “My chief concern is keeping an open approach as to what may function as the constitutive parts

of a work of music, and trying to combine several kinds and levels of elements.…Contrasts, juxtapositions and completely opposite perspectives interest me because I believe that there is a lot happening around and beneath the ordinary musical framework, and a lot of unconscious forces to be explored.” → Sunniva Rødland Wettre (b. 1977) is a Norwegian harpist, based on Nesodden outside Oslo, who first and foremost focuses on a modern repertoire and contemporary music. As an artist she searches for artistic challenges both for herself and her for her instrument. This has led to exciting performances, both across artistic expression and musical genres. In her repertoire one can find electronic music, stage music, multimediality, experimental music and (post-) modernistic music. In 2008 she was employed at the Norwegian Music Academy (Oslo) on an art stipend, through the Program for Artistic Development. Here she works on a PhD dissertation which among other things explores new approaches to the harp.

ABYSS OF THE BIRDS
→ Abîme des oiseaux (The Abyss of Birds), the third movement of Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, is a test for even the most accomplished of clarinetists. The abyss is Time with its sadness, its weariness. The birds are the opposite to Time; they are our desire for light, for stars, for rainbows, and for jubilant songs. Olivier Messiaen (1908 – 1992) was a French composer, organist and ornithologist. He is regarded as one of the major and most influential composer of the 20th century. The Quatour pour la Fin du Temps (Quartet for the End of Time) was composed during his first year in a prisonerof-war camp in 1940-41. The quartet is composed for the unusual combination of violin, clarinet, cello and piano and was inspired from a text from the tenth chapter of the Book of Revelation: “And I saw another mighty angel come down
from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire ... and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth .... And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, and swore by him that liveth for ever and ever ... that there should be time no longer: But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished ....” BIOGRAFI / BIOGRAPHY:

→ Brianer - An opera in one act: Somewhere in a not-too-distant future all technology is owned by a large multinational known as The Channel on behalf of the World Government. All content produced by citizen-users is subject to appropriation and re-use as targeted advertising via a system of sophisticated algorithms. Brian Ferneyhough, a mildly successful in-house Composer, discovers that a series of counterfeit ads are appearing under his name. Concerned that his reputation lies in the balance, he appeals to The Channel to investigate. Yet as events unfold he finds himself caught in a web of recursive confusion, subjecting him to a kaleidoscopic series of identity crises. Updating opera buffa for the digital media age, Brainer presents a world of playful complexity, in which identities dance in a state of continual flux. Combining spoken word, movement and mime with interactive sound, video and projection, this multimedia adventure represents the group’s most ambitious project to date. BIOGRAFI / BIOGRAPHY:
→ The London-based composer’s collective Brainer has over its five year history chartered a unique form of abstract performance that is equally concerned with sound, gesture, form and meaning. Members Cimeon Ellerton, Luke Fraser and Simon Katan have long shared an interest in abstraction and the absurd along with a perhaps unhealthy preoccupation with permutation, repetition, and repetitive permutation. The group’s work questions audience expectations, playfully and obsessively weaving improbable material into musical compositions. What results are intricately worked-out performances lying somewhere between music, dance and theatre, that manage to be simultaneously captivating, exasperating, and funny. Formed in 2008, Brainer’s appearances to date include Kings Place - London, Soundwaves Festival Brighton, City of London Festival, Sampler Festival - London, and Borealis Festival - where the group continues a three-year residency. Disclaimer: The English composer Brian Ferneyhough (b. 1943) - often referred to as the ‘Father of New Complexity’ - is not to be confused with most of the people of that name in this work.

→ Ludus Gravis is a double bass ensemble devoted to the performance of contemporary music. → Hans Werner Henze (1926-2012) was undoubtedly one of the most important European composers of the postwar era. From his neo classical beginnings, his music progressed through the rigours of Darmstadt, an angular, highly politicized phase inspired by his disgust of Nazi Germany where he spent his formative years, and his adoption of a communist ideal. His language arrived eventually at a sensuous lyricism, reminiscent, perhaps, of the relaxed environment of Italy, which was his home since 1953. post World War II. Originally for 6 cellos, the present piece is an authorised transcription for 6 double basses by M° Daniele Roccato. As is often the case with Henze, his compositions reflect the drama in his life through a chain of dissonances that follow one another in a tangle of increasing complexity. Born in Mexico City, the child of Spanish refugees, Julio Estrada (b. 1943) is a product of cultural crossroads. Influenced in equal part by Xenakis’s compositional methods, Mexican music history, and by his studies of mathematics and acoustics, Estrada has been one of the leading proponents and ambassadors of Mexico’s thriving experimental music scene. Bajo el Volcán, (2012) was the outcome of a one-week residence with the members of Ensemble Ludus Gravis, who provided Estrada with unprecedented stimuli as to the improvisational approaches to the double bass. Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988) began to compose his better known pieces in the 1940s, works which involved static harmony with surface fluctuations of timbre and microtonal inflection. This type of harmonic minimalism was developed independently of other minimalist trends of the twentieth century, and was received with fascination by the musical world when his music finally began to receive performances and recordings in the 1980s. In the 40s he also became fascinated by the complex of sounds which could be produced by a single note, and reportedly played single pitches repeatedly on the piano, listening intently. These influences began to be felt in his works from the 1950s, with many pieces consisting of very slowly shifting harmony, often moving in one direction, for example in Wo Ma, where the bass voice is presented nakedly and in its full tonal strangeness as the player goes after the sound over and over to achieve a mantra drone. Stefano Scodanibbio (1956-2012) was a master interpreter of the contemporary double bass repertoir. Not only was he a virtuoso of the double bass: he was also a teacher, organizer and most of all, a composer. Over the years, Scodanibbio developed and refined several new techniques for the instrument, which he put to use in the creation of a sophisticated, and often agitated, interplay between timbre, texture and pitch. Ottetto represents Scodanibbio’s final, visionary voyage to the heart of the double bass.

→ Eschatology, a major new soundwork for Borealis, explores endings - the end of land where we take to ships, the end of radio contact where white noise fills the receiver; the end of individual sounds as they echo and decay in diverse Bergen locations, from the Hurtigrute boat horn bouncing off the mountains, to the ten second echo in a cave under the mountain. Poet, songwriter, cartoonist and Oulipean Peter Blegvad weaves a tale of Ballard-ian end-times: “A liner at sea, heading for a port which no longer exists. Gradual realization among passengers that they’ve escaped a general devastation, but they might be the last human beings on earth.” The text - in Norwegian and English - written and performed live by Peter Blegvad - also explores historical doctrines of The End, from the physician Hermann von Helmholtz in 1854, to Ragnarök in Norse mythology. New home-made electronic instruments and vintage tape machines develop sonorities derived from field recordings. The performance is accompanied
by meditative high definition video of shipping off the East coast of England in the North Sea. This is a contemplative work that encourages us to consider how it would feel to witness the end of the world. ARTISTER / PERFORMERS:

→ *AR is the duo of Richard Skelton and Autumn Richardson. Their collaborative debut, Wolf Notes, was released on their own Corbel Stone Press in 2011, followed by a vinyl reissue by Type Records later that year. At this year’s Borealis-Utmark collaboration, Richard and Autumn will be premiering new music from their forthcoming album, recorded in the late winter of 2012/13 after spending a year living in the Cumbrian fells of northern England. As with Wolf Notes, it is music of the landscape - achieved through a deep, sustained engagement with a specific environment, its topography, weather, flora and fauna. Accordingly, this new work charts a drift away from the pentatonic musical structures of their previous work into a new, more tonally complex terrain, with an increased occurrence of dissonance, breath and silence. In addition to their musical work, Richard and Autumn also produce books, pamphlets and visual pieces exploring the poetics of place, ecology, folklore and animism. Their particular interest is species loss, ecological succession, and its counterpart in language evolution - the erosion and disappearance of a living vocabulary of the natural landscape. Their performance in Bergen will therefore be accompanied by a new film work, and a series of texts presenting relics of the now little-spoken “Cumberland” dialect, exploring its roots in the Scandinavian, Anglo-Saxon and Celtic languages.

© Ilaria Lanzarini → A rockstar and avant-garde musician of classical origins. -Vinko Globokar → The french composer Vinko Globokar (b. 1934) is one among few living members of the modern avant-garde, which included composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Klagel, György Ligeti and Lucioano Berio. Even though Globokar is close to 80 years old, he is still productive and BIT20 has invited him to compose a new work for the ensemble, which will be premiered at the Borealis festival. His music is often characterized as spontaneous and creative and he frequently uses unorthodox composition techniques and instruments. “I was part of a group of friends, an avant-garde that was based on risk. The idea, collectively, was to find something new. But even if you didn’t find this end result, it was still okay, because you were exploring ideas. That kind of collective thinking we did has disappeared.“ -Vinko Globokar EIGHT SONGS FOR A MAD KING 1. THE SENTRY (KING PRUSSIA’S MINUET) 2. THE COUNTRY WALK (LA PROMENADE) 3. → Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ (b. 1934) 8 Songs for a Mad King is based on the historical figure of King George III. The text, by Randolph Stow, is also based on authentic sources and words of the majesty himself. Mad kings have fascinated artists for centuries, from Shakespeare’s King Lear to Ture
Rangström’s From King Erik’s Songs with text by Fröding. In Maxwell Davies’ work, a modern classic, we meet (in Paul Griffith’s words) an “extravagant, disturbing and poignant portrayal of madness”. The songs are based on songs from a mechanical organ the king himself owned and used to train birds to sing. The music is virtuosic both for instrumentalists and note the least for the singer, who needs to master both “Sprechgesang”, chords (!) and a range of more than four octaves. → One of the foremost composers of our time, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies has made a significant contribution to musical history through his wide-ranging and prolific output. He lives in the Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland, where he writes most of his music. In a worklist that spans more than five decades, he has written across a broad range of styles, yet his music always communicates directly and powerfully, whether in his profoundly argued symphonic works, his musictheatre or witty light orchestral works.

→ Unter Strom was composed in 1969 and can be seen as a composition for live electronics, comparable to what would later be Acustica (1970). Three performers each have a number of ‘electric’ instruments on their table – from coffee grinder to electric bass guitar, from siren to amplified table tennis balls – with which they perform a polyphonic narrative that is constructed on each individual role. The whole builds up to a finale that has the trio play together on a giant, 6m long, amplified harp. TACTIL

Intercontemporain. He is especially known for his innovative programs and interpretations of contemporary music. The baritone Leigh Melrose has carved out a formidable reputation for the performance of new works. A graduate of St John’s College, Cambridge, and the Royal Academy of Music, Melroses’s opera engagements have taken him to companies all over the world. His opera repertoire spans from classics such as Carmen (Escamilo), Il barbiere di Siviglia (Figaro), Eugen Onegin (Onegin) to contemporary works such as Elliot Carter’s On conversing with Paradise which was recorded and subsequently nominated for a Gramophone Award. sis for et spill av faseskift som spiller på publikums oppmerksomhetsvidde. → Tactil for pianist and two guitarists – uses rhythmic patterns characteristic of certain types of popular music (alienated to the point that they become hard to recognise) as a basis for a game of phase-shifting that plays with the audience’s attention span. A critique on the typical virtuoso, melodic piano playing as seen on the mainstream concert stage, Tactil not only limits itself to accompaniment materials but integrates abstracted performance movements taken from old piano manuals, to create a highly theatrical piece that ends with guitarists playing from elevated stage positions to remote-control the piano via connecting strings. → In 1969 and 1970, the Argentinean-German composer Mauricio Kagel wrote Unter Strom and Tactil for three musicians. The historical performers – Kagel himself, Wilhelm Bruck, Theodor Ross and Christoph Caskel – have
been the only ones to play and record these masterpieces. Since there are no published scores, and neither the historical audio nor video recordings provide adequate information for bringing these experimental works to the stage again, audiences have been deprived of performances of both pieces. Pianist and Kagel-specialist Luk Vaes has embarked upon this venture in order to complete and publish the scores as well as document the research. Supported by the Siemens Foundation, the Orpheus Institute, Edition Peters and Mode Records, the reconstruction has been carried out on the basis of deep and extensive source research as well as a production process that is set-up and supervised by all of the original performers. → The Argentinean-German composer Mauricio Kagel was born in Buenos Aires in 1931.

→ This program presents composers’ reflections and commentaries on the end of
life, in music written in the 19th, 20th and present century. Scriabin, Radulescu and Ives meditate on the philosophical and spiritual aspects of the end of our existence: Ives’ The Celestial Railroad is a commentary on the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne’s (1804 – 1864) work of the same name, which describes two pilgrims who board a train that takes them even beyond the River Styx, while both Scriabin’s and Radulescu’s music deals with the dematerialization of physical matter into subatomic particles, not only literally but also spiritually. While Liszt’s and Aperghis’ works both derive their titles from the physical trappings of funeral rites, they approach the subject entirely differently. The program is completed by one of Scelsi’s final, and appropriately named, pieces, Un adieu. BIOGRAFI / BIOGRAPHY:

→ Sing to me of Heaven is a church concert with music by composers who deal very personally with spiritual topics and traditions. orealis har sitt navn etter Boreas, nordavinden, en hissig, lunefull og energisk guddom som også bar tilnavnet «den som Hvem er denne Boreas? 400 skip. Dette skriver Herodot. Den som bringer Hva er en representant? → Borealis is named after Boreas, the Greek god of the northern wind, known for his bad temper and formidable strength which gave him the epithet «The Devouring One». The story goes like this, according to Herodotus: Greece was at war, waiting in terror for the Persians’ fatal, 400-ship fleet on its way to Athens. Boreas then intercepted by bringing a terrific storm on the fleet, whereby it sank. Those who bring death go to their deaths, while those who fear it get a moment’s deferment. Here: drowned, fractured corpses. There: relieved citizens going on with their lives. Boreas accomplishes the annihilation that they couldn’t do by themselves. Who is this Boreas? He is a substitute, a standin, a helping hand appearing on behalf of his friends in the struggle, giving life to one side, death to the other. A representative. Here: immortal god, unlimited power. There: mortal people struggling for their lives. What is the representative? Representation means that one thing appears in stead of another, like a sign or a symbol. Those who can send a representative into the battle won’t risk their own lives. The pen is mightier than the sword, they say. Words cannot die, and the books and papers live on long after the body that uttered the words has become bones and dust. The singing voice is silenced, but we have the music represented in so many scores. Thanks to Herodotus’ writings we know about the Athenians, the Persians, and Herodotus himself – it is almost as if they are still among us. But Boreas, the wind, is blowing in our hair today as he did yesterday, and as he will continue to do long after we are gone.

felix kubin
→ After its introduction to the public 40 years ago, the Compact Cassette (aka audio cassette or cassette tape) quickly became the most popular medium for copying music, allowing consumers to record directly from radio or record player to tape. Soon the record industry started to worry about a decline in record sales, which led to the notorious Home Taping Is Killing Music campaign. As a side effect, the medium has produced an independent and distinctive underground music scene in the early 1980s. Since the introduction of recordable CDs and mp3s, the importance of the Compact Cassette has decreased continuously. In the beginning of 2012, its industrial production was put to an end in the Western World. In his lecture, Kubin will cast a light on the history of the German underground tape scene and the Compact Cassette in this context. Having been a so-called “Kassettentäter” (tape delinquent) himself, he will present several musical examples of that time, including some obscurities of a unique children-band-scene in his home town which he was part of. He will then perform a new composition, composed specially for Borealis, which investigates the characteristics of magnetic recordings, their saturations, fluctuations, strains and crosstalk effects. These shortcomings – which are swept away completely from today’s digital data transmission – are similar to the specter of human memory: They interpret the recording rather than representing it, thus serving as a metaphor of perception. Memory

storage, memory gaps, memory decay and memory loss are mirrored in this composition about the rise and decay of the Compact Cassette, about media history and media-art history. Most of the sound material in this composition is gathered from Kubin’s own jam-packed archives. BIOGRAFI / BIOGRAPHY:
→ Born in Hamburg in 1969, the multi-instrumentalist Felix Kubin found his musical focus when he got his hands on a Korg synthesizer in the early 1980s. Since then he has become a prolific composer, producer and performer, working across the fields of theatre, animation, film, radio art and DJS
electronic music, much of it containing his dark humour and manic-retro perspective on the surreal mindstates that developed behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. Releasing most of his work through his own Gagarin label, Kubin names his influences as everyone from Stockhausen and Ligeti to the Industrial music of DAF, Cabaret Voltaire and Kraftwerk.
→ Following a warm-up set from Fredrik Saroea, Mr. Kubin will show the inventiveness, humor, audaciousness and charming pop appeal of the German early 1980’s underground tape scene, anticipating some tracks of an upcoming compilation which he curated for the British label “Finders Keepers”. The night will end with early 80s Miami Bass dubversions and Southern electro from Dave Tompkins.
→ The movement that called itself avant garde, those who thought that our own times differ radically from past times, they also wanted to fill the gap between life and art. Art should not only be an aesthetics, it was also politics, erotics and drugs: a way of life. On the one hand art should serve life, create novelty and eternal youth, let itself be intoxicated by that which has not yet occurred. On the other hand life should become art. The artist was not just a citizen or worker producing a certain kind of artefacts, he was a revolutionary, a heroic figure standing on the barricades, fighting in the vanguard. The avant garde always wanted to start from the beginning or create a new beginning, in a perhaps futile attempt to catch the fleeting moment of the present, to articulate that which is about to happen, in an incessant march towards the future. But in the same movement it tramples on its own achievements. How long did it take Picasso to exhaust the potential of cubism? A few years. And so one moves on. What is present is ruthlessly pushed into the past. Every new movement rejected its predecessors, and through this array of rejections art reached a kind of eternal life. The perpetual impatience of the avant garde finds its reverse image in that no form ever gets to live, that everything it touches upon sooner or later ends up in the junk yard. The avant garde advocates life, but brings death, in the same way that it brings the promise of its own death. Innumerable are the poets that have taken their own lives.

→ In the composer’s own words: “This work is dedicated to harmony and to groups of wind instruments. The music is simple, easy to play and based, among other things, on citations of dance rhythms (paso doble, tango, bolero and waltz). One can even find references to Giuseppe Verdi’s La Donna è Mobile and to a funeral march. The musicians are asked to move in space in order to form various geometric figures. → The Band of the armed forces has its origins in the bands of the Turkish janissary. “Janissary” means “new soldier” and were infantry troops that from c. 1300 - 1826 made up the core of the Turkish army. One of the tasks for the janissary bands were to play on the battlefield both to rouse the soldiers, and to play as powerful and frightening that the enemy in might flee in panic. In the history of music I found two promising links to Turkey. The first of which is the L’Homme Armé (The Armed Man), a secular French song from the turn of the 13th and 14th century. It is very simple and was therefore suitable for musical development. It functions as my musical starting point, and thus also used as the title of this commission from the NNBB. The second aspect is Lully’s Marche pour la Cérémonie des Turcs which the French Louis

COLIN STETSON
→ You have probably heard Stetson as the saxophonist behind Bon Iver, Arcade Fire and Tom Waits. As a soloist, he takes the horn on new and unknown adventures where you will look in vain for the loop box before you realize that he is making all the sounds himself. With circular breathing, enormous lungs and a self-developed instrumental technique he performs music that spans the raw to the hypnotic. BIOGRAFI / BIOGRAPHY:

→ Colin Stetson was born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI, where he became proficient on assorted saxophones, clarinet, and flute. He earned a degree in music from his hometown school the University of Michigan in 1997. While still in college, he co-founded Transmission (which later became Transmission Trio), and in 1998 they relocated to San Francisco and released their first of three records in 1999. Stetson also branched out to play live with the likes of Fred Frith, Peter Kowald, Ned Rothenberg, and Kenny Wollesen, and kept up his Detroit/Ann Arbor connections as well. Before moving west, he had played on his friend RECLOOSE’s debut EP for Planet E, and their collaborations continued over the years, culminating in the DJ’s acclaimed full-length Cardiology in 2002. Also that year, TOM WAITS tapped Stetson for reed work on his ALICE and BLOOD MONEY albums. His most recent appearances with Waits have been on the soundtrack to the animated feature Shrek 2 and Waits’ boxed set, ORPHANS. His full-length debut as a leader came in the summer of 2003 with the quintet recording Slow Descent. Since relocating to NYC in 2004, Stetson has performed regularly with the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Jeremiah Lockwood’s SWAY MACHINERY, and the ever present Transmission as well as performances with Sinead O’Connor, Burning Spear and Medeski, Martin, and Wood, ANTHONY BRAXTON and TV ON THE RADIO. He is currently touring with the band, ARCADE FIRE, playing clarinet, bass clarinet, french horn, cornet and bass.

→ Thomas Edison did not have music on his mind when he invented the phonograph, the precursor to the turntable; he wanted to preserve the voices of the dead. By using technology, he tried, as so many others in the 19th and 20th century, to overcome entropy, prolong the inevitable journey towards dissolution, age and death. And what is more personal, more connected to the individual life, his breath and language, than the voice? The technology must reproduce life as faithfully as possible, but by the same token it needs to be as invisible and silent as possible, with no noise or sound of its own. This leads – paradoxically – to a rather short lifespan for the reproduction technology; what is at one time a faithful rendition soon becomes noisy, clunky and physical. It becomes an object rather than a medium. This year’s two exhibitions at Borealis exhibit this once-transparent technology. Stephen Cornford’s used cassette players are no longer capable of playback, but live on by means of the mechanical sounds they make, as instruments in an orchestra. Espen Sommer Eide explores the lives of languages; how they live, die, and are resurrected through technical devices. Medium becomes object, and then exhibited; thus returning to temporality. → The Borealis 2013 Notations project was inspired by Theresa Sauer’s 2008 Notations 21 book - a wonderful collection of seminal classic and newly created graphic scores. Inspired by John Cage’s 1969 Notations publication, Notations 21 ex-
plores extended musical notation, ranging from new approaches to conventional stave notation, to scores that make use of text instructions, colour, photography, collage and other means of visual expression. With this in mind, Borealis has initiated its 2013 Notations project, bringing together people from diverse disciplines to collaborate on creating and performing new musical scores, which will be performed and exhibited throughout the festival. Together they will explore, with the festival theme THE END in mind, what the possibilities for musical notation are in relation to expressing imagined sounds, specifying performative actions, exploring acoustic space and in expanding the relationship between composer, performer and audience

I SAMARBEID MED NY MUSIKK // 7. 8. 9. MARS
→ Ny Musikk Bergen has invited four remarkable improvising musicians to interpret the same artwork/score by the Italian Bergen-based artist Andrea Spreafico in their own way - an artwork inspired by the Borealis theme The End. NMB are challenging both the artist and the musicians: what shapes can graphical notation possibly take, how
will improvising musicians intuitively interpret an unconventional score? Improvising musicians often deal with the same issue: How can you continually surprise or challenge yourself? In this experiment, the musicians are presented with an artwork they will have to musically interpret, with hardly any time to prepare. Will this drive them into unknown territory, or make them hold on to their darlings even more? What spontaneous sonic output will come from the visual input? Andrea Spreafico (f. 1976) har en doktorgrad i filosofi fra Universitetet i Bologna (2006) og et diplom fra Academy of Fine Arts i Nuremberg i Art and Public Space (2008). Just as occult and magical thought was once a widespread familiar feature of Western medieval societies, so today, particularly since the 1960s, we are witnessing the increasing ordinariness of occulture. frequently. The Parkinson disease caused him to lose the ability to speak, but he always wanted to go outside. This he signaled by rocking his body back and forth as to say, “I want out, I want out!” - Irene Nygårdsvik, Spekulatoriet AS In 2011, Thorolf Thuestad and Roar Sletteland interviewed residents at homes for the elderly in Bergen. They talked about sounds from nature and other sounds remembered from their childhood. Thuestad and Sletteland then went into the countryside with members of Bergen Turlag over 70s members and recorded some of the sounds recollected, along with other sounds from nature. This, along with the interviews, formed the source material for Fortapt i naturen. This project was a collaboration between Borealis, Bergen Turlag and Spekulatoriet.

A century ago, the Rite of Spring caused a scandal. Within 30 years, it was accompanying animated dinosaurs plodding to their extinction in Disney’s Fantasia. Music now seems to be absorbed into culture (as Feldman used the term) at an alarming rate. What’s not absorbed is effectively ignored, tolerated as long as it’s done in private – or at least among its friends. Like an embarrassing uncle, it’s rarely allowed in public unless it’s on its best behaviour. Of course this is oversimplified, but it does reflect the binary logic felt by many composers (at least in the UK) to be imposed on them. New music is either given a deaf ear or left to its madness in the attic. In our new age of austerity, this perspective also questions the legitimacy of public subsidy. Arts that don’t serve the public can’t be afforded; and arts that entertain a large audience should be able to pay their own way. We seem to be stuck between an injunction to reassure audiences and a compulsion to rebel and challenge them. Perhaps another way to frame music’s relationship to audiences is through an economy of pleasure. What might this tell us about ‘the public’, and of music’s role in a time of social and political upheaval?

Dave Tompkins’ first book, How To Wreck A Nice Beach: The Vocoder From World War II To Hip-Hop, is now out in paperback. It was named Amazon’s Entertainment Book of the year in 2010 and was chosen by the Village Voice as one of the Top Ten books of the year. Los Angeles Times called it “one of the best music books ever written.” A guy from Kentucky said it was “a mega-pill of mule-choking insights.” Tompkins has presented in Poland (Unsound Festival), Switzerland (Shift Festival), the Netherlands (Jan Van Eyck), London (Goldsmith’s), and Germany (Salon des Auteurs). In 2012, he lectured at the National Security Agency’s Cryptology Symposium, held at the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. Tompkins’ first published story profiled graffiti icon Rammellzee for Urb in 1993. He has contributed to Paris Review, Slate, Grantland, Atlantic Monthly, Oxford American, The Village Voice, Wax Poetics, and The Wire, where he wrote a hip-hop column for eight years. His essay Keep Me in the Loop, You Dead Mechanism was anthologized in The Twilight Worlds of Nigel Kneale, a collection of essays inspired by the British science fiction icon. Tompkins’ next book will be a natural history of bass sub-frequencies in Miami. Born in North Carolina, he currently lives in Brooklyn.

Talk SYNOPSIS, with slides and audio clips: The Beat Who Cheated Death is a cultural, geological, and political history of Miami, propagating from Miami Bass hip-hop while using the speaker cabinet as a form of environmental architecture. Bass—or its technical alias Sustained Decay--would be redefined as Boom in the Reagan Era. The Boom evolved into a way of life, with modifications as extreme as the city of Miami itself. This is a sub-history of Miami’s foundation and development: from the ocean bottom to man-made beaches, from failures of city planning to real estate scams, from riots and roller rinks to cocaine, coral reefs and a U-Boat attack in 1942. The Beat Who Cheated Death takes Miami for all its worth, from boom to bust, in all its iterations, challenging assumptions of decay and the geospatial contradictions of a landscape shaped by Bass. This is a biomorphic distortion of terms and technology, all for the love below.

→ When we travel, we move away from one thing as we move towards another. Like any journey we undertake, musical experiences are about absence, loss, what is left behind, as much as they are about the vitality and excitement of now. Sound depends on silence for its existence; musical history is the story of decisions made, turns taken and things left behind. Specially for Festpillene i Bergen, Borealis and Ekko festivals curate the concert series Mellom Lyden (Between sound), which presents artists who in one way or another explore the minimal elements of music – both the audible and the inaudible. Helge Sten, aka Deathprod, performs material from his debut album Treetop Drive together with Hans Magnus “Snah” Ryan (Motorspycho), violin, and the video artist Pekka Stokke. → Binatone Galaxy is an installation for multiple used cassette players which looks on their obsolescence as an opportunity to reconsider their functional potential. Superseded as playback devices, they become instruments in their own right. Replacing the prerecorded content of each tape with a microphone gives us the chance to listen instead to the rhythmic and resonant properties of these once ubiquitous plastic shells. Binatone Galaxy brings the framework within which a generation purchased their favourite records to the centre of attention, revealing the acoustics of the cassette and the voices of the machines themselves.

Reconfiguring these media from the inside, re-imagining their functionality, defying their obsolescence and searching for their intrinsic poetry are for him strategies with which to challenge normative use, social conformity and the myth of technological progress. The work inhabits both gallery and gig, taking the forms of kinetic installation and process-based performance by turns, always searching for situations in which the material; whether solid, spatial or sonic; controls the outcome as much as myself. Her gis materialet ”nytt liv” som direk-

→ Every tenth day a language disappears, and at that rate, within a few generations, half of the approximately 6000 languages in the world today will be extinct. That a language can die is a complex subject. Is a forgotten language the same as a dead one? Can language be kept and conserved for future generations, or is a language alive only when actively used and spoken between people in a society? What we lose when a language dies is a broad topic which is interesting from both a cultural historical, linguistic and philosophical point of view. With a background in art, music and philosophy, Espen Sommer Eide has used numerous approaches to observe the phenomenon. He is interested in the complexity in the process behind destruction, evolution and creation of language. The archiving of language can function both as a destructive and creative process. in the exhibition orbits around how linguistic structures are stored in a collective conscience, and how the voice in some instances can revoke the destructive powers of time and memory. The sacred Indian Veda texts have been passed through generations since approximately 1800 BC. Despite that the texts were passed on orally, the contents has been conserved verbatim due to the special way the texts are recited in complex paralinguistic patterns. In the exhibition this subject is also treated from a pure aesthetic perspective. Is it possible to find a unique signature of sound in different languages, and can such an aesthetic aspect be detached from the aspects of knowledge and identity? What is the sound of dead languages, and can it be revived? When Edison invented the phonograph, it was soon seen as a means, not primarily to play music, but to hear voices of dead persons. The voices recorded on the phonograph were experienced as sounds without bodies; as spirits in space. Through deconstructions of language Sommer Eide touches questions about the lines between living and dead languages, between meaning and sound, and between linguistic metaphorical structures and musically structured sound. In the exhibition he shows among other things his self-produced musical instruments, historical archive material new sound- and video-works. In addition to the exhibition, the project consists of a series of performances centred around self-made musical instruments (‘philosophical instruments’). Here the material is given ‘new life’ as direct interaction between the artist himself and other specially invited artists. Dead Language Poetry is Espen Sommer Eide’s first solo exhibition. The exhibition is curated and produced by Bergen Kunsthall, and is part of an annual cooperation between Borealis and Bergen Kunsthall. New York Dance and Performance Awards a.k.a. The Bessies 2005-2006 i kategorien for installasjoner og nye medier.
This is a room designed to completely absorb reflections of sound, insulated from exterior sources of noise. Anechoic chambers are used for research and measurements in acoustics, psychoacoustics and relating to hearing impairment. Entering an anechoic chamber is a sensory depriving experience. While the architectural and physical appearance of the space is experienced as overwhelming and claustrophobic, the sonic appearance is that of a quiet open-space of infinite dimension. In the “Lontano” installation surround sound is used to create shifting illusions of sonic landscapes and places. The installation is a play of perceptual sonic illusions, moving freely between the oppressing silence of the anechoic chamber, outdoor soundscapes and illusions of being located in various indoor spaces. The installation raises questions about how our hearing works and how we perceive the environment and locate ourselves in the world through sound. alter Benjamin beskriver et bilde av Paul Klee, den tyske maleren.

The End skildrer seks karakteres siste dager i livet. → Requiem For Detroit is a documentary that shows how America’s fourth largest city were damaged when the Capitalist Motor Industry decided to leave town. The case of Detroit exemplifies how a place can be impacted upon by modes of production. The Fordist mode of production built the city on the back of the motor industry and then with the decline of the this industry the area suffered massively. This highlights how a city based on one capitalist industry driven by economics and growth can often be short sighted.

→ After a tragic car crash the wives of two twins dies. → Michael Hanekes portrayal of the apocalypse has little in common with the catastrophy films coming out of Hollywood. Arguably his most underrated film, Time of the Wolf is set in a deserted french landscape, where we follow a family searching for food and housing. There is another painting, by Ford Madox Brown: The Last of England. It portrays a couple on a boat, embarking on a journey to a foreign land. We recognise the painter himself and his wife: we look at his eyes, and they stare back. Unlike Klee’s angel, this person’s eyes are turned toward the future, where he is going. blinking or movements, only smoke emanating and night falling. The end of an era. Manhattan, for many years the immigrants’ first meeting with the new world, was suddenly the scene of grief and loss. This fateful day USA lost its innocence, people said. The new world was no longer new. What was once a safe haven, the goal for many refugees, came under attack, without a new safe place emerging. During the following years the borders of the western world would become ever more tightly closed for people on the run, and the controls ever more strict. All this is history. In Basinskis film both these events are recorded in one and the same gesture: the death of the tapes and of USA – the insignificant and private work inscribed in the world disaster. The eyewitness is small, his power dependent on what he saw; always in the singular. The distance from Jarmans office by the Thames to Basinskis studio may seem huge, they still touch each other. Not so far to BBC’s studios in Maida Vale, the premises of the famous Radiophonic Workshop. This organisation would survive Jarman by just a few years, shut down after budget cuts in the BBC, but during its 40 year lifespan it produced a vast amount of music, radio plays, sound effects and ambience for radio and tv. William Basinski stored music on tape; the Workshop created music with tape. Today they both have the same problem: the technology is dying. One is dissolving, the other is being replaced by more efficient and modern technology. What once belonged to the future is now on the scrap heap of history. The workshop’s most noted product is Delia Derbyshire’s theme from the science fiction series Doctor Who, a show that has been resurrected along with an online version of the workshop itself. The dead technology is thus given a ghostly existence through the media that killed it. Langham Research Centre was established to rescue its spirit from the new technology. Rather than repeating the workshop’s accomplishments, the group wanted to retain the spirit, capture the ghost, so to speak, with authentic versions of tape pieces by Cage and his likes. In their white shirts the members summon the old image of a 1950s scientist or engineer, when these characters still represented modernity. A double sign, then: a representation of a representation of modernity as old fashioned. The group thus represents modernity through its absence, or rather its decay, not unlike the BBC itself, which no longer performs the public service it set out to do, but competes with other cultural or commercial expressions in the same market. Oh, the sadness. Here they are in the flesh, these old or not-soold men, exploring endings, the coastline where the land ends, the end of Radio, the point where static fills the receiver and no signal is understood. We see their physical presence at Landmark, and we see the North Sea in its absence, represented on a flat surface in a film showing the departure from the coastline of England.

Ting tar slutt. Men likevel aldri helt. → Things end. But never completely. Among the remains could be whale skeletons, leftovers after moving house, memories of a person. In this year’s Biblioludium, three authors living in Bergen read newly published texts that in different ways embody the festival theme. The voice of three poets each meets a musician from the festival programme. Poet and playwright Cecilie Løveid (b. 1951) has recently returned to her childhood Bergen from Copenhagen, where she has lived for more than ten years. This experience became the poetry collection Flytterester, released this fall by her publisher Kolon. Siw-Anita Kirketeig (b. 1988) made her debut last November with the collection Alt kjød er grønt gras, published at Samlaget. Kirketeig comes from Dale in Sunnfjord and is a student at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design. Lars Haga Raavand’s first poetry collection Hvalfall was released by Aschehoug in 2012. Raavand (b. 1988) has lived in Trøndelag, Kråkerøy and France. He now lives and works in Bergen.

The rituals of the concert, the gig, and the stadium show seem to believe in the music on our behalf: we can go through the motions as if we believe in this music as a sign of the future, as long as the ritual guarantees its consistency. While the record keeps turning, the music hasn’t stopped. The question for composers, musicians, and for anyone concerned with how music can find ways of reaching audiences is this: how can we create rituals that allow us to repeat ourselves in a different register. Rather than striving for originality as such, can we create processes that defamiliarise the performance rituals

THE END AV ALAIN RÉMY AYERS
FIN
A thought-field score for those who can hear and see to getting on with going to stuff before it’s too late! The end of the world, time, poverty, faith, history, line, suburbia, things, being, street.

This is the end - seems like a good way to begin writing about endings. There is no beginning, no middle, just the end of history and living in the end times, ecology, bio-genetics, global apartheid, manipulated markets careering towards zero level catastrophe. Ideology, neoliberal nationalism and unnatural darkness in the rapid town of Techno-lunar.

Of our elaborate plans, drones silently implode in the night, out of sight, body, house, crops, vehicle, lives, danger, hope, effortlessly imagining an out of mind. Endlessly, we take a face from the ancient gallery, an oedipal fright THING! of alien concepts into making the end an arrival. Oh yes, my beautiful friend, the love we make is equal to every little death.

The Revolutionary New
THE PASSION. THE PIANOS.
THE REVOLUTION.
