The cover of our current edition is dedicated to Ciudad Juarez and nothing better than focusing on an emblematic space so well known by the Juarez community: the INBA museum, a place that houses the best of contemporary art since 1963.

I

n the last issue, don Juan de Oñate had accepted his friend Viceroy Luis de Velasco’s request to engage in a self-funded expedition and colonization of Nuevo Mexico in 1595. He accepted but due to a change in Viceroys and due to plans of sabotage by others, don Juan De Oñate’s expedition was delayed for almost three years at Las Minas de Casco, which is in Durango.

In 1596, don Lope de Ulloa was named Lieutenant Captain General and was entrusted by Count of Monterrey, Viceroy of New Spain, don Gaspar de Zuniga y Acevedo, to hold two inspections and reviews of the people and goods that were being taken on the expedition as stated in the original contract, one at Las Minas de los Casco and the other at Arroyo de San Geronimo.

Don Juan de Oñate was ordered to delay the expedition by the Count of Monterrey de Zuniga y Acevedo due to the inspection and inventory of all items that were to be taken on the expedition. Oñate protested the delay because he began suffering losses of livestock, perishables and people. Oñate was ready to make a claim on the crown for the damages of all that was lost, however, he was willing to comply with the request to delay and to wait for the King’s order to proceed. He realized that he could not keep his friends committed to the expedition if someone else would be selected to take his place.

Horses and mules had been lost to theft. He requested that the whole group be moved to t h e Va l le d e S a n B a r t o lo m e , closer to Villa de Santa Barbola, now known as Santa Barbara, which he felt was more ample and safer. It

would also help his group feel that there was progress by virtue of movement northward.

With winter fast approaching, his re q u e s t w a s g r a n t e d a n d o n November 19, 1597, they moved to Villa de Santa Barbola and traveled to the Estancia de Fuensalida. On December 20, 1597 the expedition left Fuensalida and traveled to the Arroyo de San Geronimo in the Valle de San Bartolomé, where the second inspection was held.

All items were once again inventoried.

This painstaking chore would delay the expedition even more. The inventory logged 539 men, women and children, 120 soldiers, 7000 head of livestock and enough medicine, flour, beans, jerked beef, i r o n p r o d u c t s , a r t i l l e r y, farming supplies, seeds, and paper, sackcloth and articles of trade. The nine Franciscans, mentioned in the previous volume, had abandoned the expedition prior to this inventory.

Oñate feared his army and friends would disband. He was interested in showing them his zeal, loyalty and service to God and the King.

or Ricardo Medina Mata, the basic concept of life is to enjoy. At 39 years old, he is a ce r t i f ied dive r, an ac t i vi t y h e learned in Cozumel, where he lived with his sister. For this sport it is necessary to know how to breathe with the oxygen tank, prevent accidents and, above all, follow the rules: “Every time I dive I thoroughly check all my equipment, besides checking that the air is circulating.”

Seven marathons and an ultra marathon in cities like Mexico, Torreon, El Paso, Juarez, Ruidoso, Mazatlan and Paris are part of his achievements. What follows for Ricardo is to go to the Berlin marathon.

Ricardo would like to specialize in this sport a lot more, doing night dives for example, although he has different experiences: “I have done 40 dives in total and have exceeded ten meters in depth, I have been in open cenotes, lagoons and caves that have no roof.”

Although he does not recognize himself as a role model, it is very satisfying for him to support other people, share experiences on ways to have a healthy life, as well as to give hope to those who need it: “My diagnosis was to be in a wheelchair for my entire life, but it was reversed. At a given moment, I had de opportunity to dive, run, and I am going to keep doing it and enjoying it.”

What he enjoys the most are the beautiful seascapes where nature emerges in its greater splendor.

He recommends beginners to look for recognized companies to get certified and try to do it in the sea, not in a pool.

Ricardo le gustaría especializarse más, haciendo buceos nocturnos, por ejemplo, aunque tiene diversas experiencias: “Llevo 40 buceos en total y he sobrepasado los diez metros de profundidad, he estado en cenotes abiertos, lagunas y cuevas que no tienen techo”.

Aunque no se reconoce como un ejemplo, para él es muy satisfactorio apoyar a otras personas, compartir experiencias sobre las formas de llevar una vida saludable, así como dar esperanza a quien lo necesita: “Mi diagnóstico era estar en silla de ruedas para toda la vida, pero se revirtió; en un momento dado, tuve la oportunidad de bucear, de correr, y lo voy a seguir haciendo y disfrutando”.

Lo que más disfruta son los hermosos paisajes marinos donde la naturaleza surge en su mayor esplendor. Él recomienda a los principiantes buscar empresas reconocidas para certificarse y tratar de hacerlo en el mar, no en una alberca.

A la par de su actividad acuática, Ricardo se aficionó al atletismo, convirtiéndose en corredor profesional: “Todo empezó en conjunto: padezco de artritis reumatoide, una enfermedad que provoca dolores muy fuertes. Cuando lo descubrí me puse a investigar y supe que debes hacer ejercicio para mover tu cuerpo; me puse como reto correr y sentí que los dolores disminuían”. Además, hizo cambios drásticos emocionales, actitudinales y adoptó una dieta vegetariana para poder vivir sin medicamentos.

Este deportista combina y disfruta al extremo dos de sus grandes pasiones: bucear y correr maratones.

27 YEARS CULTIVATING HISTORY

D

a v id G ra b it ske ’s l ife ha s b e e n li n ked to museums over the last 27 years. Before coming to the border, he led the Minnesota Historical Society for nearly a decade. He was recently named director of the El Paso Museum of History in the city of El Paso, Texas.

Border Heritage talked with David about his new position, and he feels very pleased: “I am very happy to be here. I brought my family, my wife Hollie and my three children; everyone likes El Paso”. The members of the El Paso Museum of History Foundation organized a warm reception to welcome him.

Grabitske has a Ph.D. in Business Administration and a Master’s in Public Administration. In addition, he is the author of the book “Building Museums: A Handbook for Small and Midsize Organizations”, which was nominated for the 2013 Minnesota Book A w a rd s. Now , o ne o f his ta sks is to ra i s e th e museum’s level and make better use of the collection so that it is more attractive.

As an educational space for the community, this museum promotes the comprehension and importance of multicultural history of the border region known as El Paso del Norte. Through exhibitions and programs, society is involved to explore a variety of human experiences: it encourages them to know the past and reflect on their own place in history.

Además, es autor del libro “Construyendo museos: un manual para pequeñas y medianas organizaciones”, que fue nominado para el Premio Libro de Minnesota 2013. Ahora, una de sus tareas es elevar el nivel del museo y hacer un mejor uso de la colección, de manera que sea más atractivo.

This project came to El Paso to build a bridge towards multiculturalism: the “Frontera” play strengthens it.

T

he theater company Jazz Vilá Project was born in Havana, Cuba, three years ago with the idea of generating interest among young people for the performing arts and with the desire to present a play that was a gift for them.

Its representative, Jazz Vilá, is an actor, director and playwright who, after making his first montage “Skyscraper”, managed to turn this project into a professional company that already has more than five plays in its repertoire. That enthusiasm created friendship and cultural bridges between the United States and Cuba, which made it possible to release his second play, “Eclipse”, in Florida.

Later, Jazz Vilá arrived to El Paso: “I presented a work plan of this first play ‘Skyscraper’ to sow the seed including local actors. The purpose is to sustain a permanent project since this city has a great economic, tourist and cultural growth.”

The “Frontera” play is inspired by the condition of three border states that converge (Texas, New Mexico and Chihuahua). “This communion creates a lot of possibilities because society is very mixed in terms of language and customs. This inspired me a lot to create the love story of Romeo and Juliet, of Shakespeare, contextualized in a contemporary tone where the audience is part of it. The play speaks of how borders do not divide us, but add up. One example is that we have Cuban, Venezuelan, Mexican and American actors.”

“Frontera” was premiered on November 13 at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and the idea is to make a 2018 season during the International Festival of Culture.

L

a compañía de teatro Jazz Vilá Project surgió en la Habana, Cuba, hace tres años, con la idea de acercar a los jóvenes al arte escénico y con el afán de presentar una obra que fuera un regalo para ellos.

Su representante, Jazz Vilá, es un actor, director y dramaturgo que, luego de realizar su primer montaje “Rascacielos”, logró convertir su proyecto en una compañía profesional que ya cuenta con más de cinco obras en su repertorio. Ese entusiasmo creó puentes de amistad y cultura entre Estados Unidos y Cuba, lo cual posibilitó estrenar su segunda obra, “Eclipse”, en Florida.

Posteriormente, Jazz Vilá llegó a El Paso: “Presenté un plan de trabajo de esta primera obra “Rascacielos” para sembrar la semilla incluyendo actores locales.

El propósito es sostener un proyecto permanente, ya que esta ciudad tiene un gran crecimiento económico, turístico y cultural”.

La obra “Frontera” está inspirada en la condición de tres estados fronterizos que convergen (Texas, Nuevo 26

México y Chihuahua). “Esta comunión crea una paleta de posibilidades porque la sociedad está muy mezclada en cuanto a lenguaje y costumbres. Esto me inspiró mucho para abordar la historia de amor de Romeo y Julieta, de Shakespeare, contextualizada en un tono contemporáneo donde el público forma parte de ella. La obra habla de cómo las fronteras no nos dividen, sino que suman; un ejemplo es que tenemos actores cubanos, venezolanos, mexicanos y norteamericanos”.

“Frontera” fue estrenada el 13 de noviembre en la Universidad de Texas en El Paso (UTEP) y la idea es poder hacer una temporada en 2018 durante el Festival Internacional de Cultura.

Este proyecto llegó a El Paso para tender un puente hacia la multiculturalidad: la obra “Frontera” lo fortalece.

Cello expert, creative artist, genius and extraordinary writer, he proved to be a musical prodigy since he was a child.

ndoubtedly, Carlos Prieto has no ta b ly e nric he d t he ce l lo repertoire by releasing more than 90 musical works, most of them dedicated to himself, by the main composers of Mexico, Ibero-America, Spain and other countries.

During his visit to the Ciudad Juarez-El Paso border, the cello adventurer, revered throughout the world, presented a journey through his music and letters at two events offered at the Smart Civic Center and the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso, Texas.

night with friends and special guests took place during the elegant dinner offered in honor of Pedro Ferriz De Con, in the city of El Paso, Texas.

The residence of Dr. Alejandro Rivas was the place where Ferriz De Con began his tour around the United States. There, he listened a t t e n t i ve ly t o t h e n e e d s a n d suggestions that the compatriots and the community of Mexican roots that live in the American Union had.

But not everything was about politics since the attendees had the opportunity to have conversations with the protagonist of the night, who was friendly at all times, with laughter, anecdotes and a warm toast.

The main element of the complex, made of aluminium, glass and concrete, consists of a large circular place of 400 square meters covered by a translucent plastic dome which, at the time was an innovation in the Mexican construction. In addition, there are two semicircular rooms that are communicated by a corridor.

In its beginnings, the building was the Museum of Art and History. It housed collections that showed the stages of Mexican art, from archaic cultures to the latest trends. It was also used to show Mexican handicrafts, customs and the industrial and commercial development of the country.

THE YOUTH SYMPHONY OF CIUDAD JUAREZ

The project enriches the culture of the border in a healthy and harmonious environment.

any agree that music is the language of the soul, the most direct art to touch the heart.

With that spirit, a project emerged integrated by young musicians who, with great commitment, m a k e u p t h e Yo u t h Symphony Orchestra of Ciudad Juarez.

This orchestra started with their activities in March of the present year, under the direction of Guillermo Quezada Novela. In each presentation we can see the love and passion of the young musicians, who have participated in o t h e r p ro j e c t s o f t h e entity and consider themselves lucky due to

the good response from institutions, entrepreneurs and the society in general.

The orchestra works hard through the realization of events in order to be able to obtain resources and acquire the total of instruments that are needed. Their vision is to go as far as possible. The director, who loves art and leaves this example in every student, tries to achieve it.

Con este espíritu surgió un proyecto integrado por jóvenes músicos que

HISPANIC HERITAGE DAY

T

he Andalusian art, composed by the dance, singing and the guitar music, merged into a single artistic expression that filled the celebration of the Hispanic Heritage Day with energy in El Paso, Texas.

The great Spanish celebration, which year after year, since the connection of Mesoamerican and Spanish cultures in 1492, reminds us of cultural miscegenation and the communion with motherland, is a source of pride for the border community.

In an act of solidarity and sharing, the Honorary Consul of Spain, Martha Vera, together with the Cultural Society of Spain that Hilda Kelly presides, led a distinguished ceremony in the facilities of the Coronado Country Club, in an event that seeks to promote and preserve the Spanish traditions in the American Union.

An exquisite five course dinner, prepared by the famous chef Mikel de Luis, was accompanied by four Spanish wines that delighted the senses of the attendees in a culinary adventure, while the subtle movement, the ferocious stomping and the deep laments of the dancers adorned the moment masterfully preformed by La Imi Arte Flamenco and the singer Vicente Griego.

Night of poetry, in addition to a theatrical performance by the “Los Actores de Héctor Serrano” company, which made the guests laugh, in addition to enjoying the music performed by the quartet of instrumental enable “Euterpe”, from Ciudad Juarez.

The presence of the Honorary Consul of Spain in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Albert J. Gallegos; the Consul of Mexico in El Paso, Texas, Marcos Bucio, and the renowned Chihuahua sculptor Sebastian was highlighted in this gala.

Dignifying our roots through an element of union and consolidation of the Hispanic world is the purpose of this celebration that earmarks its profits to benefit the Scholarship Fund for students.

The alternative, according to his group, is to renegotiate NAFTA because it is important to modernize it to make it better than the current one. “Mexican companies have to continue working on our competitiveness to be well. We see optimistic roads and although NAFTA is important, it is not the only thing that exists.”

“A key point for this situation is that we Mexicans support our government,” he says, in addition to “continuing to make synergy and collaborating with the other players (United States) to tell the success stories of the border and the integration to make Mexico a productive region”.

Emilio Cadena emphasized that the link between Mexico and the United States begins at the border and spreads all the way through the north and to the south. In general terms, Mexico has a fantastic workforce, a demography of great value for the region, the country and, above all, people who like to work in the industry. He also mentioned that Ciudad Juarez alone has 280 thousand employees of one million 200 thousand residents, and many of those are indirect jobs that are outside of Juarez, he said.

ow that I visited Barcelona, I can say that it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It is fa m o u s f o r i t s e a r ly t w e n t i e t h c e n t u r y architecture where the modernist style predominates and distinguishes it from the others. This “art nouveau” by Antoni Gaudí can be seen in diverse buildings such as parks (Park Güell), big mansions (Batlló and Milá houses, for example), hospitals and the emblem of the Catalan art: the Sagrada Familia.

Seeing so many daydream spaces with curves, shapes, and vivid natural colors, which remain original in spite of time, makes us understand that we are in a city where art flourishes.

After walking around the city, the smell of paella made us want to try this delicious traditional dish and the accompany it with a glass of red wine. But not eve r y t hing is p a e l l a a nd ta p a s: Ba rce lon a i s distinguished by its avant-grade and creative chefs, who combine traditional flavors with modern techniques to give us a unique sensory experience.

We continued our trip by visiting the Cathedral of Barcelona: the Sagrada Familia, of great heigh and majesty, impressive for its original beauty. This monumental work of art by Gaudí was projected with great ambition in 1882; so much, that there are still 50

more years left to complete it. We were told that the great genius asked for money from house to house to continue his work, although he would never see it completed. The building has three facades, each one dedicated to the birth, passion, and glory of Jesus Christ. In addition, its beautiful towers, arranged like tall trees in a forest, are loaded with natural forms.

We also had the opportunity to visit one of the most famous stadiums: the Camp Nou, property of Futbol Club Barcelona. The site, cataloged with the highest distinction by the UEFA, has a museum on this sport, where innovative resources of the exhibition impress the audience since it is as avant-grade as the rest of the city.

Museums are a big part of this artistic city. The ones that we enjoyed the most are the Museu Picassso and the one from Joan Mirรณ Foundation. Admiring the work of these Catalan plastic artists who were a big influence in the art history of the world is essential for visitors.

There is a lot of life in Barcelona during the summer and the night is more of an incentive than an obstacle.

The gothic area of the old historic center, with its narrow streets, is the place for bars and places to dance, but young people also gather in public squares.

To finalize our trip, we took the emblematic walk along the Ramblas from Plaza Cataluña all the way to the old port. With a temperate climate and among a cheerful crowd, we saw the shops, cafes and restaurants, the street stalls where there are also painters and artists. We went to the Christopher Columbus statue to reach the pier and admire the Mediterranean.

Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city that requires several days so we can see all its charm. We were fascinated by living surrounded with art and getting closer to our Hispanic heritage. Right now, the political situation is complicated, but surely the problem will be solved in the best way for the industrious and creative Catalans. Barcelona is worth it!

El edificio cuenta con tres fachadas, cada una dedicada al nacimiento, la pasión y la gloria de Jesucristo. Además, sus hermosas torres, dispuestas como altísimos árboles en un bosque, están cargadas de formas naturales.

Después de pasear por la ciudad, el olor de la paella nos hizo querer probar este delicioso platillo tradicional y lo acompañamos con una copa de tinto. Pero no todo es paella y tapas: Barcelona se distingue por sus chefs vanguardistas y creativos, que combinan sabores tradicionales con técnicas actuales para darnos una experiencia sensorial única.

Tuvimos también la oportunidad de conocer uno de los estadios más famosos: el Camp Nou, propiedad del Futbol Club Barcelona. El recinto, catalogado por la UEFA con la máxima distinción, cuenta con un museo sobre este deporte, donde impresionan los recursos innovadores de la exhibición, tan vanguardistas como el resto de la ciudad.

Continuamos nuestro paseo visitando la catedral de Barcelona: la Sagrada Familia, de gran altura y majestuosidad, impresionante por su original belleza.

La vida inunda Barcelona en verano y la noche es más incentivo que obstáculo. El barrio gótico del antiguo centro histórico, con sus estrechas callejuelas, es el lugar de los bares y sitios para bailar, pero los jóvenes también se reúnen en las plazas públicas.

Para terminar nuestro viaje, hicimos el emblemático paseo por las ramblas desde la Plaza Cataluña hasta el puerto antiguo. Con un clima templado y entre una alegre multitud, vimos las tiendas, los cafés y restaurantes, los puestos callejeros donde también hay pintores y dibujantes. Desembocamos a la estatua de Cristóbal Colón para llegar al muelle y admirar el Mediterráneo.

Barcelona es una ciudad cosmopolita que requiere de varios días

para mostrarnos todo su encanto.

Nos fascinó vivir rodeados de arte y acercarnos a nuestra herencia hispana. Ahora la situación política es complicada, pero seguramente el problema se resolverá de la mejor manera para los industriosos y creativos catalanes. ¡Barcelona vale mucho la pena!

urante su gira de trabajo por la ciudad de El Paso, Texas, el embajador de México en los Estados Unidos, Gerónimo Gutiérrez Fernández, destacó el avance de las negociaciones del Tratado del Libre Comercio con América del Norte (TLCAN) y manifestó que estamos en un momento definitivo con una relación más madura, expresando que “convencer a la gente de la importancia de la relación bilateral es mi trabajo”. Agregó que es una relación que aporta beneficios hacia ambos lados y que en los últimos 30 años no se había manifestado una situación tan compleja como la que enfrentamos hoy.

A large number of people went to the El Paso Convention Center to receive free information about some health services, products and finances, among other things.

As it is tradition, the Telemundo TV station in El Paso, Texas, carried out w i t h g re a t s u cce ss t h e Feria de la Familia 2017 (2017 Family Fair) in its eleventh edition, an entertainment event with live music, activities and great surprises.

The host of the “12 Corazones” television show Penélope Menchaca, the regional singer Humbe and the actress Mariana Seoane were part of the attraction of this great event, where Hispanic talent and beauty were also recognized through the Miss La Feria de la Familia 2017 contest.

Como ya es tradición, la cadena Telemundo en El Paso, Texas, llevó a cabo con gran éxito la Feria de la Familia 2017 en su decimoprimera edición, un evento de entretenimiento, música en vivo, actividades y grandes sorpresas.

La conductora del programa de televisión “12 Corazones”, Penélope Menchaca, el cantante regiomomontano Humbe y la actriz Mariana Seoane fueron parte del atractivo de este gran evento, donde también se reconoció el talento y la belleza hispana a través del concurso Miss La Feria de la Familia 2017.

“FIESTA CELEBRATION”: FROM ADVERSITY TO SUCCESS

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of El Paso held its great annual “Fiesta Celebration” event to enjoy with its members the success obtained during 2017.

The guest of the night was the ex-star of the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees, Alex Rodriguez, considered one of the best baseball players of all time and founder of large companies in the United States and Latin America.

Rodriguez shared part of his story and his vision to turn adversity into opportunities.

The El Paso Civic Center was crowded with the presence of important business personalities in the region, who enjoyed a very special program accompanied by an exquisite dinner.

During the edition of this gala, directors of the Chamber presented a recognition to Renard U. Johnson, president and director of the METI Inc. company. Also, due to their vision of excellence, Judge William E. Moody, his wife Maggie and their son Joe were awarded for their constant work for the benefit of the community.
