t is noticeable that many cultures have been involved in Seville today. Seville is located in the south of Spain, and it is the capital of the region of Andalucía. Many years ago, it was the most important city of the countr y and the area due to its proximity to the Guadalquivir River, the main point for commerce in Europe. Esta obra diseñada por el arquitecto alemán Jurgen Mayer cuenta también con un mirador donde se puede apreciar el centro, o casco antiguo, y admirar el contraste arquitectónico que muestra las diferentes culturas que han tocado la ciudad.

SHOW DE FLAMENCO: No hay como presenciar este dramático baile en el Museo de Baile Flamenco, una de las casas de flamenco más reconocidas. Además de disfrutar del baile, también puedes adquirir paquetes en los que incluyen las famosas tapas y el exquisito vino de la región para una velada memorable.

PLAZA ESPAÑA: Un ícono arquitectónico en donde puedes pasar toda una tarde empapado en cultura. Construido en 1928 por motivo de la Exposición Ibero-Americana, es otra significativa muestra de la mezcla armoniosa de estilos arquitectónicos tales como el Barroco, Renacentista y Moro.

Enseñanzas Que Dejan Huella PROFILES

“L

a Rosa del Desierto,” sculptural piece created by the Mexican artist Sebastian, represents what is now a symbol of the identity of our region. In the third edition, this prize defines the value of those who deser ve it. It is obtained by men and women forged in the midst of adversity, and like the roses, they open to life to give themselves as a present.

This reason is why this year, we dedicate an homage to three personalities that all along their life have shared with us their knowledge in medicine, economy, and the arts. We highlight their notable contribution to humanity, thus taking their place in this border histor y.

O riginally from Chihuahua, she migrated to the-

United States in 1966 with her parents and eight siblings. She studied Geology at the University of Texas at El Paso. She’s recognized by her ability in business. For this, she received the prize for distinguished Mexican in 2018 by The Instituto de Los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME), The Women’s National Institute (INMUJERES), and the Coordination of Countr y Brand and International Media of the Mexican government. During her brilliant career in boosting the border ’s economy, she has held the following positions:

• Vice-president of the Southwest Maquiladora Association • Board member of the National and Local BBVA Compas Bank • Director and President of the World Trade Center Council • Board member of the Maquiladora Association, now INDEX • Director of the Council of the US -Mexico Border District Export since 2008

She also has received the distinguished “2006 Woman of the Year ” by the USHCC National and Regional Hispanic Business, Small Business Administration’s Minority Women-Owned of the Year 2003.

Es reconocida por su habilidad en los negocios, derivado de ello recibió el premio Mexicanos Distinguidos 2018 creado por el Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME), el Instituto Nacional de las Mujeres (INMUJERES) y la Coordinación de Marca País y Medios Internacionales de la Presidencia de la República. Durante su brillante trayectoria en el impulso a la economía de la frontera ha ocupado los siguientes cargos:

B orn in Los Angeles, California, in 1960, since

her childhood, she has been passionate about the arts. In the late 70´s she moved with her family to El Paso. She studied her primar y education until she earned her Bachelor ’s Degree in Liberal Arts from The University of Texas at El Paso.

For 30 years, she worked in Radio. And thanks to her charisma, her presence, and voice, she entered the world of television journalism in which, for several years, she was the news anchor on Channel 9.

She has been the Executive Director for the El Paso Pro-Music Association for the last eight years working along with the artistic director and cellist, Grammy winner, Zuill Bailey. Her tireless work has led her to promote high-level artists. At the same time, she directs educational programs and collaborates with the Music Departmentat UTEP. She volunteers for the Rio Grande Foundation, the Plaza Classic Film Festival, and the Humane Society of El Paso.

Her family established the Mickey Solis Scholarship for Jefferson High School in honor of her late husband, lawyer Miguel Solis. She has won several prizes like UTEP ’s Golden Nugget, the YMCA Reach, Media Personality of the year by the National Social Workers Association, and the Ruben Salazar Journalism prize by the Mujer Obrera organization.

a Rosa del Desierto”, pieza escultórica creada por el artista mexicano Sebastián representa ya un símbolo de identidad para nuestra región. En la tercera edición de su entrega, esta presea define el valor del merecedor, ya que solo la obtienen aquellos hombres y mujeres forjados en medio de las adversidades y a semejanza con las rosas, se abren a la vida para entregarse como un regalo.

Por esta razón, en este año, dedicamos un sentido homenaje a tres personalidades que a lo largo de su vida nos han compartido sus enseñanzas en el campo de la medicina, la economía y las artes.

Destacamos su contribución notable a la humanidad ganándose un lugar en la historia de esta frontera.

A finales de los 70 se mudó con su familia a El Paso, donde cursó su educación básica hasta graduarse como licenciada en Artes Liberales en la Universidad de Texas en El Paso. Durante 30 años ha trabajado en la radiodifusión, y gracias a su carisma, presencia y voz, ingresó al mundo periodístico televisivo en el que durante algunos años participó como presentadora de noticias del Canal 9 local.

Desde hace ocho años es Directora Ejecutiva de La Asociación El Paso Pro-Música junto al director artístico y cellista ganador del Grammy, Zuill Bailey. Su incansable labor la ha llevado a promover artistas de alto nivel, al tiempo que dirige programas educativos y colabora con el Departamento de Música de UTEP. Es voluntaria para la Fundación Río Grande, el Festival de Plaza Classic Film y la Sociedad Humanitaria de El Paso.

Su familia estableció el Fondo de Becas Mickey Solís para estudiantes de la preparatoria Jefferson en honor a su difunto esposo, el abogado Miguel Solís. Ha ganado diversos premios como: Golden Nugget de UTEP, YWCA Reach, Persona de Medios del año por la Asociación Nacional de Trabajadores Sociales y el Premio de Periodismo Rubén Salazar, de la organización “ La Mujer Obrera ”.

Has worked in the Children’s Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and is certified by the American Board of Surger y and Orthopedics. He has occupied important positions in the Hospitals of Providence Memorial Campus at El Paso, Tx Also, he is the Chairman of the Board of the Sam Young Rehabilitation Hospital since 1994.

Ha trabajado en el Hospital para Niños Enfermos en Toronto, Ontario, Canadá y cuenta con una certificación por la Junta Americana de Cirugía Ortopédica. Ha ocupado importantes cargos en el Hospital Providence Memorial de El Paso Texas. También es Presidente de la Junta del Hospital de Rehabilitación Sam Young desde 1994 hasta la actualidad.

Nuevo acuerdo de los

Estados Unidos - México - Canadá

USMCA

I

n the midst of the impeachment trial of Donald Trump, the Senate approved the USMCA, which will overhaul NAFTA. Many Border Heritage readers, especially those from Canada or Mexico who work in the United States, are deeply concerned about how USMCA could modify their ability to live and work in the U.S. If so, we have great news for you. Whether you hold a TN visa, or are pursuing a degree that will eventually qualify you for one of the 60 TN occupations, you have nothing to worry about from USMCA, because the new treaty leaves all of the old NAFTA visa provisions in place. Even better news is that a key (but often forgotten) regulation, remains unchanged by USMCA, and knowing about it may save you a lot of time and money.

A provision called Automatic Visa Revalidation is tucked away in a rarely-read section of the law (Title 22, rather than Title 8, of the Code of Federal Regulations), and gives most TN visa holders the right to travel for two years past the expiration date of their visa.

Each case is unique, and you should consult with us before you try to travel on an expired visa; but, if you are renewing your visa every year, you probably shouldn’t be. nmedio del juicio político del Presidente Donald Trump, el Senado aprobó un nuevo Acuerdo Estados Unidos-México-Canadá (ahora USMCA, por sus siglas en inglés) que reformará el vigente Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (lo que es ahora NAFTA, por sus siglas en inglés). Muchos lectores de Border Heritage, especialmente aquellos de Canadá o México que trabajan en los Estados Unidos, están profundamente preocupados por cómo el USMCA podría modificar su capacidad de vivir y trabajar en los Estados Unidos.

Si es así, tenemos buenas noticias para usted. Ya sea que tenga una visa TN o esté buscando un título profesional que eventualmente lo califique para una de las 60 ocupaciones bajo el marco de la visa TN, no tiene nada de qué preocuparse del USMCA porque el nuevo acuerdo deja en vigencia todas las disposiciones previas de visa establecidas en el NAFTA. Una noticia aún mejor es que una regulación clave (pero a menudo olvidada) permanece inalterada por el USMCA, y saberlo puede ahorrarle mucho tiempo y dinero.

A

series of documents, photographs, weapons, munitions, jewelr y and money belonging to the División del Norte, commanded by the General Doroteo Arango, better known as “ Francisco Villa,” were displayed to the assisting public during the private event in which the opening was announced -on a first stage- the Clandestine stash house, representative of the Mexican revolution era.

The site, dates from 1897, ser ved as shelter, office where treaties were signed, also used as armor y and jewelr y and money depot, as well as a resting place for Villa and his troops. In which his brother Hipolito ser ved right when the insurgents fought the dictatorship of Por firio Diaz´s government.

In 1915 (a year before the Columbus attack), agents of the U.S. Customs busted into the property owned by George Benton, located on 329 Leon St. in downtown El Paso. In the place, they found arms and no less than half a million dollars in cash; also, there was jewelr y appraised in almost thirty thousand dollars. According to press reports of that time, Customs Agents only seized the jewelr y -presumed stolen- the cash and some gold coins were left to the Villa´s. na serie de documentos, fotografías, armas, municiones, joyas y dinero pertenecientes a la División del Norte comandada por el General Doroteo Arango, mejor conocido como “ Francisco Villa ”, fueron presentados al público asistente durante un evento privado en el cual se anunció la apertura -en una primera etapa- de la Casa Clandestina de Villa, lugar representativo de la época de la revolución mexicana.

El sitio, cuya construcción data del año 1897, sir vió como refugio, despacho donde firmó tratados, resguardo de armas, joyas y dinero y área de descanso para Villa y su tropa; entre los cuales se encontraba su hermano Hipólito justo en el tiempo que el insurrecto combatió la dictadura del gobierno de Por firio Díaz.

En 1915 (un año antes del ataque a Columbus), agentes de la Aduana de los Estados Unidos irrumpieron al inmueble propiedad de George Benton, ubicado en el 329 de la Calle León en el Centro de la Ciudad de El Paso. Ahí, encontraron armamento, joyas valuadas en aproximadamente 30 mil dólares en aquellos años (4 millones de dolares valor actual) y dinero (500 mil dollares). Según los reportes periodísticos de la época, los aduanales decomisaron el efectivo y algunas monedas de oro. Para hacernos una idea de la cantidad de dinero en la Casa Clandestina en aquellos años, los 500 mil, actualmente equivaldrían a aproximadamente a 12 millones de dólares que se confiscarón La propiedad contaba con una casa principal, una contigua a esta y un patio. Villa habitaba la casa junto a sus sir vientes. En la otra casa dormia su tropa -soldados- “ Los Dorados del Norte” y el patio era de uso común. El inmueble permaneció abandonado por más de quince años.

A group of businessmen decided to rescue the site known today as the Stash House. For them, it was essential to preser ve the histor y of this place; thanks to their spot-on vision made the corresponding paper work, so this place could be more accessible to the public.

Enrique Guajardo, head of the project, gave himself the task of restoration of the first stage, starting with the main house, preser ving the construction details of the era. The first part of the restoration concluded with the pre-opening of a galler y, exhibiting the revolutionar y character´s personal valuables that were found inside of the hose, as well as items donated by other museums.

Un grupo de empresarios, decidió rescatar el sitio que hoy se le conoce como Casa Clandestina. para ellos, era muy importante preser var la historia de este lugar; por lo que gracias a su atinada visión hicieron los tramites correspondientes para que éste tuviera mayor apertura al publico. Enrique Guajardo, cabeza del proyecto, se dio a la tarea de restaurar, en una primera etapa la casa habitación, respetando los detalles de le época. La primera parte de la restauración concluyó con la pre-inauguración de una galería que exhibe valiosos artículos del personaje revolucionario que fueron localizados en su interior, así como objetos donados por otros museos.

Guajardo added that the restoration processes have been made with the most care to preser ve its originality. The following stage consists of finishing the garden, restore the horse stables in which a restaurant-bar will be, enable the restrooms and the kitchen. All these to continue exposing and exchanging the El Paso and Mexico´s histor y.

Guajardo, añadió que han sido muy cuidadosos en los procesos de restauración del edificio a fin de conser var su originalidad. La siguiente etapa consistirá en concluir la construcción del jardín, restaurar las caballerizas donde será un restaurant-bar, habilitar los sanitarios y la cocina; todo esto con el fin de seguir exponiendo e intercambiando la historia entre El Paso y México.

During the inaugural event, historian Cindy Medina welcomed the assistants and special guests, including the First Lady of El Paso, Adair Margo, and in a short speech, talked about the importance of exchanging cultural events between both nations. Also, Mr. Edgar Omar Montes Villa and Mr. Francisco Villa Campa, great-grandson and grandson of the revolutionar y leader respectably, were present at this event. También se contó con la presencia de los señores Edgar Omar Montes Villa y Francisco Villa Campa, bisnieto y nieto del caudillo revolucionario respectivamente, éste último hizo la donación de una réplica de la máscara mortuoria de su abuelo. El toque dramático fue la actuación del los actores: Rafael Alberto Celestino Adame imitador del Gral.

Franciso Villa, y en el papel del Gral. John J. Pershing el General Bernie Sargent, quienes han representando en diferentes eventos históricos a nivel nacional y reunidos de nuevo emblemáticmante despues de ciento cinco años.

As now, the Villa´s Clandestine Stash House has sparked the community interest to turn it into a representative place inside the Union Plaza Barrio. The visitors, especially children, can attend guided visits and discover a part of the secrets of the so-called Pancho Villa´s den.

oday is a day of romanticism, hope, and to cherish who we are and what we have,” said the Argentinian Raul Di Blasio on his “ Concert for lovers,” on Februar y 14 at the Plaza Theater in El Paso, Texas.

Di Blasio, 70, chatted with Border Heritage before his presentation and let us know why he continues being current among the greatest of classical music. “ I love to share with people because I give my life to them through stories and that, mixed with humor and drama makes it unique,” said the composer, also from Zapala, Neuquén, and who has more than 62 years playing the piano.

On stage, he joked and chat with the audience. He told them funny anecdotes of his melodies, also about places and people that inspired him throughout his career. He stated that he is ver y fortunate to step on many venues before thousands of people.

According to him, the connection with his Mexican and Mexican American fans is special. “ Having them is a blessing because they are unusual, loving and, dedicated,” he said.

Di Blasio defines himself as an adventurous man because his hyperactivity led him to leave his countr y to find himself at home in ever y corner of the world. He recalled that although he began his training under the classical genre, popular music has given him the greatest satisfaction throughout his career.

In his philosophy of life, there is always a before and after, and for the moment, he does not intend to leave his career. “ Retiring is a word that does not exist. God will say how, and when, but as of now I will continue playing the piano,” concluded. A sus 70 años de vida y 62 de interacción con los teclados, el argentino charló con Border Heritage previo a su recital y nos hizo saber porqué continúa vigente entre los grandes de la música clásica. “ Me encanta compartir con la gente porque les entrego mi vida a través de historias y eso, combinado con humor y drama lo hace único, dijo el también el compositor, originario de Zapala, Neuquén.

En su interlocución con el público, bromeó al contar anécdotas de sus melodías, lugares y personas que lo inspiraron, asegurando que ha tenido la fortuna de pisar muchos foros ante miles de personas y sin lugar a duda la conexión con el público mexicano y mexicoamericano es especial.

Tenerlo es una bendición porque es inusual, afectuoso y entregado, indicó.

En su descripción como persona y artista se define como un hombre aventurero, pues su hiperactividad lo llevó a salir de su país natal para que cada rincón del mundo fuera su casa. Recordó que, aunque inició su formación bajo el género clásico, la música popular es la que le ha dado mayor satisfacción a lo largo de su trayectoria.

En su filosofía de vida siempre hay un antes y un después, y por el momento no piensa dejar su profesión. “ Retirarme es una palabra que no existe, Dios dirá de qué manera, cómo y cuándo, pero por mi yo seguiré tocando”, concluyó el compositor de los éxitos ’corazón de niño’, ‘ Melissa ’’ y ‘ Gitano’ entre otros, y quien, en este encuentro con sus amigos, estuvo acompañado por la soprano mexicana Bárbara Padilla.

oronavirus or Covid-19, which its scientific name is “SARS-CoV-2”, is an RNA chain Beta-virus and is part of a family of 7 viruses that can affect animals and humans. Four of them are part of up to 25% of common colds. MERS and SARS are also part of Coronaviruses but have a much higher cases fatality of up to 34% and 9.5% respectively. The Covid-19 mutated to a form of greater transmissibility using both the bat and the pangolin as host for this mutation and to be able to jump towards the human species, the “pangolin” is a mammal that feeds on ants and lives in Asia. The virus is called for its glycoproteins in the form of spikes that give it the shape of “Corona”, or crown.

A virus is a substance, it does not belong to the animal or vegetable kingdom, and it reproduces in the body; it works using the human reproduction system, and thus the substance reproduces within the lungs of the human body. It is a respirator y virus that is associated with the family of viruses that roam during winter.

P Cyclists Women’s Race Team started back in 2013 after the local EP Cyclists Club saw the potential, strength, and passion within their riders. With over 300 club members, EP Cyclists proudly took the challenge of forming both men and women racing teams with members from all over El Paso, such as racers coming from New Mexico and Juarez.

El Paso Women’s Race Team has faced many challenges as far as racing certain seasons and having to start from the beginning with new team members but with the continuing support from their club directors Albert Salazar and Pedro Martinez.

Throughout the years, EP Cyclists Women’s Race Team proudly represented their per formance and their team on various local races and races outside of El Paso.

Currently, EP Cyclists Women’s Race Team is directed by Steven Torres, and his mission is to support the current team racers to be the best they can be and to continue discovering and nurturing future athletes. EP Cyclists Women’s Race Team has a total of 10 members; Evelina Aldana 30, Gabriela Valdez 38, Clara Murillo 37, Araceli Gómez 49, Lucía Conde 53, Shentí Estrada 26, Fabiola González 34, Erika Armendariz 36, Laura Medrano 39 and Nathalie Valdez 29, who’s currently taking a break from racing and focusing on her Full Iron Man in Cozumel MX. The Women’s Race Team has various women with different strengths, skills, and levels, but they all come together as one team to race for fun and to win as one.

Their goal and mission are to build a team where each woman empowers each other supporting and helping one another.

Locally, the women’s cycling community has been growing; they aim to encourage women to come together and race, ride and enjoy the beautiful sport of cycling. They want to make a positive impact and grow all together.

Con más de 300 miembros, los ciclistas de EP se enorgullecen de formar el equipo de carrera de hombres y mujeres con miembros en todas las áreas de El Paso, así como corredores de Nuevo México y Juárez.

El equipo de mujeres de El Paso Cyclists se ha enfrentado a muchos desafíos; entre ellos, correr solo en ciertas temporadas y tener que comenzar desde el principio con nuevos miembros, pero siempre con el apoyo continuo de los directores Albert Salazar y Pedro Martínez. A lo largo de los años, el equipo de mujeres ciclistas de EP ha participado con orgullo y gran desempeño en varias carreras locales y fuera de El Paso.

Actualmente, el equipo ciclista femenil de competencia de EP Cyclists está dirigido por Steven Torres y tiene como misión apoyar a sus actuales corredoras para que sean lo mejor que puedan ser y descubrir y entrenar futuras corredoras.

El equipo de mujeres ciclistas de EP tiene un total de 10 miembros; Evelina Aldana 30, Gabriela Valdez 38, Clara Murillo 37, Araceli Gómez 49, Lucía Conde 53, Shentí Estrada 26, Fabiola González 34, Erika Armendariz 36, Laura Medrano 39 y Nathalie Valdez 29, quien actualmente se tomó un descanso de las carreras ciclistas para concentrarse en el Iron Man completo que se llevará a cabo en Cozumel. El equipo de competencia femenil tiene varias mujeres con diferentes fortalezas, habilidades y niveles de rendimiento, pero todas se unen para correr por diversión y para ganar como un solo grupo. Su objetivo y misión es construir un equipo donde cada mujer se empodere y ayude mutuamente.

A nivel local, la comunidad ciclista de mujeres ha ido creciendo y en EP Cyclists se propusieron alentar a las mujeres a unirse, competir, montar en bicicleta y disfrutar del maravilloso deporte del ciclismo; tener un impacto positivo en cada una y unirse para empoderar a otras.

Mexican sculptor Sebastian, the guest of honor, and Yolanda Arriola unveiled of the sculpture X, a distinguished borderland landmark.

s part of the celebrations of the 20th anniversar y of the Southwest University, the institution’s staff and managers unveiled a replica of the X outside the new librar y located in the block of 6207 Montana. The original mega sculpture is located by the Rio Grande on the Ciudad Juarez ’s side.

Yolanda Arriola, Founder of SU, stated that the idea to place the X outside the librar y originated a year ago, and it is intended to honor the sisterhood between the two cities.

The librar y, for exclusive usage to the students, will come to instill the habit of reading. The new facilities are equipped with technological advances so its visitors can complete their academic tasks as well as consult both digital and printed books.

n el marco de los festejos del 20 aniversario de Southwest University -SU- directivos de la institución develaron una réplica de la X en el exterior de la nueva biblioteca ubicada en el 6207 de la calle Montana. La megaescultura original se encuentra ubicada a las orillas del rio Bravo en Ciudad Juárez.

Yolanda Arriola, fundadoraWW de SU manifestó que la colocación de la X, es un proyecto que se originó hace poco más de un año y tiene como fin honrar la hermandad que existe entre ambas ciudades.

La biblioteca, espacio exclusivo para estudiantes de la institución, inculcará el hábito de la lectura a sus usuarios. Las nuevas instalaciones fueron equipadas con los adelantos tecnológicos para que los visitantes puedan realizar sus tareas académicas y consultar tanto libros digitales como físicos.

na atmosfera autentica y fuera de lo convencional creo la magia para ganarse el corazón de los asistentes al “ Conquista Dinner & Fashion Show ”W, una pasarela muy a la moda protagonizada por mujeres y hombres con discapacidad.

Luciendo exclusivos modelos del diseñador juarense Armando Rodríguez, 15 mujeres entre los 12 y 50 años con deficiencias motoras como síndrome de down, autismo, microcefalia y parálisis cerebral se llevaron el aplauso y la admiración durante la cena de gala celebrada el pasado 6 de mar zo en la Terraza Jardín del Centro de Convenciones Cibeles.

La preparación fue ardua para cada una de las participantes, quienes fueron guiadas por profesionales del mundo del modelaje para cuidar a detalle sus movimientos, sin embargo fue su encanto natural el que cautivó sorpresivamente a la audiencia.

En palabras de la fundadora y directora de la asociación civil Alas y Raíces, Maria Luisa Ojeda, Conquista Dinner & Fashion Show, pretende impulsar un cambio de paradigma en la sociedad para que las mujeres en estas condiciones dejen de ser vistas como personas diferentes y dependientes, y en contraparte, logren el reconocimiento como seres de gran valía.

n el marco del 50 aniversario de la compañía El Paso Saddleblanket, se llevó a cabo un evento conjunto para develar la portada de la revista Border Heritage en su edición número 26.

Un nutrido grupo de asistentes atendieron la invitación para ser testigos de este gran acontecimiento y brindar por la ocasión.

Carmen Becerra, directora de Border Heritage Magazine, Dusty y Bonnie Henson, propietarios de Saddle Blanket y como invitados especiales la primera dama de El Paso, Adair Margo y el cónsul de México en El Paso, Mauricio Ibarra Ponce de León, develaron la portada en donde destaca el diseño artístico de los productos textiles que expende el establecimiento de los Henson.
