ylvia Acosta, is the daughter of immigrants from Mexico and she grew up in El Paso, Texas. Her father was a bracero and she is a proud Bel Air Highlander graduate. As a teenager, she was a member of a group called YTweens, a YWCA El Paso del Norte Region program for teen girls. There she developed leadership skills, cultivated a passion for empowering women, and was inspired to continue her education. Today, many years later, her title is Dr. Sylvia Acosta, CEO of YWCA El Paso del Norte Region.

Su padre era bracero y ella esta orgullosa de ser una Highlander graduada de Bel Air. De adolescente fue miembro del grupo YTweens, un programa para adolescentes de la YWCA de la region del Norte de El Paso. Allí desarrollo habilidades de liderazgo, cultivo su pasión para apoderar a las mujeres, y fue inspirada para continuar con sus estudios. Hoy, muchos años después, su titulo es el de Dra. Sylvia Acosta, CEO de la YWCA de la Region Paso Del Norte de El Paso.

After graduating from Bel Air High School, Dr. Acosta received a bachelor’s degree in government from the University of Texas at Austin. She became the first woman and youngest person to lead the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in her hometown. She also received a Master of Arts in Political Science from St. Mary’s University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration from New Mexico State University.

Tras graduarse de la preparatoria Bel Air, la Dra. Acosta recibió su licenciatura en gobierno de la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Fue la primera dama y las más joven en dirigir la Camara de Comercio Hispana en su ciudad natal. También recibió su Maestría en Ciencias Políticas de la Universidad de St. Mary’s y un Doctorado en Filosofía y Administración Educativa de la Universidad del Estado de Nuevo Mexico.

Her 25 years of education and nonprofit experience include time as Chief Operating Officer for AVANCE, Inc., a national childhood education program based in San Antonio, Associate Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Texas at El Paso, Assistant Dean for Development and Public Relations at New Mexico State University, and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Constituent Development at the University of California, Irvine. Each of these experiences helped prepare her for the role as CEO of the largest YWCA in the United States. Not only is she dedicated to providing high-quality and excellent services, but she considers the organization’s mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, dignity, and freedom for all her life’s mission.

Sus 25 años de educación y su experiencia en organizaciones sin fines de lucro suman tiempo como Directora de Operaciones para AVANCE Inc, un programa nacional de educación infantil ubicado en San Antonio, Vicepresidenta Asociada de Desarrollo y Relaciones con Ex Alumnos en la Universidad del Estado de Nuevo México y Vicerrector Asistente de Desarrollo Constituyente en la Universidad de Irvine California. Cada una de estas experiencias la ayudaron a prepararse para su rol como CEO del YWCA más grande en los Estados Unidos. No solo se ha dedicado a proveer una alta calidad y excelente servicio, sino que considera la misión de la organización el erradicar el racismo, apoderar a las mujeres y promover la paz, la justicia y dignidad y la libertad como misión de vida.

“When I heard about the CEO position with YWCA, I knew this was my calling,” Acosta said. “This mission is everything I believe in and I get to share that mission every day in the city I call home.”

YWCA’s services include the Sara McKnight Transitional Living Center for domestic violence survivors, a free workforce development program called L.I.F.T., eight highly rated Early Learning Academies for children ages 0-5, three affordable housing locations, a teen leadership program, more than 40 after school program sites that provide a STEAM-based curriculum, and four fitness and aquatics centers. Dr. Acosta’s goal is to continue providing these critical services to El Pasoans for generations to come, which comes with challenges.

Los servicios de la YWCA incluyen el Centro de Vida Transicional Sara McKnight para los sobrevivientes de violencia domestica, un programa gratuito de fuerza laboral libre llamado L.I.F.T, ocho programas de aprendizaje a temprana edad para niños de 0 a-5 altamente calificado, lugares de vivienda accesibles, un programa de desarrollo en liderazgo para adolescentes, más de 40 programas después de clases que proveen un curriculum basado en STEAM, y cuatro centros acuáticos y de fitness. La destacada paseña tiene como objetivo trabajar para apoyar a su comunidad.

“2019 is YWCA’s 110th anniversary in El Paso,” Acosta said. “We have been a pillar in this community for more than a century and we will continue providing services as long as there are El Pasoans who need us.”

In order to achieve that goal, Dr. Acosta is committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the organization. Under her leadership, YWCA actively seeks new funding sources from grants and corporate giving, to business contracts and renting out their facilities for events. She said the organization still seeks and is hugely grateful for private contributions, but they must also be creative in order to cement YWCA’s future for another 110 years.

As a native El Pasoan and a woman who grew up in YWCA programs, Dr. Sylvia Acosta finds joy every single day as she leads an organization that serves thousands of families and individuals in the community that raised her. She is grateful to the YWCA Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, partners, donors, and participants for all they do every day to support the organization and share its mission.

“In the past 110 years, countless El Paso women have been inspired and empowered through YWCA programs,” Acosta said. “Countless El Pasoans have taken their first steps with us, started their wellness journeys with us, found a second chance with YWCA, and all of that continues to this day.”

‘2019 marca el aniversario 110 de la YWCA en El Paso,’ dijo Acosta. ‘Hemos sido el pilar en esta comunidad por mas de un siglo y seguiremos proporcionando services siempre y cundo haya Paseños que nos necesiten.’

Para poder cumplir esa meta, la Dra. Acosta está comprometida a asegurar el sustento a largo plazo de la organización. Bajo su liderazgo, la YWCA busca nuevas fuentes de financiamiento de subsidios y donaciones corporativas, hasta contratos de negocios y rentando sus espacios para eventos. Recalco que la organización aun busca y esta agradecida por los contribuyentes privados, pero que también deben ser creativos para cimentar el futuro de la YWCA por otros 110 años.

Como nativa de El Paso y mujer que creció en los programas de la YWCA, la Dra. Acosta encuentra alegría todos los días mientras lidera la organización que sirve a miles de familias y individuos en la comunidad que la crio. Está agradecida con la Mesa Directiva de la YWCA, el staff, los voluntarios, los socios, los donantes y los participantes por lo que hacen diariamente para apoyar la organización y compartir su misión.

La exitosa ópera con mariachi “Cruzar la Cara de la Luna” llegó a El Paso.

A

Mexican-American man questions his place in the world, after abandoning his home to go in search of a better future. It follows the story of Laurentino, reflection of the experiences of many immigrants that face nostalgia and separation from the family.

‘Cruzar la Cara de La Luna’ is the first opera with mariachi that carries a message of union and fraternity. Since its premiere in 2008 in Houston Texas it has received praises for being capable of transmitting feelings which the audience can identify with.

The play makes reference to the monarca Butterfly, the queen born to travel, but who knows where she belongs.

The plot is much more moving thanks to the extraordinary voices of nine artists that narrate Laurentino’s journey since the decade of the sixties, when he crosses, to the present. The protagonist will try to fight against forgetting the past and uniting his two worlds.

This musical also has the magic of the colorful scenes and is capable of mixing multiple elements: past and future, Mexico and the United States, as well as several music genres. All this managed to fascinate the audience.

In its ninth year, after having traveled through the most important Opera houses in Paris, New York, Chicago, San Diego and Arizona, amongst others.

This show is spruced up with the presence of mariachi Los Camperos and presented itself at the Abraham Chavez Theatre of the city of El Paso, where border residents were favored with a vibrant show that honors Mexican traditions.

n hombre mexicano estado uniden se cuestiona su lugar en el mundo, luego de abandonar su hogar para buscar un mejor futuro. Es la historia de Laurentino, reflejo de las vivencias de muchos inmigrantes que enfrentan la separación y la nostalgia de la familia.

“Cruzar la Cara de la Luna” es la primera ópera con mariachi que lleva un mensaje de unión y fraternidad. Desde su estreno en 2008, en la ciudad de Houston, Texas, ha recibido elogios por ser capaz de transmitir sentimientos con los que se identifica la audiencia.

La obra hace referencia a la mariposa monarca, esa reina que nace para viajar, pero sabe a dónde pertenece. La trama resulta más conmovedora gracias a las extraordinarias voces de nueve artistas que narran la travesía de Laurentino desde la década de los años sesenta, cuando cruza la línea, hasta la actualidad.

El protagonista intentará luchar contra el olvido y unir sus dos mundos.

Este espectáculo musical tiene también la magia del colorido ambiente de las escenas y logra fusionar múltiples elementos: pasado y futuro, México y Estados Unidos, además de varios géneros musicales. Todo esto logra fascinar al público.

En su noveno año, luego de haber recorrido las más importantes casas de ópera de París, Nueva York, Chicago, San Diego y Arizona, entre otras, esta obra engalanada con el mariachi Los Camperos se presentó en el Teatro Abraham Chávez de la ciudad de El Paso, donde los fronterizos fueron favorecidos con un vibrante espectáculo que homenajea las tradiciones mexicanas.

ADAIR MARGO Art Conserver She has promoted art in her own gallery and has dedicated herself to preserve the legacy of the muralist and historian Tom Lea. She presided in the Art Committee hand in hand with Laura Bush, from whom she received the medal Presidential Citizens. She participated in the National Commission of the United States for the UNESCO and received the honor Águila Azteca: the highest award presented by the Mexican Government to a foreign citizen.

Close to 300 invited guests gathered to celebrate the path of three personalities that continue leaving a mark in specialized areas of art and culture, business and in the health sector.

On this occasion, the first lady Adair Margo, the entrepreneur Cesar Viramontes and Ms. Guadalupe De la Vega were the recipients of the award given they are identified for their altruism.

Yolanda Arriola, director of Southwest University and Carmen Becerra, editor of Border Magazine, in effort with the Sebastián Foundation were those in charge of awarding the sculptures to those recognized, which at all times received praises and signs of affection by the attendees.

During the reception, held at the University’s event center attendees enjoyed a three course meal and exquisite beverages accompanied by extraordinary music from the classic quartet Motif International.

A

fter 27 editions, the Anual History Conference of San Elizario Texas for the first time decided to incorporate in its program, activities in Ciudad Juárez and the petroglyphs of Samalayuca.

This past April 25th, a group of 25 people left very early from a border location with the purpose of visiting the first place, the Museum of Archaeology and History in El Chamizal. In this cultural compound, which re-opened its doors last year, offered them a talk by the architect, Alba Maynez, responsible for the expansion of new spaces and museology.

Afterward, they toured the museum while exchanging information and opinions in relation with the Zona Natural Protegida de Samalayuca (The Natural Protected Zone of Samalayuca), the regions’ archaeology, the culture of Casas Grandes with an epic center in Paquimé, the contact with the ancient and Spanish culture and of course the historic return of the territories of El Chamizal to Mexico by the Government of the United States.

At the end, before proceeding to the Samalayucan route, the visitors savored delicious burritos. Once at the desert, the visitors traveled by foot about 45 minutes on winding paths in order to get to one of the most emblematic sites of the petroglyphs zones.

Just as the archaeologist Enrique Chacon explained, there are at least five thousand rocks of this type, elaborated by distinct generations for more than two thousand years.

The engineer Gerardo Segura and his team were in charge of preparing an exquisite carne asada in the facilities of the public land, Villa Luz. Around mid afternoon, visitors enjoyes walking through the crests of the enormous white sand dunes at the sunset of a beautiful day of cultural exchange.

LA CONFERENCIA ANUAL DE SAN ELIZARIO POR CIUDAD JUÁREZ Y SAMALAYUCA LIFE STYLE

L

uego de 27 ediciones, la Conferencia Anual de Historia de San Elizario Texas decidió, por primera vez, incorporar en su programación actividades en Ciudad Juárez y la zona de petrograbados de Samalayuca.

El pasado 25 de abril, un grupo de más de 25 personas partió muy temprano desde aquella localidad fronteriza con el propósito de visitar, en primer lugar, el Museo de Arqueología e Historia de El Chamizal. En este recinto cultural, que el año pasado reabrió sus puertas, les ofreció una plática la arquitecta Alba Máynez, encargada de la ampliación de nuevas salas y de la actualización museográfica.

Posteriormente, hicieron un recorrido por el museo intercambiando información y opiniones relacionadas con la Zona Natural Protegida de Samalayuca, la arqueología de la región, la cultura Casas Grandes con epicentro en Paquimé, el contacto de las culturas antiguas con la española y, desde luego, la histórica devolución de los territorios de El Chamizal a México por parte del gobierno de los Estados Unidos.

Al final, antes de proseguir camino a Samalayuca, los visitantes saborearon unos ricos burritos. Ya en el desierto, los visitantes transitaron a pie, durante 45 minutos, veredas sinuosas para llegar a uno de los sitios emblemáticos de la zona de petrograbados. Como lo explicó el arqueólogo Enrique Chacón, en este sitio existen al menos cinco mil piedras de este tipo, elaboradas por distintas generaciones desde hace más de dos mil años.

A

little less than 30 Kilometers to the South of Ciudad Juárez, is where Samalayuca is located, epic center of the enigmatic and attractive zone of dunes y archeological vestiges on rock that continue to astonish frequent visitors and strangers.

Inside the grand extension that takes up the Desert of Chihuahua, between the South of the United States and north-central of Mexico this site of dunes exists, some of them with 120 meters high. Hundreds of visitors attend to enjoy of its white sands, its sunsets or to observe the plants as they change color according to the season.

This peculiar site is full of history. Its eyes of water and springs provided for the old hunters and gatherers that lived in these lands since more than 8 thousand years ago. Thousands of images elaborated based on a hit or percussion help us to comprehend the forms of life of those societies that learned to adapt to the natural environment.

The petroglyphs contain countless images related to the sun, the astros, the animals and plants, moreover, the religious expressions are proper of a site that played a very important role in this sense.

That muddy legacy trapped in the rocks constructs a language of symbolic forms that evoque myths, rituals and cosmic vision of a prehistoric society willing to perpetuate its memory for the benefit of present and par generations.

poco menos de 30 kilómetros al sur de Ciudad Juárez, se ubica Samalayuca, epicentro de la enigmática y atractiva zona de dunas y vestigios arqueológicos en piedra que siguen sorprendiendo a propios y extraños.

Dentro de la gran extensión territorial que abarca el Desierto de Chihuahua, entre el sur de los Estados Unidos y el norte-centro de México, existe este sitio de dunas, algunas de ellas con más de 120 metros de altura. A este lugar asisten cientos de visitantes a disfrutar de sus arenas blancas, de los atardeceres o de observar plantas que cambian de matiz según la estación del año.

Este peculiar sitio está lleno de historia. Sus ojos de agua o manantiales abastecieron a los antiguos cazadores y recolectores que habitaron estas tierras desde hace más de 8 mil años. Sin embargo, lo más valioso que hemos heredado de aquellas comunidades es su arte en piedra, donde plasmaron ideas, conceptos y visiones asociados a su cultura.

Dunas de hasta 120 metros de altura levantan las crestas para ofrecernos la belleza de tesoros escondidos.

o strengthen ties and to promote the cultural richness between established municipalities through the route of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, five Mexican cities signed the Letter of Sisterhood with the city of San Elizario Texas, in the framework of the 28th Anual Conference of Genealogy and History and Rio Grande Festival in April 1598.

Representatives of the administrations of Hidalgo of Parral, Jimenez, Santa Eulalia and Valle de Allende made a document official that represents the opportunity for the communities of both of sides of the border shrink distances and construct bridges of understanding that facilitate comercial exchange, cultural and economic.

As a part of this great event, conferences and theatrical representations were performed, just like the election of the new queen of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, Cyndi Carrillo.

The Mexican Photographer Carlos Lujan shares beautiful images of his trip through the capital of the world.

F

ew places are as iconic as New York; millions of people from all over the world arrive here to reach their version of the American dream. The city that never sleeps offers the visitor fashion, theatre, movie locations and gastronomic delights. That is why my partner and I decided to go on a New York style vacation.

Happy hour started at The Campbell Bar, a bar crowded by businessmen, established in 1920 inside Grand Central, a place that has served as a prison, apartment and filming location for series like Gossip Girl. We then strolled through the beach at Conney Island and admired the urban art the fishing zone offers which has a very special taste.

The next day we walked through the Brooklyn bridge, despite the intense cold, toward Dumbo. With my hands almost freezing, I was able to capture the beautiful view to later walk in to a local restaurant called Ramen Bar and devoured a delicious soup of Chinese noodles.

There, the authentic Japanese food is combined with an excellent service.

Charged with energy we felt reckless and decided to visit secondhand stores where it is incredible how many objects of prestigious brands they sell, from designer sun glasses to the first edition of The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss.

After watching a horror movie at the four-story cinema in Times Square, we did a stop at the Museum of Contemporary Art and another one at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, a beautiful edification, known by its classic ballet shows and the movie Black Swann The City which in the day looks majestic, is magical at night.

Lights, sounds and food aromas stun the senses, although that sensation is addictive. We enjoyed the excitement of the incredible Manhattan with no hurries, fully.

ocos lugares son tan icónicos como Nueva York; miles de personas de todas partes llegan aquí para alcanzar su versión del sueño americano. La ciudad que nunca duerme ofrece al visitante moda, teatro, locaciones de películas y deleites gastronómicos. Por eso mi pareja y yo decidimos tomarnos unos días de vacaciones al estilo neoyorkino.

La hora feliz empezó en El Apartamento Campbell, bar concurrido por personas de negocios, establecido en 1920 dentro de Gran Central, cuyo local ha fungido cómo cárcel, departamento y locación de series como Gossip Girl. Después paseamos por la playa de Conney Island y admiramos el arte urbano de esta zona de pescadores que tiene un sabor especial.

Al siguiente día caminamos por el puente de Brooklyn, a pesar del intenso frío, hacia Dumbo. Con las manos casi heladas pude capturar el hermoso paisaje para después entrar en un local llamado Ramen Bar y comer una deliciosa sopa de fideos chinos.

Ahí, la comida japonesa auténtica se combina con el excelente servicio

Después de ver una película de terror en el cine de cuatro pisos en Time Square, hicimos una parada en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo y otra en el Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, hermosa edificación conocida por sus obras de ballet clásico y la película Black Swan.

he Sun City Crit took place on March 30th in Downtown El Paso, a confirmation that professional cycling had officially landed in the Borderland. After years of failed attempts by local organizations to introduce the sport to West Texas and 11 years after the city sponsored the Tour of El Paso, professional teams and riders from all over the world made their way to the Sun City.

Upon arriving, the professional cyclists explored our diverse border region on two wheels, ready to open the 2019 USA CRITS racing calendar, the first of 10 stops on the calendar.

As a native El Pasoen, I have spent the last decade traveling all over Latin America as a cycling journalist. I immediately felt a sense of pride, knowing we would have the chance to show off our beautiful city and the climbs and terrain on offer year around.

Despite cold temperatures and windy conditions on race day, the event was a success. The inaugural El Paso Sun City Crit had over 300 competitors between both amateur and professional categories, including the citizen relay and kids races. The Sun City Crit is yet another addition to the growing attractions in professional sports downtown. The sponsorship is set through 2024 for the race, with planned expansion working with our sister city of Juarez, Mexico for 2020.

Alrededor de 120 proveedores ofrecieron productos y servicios especializados en diseño de interiores, ferreteras, alarmas, iluminación inteligente, entre otros, con una orientación al equipamiento para ahorro de energía y aislamiento.
