n October 22, with the presence of the Director General of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Diego Prieto Hernández, the Regional Museum of Ojinaga was inaugurated. This space will help to detonate binational tourism, as it claims the most valuable historical, cultural, and natural heritage of the municipalities of Ojinaga, Coyame, and Manuel Benavides, which make up the so-called desert region in the state of Chihuahua.

l pasado 22 de octubre, con la presencia del Director General del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), Diego Prieto Hernández, fue inaugurado el Museo Regional de Ojinaga. Este espacio ayudará a detonar el turismo binacional, pues reivindica lo más valioso del patrimonio histórico, cultural y natural de los municipios de Ojinaga, Coyame y Manuel Benavides, que integran la llamada región del desierto en el estado de Chihuahua.

Five rooms show permanent exhibitions where contents are approached in a very attractive way. In the first one, part of the region’s paleontological and archaeological wealth is exhibited; the second one presents its flora and fauna. Large format photographs allow us to admire the imposing natural scenery, such as the Santa Elena Canyon. We also have the soundscape, a cabin where the sounds of the desert are heard and if you pay attention, it transports you there.

Cinco salas muestran exposiciones permanentes donde se abordan de manera muy atractiva los contenidos. En la primera de ellas se exhibe parte de la riqueza paleontológica y arqueológica de la región; la segunda presenta su flora y fauna.

he sociologist, film analyst, and researcher is self-defined as a small boat in the open sea that skirts high crests of waves to reach small islands where they nest secrets about our troubled and unknown past.

As a child, he turned to art when he listened to a Bach record out of curiosity and became fascinated by a book by Georges Braque from his older brother. This passion intensified when he was a teenager, listening to the musical version of Carl Orff of the Carmina Burana.

In 2000, thanks to his taste and passion for cinema, he started a research project where he investigated how art had begun on the border between Ciudad Juarez and El Paso. This is how Berumen, Maribel Limongi, and Willivaldo Delgadillo published the book La mirada desenterrada: Juárez y El Paso vistos por el cine (unearthed look: Juárez and El Paso as seen by the cinema) (18961916). At that time, Miguel Ángel founded the Film Association of Ciudad Juárez and the company Cuadro Por Cuadro, dedicated to photographic research and book publishing.

l sociólogo, analista de cine e investigador se define como una pequeña embarcación en mar abierto que sortea altas crestas de olas para llegar hasta pequeñas islas donde anidan secretos sobre nuestro agitado y desconocido pasado.

Desde niño se inclinó por el arte cuando escuchó por curiosidad un disco de Bach y se fascinó ante un libro de Georges Braque de su hermano mayor. La pasión arreció cuando era adolescente, al escuchar la versión musicalizada de Carl Orff de los Carmina Burana.

En el año 2000, gracias a su gusto y pasión por el cine, inició un proyecto de investigación donde indagó cómo había empezado ese arte en la frontera entre Ciudad Juárez y El Paso. Así fue como Berumen, Maribel Limongi y Willivaldo Delgadillo publicaron el libro La mirada desenterrada: Juárez y El Paso vistos por el cine (1896-1916). En ese tiempo, Miguel Ángel fundó la Asociación Fílmica de Ciudad Juárez y la compañía Cuadro Por Cuadro, dedicada a la investigación fotográfica y a la edición de libros.

Recently, Miguel Ángel, who lives in the state of Querétaro, visited the border to participate in the museographic renovation of the El Chamizal Museum with the script of a new room that strives to remind visitors why we should feel proud of one of the greatest triumphs of Mexican diplomacy.

One of the greatest satisfactions of his professional life, besides seeing his books published, was the experience of directing the National Museum of the Revolution (MNR) in Mexico City.

Always restless and creative, Miguel Ángel has several projects, such as the elaboration of a museological and museographic script for a site for the exhibition of works. In addition, he plans to continue trying to create a center for photography in Ciudad Juarez. As if that was not enough, he is about to finish a book about Emiliano Zapata, the product of the most extensive and profound research he has ever done.

Recientemente, Miguel Ángel, quien radica en el estado de Querétaro, estuvo de visita en la frontera para participar en la renovación museográfica del Museo de El Chamizal con el guion de una nueva sala que se empeña en recordar a los visitantes por qué debemos sentirnos orgullosos de uno de los mayores triunfos de la diplomacia mexicana.

Una de las grandes satisfacciones de su vida profesional, además de ver sus libros publicados, fue la experiencia de dirigir el Museo Nacional de la Revolución (MNR) en la Ciudad de México.

Siempre inquieto y creativo, Miguel Ángel tiene varios proyectos, como la elaboración de un guion museológico y museográfico para un sitio de exhibición de obras. Además, piensa seguir intentando que exista en Ciudad Juárez un centro para la fotografía. Por si fuera poco, está a punto de terminar un libro sobre Emiliano Zapata, producto de la investigación más extensa y profunda que ha realizado.

he Guadalupe Mission is the oldest temple in Ciudad Juarez. It was founded on December 8, 1658, and it’s consecrated by Fray Garcia de San Francisco, on April 2, 1662. As a faithful witness of major events during the war between Mexico and the United States, it functioned as a hospital and a shelter to heal the wounded, among other acts of transcendence.

a Misión de Guadalupe es el templo más antiguo de Ciudad Juárez. Fue fundada el 8 de diciembre de 1658 y consagrada por fray García de San Francisco el 2 de abril de 1662. Testigo fiel de grandes acontecimientos durante la guerra entre México y Estados Unidos, funcionó como hospital y guarida para curar heridos, entre otros hechos de trascendencia.

This 2018 turned 350 years and, to commemorate them, the Pro-Celebration Committee established for the first time a program to learn more about the history of this building and invite the border community to live their Catholic faith in a happy atmosphere.

Exposiciones fotográficas, mesas redondas, foros, recitales y una representación teatral de la Dedicación al templo fueron parte de las actividades; además, se organizaron visitas a distintas misiones situadas en la región y hubo una ceremonia de agradecimiento a los franciscanos, donde se hizo entrega de un manuscrito histórico que había permanecido durante 108 años en la biblioteca de la ciudad de El Paso, Texas.

La reconocida artista vive con el objetivo de ayudar a otros a desarrollar su voz.

onsidered one of the international trainers of Opera singers, as well as being a pianist, orchestra director, and vocal coach, Teresa Rodríguez García states that Mexico has made significant progress in the field thanks to the great artistic potential of young people.

During a visit to the Juarez-El Paso border, the artist reported that her first piano studies were conducted at the National Conservatory of Music and the School of Life and Movement.

Later she moved to France to continue studies of orchestra ensembling at the Normal School of Music in Paris, where she set her goals of becoming an instructor for the new generations of tenors.

In her opinion, discipline and respect for music are key factors for success. She has transmitted these values ​​to great artists of the genre such as Rolando Villazón, Belem Rodríguez, Fernando de la Mora, Arturo Chacón, Alfredo Portilla, and Irasema Terrazas, among others.

Formas de solicitar asilo a Estados Unidos E

n la edición pasada comentamos acerca de lo que una buena economía aporta al mundo de la ley de inmigración. Este mes, a pesar de nuestros mejores esfuerzos, no podemos ser tan positivos.

Aunque usted está leyendo este artículo durante la temporada navideña, lo escribimos menos de 24 horas después de que el gobierno de los Estados Unidos usara gas lacrimógeno para evitar que los solicitantes de asilo de América Central se acercaran al puerto de entrada. Por lo tanto, ofrecemos una disculpa de antemano al tocar este delicado tema, pero es necesario hablar acerca de lo que es un asilo político.

Como se recordará, nuestra región fronteriza vivió una situación similar hace apenas cinco años, cuando cientos de juarenses solicitaron asilo político en El Paso debido a la violencia suscitada en la zona (esperemos no volver a vivirla), pero que, con los eventos suscitados en Tijuana en el fin de semana de Acción de Gracias, nos sentimos obligados a discutir el asilo desde la perspectiva de un fronterizo porque la manera de solicitarlo puede ser muy diferente para usted, nuestro lector, que para quienes observa en televisión.

Las personas tienen dos formas de solicitar asilo. Una de ellas es el Asilo Afirmativo y otra el Defensivo, ya sea por llamadas afirmativas y defensivas, pero para explicarlo mejor en este artículo, las diferenciaré como solicitar desde la frontera en lugar de solicitar desde adentro de los Estados Unidos.

Durante la presidencia de Trump, casi todos los solicitantes de Asilo Defensivo en la frontera pueden contar con ser detenidos durante semanas o meses, mientras enfrentan bajas posibilidades de que se les otorgue. Esto ocurre incluso para quienes tienen hijos que son ciudadanos estadounidenses, poseen una visa y tienen el derecho de vivir, trabajar o estudiar en los Estados Unidos. Temporalmente, los solicitantes de asilo en la frontera deben convencer a un oficial de asilo del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS por sus siglas en inglés) y al juez de inmigración del Departamento de Justicia; si cualquiera de los oficiales decide que no califican, el solicitante será deportado a su país de origen.

A la inversa, los solicitantes de Asilo Afirmativo no son detenidos y tienen mayores probabilidades de éxito. Primero tienen una entrevista con un oficial del DHS y si tienen éxito en esta etapa, se les concede la petición. En caso de un fallo, tienen otra oportunidad de presentar su caso, esta vez ante un juez de inmigración del Departamento de Justicia. En otras palabras, mientras que los solicitantes de asilo fronterizo deben convencer a ambos oficiales para ganar su caso, quienes piden asilo dentro de los Estados Unidos ganarán si convencen a cualquiera de los representantes gubernamentales.

Trump ha propuesto recientemente varios cambios a la ley. Algunos son claramente ilegales y otros requieren de la aprobación del gobierno mexicano, que el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador ha prometido no brindar. Pero ninguno de estos cambios se aplica a los mexicanos en la frontera o dentro de los Estados Unidos; más bien están dirigidos a los centroamericanos que han huido de la persecución en sus países de origen y no se aplican a los mexicanos que enfrentan amenazas contra su vida.

ast month I wrote about the good news a good economy brings to the world of immigration law. This month, despite my best efforts, I cannot be so upbeat. Although you are reading this article during the Christmas holiday season, I am writing it less than 24 hours after the US Government used tear gas to prevent Central American asylum seekers from approaching the Port of Entry to request asylum. So, I apologize in advance for my somber tone and grave subject matter, but we need to talk about asylum.

Tragically, our own border region is only five short years removed from when many hundreds of Juarenses had to request asylum in El Paso.

Hopefully we never live through another chapter of history like that one, but with the events of Tijuana this Thanksgiving weekend, I feel obligated to discuss asylum from a fronterizo’s perspective. That is to say, I’m going to discuss how applying for asylum would likely be very different for you, our reader, than for those you see on TV. People have two ways of applying for asylum, called affirmative and defensive, but for purposes of this article, I will call them applying at the border versus applying from inside the U.S. During the Trump presidency, nearly all applicants for asylum at the border can count on being detained and suffering for weeks or months in detention while facing very tough odds of ever being granted asylum. This is true even if you have US citizen children, possess a visa, or even have the right to live, work, or study in the US temporarily.

Asylum seekers at the border must convince two separate officers that they qualify (a DHS asylum officer and a DOJ immigration judge). If either officer decides they don’t qualify, the border asylum seeker will be deported to his home country.

Conversely, affirmative asylum seekers inside the US are not detained, and have much higher probabilities of success on their cases. They first have an interview with a DHS asylum officer, and if they are successful at this stage, they are granted asylum. If they are unsuccessful at this stage, they have another opportunity to present their case, this time before a DOJ immigration judge. In other words, while border asylum seekers must convince both officers in order to win their case, asylum seekers inside the US will win if they convince either of the two officers.

Trump has proposed several changes to asylum law recently, including some that are plainly illegal and others that require the agreement of the Mexican government, which AMLO has promised not to give. But none of these changes apply to Mexicans who apply at the border or inside the US. Rather, they are directed at Central Americans who have fled persecution back in their home countries, and do not apply to Mexicans who are facing immediate threats to their lives.

My prayer for you this holiday season is that this article has helped alleviate any fears you may have from seeing the recent events in Tijuana and will put your mind at ease that, while tragic, Mexican asylum seekers are processed differently under current and proposed policy than those unfortunate Central Americans in Tijuana. If, however, this article should ever take on more personal meaning for you, because you someday fear persecution and need protection in the US, I pray you contact me or another capable asylum attorney immediately about how best, and where best, to request asylum.

llegorical cars, floats, mojigangas, marionettes, and giant catrinas evoke, in a kilometer of length, the diverse migratory stages of the City of Mexico, because in this occasion the parade was dedicated to “the migrants who have lost their lives in their transit towards other lands.”

The festivity in which Mexicans receive our ancestors, who come back from the beyond to visit us, try their favorite dishes, drink a tequila and, taking advantage of it, smoke a cigar, went beyond the domestic sphere to take full ownership of the public space: the parade counted with about 2 million attendees eager to participate in this event framed by the Day of the Dead.

The parade was divided into two parts, each with three segments. In the first, the subdivisions were ‘The Great Tenochtilan’, ‘Those who came to stay’, and ‘The refuge city’, covering the first

migration from Aztlán in search of a sign: the eagle standing in a cactus devouring a snake; then, those who came to settle here from the Viceroyalty and, later, those who came to take refuge in Mexico City during the twentieth century, are remembered, due to the war that ravaged their countries of origin.

In the second part, the first theme was the pre-Hispanic legacy as our main root; the second segment was dedicated to the tradition of the party, where the skulls dance and happiness reigns; in the end, the theme was technology and the future, where the progress of the country is celebrated from the Mexican Revolution.

Creativity, the union of families and friends were present in this great celebration, where death flirts with the living, seduces us to subjugate us and achieves it, because nothing better than to die of joy, proud to be Mexican because we have roots for honor our past and wings to go back to the future.

reo que todos somos peregrinos de dos caminos simultáneos: el externo o corporal y el interno o del alma, aunque debemos estar conscientes de atenderlos con igual cuidado, ya que frecuentemente confundimos estar ocupados con estar vivos. El ritmo de la vida moderna nos desvía de nuestro ideal y objetivo: sentir - vivir.

Las expectativas del caminante son buscar la fe o ir tras el alivio del sufrimiento y al llegar al final del camino se siente acogido por apóstoles y ángeles, quienes lo reciben igual que como será admitido en el paraíso en el gran día.

Emprender una peregrinación a un lugar sagrado es hacer un paréntesis en nuestra vida, un espacio para reflexionar acerca de la razón de nuestro ser. La paz y la tranquilidad del camino nos animan a hacernos la pregunta de todos los tiempos: “¿Quién soy?” y nos proporciona además el tiempo y el espacio mental para integrar la respuesta.

Desde mediados del siglo pasado, el camino de Santiago a Compostela se ha convertido en un tema de moda. Y es que, para el creyente, terminar la peregrinación a la tumba del apóstol en Galicia equivale simbólicamente a alcanzar las puertas del Cielo y a encontrar material para el más hermoso de sus sueños.

Además de nosotros, cerca de 500 caminantes emprendieron el recorrido. Me llenó de paz escuchar música y ver a los jóvenes bailar y cantar imitando a Santiago Apóstol, en esa larga travesía concebida hace dos siglos. Según la tradición, el primer peregrino que llega a la cumbre del Monte del Gozo lanza su sombrero al aire para avisar a sus compañeros que están a punto de llegar a Compostela.

Fue una semana de mucho cansancio que culminó con gran plenitud: nos sentimos triunfantes cuando entramos en la catedral de Santiago de Compostela, donde caímos rendidos. Con el gozo a flor de piel, abrazamos la estatua plateada, oramos y contemplamos la imagen del santo. Sobre todo, dimos gracias por la enorme satisfacción de haber terminado el viaje y desde ese día nos volvimos devotos de

Santiago, que es muy milagroso.

Después de concluir la peregrinación y descansar, nos fuimos a conocer las ciudades de Muxía y Finisterre, situadas en un área hermosa y productiva conocida como “el fin del mundo” o “el lugar de los muertos”, donde disfrutamos un recorrido cultural y gastronómico. ¡Qué mejillones y qué postre de limón! ¡El lenguado con berenjenas y aceite de oliva es muy sabroso!

Creo que Galicia es la parte más hermosa de España y de toda Europa, pero recorrer el Camino de Santiago fue una aventura inolvidable que me invitó a mirar el cielo, como si ese llamado para ir a Galicia y al fin de la Tierra tuviera una sola naturaleza: la divina.

El proyecto, explica Salvador Perches, presidente del Corporativo, se cristalizó a raíz de una visita efectuada al estado de Puebla, donde opera el primer cementerio de características similares. “Recibí información sobre su operación, caminé y me impactó porque es un área muy bonita en las afueras de la ciudad, donde no se siente el ambiente de un panteón”, refirió.

Este proyecto permitirá a las familias inhumar cenizas debajo y alrededor de un árbol, una piedra o esparcirlas en agua, al ser introducidas en urnas y ataúdes biodegradables que con el tiempo se integran a la naturaleza al mezclarse con material como granito, laja, etcétera, y formarán parte de los 10 mil nichos de este parque ecológico.

o educate and show the art, the Perches Thematic Funeral Museum was inaugurated in the west of the city of El Paso. With an artistic and educational touch, Grupo Perches (GP) exhibits art during the inauguration of its funerary museum, located at 6111 Desert Blvd., in the west of the city.

A large funeral carriage, coffins, and a historical section with photographs of Pope Francis on his visit to Ciudad Juarez and ‘El Divo’ from Juarez, Juan Gabriel, are shown to the visitor. The exhibit also offers an area dedicated to the Egyptians where the embalming and conservation of bodies in the world is observed as well as modern equipment applied during the American Civil War. The exhibition contemplates what is new in the funeral industry, such as biodegradable urns and coffins, designs of ashes in diamonds and coral to be integrated into a reef, an exclusive service in Mexico by Grupo Perches.

“The idea was born after a visit to the Funeral Museum in Houston, Texas, and when I saw that it kept a great variety of old objects related to the business, I decided to have one of my own,” said Salvador Perches, owner of the Group, who, during the opening party, was recognized by the Chamber of Commerce of El Paso for its business leadership.

As an attraction of the event, the artist Hugo Cortes, paid tribute to the late singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel.

eptember 13, 1847, is a historical date for Mexico; it is about the struggle in which six brave cadets lost their lives to defend their homeland during the war against the United States, 171 years ago.

The feat of the so-called ‘Child Heroes’ is remembered annually through ceremonies held in many parts of the country, including Ciudad Juarez, which has a monument in honor of the cadets.

La hazaña de los llamados ‘Niños Héroes’ es recordada anualmente a través de ceremonias realizadas en muchos lugares del país, incluyendo a Ciudad Juárez, que cuenta con un monumento en honor de los cadetes.

Basado en relatos históricos, el escultor José Guadalupe Díaz Nieto buscó plasmar la imagen de los combatientes, apoyado por 50 jóvenes del Pentatlón Militar Universitario, quienes posaron con entusiasmo para el proyecto. El 28 de octubre de 1971 se develó el monumento con los seis personajes ilustres en el icónico parque de El Chamizal, aunque posteriormente fue relocalizado en la plaza ubicada sobre las avenidas Heroico Colegio Militar y Del Charro.

Para Rafael, es un orgullo haber encabezado el proyecto. Su objetivo sigue siendo promover la historia entre la juventud para darle valor a nuestra herencia.

“Ellos son un ejemplo de lealtad a la patria, disciplina y orientación cívica”, dice Rafael Aguilar Castro.

El chihuahuense Rolando Trillo Pando ha cosechado

olando remembers the first competitions side by side with his brothers in his native Delicias. Since then, he has put all his effort into achieving his goals. Two of the most important are to have been coach of the national cycling team for the Olympic Games, in Rio de Janeiro, in 2016, and to occupy, during 2018, the fourth place in track cycling in Los Angeles, USA. The practice of cycling, according to Rolando, improved him as an athlete and gave him the chance to be a coach, a profession he now enjoys because he promotes the talent of new prospects, whom he guides to stand out, as he has done, in great competitions.

This tireless man of the pedal has learned to handle the suffering on the track to get the best results: “The relaxed mind helps me 74

to push myself beyond my own limits�, says Rolando, who proves it with facts, since he has been an athlete of the year, has directed dependencies related to sports and has collaborated as a commentator for print media and radio shows.

A comprehensive preparation based on exercise and nutrition is required to position itself at high levels. Rolando specializes in organizing tournaments not only for high-performance athletes but for those who see this discipline as a recreational hobby that helps maintain good health, as this champion points out, that cycling is a low impact sport, so innocuous that it used to rehabilitate those who practice other disciplines.

Due to the above, Trillo is happy that in Ciudad Juarez this sport has grown a lot and he supports the development of it in the following years.

olando recuerda las primeras competencias al lado de sus hermanos en su natal Delicias. Desde entonces, ha puesto todo su empeño para conseguir sus metas. Dos de las más importantes son haber sido entrenador de la selección nacional de ciclismo para los Juegos Olímpicos de Río de Janeiro en 2016 y ocupar durante 2018 el cuarto lugar mundial en ciclismo de pista en Los Ángeles, USA. La práctica del ciclismo, según dice Rolando, lo mejoró como atleta y le otorgó la posibilidad de ser entrenador, profesión que ahora disfruta porque promueve el talento de nuevos prospectos, a quienes guía para que destaquen, como él ha hecho, en grandes competencias.

Este incansable hombre del pedal ha aprendido a manejar el sufrimiento en la pista para obtener los mejores resultados:

“La mente relajada me ayuda a esforzarme más allá de mis propios límites”, comenta Rolando y lo prueba con hechos, pues ha sido deportista del año, ha dirigido dependencias relacionadas con el deporte y ha colaborado como columnista de prensa escrita y programas de radio.

Una preparación integral basada en ejercicio y alimentación es requisito para posicionarse en altos niveles. Rolando se especializa en organizar torneos no solamente para deportistas de alto rendimiento, sino para quienes ven esta disciplina como un pasatiempo recreativo que ayuda a mantener una buena salud, pues este campeón señala que el ciclismo es un deporte de bajo impacto, tan inocuo que se utiliza para rehabilitar a quienes practican otras disciplinas.

Debido a lo anterior, Trillo se muestra feliz de que en Ciudad Juárez haya crecido mucho y apoya para que se desarrolle más. www.border-heritage.com 77

ith the assistance of more than a hundred people, BorderHeritage Magazine successfully completed its first bazaar called ‘Nutcracker Runway Breakfast’. With great enthusiasm, those present received a welcome cocktail provided by Tropical Smoothie Café and participated in a series of fun contests and raffles.

One of the main attractions was the fashion show carried out by the exclusive Pure Denim, Chico’s, and Black Tie boutiques, where the models wore brands of casual clothes and seasonal evening dresses.

To entertain the occasion, there was the presence of Alberto ‘El Pelón’ Orozco and the renowned news host Rosana Díaz, as well as the dancers of Shundo Ballroom Dance Studio. In addition, there were exercise routines in charge of Impulse Gym. The “Nutcracker Runway Breakfast”, which objective is to promote local commerce and coexistence on the eve of Christmas, was organized by businesswomen Carmen Becerra, director of BHM, and Febe Leyva, of SIP & SHOP EP. During the event the attendees had the opportunity to acquire a wide variety of clothing, jewelry, accessories and Christmas items, among other quality services offered by invited sponsors.

The Bazaar was successfully held in the Coronado Country Club Event Room in El Paso, Texas.

Con gran entusiasmo, los presentes recibieron un coctel de bienvenida proporcionado por Tropical Smoothie Café y participaron en una serie de divertidos concursos y rifas.

Uno de los atractivos principales fue el desfile de modas llevado a cabo por las exclusivas boutiques Pure Denim, Chico’s y Black Tie, donde las modelos lucieron marcas de ropa casual y vestidos de noche de temporada.

Para amenizar la ocasión, se contó con la presencia de Alberto ‘el Pelón’ Orozco y la reconocida conductora de noticias Rosana Díaz, así como de los bailarines de Shundo Ballroom Dance Studio. Además, hubo rutinas de ejercicio a cargo de Impulse Gym.
