Along

the Camino Real

Seventh Part

I

n the last issue, Governor Don Juan de Oñate and his expedition had lost many carts due to the thick mud that destroyed their wheels. The carts were left behind as they drove the expedition away from the river. Thirst drove them back to the river. They camped acrossfrom a pueblo called Qualacu.

They set up tents toward the bank of the river and remained there for a month to prove to the natives that they came in peace.

Governor Juan de Oñate had gone ahead of the cart train with other expedition members to find the easiest route northward.

The rest of the people in the cart train, left by the bank of the river, were in trouble. Two of the men had strayed from the group; they were later found dead. Dissention by those in charge and lack of water forced the Governor to return to the cart train with provisions and renewed hope on June 12.

On June 14, they traveled 3 leagues and stopped for the night in open ground across from Teypana, a pueblo they called Socorro, because they were given much maize.

n la última edición, el gobernador don Juan de Oñate y su expedición habían perdido varias carretas debido al lodo que dañó las ruedas. Decidieron dejar las carretas dañadas y el río para subir al desierto a tierras que pudieran soportar el peso, pero la sed los forzó a regresar a la ribera, donde armaron su campamento frente al pueblo denominado Qualacu.

Ahí permanecieron durante un mes para mostrarles a los nativos que venían en paz.

Don Juan de Oñate se adelantó a la fila de carretas con otros miembros de la expedición para buscar la ruta más fácil hacia el norte. Quienes se quedaron empezaron a tener problemas y discusiones; incluso, dos hombres se desviaron del grupo y después los encontraron muertos. Los desacuerdos de los encargados y la escasez de agua forzaron el regreso del gobernador al campamento, quien llegó con provisiones y esperanzas renovadas el 12 de junio de 1598.

The next day, they traveled a distance of four leagues and stopped at a little pueblo they called Nueva Sevilla. It was the first pueblo that they camped at because they could use the deserted houses as protection, in case the natives should decide to attack.

Here they remained until June 21 when Villagrán showed up with more maize. They traveled another four leagues to a deserted pueblo they called San Juan Bautista, also deserted. Here they found more maize and a room full of painted idols that numbered about 60. They remainedhere. On the feast day of San Juan Bautista, they were visited by many natives from different places.

One was named Don Lope sent by Tomás and Cristóbal, two natives that had remained there since the time of Castaño.

On the 25 th , they set out in search of Puaray, where Fray Agustin and Fray Francisco had been killed years earlier. They had been the first discoverers and fathers of Nuevo Mexico.

The expedition walked by farms, pueblos and planted fields on both banks of the river. Most of them were abandoned. Two days later they reached Puaray. That night, Governor Oñate and the maese de campo headed out to Santo Domingo to find Tomás and Cristóbal.

They were found before arriving in Santo Domingo and brought back to Puaray. On June 30, they headed to San Felipe and Santo Domingo which were four leagues apart. This area was chosen as a site for a convent devoted to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

Salieron el siguiente día y viajaron cuatro leguas hasta llegar a un pueblito al que denominaron Nueva Sevilla.

Como estaba abandonado, decidieron quedarse ahí para usar las casitas como protección en caso de que los nativos los atacaran y permanecieron en el lugar hasta el 21 de junio, cuando Villagrán llegó con más maíz. Viajaron cuatro leguas hacia otro pueblo abandonado, al cual llamaron San Juan Bautista, donde encontraron maíz y un cuarto con cerca de 60 ídolos pintados.

El día del santo mencionado, los expedicionarios fueron visitados por nativos de diferentes pueblos; uno de ellos era don Lope, quien había sido enviado por Tomás y Cristóbal, dos nativos que habían permanecido ahí desde la visita de Castaño.

El 25 de junio salieron a buscar el pueblo de Puaray, donde los nativos habían matado, hacía varios años, a fray Agustín y fray Francisco, quienes fueron los primeros españoles en llegar a la región de Nuevo México.

La expedición de don Juan caminó por pueblos, granjas y sembradíos, muchos de ellos abandonados; llegó a Puaray después de dos días. Esa noche, el gobernador Oñate y el sargento mayor de campo salieron hacia Santo Domingo en busca de Tomás y Cristóbal. Los encontraron antes de llegar a Santo Domingo y se regresaron con ellos a Puaray.

El 30 de junio la expedición salió hacia San Felipe y Santo Domingo, que estaban a 4 leguas de distancia. Se eligió este sitio para edificar el nuevo convento de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

he collection was made during a so-called ‘Champagne Brunch’, held at the residence of Arreola, president of the Southwest University, where the women wore black and white outfits.

The goal of this event is to support and educate dozens of low-income children, those who suffer from the disease, about how they should take care of themselves to have a good quality of life and cope with their illness in the best possible way. With the resources collected, a group of children selected by the EPDA will be sent to a summer camp, where they will exchange useful experiences.

a colecta se realizó durante un convivio denominado ‘Champagne brunch’, celebrado en la residencia de la anfitriona, presidenta de Southwest University, donde las mujeres vistieron atuendos en blanco y negro.

El objetivo es apoyar y educar a decenas de niños de bajos recursos, quienes padecen la enfermedad, en cómo deben cuidarse para tener una buena calidad de vida y sobrellevar su padecimiento de la mejor manera posible. Con los recursos recaudados se enviará a un grupo de niños seleccionados por la EPDA a un campamento de verano, donde intercambiarán experiencias útiles.

Around 150 women shared bread and salt. In addition, several of them participated in a glamorous fashion show organized by Laura Rayborn, which managed to unleash the spirits of the attendees gathered on an outdoor stage.

The sponsors are representatives of commercial houses such as Macy’s, Deutsch and Deutsch, and Channel, who offered makeup services, perfumery, and clothing sales by Ella Blue. To close the event, a raffle of a Rolex watch was made, among other gifts.

“W

e are passionate about adventure and we love doing things together. That was how the idea of planning a different trip was born. Although we live in the United States, as Mexicans, we like to explore our country and know its culture so we never forget about our roots,” say, enthused, Alberto and Adriana Orozco, a couple who lives in El Paso, Texas. In this space, we share part of their experiences and some impressive images.

We have known several Aztec cities, all with their charm, but this time the destination had an incredible surprise because knowing the wonderful state of Chiapas completely exceeded our expectations.

We flew from Ciudad Juárez to Tuxtla Gutiérrez, got off the plane and the impression with the people was nice. During the trip to San Cristobal de las Casas, the taxi driver told us some history of the area and made some recommendations for activities. It was night, so we could not appreciate the landscape clearly; however, it was interesting to hear about the customs and the indigenous groups, especially the Chamulas.

We rested our first night and at dawn, we were surprised to see a picturesque and beautiful place through the window of our hotel.

We fell in love with the town from the beginning. Churches, corridors full of restaurants, craft shops, and clothing, we found it all very peculiar.

By day, it is the route on foot; at night, the party with varied music, including Mariachi, and delicious food. There we met foreigners from various parts of the world with whom we exchanged talks about our respective regions - of course, accompanied by a rich tequila. This was the beginning of our tour.

We realized that we did not know more beautiful scenarios than those of Chiapas: during our walk through the Sumidero Canyon, we thought that no photo is capable of doing it justice: It is really impressive because there is a very special vibe when walking around the Grijalva river. Two hours were not enough to admire the magic produced by the water between the rocks, as well as the local flora and fauna in its maximum splendor: we were surrounded by crocodiles and spider monkeys.

The next day, the tour took us to Chapa de Corzo, its plaza, and the handicraft market where we observed people working with wood.

The must-have photo was in La Pochota, a leafy tree 25 meters high and 500 years old, a landmark of the city. The popular belief is that he is hunted, but the truth is that he has witnessed the history of Mexico.

Our third visit was to the waterfalls of Misol-Ha and Aguazul, on the heights of the rainforest. The second ones changed our definition of a waterfall because the landscape looks like a postcard where the rocks function as natural stone stairs where small pools are formed.

The breeze is pleasant and the dense vegetation transmits tranquility. Impossible to stop admiring the green-blue color of the water.

Without a doubt, a spectacular site.

We also visit the “Velo de Novia” (Bride’s Veil), a wellspring to experience the unthinkable, surrounded by exclusive resorts, zip lines, and other attractions. We continue to the Lagunas de Montebello, perhaps the most beautiful spot of our trip because the view surpassed our understanding.

Finally, we could not miss the archaeological zone of Palenque, embraced by the jungle, where there are still about 17 tombs to explore. The route was very extensive, but it was worth it, because it was useful to know how some communities live, most of them surrounded by fauna and much natural richness. They also have large sugar and coffee plantations. We perceive that people are very united and protective, as well as working on their fabrics and crafts.

Quick tip: It is important to carry cash in order to buy your products.

In the end, we considered that it was the best choice: Chiapas marked our hearts.

omos unos apasionados por la aventura y amamos hacer cosas juntos. Fue así como nació la idea de planear un viaje diferente. Aunque vivimos en Estados Unidos, como mexicanos nos gusta explorar nuestro país y conocer su cultura para no olvidar nuestras raíces”, expresaron entusiastas Alberto y Adriana Orozco, una pareja que reside en El Paso, Texas. En este espacio nos comparten una parte de su experiencia y algunas imágenes impresionantes.

Hemos conocido varias ciudades aztecas, todas con su encanto, pero en esta ocasión el destino nos tuvo una sorpresa increíble, pues conocer el maravilloso estado de Chiapas superó totalmente nuestras expectativas.

Volamos de Ciudad Juárez a Tuxtla Gutiérrez, bajamos del avión y la impresión con la gente fue agradable. Durante el trayecto a San Cristóbal de las Casas, el taxista nos relató algo de historia de la zona y nos hizo algunas recomendaciones de actividades. Era de noche, por lo que no pudimos apreciar claramente el paisaje; sin embargo, fue interesante escuchar acerca de las costumbres y los grupos indígenas, sobre todo de los chamulas.

Descansamos nuestra primera noche y al amanecer nos sorprendió ver un lugar pintoresco y hermoso a través de la ventana de nuestro hotel. El pueblo nos enamoró desde el principio. Iglesias, corredores llenos de restaurantes, tiendas de artesanía y ropa, todo nos pareció muy peculiar.

De día, es el recorrido a pie; de noche, la fiesta con música variada, incluyendo mariachi, y deliciosa comida. Ahí conocimos extranjeros de varias partes del mundo con quienes intercambiamos pláticas sobre nuestras respectivas regiones -por supuesto, acompañados de un rico tequila. Así comenzamos nuestro tour.

Constatamos que no conocíamos escenarios más bellos que los de Chiapas: durante nuestro paseo por el Cañón del Sumidero, pensamos que ninguna foto es capaz de hacerle justicia: es realmente impresionante, pues hay vibra muy especial al pasear por las inmediaciones del río Grijalva. Dos horas no eran suficientes para admirar la magia que produce el agua entre las rocas, así como flora y fauna en su máximo esplendor: estábamos rodeados de cocodrilos y monos araña.

Al siguiente día, el recorrido nos llevó a Chiapa de Corzo, a su plaza y al mercado de artesanías donde observamos gente trabajando la madera. La foto obligada fue en La Pochota, un frondoso árbol de 25 metros de altura y 500 años de antigüedad, símbolo para la ciudad.

La creencia popular es que está encantado, pero lo cierto es que ha sido testigo de la historia de México.

Nuestra tercera visita fue a las cascadas de Misol-Ha y Aguazul, en las alturas de la selva tropical. Las segundas cambiaron nuestra definición de caída de agua, pues el paisaje parece una postal donde las rocas funcionan como escalones donde se forman pequeñas albercas o pozas. La brisa es agradable y la tupida vegetación transmite tranquilidad. Imposible dejar de admirar el color azul verde del agua; sin duda, un sitio espectacular.

También visitamos el “Velo de Novia”, un manantial para experimentar lo impensable, rodeado de complejos exclusivos, tirolesas y otros atractivos; continuamos hacia las Lagunas de Montebello, quizá lo más hermoso de nuestro viaje, pues la vista sobrepasó nuestro entendimiento.

Por último, no podíamos dejar de conocer la zona arqueológica de Palenque, abrazada por la selva, donde aún existen cerca de 17 tumbas por explorar. La ruta fue muy extensa, pero valió la pena, pues sirvió para conocer cómo viven algunas comunidades, la mayoría rodeadas fauna y muchas riquezas naturales.

Cuentan también con grandes sembradíos de azúcar y café. Percibimos que la gente es muy unida y se protege, además de trabajar en sus telas y artesanías. Es importante llevar dinero en efectivo para poder comprar sus productos.

Al final, consideramos que fue la mejor elección: Chiapas nos marcó el corazón.

is encounter with music happened gradually, without influences or idols. At age 11, in front of a piano, he explored and combined his first musical notes, a skill that became a vocation.

The opportunity to invent melodies that carry a message and transmit a feeling governs the career of Matías Carbajal, a Mexican musician, and composer who has made his way with his own style.

His first rehearsals were with his friends from high school, in his native Mexico City, where they played covers. Then came the formal performings: “When you get on a stage, fear invades you, but that’s good because you learn to master your domains and take advantage of them.”

Thus, more than 20 years have passed on this musical path, with clear aspirations and the promise of enjoying each step without surrendering.

For Matías, the support of his father, Enrique Carbajal, aka Sebastian, renowned Chihuahuan sculptor, is invaluable.

Sebastian represents a very positive influence and is a reference of example, fight and tenacity for his son, because far from being a shadow, it means a bond that has impelled the musician to believe in his dreams and pursue them.

The Juarez-El Paso border was the first international experience with his group ‘Ensamble’, with whom he has added pleasant experiences during the last five years. The musician says smiling: “This community has adopted me with great affection. For me it is a triumph and a joy to come here, maybe it also calls me because it is the origin of my father and, therefore, mine.”

Up to this day, his talent has led him to consolidate a language in two important aspects: instrumental jazz music and his career as a singer-songwriter. This ‘musical polyglot’ is about to debut with his show called ‘Entre mundos’ in the ‘Lunario’, in Mexico City. There he will offer the coincidences he has developed in his jazz-pop stage, with several record materials, one of them called ‘Daydream’, and now with ‘Necio Amor’ as a soloist.

Always restless in his creative work, Matías sees music as a whole. “I am someone without limits or prejudices, nor established rules, since I allow myself to mix elements, a quality that nourishes me and gives me freedom”.

u encuentro con la música sucedió de manera gradual, sin influencias ni ídolos. A los 11 años, frente a un piano, exploró y combinó sus primeras notas musicales, destreza que se convirtió en vocación.

La oportunidad de inventar melodías que lleven un mensaje y transmitan un sentimiento rige la carrera de Matías Carbajal, músico y compositor mexicano que se ha abierto paso con estilo propio.

Sus primeros ensayos los hizo con sus amigos de la preparatoria, en su natal Ciudad de México, donde tocaban covers.

Después llegaron las presentaciones formales: “Cuando te subes a un escenario, el miedo te invade, pero eso es bueno porque aprendes a dominarlo y sacarle provecho”.

Así, han transcurrido más de 20 años en el camino de la música, con aspiraciones claras y la promesa de disfrutar cada escalón sin rendirse.

Para Matías, el apoyo de su padre, reconocido escultor chihuahuense, es invaluable. Sebastian representa una influencia muy positiva y es referente de ejemplo, lucha y tesón para su hijo, pues lejos de ser una sombra, significa un lazo que ha impulsado al músico a creer en sus sueños y perseguirlos.

La frontera Juárez-El Paso fue la primera experiencia internacional con su grupo ‘Ensamble’, con quien ha sumado gratas experiencias durante los últimos cinco años. El músico afirma sonriendo: “Esta comunidad me ha adoptado con mucho cariño. Para mí es un triunfo y un goce venir aquí, quizá también me llama porque es el origen de mi papá y, por lo tanto, el mío”.

Hasta hoy, su talento lo ha llevado a consolidar un lenguaje en dos aspectos importantes: la música instrumental de jazz y su carrera como cantautor. Este ‘políglota musical’ está próximo a debutar con su espectáculo denominado ‘Entre mundos’ en el ‘Lunario’ en la Ciudad de México, donde ofrecerá las coincidencias que ha desarrollado en su etapa jazz-pop, con varios materiales discográficos, uno de ellos llamado ‘Daydream’, y ahora con ‘Necio Amor’ como solista.

Siempre inquieto en su quehacer creativo, Matías ve la música como un todo. “Soy alguien sin límites ni prejuicios, ni reglas establecidas, ya que me permito mezclar elementos, cualidad que me nutre y me da libertad”.

El chihuahuense por herencia y convicción se presentó en junio con el grupo ‘Ensamble’ para deleitar a los juarenses.

Color, art, fun, and a lot of music powered the ‘Neon Desert Music Festival ’ (NDMF) in its 2018 edition, in the city of El Paso, Texas.

rom the entrance, we could see the impeccable organization to control thousands of attendees, mostly young groupies, willing to spend memorable moments. Some of them, with ver y original outfits, toured the facilities and took the opportunity to take countless photographs, without missing the usual ‘ selfies ’, in front of the huge letters with the name of the festival.

For the enjoyment of all, three impressive stages were placed, where the bands and groups of different genres did their thing, in a long day of continuous rhythm that included the ‘ Memorial Day Weekend ’.

esde la entrada pudimos apreciar la impecable organización para recibir a miles de asistentes, en su mayoría jóvenes, dispuestos a disfrutar la música. Café Tacvba, Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, Bomba Estéreo and the electronic music of Martin Garrix and Dillon Francis, among many well-known bands, managed to turn this celebration into a real euphoria for the border-people, who raised dust with their jumps and original dances, accompassed by the warm desert.

A skateboarding ramp and a wrestling ring, as well as other spaces for entertainment, were set in place to release the energy of young people. Similarly, local music bands occupied a place in this important party. The food court, where the restaurants offered a varied menu, was a ‘ must have’ experience.

No doubt, ever y year the quality of the NDMF shows that it is one of the best events on the border, designed to leave a mark and create a great experience for those who love modern music.

Además, varios espacios de entretenimiento, como la pista de ‘ skateboarding ’ y un ring de lucha libre, fueron habilitados para liberar la energía de los jóvenes. No faltó la zona de comida donde los restaurantes ofrecieron un variado menú, adecuado para el gusto de todos.

The authorities intend to turn this national fair into an event similar to the one held in Guadalajara city, Mexico, where they celebrate the International Book Fair. In that respect, the new headquarters for this local event was held in an interactive museum.
