Alongthe Camino Real Fifth Part

I

E

n the last issue, Governor Don Juan de Oñate started his expedition northward on January 29, 1598, from what is now Santa Barbara, Chihuahua to what is now San Elizario, Texas.

Governor Oñate’s chronologist and scribe, Don Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá, logged the journey. They arrived in the San Elizario area where they met the Rio Bravo or Rio del Norte, which is now known as the Rio Grande, on April 30, 1598.

Here, Governor Oñate took possession of all the kingdoms and provinces of New Mexico in the name of God and King Philip, “for their preservation and ours”, meaning the natives.

They celebrated with a mass and a play written by Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá.

n la última edición, el gobernador don Juan de Oñate había comenzado el viaje con su expedición el 29 de enero de 1598, desde donde hoy se conoce como SantaBárbara, Chihuahua, a lo que ahora es San Elizario, Texas. Su cronista, don GasparPérez de Villagrá, anotó la jornada. La expedición llegó al área de San Elizario donde se encontraron frente al Río Bravo o Río del Norte, conocido actualmente como Río Grande, el 30 de abril de 1598. Aquí, el Gobernador Oñate tomó posesión de los reinos y las provincias de Nuevo México en el nombre de Dios y del rey Felipe, “para la preservación de ellos y la nuestra”, queriendo decir la de los nativos. Celebraroncon una misa y una comedia escrita por don Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá.

On May 1, 1598, the 3-mile by 3-mile expedition moved 2 leagues up the river and on May 2, they traveled another league and a half. Then, on May 3rd, after traveling 2 more leagues, the first natives were found and brought to the camp by the sargento mayor. The natives were clothed and then sent to tell their friends and bring them to the camp. Eight natives went to meet the expedition. They called the natives ‘arreadores’ because to say ‘yes’, they would roll their tongues against their palates as the Spanish did when they drive livestock, as in, the word ‘arre’.

En el primero de mayo de 1598 la expedición, que medía 3 millas por 3 millas, caminó 2 leguas al norte siguiendo el rio. El 2 de mayo avanzó otra legua y media. El 3 de mayo, después de viajar 2 leguas más, los primeros nativos fueron traídos al campamento por el sargento mayor. Los vistieron porque no traían ropa y les pidieron que hablaran con sus amigos sobre la expedición y los trajeran al campamento. Ocho nativos fueron a conocer la expedición; a ellos se les llamó “arreadores” porque para decir ‘sí’, marcaban la doble erre como en la palabra ‘arre’.

On May 4th they crossed the river at what they named Los Puertos. Forty of the natives went to the river and helped them cross the sheep across the river. They were described as having long hair cut like Milan caps with headgear designed to hold their hair down and colored with blood or paint. Their first words were “manxo, manxo, micos, micos” which meant ‘peaceful ones’ and ‘friends’. (Please note, that the ‘x’ had an ‘sh’ sound. Manxo would be pronounced, mansho).

El 4 de mayo cruzaron el río y al lugar del cruce le llamaron ‘Los Puertos’. Cuarenta nativos llegaron para ayudarles a cruzar los borregos a través de una ribera a la otra. Villagrá escribió que los nativos traían arcos turcos y que su cabello era largo, con cortes como bonetes de Milán. Usaban sombreros para detener el cabello con color de sangre o pintura roja.

Las primeras palabras fueron ‘manxo, manxo, micos, micos’, que significan ‘pacíficos’ y ‘amigos’ (es importante notar que el sonido de la ‘x’ era /sh/: manxo sería ‘mansho’).

The natives made the sign of the cross by raising their thumbs.

They told Governor Oñate that the settlements were 6-8 days’ distance along the road.

Los nativos hacían la señal de la cruz levantando sus pulgares. Además, le dijeron al gobernador Oñate que sus asentamientos estaban ubicados a 6 y a 8 días de camino. Para agradecer el trabajo de los nativos, los miembros de la expedición les dieron regalos.

The expedition thanked them by giving them gifts.

The expedition’s crossing of the river, or Los Puertos, is marked by a National Park Service’s monument at the old La Hacienda Restaurant next to Hart’s Mill and across from the University of Texas at El Paso, off Paisano. You are welcome to visit it.

Este cruce del río por la expedición en Los Puertos está hoy marcado por el National Park Service con un monumento ubicado junto al viejo restaurante La Hacienda, enseguida de Hart’s Mill y frente a la Universidad de Texas en El Paso, en la calle Paisano. Lo puede visitar si usted lo desea.

The area, which is now San Elizario, TX, is where Governor Don Juan de Oñate took possession of the land. San Elizario celebrates Governor Don Juan de Oñate’s ‘La Toma’, or taking possession of the land every April 27-39. This year will mark the 27th Rio Grande Conference and Festival. Historians from all over the world attend the conference to discuss the archives and as in Oñate’s day, it is filled with celebration. You are invited to attend and enjoy this event. The reenactment of ‘La Toma’ and Villagra’s comedy are always a hit.

El área de San Elizario, Texas, es donde el gobernador don Juan de Oñate hizo la toma de las tierras de Nuevo México.

San Elizario celebra ‘La Toma’ cada año, del 27 al 29 de abril.

En 2018 se celebra el 27o Rio Grande Conference and Festival. Historiadores de todo el mundo vienen a este evento para informarse o discutir sobre los archivos, además de sumarse al público que disfruta de la fiesta. Recalling his early days in martial arts, Ismael remembers when he was eight years old, his father took him to see a movie about ninjas. Watching these guys throwing nimble kicks and punches, he said: “This is my thing.” Soon he enrolled a Karate Academy and, years later, he won his first international championship. Business and piloting airplanes are also hobbies that give Palma his passionate, adventurous character.

Al recordar sus inicios en las artes marciales, Ismael expresa que a los 8 años su papa lo llevó a ver una película de ninjas; al ver a unos tipos tirando ágiles patadas y golpes, se dijo: “esto es lo mío”. Pronto ingresó a la academia y, años después, ganó su primer campeonato internacional.

Los negocios y pilotear naves son también aficiones que apasionan su carácter aventurero.

En su personalidad se arraiga el espíritu implacable para conseguir grandes metas, pues a pesar de haberse alejado durante 12 años de las competencias, su regreso hizo realidad un sueño de más de 20 años: conquistar para México el campeonato mundial de la Liga Nacional de Cintas Negra 2017 (National Blackbelt League), efectuado en la ciudad de Nueva York, donde se enfrentó con diestros combatientes de distintos países.

He has an implacable soul, that is his nature. Despite being away from competition for almost twelve years, his return made a dream come true: conquer the World Championship of the National Blackbelt League 2017, held in New York City, where he was confronted against skilled fighters from different countries.

“I returned to Martial Arts thanks to the fact that I have given speeches about personal growth to young students of Ciudad Juarez. I wanted to show them that they can get anywhere they want,” says Ismael.

“Regresé a las artes marciales gracias a que he impartido pláticas de superación personal a jóvenes estudiantes de Ciudad Juárez. Quise demostrarles con el ejemplo que sí pueden llegar a donde ellos quieran”, nos comenta Ismael.

In karate many believe in degrees but, for Ismael, colors of belts do not exist because, beyond physical strength, spirituality is what leads you to success: “there are three simple steps but very little practiced: gratitude, faith, and love; If you love what you do, you will always succeed. Abundance is not pursued, it is tuned.”

En el karate muchos creen en los grados; en cambio, para Ismael los colores no existen porque más allá de la fuerza física, la espiritualidad da mejor resultado para ser exitoso: “hay 3 pasos simples muy poco practicados: la gratitud, la fe y el amor; si amas lo que haces, siempre vas a tener éxito.

La abundancia no se persigue, se sintoniza”.

Palma coaches seminars in several countries. He remarks the development oneself mentally and spiritually rather than physical, because “The Martial Art is a form of expression that must be combined with love, because through love you learn the fundamental lessons, lose or win a fight.”

According to the champion, the philosophy of love is a trigger to turn the apparently bad into good results. Keep on seeding love and earning success, Ismael Palma!

Palma imparte seminarios en varios lugares del continente americano, donde hace hincapié en trabajar más el aspecto mental y espiritual que el físico, porque “el arte marcial es una forma de expresión que debe combinarse con el amor, pues a través de él se aprenden las lecciones fundamentales, pierdas o ganes una pelea”.

Según este campeón, la filosofía del amor es un detonador para convertir lo aparentemente malo en buenos resultados. ¡Sigue sembrando amor y cosechando éxito, Ismael Palma!

The event was attended by the Honorary Consul of Spain Martha Vera and more than a hundred participants from the border area, including the mayor of El Paso, Dee Margo, and his wife, some businessmen, and the members of the Cultural Society of Spain.

La velada contó con la presencia de la Cónsul Honoraria de España Martha Vera y más de un centenar de asistentes originarios de la franja fronteriza, entre ellos el alcalde de El Paso, Dee Margo, y su esposa, algunos empresarios, y los miembros de la Sociedad Cultural de España.

The Consul expressed that both states, Texas and New Mexico were the cradles of a beautiful mixture of miscegenation. “Our grandparents settled here and that blood is in our veins. We are all Spanish mestizos and we must never forget it. They are our roots and we must love them”.

La cónsul destacó que ambos estados ―Texas y Nuevo México― fueron la cuna de una hermosa mezcla de mestizaje. “Nuestros abuelitos se establecieron aquí y esa sangre está en nosotros. Todos somos mestizos españoles y nunca debemos olvidarlo: son nuestras raíces y debemos amarlas”.

Nothing better than this expression of great cultural content to understand our legacy, because Flamenco goes back much further than the Spanish. In its origin Muslim, Jewish, and gypsy traditions are also fused. That’s how rich flamenco is.

That is how diverse our heritage is.

Nada mejor que esta expresión de gran capital artístico para comprender nuestro legado, pues en realidad nos remonta mucho más allá de lo español: en su origen se funden también tradiciones musulmanas, judías y gitanas.

Así de rico es el flamenco; así de diversa, nuestra herencia.

hoever comes to Cuban territory understands that he or she needs to be open-minded to appreciate how different elements coexist in the same place. Cars from the fifties circulate almost miraculously next to luxurious Chinese vehicles with a familiarity that It collapses our conception of time.

uien llega a territorio cubano comprende que necesita abrir la mente para poder apreciar cómo conviven en un mismo lugar tantos elementos diferentes: autos de la década de los años cincuenta, de todos los colores, circulan casi milagrosamente junto a lujosos vehículos chinos con una normalidad que colapsa nuestra concepción del tiempo.

In Old Havana, we find the first buildings to be built in America from the Spanish Colony, located not that far from the whiteness of the National Capitol, so similar to the one at the United States that manages to confuse you. But when you get to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, an exotic six-domed architectonical jewel, you think you went mad. To make matters better, entering some of the hotels drops you into some sort of space-time of the past until the images out of the modern TV screen at the bars return you to 2018.

También podemos ver edificaciones coloniales en La Habana Vieja, de las primeras construidas en el Continente Americano, ubicadas no muy lejos de la blancura del Capitolio Nacional, tan parecido al de los Estados Unidos que logra confundirte. Pero ya cuando llegas a la catedral ortodoxa rusa, exótica joya de seis cúpulas, crees que te volviste loco. Por si fuera poco, entrar a varios de los hoteles te sumerge en algún espacio-tiempo del pasado, hasta que las imágenes de la moderna pantalla del bar te regresan a 2018.

Sus sabores, colores y el ritmo de su música nos maravillan.

The joy of its people is a mixture of skin and hair colors, combined with the hot and humid weather. Always with friendly smiles on their faces, they never surrender to adversity. Cuban people give tourists beautiful smiles and kindness. You can see Cubans dancing, singing or talking on the streets of Havana, leaning on their balconies, walking on the boardwalk. Some offer you tours through town; others tell anecdotes about life on the Island. Here the people are educated since almost all of them have College education.

Finalmente, la gente: mezcla de colores de piel y cabello, en combinación con un clima caluroso y húmedo, hacen florecer la alegría de la vida en los rostros de quienes no se rinden ante la adversidad y regalan al turista hermosas sonrisas y amabilidad. Puedes ver a los cubanos bailando, cantando o platicando en las calles de La Habana, asomados en los balcones, caminando en el malecón. Algunos te ofrecen opciones para conocer su país; otros cuentan anécdotas sobre la vida en la isla. Aquí las personas son cultas, pues casi todas estudian una carrera universitaria.

The Plaza de Armas is a historic site that can be the start point for touring Havana. There is where the ‘cochaleros’ wait for tourists to give them a great tour through Cuban history. Other interesting landmarks are the Capitolio and the Cristóbal Colón Cemetery.

La Plaza de Armas es un sitio histórico que puede ser el punto de partida para recorrer La Habana. Ahí los ‘cochaleros’ esperan al turismo para darle un gran paseo por la historia cubana. Otros puntos interesantes son el Capitolio y el cementerio Cristóbal Colón.

Asentada en un archipiĂŠlago del Mar Caribe, esta hermosa isla recibe al viajero con los brazos abiertos.

The carriage rides through the streets of Old Havana are very nice. I recommend the “Dos Hermanos” bar, where you can drink mojitos. “La Bodeguita del Medio” is one of the most famous restaurants in the world. You cannot leave La Havana without eating at “El Guajirito”, whose façade looks gloomy, but its interior is incredibly beautiful and modern, plus it offers delicious dishes and great shows.

Es muy agradable el paseo en carretas por las calles de La Habana Vieja. Recomiendo el bar “Dos Hermanos”, donde se preparan refrescantes mojitos. “La Bodeguita del Medio” es uno de los restaurantes más famosos del mundo, pero no puedes irte sin comer en “El Guajirito”, cuya fachada parece tétrica, pero su interior es increíblemente bello y moderno. Además, ofrece platillos deliciosos y buen show nocturno.

Definitely, Varadero is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. A very popular town for its calm turquoise waters. Located one hour from Havana, Varadero is a must stop to relax. It has luxurious hotels and golf courses.

Entre las playas más hermosas del mundo, sin duda están las de Varadero, una ciudad balneario popular por sus tranquilas aguas color turquesa. Situada a una hora de La Habana, es una parada indispensable para relajarse.

Cuenta con lujosos hoteles y campos de golf.

Its nightlife is also very rich. Whether in the city or on the beach, it’s worth going out to dance and have fun any day of the week.

La vida nocturna es tan rica o más que la diurna. Ya sea en la ciudad o en la playa, vale la pena salir a bailar y divertirse cualquier día de la semana.

The old Spanish colony, the island that was directed by the United States and then dependant of the former Soviet Union, the survivor of the economic blockage and tough living conditions, subjugates the visitor and conquers his heart forever.

he internationally known documentarian Ángel Estrada Soto, a graduate of the University of Ciudad Juárez, is one of the artists that has made efforts to show to the world the true face of his hometown and the stories of its people.

l documentalista internacional Ángel Estrada Soto, egresado de la Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez, es uno de los pocos hombres que se han esforzado por mostrar al mundo la verdadera cara de su ciudad natal y las historias de su gente.

With a calm but firm voice, he tells that at thirteen he had his first approach to images when he made an internship at Televisora Nacional (now Channel 44). He grew fond for art and literature, and at 19 he felt the need to speak his mind to the world about the border social problems, especially on the issues of marginalized groups and public security: “My camera was my tool. It was so easy to use it as a discursive instrument.”

Con voz pausada pero firme, comenta que a los 13 años tuvo su primer acercamiento con la imagen en movimiento, cuando colaboró en la empresa Televisora Nacional (Canal 44). Fue desarrollando inquietudes por el arte y la literatura, hasta que a los 19 sintió la necesidad de decirle al mundo lo que pensaba sobre la problemática social fronteriza, especialmente en los temas de grupos marginados y seguridad pública: “Mi herramienta era la cámara; fue muy orgánico usarla como instrumento discursivo”.

When violence against women was unleashed, many documentarians came to Juarez. Estrada felt the need to say something about it, but “from within”. The influence of several thinkers and filmmakers has allowed him to mature his ideas and present his work in international film festivals, where he has been recognized.

Estrada sintió la necesidad de participar para aportar un discurso “desde adentro”, de contarle al mundo lo que estaba sucediendo realmente. Juarez´ film maker feels connected to every atmosphere, and story he tells through cinemma his greatest passion.

At 25, he projected his first film: “Tierra Prometida” (Promise Land, 2003), on this film Estrada shows the story of a low-income family. In 2007 he premiered “Mago… El Misterio de la Vida” (Mago, the Mystery of Life), where he tells the story of Border Muralist Mago Gandara. The film was nominated for the Ariel Awards in 2008, this launched his career to more ambitious projects.

“Escenarios de Guerra” (War Scenarios, 2010), “Me llamaban King Tiger (They Called Me King Tiger, 2017) and other documentaries gave Angel Estrada more than ten awards in film festivals in The United States, Mexico, Argentina, and Cuba. To produce a short can take months, Angel explains, and to produce a feature film can take years, so it must be a story that he is passionate about.

Described as a restless pursuer and explorer of new paths, Angel is now working on new eye-opening projects that hopefully will provoke a change of mind. Estrada Soto is an active member of a number of organizations and is true with his convictions. He steps aside from the spotlight because what he wants is that his stories contribute to the city wellness and that the needs of marginal groups may be attended.

Fue a los 25 años cuando expuso su primer documental formal: “Tierra Prometida” (2003), que aborda la vida de una familia de escasos recursos. En 2007 lanzó “Mago… el Misterio de la Vida”, donde cuenta la historia de la muralista fronteriza Mago Gándara. El filme fue nominado al premio Ariel en 2008, lo cual le abrió las puertas al cineasta hacia más proyectos ambiciosos.

“Escenarios de Guerra” (2010), “Me llamaban King Tiger” (2017) y otros documentales, le han dado a Estrada más de 10 premios en festivales de países como México, Estados Unidos, Argentina, España y Cuba.

El cineasta explica que elaborar un ‘corto’ le toma meses y puede tardar años en un largometraje, por eso para cada uno busca la historia que lo apasione.

Definido como buscador inquieto y explorador de nuevos caminos, ahora prepara proyectos para invitar a la reflexión y lograr un cambio. Estrada Soto, miembro de varias organizaciones civiles, se mantiene fiel a sus convicciones, alejado del protagonismo, porque desea que sus historias contribuyan al mejoramiento social de Ciudad Juárez y a que sean atendidas las necesidades de los grupos marginados.

An artistic phenomenon that was born near the Magical Town of Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, next to the archaeological zone of PaquimĂŠ.

This is the community of Juan Mata Ortiz, Mexican pride, whose prodigious hands produce beautiful pottery pieces recognized internationally.

El iniciador fue Juan Quezada, autodidacta atraído por el barro, quien se inspiró en la cerámica aridoamericana de sus antepasados.

Las valiosas piezas son ollas y vasijas decoradas mediante un estilo muy característico, que ha evolucionado en perfección.

They do not use sketches to paint the pottery, they use own ideas and good pulse.

The pots are painted by hand, with a human hair brush. The surface is used by the artist as a canvas. The traces are so exact 48that they seem to be made by a computer.

Its technique is a result of observation of color and geometric patterns and is used by more than 300 artisans of the region.

El argumento deriva de los recientes atentados terroristas que han conmocionado a la nación; en uno de los casos, se ha determinado que uno de los presuntos involucrados ingresó al país al ser beneficiario de una visa de residencia obtenida a través de la “Lotería de visas”.

En base a ese contexto, se ha establecido una propuesta denominada Reforma de Inmigración Americana para un Empleo Fuerte (RAISE, por sus siglas en inglés), que, entre otros, eliminaría la “Lotería de visas”, limitaría la obtención de la residencia a través de la familia y reemplazaría el actual sistema de empleo permanente por un sistema de puntos basado en habilidades y educación del inmigrante.

Para el abogado Luis Núñez, “esta situación es muy grave, no solo por la eliminación de la “Lotería de visas”, sino porque limitaría sustancialmente la posibilidad de muchos inmigrantes de obtener la residencia a través de peticiones efectuadas por sus familiares ciudadanos o residentes de los Estados Unidos, inmigración en cadena, sea que se efectúe dentro o fuera de los Estados Unidos, así como las dificultades de los inmigrantes que desean obtener la residencia a través de un empleador americano dado que ahora se estaría condicionando su aprobación a las calificaciones del inmigrante a través de un puntaje determinado por su educación, dominio del idioma inglés, monto del salario ofrecido, edad, entre otros”.

Lo prioritario, sugiere Núñez, es que ante la posibilidad de una futura aprobación de esta propuesta de Ley, los ciudadanos americanos presenten, lo antes posible, sus peticiones familiares, especialmente a favor de sus padres, hermanos e hijos mayores, y respecto de los residentes permanentes, para sus hijos solteros mayores.

Piña also showed his pride and thankfulness to Martha Zavala, former director of the Gallery.

The new administration will show the cultural diversity conformed by the artists of the region, especially those skilled in the traces, the canvas and the combination of colors.

The artistic community of the border enjoyed the Antonio Piñas´ exhibit “Conciencia de la Unidad”. “All of us come from the same source of energy; we forget that all we see and touch comes from the same source that is God”.

La nueva administración del recinto pretende mostrar el mosaico cultural conformado por los artistas de la región, en especial de los más diestros en los trazos, el lienzo y la combinación de colores.

La comunidad artística de la región fronteriza disfrutó la exposición “Conciencia de la Unidad”, de Antonio Piña.

Según su visión, “Todos venimos de la misma mata de energía; nos olvidamos de que todo lo que vemos y tocamos viene de esa mata que es Dios”.

The devices help to obtain better visual precision during surgical interventions such as gastric bypass, vesicles, hiatal hernia, kidney, among other several specialties that require them, such gynecology, urology, and orthopedics. Currently, there are three teams, two fixed towers and one portable.

Esto nos permite intervenciones de mayor seguridad y precisión”, explica.

Para el pionero de la cirugía laparoscópica en Juárez, el estar capacitado para usar esta tecnología representa una gran satisfacción: “ser juarense y pertenecer a esta gran institución como Director General es un gran orgullo”.

Mendoza, quien ha recibido entrenamiento en diversas especialidades en diferentes partes del mundo, explica que después de varios lustros en la práctica, ahora atiende a segundas generaciones de pacientes, y nada mejor que hacerlo equipados con tecnología de punta, aunque destaca que el recurso humano es lo más importante.

“Agradezco a Dios la capacidad y la oportunidad de ser cirujano”.

En la actualidad, el CME cuenta con 115 médicos y 470 empleados dispuestos siempre a ejercer la maravillosa profesión de servir en la medicina con un trato humanitario.

The castle had many functions in the past. The most antique was the residence of the mexica king Moctezuma II, before the arrival of the spanish people, now days is the National Museum of History, where is showed principally the history and objects of their honorable occupants as the presidents Benito Juárez and Porfirio Díaz. It was the Militar College in the time where the internal defended the Castle ante the foreign invasion, recognized as Hero Boys. One of the squares has they’re six allusive sculptures.

We can enjoy the gardens perfectly cultivated, terraces with rooms, where we can find the carriages, the dinning room, the living room for visitors, the bathrooms, the play room, with decoration and furniture of the époque, and paintings and murals, where we can appreciate the history of México. El paisaje de árboles centenarios nos va remontando hacia otros tiempos; los sonidos de “Chapultepec” nos transportan hacia la época precolombina, cuando el emperador Moctezuma recibía en su residencia, situada en lugar del castillo, el pescado fresco traído por los mensajeros desde Veracruz, pero su arquitectura es la de un palacio europeo.

Como dato curioso, la leyenda cuenta que doña Carlota, esposa de Maximiliano, mandó construir una larga calle con la intención de observar desde la terraza de los vitrales el carruaje barroco sobredorado de su marido. Actualmente, el Paseo de la Reforma es la avenida más hermosa de la ciudad.

El castillo ha tenido distintas funciones: fue vivienda de virreyes, del emperador Maximiliano y de presidentes como Benito Juárez y Porfirio Díaz; fue Colegio Militar cuando lo defendieron contra la invasión extranjera sus estudiantes, los famosos Niños Héroes. Actualmente es el Museo Nacional de Historia, papel perfecto para este magnífico testigo de tanta vida.

s part of the celebration of International Women’s Day, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce paid tribute to leaders of the region at a ceremony held in the main hall of the Wyndham Hotel, located in East El Paso. This event is part of the Woman Business Border Center program and the Small Business Administration of the United States.

Paulo Aguirre, Director of Communications of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, stated the importance of recognizing the work of women leaders, setting them as an example and exhorting them to take risks to open their own businesses.

At the ceremony, eight prominent leaders of the border region were recognized. The highlights were Yolanda Arriola, founder and Executive Director of South West University in El Paso, and Chandra Edwards-Cottingham, owner, and manager of the Wet-N-Wild Waterworld water park.

In addition, there were four panelists nationally known for revolutionizing different sectors: Patty Arvielo, President of the New American Funding; Elizabeth Gallagher, CEO of Gallagher Group; Heather Neary, President of Auntie Anne’s, and Nina Tassle, former President and Senior Advisor of CBS Entertainment.

The event began with a presentation of El Paso women who ran for Congress in District 16 in the last elections, including Dori Fenenbock and Verónica Escobar, the current candidate elected by the Democratic Party.
