Without his teachings, strength and passion for his career -agriculture-I would not have had such an excellent example. For everything, I dedicate this edition to my father.

For this reason, we visited the town of Deming in New Mexico where the St. Clair table wine is produced. It was very pleasing to know its surroundings after doing a tour in these lands. The environment is relaxing, but it is more relaxing to taste the delicious malbec and zinfandel wines and the famous mimosa. Here, we met Hervé Lescombes, who opened the doors of his home so we could gain access to his vineyard dream.

Fue muy grato conocer su entorno después de un recorrido realizado por estas tierras. ALONG THE CAMINO REAL

I

n the last issue, Don Juan de Oñate was introduced as coming from a Criollo family. His father was a silver baron and his mother was from a famous Jewish-Converso family. He was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and married Moctezuma’s great granddaughter, Isabella.

The Camino Reales or Royal Roads were described.

The one road our story is about, is the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. This Camino is 1600 miles long and was established in Mexico City in 1540 as el Camino de la Plata. The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro would finally complete its route in 1598.

D o n J u an de Oñate accepted Vi ceroy Lu is d e Velasco’s request in 1595 to engage in a self-funded expedition and colonization of Nuevo Mexico from Santa Barbara, Chihuahua to San Juan de los Caballeros, Nuevo Mexico.

Franciscans. He meticulously collected the livestock, wagons, seeds, technology, and plants that it would take to survive the long journey northward.

Our fantastic story begins along the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro in Tepotzotlán, home to the Viceroy Luis de Velasco. Espejo’s inopportune death left the expedition on hold. It is here, on August 24, 1595, that Viceroy Velasco asked his friend, Oñate, to take over the expedition, take possession of the land to the north of the Rio Del Norte, and colonize the area. He was also given the title of Governor of Nuevo Mexico.

The Rio Del Norte is known today as the Rio Grande River.

• On 26 January 1598 the (Oñate) expedition left the Arroyo de San Geronimo and passed the “Torrente de la Cruz”. Then continued almost directly south toward “Allende or Valle de S. Bartolomé.” Santa Cruz lay along this road, just south of the Río de Parral.

• On 27 January 1598 the (Oñate) expedition spent the night at the mines of Todos Santos.

• On 28 January 1598 the (Oñate) expedition traveled two leagues from the Todos Santos mines to Ojo del Agua Hondo.

Oñate had to wait three years in Santa Barbara, Chihuahua, to begin the expedition to the north due to sabotage and jealousies from others that wanted to find the treasures of the 7 Cities of Gold of Cibola.

His friend, Viceroy Velasco was moved to the Canary Islands in November of 1595. He endured multiple and rigorous inspections from the new Viceroy, G a spa r de Zunig a Acevedo y Fon s eca. O t he r opponents would promote negative gossip to bring strife around the expedition and try to have Oñate removed.

Mr. Al Borrego’s book, “The Pudding in the Proof: The Untold Truths on the Colonization of the American Southwest” is in the process of publication. Look for it in early 2018. The references in his book are from the archival material from the expedition by Gaspar Perez de Villagra, 1598.

Oñate was able to use the time wisely. He recruited many friends to join him for the long expedition to the north. He was able to bring together 539 men, women and children. 120 of them were soldiers and 9 8

n la última edición de Border Heritage, aprendimos que Don Juan de Oñate fue hijo de un barón de plata y su madre fue judía conversa. Nació en Zacatecas, México y se casó con la bisnieta de Moctezuma.

A pesar de tantas inconveniencias, Oñate ocupo este tiempo para reclutar a muchos de sus amigos que se sumaron a la expedición. 539 familias se unieron a la causa; 120 de ellos eran soldados y 9 franciscanos.

Poco a poco recolectaron lo necesario como ganado, carretas, semillas y plantas entre otras cosas para colonizar y sobrevivir su larga jornada.

También aprendimos que existieron Camino Reales.

El Camino de nuestra historia es del Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. Este camino mide 1600 millas y se estableció en la Ciudad de México en 1540 como el Camino de la Plata. Después cambio el nombre al Camino Real de Tierra Adentro y se concluiría su recorrido en 1598.

Este aceptó y comenzó a formar su equipo. El Rio del Norte se conoce hoy como el Rio Grande.

A SAXOPHONE GENIUS CONQUERS THE WORLD: GERRY LÓPEZ The Juarez-born is considered one of the most important young musicians of his generation.

“

There’s a lot to do in music,” thought Gerry Lopez, at the age of 18, when he first went to the European continent. “At that moment, I saw myself playing at big festivals and stages. Music has taken me to many places,” he says.

His outstanding performance led him to obtain a scholarship and to graduate from the Conservatory of Paris in 2012, with a Masters in composition and arrangement. Gerry Lopez, then 22, persevered and managed to place himself in the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne in Switzerland, where he represents Mexico in the cultural field.

Today, at the age of 30, this Mexican artist and composer, born in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, is co n side re d o ne of t h e most i mportan t yo ung musicians of his generation, according to Jordi Batalle, a journalist with Radio France Internationale.

His mother started him in music when he was five years old, and that encounter fascinated him. As a medical advise, he sought for therapy with wind instruments; that was how the saxophone came into his life and he fell in love with it. He had his first performance playing piano with the “Swan Lake” play.

His hard work has given him the opportunity to participate in prestigious jazz festivals around the world, such as the one of Montreux, Switzerland; Copenhagen, Denmark; La Défense, Saint-German-des-Prés and Rennes Festival à l’Ouest in France; Rocella, Italy, and the Panama Jazz Festival. “Over the years, you develop a chip to be able to adapt to the different languages. You can not be the same everywhere because people who congregate around music and art have a lot of sensitivity.”

Gerry explains that learning to handle any instrument requires a lot of discipline and patience, to prepare the body, to have auditory sensitivity and to be open to new trends. As a Mexican, his musical influences include regional music, pop, and other Latin sounds, but jazz has been the most important music genre in the last 15 years. “The sound of jazz represents freedom, to give without pretensions, but also to print your personality without needing to analyze. That is how stories are told.”

His work results are four discographic productions with themes inspired by places, people and family.

He proudly expreses that he has been accepted at the “Superior Art School” of the Swiss capital, where he will work in a project to develop new techniques and methodologies for saxophone students in the

En la música hay muchas cosas por hacer”, pensó Gerry López a los 18 años, cuando por primera vez pisó el continente europeo. “En ese momento me vi tocando en grandes festivales y escenarios. La música me ha llevado a recorrer muchos lugares”, expresa emocionado.

Hoy, con 30 años, este artista y compositor mexicano, nacido en Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, es considerado uno de los jóvenes músicos más importantes de su generación, según afirma Jordi Batalle, periodista de la Radio Internacional de Francia.

Su madre lo inició en la música a los 5 años y ese encuentro lo fascinó. Por recomendación médica, buscó terapia con instrumentos de viento; fue así como llegó el saxofón a su vida y lo enamoró. Su primera presentación la hizo tocando el piano, con la obra “El lago de los cisnes”.

Gerry explica que aprender el manejo de cualquier instrumento requiere mucha disciplina y paciencia, diametrizar el cuerpo, tener sensibilidad auditiva y estar abier-

Salir de Juárez para ir al Conservatorio de la Ciudad de México representó traspasar barreras para enfrentarse a la competencia: “El ambiente cosmopolita te obliga a ir más lejos, comienzas a crecer y visualizas el camino”. Con ese empuje, logró su sueño de dirigir una 12

orquesta en el Palacio de Bellas Artes; ese fue uno de los días más importantes en su vida.

Su destacado desempeño lo llevó a obtener una beca y graduarse en el Conservatorio de París en 2012, con una Maestría en composición y arreglo. Gerry López, con entonces 22 años, fue perseverante y logró colocarse en la Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne en Suiza, país donde representa a México en el ámbito cultural.

El trabajo arduo le ha dado la oportunidad de participar en prestigiosos festivales de jazz en el mundo, como el de Montreux, Suiza; Copenhague, Dinamarca; La Défense, Saint-Germain-des-

¡Viva la música!

Orgulloso, expresa que ha sido aceptado en la “Alta Escuela de las Artes” de la capital helvética, donde trabajará un proyecto para desarrollar nuevas técnicas y metodologías para los estudiantes de saxofón de occidente, lo que significa una contribución para la historia latinoamericana de este instrumento.

•Ha realizado clases magistrales y conferencias en el Conservatorio Didier Lockwood en Francia, durante el Festival de Jazz de Panamá, en la Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México, Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez, Universidad Autónoma de Veracruz y el Centro Cultural MJC en Rennes, entre otras instituciones.

Consciente del lugar que ocupa este genio en el saxofón, quien radica en la comunidad alemana de Freiburg, su deseo es volver a Juárez para tocar con su orquesta, impulsar nuevos proyectos donde se involucre a niños y participar en un festival de jazz digno.

•Ha dado numerosos conciertos en el marco de intercambios culturales en países como Rusia, España, Croacia, Bélgica, Alemania, Holanda, Marruecos, Venezuela, Colombia, Perú, Costa Rica, Guatemala y Estados Unidos.

•Es el primer músico mexicano oficialmente patrocinado por Selmer y Vandoren Paris.

Como una muestra de humildad y respeto a sus raíces, Gerry concluye: “Juárez es muy importante porque es mi centro, es venir y ser el mismo niño que nunca se fue, que ama su barrio y hace cosas cotidianas. Esa es mi esencia”.

Bringing the Best of the Best to El Paso

T

he annual Las Artistas Art & Fine Crafts Show, happening on November 18 and 19, is one of El Paso’s most anticipated events leading into the holiday season.

Each year, art lovers and shoppers flock to the weekend-long showcase of the finest art and crafts made by more than 90 artists and crafts people from El Paso and beyond.

Shoppers will discover a wide variety of paintings, prints, ceramics, fiber, jewelry, metal, wood, wearable art and more in a range of prices. Held at one of El Paso’s most creative venues, the E P I C RAILYARD Even t Cen ter (located on 2201 East Mills Avenue), this is the show to attend to find distinctive and fun holiday gifts or to collect fine art and craft.

Admission is $7 per day, free for children under 18, and there is free valet parking. Food trucks will be serving tasty and portable cuisine.

Friday Night Preview Party Kicks Off a Weekend of Art The public is invited to get a first look at some of the art and fine 16

The quality of the work is exceptional: the participating artists and craftspeople ha ve m e t L a s A r t ista s’ str i c t standards for originality, creative vision, technique, and craftsmanship.

The show features many of the region’s notable artists, including painters Aleksander Titovets and A m a d o P e n a J r. a n d l o c a l woodworker Justin Ahrens and jewelry artist Pam Schuster. The emerging artists section of the show features several new talented entrants, such as painter Paul Maxwell and clay artist Leticia

Luevanos – further enhancing the show’s diverse range of media and perspectives.

Las Artistas provides students from UTEP’s Metals and Ceramics program with a unique opportunity to show and sell their work.

Students participate in this “learning classroom”, where they int e r a c t w i t h c u s t o m e r s , get feedback about their work, and gain marketing experience. The UTEP student booth is always a popular one at the show.

Under the guidance of art teacher Candie Printz, students from the El Dorado High School recycled arts project, It’s Your World, will be selling creative and functional items made with found objects. All proceeds from the sales of their work will be donated to support local non-profit organizations.

SCIENCE IN ACTION “Doctor Skateboard” uses sports to bring young people to the exciting field of science.

O

ne of the activities that entertain young people the most, are sports. In addition to helping them to strengthen their health, it teaches them to strive to overcome difficulties. However, we sometimes forget that fields such as medicine, mathematics, physics, and psychology are closely related to sports and, because of this, almost all sports activities can be used for teaching-learning processes in a practical and meaningful way for the student.

How can we use extreme sports, such as skating, to teach physics or algebra, to train to collect data and help students to be motivated to have a better development in their logical-mathematical

thinking and scientific skills? In order to answer this question, a term called Science of Action was developed by Bill Robertson, better known as “Doctor Skateboard”, who was recently in Ciudad Juarez to explain his methodology.

During the course of the activities, various tools and techniques were offered to motivate young people to study their professional careers in the fields of science, which are so important for the country’s development.

Dozens of young people attended the presentation at the Parque Extremo to admire stunts and skateboarding tricks while “Doctor Skateboard” explained, through science, how these movements are possible thanks to the Newton’s laws of motion and gravity, besides taking into account the relationship between speed and accelerations.

Bill Robertson has been a professional skater for more than 35 years, he is a full-time professor at the University of Texas at El Paso and an expert in science education, c urric ul um d eve lo p m en t a n d technology integration at basic levels. In addition, he combines his scientific knowledge with his passion for extreme sports.

na de las actividades que más entretienen a los jóvenes es el deporte. Además de ayudar a fortalecer su salud, los enseña a esforzarse para superar las dificultades. Sin embargo, a veces olvidamos que áreas como la medicina, las matemáticas, la física y la psicología están muy relacionadas con el deporte y, debido a esto, casi todas las actividades deportivas pueden ser utilizadas para llevar a cabo procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje de una manera práctica y significativa para el estudiante de ciencias.

Bill Robertson ha sido patinador profesional durante más de 35 años, es profesor de tiempo completo en la Universidad de Texas en El Paso y experto en educación en ciencias, desarrollo curricular e integración de tecnologías en niveles básicos. Además, combina sus conocimientos científicos con la pasión por los deportes extremos.

Durante el desarrollo de las actividades se ofrecieron diversas herramientas y técnicas para motivar a los jóvenes a estudiar carreras del campo de las ciencias, que son tan importantes para el avance de un país.

Like every year, El Paso, Texas transformed the atmosphere of the Sun City Music Festival (SCMF), where electronic sounds became the protagonists of one of the most influential events among youth.

The Ascarate Park hosted thousands of attendees who shuddered in three different stages with rhythms that moved bodies and stirred souls, lighting effects and imposing screens.

Artists like Above & Beyond, Don Diablo, Borgore, Drezo, Snails and Marshmello surprised the audience with innovative mixes. The participation of Khalid, originally from El Paso, also surprised the attendees with songs like ‘Young, Dumb & Broke’ and ‘Silence’.

CRAFT BREWERY IN THE MAGICAL TOWN OF CREEL

The Copper Lodge brewery-hotel seeks to be environmentally friendly and benefit the producers’ economy.

f we are talking about new things, the magical town of Creel will have a new attraction in a local hotel: it is the craft brewery that offers a new concept to those who l i ke t o v i s i t t h e p a ra d i s i a ca l landscapes of the Chihuahua mountains.

This model of tourist attraction, which is unique in the country, is thought to be environmentally friendly because it will not use bottles, labels, nor gasoline to produce the beer that will go directly from the fermentation tank to the barrel and then to the glass.

The process does not generate any type of contamination.

The Copper Lodge Craft Brewery was recently inaugurated by the

businessman Agustin Garcia Muñoz, who emphasized that the main objective is to support the economy of Mexican producers.

As for the types of available beer, the brewery will have Porter beer, made with toasted malts; Blonde Ale beer, with a fruity touch, and Pies Ligeros, a tasteful drink.

The ceremony was attended by the state governor, Javier Corral Jurado; the secretary general of government, Cesar Jauregui; Hector Rochin, mayor of Boconya; the secretary of Innovation and Economic Development, Alejandra de la Vega, and the hostess, Cristina Muñoz Alcocer, president of the Hotels and Motels Association. A percentage of the funds raised by two glamorous events will go to the treatments and programs of the El Paso Diabetes Association.

lamour, fashion, and altruism where the elements that motivated the border community to be part of two events that benefited the El Paso Diabetes Association. These events are the “Christian Dior White Party” and the “Shades of Blue Gala”, which in its 2017 edition had pleasant surprises.

Breakfast in white and a dinner in blue, fashion, elegance and surprises to help a good cause.

In the first event, the summer atmosphere highlighted a runway of elegant dresses where white shades predominated. Christian Dior beauty line was also present with its exclusive range of products, tips, makeup tutorials and facial treatments. All of this happened while the attendants enjoyed a delicious breakfast accompanied with champagne.

In the same vein, a welcome cocktail was held in the Workshops of Southwest University, where an elegant dinner took place. This time, blue shades were the special characteristic of the event.

As a way of raising awareness about the consequences and effects of diabetes, vegetable arrangements were placed as table centers and statistics of mortality as a result of this condition were shown.

About 300 people attended this celebration organized

by Cinthia and Chris Arriola, with the great support of Southwest University. During the event, a dynamic was also made to qualify the culinary art of about 16 chefs of the sponsoring restaurants like Crave, Mesa Street Grill, Tacoholics, Sunland Park, Gusto and some Japanese chains.

A raffle was held where various articles and trips with destinations such as Panama and many Mexican beaches sparked the excitement of the attendees, whose goal was to help combat a health problem: diabetes.

Todo esto mientras las asistentes degustaban un delicioso desayuno acompañado con champagne.

En esta ocasión, los tonos azules fueron el distintivo que enmarcó el evento.

Como una manera de hacer conciencia sobre la afectación de la diabetes, fueron colocados arreglos de verduras como centros de mesa y se mostraron estadísticas de mortalidad a consecuencia de este padecimiento.

In this territory of 180 acres, at an approximate height of 1,370 meters, 7 to 10 tons of grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Moscato, Merlot, Zinfandel, among other types) are produced. The spacing is of one thousand vines per acre in order to have adequate access to sunlight and water.

The harvest takes place between the months of August to September trough a high technology harvester; grapes are rarely collected by hand.

The white grapes are sent to the winery to be processed, while the inks are camouflaged in stainless steel tanks for fermentation.

The winery is located at the heart of the Mimbres Valley in Deming, the oldest wine producing region of the United States, with a capacity of 500 thousand gallons. This place houses more than 50 tanks. The barrels are from American or French oak and the wine has to remain there for three to five months, depending on the desired type of wine.

La bodega está ubicada en el corazón del Valle de Mimbres en Deming, la región productora de vino más antigua de Estados Unidos, con capacidad para 500 mil galones. The Oaxacan woman has fairy hands for weaving and embroidering, seasoning comparable to a French chef, millenarian knowledge of the region’s herbs, as well as strength and creativity because she is very hardworking.

La mujer oaxaqueña tiene manos de hada para tejer o bordar, sazón equiparable al de un chef francés, conocimientos milenarios de las hierbas de su región, además de fortaleza y creatividad porque es muy trabajadora.

Animals craved in wood of unusual colors, denominated alebrijes, and hammocks whose fabric takes care of the user’s dreams, in addition to textiles of loom and ceramics of black clay are part of the cultural richness that only fits the imagination of the artisans from Oaxaca.

DACA AND THE UNCERTAINTY OF THOUSANDS OF DREAMERS With the possibility of repealing the program, Villalobos & Moore offers free advice to those who are currently under this protection.

fter the controversy generated by the repeal of the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program, introduced by the Barack Obama administration, a great concern h a s a ro u s e d t h ro u g h o u t t h e American Union.

The problem is that this benefit, given to thousands of students and people who came to the United States when they were young, will be without effect in a short period of time, according to the actual president Donald Trump, who argued the need to put a limit to the number of migrants that come to the United States.

Meanwhile, Congress must find alternatives to delay this migratory plan and find a way to favor the DREAMers.

Luis Núñez, a lawyer of the Villalobos & Moore firm, warns about the importance of all people in these conditions to be informed in order to renew their permit before October 5 of this year. It is important to note that the renewal of this permit will be available, once only, for those whose permit expiration is before March 5, 2018.

At least 800 thousand undocumented people in the United States are under the protection of DACA, this is why it is warned that those who do not qualify for renewal will live under a situation of uncertainty.

Although the program did not offer them legal permanence in the States, at least it allowed them to move freely and to work in the American Union.

“As a firm, we are trying to encourage t h e s e y o u n g p e o p le t h ro u g h consultations and support to apply for the renewal process. Also, we can show them other scenarios to find the best way to help them before the renewal limit date.

S i m i l a r ly, w e m a ke a c a l l o n employers in El Paso and Las Cruces who need counseling to support their workers if they are under the DACA program. We do this for free.”

The lawyer explains that there is a p o s s i b i l i t y t h a t t h e re n e w a l deadline may be extended, as certain laws and guidelines have been violated, but the Court will make that decision.

GALA NIGHT FOR A SMILE T The attendees united in an inspiring gesture with one goal: offering happiness to children with cleft lip.

he contribution of one night will forever change the life of a child and will make him smile thanks to the good heart of those attending the event “A Night Smile Gala”, for the benefit of the Sm ile Ne t wo rk I nte r n a ti on a l organization.

A sile nt a c t io n, a m o n g oth er surprises, was held during a dinner hosted by the El Paso Zoo Pavilion.

The night was a great experience, framed in a musical background and surrounded by zebras that resembled a safari theme.

The support and enthusiasm of all the participants paid off because the doctors from the Southwest Plastic Surgery clinic, organizer of the gala, will sponsor the operation of 48 children that suffer from this lip problem.

Unity manages to meet common goals; in this case, it makes a difference in the lives of those who need it most, which is the mission of Smile Network International. We thank you for benefiting so many families and giving us an example of what generosity looks like.

a contribución de una noche cambiará para siempre la vida de un niño y lo hará sonreír, gracias al buen corazón de los asistentes al evento “A Night Smile Gala”, en beneficio de la organización Smile Network International.

El apoyo y entusiasmo de todos rindieron frutos, pues en breve los médicos de la clínica Southwest Plastic Surgery, organizadora de esta gala, auspiciarán la operación de 48 niños para solucionar su padecimiento.

Una subasta silenciosa, entre otras sorpresas, se llevó a cabo durante una cena ofrecida en el Pabellón del zoológico de El Paso, Texas. La noche resultó toda una experiencia, enmarcada en un ambiente musical y rodeado de cebras, al estilo safari.

La unión logra cumplir objetivos comunes; en este caso, hace una diferencia en las vidas de quienes más lo necesitan, lo cual es misión de Smile Network International. Les agradecemos por haber beneficiado a tantas familias y darnos un ejemplo de generosidad.

elonging to the sixth generation of French winegrowers, whose family lineage has spanned three continents, HervĂŠ Lescombes was born in Africa but lived for a long time in France due to his ancestors migrating from one place to another. They dedicated their lives to agriculture and wine production since the mid-eighteenth century.

In his beginnings, HervĂŠ directed the successful winery Domaine de Perignon in Burgundy, France, but it was in America where he found his best experience and the opportunity of growth in this business. With the intention of making a radical change, he took a map and moved to the United States in 1980 because he thought that New Mexico would be a good place to start since the climate is very similar to the one in his native Algeria.

In 1981 he made his first sowings and, in 1984, his first bottled crop. As a visionary entrepreneur, he knows that the costumer does not buy wines directly from the vineyards; so he founded 4 restaurants to sell his product with the St. Clair brand. In addition, at least 3 times a month, management organizes wine tours that include visits to plantations, wineries and the Lescombes house, which has an underground cava stocked with the best variety of wines.

Mr. Lescombes lives in Las Cruces, is a widower and has 2 children. He spends half of his week in the vineyard for pleasure because he retired 20 years ago: “It is a very pleasant life,” he says. To keep a business of this nature, it is necessary to invest a lot of time because there is a need to plant and wait for the harvest, which takes three to four years.

En 1981 hizo sus primeras siembras y, en 1984, su primera cosecha embotellada. Como empresario de visión, sabe que el consumidor no compra vinos directamente en los viñedos; por eso fundó 4 restaurantes para expender su producto con la marca St. Clair. Además, al menos 3 veces al mes, la gerencia organiza rutas del vino que incluyen visitas a plantaciones, a las bodegas de producción y a la casa Lescombes, que cuenta con una cava subterránea surtida con la mejor variedad de vinos.

erteneciente a la sexta generación de vitivinicultores franceses, cuyo linaje familiar ha abarcado tres continentes, Hervé Lescombes nació en África, pero vivió mucho tiempo en Francia debido a que sus antepasados migraron de un lugar a otro.

Ellos dedicaron su vida a la agricultura y producción de vino desde mediados del siglo XVIII.

El señor Lescombes reside en Las Cruces, es viudo y tiene 2 hijos. Pasa la mitad de la semana en el viñedo por gusto, pues tiene 20 años de haberse retirado: “es una vida muy agradable”, expresa. Para mantener un negocio de esta naturaleza es necesario invertir largo tiempo porque hay que plantar y esperar la cosecha que tarda de tres a cuatro años.

En sus inicios, Hervé dirigió la exitosa bodega Domaine de Perignon en Borgoña, Francia, pero en América encontró su mejor experiencia y la oportunidad de crecer más en este negocio. Con la intención de hacer un cambio radical, tomó un mapa y se mudó a los Estados Unidos en 1980 porque pensó que Nuevo México sería un buen lugar para arraigarse, pues el clima es muy parecido al de su natal Argelia.

Un hombre sencillo y de trabajo nos abre las puertas de su hogar para compartir su sueño; quien entra es recibido como un amigo, con una exquisita comida preparada por el anfitrión y por supuesto, con el mejor vino de casa.

or more than 20 years, Alexandre Robert-Tissot has been working on educational projects in Switzerland, inspired by his passion for education and the need for a change towards a 21st century-oriented education for the students. “In a generation of digital natives, one of the most re leva nt too l s fo r learn i n g i s technology located within an ethical framework and designed to respond to the challenges and opportunities of our society,” emphasizes Alexandre.

Edu some years ago in Mexico with the mission of teachers empowering the students as small agents of change: children capable of critical thinking and capable of developing in their future work life to have a positive impact in their communities. At the border, a bilingual and bicultural education is promoted so that the students can have the same opportunities.

The project consists in developing among the teachers a new teaching-learning strategy where t h ey a re n o t o n ly k n o w le d g e experts, but also learning experience facilitators that promote 72

relevant and significant skills for the new generations. It evolves from a classic or traditional model to an avant-garde model, which covers all levels of education from preschool to post-doctorate.

Georgina points out that one of the greatest challenges they face as an educational consultant is to connect the school with its community and create synergy, so that students and teachers live the application of academics in real life.

En conjunto con Georgina López-Guerra, inició Art Edu hace algunos años en México, con la misión de que los maestros empoderen a los alumnos como pequeños agentes de cambio: niños capaces de tener pensamiento crítico y de desarrollarse en su futura vida laboral para tener un impacto positivo en sus comunidades. En la frontera se promueve una educación bilingüe y bicultural para que los alumnos tengan las mismas oportunidades.

The Chamanas MUSIC WITH IDENTITY

Sonidos suaves y nostálgicos difíciles de clasificar en algún género; ellos la l aman “música fronteriza”.

I

t all started as a mixing game, but the project evolved into “The Chamanas”. Hector Carreon (guitar), Manuel Calderon (bass), Alejandro Bustillos (drums), and vocalist Paulina Reza founded the group in 2013; since then they compose their own music with a complex concept based on electronic elements with a touch of nostalgia.

The four musicians are originally from the border and have embraced their culture since they were very young. In fact, the band’s name makes reference to this fusion since it is a mixture of Spanish and English very “pocha”. They are “The Chamanas” because their message goes beyond music as an entertainment; they want to positively influence the emotions of those who listen to them.

It was in August 2015, in the presence of Enrique Bunbury, when they had their first professional performance at the El Plaza Condesa in Mexico City.

After that experience, they had opening acts for Zoe and have collaborated with bands like Enjambre and Los Angeles Negros.

“The Chamanas” simply catalog their music as border music, a fusion of indie and pop sounds: although they play genres such as traditional Mexican folk, Brazilian bossa nova and danzon, among other dark and synthetic sounds. What they are trying to do is to re gio na l iz e t he ir st y le a nd no t to p ig eon h ole themselves; they are all creators and are part of the production. They do not consider having competition and do not compare with other bands, although they

recognize their influences. They stand out for offering a Spanish alternative interpreted by a female voice.

Fue en agosto de 2015, en presencia de Enrique Bunburi, cuando tuvieron su primera tocada profesional en El Plaza Condesa de la Ciudad de México. Después de esa experiencia, estuvieron como teloneros de Zoé y han colaborado con grupos como Enjambre y Los Ángeles Negros.

The group has made its way in the two countries that influence their music and American people sing their songs, even without understanding the language. On the other hand, Mexicans living in the United States get excited when the band goes to their cities: they want to listen to their culture in the voice of their compatriots. The quality of their compositions and the public acceptance led them to be nominated for the Latin Grammy and to win the IMAS prize for best pop album of the year.

“The Chamanas” catalogan su música simplemente como fronteriza, una fusión de sonidos indie y pop: aunque abarcan géneros como el folclor tradicional mexicano, bossa nova brasileña y danzón, entre otros sonidos oscuros y sintéticos. Lo que intentan es regionalizar su estilo y no encasillarse; todos son creadores y forman parte de la producción. No consideran tener competencia ni se comparan con otros grupos, aunque reconocen sus influencias. Destacan por ofrecer una alternativa en español, interpretada por una voz femenina.

“The Chamanas” magic lies in its borderland condition in all senses: the binationality rooted in Mexican culture and a style apart from the rest of the music genres. They insist on making lyrics in Spanish, in highlighting their “Juarense” origin to generate a musical movement and to support other bands.

Meanwhile, they enjoy their growing success.

El grupo se ha abierto camino en los dos países que influencian su música y los anglosajones cantan sus canciones, aun sin entender el idioma; por otro lado, los mexicanos que viven en Estados Unidos se emocionan al recibirlos en sus ciudades: quieren escuchar su cultura en la voz de sus compatriotas. La calidad de sus composiciones y la aceptación del público los llevaron a ser nominados al Grammy Latino y a ganar el premio IMAS como mejor álbum pop del año.

Los cuatro músicos son originarios de la frontera y han abrazado su cultura desde muy pequeños. De hecho, el nombre de la banda hace referencia a esta fusión, ya que es una mezcla de español e inglés muy “pocha”. Son “The Chamanas” porque su mensaje va más allá de la música como entretenimiento, pues quieren influir positivamente en las emociones de quienes los escuchan.
