Y con ese ímpetu de esperanza y fuerza, es como Border Heritage llega a su novena edición, en la que presentamos una serie de interesantes artículos e información actual para entretener y nutrir el espíritu de nuestros lectores, a través de una agradable lectura e imágenes representativas.

Esta ocasión, en nuestra sección de Destinos, conoceremos Australia, la gran tierra del sur, un país enorme con gran riqueza cultural y humana. En Arte y Cultura, le mostraremos a uno de los más impresionantes talentos de la flauta en México: Horacio Franco; en nuestro Perfil, el actor Gilberto Barraza, orgullo de nuestra frontera, nos habla de su trabajo en el cine, teatro y televisión. En los Deportes conocerán a un destacado joven beisbolero que se perfila hacia las grandes ligas con disciplina y corazón. On this occasion, in our Destinies section, we will visit Australia, the great land down-under, a large country with much cultural and human wealth. In Arts and Culture, we will show you one of the most impressive talents with the recorder in Mexico: Horacio Franco; in our Profile, the actor Gilberto Barraza, pride of our border, will speak to us about his work in film, theatre and television. In Finance, we suggest going step by step, the twelve commandments which form the cornerstone for being successful in business. In Sports you will learn about an outstanding young baseball player who is shaping up for the big leagues with discipline and heart. Also, we will highlight the talent of two young entrepreneurs native to our border, one in the music environment and another as a conductor, who with his performance elevates our border region.

In the central theme, we invite you to learn about a place which boasts about having historical and cultural heritage: the County of San Elizario, Texas, a community that opens its doors to us as part of the celebration of the Don Juan de Oñate expedition, which took place in the year 1598.

With this and more, we invite you to admire and be witness to this great edition, on whose cover page we will show the beautiful Presidio Chapel of San Elizario, a true architectural jewel, located a few steps from the Camino Real and Tierra Adentro.

His ability to speak in public, has allowed him to escalate to a privileged position in Mexican television. And in only two years since he joined the ranks of Televisa Deportes, Juan Carlos Diaz Murrieta (Juanky) of Ciudad Juarez, shares his profession along with being a soccer fan.

At 24 years old, this talented young man native to the border city of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, es a reporter and conductor since 2015.

In his short career, he has experienced moments of great intensity, one of them, the recording of a special program for the centenary of the America team and personally, to participate in the final games of the teams Tigres-America, in Monterrey, where, as he commented, such his emotion for the triumph of his team, that he could not contain his tears, among cries and embraces for his passion.

He remembers when he was a boy he became familiar with the television environment, thanks to his uncles, Jorge and Heriberto Murrieta, he was invited to their workplace in Mexico City. Afterwards, they took him to the World Cup in France where he witnessed two of Mexico’s games, one against South Korea and another with Belgium. His emotion was such that, he became a fan of Luis Hernandez “El Matador” and adopted the Tigres de Monterrey (Monterrey Tigers) team as his favorite, which Hernandez was a part of.

“Without a doubt, a very special day, was my debut in the field of the Ciudad Juarez stadium, during the broadcasting of the “Bravos” versus “Rayados” from Monterrey.

I had an enjoyable reception, very emotional.”

Due to family matters, at 12 years old, he had to relocate to Mexico City, where he continued his education, presently, in the degree of Communications, at the Ibero American University (Universidad Iberoamericana).

Beyond the media ‘Juanky’ thinks of himself as a very relaxed and studious person, who watches soccer all day to remain well documented. “I read three newspapers daily, books about soccer, I am not very sociable, I do not like staying up late, and I exercise a lot; I also like dining out and good movies. This job is very time consuming, you travel a lot, but is very comforting.”

Su facilidad para expresarse en público le ha permitido escalar a una posición privilegiada en la televisión mexicana. Y es que, a dos años de haberse incorporado a las filas de Televisa Deportes, el juarense Juan Carlos Díaz Murrieta (Juanky) comparte su profesión con la afición al futbol.

A sus 24 años de edad, este talentoso joven es reportero y conductor del corporativo desde 2015.

Juanky recuerda que desde niño se familiarizó con el ambiente televisivo, gracias a que sus tíos, Jorge

y Heriberto Murrieta, lo invitaban a su centro de trabajo en la Ciudad de México. Luego, lo llevaron al mundial de Francia, donde presenció dos partidos de México, uno contra Corea del Sur y otro encuentro con Bélgica. Su emoción fue tal, que se hizo fan de Luis Hernández “El Matador” y adoptó al equipo de Tigres de Monterrey como su favorito, del cual formaba parte este jugador.

Por motivos familiares, a los 12 años tuvo que cambiar su residencia a la Ciudad de México, donde continúo sus estudios. Actualmente está en la carrera de Comunicación, en la Universidad Iberoamericana.

Juan Carlos cuenta: “Lo que más me apasiona es hacer entrevistas. Es divertido convivir con grandes personajes del mundo deportivo. He tenido la oportunidad de entrevistar a destacadas personalidades como André-Pierre Gignac, Enrique Borja, Zague, Paola Espinoza, Germán Sánchez, Iván “El Pollo” García y Ana Gabriela Guevara. Me encanta estar en la cancha de los estadios haciendo transmisiones en vivo, porque te vuelves protagonista del juego, parte del partido. Para mí, es un privilegio estar informando a millones de personas al mismo tiempo. Sé que 14

es mucha responsabilidad estar representando a la empresa más grande de la televisión”.

En su corta trayectoria, ha vivido momentos de gran intensidad. Uno de ellos fue la grabación del programa especial del centenario del América y participar en la final de los equipos Tigres-América, en Monterrey, donde fue tanta su emoción por el triunfo de su equipo, que no pudo contener el llanto, entre gritos y abrazos de la afición. También recuerda: “Sin duda, un día muy especial fue mi debut en la cancha del estadio de Ciudad Juárez, durante la transmisión del partido de “Bravos” contra “Rayados” de Monterrey. Tuve una recepción muy bonita, muy emotiva”.

Fuera del medio, Juanky se considera una persona muy tranquila y estudiosa. Ve futbol todo el día para estar bien documentado; además, nos dice: “Leo tres periódicos diarios y libros de futbol; no soy muy sociable, no me gusta desvelarme. Hago mucho ejercicio. También me gusta salir a cenar y ver buen cine. Este trabajo te consume mucho tiempo y hay que viajar mucho, pero es reconfortante”.

Entre las metas a mediano plazo de este entusiasta comentarista deportivo, está formar parte en el mundial de Rusia 2018 y, en un futuro, cubrir la fuente de selección nacional.

La pasión que tiene por su trabajo lo alienta a ser constante, a tener metas: “Tengo la filosofía que caracteriza a la gente de Juárez: espíritu de unión y una mentalidad ganadora. Siento un amor profundo por México, pero tenemos que cambiar la manera de hacer las cosas; debemos esforzarnos y dar el cien por ciento en todo lo que hagamos”.

Ten Actions For Effective Business Administration

In Mexico, the number of business that fail is devastating: of every ten which are created each year, seven do not survive more than two years and only one will make it through a decade. In addition, only eleven of each hundred will arrive at twenty years, according to the study “Esperanza de vida de los negocios en México” (Life Expectancy for Businesses in Mexico), recently presented by the Chamber of Commerce.

While there is no magic formula which guarantees success in business, there are ten key points for a venture managed to consolidate a sustainable company and exceed almost all crises.

1.- DON’T SPEND MORE THAN WHAT DRIVES BUSINESS. As logical as it sounds, one of the main rules which we must take into account is not to spend of invest more than what your business has the ability to generate.

Every peso which is invested in the business should have a plan that justifies it, meeting with the demand; but, above all, to locate the source and the amount of economic return that is to be achieved. Many times, without thinking, entrepreneurs feel the need to take advantage of a run of good luck to grow quickly, getting carried away by factors such as the ego and the desire to demonstrate to their competitors that their business is thriving. The emotion which drives the creation of a business can deter-

mine its decline.

2.- DRAW UP A BUDGET. This will be the compass or your business adventure travel plan and will provide you with the control of operating costs. Remember: what you cannot see, you cannot control”; due to this, keeping a budget will allow you to dominate the costs of production inputs that are variable, but also the expenses fixed as income, payroll or electricity. It is at this point where businesses stumble because the entrepreneurs do not consider it important and believe that if they carry the accounts “in their heads”, they can manage to thrive.

3.- DO NOT MAKE INDISCRIMINATE USE OF THE COMPANY’S FUNDS. Often times, business owners assume the generated profits also belong to them. Set a salary in the budget and do not incur in the mistake of taking money from the business without a follow-up. Remember: the size or turn of the company does not imply it is disorganized or that it cannot perform intelligently in its administration. Business comes first.

4.- CARRY OUT AN ANALYSIS OF EXPENDITURES. This is done with the purpose of detecting which expenses are unnecessary and finding some way to reducing them, without affecting the quality of production. It would also be of great help to com19

pare unstable prices, above all the ones which carry some parity with dollars. The goal is to save as much as possible and to achieve “doing more with less”.

5.- FREQUENTLY CHECK THE WAREHOUSE STAFF, PRODUCTION AND TRANSPORTATION OPERATIONS. Create a compact team, listen to suggestions from employees and find practical solutions avoiding duplication of functions.

Always try to focus on simplifying processes and reducing costs.

6. SET ACTUAL PRICES. This point is not less important, since many times high aspects such as expenses from advertising, maintenance or the cost of articles for cleaning are passed up. Knowing the cost of selling our product can, in many cases, be confused with what it costs to manufacture it. Companies that engage in a price war, usually end up with serious financial problems due to the unsustainability in its small profit margin.

This is how any business can be terminated, no matter what size they are.

7.- VERIFY THE COMPLIANCE OF THE PROCESSES. Good governance implies that the processes are met as they are being established.

For example, if the business is food preparation, it is necessary to check the ingredients and quantities used daily for the preparation of the dishes

8.- KEEP AN EYE ON CASH FLOW. It is of the utmost importance to monitor a company’s cash flow and avoid having empty coffers. También será de gran ayuda la comparación de precios inestables, sobre todo aquellos que llevan alguna paridad con el dólar. La finalidad es ahorrar cuanto se pueda y lograr “hacer más con menos”.

5.- REVISE FRECUENTEMENTE OPERACIONES DEL PERSONAL DE ALMACÉN, PRODUCCIÓN Y TRANSPORTE. Conforme un equipo compacto, escuche sugerencias de sus empleados y busque soluciones prácticas evitando duplicidad de funciones. Trate siempre de enfocarse en simplificar procesos y ahorrar costos.

6.- ESTABLEZCA PRECIOS REALES. Este punto no es menos importante, ya que muchas veces se pasan por alto aspectos como gastos de publicidad, mantenimiento o costo de artículos de limpieza. Saber lo que cuesta vender nuestro producto puede, en muchos casos, confundirse con lo que cuesta fabricarlo. Las compañías que se enfrascan en una guerra de precios, normalmente acaban con serios problemas financieros debido a lo insostenible de su pequeño margen de utilidad. Así puede acabar cualquier empresa, del tamaño que sea.

7.- VERIFIQUE EL CUMPLIMIENTO DE LOS PROCESOS. Una buena administración implica que se cumplan los procesos tal y como han sido establecidos. Por ejemplo, si el negocio es de comida preparada, es necesario verificar que los ingredientes y las cantidades utilizados diariamente para la elaboración de los platillos coincidan exactamente con los del manual de procedimientos.

8.- VIGILE EL FLUJO DE EFECTIVO. Es de suma importancia vigilar el flujo de efectivo del negocio y evitar tener las arcas vacías. Lo ideal es destinar parte de las ganancias a la creación de un fondo para contingencias equivalente a dos meses del promedio de sus gastos. De esta manera, usted podrá estar preparado si ocurre alguna emergencia.

9.- CUIDADO CON LAS CUENTAS POR COBRAR. Si en su sistema de ventas tiene la opción de otorgar créditos a sus clientes, monitoree la cartera vencida. Es de suma importancia darse cuenta a tiempo de quiénes son los clientes morosos para poder hacer los ajustes que permitan seguir operando con normalidad. Que no paguen justos por pecadores.

10.- RECUERDE PAGAR A TIEMPO las cuentas con proveedores, nómina, prestaciones sociales y créditos.

Manteniendo una buena reputación e historial de crédito, podrá obtener con mayor facilidad algún financiamiento cuando lo necesite. Recuerde que la palabra crédito proviene de “credibilidad”.

No debemos olvidar que todas las grandes empresas en algún momento empezaron siendo pequeñas y, en gran parte, su crecimiento pudo ser posible gracias a una eficiente administración de recursos.

Country, huge island, almost a continent whose territory extends to the Pacific, Indian and Antarctic Oceans. These images reveal its greatness.

Living for a few months in Oceania, a continent far from ours, in an inexplicable experience, especially in a country as fascinating as Australia, with cosmopolitan cities of modern infrastructure, but also with a history which entraps you from the moment you arrive.

Australia is a country which belongs to the British Commonwealth. Its territory includes various regions which one can begin exploring, where you can be sure you will find fabulous things.

Submerging ourselves in the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest reef, knowing the best winemakers and oldest producers in Australia is amazing. In addition, being able to appreciate the ancient indigenous culture with a local aborigine guide is very interesting. La native fauna of the island Kangaroo is fabulous. ¡There is a lot to do and see!

During our route I admired much of a spectacle where illumination was key: the projecting of images on the façade of a cathedral making us relive stories. I witnessed a children’s Christmas story. As spectators we were set up outdoors, since the weather was perfect during this season: December and January are summer months, when we can visit the beaches and perform outdoor activities, such as take an

afternoon or evening stroll enjoying a pleasant environment.

Another place we visited was the Blue Mountains National Park, famous for its waterfalls and a three rock structure, called The Three Sisters, where there is a vantage point for watching the Australian natural diversity, since in this country the vast territory has tundra, jungles, and forests, each environment so different from the other in its vegetation and fauna.

It was surprising to know that along the streets there are signs which read “beware of the kangaroo”, which sounded funny to us as we were not familiar with a message related to these friendly marsupials, so rare in our lands.

In Australia there are several parks where we could appreciate very beautiful animals; for example, koalas and kangaroos. We were very close to them, since feeding them is allowed. In addition, the bigger kangaroos can jump right next to you, and this is a fun experience. Contact with the fauna is constant in this country; for example, the area where we stayed in was visited in the afternoons by birds of an endemic species.

Australia has one of the most beautiful works of architecture in the world, which is the Sydney Opera House. This magnificent building dedicated to culture rises as an Australian icon in one of the country’s most beautiful bays.

The rooftops covered in millions of white and beige tiles make it look like the spectacular sails in the shape of a shell. This wonder of the world was inaugurated in 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II. Durante nuestro recorrido admiré

Los espectadores nos instalamos al aire libre, ya que el clima es perfecto en esta temporada: diciembre y enero son meses de verano, en los que puedes visitar las playas y hacer actividades al aire libre, como dar un paseo por la tarde o noche gozando de un ambiente agradable.

Otro sitio que visitamos fue el parque nacional Blue Mountains, famoso por sus cascadas y una estructura de tres rocas, llamada The Three Sisters, donde hay

un mirador para contemplar la diversidad natural australiana, ya que este país de vasto territorio tiene tundra, selva y bosque, cada medio tan distinto al otro en su vegetación y fauna.

Fue sorprendente saber que en las calles hay letreros con la leyenda “cuidado con el canguro”, que nos pareció gracioso porque no estamos familiarizados con un mensaje relativo a estos simpáticos marsupiales, tan raros en nuestras tierras.

En Australia hay varios parques donde pudimos apreciar a animales muy hermosos; por ejemplo, koalas y canguros. Estuvimos cerca de

ellos, porque está permitido darles de comer. Además, los canguros muy grandes pueden saltar junto a ti y esta es una experiencia divertida. El contacto con la fauna es constante en este país; por ejemplo, el área donde nos hospedamos era visitada en las tardes por unos pájaros de una especie endémica.

País, isla enorme, casi un continente.

Australia cuenta con una de las obras de arquitectura más bellas del mundo, que es la Casa de la Opera en Sydney. Este magnífico edificio dedicado a la cultura se alza como ícono de Australia en una de las bahías más hermosas del país. Nos explicaron que, si observas bien esta construcción emblemática, puedes ver su parecido con un barco navegando. Sus techos cubiertos con millones de azulejos de color blanco y beige se asemejan a unas espectaculares velas en forma de concha.

Esta maravilla del mundo moderno fue inaugurada en 1973 por la Reina Isabel II. De ninguna manera nos perdimos el festejo de año nuevo en la Casa de la Ópera, donde los australianos adornan la bahía con millones de juegos pirotécnicos.

Sydney es una ciudad con alto valor agregado. La vida es cara, pero los sueldos son buenos, en comparación con Nueva York; sin embargo, la gente es más sencilla, sin muchas reglas para vestirse, por lo que las diferencias entre clases sociales no son muy marcadas y todos pueden convivir gracias a su sencillez y calidad humana.

En los últimos cinco años, Australia ha crecido rápidamente y se han construido muchos edificios.

La infraestructura de Sydney es impresionante. Un ejemplo es la zona llamada Darling Harbour.

También es recomendable visitar Manly Beach, donde hay una gran piscina oceánica. También se juega Rugby, el deporte más popular a nivel nacional.

Los invito a visitar Australia. Les aseguro que la pasarán muy bien si van a la hermosa ciudad de Sydney, a las playas, a los parques; además, los atardeceres más bonitos son los que he visto aquí, parecidos a los de nuestra tierra localizada al norte de México y al sur de los Estados Unidos.

Lou Pau Bolaños Leon, 14 years old, stands out in the discipline which he defines as a form of expression and devotion when it’s time to play. “This is a sport which needs agility and strength, I love batting”, expressed the emotional teenager who presently works through his second year of Jr. High School and everyday strives

In 2015 I was designated winner of the prize “Talento Deportivo 2015” (Sports Talent 2015) by the city hall of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua. This is a great merit taking into account that he is the youngest sportsman in this discipline who has been given this important distinction: “It is an honor to be among the best and win. Standing out among the rest excites me and because at the end you realize that the efforts invested were well worth it”.

His parents are, without a doubt,

In his short trajectory, Lou Pau has achieved being the only baseball player who since the age of 10 was selected at national level, with an outstanding participation in seven international championships and two national Olympics: “We have won several tournaments and I have been fortunate in going to competitions in countries like China, Venezuela and Nicaragua; getting along with my teammates, being away and sharing memories is something enjoyable”.

A los dos años tuvo su primer contacto con el bat y la bola; a los tres participó en un torneo, y desde entonces, el beisbol se ha convertido en su pasión.

En su corta trayectoria, Lou Pau consiguió ser el único jugador de beisbol que desde la edad de 10 años es seleccionado nacional, con una destacada participación en siete campeonatos internacionales y dos olimpiadas nacionales: “Hemos ganado varios torneos y he tenido la suerte de acudir a competencias en países como China, Venezuela y Nicaragua; la convivencia con los compañeros, estar fuera y compartir recuerdos es algo muy bonito”.

The establishment of the region of San Elizario goes back to april 30, 1958, when Juan de Oñate and his committe stopped to partake in the “certificate of possession” of New Mexico on the Rio del Norte (Rio Grande) banks. Practicly two centuries after, around 1789, the area was establishing as an agricultural community, from the San Elceario settlement (Catholic Saint of the French soldiers).

The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail, also known as “Camino de la Plata�, it includes five sites already registered on the World Heritage List and 55 more sites, located across 1,400 of the 2,600 kilometers of this route that begins by the Santo Domingo Plaza, in Mexico City, and reaches Texas and New Mexico, U.S.A.

His wish was to become an architect, but destiny led him towards the performing arts; for him, theatre is something marvelous where he experienced everything he had learned about construction.

Gilberto Barraza Garcia began his acting career in Ciudad Juarez 28 years ago, in Octavio Trias’s theatre company, along with recognized play-actors such as Joaquin Cosio and Perla De La Rosa. Together they founded “Alborde Teatro” (Alborde Theatre), a troupe of Juarez actors, and inaugurated the Theater in the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juarez (Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez).

Before the year 2000, Gilberto traveled to Mexico City to become part of the National Theatre Company (Compañía Nacional de Teatro), where he began

actors, among those are Damian Alcazar and Daniel Jimenez Cacho. In addition, he has worked on series and soap operas: “I have been fortunate to appear in good feature films which have difficulty in reaching film listings, because they are catalogued as independent film and are not very commercial”.

In 2015, the Juarez native was awarded as the best Latin American actor in the film “En La Estancia”, during the Gramado Film Festival (Festival de Cinema Gramado) in Brazil. About this, he comments: “It was a gratifying experience, something unexpected”.

The film is a drama genre which revolves around the arrival of a Documentarist to an abandoned town in the state of Guanajuato where, as a consequence of migration, only two inhabitants remain.

Now I am focused on the visual arts, film, television, but theatre is my passion: I was born on a stage, was raised in it; if I stop doing this, I feel bad.”

In Mexico’s capital city, Gilberto discovered professional film. It was here where his perseverance allowed him to become part of important films such as “La Mexicana” (The Mexican), where he acted with personalities like Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts.

He has also made contact with recognized Mexican 48

The film has been presented in several festivals worldwide. “We have been in Washington; we won a award in San Diego, California, for Best Director; we have also presented works in Los Angeles and have been well received by the public”, he proudly expressed.

Though his greatest reward is doing what he loves, he has many good and not so good anecdotes.

One of the last happened when, once, he forgot a line at the moment of filming. The most impacting for him was a very personal experience: his father’s passing.

As an artist, he believes of great importance that his talent should be recognized not only in Mexico, but in other borders, but he also reflects on the need for setting up teams: “I believe good work is being done in this country and it is time for young people to think more about their country; it is time to take advantage of this opportunity for us to be more united, to value the national talent, and exploit it”.

Presently, Gilberto Barraza continues to work in Mexico City, where he participates in a series

called “Falsos Falsificados”, a dark comedy where he plays a hired killer nicknamed “El Rancio”. In addition, he acts in and produces documentary theatre and has a film in mind for next year.

Su deseo era ser arquitecto, pero el destino lo llevó hacia las artes escénicas; para él, el teatro es algo maravilloso donde experimentó lo que había aprendido sobre construcción.

Fue así como su perseverancia le permitió formar parte de importantes filmes como “La Mexicana”, donde actuó con figuras como Brad Pitt y Julia Roberts. También ha hecho contacto con actores mexicanos reconocidos, entre quienes están Damián Alcázar y Daniel Jiménez Cacho. Además, ha trabajado en series y telenovelas: “He tenido la suerte de estar en buenos largometrajes que difícilmente llegan a las carteleras, porque son catalogados como cine independiente y no son muy comerciales”.

En el año 2015, el juarense fue premiado como mejor actor latinoamericano por la cinta “En la Estancia”, durante el Festival de Cinema Gramado, en Brasil.

Sobre esto, dice: “Fue una experiencia muy gratificante, algo inesperado”. La obra es un drama que gira en torno a la llegada de

un documentalista a un pueblo abandonado en el estado de Guanajuato donde, como consecuencia de la migración, solo quedan dos habitantes.

La película se ha presentado en diversos festivales a nivel mundial.

“Hemos estado en Washington; ganamos un premio en San Diego, California, por mejor dirección; también hemos presentado trabajos en Los Ángeles y han sido muy bien recibidos por el púbico”, expresa orgulloso.

Aunque su mayor premio es estar haciendo lo que le gusta, tiene muchas anécdotas buenas

y otras no tanto. Una de las últimas ocurrió cuando, una vez, olvidó un diálogo al momento de la filmación. La más impactante para él fue una experiencia muy personal: el fallecimiento de su padre.

Como artista, piensa que es de suma importancia que su talento sea reconocido no solo en México, sino en otras fronteras, pero reflexiona sobre la necedad de hacer equipo: “Creo que en este país se están haciendo buenos trabajos y es tiempo de que los jóvenes piensen más en su país; es momento de aprovechar esta oportunidad para ser más unidos, 51

para valorar el talento nacional, y exportarlo”.

Actualmente, Gilberto Barraza sigue radicando en la Ciudad de México, donde trabaja en una serie llamada “Falsos falsificados”, una comedia oscura donde interpreta a un asesino a sueldo apodado “El Rancio”. Además, hace y produce teatro documental y tiene proyectada una película para el próximo año.

Cardiac disease is the principal cause of death among Hispanic women.

The American Heart Association carried out the “Vestido Rojo” (Red Dress) event, a community health conference taking place in the Camino Real Hotel in El Paso, Texas.

Health exams were performed and educational sessions were offered with featured exhibitors.

Red Dress is an initiative, wholeheartedly, celebrated in conjunction with “Go Red Por Tu Corazon” (Go Red For Your Heart), a national movement of the American Heart Association which celebrates the energy, passion and power of Hispanic women to unite and eradicate cardiac diseases.

The event would not be possible without the “Madrinas” (Godmothers / Maids of Honor): who become ambassadors of health for their families, friends and community.

This event is organized for Providence Hospitals and supported by the Center for Health Sciences from Texas Tech University of El Paso; likewise, is sponsored by “City Goes”, Red of the American Heart Association.

La enfermedad cardiaca es la principal causa de muerte en las mujeres hispanas.

La Asociación Americana del Corazón llevó a cabo el evento “Vestido Rojo”, una conferencia de salud comunitaria realizada en el Hotel Camino Real de El Paso, Texas.

Se practicaron exámenes de salud y se ofrecieron sesiones educativas con destacados expositores.

Vestido Rojo es una iniciativa, de todo corazón, celebrada en conjunto con “Go Red Por Tu Corazón”, un movimiento nacional de la Asociación Americana del Corazón que celebra la energía, la pasión y el poder de las mujeres hispanas para unirse y erradicar las enfermedades cardiacas.

HORACIO FRANCO Nobody imposed a model to

follow. He was eleven years old and knew what he was born into: music. Thanks to his talent, today he is considered one of Mexico’s best exponents of the recorder, although he also plays other kinds of flutes and instruments like the harpsichord.

From boy to nightingale Horacio Franco was born in the country’s capital in the decade of the sixties, when the rock and roll was very popular among the young population. His taste for music originated in Jr. High School, when he was given a flute as a school instrument. One day, he listened to a girl in his classroom play a piece by Mozart on the piano and Horacio’s life was transformed.

“I realized that I had so much talent and ease for playing tunes by listening to them”, the extroverted orchestra director proudly expressed, who at an early age entered the musical conservatory unbeknownst to his parents: “At that time there was no degree for the recorder in Mexico. It had been introduced by the Secretariat of Public Education (Secretaria de Educación Pública (SEP)) during the decade of the seventies since it was copied from a Nazi model.

It was during Hitler’s time when it was introduced, with very good results, the recorder in Germany, for being considered a folkloric instrument.”

At 16 years old he was named Maestro in the National Conservatory in Mexico (Conservatorio Nacional de México), where he continued to implement a methodology, 59

although lacking in the necessary basics: “Classical music strongly needs an induction by someone, since it is a scholarly kind of music.

The most popular is the most difficult, but needs basics. For classical music one cannot be self-taught”. This happened because in the conservatory the degree for the flute did not exist and there were no professors to teach him; Franco did not lose courage, so he studied the violin and other instruments: “But thanks to this I learned. I was self-taught until I was able to travel to Holland, where I learned quickly not only for having the best teacher or pedagogue, but also since I studied at the conservatory in Amsterdam, a rigorous school and with an impressive competition: I had classmates who were geniuses, reason for which I studied harder. Being consistent with a

In his tours through Europe, Asia, the United States, South America and Israel he has taught numerous master classes; in England, the United States and Mexico he has participated in educational and support projects for sectors marginalized and vulnerable in society.

Recently, he came to Ciudad Juarez to offer the concert “Bach, Danzones, Beatles and others”, accompanied by bass guitarist Victor Flores, in a presentation sponsored by the Civic Center of Smart Foundation (Centro Cívico de la Fundación Smart).

Franco offers a range of 150 concerts a year, which include classical, popular and traditional music.

He attends, in the same manner, presentations in famous concert

halls and in schools or public plazas. As a musician, he believes he has the power to reach out to every public and classical music can sell as much as Shakira or artists of other genres, but one must know how to present it to the young crowd.

With a musical trajectory of almost 40 years, the award-winning artist still has much to offer. His positive and open encouragement, in addition to his muscular body and bold attire, which appears eccentric to many, allow for Horacio Franco’s presence to spread energy and confidence.

Franco defines music as the most original art; in a word: it is emotion. His recommendations or keys to success for those who want to become artists: be sure you, truly have, talent and want to fully devote yourself to your vocation because it fascinates you. ¡A long life, Horacio Franco; come back soon!

De niño a ruiseñor Horacio Franco nació en la capital del país en la década de los años sesenta, cuando el rock and roll era muy popular entre la población juvenil. Su gusto por la música se originó en la secundaria, cuando se le dio una flauta como instrumento escolar.

Algún día, escuchó a una chica de su salón tocar en el piano una obra de Mozart y la vida de Horacio se transformó.

“Me di cuenta de que tenía muchísimo talento y facilidad para sacar las piezas de oído”, expresa orgulloso este extrovertido director de orquesta, quien a temprana edad entró al conservatorio de música a escondidas de sus padres: “En aquel tiempo no había carrera de flauta de pico en México. Había sido introducida por la Secretaria de Educación Pública (SEP), en la educación secundaria, durante la década de los setenta porque copiaron el modelo nazi. Fue en la época de Hitler cuando se introdujo, con muy buenos resultados, la flauta de pico en Alemania, por ser considerada instrumento folklórico.”

“Hay que sacar la música clásica a las calles” necesarias: “La música clásica necesita forzosamente una inducción de alguien, porque es una música muy escolarizada. Lo popular es lo menos difícil, pero necesita bases. Para la música clásica no funciona ser autodidacta”. Esto sucedió porque en el conservatorio no existía la carrera de flauta y no había maestros que la enseñaran; Franco no se desanimó, así que estudió violín y otros instrumentos: “Pero gracias a eso aprendí. Fui autodidacta hasta que pude irme a Holanda, donde caí en blandito no solo por tener al mejor maestro o mejor pedagogo, sino porque estudié en el conservatorio de Amsterdam, una escuela con rigor y con una competencia impresionante: tenía compañeros que eran unas lumbreras, por lo cual trabajé mucho. Ser constante con una metodología fundamentada precisamente, fue lo que en México me faltó”.

MAKING HISTORY BY BECOMING STATE CHAMPIONS Texas Christian Athletic League (TCAL) is the organization with which our representative teams of basketball, both male and female, made the cut, making history by becoming state champions in category 2A. The men’s team defeated San Antonio Athlos in the first game, with a 78-28 marker, to advance to an early final where they defeated state number one Marshall Christian School 45-50.

In the championship game they defeated by score of 46-61 to Houston Texas Christian. Jaron Masis, originally from Costa Rica, and Darwin Jones from Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, were honored as part of the ideal team; In addition, Angel Wong, a native of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, went down in history being the most valuable player.

“Becoming a good violinist is easy, if you can sit and practice from five to eight hours daily”, Roberto Jurado expressed, with ironic humor, but holding to reality, aspiring to become a large figure in music.

His story with the world of harmony began when he was four years old. He always had the idea of directing an orchestra or music-concerto and, as time went by, he had the opportunity to play the violin.

In 2002, he began his artistic education in the string workshops in the Autonomous University of

Ciudad Juarez (Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez) with Guadalupe Esparza teaching. With a career spanning 15 years, his talent is recognized, as he is considered one of the best violinists in the country’s north. “One should never believe they know everything because one will never finish their repertoire which is written for an instrument; there will always be something new to learn and if we are lifelong students in our minds, only then I believe this is how we are able to become better and go anywhere we want.”

For Jurado, one must be competitive in their chosen profession 76

Presently, Roberto, with a Degree in Music, is the only concertmaster in the state of Chihuahua who is part of the Stage Creators Program (Programa de Creadores Escenicos) for the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) (National Fund for Culture and the Arts), an opportunity which fills him with pride and is gratifying in his career, since it has given him national prestige.

His goal is to cover a strong field as orchestra director, and though he works hard to achieve it (he rehearses at least five hours a day), he expresses: “you have to be married to your art and the instrument is very jealous: if you leave it for a day, it feels like you have not played for a month. It requires much education, commitment and curiosity to continue advancing”.

This extraordinary violinist has played in various parts of the country, United States and Eu-

It is a funny thing, he says, but he carries his violin everywhere he goes: an ever-present companion in his travels, even when going to a shopping mall. He has learned to coexist all day with it: “I treat it as a son, with every care: I maintain it; if anything should happen to my instrument, it is as if my soul would shatter”.

Though he has a captive audience, this great musician from Juarez believes that his time for exploring beyond Mexico has 77

Pero, ¿qué le hace falta a Roberto Jurado para llegar al nivel más alto? Él mismo lo explica: “Primeramente, seguir aprendiendo y conociendo músicos extraordinarios. Es importante poder salir de la frontera, visitar otros horizontes para que te conozcan y, sobre todo, tener una disciplina muy barda, creo que esa va a ser la clave para poder llegar a las grandes ligas musicales a través de mérito y esfuerzo”.

En el marco del Día Internacional de la Mujer, se realizó la Cuarta Magna Conferencia 2017, organizada por el grupo “Mujeres

Visionarias”, una asociación que basa sus principios en el amor de Dios, la amistad, la comprensión, el cariño, la confidencialidad y el respeto.

Como invitada especial, la cantante María del Sol, impartió la conferencia “Atrévete, mujer”, con un mensaje emotivo en el que enalteció el valor del género femenino y lo hermoso de su ser a los ojos de Dios. Sus palabras, 87

inspiradas en experiencias de vida, lograron tocar fibras sensibles que hicieron llorar a más de una.
