ith great satisfaction, we present you with your magazine, issue 16. A very special one for us because the image of the front page is a beautiful piece of the artist and sculptor Sebastián: The “Rosa del Desierto.” Its meaning is strongly linked to the people of our border region and, in particular, to the spirit that predominates in Border Heritage: The wonderful possibility of not only surviving but flourishing in a complex environment. In the present edition, we will know more about this dream that we saw crystallize in the middle of the spring.

For the Art and Culture segment, we review the Nuevo Siglo Festival where we appreciate the talent of the different companies of drama theater of international stature, celebrated in the auditorium of the National Park of El Chamizal.

Para el segmento de arte y cultura, reseñamos el Festival Nuevo Siglo donde apreciamos el talento de las diferentes compañías de teatro dramático de talla internacional, organizado en el auditorio del Parque Nacional de El Chamizal.

We will meet Valeria Mendizábal, a young member of the golf team of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), who tells us about her most recent successes. Another exemplary woman is Rosa Guerrero, renowned for her tireless work in the promotion of Mexican culture in the United States.

In addition, we travel to Ireland, a country with incredible places whose capital you must walk under the sole empire of spontaneity, in order to appreciate its local flavor and capture it in your memory.

Además, viajamos hasta Irlanda, un país con lugares increíbles cuya capital debe caminarse bajo el único imperio de la espontaneidad, para así poder apreciar su sabor local y capturarlo en nuestra memoria.

Among the most outstanding events, I commented that we were in the city of San Elizario, where it took place the “27th Annual History Conference and Gala Dinner.” This is a great opportunity to appreciate and enjoy our heritage. We also witnessed the commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the oldest parishes in the metropolitan area of El Paso-Ciudad Juárez.

Entre los eventos más destacados, les comento que estuvimos en la ciudad de San Elizario, donde tuvo lugar la “27ava. Conferencia de Historia Anual y Cena de Gala”. Esta es una gran oportunidad para apreciar y disfrutar nuestra herencia. Asimismo, fuimos testigos de la conmemoración del 125 aniversario de las parroquias más antiguas de la zona metropolitana de El Paso-Ciudad Juárez.

Alongthe Camino Real Sixth Part

I

n the last issue, Governor Don Juan de Oñate and his expedition arrived in the area now known as San Elizario, TX, where they met the Rio Bravo or Rio del Norte, now known as the Rio Grande, on April 30, 1598. Here, Governor Oñate took possession of all the kingdoms and provinces of New Mexico in the name of God and King. They celebrated with a mass and a play written by Farfan.

On May 1, 1598, the 3-mile by 3-mile expedition moved up the river and on May 3, they met the first natives. The members of the expedition clothed the natives and asked them to bring others. On May 4th they crossed the river at what they named Los Puertos. Forty of the natives went to the river and helped them cross the sheep.

May proved to be a very difficult month compared to the previous months. Their journey began to take them through more difficult weather and terrain. Many of their carts broke due to the thick mud along the route during times of rain.

n la última edición, el gobernador don Juan de Oñate y su expedición habían llegado el 30 de abril de 1598 al área conocida hoy como San Elizario, donde se encontraron frente al Río Bravo o Río del Norte, llamado ahora Río Grande. Ahí, Oñate tomó posesión de los reinos y las provincias de Nuevo México en el nombre de Dios y del Rey; para esto, celebró con una misa y la puesta en escena de una comedia escrita por Farfán.

El 1º. de mayo de 1598 la expedición, que medía 3 millas por 3 millas, se movió río arriba y, el día 3, se encontró con los primeros nativos, a quienes vistieron porque no traían ropa y les solicitaron que fueran por sus amigos para llevarlos a visitar el campamento. El 4 de mayo cruzaron el río y le llamaron al cruce Los Puertos. Cuarenta nativos llegaron para ayudarles a cruzar los borregos.

Mayo fue el mes más difícil que habían tenido. La jornada los llevó por tierras difíciles de caminar y con climas volubles.

Muchas de las carretas se quebraron por el lodo en que se atascaban cuando llovía; además, los pases chicos y caminos peligrosos también las dañaron.

Look for it in early 2018. The references in his book are from the archival material from the expedition by Gaspar Perez de Villagra, 1598.

The small passes and rough roads led to more damage on the carts. They continued up the river until they decided to leave the river to their left and Sierra del Olvido on their right. This narrow route caused the expedition to be divided in half. They began to lose oxen. A child died and was buried. Two horses drowned in the Rio del Norte. One of the men perished and he was buried.

On May 22, Governor Oñate, Fray Cristóbal de Salazar, the sargento mayor and the maese de campo set out for the settlements they believed to be 22 leagues away to get provisions and let the natives know that the rest of the expedition was coming and large. They did not want to frighten or excite them.

The expedition spent the night without water. Although they traveled on the east side of the river and moved northeast, there was no water to be had. The river was difficult to approach because it was rough and the rocks were jagged. The horses, their drivers, and the expedition almost perished of thirst. A dog appeared with muddy paws, which proved there was water close by. Two water holes were found fairly close to the river.

They suffered a great deal because they did not know the route and how to prepare for it.

Mass was celebrated on the 28 and all took communion in order to enter the first settlements. They camped across from the second pueblo they came to, called Qualacu. The natives were suspicious and decided to abandon their pueblo. The expedition assured them with gifts of trinkets. The decision was made to set up camp at the bank of the river and remain there for a month to prove they came in peace.

Continuaron al norte siguiendo el río hasta que decidieron dejarlo a su izquierda, teniendo la Sierra del Olvido del lado derecho, pero la angosta ruta causó que la expedición se dividiera en dos. El resultado no fue muy alentador: se perdieron bueyes, dos caballos se ahogaron y, tristemente, un niño y un hombre fallecieron y ambos fueron enterrados.

El gobernador Oñate, Fray Cristóbal, el sargento mayor y el maese de campo salieron a buscar provisiones en los pueblos que, según calculaban, estaban ubicados a unas 22 leguas.

También querían hablar con los nativos, para que no se asustaran, y avisarles que iban con una expedición grande.

La expedición pasó la noche sin agua. Aunque caminaban a lo largo del lado este del río y avanzaban al noreste, no podían ir por agua porque la corriente era peligrosa y las rocas muy dentadas y afiladas. Los caballos, sus arriadores y la expedición casi morían de sed cuando un perro llegó con las patas enlodadas; así supieron que había agua en un lugar cercano y accesible. Por suerte, encontraron dos pozos cercanos al río.

Sufrieron bastante porque no conocían la ruta y no sabían cómo preparase para esta parte de la jornada.

Una misa se celebró el 28 de mayo y todos comulgaron para prepararse a entrar a los pueblos. Pusieron su campamento al otro lado del segundo pueblo, denominado Qualacu. Los nativos, suspicaces, prefirieron abandonar su pueblo y los expedicionarios los aseguraron con regalos. Oñate decidió instalar el campamento a la orilla del río y permanecer ahí un mes, para probar que venían en paz.

“De mis padres heredé el folclor, la música y el amor por la cultura azteca”

osa Ramírez Guerrero is an example of life for her tirelessly work in the promotion of the Mexican culture in the United States.

This 83-year-old woman, born in El Paso, Texas, of Mexican descent, has earned several awards in Mexico and the United States. She is grateful for the awards, but more for the gift that God gave her: To be a means to educate and teach children and adults the various artistic disciplines through dance and music, as well as the promotion of values.

Her early love shows that Rosa has danced through the path of life: She danced her first waltz when she was 3 years old and at the age of 5 she started to mastering double steps, waltzes, polkas, modern dances, regional Mexican dances, danzón, and flamenco.

This vocation led her to found the International Folklorico Dance Group and to be distinguished by the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame. She is also the first Hispanic woman to baptize with her name a public primary school in the city of El Paso. If it was not enough, the Consulate of México awarded her the OHTLI (“pathway”, or camino, in Spanish) award for her work in favor of Mexican communities in the United States.

In the family of this renowned activist, the dance has a primordial role. Since she married Sergio Salvador Guerrero -RIP-; both danced for 62 years, promoting the culture in diverse social, educational and religious scenes. As you can guess, Rosa’s children follow in her footsteps.

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), El Paso Community College (EPCC), El Paso Independent School (EPISD), the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and other government entities recognize Rosa Ramírez Guerrero as a promoter of multiculturalism among the Latino community, which in turn brings peace and love to the public in each representation.

osa Ramírez Guerrero es un ejemplo de vida por su incansable labor en la promoción de la cultura mexicana en los Estados Unidos.

Esta mujer de 83 años, nacida en El Paso, Texas, y de ascendencia mexicana, se ha hecho merecedora de múltiples reconocimientos en México y Estados Unidos.

Está agradecida por los galardones, pero más por el don que Dios le dio: ser un medio al educar y enseñar a niños y adultos las diversas disciplinas artísticas a través del baile y la música, además de la promoción de valores.

Su temprana afición nos demuestra que Rosa ha danzado a través del camino de la vida: su primer vals lo bailó cuando tenía 3 años y a los 5 empezó a dominar pasos dobles, valses, polkas, danza moderna, bailes regionales mexicanos, danzón y flamenco.

La vocación la llevó a fundar el Grupo Internacional de Baile Folclórico y a ser distinguida por el Texas Women´s Hall of Fame.

También es la primera mujer hispana en bautizar con su nombre a una escuela primaria de gobierno en la ciudad de El Paso. Si fuera poco, el Consulado de México le otorgó el premio OHTLI por su labor en favor de las comunidades mexicanas en Estados Unidos.

En la familia de esta reconocida activista el baile tiene un papel primordial, pues se casó con Sergio Salvador Guerrero ―QEPD― y bailaron durante 62 años, promoviendo la cultura en diversos escenarios sociales, educativos y religiosos. Como podrán adivinar, los hijos de Rosa siguen sus pasos.

This country might be discovered through spontaneity: from improvisations comes the best memories. And if that is not enough, the words of a great Irish writer, Joyce on his book dedicated to Dublin, invites us to get out of our home in search for adventures… and he is right.

i tu pasión por viajar te lleva a Irlanda, deberás dejar a un lado cualquier idea de seguir un itinerario.

Este país se descubre mediante la espontaneidad: de la improvisación nacen los mejores recuerdos.

Por si fuera poco, las palabras de un gran escritor irlandés, Joyce, en su libro dedicado a Dublín, nos invitan a salir de casa para buscar aventuras… y tiene razón.

Recently, I spend four days in South Ireland, where I met with my oldest son, who is serving in the ARMY and lives in Italy with his wife and kids. It was a short travel, for sure, but with the purposes to spend some time together before he deploys to middle East.

We decide we will meet in Dublin, where we walk the streets of the Temple Bar Square, still wet from the drizzle. This cultural zone is Down Town, right at the Liffey river bank and it is full of history and life. The welcoming atmosphere involves you easily. The colorful Victorian houses from other areas in Dublin, contribute to make this effect, and it made us feel comfortable without even thinking. Dublin invites you walk its streets, there is no doubt.

Irish people are authentic and friendly. Through all our journey we enjoyed delicious food and we were captivated by live pyromancers musicians, so joyful as the beer aroma that came out of all the famous pubs.

Kilkenny, Blarney Castle and Killarney are great day excursions that allows you to time travel to the Medieval age. It is worth mentioning that Kilkenny, located near Ireland, is known as the Marble City, because many of its medieval buildings are built from this stone, that is abundant in color black. We could see the rustic towns and remains of castles surrounded by idyllic landscapes, where past and present collides in a gift to our eyes. That is how we end our trip: enchanted by Ireland.

Recientemente, pasé cuatro días en Irlanda del Sur, donde me encontré con mi hijo mayor, quien está sirviendo en el ejército y vive en Italia con su esposa e hijos. Un viaje relámpago, sin duda, pero con el propósito de convivir con él y su familia, antes de que regresara a trabajar en Medio Oriente.

Decidimos encontrarnos en Dublín, donde caminamos por las calles de Temple Bar Square, todavía mojadas por una llovizna intermitente. Esta es una zona cultural situada en el centro de la ciudad, en las orillas del río Liffey, llena de historia y actividad a la vez. En el ambiente acogedor es fácil dejarse envolver. También, las casas victorianas pintadas de colores en otras zonas de la ciudad contribuyen a lograr este efecto, a hacernos sentir cómodos sin siquiera pensarlo. Dublín invita a caminar por sus calles, de esto no hay duda.

La gente de Irlanda es auténtica y amigable. Por si fuera poco, a lo largo de nuestro viaje disfrutamos de deliciosa comida en todas partes y fuimos cautivados por la música en vivo que resonaba en cualquier esquina, agradable como el olor a cerveza proveniente de los alegres y famosos pubs.

Kilkenny, Blarney Castle y Killarney son excelentes excursiones de día que permiten viajar en el tiempo, hacia la época medieval. Vale la pena mencionar que Kilkenny, situada a menos de una hora de Irlanda, es conocida como la la Ciudad de Mármol porque muchos de sus edificios medievales están construidos con esta piedra, que abunda en color negro. Pudimos apreciar también pueblos rústicos y restos de castillos rodeados por un paisaje idílico, donde pasado y presente se funden en un regalo para nuestros ojos. Así terminamos el viaje: encantados por Irlanda.

his year, the 2018 Women in Business Conference brought together a large number of successful ladies in various business areas to share their achievements and experiences.

a Conferencia de Mujeres de Negocios 2018 congregó este año a un nutrido número de damas exitosas en diversas áreas empresariales, para compartir sus logros y experiencias.

One of the approaches of this summit was to offer tools of empowerment and union among women for leadership management; they were also oriented to be competitive in the business community.

Uno de los enfoques fue ofrecer herramientas de empoderamiento y unión entre mujeres para el manejo del liderazgo; también se les orientó para ser competitivas en la comunidad empresarial.

The event featured Kate White, author of best-sellers of the New York Times and former editor in chief of the magazine Cosmopolitan. It also included leading exhibitors, such as El Paso’s first lady, Adair Margo, founder of the Tom Lea Cultural Institute.

El evento contó con la figura estelar de Kate White, autora de best-sellers del New York Times y ex editora en jefe de la revista Cosmopolitan. Incluyó además a destacadas expositoras, como la primera dama de El Paso, Adair Margo, fundadora del Instituto Cultural Tom Lea.

Among the dynamics, a “Circle of Power” was organized, in order to the attendees received advice from women leaders in their field and participated in a contest called “Biz Tank”, where entrepreneurs who aspire to grow their business participated.

Entre las dinámicas, se organizó un “círculo de poder” donde las asistentes recibieron consejos de mujeres líderes y participaron en un concurso denominado “Biz Tank”, donde emprendedoras compiten para hacer crecer su negocio.

The event was closed by Congressman Will Hurd, who stressed that women have overcome many obstacles to demonstrate their power in business. For this reason, their leadership represent a great economic influence in Texas and throughout the country.

El cierre del evento estuvo a cargo del congresista Will Hurd, quien destacó que las mujeres han sabido superar muchos obstáculos para demostrar su poderío en los negocios, por tal motivo su liderazgo representa una gran influencia económica en Texas y en todo el país.

The richness of the language and current issues to this day were once again exhibited through the works of internationally recognized classical playwrights from Madrid, Yucatán, and Mexico City, as well as a production from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. They were in charge of director Perla de la Rosa.

La riqueza del lenguaje y temas siempre vigentes fueron expuestos una vez más a través de las obras de dramaturgos clásicos reconocidos a nivel internacional, de Madrid, Yucatán y Ciudad de México, además de un montaje producido en Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. ccording to the development director of the Villalobos & Moore law firm, Benjamin Magadán Beall, US companies seeking people with skills and experience can obtain a legal permanent residence visa for foreign workers. The process is complex and includes a certification process before the United States Department of Labor.

The process called PERM (Permanent Electronic Review Management) is a system used to certify certain jobs and positions of foreigners hired by companies established in the United States.

“The certification of the Department of Labor establishes that the foreign worker does not displace the work of a US citizen or a legal permanent resident,” explains Magadán.

Among the requirements that a candidate must meet are not having violated immigration laws, have no criminal record and meet academic requirements or have experience and ability to perform the work requested by the company.

The first step is to request the certification before the Department of Labor. You have to set the regulation, requirements and base salary. The costs of this first step have to be covered by the applicant´s company.

The second step, once the Department of Labor certifies the prospective employee, is to request a petition for a foreign worker from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). It can include the beneficiary’s spouse and children under 21 years of age. Upon receiving approval of the petition, the worker may submit an adjustment process within the United States, or choose to go to the consulate of their country to receive the legal permanent residence visa.

The estimated time of the procedure is 12 to 18 months, but it may be less if the worker is in the country and has a temporary work visa.

El proceso denominado PERM, (Permanent Electronic Review Management, por sus siglas en inglés) es un sistema utilizado para certificar ciertos empleos y posiciones de extranjeros contratados por compañías establecidas en Estados Unidos. “La certificación del Departamento de Labor establece que el trabajador extranjero no desplazará el trabajo de un ciudadano norteamericano o de un residente permanente legal”, explica el licenciado Magadán.

Entre los requisitos que debe cumplir un candidato, están no haber violentado las leyes migratorias, no tener antecedentes criminales y cumplir con los requerimientos académicos o contar con experiencia y habilidad para desempeñar el trabajo solicitado por la empresa.

El primer paso es solicitar la petición de certificación ante el Departamento de Labor. Se tiene que fijar la regulación, requisitos y salario base. Los costos de este primer paso tienen que ser cubiertos por la empresa solicitante.

El segundo paso, una vez que el Departamento de Labor certifique al futuro empleado, es solicitar una petición para un trabajador extranjero ante El Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS, por sus siglas en inglés). Se puede incluir al cónyuge del beneficiario y a los hijos menores de 21 años. Al momento de recibir la aprobación de la petición, el trabajador puede someter un proceso de ajuste dentro de los Estados Unidos, u optar por ir al consulado de su país a recibir la visa de residencia permanente legal.

El tiempo estimado del trámite es de 12 a 18 meses, pero puede ser menor si el trabajador está en el país y posee una visa temporal de trabajo.

ancho Los Amigos, in El Paso, Texas, was the lounge venue for the spectators of the Polo Real 2018. In its fourth edition, this event gathered hundreds of guests in a sophisticated celebration to share moments of joy, but above all, of support for noble causes, this time for the benefit of the El Paso Museum of History.

Music, food, and glamour were elements that enhanced the organization of the so-called “Sport of Kings,” which this year pays homage to Dede Rogers, the founding of the Hunt family, as well as Ernesto and Nora Herrera, founders of The Herrera Group, important local personalities dedicated to philanthropy.

This celebration, impregnated with color and elegance, had its exciting moment during the match between the “Herrera Group” and the “Dede Rogers” team, where both groups of warriors applied their best strategy and agility to offer a great equestrian show.

And, as is the tradition, at the end of the match, the guests crossed in the green field to take pictures with horses and riders, while tasting exquisite and cold champagne.

There is no doubt that year after year, Polo Real, becomes relevant in the border community; since its creation in 2012 to date, it adds to the history of this fine sport in the region, thanks to the enthusiasm of assistants and sponsors.

outhwest University, Border Heritage Magazine, and the Sebastian Foundation came together to deliver the first edition of the “Rosa del Desierto” award, which, as of this year, is institutionalized as a symbol of regional pride to pay tribute to prominent figures from the community.

For this reason, more than 200 guests attended the special gala at the facilities of Southwest University Diesel Shop, to witness the recognition of the work of three people: The Chihuahuan poet Enrique Cortázar, the businessman Fred Loya, and Dr. Roberto Canales. They have made valuable contributions in the cultural promotion, economic development, and healthcare, respectively.

Carmen Becerra, director of Border Heritage magazine; Yolanda Arreola, CEO of Southwest University; and the Chihuahuan sculptor, Sebastian, agreed on the importance of praising the outstanding career and the roots of these community leaders.

he vision of the marriage formed by Kaleb and Patricia Warnock is unlimited. In a very short time, they have achieved what many would dream of: To own their own business. This was possible by purchasing one of the favorite franchises of lovers of good food: Tropical Smoothie Café, specialist since 20 years ago in fruit and vegetable smoothies with a distinctive flavor.

The beginning was not an easy one; even, a first experiment did not work, but they risked again.

Without having tasted the product, they decided to settle in El Paso, Texas, with Tropical Smoothie Café. “We went to a training in Las Vegas and when we tried the product we fell in love with it,” 62

That’s how they grew as entrepreneurs: In two years, they already have three branches of the new brand, whose slogan ‘Eat better, feel better’ has been very well-received by the public.

“We are creating awareness in young people so that they can nourish themselves better and share this idea with others: The food has many colors, vitamins and a taste that is not common,” says Patricia, who thanks the community of Pasaña for exceeding their expectations.

The combination of fresh ingredients in drinks and food, like toasted wraps, sandwiches, flatbreads, bowls with meats and quality cheeses, create a very striking style, in addition to the best: A relaxed atmosphere and hospitality are breathed when entering all its premises.

With her little son and another one to be born, Patricia and Kaleb live their dream to have undertaken an adventure that is the starting point of other projects, which will be built thanks to the desire to succeed, perseverance and a lot of faith.

n four days, almost twenty speakers of various public and private cultural organizations shared their knowledge about past and recent history of the existing connections of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, considered Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

During the Rio Grande Festival celebration, it took place the 27th. Annual Conference of History and the Gala, organized by San Elizario Genealogy & Historical Society. In this conference matters of great interest were addressed, like the binational project tending towards the UNESCO nomination: Tierra Adentro in the North.

urante cuatro días, cerca de una veintena de ponentes de diversas organizaciones culturales, gubernamentales y civiles compartieron sus conocimientos históricos y de actualidad sobre las conexiones existentes del Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, considerado Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad.

Durante la celebración del Festival Río Grande, tuvo lugar la “27ava. Conferencia de Historia Anual y Cena de Gala”, organizada por San Elizario Genealogy & Historical Society. En ella se abordaron temas de gran interés, como el proyecto binacional tendiente a la nominación de la UNESCO: Tierra Adentro en el Septentrión.

Al Borrego destacó la importancia de avanzar juntos en este proyecto que traerá enormes beneficios a las comunidades de ambos países. Y es que el objetivo trazado, explicó el presidente de SEGHS, es promover la identidad, esencia de lo que conforma el patrimonio cultural.

Besides the conferences given by the staff of the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia (INAH), and by experts of our cultural patrimony, assistants enjoyed the evening listening to Spanish and Mariachi Music and admire the beauty of dances of the Classic Ballet Company of the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez.

Además de las conferencias impartidas por funcionarios del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia y expertos del patrimonio cultural, los asistentes disfrutaron una velada animada por la compañía Clásica de Ballet de la UACJ y grupos de música española y mariachi.

Young promise of the Golf 70

D

iscipline, sacrifice, and concentration have been the values that have given strength and solidity to Valeria Mendizábal, a young golf promise who dreams of competing in major international tournaments.

She is 18 years old, originally from Guatemala, and currently a student of Industrial Engineering and member of the golf team of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). She recently took second place in the most important tournament of the year: The “Conference USA.” Valeria’s passion for golf was inspired by her father, who took her to the country club when she was a girl and he used to go there to play with his friends. However, her professional incursion began up until 2012 and since then she has competed with renowned golfers from different countries.

At her young age, she has obtained important triumphs outside of his native Guatemala, such as the Central American International Tournament in its juvenile and adult versions.

It has also achieved victories in tournaments held in Colombia and Germany and is currently ranked first in the Central America and Caribbean region.

After talking with Valeria, who posses a simple personality and friendly character, we see her going out to the Coronado Country Club golf course, located west of El Paso.

Before leaving, she shares a message for those who are starting in this challenging sport: “If you like golf, no matter how good or bad you are at the beginning, you just have to work hard and with discipline. The sacrifices are worth it and, with a lot of practice, you will soon see the results.”

isciplina, sacrificio y concentración han sido los valores que le han dado fortaleza y solidez a Valeria Mendizábal, joven promesa del golf que sueña competir en grandes torneos internacionales.

De 18 años, originaria de Guatemala y actualmente estudiante de Ingeniería Industrial e integrante del equipo de golf de la Universidad de Texas en El Paso (UTEP), recientemente obtuvo el segundo lugar en el torneo más importante del año: “Conference US”.

La afición de Valeria por el golf fue inspirada por su padre, quien la llevaba al campo cuando era niña y él iba a jugar con 71 sus amigos.

“I am happy, very proud to belong to my new team and to study at UTEP.” Sin embargo, su incursión profesional comenzó en 2012 y desde entonces ha competido con reconocidos golfistas de diferentes países.

Después de platicar con Valeria, de personalidad sencilla y carácter amigable, la vemos salir al campo de golf de Coronado Country Club, ubicado al oeste de El Paso.

A su corta edad ha obtenido triunfos importantes fuera de su natal Guatemala, como el Torneo internacional Centroamericano en sus versiones juvenil y adulta. También ha alcanzado victorias en torneos celebrados en Colombia y Alemania, y actualmente está clasificada en el primer lugar en la región de Centroamérica y el Caribe.

Antes de despedirnos, deja un mensaje para quienes se inician en este desafiante deporte: “Si les gusta el golf no importa qué tan buenos o malos sean al principio, solo hay que trabajar duro y con disciplina. Los sacrificios valen la pena y con mucha práctica pronto verán los resultados”.

ith a series of liturgical events, sports, and recognition to those who have served and contribute to the religious community development, Jesuits Priest of the churches of Sacred Heart and Immaculate Conception gave green light to the festivities that celebrate the 125th anniversary of both parishes.

One of the main events of this celebration was an award presentation to Salvador Balcorta, Executive director of Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe, for his tireless work towards the struggling families. He was recognized as “2018 Father Rahm Segundo Barrio Person of the Year”, an award that is given by the Sacred Heart Church.

Father Ron Gonzalez, the priest of the first Jesuit church on the border region, showed his gratitude for all the support that for almost 25 years has been given to the community in the matter of health, education, and values.

Mark J. Seitz, Bishop of El Paso Diocese, as well as Major Donald “Dee” Margo, and other personalities join the Catholic parishioners in the celebrities where mariachi music and commemorative parade were part of the festivities. May this work that contributes to bringing our family and nations together through hope last many more years!

El Padre Ron González, párroco de la primera iglesia jesuita de la región fronteriza, mostró su gratitud por el apoyo que desde hace 25 años brinda a la comunidad en materia de salud, educación y promoción de valores.

El obispo de la diócesis de El Paso, Mark J.
