We receive the year with a very representative cover because it shows us an identity encounter where the joy that fills the hearts at the rhythm of the ritual is shared: the Pow Wow celebration. In addition to this tradition, we have traveled to the state of Veracruz to learn about “cartonería”, an art created not to last but whose heritage continues to be nourished.

Recibimos el año con una portada muy representativa, pues nos ilustra sobre un encuentro de identidad donde se comparte la alegría que llena los corazones al ritmo del ritual: la celebración del Pow Wow. Además de esta tradición, nos hemos trasladado al estado de Veracruz para conocer la cartonería, un arte creado para no durar, pero cuya herencia continúa nutriéndose.

In the southeast of Mexico we met Marina Huerta, a brilliant Yucatecan, dubbing actress, who gives voice to an iconic cartoon character: the fabulous Bart Simpson. She told us much more about her interesting career.

En el sureste de México conocimos a Marina Huerta, una brillante yucateca, actriz de doblaje, quien da voz a un personaje icónico de las caricaturas: el fabuloso Bart Simpson. Ella nos platicó mucho más sobre su interesante carrera.

Along the Camino Real Fourth Part By: Martha Vera, Honorary Consul of Spain in El Paso, Texas.

In the last issue, Governor Don Juan de Oñate had been ordered to delay his expedition by the Count of Monterrey de Zuniga y Acevedo due to the two inspections and inventory of all goods that would be taken. He and his expedition endured an almost 2 year wait from 1596 until January 29, 1598. On January 29, 1598, Governor Don Juan de Oñate and his expedition left the Valle de San Bartolomé, what is now Santa Barbara, Chihuahua, and began the journey northward towards the Rio Conchos, 51 miles away. Governor Oñate’s chronologist, Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá, would continue logging the journey.

En la última edición, el conde de Monterrey de Zúñiga y Acevedo ordenó dos inspecciones e inventarios de la expedición del gobernador don Juan de Oñate, quien retrasó su salida casi dos años, desde 1596 hasta el 29 de enero de 1598. En esta última fecha, la expedición salió del valle de San Bartolomé, en lo que hoy se conoce como Santa Barbara, Chihuahua, y comenzó su jornada hacia el norte, en dirección al río Conchos. El cronólogo del gobernador Oñate, don Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá, siguió haciendo anotaciones durante todo el camino.

Es importante recordar el inventario de la expedición. Había 539 hombres, mujeres y niños; 120 de los 539 eran soldados; llevaban 7 mil cabezas de ganado de varios tipos y bastantes medicinas, harina, frijol, carne seca, productos de hierro, artillería, suministros agrícolas, semillas de muchas especies, papel, arpillera y artículos para comerciar. La expedición completa abarcaba 4.8 km2. Se solicitaron 9 frailes franciscanos porque los primeros (mencionados en la edición anterior) tuvieron que regresar a México pensando que nunca se iniciaría el viaje.

It is important to, once again mention, the last inventory of the expedition. There were 539 men, women and children, 120 of them were soldiers, 7000 head of livestock and enough medicine, flour, beans, jerked beef, iron products, artillery, farming supplies, seeds, and paper, sackcloth and articles of trade. The whole expedition was 3 miles long and 3 miles wide. The nine Franciscans, mentioned in the previous volume, had abandoned the expedition prior to this inventory. Nine new Franciscans were requested by the expedition because the original Franciscans went back to Mexico City fearing that the expedition would not happen.

El invierno de 1598 fue sumamente frío, con nieve y vientos fuertes. Las distancias fueron medidas en leguas (cada una equivale a 2.6 millas o 4.2 km). La expedición avanzó un total de 19.5 leguas; es decir, 82 km, hasta llegar al río Conchos y todos esperaron ahí hasta que se terminó de realizar la inspección, la cual concluyó mediante la revisión del ejército.

The winter was bitterly cold with snow and at times, extremely windy. The expedition was logging their journey in Spanish leagues. A league is equivalent to 2.6 miles. They traveled 1.5 leagues or 3.9 miles to reach the Conchos River. They remained at the Conchos until the final inspection was complete, which concluded with a review of the army.

Salieron el 10 de febrero y llegaron al río de San Pedro, donde acamparon por un mes para esperar a los frailes franciscanos mencionados. Durante este tiempo, el gobernador Juan de Oñate mandó a su sargento mayor con 16 hombres a explorar la ruta que podría ser transitada en carreta hasta el río del Norte. Este camino era peligroso, pues había nativos hostiles en las dunas, por lo que era necesario revisar que fuera la mejor opción.

Los nueve frailes franciscanos llegaron el 3 de marzo de 1598 y los exploradores también regresaron con una nueva ruta que le permitiría a la expedición evitar las dunas, la cual consistía en avanzar un poco hacia el este para no correr riesgos.

On February 10 they left their camp and arrived at the San Pedro River where they camped for a month awaiting the Franciscan friars that were the substitutes for the first nine that had abandoned the expedition. During this time, Governor Juan de Oñate sent out his Sargent Major with 16 men to explore a route that could be traveled by cart to the Rio del Norte. The route was treacherous, with hostile natives roaming the area. Governor Oñate would have to avoid those areas to protect his expedition. The 9 Franciscans arrived on March 3. The scouts also returned with a route and a plan. The plan had the route mapped to avoid going directly north through the dunes and to go east of the dunes and then north thus avoiding the danger.

La expedición salió del río de San Pedro y avanzaba entre 2 y 3 leguas al día por una ruta exuberante, con bastantes quinielas, marismas y ríos. Algunos hicieron el esfuerzo de plantar semillas de todos los tipos que traían para revisar cuáles plantas podían crecer en aquellas tierras y cada detalle fue consignado por escrito con la mayor diligencia.

The expedition left the San Pedro River and moved two to three leagues per day. The route was lush with plenty of pools, marshes and rivers. They made it a point to plant the seeds they brought with them along the way to see what would grow along the route.

Everything was diligently recorded.

They came to a large lake, Laguna de San Benito. It was large and the water smelled and tasted like the lake in Mexico. They camped here for two days. The latitude was logged at 30 degrees. On April 1, they continued north and feeling confident, they set out for a nine leagues, a 23.4 mile, distance.

Cuando llegaron a la enorme laguna de San Benito, se sorprendieron porque su agua tenía aroma y sabor similares a los del lago de México. Junto a ella acamparon durante 2 días, a una latitud de 30 grados. El 1º de abril continuaron el viaje hacia el norte y, confiando en el camino, avanzaron 9 leguas (37.8 km).

The trip was beginning to wane as there was no water in sight.

Thankfully, the rain began and poured so hard that large pools formed. They unyoked 5000 head of livestock so they could drink.

Later, the remaining 2000 arrived to quench their thirst. They called this place Socorro del Cielo, Help from Heaven.

La expedición empezó a menguar por la escasez de agua y por eso sus integrantes se sintieron muy agradecidos cuando comenzó a llover tan fuerte que se formaron pequeñas lagunas, donde soltaron a 5,000 cabezas de ganado para que bebieran. Después llegaron las otras 2,000 a hacer lo mismo. A este lugar le llamaron Socorro del Cielo. A continuación, caminaron dos días hasta llegar al río de la Mentira. Lo nombraron así porque, a pesar de tener un cauce amplio y muchos árboles, no tenía agua.

Viajaron 6 leguas, 25.2 km, hasta los Baños de San Isidro, que eran termales y salados. Ahí acamparon por dos días. En cuanto salió el sol, caminaron de nuevo hacia el norte y llegaron a Alchicubite de San Vicente, una sierra y marisma con agua buena. En el lugar se refrescaron y llenaron las botas de agua. Continuaron la jornada caminando 3 leguas por donde empiezan los médanos, en la ciénaga de la Concepción, y llegaron a un manantial llamado San León.

They set out, once again, and traveled 2 days until they arrived at Rio de la Mentira, River of the Lie. They named it this because although it had a large riverbed and many trees, there was no water.

They traveled 6 leagues, 15.6 miles to Los Baños de San Isidro, the Baths of San Isidro. These were hot springs and undrinkable. They spent 2 days camped here. As day broke, they prepared for the journey northward to Alchicubite de San Vicente, a sierra and marsh with good water. Here they refreshed their water supply.

Continuaron 3 leguas más hasta llegar a la Boca de Médanos, donde las dunas se abren, y se quedaron ahí 7 días. Desgraciadamente, murió un niño zapoteca y fue sepultado ahí. Los zapotecas que venían en la expedición eran herreros; ayudaban a construir las naves. La falta de agua fue lo más difícil de enfrentar para todos: era necesario llevar al ganado hasta el río del Norte lo más pronto posible.

They traveled 3 leagues to where the sand dunes began, Cienega de la Concepcion, then to a small water hole, San Leon spring. They continued for another 3 leagues to Boca de Medanos where the dunes open and spent 7 days there. A young Zapoteca boy died and was buried there. The Zapoteca families that joined the expedition in Zacatecas were the builders of the naves. The lack of water was the most difficult hardship for the expedition. They knew that they had to drive the livestock to Rio del Norte as quickly as possible.

El 20 de abril viajaron 3 leguas, 12.6 km, y llegaron al río del Norte, exactamente a 31.5 grados de latitud. En esta zona la corriente iba despacio y el fondo estaba fangoso; además, abundaban árboles y había peces que les recordaban al Guadalquivir. El río fluía del norte, como su nombre lo indicaba, y luego daba vuelta hacia el este, donde se conocía como río Bravo. El Conchos y otros más se unían al cauce del gran río del Norte, al este de donde se encontraba la expedición.

Siguieron el río hasta el 26 de abril y luego esperaron 3 días para reunir a la expedición completa, entonces decidieron enviar al capitán Aguilar a explorar el camino. Regresó con buenas noticias después de haber avanzado 16 leguas (67.2 km).

“En el 30 de abril, 1598, el día de la Ascensión de Nuestro Señor, en este punto por el río del Norte, el gobernador don Juan de Oñate tomó posesión de todos los reinos y provincias de Nuevo México, en el nombre de Dios, del rey Felipe, y en la presencia de Juan Pérez de Donis, notario real y secretario de esta jurisdicción y expedición.

Se celebró con un sermón, una gran celebración eclesiástica y secular, un gran saludo con trompeta y regocijo y, en la tarde, con una comedia. El estandarte real fue bendecido y dado a cargo de Francisco de Sosa Peñalosa, la bandera real.” Citado del libro de Hammond y Rey.

On April 20 they traveled 3 leagues, 7.8 miles, arriving at Rio del Norte, exactly at 31.5 degrees latitude. The river here was slow and muddy. There was an abundance of trees and fish and reminiscent of the Guadalquivir. The river flowed from the north, which is how it got its name. It then turned to the east where its name became the Rio Bravo. On its eastward movement, the Conchos and other rivers join it.

They traveled up the river until the 26th. They waited 3 days until the entire expedition was reunited. Captain Aguilar was sent ahead to explore the road. He came back with good news having traveled 16 leagues, 41.6 miles.

“On April 30, 1598, on the day of the Ascension of our Lord, at this point by the Rio del Norte, Governor Don Juan de Oñate took possession of all the kingdoms and provinces of New Mexico, in the name of King Philip, our lord, in the presence of Juan Pérez de Dónis, royal notary and secretary of this jurisdiction and expedition.

There was a sermon, a great ecclesiastical and secular celebration, a great salute and rejoicing, and in the afternoon, a comedy. The royal standard was blessed and placed in charge of Francisco de Sosa Peñalosa, the royal ensign.” Quote from Hammond and Rey. The distance from Santa Barbara, Chihuahua, to San Elizario, TX is 390 miles or 628 km, a total of 150 Spanish terrestrial leagues. The area, which is now San Elizario, TX, is where Governor Don Juan de Oñate took possession of the land. San Elizario celebrates Governor Don Juan de Oñate’s ‘La Toma’, or taking possession of the land every April 27-30. This year will mark the 27th Rio Grande Conference and Festival. Historians from all over the world attend the conference to discuss the archives and as in Oñate’s day, it is filled with celebration. You are invited to attend and enjoy this event. The reenactment of ‘La Toma’ and Villagra’s comedy are always a hit.

La distancia de Santa Barbara, Chihuahua, a San Elizario, Texas, es de 390 millas o 628 km, un total de 150 leguas terrestres. El área de San Elizario, Texas, es donde el gobernador don Juan de Oñate hizo la toma de las tierras de Nuevo México. San Elizario celebra ‘La Toma’ anualmente, del 27 al 30 de abril. Mexican Art Craft in the Border

he art crafts of Mexico are a fundamental part of the country’s culture. The pieces are admired by the eyes of the rest of world.

The Michoacan community creates “milagritos” (little miracles), figures made with wood, various metals, blown glass and cloth.

Claudia Morales, originally from the state of Chihuahua and Las Cruces, New Mexico´s resident, has been promoting her taste for mexican art for the past years.

Claudia explains that “each process uses different materials, shapes and colors, making each piece unique and unrepeatable. Acquiring them is a way to support the income of artisans and their families”.

Her purpose is to show the richness of mexican culture to the public, and for that, she teams up with a group of artist from the mexican state of Michoacan, to introduce and offer their products abroad.

The art pieces are offered for sale in various establishments of the region; although, in order to achieve other means of promotion and reach a larger market, donations are made for nonprofit events and auctions. LA VOZ DE MARINA HUERTA

Hace dos años conocí a Marina Huerta. Me llevó hacia

ella un proyecto y me encontré de frente con la creadora de una de las voces más representativas del mundo de la animación: Bart Simpson. Ella no sabía que soy un gran admirador de la serie y, por ende, de su trabajo.

Marina se define como una mujer apasionada, entregada, un poco histérica y loca, pero determinada a vivir intensamente: “Estoy en uno de los mejores momentos de mi vida y ojalá dure un buen rato, porque lo estoy disfrutando”, me dice.

Su gran pasión es actuar y, aunque sus inicios fueron en el teatro, descubrió en el mundo del doblaje un lugar para trascender, por ser una de las actrices más precisas con la sincronía y tener gran versatilidad para dar voz sobre todo a niños y mujeres de diferentes edades.

La fama no la ha cambiado. Desde que “Los Simpson” se popularizó, ha participado en diversas convenciones en toda Latinoamérica y ha sido entrevistada por grandes figuras; sin embargo, es consciente de la importancia de sus fans: está disponible para ellos en sus redes sociales.

También estuvo dispuesta a contestar mis preguntas a través de su voz, la que es difícil identificar porque se oculta entre las de sus personajes. De pronto, deja escapar a su Bart Simpson interno, pues han estado juntos casi 30 años.

En la ciudad de Mérida, Yucatán, donde radica desde hace cinco años, fundó el centro cultural Fusión Arte con la intención de promover esta actividad, autoemplearse y generar trabajo para otros artistas. Ahí fue nuestra cita, exactamente al fondo, en la cabina de grabación donde da vida a sus personajes, así que recorrí el recinto donde se pueden apreciar las imágenes de los pasos fundamentales en su carrera: fue la voz de Carlitos de Rugrats y la de Piolín, además de permitir a actrices como Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock y Julia Roberts “hablar” en español. Actualmente, a partir de la temporada 16, Marina hace el doblaje de Marge Simpson para Latinoamérica.

Así es Marina Huerta, una de las mejores personas que he conocido. Estoy orgulloso de ser su amigo y me falta aprender mucho de ella.

Durante nuestra entrevista Marina Huerta estuvo sonriente y llena de energía. Vive así: con gran entusiasmo, muchos proyectos y sin detenerse. Desde que llegó a Mérida ha producido y actuado en teatro y producciones web, además de organizar eventos y encuentros de artistas. Se siente bien recibida por los yucatecos y dispuesta a quedarse con ellos hasta el final de sus días.

I met Marina Huerta two years ago. A project drew me to her, and I found one of the most iconic voices in world of animation: Bart Simpson. She didn´t know I´m a huge fan of the series and, therefore, of her work.

“I´m happy, I´m fullfilled and with so many things to do”

Marina, defines herself as a passionate thrown woman, a little bit crazy, but willing to live intensely: “I´m in my best moment, I hope It last for a long time, because I´m really enjoying myself”. Her passion in life is acting, and even though her early acting years were in theatre, she found out that dubbing was an unexplored way where she might succeed because of her precise synchronicity and versatility to give voice to kids and women of different ages.

In Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, where she had lived for the last five years, she founded the Cultural Center Fusion Arte, to promote the dubbing, and help other dubbing artist. Our interview took place in her Cultural Center, right at the end of the place where the record booth is, where she brings to life her characters. I went through the place and could find her trajectory on images: she was the Spanish voice of Chuckie Finister from Rugrats and Tweety Bird, she also allows Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts to speak Spanish. Nowadays Marina is the voice of Marge Simpson in Latin America.

In the interview, Marina was smiling and energized. She lives like that, full of enthusiasm, and lots of projects. Since her arrival to Merida, she has produced and performed in theatre and web productions; she even manages events and artist conferences. She feels welcomed by the Yucatan people and she´s willing to stay with them until the end of her days.

Fame hasn´t changed her. Since The Simpson´s became popular, she has intervened in a number of conventions in Latin America. She is close to her fans and keeps contact with them on her social media. She answered my questions with her own voice, the one that hides among her characters. Now and then, she let Bart Simpson´s voice out, that´s easy because they have been together for almost three decades.

That´s how Marina Huerta is, one of the best person I know.

I´m proud of being her friend, and sure I still got a lot to learn from her.

Her journey through her modeling career, started since she was 12 years of age. She started in Khodigo model agency, located in Ciudad Juarez Chihuahua, were she first met her mentor, Fredo Luna. Ever since, Denise has had the opportunity of having pleasant experiences in local and national contests.

In addition she has had the experience in runways, magazine ads, and television appearances which are part of her resume. Her aspirations as a model are very clear and precise, since she has maintained her feet on the ground: “my biggest inspiration is all the support I receive from a lot of people”. “ When someone sees you and listens to you, you need to be thankful and be motivated by it.”

Aside from the world of competitions, Denise spends her time in he r studies, since she is motivated to finish her career as a radiologist in El Paso Community College. Like any girl of her age she likes to dance and get together with her frineds.

Last December, she was awarded second place in The World Miss University competition, where she was also recognized under the Miss Sincerity and Miss Intelligence categories. Congratulations Denise!

Desde entonces, Denise ha vivido gratas experiencias en concursos organizados localmente y a nivel nacional; además, pasarelas, promocionales en revistas y televisión forman parte de su portafolio. No obstante, sus aspiraciones son muy claras, pues mantiene los pies en la tierra: “Mi mayor inspiración es el apoyo que recibo de mucha gente.

Fuera del ámbito de los certámenes, Denisse dedica su tiempo a su prioridad actual: sus estudios, pues está avocada a terminar su carrera como radióloga en El Paso Community College. Como a cualquier chica de su edad, le encanta disfrutar del baile y convivir con sus amigos.

The word Pow wow, comes from the algoquin word “pauau�, this word is used to establish a congregation of people in which adults, and kids perform a festive ceremony where they summon their mores. The tour goes over different states in the American territory, including the border sister city of Mexico.

Las danzas son una parte muy importante: en los Pow wows se realizan bailes sociales en un espacio acondicionado para tal fin. Estos inician con la “Gran Entradaâ€?, cuando los grupos participantes abanderan el festejo, presidido por los jefes tribales, las princesas, los ancianos y los organizadores; por Ăşltimo, ingresan los danzantes.

Los cantantes de Pow Wow son parte muy importante de su cultura. Las canciones tienen contenido religioso, de connotaciones guerreras y sociales. Los sonidos emitidos por los danzantes y cantores reemplazan casi siempre las palabras para llevarnos hasta el origen de todo.

The dancers attire has evolved over time, demonstrating that their different cultures are in constant motion and they never stagnate. These transformations allow us to appreciate the significant heritage of these tribes.

The dance styles seen frequently in men at the modern Pow Wows are known as Chicken,Grass, Fancy, Straight, and Northern Traditional, While women dance Buckskin, Cloth, Jingle, and Fancy Shawl also known as Northern Shawl. It is the newest dance style that comes from the North American tribes and the border with Canada.

It is believed that the War Dancing Society of the Ponca and other tribes of the southern plains gave its origin to the Pow Wow. Celebrating the ephemeral beauty of life

Milburgo Treviño is the only visual artist that has dedicated over 5 decades to preserve this fragile and colorful art.

Cardboard art it´s an ephemeral art mani-

festation, that despite the fugacity of its pieces made out of cardboard, it is a millenary expression and its heritage continues to be maintained. Examples of this fugacity are, “alebrijes”, “Judas” or “Toritos” are manufactured to be burned off on religious Mexican festivities.

Its origins dates from ancient Egypt, where the papyrus quilling technique developed.

Pre-Columbian indigenous people also made masks and headdresses out of bark with animal feathers or fur and vegetable paper During the Viceroyalty of New Spain, friars confectioned grotesque pieces of cardboard to “burn” Judas during Easter week but was not until mid-Twenty Century that the cardboard artist became to be recognized and appreciated by popular art collectors and by well-known artists like Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, and Francisco Toledo.

The making of art objects with fragile materials requires creativity, dedication, and this unique ancestral inspiration that Miburgo Treviño owns, who dedicates his time to cardboard art in Veracruz, Mexico.

Cuando era niño, el maestro Treviño quedó impactado al ver la imagen de la Catrina de J. G. Posada; ahora, la hace suya cada vez que la recrea.

Hay arte creado para no durar, como la cartonería. A

pesar de la fugacidad de sus piezas, se trata de una expresión milenaria y su herencia continúa nutriéndose.

En México tiene una gran tradición que debería ser más valorada, pues abarca creaciones como los famosos “judas”, “alebrijes” y “toritos”, creados para ser consumidos por el fuego durante festividades religiosas.

Sus orígenes se remontan al antiguo Egipto, donde se desarrolló la técnica del “quilling” en papiro. También, algunos pueblos indígenas precolombinos confeccionaban máscaras y tocados de corteza vegetal rematados con plumas o piel y utilizaban papel amate.

Durante el virreinato, los frailes crearon grotescas piezas de cartón para “quemar a judas” en Semana Santa, pero hasta mediados del siglo XX las obras de artistas cartoneros comenzaron a ser apreciadas por coleccionistas de arte popular y creadores como Rivera, Tamayo y Toledo.

Fabricar objetos artísticos con materiales frágiles requiere, fundamentalmente, de creatividad, dedicación y de la inspiración ancestral que posee el maestro Milburgo Treviño, dedicado al arte de la cartonería en Veracruz.

As we enter his workshop, a smell of cardboard, oil paint and paste impregnates the air. Here is where numerous pieces of skulls and skeletons wait peacefully to fill with life and color the traditional Dia de muertos´ altar that has been exhibited for decades in the historical downtown of Veracruz, Mexico.

Many works of Milburgo Treviño have gained admirers in Belgium, Holland, Cuba and the United States.

His “calacas jarochas” laugh ironically while they carry gracefully on their heads papier-mâché flowers.

They know, as their light bodies stand elegantly, that their beauty will not last, but it will provoke the fascination of spectators, who will always remember them.

Besides to its striking and playful appearance, the paper sculptures reflect the love and dedication that Treviño prints on them., Simple and talkative, like a good “Jarocho” born in the traditional neighborhood of Huaca, in the Port of Veracruz, he shares with Border Heritage the process of construction of their creations. To make a sculpture over five meters high, he starts by assembling a reed structure called “soul” and then the figure is molded with the mixture of cardboard and paste.

“While a little sun dries it, it is bleached with water paint and, after a new drying phase the final color is applied”.

Al entrar en su taller nos envuelve el olor del cartón, la pintura acrílica y el engrudo. En ese ambiente nace una multitud de livianas calaveras y esqueletos para llenar de vida y color el tradicional altar de muertos, que desde hace décadas se expone en el centro histórico de Veracruz.

Para elaborar una escultura de más de cinco metros de alto, se empieza por montar una estructura de carrizo denominada “alma” y luego se va moldeando la figura con la mezcla de cartón y engrudo. “Mientras un poco de sol la seca, se blanquea con pintura de agua y después de una nueva fase de secado, se le aplica el color definitivo”.

Además de su aspecto impactante y lúdico, las esculturas de papel reflejan el cariño y dedicación del maestro Milburgo, quien sencillo y platicador, como buen jarocho nacido en el tradicional barrio de la Huaca, en el puerto de Veracruz, comparte con Border Heritage el proceso de construcción de sus creaciones.

Muchas obras del maestro Milburgo han conquistado admiradores en Bélgica, Holanda, Cuba y Estados Unidos. Sus calacas jarochas portan con garbo flores de papel maché y ríen irónicamente. Saben, mientras sus livianos cuerpos se yerguen con elegancia, que su belleza no durará, pero provocará la fascinación de los espectadores, quienes siempre las recordarán.

The Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce The 113th anniversary of The Greater El Paso Chamber

of Commerce was a great occasion to celebrate but also was an emotional farewell in honor of his president Richard Dayoub, who leaves office after 15 years of leading this organization.

El Paso´s Convention Center hosted this Gala where hundreds of guests were welcome with exquisite cocktail drinks.

During the dinner, there was a recognition ceremony for some of its members.

Guests showed feelings of joy and nostalgia at this unforgettable gala, in which there were group pictures taken, the classic ‘selfies’, and of course a ball, which was enlivened by The Spazmatics’ music.

We traveled to China, so Odette knew more about the cultural background of this world power country. We walked its streets, visit its markets, and historical sites, and we knew could the process of the making of two fascinating products: Silk and tea.

Hicimos el viaje a China con la intención de que Odette conociera más sobre la cultura de esta súper potencia mundial. Pudimos recorrer sus calles, mercados, sitios históricos y también logramos conocer los procesos para elaborar dos productos fascinantes: la seda y el té.

Our first encounter with the People´s Republic of China was at the Forbidden City, also known as the Imperial Palace. The building has more than nine thousand rooms that show the luxurious life of Emperors.

Nuestro primer encuentro con la República China fue una visita a la “Ciudad Prohibida”, conocida también como el Palacio Imperial. El complejo tiene más de 9 mil habitaciones que muestran la lujosa vida de los emperadores.

Then we tour the Summer Palace, a beautiful Classic building considered a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, it was built for the Emperor and his family. The Capital of this beautiful country gave us the amazing Great Wall, one of the most visited touristic sites, and one of the Seven Wonders of the modern world. We couldn´t leave Beijing without trying a typical Chinese dish: Peking duck.

Después recorrimos el Palacio de Verano, hermosa obra clásica considerada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, que fue concebida para el disfrute exclusivo del emperador y su familia. La capital de este hermoso país también nos ofreció el recorrido de la imponente Muralla China, uno de los lugares más visitados del planeta por ser considerado como una de las siete maravillas del mundo moderno. Antes de salir de Beijing (también llamada Pekín o Pequín) nos aseguramos de probar un delicioso platillo típico: el famoso pato pekinés.

We flew to Xi´an, the place where the Terracotta Warriors were discovered: The fabulous collection of 8 thousand soldiers and horses, was created more than two thousand years ago to protect emperor Quin on the afterlife.

We visited the amazing Temple of Heaven, a 600-yearold construction where the Emperor prayed to the stars and performed rituals for good harvest.

Anoother beautiful experience was visiting the Yuyuan gardens. We also went shopping in Nanjing street, the most important commercial area in China; But what we liked the most was that we experience the kindness of the local people, who ask to take pictures with us because our skin and hair color attracted their attention.

An ancient Chinese proverb says: “When you drink water, remember the source”; It is a lesson that a proud people leave us as their inheritance, from where it is projected with great force towards the future.

In the evenings, we rode bikes on the surroundings of the Wall of Xi´an. At Shanghai, we sailed the Huangpu river, from where the sightings were spectacular, we could see the combination of elegant buildings from Colonial times with the modernity of the financial zone of Pudong; On sunset, the city lights offer a show worth of admiration.

Volamos hacia Xi’an, ciudad donde descubrieron a los famosos guerreros de terracota: la fabulosa colección de 8 mil soldados y caballos de tamaño real fue creada hace más de dos mil años por el emperador Quin para que lo protegiera en el otro mundo. También conocimos el bellísimo “Templo del Cielo”, edificio de casi 600 años de antigüedad donde el emperador oraba en conexión directa con el firmamento y realizaba rituales para obtener buenas cosechas.

Durante las tardes paseábamos en bicicleta por los alrededores de la muralla que rodea la antigua ciudad de Xi’an. En Shangai, hicimos la travesía por el río Huangpu, desde donde se tiene una vista panorámica espectacular que combina la elegancia de los edificios de la época colonial con la sorprendente modernidad de la zona financiera de Pudong; cuando oscurece, las luces de la ciudad son otro espectáculo digno de admiración.

Otra experiencia hermosa fue visitar los jardines Yuyuan. También fuimos de compras a la calle Nanjing, la más importante zona comercial de China, pero nos gustó más que durante el viaje vivimos la amabilidad de la gente, quien se acercaba para fotografiarse porque le llamaba la atención nuestro color de piel y de cabello.

Un antiguo proverbio chino dice: “cuando bebas agua, recuerda la fuente”; es la lección que nos deja un pueblo orgulloso de su herencia, desde donde se proyecta con gran fuerza hacia el futuro.

here is one key word to describe success: honesty. It is a virtue that has allowed the growth of a company that has remained firm in its conditions for 60 years. With that promise, Economy Cash and Carry was born in El Paso, Texas, an industry that offers wholesale groceries to the Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua market as well as the southwest Texas market.

And the fact is that Economy Cash and Carry’s mission is, undoubtedly, customer satisfaction, but the relationship of respect among its employees has a great influence since it is developed in a very friendly work environment. This fact translates into the fulfillment of their goals, since the merchandise is always delivered in full and on time.

It was in 1958 when a group of five men, with vision and of the same family, ventured to undertake this business which, until now, is known as one of the most prosperous in the region.

Another satisfaction is that their products are not only supplied to large food chains, but also reach the new entrepreneur, as well as small grocery stores. The good service without distinctions contributes to the success of the people and is a commitment that the company managers have.

Its origin goes back to the sixties, when its location was occupied by a large one-story building that had a basement with an area of 7,200 square feet, located at 219 S. Ochoa Street.

Two years later, they moved to 900 and 1000 E. Overland Avenue, where they remained until 2002. In 1980 and throughout the nineties, the business expanded to a warehouse located at 100 S. Cotton Street.

Hay una palabra clave para describir el éxito: honestidad. Es una virtud que ha permitido el crecimiento de una empresa que se ha mantenido firme en sus convicciones durante 60 años. Con esa promesa nació Economy Cash and Carry en El Paso, Texas, una industria que ofrece abarrotes por mayoreo al mercado de Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, así como al suroeste de Texas.

Fue en 1958 cuando un grupo de cinco hombres con visión y de la misma familia, se aventuró a emprender este negocio, que hasta hoy se coloca como uno de los más prósperos de la región.

SANTA BÁRBARA: Patrimonio cultural del Camino Real de Tierra Adentro A

t the end of the XVI Century, Santa Barbara, Chihuahua, had become a very important mining center of the northern region of New Spain. In 1598 Juan de Oñate left this historical cite to the far lands of New Mexico with numerous families, soldiers and cattle with the aim of colonizing it.

With time, the route that Oñate took, was called Ruta de Oñate and years later it became a part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the historical trail that connected Mexico City and Santa Fe during the Viceroyalty.

Last December, a group of Santa Barbara´s community promoters and researchers of the Instituto de Antropologia e Historia of Chihuahua presented to the public the results of the historic and anthropologic research of the project: Hablemos del Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, ayer y hoy (Let´s talk about Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, yesterday and today). Before an audience, the researchers talked about local historiography and the most significant traditions, such gastronomy, and crafts related to mining; Also about the rammed earth, vintage photography, and relevant historical monuments As the culmination, the City Council of Santa Barbara, led by its major Alberto Rodriguez, declared the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro as Municipal Heritage. This declaratory it’s the first of its kind in Chihuahua State; we hope it serves as an example to other municipalities that have heritage linked to the Camino Real.

finales del siglo XVI, Santa Bárbara se había convertido en un centro minero muy importante en las tierras áridas del Septentrión como se le llamó al norte de la Nueva España. En 1598 Juan de Oñate partía de esta histórica localidad hacia las lejanas tierras de Nuevo México con numerosas familias, soldados y ganado con el firme propósito de colonizarlas.

El camino que siguieron, al tiempo, se le identificó como Ruta de Oñate y años más tarde se convirtió en parte del Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, la legendaria rúa que unió a la Ciudad de México con Santa Fe durante el virreinato.

El pasado 4 de diciembre de 2017, en Santa Bárbara Chihuahua, se presentaron los resultados de investigación histórica y antropológica del proyecto Hablemos del Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, ayer y hoy por un grupo de investigadores del Centro INAH Chihuahua y algunos promotores comunitarios de la ciudad. Ante un público muy amplio se habló de la historiografía local y las tradiciones más significativas, la gastronomía y los oficios relacionados a la minería; también de la arquitectura de tierra, fotografía antigua y los monumentos históricos edificados más relevantes.

Como corolario, el Ayuntamiento de Santa Bárbara encabezado por su presidente Alberto Rodríguez, declaró al Camino Real de Tierra Adentro como Patrimonio Municipal. Esta declaratoria es la primera en su tipo en el estado; esperamos sirva de ejemplo para otros municipios que cuentan con una rica herencia ligada al Camino Real.

The story of Nancy Gutierrez is similar to the one that many La historia de Nancy Gutiérrez es similar a la de muchos Mexican children who migrate to the United States of America have; her family had the desire to succeed and took her with them to a country where, unwittingly, she lived illegally until becoming an adult.

Nancy was born in the city of Guadalajara and, when she was one year old, she went with her family to live in Illinois.

Her childhood went without any difficulties, she pursued a career in public health thanks to a scholarship; However, she was not able to continue fulfilling her dreams due to her immigration status. Because of this condition, the government denied her the possibility of competing to obtain some scholarships and she was not allowed to get a job.

Nancy nació en la ciudad de Guadalajara y, cuando tenía un año, se fue con su familia a radicar a Illinois. Su infancia transcurrió sin dificultad, gracias a un programa de becas cursó una carrera de salud pública; sin embargo, no pudo continuar cumpliendo sus sueños debido a su estatus migratorio, pues por esta condición el gobierno le negó la posibilidad de concursar para obtener algunas becas y no se le permitió conseguir trabajo.

Despite having felt that her aspirations and her life were curtailed due to the large number of restrictions she had for several years because of her status, she was not discouraged and, in her attempt to remain in the United States, she managed to apply for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA), valid during the Barack Obama administration.

In her difficult journey, Nancy was encouraged by her family and friends, so she decided to help those who were in the similar conditions: she wrote a book, of which she is co-author, to give tools to the teachers who work with undocumented students. In it, she also encourages students to come out of the shadows and face the stigmas, since she considers that a large part of the “dreamers” are good people. In addition, she is concerned about President Trump’s policies.

The controversy that now exists over the blockade of a California judge to extend the cancellation of the program represents a benefit for thousands of “dreamers” who, even after the expiration date, will be able to renew their permit indefinitely, until new instructions on a permanent immigration reform are released. In this way, they could have have a full life and reach their goals, just like Nancy.

She got her legal residency and continues to fight: she arrived in El Paso, Texas, where she found an employment opportunity with the Villalobos and Moore law firm. “I’m here because I want to be a lawyer to continue helping people who have a similar story to mine. I thank John Moore for giving me the opportunity to learn and the certainty that I can be the professional I always dreamed of.”

En estos momentos muchos “dreamers” pueden renovar su permiso de manera indefinida y alcanzar sus metas.

A pesar de haber sentido que sus aspiraciones y su vida fueron truncadas debido a la gran cantidad de restricciones que tuvo durante varios años por ser indocumentada, ella no se desanimó y, en su intento por permanecer en los Estados Unidos, logró adherirse al Programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA por sus siglas en ingles), válido durante el gobierno de Barack Obama.

En su difícil camino, Nancy fue alentada por su familia y amistades, así que decidió ayudar a quienes estuvieran en condiciones similares a las de ella: escribió un libro, del cual es coautora, para dar herramientas a los maestros que trabajan con estudiantes ilegales. En él también anima a los alumnos a salir de las sombras y enfrentar los estigmas, pues considera que gran parte de los “dreamers” son personas de bien. Además, está preocupada por las políticas del presidente Trump.

La controversia que ahora existe por el bloqueo de un juez de California para extender la cancelación del programa representa un beneficio para miles de “dreamers” o “soñadores”, quienes incluso después del plazo de vigencia podrán renovar su permiso de manera indefinida, hasta que se den a conocer nuevas instrucciones sobre una reforma migratoria permanente. De este modo, podrían tener una vida plena y alcanzar sus metas, igual que Nancy.

Ella consiguió su residencia legal y sigue luchando: llegó a la ciudad de El Paso, Texas, donde encontró una oportunidad de empleo en el despacho de abogados Villalobos and Moore. “Estoy aquí porque quiero ser abogada para seguir ayudando a personas que tienen una historia similar a la mía. Agradezco a John Moore por darme la oportunidad de aprender y la certeza de que puedo ser la profesionista que siempre soñé”.

I never imagine that my body was a host of a so invasive illness. I am Victor Manuel Tolosa, my life has been magical, joyful, productive and always driven by positive thoughts. I´ve been a journalist, anchor, news writer and a columnist for more than thirty years.

Nunca imaginé que una enfermedad tan invasiva pudiera alojarse en mi cuerpo. Soy Víctor Manuel Tolosa, mi vida ha sido mágica, alegre, dinámica, decretada con pensamientos positivos. Durante más de 31 años he sido periodista, conductor, reportero y columnista.

One day, right before my radio show, my producer asked: “What happened to you?” I did not give importance to the big bump right on my right temple, but it kept growing. One morning, in front of my mirror I asked God and his Angels: “What is wrong with me?”

I heard a soft whisper “You have a tumor” but pretended I didn`t hear it. That morning I went to work at Televisa Espectaculos, in México City and talk about my lump with my sister (by choice) Mara Patricia Castañeda, she suggested that it was only a lipoma that a surgeon could take away in less than three minutes.

Un día, antes de entrar a mi programa de radio el productor me dijo: “¿Qué te pasó?”. No le di importancia al chipote en mi sien derecha, pero fue creciendo. Una mañana, frente al espejo, les pregunté a Dios y a los ángeles: “¿qué tengo?”. Escuché la suave voz: “Un tumor”. No hice caso: salí a trabajar a Televisa Espectáculos en la Ciudad de México, pero hablé del asunto con Mara Patricia Castañeda (mi hermana por elección), quien opinó que tal vez era grasa y un doctor me la podía quitar en 3 minutos.

The journey began at the plastic surgeon´s operating room, those three minutes became five hours. There was a big tumor! The Doctor took a sample and send it to pathology.

Fue en el quirófano del cirujano plástico donde comenzó la odisea: los 3 minutos se convirtieron en 5 horas: ¡había un tumor grande! El doctor tomó una muestra para enviarla a patología.

For the next four days, I lived in anxiety but kept on talking to God and His Angles. The biopsy said it was Cancer, a multiple myeloma type. Dr. Drijansky explained that this type of cancer is very aggressive, it attacks the bones. Multiple Myeloma affects people between 65 and 70 years of age, causing immediate death due to the strong chemotherapies treatments.

Durante 4 días viví en la zozobra y seguí conversando con Dios y los ángeles. El resultado del análisis: cáncer de mieloma múltiple. Fue el doctor Drijansky quien me lo explicó: es agresivo, se come los huesos por medio de tumores y ataca a personas entre los 65 y los 70 años, provocándoles una muerte casi inmediata debido a las fuertes quimioterapias necesarias para derrotarlo.

There is an intruder inside my body

Right after the beginning of my treatment, I ran out of savings and went to the National Cancerology Institute, where I found an eminence of medicine, Hematologist Ramiro Espinoza, with whom I have received more than 150 chemos, 40 radiotherapies, all kinds of medicine, painful surgeries and many many tests.

Poco después de iniciar el tratamiento, agoté mis ahorros y fui al Instituto Nacional de Cancerología, donde encontré a un ángel de la medicina: el hematólogo Ramiro Espinoza, quien ha llevado un proceso durante el cual he recibido más de 150 quimios, 40 radioterapias, medicinas de todas, fuertes operaciones y muchos estudios médicos.

Tumors consumed my bones, seven ribs, half of my coccyx and a hole in my fourth lumbar vertebrae. It has been a war, but also it has been an incredible learning experience.

Los tumores consumieron varios huesos de mi cuerpo: 7 costillas, la mitad del coxis, un orificio en la lumbar 4, varios huesos de piernas y rodillas. Ha sido una guerra, pero también un aprendizaje increíble.

I must administer doses of morphine every six hours to minimize the pain, I also meditate to mitigate it and to learn from it. The pain has triple its intensity, due to a lumbar herniated disc which is pressing the central nerves of my spine, but I keep on going.

Debo aplicarme morfina cada 6 horas para minimizar mis dolores en un 40%; el resto lo canalizo a través de la meditación y de aprender de ellos. Como un disco me está aplastando una hernia y dos lumbares, y a su vez, estas machacan los nervios centrales de la columna, mis dolores se han triplicado, pero sigo adelante.

CHIHUAHUA Las asociaciones “Niños de Todos” y “Brazos de Algodón”, de Ciudad Juárez, lograron la meta: en un acto humanitario entregaron cobijas y chamarras, entre otras prendas invernales, a familias de la localidad de Choguita, ubicada en el municipio de Guachochi, Chihuahua.

Durante un evento realizado en dicha comunidad, los hermanos rarámuri se mostraron agradecidos con los integrantes de estas agrupaciones, con quienes compartieron un momento fraternal para llevar un poco de calor a los habitantes de la región, donde las bajas temperaturas son intensas durante el invierno.
