Mr. Alfredo I. Velásquez and the Santa Cruz County School Superintendent’s Office is continuing its launch of the arts initiative in our county schools: Santa Cruz County Arts for Learning in partnership with Young Audiences. The program welcomed the first visiting artist in residence for the 2018-2019 school year the week of September 10th – 14th.

Erik Cork, author and creator of Cork’s Coastto-Coast Classroom: Rebuilding the Writing Foundation, engaged third grade students and teachers in an all-day writing workshop designed to motivate and encourage all to celebrate a campuswide love for literacy and language. Mr. Cork and his wife Cynthia, traveled from school to school with a truck load of equipment and student materials until his one of a kind, six hour writing presentation reached all 660 3rd graders from Elgin K-8, Patagonia Elementary, Little Red School, Lincoln Elementary, Mary L. Welty Elementary, A.J. Mitchell Elementary, Coronado Elementary, Challenger Elementary, Bracker Elementary, Calabasas K-8, Mountain View Elementary, and San Cayetano Elementary. #4 Pg.

The students and teachers experienced Mr. Cork’s dynamic and highly interactive session filled with music, movement, and of course, rap that incorporated writing terminology, English Language Arts strategies, and FUN! Pencils were burning up the pages of the colorful workbook that went hand in hand with the presentation and students could hardly wait to show their finished work to their proud teachers. Students weren’t the only ones enjoying Mr. Cork and his positive energy, teachers walked away with effective approaches to teaching the writing standards and innovative tools to use back in their classrooms to enhance their writing lessons. A community reception was held midweek to honor the artist in residence at the Americana Hotel where former Young Audiences volunteers, local organizations, and school communities could gather together and get to know the artist and his program.

The Santa Cruz County School Superintendent’s Office sponsored the workshops and evening event with the support of Nogales Unified School District #1 who contributed to help cover costs for Nogales Public Schools.

Thank you to District Superintendents and Principals who embraced the project and hosted the workshops. Santa Cruz County Arts for Learning is looking forward too many more arts integrated activities throughout the school year including the Holiday Nutcracker performance and spring music festivals.

The County Attorney’s Office is a full-service law firm for County Government and serves as a prosecutorial agency responsible for the fair administration of justice for all involved in the criminal justice system.

The Santa Cruz County Attorney's Office prosecutes all felony and juvenile offenses which occur in the County and all misdemeanor offenses which occur in the unincorporated areas of the County. The County Attorney reviews investigations conducted by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to determine if criminal violations have occurred and if enough evidence exists to continue with a prosecution.

Once it is determined that enough evidence exists, the CA’s Office initiates criminal proceedings in Justice or Superior Court by filing complaints against individuals accused of committing crimes.

Moreover, the CAs provides legal advice to the County Board of Supervisors and all the County Departments and provides legal representation to the County Departments in court proceedings. The CA’s also processes civil forfeiture cases to forfeit property or proceeds used in the commission of antiracketeering offenses in our community. #8 Pg.

The CA’s Office also has a Criminal Investigations Division (CID) assigned to conduct follow up investigations on pending cases and prosecutions. The CID provides witness and victim security during court hearings and case proceedings.

The CA’s Office is also responsible for office security and the security of CA personnel. On several occasions, our CID has supported smaller police departments and taken the lead on specific criminal investigations to include a homicide.

The Santa Cruz County Attorney’s Office has 31 employees. These employees are assigned to the Criminal Division, Civil Division, Victim Services Division, Criminal Investigations Division, or Civil Forfeiture Division.

The mission of the Santa Cruz County Attorney’s Office is to encourage, create, and maintain a safe and healthy community for all. Ensure that those who violate the law in Santa Cruz County are held accountable for their actions and ensure that fair and just consequences are imposed to those same individuals. The office provides professional, timely, and competent legal advice to County Government and local and state law enforcement agencies.

The office is always in need of volunteers. We are in the process of recruiting Victim Advocate Volunteers to assist victims of crime.

The Santa Cruz County Attorney George Silva was awarded last year the top DUI Enforcement Officer for Santa Cruz County by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Award from the Southern Arizona Affiliate for his work in prevention. He has carried out for the last six years a campaign about the dangers of “drunk driving” through different media outlets and schools.

The General Consulate of Mexico in Nogales, Arizona, commemorated their 208th Anniversary of Mexico's Independence “El Grito” with a colorful festival. The event was held on Saturday, September 15, 2018, at the Pierson Vocational High School.

The event was open to the public with free entertainment from both sister cities. The colorful festivities were hosted by the General Mexican Consulate and the City of Nogales with several other local businesses.

The colorful festival included local vendors, and entertainment for more than 400 people in attendance. Among those people in attendance were Ricardo Santana, Consul General of Mexico, Mayor of Nogales, Arizona, John F. Doyle, the Municipal President of Nogales, Sonora, Cuauhtémoc Galindo, Councilman Jose Diaz and the U.S. Consul Virginia Stabb.

Both sister cities worked collaboratively to bring entertainment from both sides of the border. The festival included entertainment from a variety of local artists. The public enjoyed entertainment by Mariachi Apache from Nogales High School, Banda Municipal, Grupo Folklorico V Studio, Ballet Folklorico Allewame, along with folkloric dancers from Lourdes Catholic School. Janet Benitez sang the American Anthem. The event followed with Ricardo Santana, Consul General of Mexico leading the public with the proclamation of Mexico’s Independence Day and “el grito”the cry for independence. The evening closed with the coronation of the new sovereign queen of “Fiestas Patrias”, Paulette Estrada.

Champion of Choices The Southern Arizona Autism Association along with other community organizations and members worked collaboratively to bring the Champion of Choices program to our schools for children from grades 3-12.

The Champion of Choices is a 3-day educational program that teaches students the importance of positive decision making, the dangers of substance abuse, peer pressure, and anti-bullying campaign for the prevention of suicide.

Make It Stop Tour was a free event held at the Nogales High School James K Clark Auditorium. Mr. Jaime Chamberlain delivered a speech for the community and Dr. Marcelino Varona introduced Marc Mero.

Parents joined their children for a one-hour presentation with Marc followed by a meet and greet. The Make It Stop Tour emphasizes the importance of the community along with an anti-bullying program for suicide prevention. Several attendees were engaged and became emotional throughout this powerful presentation.

“We are extremely grateful to be able to have community leaders join us for this community event. More than 5000 people participated in this 3-day event,” said Michelle Jacquez, President of So.AZ Autism Association.

Many people may question why would the Southern Arizona Autism Association be interested in supporting such a program. The answer is simple, disabled children are 60% more likely to get bullied annually. According to the CDC special needs, children are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide.

“The autism community struggles with depression and anxiety making it difficult for them to socialize. As a community we need to work together to encourage our children to stand against bullying,” said. Michelle Jacquez President of So.AZ Autism Association.

The first day Marc Mero Hero’s presentation was held for grades 3-5 at the Nogales High School James K Clark Auditorium. Students from all 6 elementary schools from NUSD attended. Rey and Meleeke educated students on the importance of good choices and self-esteem - I can, I Am, I believe, Dream Big! a45 minute presentation. Facilitators for this project were Dr. Tanya Henry, Dr. Frank Bejarano, and Edgard Echeverria.

Day two Champion of Choices program took was held at Wade Carpenter Middle School and Desert Shadows Middle School for grades 6-8. Marc Mero, former WWE champion under the names of “Marvelous Marc Mero” and “Johnny B Badd” are the founders of Champion of Choices nonprofit.

They have presented to over 2000 schools nationwide and travel internationally with their BADD Tour and Make it Stop Tour. Marc Mero gave a powerful testimony that had students, teachers, and staff in tears. Marc shared during his presentation he had experienced being bullied himself as a child. Following his presentation, many students reached out to him directly on Instagram with positive feedback, thanking him for his testimony and the impact it had on their lives.

Nogales High School students grades 9-12 had a more in-depth presentation, which covered topics on substance abuse and peer pressure during Marc Mero’s career as a wrestler. Mero educated students on the importance of making positive decisions, setting goals and dreaming big.

Many students also had an opportunity to talk to Marc on one on one.

“We are so happy that the So. AZ Autism Association in conjunction with Chamberlain Distributing brought this opportunity to Santa Cruz County. Marc Mero is a genuine inspiration he inspires audiences throughout the country. Our children have benefited tremendously from his presence. We are grateful to Michelle Jacquez, President of So.AZ Autism Association,” said Ramon Miranda.

Enrique R. Gonzales Jr Deputy County Attorney Mr. Gonzales is a local native. “I understand what values are important to the community, and I attempt to reinforce those values while seeking fair dispositions of cases,” said Deputy County Attorney. He has worked for the County Attorney’s Office for over a year. In that short time, he has been fortunate to represent Santa Cruz County in Justice Court as a misdemeanor prosecutor. As the misdemeanor prosecutor, he manages the Domestic Violence Diversion Program, Bad Check Program, criminal traffic and criminal misdemeanor caseloads. His role in this organization is simple: seek justice and retribution for the community. Mr. Gonzales reviews police reports, speaks to witnesses and charges appropriate allegations against criminal defendants. “I want the public to know that our office works extremely hard to accommodate each member of this community. We have great employees in this office and they all care immensely about the public,”said Deputy County Attorney.

Vanessa Cartwright Deputy County Attorney Ms. Cartwright has worked as a Deputy County Attorney with the Santa Cruz County Attorney’s Office for nine years. “It has been my absolute pleasure to work with such a fantastic team comprised of wonderful attorneys and caring staff,” said Ms. Cartwright.

She was awarded the Arizona Rising Star Prosecutor of the Year Award in 2011-2012 by the Arizona Prosecuting Attorney’s Advisory Council, and has also been nominated for the Rotary Club of Nogales’ Public Safety Officer of the Year in 2014 and 2018.

She has successfully prosecuted felony victim and drug cases, and currently assigned to Special Victims cases, where she handles everything from felony domestic violence and sex offenses to child abuse and child sexual assault cases. “This is not always an easy job, but it is very rewarding. I have had the opportunity to meet and help a lot of good people in the community. I also have great coworkers and supervisors who truly care about what we do, and believe in justice,”said Deputy County Attorney.

Mireya Velasco Legal Assistant Ms. Mireya Velasco was hired as a legal assistant. “I am very fortunate to work for an office that provides exceptional service. Being part of a great team that goes over and beyond their job responsibility to help the public,” said Ms. Velasco.

She manages the Domestic Violence Diversion Program and the Bad Check Program.

Domestic Violence Diversion Programs are educational counseling programs offered to “eligible defendants” as an alternative to a criminal conviction and their consequences {i.e., jail, probation, fines, and fees). Defendants who successfully complete all aspects of the diversion program have their cases dismissed without prejudice. It helps to unite families who have experienced domestic violence. The Santa Cruz County Attorney’s Office Bad Check Program provides an opportunity for most offenders to avoid prosecution by paying both restitution for the check and the statutory collection fee. If the check writer does not respond to an initial warning from the bad check recipient, then the check writer will be held accountable by the County Attorney’s Office and face possible prosecution.

Alma Demarest Legal Assistant Alma Demarest earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona in Public Management and Policy with an emphasis in Criminal Justice with a minor in sociology. “For the past three years, I have been given the privilege to work for this office as a legal assistant for the juvenile prosecutor, where I have learned from the legal process, to prepare legal documents, and most importantly to help keep our community safe. It makes me proud to work with an office that is dedicated to make our community a safer environment for our children,” said Alma Demarest.

Ms. Demarest manages the juvenile division at the SCC Attorney’s Office.

My job is special to me because I am glad I get to be a part of an office that wants to help young people.

Young people are our future, so helping them make smart choices is important. The juvenile division program tries to help young people who have broken the law learn from their mistakes and make sure they smart choices moving forward. “It is a gratifying feeling to help families who are struggling and help keep our community safe. This is what makes my job special,” said Ms. Demarest.
