On Tuesday, May 10th Cochise College held its 2016 commencement ceremony at the Nogales High School Auditorium. Red caps populated the first couple of rows at the auditorium as Cochise College graduates celebrated their educational accomplishments. Graduates were surrounded by family, friends, and faculty who supported them throughout their educational journey. Everyone in attendance had the pleasure of enjoying a musical interlude by Mariachi Plata. A special melody was also played to honor mothers in attendance for Mother's Day. Jesus Atondo addressed his fellow classmates encouraging them to continue pursuing their goals. The closing of the ceremony was done by Gabriel Galindo Center Director congratulating the “Class of 2016.�

Rio Rico High School Graduation The Rio Rico High School graduation ceremony was held on Thursday, May 26th at the school stadium. The Rio Rico Marching Hawks played, while the graduates came down the stairways in their customized graduation caps. From within every angle of the stadium attendees were able to see the graduates in their red & black caps and gowns fill the seats located in the middle of the stadium. The commencement was followed by speeches from special community leaders, with words of encouragement for the graduates to pursue their goals. Graduates sat patiently awaiting the announcement of the diplomas. As the names began to be announced cheers from the crowd dominated the airwaves, one by one the graduates approached the center stage to pick up their diplomas. There was no need for words to express the excitement, and pride they felt their smiles, and eyes said it all. Family, friends, and school faculty were there to provide their support to the graduates. Towards the closing of the event graduates threw the caps to the air to express their accomplishment a symbol of closing one more chapter in their life, while opening a brand new one filled with hope and dreams. Congratulations to the Class of 2016.

“A NIGHT TO REMEMBER� NOGALES HIGH SCHOOL 2016 GRADUATION Stepping onto the Nogales High School Stadium on May 20, 2016, was an exhilarating feeling. The energy of the people was present and it was well felt. The parents and countless family members that were there in support, along with the school staff, district members, photographers, journalists, and law enforcement/ security personnel all exuberated a sense of pride when it came to be there for the young adults or soon to be adult graduates. As I approached the gate to step onto the field, so that I may get a closer look for a possible good photograph while writing down a few good key words the speakers said throughout the celebration, I became one with the unity of the beautiful class of 2016. The district members along with the principal and assistant principal of NHS gave their usual speeches that I remember from my graduation 5 years ago, but it was the class president that added the flavor to the already bland lines the leaders spoke into the microphone. The sweet face of America Camille McDaniel, took the stage and delivered a pleasant tone of voice, which had a hidden essence of melancholy for the obvious reason that this was the night she would lose many of her relations she established with her fellow peers. That is what made the night sing. .

As she spoke of the memories that they all shared throughout their high school career, she opened the hearts for all the mixed emotions to flow in through each individual. Lady McDaniel reminded that if even those memories will become faded in time as they embrace the true chapter of their adult lives, they will resonate deep within and become some of the strongest pillars in life that will support them in their many endeavors of reality. Her voice sang with pure highs and earthy mid tones, as the senses of every graduate became fixated on her heart felt speech. Lady McDaniel also reminded that the light should never be left in darkness for even the smallest light could shine through the deepest darkness. These lines from such youth are what outshined even the highest leader that spoke on this marvelous night of great sadness and sheer happiness. Along with my note taking and a few good photos, the night could never be compared as if you were in person witnessing history being made at our very own Nogales High School Apache Stadium. When the night grew older and the many graduates have finally received their diplomas and awards, the concluding words from the principal open the skies to a yellow and white cloud of confetti that rained over the graduates, and other bystanders.

With such color and joyous cries the young ladies and gentlemen the night erupted with cries of pain and pride for the youth has in a sense ended and the maturity has began. With a knot in my throat my eyes raked the sea of students enshrouded by the sea of paper flakes and it was an exhilarating moment to be there standing a mere few yards away. The music that echoed throughout the stadium became a perfect accompaniment to the voices of many. This will be a night that will remain deeply embedded in the minds and hearts of everyone that was present during the unforgettable accomplishment the Nogales High School Graduating Class of 2016. May destiny take them towards great heights and never let them plunder without a helping hand waiting to bring them back into the light. Written By: Daniel Grambs Jr.

New Healthy Student Grant Director The Santa Cruz County Office of the Superintendent provides an array of resources for teacher and students. One specific goal is to also provide students with an environment that helps promote healthy habits. The superintendent’s office is currently working with counselors, teachers, and parents towards creating a healthy environment for students in Santa Cruz County. The superintendent’s office received funding for a 3 year grant, which is focused on promoting health, and wellness in the schools. The grant funding for Healthy Student Project began June of 2015 and will continue throughout May of 2018. The program targets grades K-5th elementary schools throughout the school district.The director of the grant Ismael Morales currently works closely with school counselors, and behavioral health organizations within Santa Cruz County to ensure students needs are being met. The program focuses on the social, emotional, and physical development of students to ensure they are successful in school. Mr. Morales is currently working with 5 school counselors to help address students at risk through the Healthy Students Grant.

On Wednesday March 30th, Ismael Morales and school counselors from the district gathered to discuss program implementation of the Healthy Students Grant. They will be working towards the planning of school activities, and events for elementary students helping students engage in making healthy decisions. Counselors have been working with students on character building specifically the Six Pillars of Character and the PBIS Tiers 1-4. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, which are the core principles of avoiding risky behaviors. The Six Pillars of Character are geared towards teaching students respect, responsibility, fairness, trustworthiness, caring, and citizenship. PBIS curriculum is geared towards teaching students core principles. PBIS in an early intervention method teaching students appropriate behaviors. It is a scientifically researched based early intervention multi-tier model of service delivery, which helps to monitor and assess student progress. Both of these approaches are essential in helping high risk children develop appropriate behaviors. “Counselors will work with high risk students, providing group and one-on-one interventions to help improve student academic proficiencies, decision making, goal setting, and help them stay focused on their education,” said Morales.

People that "Echo" Ismael Morales On September of 2015, the Office of the Santa Cruz Superintendent offered the position of the Virtual Response Director to Ismael Morales. The Virtual Response Program is a security web based program, which implements the safety of all children for all schools in Santa Cruz County. "I am really fortunate to work with such a professional team, and good people. said Ismael Morales. Mr. Morales has been working extensive experience working in behavioral health. He started his career working at the Mariposa Community Health Centers in 2003, as a Program Coordinator for the Disease Prevention Program. He worked there for 2 years before transferring over to the behavioral health field in 2005, where he worked as a case manager for 8 years. In 2013, he had an opportunity to work as an assistant manager for CSL Plasma Pharmaceuticals in Nogales, Arizona.
Mr. Morales enjoyed working for this billion-dollar company even though it was challenging but at the same time rewarding as he was able to learn about the importance of management in an organization. "I was born and raised here in Santa Cruz County. I spent my childhood and adult years here. Santa Cruz County is special because I have family, and friends here. Our border town is unique in many ways. I consider myself fortunate to live in a small community that is rich in culture, and traditions that make us unique. It is important for us to continue working together to make our community a strong and prosperous place to live. We need to play a more active role within our community if we want to improve it. My future plans are to continue working coordinating county grants, while enhancing my management skills, said Ismael Morales.

Rebuilding Together Santa Cruz County Teams with Sears to Provide Critical Home Repairs Heroes at Home project complete renovations for a local veteran’s home. Rebuilding Together*Santa Cruz County provided critical repairs to a U.S. Veteran home, Mr. Jose Luis Jacquez and his family. More than 12 volunteers from Rebuilding Together and The Santa Cruz Board of Realtors, and Sheriff Tony Estrada, along with our volunteers came to help volunteer at the rebuild project, completed the home repairs, new roof done by local contractor Alex Garcia from Garcia builders, and yard work, and house painting. As part of Heroes at Home, a program created through the collaboration of Sears and Rebuilding Together to improve the lives of veterans and their families through extensive home rehabilitations. Marcela Chavez, Executive Director for Rebuilding Together*Santa Cruz County was very grateful for all the participation from the community and especially to our volunteers and board members and the Jacquez family for being so grateful , and supportive! The project was on Saturday April 30th, 2016.

Tuesday, May 17th Pierson Vocational High School held its commencement graduation at the school gymnasium for the "Class of 2016." The ceremony opened with graduates walking into the beautifully decorated white and blue gymnasium. One by one the graduates entered the gymnasium wearing their white & blue cap and gowns. The ceremony later followed On with the salutation of the flag, following the national anthem by Whitney Houston's live performance track back from the super bowl. Family and friends sat in the bleachers, while school faculty sat across the graduates providing their support while at the same time celebrating their accomplishments. Those in attendance demonstrated their enthusiasm with cheers, and shouts outs to the graduates. Graduates faces were filled with great pride they are finally closing one chapter of their lives while opening another. Once the student address came to a closing it was now time to name each graduate up to the podium to receive diploma. Towards the closing the master of ceremony presented the "Class of 2016."
Fiestas de Mayo Pageant On May 7th the City of Nogales hosted in down town Morley Avenue its Nogales the Cinco de Mayo festivities. The festivities included music, food, and dancing. The highlight of the event is the coronation of the Fiestas de Mayo Queen. Four young ladies from the Santa Cruz County School District were selected to participate in the event. Participants were selected not only for their physical attributes but also for the passion towards community service. The four participants that competed in this pageant were Amber Armenta, Noraly Gonzalez, Sophia Paz, and Sydney Danielson. The winner of the Fiestas de Mayo Pageant was Amber Armenta.
