EUROPEAN ATHLETICS PRESIDENT’S WELCOME MESSAGE BORÅS 2019 I am very pleased to welcome everyone to the European Athletics U20 Championships here in Borås.

This competition returns to Sweden after a gap of just four years, with Eskilstuna having been the host in 2015, and I think this fact alone shows what a big contribution Sweden makes to European Athletics.

I have fond memories of that championship as it was one of the first European Athletics competitions on the calendar after I became President a few months earlier. It was an outstanding event, both on the track and off it, and I feel confident that it will be the same here.

Some of the medallists from four years ago have already proven themselves at the highest level.

Belarus’ Elvira Herman won the 100m hurdles in Eskilstuna and repeated that feat when taking the European Athletics Championships gold medal in the same event last summer in Berlin. My Norwegian compatriot Karsten Warholm won two silvers in the 400m and decathlon at this championship before his stunningly successful switch to the 400m hurdles, and most of you know the rest of the story.

In addition, a number of other medallists from Eskilstuna also climbed the podium in Berlin so you can see that as well as providing outstanding competition in their own right the European Athletics U20 Championships are also a glance into the crystal ball and identify many of the future stars of our sport.

the Netherlands last December, that these championships were one of his main targets for this summer, After so many accolades already as a teenager, competing here will be a fitting finale to this outstanding athlete’s U20 career on the track.

European Athletics are very grateful to the Svenska Friidrottsförbundet – the Swedish athletics federation – the town of Borås as well as all the officials and volunteers with the Local Organising Committee for all their hard work and commitment to staging this event.

Some of the athletes who will be competing here in Borås have already made an impact in this age-group. No less than 11 European athletes who won medals at the IAAF World U20 Championships Tampere 2018 are still eligible to compete in this age group.

If I can be patriotic for a moment, I was particularly thrilled when I heard Jakob Ingebrigtsen say, just after he won his third European U20 cross country title in

SWEDISH ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S WELCOME MESSAGE Dear Guests of the European Athletics U20 Championships, I am very happy and proud to welcome you to Borås and what will be a both memorable and spectacular event – for the athletes as well as the audience. Athletes from 50 nations, all over Europe, have looked forward to these championships for a long time. And so have I. Spectators from the area can look forward to watching the new and exciting young generation of Swedish athletes fighting for medals, with support from a big crowd. Among the ones to look out for are Tilde Johansson, Carl Bengtström and Ragnar Carlsson. All of them have had a great indoor season and are looking very promising for the future.

Along with them are of course many new international rising stars. I hope that we will be able to enjoy the participation of the fantastic Norwegian middle distance runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

When visiting the championships I also recommend people to experience the wonderful city center, to take a stroll along river Viskan and enjoy the numerous sculptures and massive street art murals.

There are also a lot of reputed museums and a fantastic zoo if you have more spare time during your stay.

A junior championship is the first steps onto the road to a career as a professional athlete, giving promising stars the opportunity to test their wings and getting new and valuable experiences. But it is not only the athletes who have been training and preparing for these championships. The local club, IK Ymer and the athletics community of Borås have a long commitment to strengthening the sport locally, with an aim to reach and engage more people in an active lifestyle and maybe spark a dream of an athletics career. The coaches and club officials work professionally together with this common goal in mind. The city of Borås have made noticeable and valuable investments in the arena, the sport facilities and the surrounding event area.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you – European Athletics, the city of Borås, the members of the organising committee, sponsors and all volunteers for making these championships possible.

Now, let´s have fun and together, charge a lot of positive energy and pass it over to all athletes giving their best at the track and in the field. Borås and Swedish Athletics welcome all of you with a big smile and we hope you will enjoy your stay!

WELCOME TO BORÅS Borås, the city by Viskan river, is a thriving and vibrant place full of colour, nature, art, and design - and in July 2019, the home to Europe’s finest in athletics. As Sweden’s 13th city with over 112.000 inhabitants, Borås perfectly balances between being a big city and a small town. Big enough to encompass a wide range of entertainments, culture and services but small enough to have everything at close range.

Textile heritage

Borås has long been a city of sports. The city is blessed with one of the best basketball teams in Sweden, Borås Basket, as well as the football team IF Elfsborg, who always gather a great crowd at Ryavallen and Borås Arena. The arena is proudly embellished with a mural of the city’s famous football player Anders Svensson.

At fashion and textile fairs across the world, Borås is a well renowned place. The Swedish School of Textiles and Nordiska Textilakademin, both based in Borås, are two examples of leading Swedish schools for the textile designers of the future. The textile tradition is even more relevant than ever today, with Textile Fashion Center, Borås and Sweden’s international centre for fashion, textiles and design, at the heart of the city.

Many stars have stepped out onto the ground of Ryavallen over the years, to win championship titles and break records. One of athletics’ greatest, the Olympic champion Carolina Klüft, was born in Borås and has competed at Ryavallen several times. Who will be the next star to reach new heights during the European Athletics U20 Championships 2019?

Borås is also the centre of Nordic mail order, with many well-known businesses based here.

Examples are H&M, Gina Tricot, Ellos Group and Consortio Fashion Group, which includes Bubbleroom, Cellbes and Halens. Millions of packages are sent from the area every year.

A city with ambition

But the city is not only a place for sports. If you mention Borås to anybody with an interest in art, they will soon rave about the city’s fantastic museums, sculptures and street art. Most everyone in Sweden knows of the nine meter tall bronze sculpture of Pinocchio – Walking to Borås by Jim Dine, and other sculptures in town include, but are not limited to, House of Knowledge by Jaume Plensa, Declination by Tony Cragg, Vibration by Xavier Veilhan, and Non-Violence by Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd.

Borås is simply, and always has been, a city with a lot of ambition. And we are building like never before. Cafés and restaurants are popping up on every street-corner, next to tall buildings and event arenas. Borås is a city full of experiences waiting to be discovered.

Not least Borås Zoo, one of the best zoos in Sweden, indoor and outdoor swimming areas in the middle of the city, and a beautiful countryside with vast forests always within easy reach.

The street art festival No Limit has also contributed to the vibrant cityscape, with international artists transforming the city into a giant outdoor gallery with everything from installations to 25 meter tall murals. The art is best enjoyed on a guided tour, but wherever you go you will experience colourful and thought provoking works of art, whether it be on the side of buildings, in the city park or in the main square.

The city is also famous for its fashion and design, and the local region has enjoyed a solid reputation as a centre of textiles for decades, even centuries. The textile industry made Borås into one of Sweden’s most expansive cities in the 1900’s, and in the 1960’s, the industry employed two thirds of the industrial workers in Borås.

VISA INFORMATION Participants from the following countries require a visa to enter Sweden and Schengen area:

ALB*** — ARM** — AZE** — BLR — BIH*** — GEO*** — KOS — MKD*** — MDA*** — MNE*** — RUS** — SRB*** — TUR* — UKR*** *Holder of a Diplomatic Passport or a Service Passport does not require a visa. Visa-free travel also applies to Turkish citizens who hold special passports. **Holder of a Diplomatic Passport does not require a visa for a short stay according to an agreement between the EC and respectively state. ***Holder of a biometric Passport does not require a visa.

TRANSPORTATION Göteborg Landvetter Airport (GOT) is the official airport for the European Athletics U20 Championships Borås 2019.

• Göteborg Landvetter Airport (42 km, 40 min drive to/from the venue) Federations may request transport from/to alternative airports and/or train stations.

The LOC will then inform about the cost of providing such transport and will need approval from the team leader before confirming the service.

LOC will provide transportation from the official airport to the official accommodation venues and back, as well as local transportation between all the official venues (training venue, competition venue, official functions venues etc.). Shuttle times will be available at the Information Desks at the hotels.

TEAM ENTRIES The European Athletics Event Management System for the entries is accessible at the following link: https://arena.european-athletics.org. Member Federations’ entries manager shall use their already known individual and personalised access.

Each European Athletics Member Federation may enter only those athletes who have received certification for having completed the European Athletics Anti-Doping Education Programme – I Run Clean. The certification is to be achieved by all athletes in adition to the entry standards for the event they are entered in.
