RETREAT HOMES

Founded in 1980, Booth Hansen is a nationally-recognized architecture, planning, and interiors firm. As a medium sized firm, we provide project and design leadership with experienced principal architects who are engaged and attentive to the needs of every project no matter the size. Through commercial, cultural and educational projects, as well as multi-family and single-family residences, our contribution to the built environment aims to capture the unique quality of each project. We address the functional needs of our clients while seeking a direct connection with the human spirit through architecture’s timeless, poetic language.

We believe in the power of collaboration among designers, clients, stakeholders, and consultants to produce successful results and products of enduring quality. Clarity in communication leads to an equally defined design process, in which many voices come together in a single vision. As architects, we are agents of that vision, carefully evolving it from concept to construction. With every project, Booth Hansen looks to create beautiful places that people treasure.

The courtyards that result from this configuration are extensions of the interior spaces, made accessible by the operable glass facade that brings in natural light and ventilation.

The Palm Springs House is embedded in a San Jacinto Mountain promontory that overlooks the Coachella Valley and mountain ranges beyond. The home celebrates its setting, framing views of dramatic desert landscapes while creating direct connections to nature.

Two offset linear masses, linked by a light-filled kitchen, contain living and sleeping spaces respectively.

Deep roof overhangs and the relocation of existing olive trees provide shade to all glass exposures. An infinity-edge pool reinforces the floating roof lines. Views are caught in reflections off the glass and water, changing with every shift in perspective and passing hour. The centerpiece of the home is a forty-two foot long painting, stretching across the living spaces. Designed with the painting in mind, the clean lines and limited palette of the house were chosen to showcase the massive triptych. With smooth white walls and concrete floors, the interior finishes invoke the neutral backdrop of an art gallery.

With its clean lines and limited palette, the home serves as a backdrop for the panoramic views and owners’ art collection.

BEVERLY SHORES RESIDENCEBEVERLYSHORES,IN

Nestled between the sand dunes of Lake Michigan to the north and a steep wooded terrain to the south, the two-level home opens and connects to both environments. With the shifting sand dunes creating the topography of the site, the board-formed concrete base recedes into the rising woods while the all-glass living room and master suite above become a raised platform, or aerie, with views of both breathtaking landscapes. Stacking the home onto two levels not only creates a greater visual and physical connection to both environments, but also allows the house to occupy only 9% of the site, with over 76% remaining as undisturbed dune grass and woodlands.

The aerie’s connection to the outdoors is further enhanced by a high undulating roofline and deep hemlocklined overhangs. The cantilevered slab over the lower level floats the living room above the ground plane and enhances the sense of connection to the lake. A shift in the floor plan creates access points to a screened porch and pool terrace on opposite ends of the living room, while carving space to allow existing dunes and trees to remain in place.

Thebelow.first floor of the main house is cantilevered four feet over the basement which maximizes the floor plate, while minimizing site impact. The main house, garage, and walkways are arranged in such a way that they preserve the existing trees and woodland habitat and provide minimal disruption to the adjacent natural plantings.

Preservation of the natural dune habitat was a top priority of this private retreat. Rather than create one large structure, two smaller structures were designed with small footprints, allowing for contiguous natural habitat to be preserved. Raised walkways greet visitors and guide them from the garage to the main home. The supporting piers of the walkways allow for the continuation of the natural habitat

THE CABINNEWHOUSEBUFFALO,MI

Situated on the edge of Lake Michigan, this property contains both dense woods and a bluff to the sandy shore. The owners wished for a gathering place for their multi-generational family to escape their busy city lives. The site approach and the architecture are integrated together through a central entry axis, where visitors are welcomed with a lush courtyard. Lake waters beckon through the sliding glass doors of the porch connector. Four cedar-clad cabins, two on each side of the axis, are peaked to reflect the surrounding Midwestern architecture. Flat, zinc-clad connector spaces link the cabins together, providing both separation and definition.

Dramatic skylights bring in natural light that ebbs and flows throughout the space. The grand scale of the vaulted living space contrasts the more intimate porch and family room in the connectors. The separation of the multiple cabins fulfills the needs of the large family, while maintaining privacy.

Durable materials and neutral finishes within the interior reduce maintenance while evoking the native beach landscape.

Each cabin offers a specific function: storage, guests, gathering, and a master suite. Large windows and glass doors maximize views to the lake and woods, allowing the home to “breathe the lake air.”

ZINC HOUSE LAKE BLUFF, IL

This prairie house is comprised of two structures, one horizontally connecting with the prairie to the east, while the other connects the east prairie with the west orchard. Together, they create a space to experience both sunrise and sunset. The Zinc House is a simple form clad in black zinc, ribbed roofing and horizontal siding. Oversized French doors open on both sides of the main room. Cypress flooring and sills, unpainted plaster, and sandblasted stainless steel hardware create a gentle character that reflects the sky and prairie.

DESERT RESIDENCEPALMSPRINGS,CA

For this desert home, the traditional courtyard typology was split apart to integrate the desert plant life with the interior experience. Six distinct pavilions make up the structure of the house, oriented to maximize the views of the San Jacinto Mountains southwest of the property. Large steel canopies float above each pavilion, framing the mountain views and providing shade from the desert sun. A combination of small, medium, and large gardens and terraces create additional living space with outdoor rooms for private living or entertaining. The main living spaces and the master suite are joined together with a 90foot long gallery. This hall displays art and sculpture, highlighted by the skylight spanning the length of the space.

SAWYER RESIDENCESAWYER,MI

This 3,000-square-foot home in Sawyer, Michigan is perched on the crest of a sand dune along the coast of Lake Michigan. The structure is meant to honor the prominent site and surrounding landscape, so it sits at the end of a winding private drive, through a low lying, wooded area. The classically inspired home boasts a distinctly modern, open plan including a master suite, 2 guest bedrooms, state-of-the-art kitchen, living room and a screened porch overlooking stunning views of the lake.

Doors, hardware and sinks from an existing home on this property were repurposed throughout to add character and a feeling of authenticity to the interiors. The earth tones of the interiors complement the exterior palate of natural wood shingles, a zinc-steel roof and minimal ornamentation. Floor to ceiling windows maximize light and open to views of the dunes and lakefront to create a true oasis for our client.

CANOE POINTISLANDRESIDENCEINONTARIO,CANADA

The design solution incorporated three black zinc clad volumes situated parallel to the water, sited to follow the natural contours of the land, and oriented to accentuate views to the surrounding area. Their dark color allows the cabins to recede into the shoreline forest, thereby intentionally diminishing the presence of the structures when viewed from the water.

Programming for this 4,500-square-foot group of cabins includes 5 bedrooms, 4 baths, powder room, great room, study/library and garage. A central living cabin holds the living and dining spaces and opens onto a waterfront deck. Glass bridge connectors on either side reach to two sleeping cabins.

The cabins utilize a raised pier foundation, respecting the site by maintaining the natural topography, allowing snow melt and rainwater to drain naturally into the lake.Deeper In the woods, a 1500 sf 2-level detached garage surprises and delights by housing a private dance studio on the second floor for our client’s wife, a famous flamenco dancer. Four sides of glass allow dancing among the treetops along with a view back to the water.

LAKESIDE RESIDENCE LAKESIDE, MI

Uniquely located at the end of a meadow and on the shore of Lake Michigan, the site commands dramatic views in all directions. A new home was imagined to take advantage of this position. Axial orientation provides a panoramic lake view upon entering the soaring two story volume for living and dining. Light spills into the volume via two skylights. An entertaining kitchen and family room open to the lake through generous sliding glass doors, creating a free flow of space.

SAND VALLEYNEKOOSA,WI

Located in the middle of 12,000 acres of sand dunes in central Wisconsin lives Sand Valley, a year round premier destination well known for its world-class golf courses: Sand Valley, Mammoth Dunes, The Lido, and The Sandbox. Sand Valley is designed for traveling golfers and pays homage to the great heathland courses of London.

Booth Hansen has designed multiple high-end homes at the resort. Each project offers grand private accommodations with simple, elegant finishes and panoramic views of the dramatic sand dunes. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, screened-in porches, private terraces, and hiking trails nearby all offer a further connection to the expansive, serene Wisconsin landscape.
