CABARET QUEENSLAND CABARET FESTIVAL

The inaugural Queensland Cabaret Festival celebrates the best of local, Australian and international cabaret.

Join us for nights filled with hilarious, heartwarming and shocking storytelling, songs that can warm or break your heart, and some of the most entertaining antics you’ll ever see on a stage. We invite you to stay up past bedtime, throw on some sequins, grab a drink with friends and enjoy storytelling from around the world.

Building on the success of Brisbane Cabaret Festival, Queensland Cabaret Festival is presented across a variety of venues as a

collaboration between Brisbane Powerhouse, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, The Arts Centre Gold Coast, Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts, The Ipswich Civic Centre and Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. The festival reaches across Queensland stages and celebrates the contribution of Queensland’s cabaret community. From established to emerging artists, local performers and storytellers will take to the stage and thrill you with their unique stories and compelling talents.

KRIS STEWART AND ALISON ST. LEDGER FESTIVAL DIRECTORS

MELANIE SAFKA: PEOPLE IN THE FRONT ROW TOUR

Witness the charm and talent of this legendary performer.

Melanie will take the stage to perform her hits, new compositions and tell stories from her extraordinary career.

Melanie first shot to stardom with her unforgettable appearance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and she toured to Australia five times during the 70s. Melanie’s singles ‘Brand New Key’ (Roller Skate Song), ‘Candles In The Rain’, ‘Peace Will Come’, ‘Look What They’ve Done To My Song Ma’ and ‘Ruby Tuesday’ have all sat on the Australian charts for weeks. ‘Brand New Key’ was a number one hit in Australia and sat on the charts for 18 weeks in 1971. In the USA, Melanie has had 13 top 40 hits, including three number ones.

A new generation was exposed to Melanie’s ‘People In The Front Row’ as the sample behind the massive worldwide hit ‘Nosebleed Section’ from Hilltop Hoods. This intimate evening of song will feature

Melanie’s son Beau Jarred Schekeryk on guitar, Andrew Worboys on piano, Dave Hatch on drums and Tina Harris on bass.

“People who have made an impact on the music world can be recognized by just one part of their name. Lennon, McCartney, Dylan, Jagger etc. Here’s a name for you: MELANIE.”

ROLLING STONE

SWEET DREAMS: SONGS BY ANNIE LENNOX

The one-man pop cabaret masterpiece that will play with your heart.

Michael Griffiths IS Annie Lennox. No accent, costume or wig. Annie’s lyrics have been plumbed for new meaning, melodies reinterpreted, and songs peppered with candid musings and remembrances from the moody songstress herself.

Encounter Annie’s triumphs and heartbreak as told through her bittersweet lyrics. From the gender-bending early days as one-half of 80s new wave sensation Eurythmics through to her stunning solo career, revisit unforgettable songs like ‘Why,’ ‘Love Is a Stranger,’ ‘Walking on Broken Glass’ and ‘There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)’. Sweet Dreams: Songs by Annie Lennox won Best Cabaret at the Adelaide Fringe 2014.

“Griffiths is extraordinary.”

Eighties pop and hot jazz: one girl’s trash is another girl’s treasure…

Direct from a critically acclaimed season in Edinburgh, Ali McGregor’s new show Alchemy draws on her years as a diva with Opera Australia and her love of trashy 80s pop music. The show features new hybrids of popular songs, jazz standards and blues classics.

Ali is one of this country’s most versatile singers with an incredible vocal range. In Alchemy she’ll bring a truly individual flavour to some of

your favourite songs. If you’ve ever wanted to see mash-ups and genre-defying versions of Madonna, Salt’n’Pepa and INXS sung in the style of a 40s siren then Alchemy is your perfect night out.

NOVA NOIR WITH KIM SMITH

Electro-pop meets Weimar cabaret in this direct-from New York hit.

Award-winning New Yorkbased cabaret performer Kim Smith conjures the glitter and doom of Weimar-era Germany, interspersed with original electro-pop tunes and revamped dance floor classics.

Mining his debut album, Nova, Smith gives his own songs a decadent 1920s treatment and performs them alongside his inventive mash-ups of everyone from

Friedrich Hollaender, Kurt Weill and Mischa Spoliansky, to Madonna, The Supremes, Kylie Minogue and myriad others.

Join Smith and critically acclaimed accordionist and music director Benjamin Ickies for Nova Noir and celebrate the future of cabaret.

“Completely stellar… slyly subversive.”

Nightingale takes the emotive and compelling lyrics from some of The Boss’s iconic songs – ‘Hungry Heart’, ‘Human Touch’ and ‘Born to Run’ – and interweaves them with the true stories of Australian women forced to put their children up for adoption in the 60s and 70s.

Born to Run is a captivating journey driven by a woman’s need to keep running. Backed by heartfelt acoustic arrangements, you will be moved by a performance which is both intimate and global.

THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS

Hilarious and charming original songs that will make you glad these things

haven’t happened to you.

After the success of her debut show, Waitressing... and Other Things I Do Well, Gillian Cosgriff is doing less waitressing and a lot more of the other things. These may include: drinking, procrastinating, voicemail messages, love, sex, dreams, humiliation, grammar, hangovers and Band-Aids.

Gillian Cosgriff’s new show is about trying to improve yourself and become a better person, but constantly struggling against your true nature. Through her charming and funny original songs, Gillian asks, “How can you have nice things when your nature is to be clumsy and careless?”

This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things won the Best Cabaret Award at Melbourne Fringe Festival 2013.

I CAN KEEP A SECRET

A world of delicious mash-ups, where Tchaikovsky meets Kate Bush and Kylie crash tackles Carmen.

Enter an intimate confessional box for a musical celebration of the quirky and the unexpected. Hiding your lust for Daryl Somers? Pretending that pesky STD doesn’t itch? Eat the chocolate frosting before it makes the cake? You’re not alone.

I Can Keep A Secret combines the dirty and flirty talents of Brisbane’s Alicia Cush, Bethan Ellsmore, Arlie McCormick and Judy Hainsworth. Gallivanting through a far-wandering songbook, these femme fatales will draw you into their fabulously flawed world and take you to the deepest, darkest corners of Portishead, Sondheim and Gotye. Salacious musical revelations in four-part harmony, duets and solos provide the red velvet carpet to their secrets. You’ll laugh with delight and cry with melancholy as they weave stories into a champagne-soaked afternoon of peccadillo and peculiarity.

ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS: THE ERIN MINOGUE STORY

An entirely untrue story featuring some true Minogue hits.

In the early 80s, three young Melbourne girls were on the path to stardom. The first was YTT darling Dannii Minogue. The second was Kylie, who shot to fame on Neighbours and instantly acquired about 100 million adoring fans.

But what about the third, their younger sister, Erin Minogue? The forgotten sister.

Now Erin has her chance –tonight. On this very stage, she could be so lucky.

A one-woman contemporary comic cabaret featuring a swag of classic Kylie and Dannii hits, this is an eye-opening stagedbiopic of an extraordinary life unled, revealing untold insight into a celebrity sibling who never existed, based on an entirely untrue story.

“Erin is the Minogue sister we didn’t know we loved until now.”
