Queensland Cabaret Festival is a co-presentation between Brisbane Powerhouse, Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Queensland Cabaret Foundation Design & illustrations by Sean Dowling

Cabaret comes in many forms, but at its heart, it is a form of storytelling. It can be stunningly beautiful as well as thrilling and hilarious. It’s an ever-changing evolution of ideas and performances, a mix of music, song, dance, comedy and movement. Many think of cabaret as an evening stroll down a Paris cobblestone street, falling into a small wine bar and listening to Edith Piaf covers. However, it is so much more. Originating in the city of love, it has evolved and taken over performance spaces across the world, offering intimate, heartfelt performances, soulful recitals and comical narratives.

Queensland Cabaret Festival 2017 invites you behind the red velvet curtain to discover the scintillating world of cabaret! From spine-tingling home-grown talents, to international sensations, this year’s Festival tells stories of love, loss, passion and fame. Performing across three venues this year, immerse yourself in the sublime acoustic of QPAC’s Concert Hall, feel the heat with the intimacy of Brisbane Powerhouse, then discover new and exciting local talent at Queensland Multicultural Centre.

Iconic Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly and magnetic Irish chanteuse Camille O’Sullivan pay tribute to the words of W.B Yeats and other great Irish poets in this premiere collaboration between two inimitable artists.

Ancient Rain combines original songs, music, and spoken word, inspired by more than a century of Irish writing.

Paul and Camille inhabit a range of characters in this mesmerising performance, revealing a tapestry of themes, from the cost of love, the price of independence, to the inadequacy of faith and the power of forgiveness. Camille O’Sullivan’s majestic vocal command and Paul Kelly’s ingeniously understated yet evocative lyricism unite here in the service of stories of love, loss and redemption. A stellar cast of some of Brisbane’s greatest songstresses combine for a night to remember to celebrate the Leader of the Pack, Frank Sinatra. Reliving the Las Vegas days of the world’s most famous entertainer, these ladies are doing it their way with dancers and a big swing band, just as Frankie did back in the 1960’s live at the Sands Hotel Copa Room.

Regarded by Andrew Lloyd Webber as “...the best, the best Christine certainly!” in The Phantom of the Opera, this international award-winning music theatre superstar will wow audiences with her magnificent voice, star power, and captivating personality. It’s no wonder Lloyd Webber asked her to perform Christine in the award-winning and highly acclaimed The Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary Production at the Royal Albert Hall, as well as the spectacular Las Vegas production.

Sierra is also a Disney Princess, having portrayed Ariel in The Little Mermaid on Broadway to great acclaim, and recently completed a season as Principal Mullins in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s adaption of the Jack Black favourite School of Rock.

Over the past three years a small group of Queensland songwriters have travelled across the state talking with wives whose partners have served in military conflict over the past 60 years. These deeply personal stories have been turned into songs and performed across the country, including sell out performances at the Sydney Opera House.

These are the true stories of some extraordinary women who have in their own way shaped our nation. Told by a group of remarkable songwriters, including Australian Music Prize nominee and vocal powerhouse Jackie Marshall, Women in Docs’ Roz Pappalardo, all round entertainer and fast rising new talent Emma Bosworth, as well as Kristy Apps and Deb Suckling.

A night of great music, intriguing stories and some of the best male voices in the business. Back in the 90’s a small group of ‘blokes’ got together to stage a series of concerts called Blokes in Voice, following the success of WIV presents… and The Queensland Cabaret Foundation have joined forces to document the amazing history of Women In Voice by creating a coffee table book called “FindingOurVoice–TheStoryof Women in Voice”. Meet Nigel and Ross – together they are The Dustbin Hoffmans. It’s hard to believe that only 35 years ago these boys hadn’t even met and now after waiting for the invention of the personal computer, the compact disk, the Internet, the smartphone, Twitter and Facebook, they are now Australia’s most experienced boy band. Their music evokes deep feelings of happiness, adventure, irony, fun and Brisbanality. They celebrate dysfunction, mediocrity, life’s little banalities and the shortest highway in the world.
