HAPPILY ENGAGED

As a B Corp™, we strengthen our commitment to creating a lasting impact with the coffee-growing community and supporting farmers’ livelihoods.

But trust us, you will like it… we know you, remember? “

WE KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT YOU.

Or rather, we have a feeling we know something about you: We suspect, you care about the environment and want to make a positive difference for a greener world. Right?

Then you will love Concept Green at Absalon Hotel.

It’s a unique, green initiative that rewards you for skipping the room cleaning service. Yes, you read that right: You can help save water, energy, and cleaning products by simply choosing not to have your room cleaned – and then we will bring you a little gift to say thank you.

What is the gift, you ask? Well, we won’t tell you that. It’s our secret. Besides, the gift keeps changing, so you never know what you will get.

But trust us, you will like it… we know you, remember?

That’s not all, though.

Concept Green is not Absalon Hotel’s only commitment to the environment. We also have the Green Key certification, which means that we meet a number of strict environmental standards, such as serving organic food and using eco-friendly cleaning products.

So, when you stay at Absalon Hotel, you can feel good about doing your part for the planet and yourself.

And don’t forget, you will also get a nice surprise along the way.

Absalon Hotel

A day in Copenhagen – by bike, naturally

HAVE YOU NOTICED that one thing all the locals do in Copenhagen?

That’s right; they ride bikes to get around. And you should too, as bikes give you the intense, unfiltered, and beautifully raw Copenhagen experience. Less touristy, more authentic.

So, here are our personal favourites and must-see spots for when you tour the city by bike.

Before you set off, though, give your day the best start by enjoying the hotel’s delicious breakfast buffet, complete with a nice hot cup of coffee. Then get your wheels out.

When you are ready, we suggest you start by pedalling straight to Queen Louise’s Bridge This is a favourite spot for locals to meet up.

As soon as you get there you understand why. Bike riders tend to make a pitstop here – especially when the Sun is out. You should too.

Before you get back on your bike, pay a visit to Kaffesalonen and spoil yourself with a nice cup of coffee. Also, don’t miss a memorable trip on the lake in one of their boats.

Once back on dry land, keep your wheels spinning and continue all the way to either The Botanical Garden – where you find yourself in a silent, relaxing “green zone” of trees, bushes, and lush grass.

Or visit The National Gallery of Denmark – and feast your eyes and mind on a cultivating doze of art from around the world. Next stop on your trip should be Amalienborg, home to the royal Danish family. Plan your day, so you get to see the changing of the guards at noon. While in the neighbourhood, snap a photo of the beautiful The Marble Church (also known as Frederik’s Church) along with pictures of The Amalie Garden and Copenhagen Opera House

Continue your journey – heading for Nyhavn, a historic street and waterfront district. The atmosphere resembles travelling back in time to a cosy 17th century snapshot of Copenhagen. If you have time to spare, also ride by The Royal Danish Playhouse and Ofelia Plads at the outskirts of Nyhavn.

Ready for more?

Good to hear. Then ride to Christianshavn and walk to the sky – or at least take the stairs all the way to the top of the Church of Our Saviour's spire. The view is just… well, we won’t tell you. You have to see for yourself. When you’re back down on street level, check out the vicinity – and enjoy the nostalgia of half-timbered houses in the ancient streets.

How does riding along the waterfront at Islands Brygge sound?

This is where you should go next. And you are in for at treat –even if the Sun isn’t out. The view here never disappoints. Just remember to step off the bike if you get too carried away by it… Now, it’s time you cross the Cykelslangen – The Bicycle Snake –a dedicated, combined bike lane and bridge. Ride it, heading for The Meatpacking District. Here, you absolutely have to try some of the great local food and beer before returning to the hotel and calling it a day.

ORGANIC TEA THE SCANDINAVIAN WAY

Making a cup of tea creates a calm and conscious moment for you to experience the smell, the taste and the enjoyment of the tea. Emeyu is all about small moments. Moments to enjoy, moments to care and moments to keep.

Imagine the power of a small moment.

Growing Up a Natural Born “Absaloner”

Interview with owner, Karen Nedergaard

WE SPOKE TO hotel owner Karen Nedergaard to hear her story.

This is what she shared with us…

Karen is the third generation of hotel owners in her family. Her grandparents opened Absalon Hotel in 1938, with only 11 rooms. Later, her father and uncle took over the hotel and expanded it to 161 rooms. They also bought another hotel across the street, which is known as Andersen Boutique Hotel.

“I have always been part of the hotel life,” Karen says. “I lived at Absalon Hotel when I was little, and worked here as a maid and café owner when I was a teenager.” Later, Karen went on to study and work at hotels in Switzerland, London, and other places in Europe.

In a World of Popular Bars, Organic Products, and Teddy Bears

In 2002, Karen became the manager of Absalon Hotel. She and her team refurbished the hotel and created a new bar, which is very popular among the locals. At Andersen Boutique Hotel guests can enjoy Wine Hour every day, with a free glass of wine while relaxing with a boardgame.

Both hotels have won the organic food label in silver. And there are Danish eco-products like Karmameju soap and shampoo in all rooms.

Andersen Boutique Hotel has a unique design, which covers everything from cushions to wallpaper. At the hotel they organise art exhibitions, Christmas markets, and charity events. The hotel is even ranked second in its category on Tripadvisor.

Karen breaks into a laugh and adds: “At Andersen Boutique Hotel there are also many teddy bears, which our guests love. The teddy bears were left by some French guests a long time ago. But now, they have become a trademark for the hotel. That’s why you are greeted by two giant teddy bears in the lobby.”

HOS OS KAN DU FORVENTE:

Visit Andersen Hotel – for a full boutique experience

WHEN YOU ARE looking for a memorable stay in Copenhagen, check out Andersen Hotel – a boutique hotel that offers you more than just a bed and a breakfast.

But what exactly makes it a boutique hotel?

Here are some of the features and characteristics that set it apart from more traditional hotels. —

First up, Andersen Hotel has a unique atmosphere. The hotel displays custom-made furniture, vibrant paintings by Danish artists, and quirky decorations that make it stand out from chain hotels with more standardised decor. In short, it feels like you are staying in a cosy, stylish home – rather than a bland and impersonal hotel room.

In addition, you will also have easy access to local attractions, shopping, and restaurants, as the hotel is conveniently located in the heart of the city.

Good times guaranteed. And fun. And cosy. And…

Regularly, the hotel arranges unique events, tours, or other activities that give you a memorable experience beyond just a stay at a hotel. You can enjoy a bike ride around the city, a picnic in the park, a wine tasting session, a spa treatment, a cooking class, or a concert, depending on your preferences. Andersen Hotel is small and intimate. It has fewer rooms – and guests – which makes it feel more personal and friendly. So, don’t be surprised when you actually get to know the staff and the other guests.

Finally, Andersen Hotel is independently owned, which gives the owners more control over the design, atmosphere, and service. The hotel is not bound by more standardised guidelines that chain hotels usually follow. Instead, it reflects the owners’ vision and personality.

You will not regret paying Andersen Hotel a visit.

But if you do… you can always switch to Absalon Hotel, which has the same owners and is equally amazing. Just kidding, you too will love Andersen Hotel. We promise.

Meet

Lisa, our amazing receptionist trainee

Interview with receptionist trainee, Lisa Chairak

LUCKY FOR US – and for you too – Lisa joined the Absalon Hotel staff in April 2023. She is our skilled and cheerful receptionist trainee, and she’s always helpful and fun to be around. If you haven’t already met her, you really have something to look forward to.

But where will you find her at the hotel?

The short answer is: All over the place. Every day, Lisa is involved in a lot of different things, constantly learning new skills.

“On a typical workday, I’m checking guests in and out, helping them with special requests, and making them feel at home –especially if it’s their first visit to Copenhagen,” Lisa says. “And it can be anything, really. Guests might want an afternoon cake brought to their room, an extra pillow, or just a friendly chit-chat.”

Absalon Hotel was like a magnet to me
Absalon Hotel Copenhagen

LISA WAS LOOKING for a traineeship when she stumbled on Absalon Hotel. She was attracted by the fact that it was a smaller, family-run hotel – and not a big chain hotel. To her, Absalon had a more personal and cosy touch. This turned out to be true:

“I can feel the difference in the way the hotel is run and the atmosphere among the staff. Karen Nedergaard, the hotel owner, is present at the hotel every day. So is her son and husband, who run the bar. This shows how involved they are in the hotel. And how much they care about their guests’ wellbeing,” explains Lisa.

Before coming to Absalon Hotel, Lisa had never tried receptionist work before, and she was surprised by all the different tasks that the role entails. No two days are the same, so she must be prepared for anything. But this just makes her job even more thrilling, diverse, and colourful.

“A great personal bonus to me is, I’ve gained a lot of human and cultural understanding from interacting with guests from all over the world,” Lisa says. “One memorable experience for me was when I checked in a family from California, who stayed at the hotel for three days. I gave them suggestions for restaurants and things to see in the city. They were very nice and invited me to visit them in California.”

There is nothing that Lisa would change about Absalon Hotel, even if she could. You can ask her yourself. She loves her job and is proud to be part of the Absalon family.

And we are proud to have her.

THE FIRST GUEST to ever stay at Absalon Hotel came to visit back in 1938, when Erna Andersen founded the hotel and flung the doors open. Today, 85 years later, Karen Andersen – Erna’s granddaughter – runs the hotel. And in the years in between, Karen’s father and his brother were in charge. So, yeah, it’s a family thing.

The family feeling stays with you throughout your stay. Everyone working here is enthusiastic, welcoming, and easy going. And when you stroll the reception area, the hotel corridors, the bar, your room or anywhere else inside, you’ll notice it’s all cool, clean, and tastefully furnished and decorated.

Cool in a Warm and Friendly Way

But, despite the overall coolness, we’re never full of ourselves. Never stiff and self-congratulatory. Instead, always expect a good laugh and a helping hand. If you were to distil the essence and personality of Absalon Hotel – from past to present – this is what you would get.

Imagine for a second getting on a time machine and travelling back to our beginning, to the time of Erna Andersen. You would find yourself in a small, but comforting hotel with just 11 rooms for guests.

Once her two sons took over; they moved the hotel a few blocks – to a five-story building and blew new life into the hotel. And this is Absalon Hotel’s location to this day.

For comparison, if you travel back to the present again, you now get 161 rooms to choose from when you visit us.

Here at Absalon Hotel, you get treated like a friend and welcomed like family. Expect this to continue – even if you pop by later sometime; say, perhaps another three generations into the future…

Absalon Hotel

At Absalon “staff” is short for “friends and family”

Absalon Hotel is one of Copenhagen’s highest rated hotels. Not only because of its modern, comfortable rooms and central location. But also because of its staff, who almost resembles one big family – and always works to provide guests with the greatest experience while staying at the hotel.

The social glue is what makes the team and the hotel so special... “

“The social glue is what makes the team and the hotel so special,” says Front Office Manager Peter Sams from Absalon Hotel. He elaborates: “We are not just colleagues, but friends. When your shift is over, no one hardly ever leaves right away, as we want to catch up with our colleagues and friends taking over from us.”

A Devoted Club for Social Events and Team Building

“We work consciously with our culture. Also, in relation to the employees. We have a club, Absalon Club, where we make social events for the employees,” says hotel owner Karen Nedergaard. “It can be anything from bowling to cinema trips and parties. It helps to strengthen our cohesion and joy of working here.”

It is not only the employees who benefit from the cozy and well-run family hotel. The guests also experience all the advantages of being met and heard easily, with no hassle. Lisa, one of our hotel trainees, explains:

“There is not far from the guests’ wishes to action from the staff’s side. As employees, we have a lot of responsibility ourselves, so it is easy for us to help the guests. We will spontaneously make toasts for hungry guests late at night, take care of their children, or recommend restaurants and attractions in the city. In short, we do everything we can to make guests feel at home with us.”

Absalon Hotel is a hotel with warmth and humour, where the staff is a big part of the experience.
