Veterans Day Facts & Figures Veterans Day, once known as Armistice Day, was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, the anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1928, the United States Congress passed a resolution for Armistice Day to be an annual observation, and by 1938, the day became a national holiday. Differing from Memorial Day in May, Armistice Day, which would be renamed Veterans Day in 1954 under President Dwight Eisenhower, pays tribute to veterans who survived various wars. Memorial Day commemorates those veterans who lost their lives. Americans celebrate Veterans Day, while residents of Great Britain, Canada and Australia celebrate Remembrance Day. Those who want to learn more about Veterans Day can consider the following facts. • According to the American Community Survey, there were 19.3 million military veterans in the United States in 2014. Of those, 1.6 million were female. • California, Texas & Florida are the states with the largest number of veterans, equalling one million or more. • Veterans consist of people who served in the military. This includes the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, & Coast Guard. Veterans serve in times of war & peace. • The word “veteran” comes from the Old English language and means “old, experienced soldier.” The first use of the word was documented in 1789. • Although many veterans are working, & the average annual income of male veterans is $37,000, some veterans continue to be unemployed. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall unemployment rate for veterans rose to 7.6% in January 2013. The unemployment rate of post-9/11 veterans or those who participated in the Gulf War reached 6.2%. • Upon retiring or being discharged, veterans may need help acclimating to life outside the military. The Department of Veterans Affairs says about 30% of Vietnam War veterans have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. • Between 1971 & 1977, Veterans Day was celebrated on the fourth Monday in October. It was changed back to its original date, November 11, in 1975 when President Gerald Ford signed bill S.331 into law. The change went into effect beginning in 1978. • An American soldier was buried at the national cemetery in Arlington on November 11, 1921. His identity was unknown, & the gravesite is known as the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.” A guard from the Society of the Honor Guard stands watch over the grave each year on Veterans Day, and the president or another high-ranking member of the government places a wreath on the grave. Veterans Day occurs each year on November 11, marking the end of World War I. The day has evolved into a celebration & remembrance of the heroism of America’s brave soldiers.

Wireless Technology For Hearing Aids Hearing loss may not be something people want to contemplate, but it is more common than many people may think. Hearing deficits may occur from birth or be acquired due to injury or prolonged exposure to loud noises. The National Institute on Deafness & Other Communication Disorders says approximately 15% of American adults (37.5 million people) aged 18 & older report some trouble hearing. Age is the strongest contributor to hearing loss, with people age 60 & older with the highest levels of impairment. People with hearing deficits can access a growing number of assistance devices to make their lives easier. From telephones & doorbells that trigger a blinking light rather than a bell to closed captioning & voice-to-text conversion to a greater understanding & widespread usage of sign language, the deaf & hearing impaired have many options to help them overcome hearing loss.

As technology advances, so, too, do the options for the hearing impaired. One innovative piece of gadgetry is sophisticated wireless hearing aids that are compatible with personal electronic devices. Thanks to Bluetooth technology, hearing aid manufacturers are harnessing this science to expand on the abilities of hearing aids & to develop new products. In the past, in order to use an MP3 player or mobile phone, a person would need to remove traditional hearing aids to accommodate a pair of earbuds. Furthermore, hearing aids may have had their limitations in filtering ambient noise. Although Bluetooth-powered hearing devices are still in their infancy, Oticon, a global hearing technology company, has developed their own communication & entertainment solution called ConnectLine that enables people to connect hearing aids with different devices. This transforms hearing aids into a personal wireless headset for listening to music, watching television or video chatting. Many other companies, such as ReSound & Starkey, also offer Bluetooth-enabled devices. Their devices may be compatible with Android & iPhone models, some of which may only require an app or direct connectivity to the device. In fact, Apple has patented a specific Bluetooth connectivity with certain hearing aid manufacturers. Others may require an accessory of some sort to make connections possible, especially when pairing with a TV or other audio device.

How To Make Thanksgiving Dinner Healthier Thanksgiving is not often associated with healthy eating. From candied sweet potatoes to sausage-filled stuffing, Thanksgiving dinner is full of flavor, but also full of calories & fat. The Calorie Control Council claims the average American will consume more than 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day. Even if you won’t come close to consuming 4,500 calories this Thanksgiving, you may want to take the following steps to make your Thanksgiving feast healthier.

• Create a calorie deficit. A key to maintaining a healthy weight or losing a few pounds is to exercise more & eat less, a strategy that can be employed during the holiday season. Such a regimen will improve your metabolism, & your body will be better at handling the extra caloric load of Thanksgiving without packing on the pounds. Once Thanksgiving dinner is over, go for a walk around the neighborhood. This can facilitate digestion & burn calories. • Practice portion control. It’s not necessarily what you eat on Thanksgiving, but how much you eat that makes the meal so unhealthy. The American Heart Association advises holiday celebrants to practice portion control. In addition, eat fewer high-calorie foods & fill up on lighter fare, such as vegetables & lean turkey. This way you get to enjoy a taste of everything without overdoing it. • Cut down on bread. Bread can be both delicious & filling. But bread is often full of empty calories, particularly if you’re eating refined, white breads. Opt for less bread in stuffing recipes & incorporate more celery, raisins, cranberries, & apples to give bulk to the stuffing. Choose whole-grain rolls & crackers to complement dinner. • Choose healthier ingredients. Substitute low-fat milk or stocks for cream & whole milk in recipes. Include steamed cauliflower in mashed potatoes recipes to make them more filling & healthier. Sweet potatoes tend to be sweet enough without the need for butter, sugar & marshmallows. Skim the fat & oils out of gravies & sauces before serving. Olive oil is a healthy fat that can be used in place of butter or margarine. • Focus on fruit for dessert. Thanksgiving dinner is usually followed with a decadent spread of desserts. These pies & cakes can be delicious but laden with calories. In lieu of traditional fare, serve poached fruits sprinkled with a little brown sugar & oatmeal for a tasty & healthy dessert. Low-fat sherbet, fresh fruit salad & rice pudding also make for healthier desserts. • Choose healthy beverages. It’s easy to overlook the calorie content of beverages. Whenever possible, choose water or a low-calorie drink. Children can sip on diluted apple juice. Be mindful of how many alcoholic beverages you consume. Spirits can be 100 calories per serving & are high in sugar. Thanksgiving dinner tends to be high in calories. But there are ways to cut calories from your holiday meal without sacrificing flavor.

The Relationship Between Health & Volunteering Volunteering is often its own reward. Helping others can be just as beneficial to the people doing the helping as it is for the people being helped. Though it can sometimes be hard to find time to volunteer, a close look at some of the various health benefits of volunteering may compel you to find the time they need to volunteer. Volunteering & happiness - Veteran volunteers may have long suspected they’re happier when they volunteer, & research suggests that’s true. A study from researchers at the London School of Economics that was published in the journal Social Science & Medicine found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were. The researchers compared people who never volunteered to people who did, finding that the odds of being “very happy” rose by 7% among people who volunteered monthly. Those odds increased by 12% among people who volunteered every two to four weeks.

Volunteering & mental health - Psychologists have long known that social interaction can improve mental health. Psychology Today notes that interacting with others decreases feelings of depression while increasing feelings of well-being. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, exposing volunteers to people with shared interests. That can be especially valuable to people who are new to a community, helping them to avoid feelings of loneliness after moving to an area where they have no preexisting social network. Volunteering & long-term health - Volunteering that requires social interaction can produce long-term health benefits that can have a profound impact on quality of life as men & women age. A recent study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease focused on participants without dementia who were involved in a highly interactive discussion group. Researchers compared those participants to others who participated in Tai Chi or walking or were part of a control group that did not receive any interventions. The former group exhibited improved cognitive function, & MRIs indicated they increased their brain volumes after being involved in the discussion group. Larger brain volume has been linked to a lower risk of dementia. Many volunteering opportunities require routine interaction with others, potentially providing significant, long-term health benefits. While volunteering is a selfless act, volunteers may be benefitting in ways that can improve their lives in both the short- and long-term.

Symptoms & Risk Factors For COPD

SHARE THE

A group of progressive lung diseases that make it hard to breathe, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, was the fourth most common cause of death in the U.S. in 2016. Only cancer, heart disease & unintentional injuries claimed more American lives in 2016 than COPD, which includes conditions such as chronic bronchitis & emphysema. So how does COPD affect so many people & claim so many lives? Understanding its risk factors & symptoms is a good place to start answering that question & more about this deadly yet preventable disease. Risk factors - Prolonged exposure to irritants that damage the lungs & airways can cause COPD. Limiting exposure to these risk factors can reduce the chances that you develop COPD. • Smoking: The American Lung Assoc. notes that roughly 85 to 90% of all COPD cases are caused by cigarette smoking. When cigarette smoke, which contains thousands of harmful chemicals, is inhaled, the toxins within the smoke weaken the lungs’ defenses against infections, narrow the air passages & cause swelling in air tubes. Each of these things contributes to COPD. • Workplace pollutants/poor air quality: Long-term exposure to & contact with harmful workplace pollutants is another risk factor for COPD, as is working in an environment with poor air quality. Exposure to certain chemicals & fumes can increase workers’ risk of developing COPD. The resource COPD.net indicates that 20% of COPD cases in the U.S. are caused by poor air quality in the workplace. Dust & fumes can adversely affect workplace air quality & may elevate workers’ risk for COPD. • Genetics: Though such instances are rare, the American Lung Assoc. notes that a small number of people have a rare form of COPD caused by a genetic condition that affects the body’s ability to produce Alpha-1, a protein that protects the lungs. This is called Alpha-1 deficiency-related emphysema, and the Mayo Clinic notes that it’s responsible for about 1% of COPD cases. Symptoms - Shortness of breath & tiring easily are two early symptoms of COPD. Because these symptoms do not have too great an impact on daily life, they’re often ignored. People tend to take more notice as COPD progresses to a cough that can produce mucus, phlegm or even spots of blood. Fatigue & tightness in the chest also may indicate COPD. Many people with COPD also experience wheezing & gasping for air when climbing a flight of stairs. As COPD progresses, people may develop swelling in their legs & feet. COPD also may cause low oxygen levels in the bloodstream that can cause discoloration in the lips & fingernails. Current or former smokers need to be especially mindful of COPD symptoms, reporting even seemingly minor problems to their physicians immediately. More information about COPD is available at www.lung.org.
