Mother’s Day Ideas From All Walks Of Life Mother’s Day is a celebration of women who devote so much of their effort & energy to their families. Celebrating Mom on Mother’s Day lets her know all of her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Mothers may perform similar tasks, but no two moms are the same. Finding ways to celebrate Mom’s uniqueness can make the day that much more meaningful & memorable. The Crafter - Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon & produce mementos that she will cherish for years to come. Dads & kids can plan the project in advance without her knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time & setting up the crafting station the night before or while she is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft & giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. The Reader - A 2017 survey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that women read more than men. Women read an average of 19.8 minutes per day, which can make a Mother’s Day focused on Mom’s love of books an ideal & unique way to spend the day. Kids can write Mom or Grandma their own books, & Dad can help put them together. Dads can visit rare bookstores & look for original copies of Mom’s favorite books that she might not find elsewhere. The Nature Lover - Fishing & other outdoor activities might have a reputation as predominantly male hobbies, but studies show that’s not really the case. A 2016 report from the Outdoor Foundation found that 46% of people who participated in outdoor activities were women. If Mom or Grandma is a nature enthusiast, families can plan a Mother’s Day enjoying the great outdoors, even giving her a new fishing pole, hiking gear or other items that align with her favorite nature activity. The Relaxation Specialist - Of course, some mothers & grandmothers may want to simply unwind with a relaxing morning at the spa on Mother’s Day. In fact, the 2018 U.S. Spa Industry Study found that the spa industry has enjoyed seven consecutive years of consistent growth, with more than 187 billion spa visits in 2017 alone. A relaxing morning at the spa can be the perfect way for her to begin Mother’s Day before she enjoys a brunch out with her family. Mother’s Day celebrations can be as unique as the women being celebrated. Celebrate with Mom & Grandma on Sunday, May 12th.

Health Screenings Every Woman Should Get Routine wellness exams are essential for women who want to maintain and/or improve their health. Women may not be familiar with all of the screening options that can keep them on the right track. Preventative health screenings can shed light on risks for certain diseases & provide insight into patient behaviors that may be harmful. Screenings also may help save a life. Healthy diets & daily exercise are hallmarks of healthy people, but routine wellness exams are just as important. The following are some screenings women should include in their health and wellness routines. • Blood pressure: Doctors will typically test blood pressure at every visit. Adults 40 or older, or those with conditions that put them at risk for hypertension, should go annually or as advised by a doctor. • Cervical cytology: The American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists recommends routine pelvic examinations with cervical testing that includes Pap testing & HPV testing. Consult with an OB-GYN for testing frequency, which depends on age. • Cholesterol: Cholesterol levels alone are not indicative of one’s overall health. However, a complete cholesterol test can determine a person’s risk for heart disease. If levels are consistently normal, this test may only need to be performed every five years, advises the National Institutes of Health. • Mammogram: Mammograms screen for breast cancer. Given the risk of false positives, debate continues as to how frequently women need these screenings. The most recent guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says mammograms are recommended starting at age 50, & should occur every two years. The American Cancer Society advises starting at age 45 & having a mammogram annually through age 55. • Blood-glucose test: The National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive Kidney Diseases says women should be screened regularly for prediabetes or diabetes beginning around age 45. Women can speak with their physicians to determine how often they should receive these screenings. • Osteoporosis screenings: Bone density can be measured starting at age 65 or earlier if a woman has a high fracture risk, states Regis College. • Skin examination: The American Academy of Dermatology suggests speaking with a dermatologist about skin exams. Self-examinations should be routine, but dermatologists may recommend more formal tests to women who meet certain criteria. Women should speak to their doctors about personalized screenings based on family history & other risk factors.

How Memorial Day & Veterans Day Differ Memorial Day & Veterans Day each honor the military, though the two holidays are not the same. Memorial Day, which is celebrated annually on the last Monday in May, honors the brave men & women who lost their lives while serving in the American military. Many communities host memorial ceremonies honoring their fallen soldiers on Memorial Day, ensuring such soldiers’ bravery & sacrifices are never forgotten. While many people now view Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial start of summer, the weekend should not be celebrated without also pausing to reflect on & recognize the military personnel who lost their lives in defense of freedom & the American way of life. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 & recognizes all men & women who have served in the military. Veterans Day coincides with Remembrance Day, which is celebrated by the Commonwealth of Nations, an association of 53 member states with connections to the British Empire. Though Veterans Day & Remembrance Day are each celebrated on November 11, the latter recognizes armed forces members who died in the line of duty, making it more similar to Memorial Day than Veterans Day. It’s common for people to recognize fallen soldiers on Veterans Day, but many also express their appreciation to existing veterans.

MEMORIAL DAY Monday, May 27th Belvidere’s Memorial Day Parade organized by VFW Post 1461 and American Legion Post 77 will be Monday, May 27th. Lines up at 9 AM and steps off at 9:30 AM. The Parade begins at Lot #5 between Whitney & Main by the City Clerk’s Office, then down Whitney to Meadow, onto State Street, ending at the bridge with a ceremony. In case of inclement weather the ceremony will be held at 10 AM at the VFW Post 1461, 1310 W. Lincoln Avenue, Belvidere.

Combat Veterans & The Threat Posed By PTSD Every day men & women in the military put themselves in harm’s way to protect the lives & freedoms of their fellow countrymen. These brave men & women pay a steep price for their service, spending time away from their loved ones & putting themselves at risk of long-term physical & mental injuries. Many men & women, even those who never served in the military, are aware of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event. Combat veterans are vulnerable to PTSD, & the percentage of veterans who deal with it each day is alarming. According to the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs, as many as 20% of veterans who served during Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom have PTSD. In addition, the USDVA notes that estimates now suggest as many as 30% of Vietnam veterans have had PTSD in their lifetime. Though it’s not exclusive to men & women who have served in the military, PTSD has long been linked to combat veterans. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association notes that PTSD has been referred to as “shell shock” & “combat fatigue” in the past. While the APA notes that a diagnosis of PTSD requires exposure to an upsetting traumatic event, that exposure can be indirect rather than firsthand. Because some people may assume that only firsthand exposure to trauma can lead to PTSD, many may be suffering in silence. That makes it all the more important that people learn to recognize the symptoms of PTSD. According to the APA, symptoms of PTSD, which can vary in severity, fall into four categories. 1. Intrusive thoughts: Flashbacks, distressing dreams & repeated, involuntary memories are examples of intrusive thoughts symptomatic of PTSD. The APA notes that some people with PTSD experience flashbacks so vivid that they feel they are reliving the traumatic experience or that it is unfolding before their eyes. 2. Avoiding reminders: Some people with PTSD may avoid people, places, activities, objects, or situations they feel will trigger distressing memories. Soldiers, for example, may avoid interacting with fellow combat veterans. Avoiding discussions about a traumatic event & how they feel about it is another symptom of PTSD. 3. Negative thoughts & feelings: The APA says that negative thoughts & feelings may include ongoing & distorted beliefs about oneself or others; ongoing fear, horror, anger, guilt, or shame; considerably diminished interest in activities previously enjoyed; & a sense of estrangement & detachment from others. 4. Arousal & reactive symptoms: These symptoms may include irritability & angry outbursts; reckless or selfdestructive behavior; being easily startled; or have difficulty concentrating or sleeping. PTSD poses a significant threat to the men & women who serve in the military. Additional resources about PTSD is available at www.ptsd.va.gov & www.psychiatry.org.

Crafts For The Not-So-Crafty Hobbyist Creativity lends a lot to everyday life. Parties are made that much better by intricate dessert designs. Handmade blankets tend to be more inspiring & cherished than mass-produced alternatives. Because of that, many people find hobbies that inspire their creativity to be incredibly rewarding. While crafting is a hobby that can be enjoyed by people of all ages & skillsets, some people are more craft-inclined than others. That doesn’t mean those with little arts & crafts experience cannot make items they can be proud of. Dress-up premade items - Sandra Lee made a career of teaching people how to blend some prepackaged food items with other ingredients to create semi-homemade menus. Anyone can use the same mentality to put together craft projects without having to start from scratch. Search the hobby stores or department stores for items that can be paired together. For example, why not glue a 4x6” picture frame to the top of a candlestick holder for an ornate & interesting design element at home? Mason jars can be embellished with just about anything - from ribbon to fabric to glitter - giving them a decorative touch. Grow comfortable with a computer printer - Homespun graphic arts can be mastered by just about anyone with access to some clip art, fonts & basic design software. You may also be able to find free apps or shareware online providing ready-made templates. Print out cute labels or tags that match party themes & put them on favor bags or prizes. Print cute slogans on cardstock & staple them to a small gift bag. Make a collage of different images & print them out to frame. Make soaps or candles - Thanks to the bevy of kits available at craft stores, it’s easier than ever to make your own soaps or candles at home. All it usually takes is melting down the medium, adding the desired scents & colors & then allowing them to set in a mold or container. The result may seem like you worked for hours when really it was a relatively easy task. These handmade products make great hostess gifts. Personalize clothing - Create t-shirts, aprons or other items that have that personalized touch. If you do not want to hassle with the mess of fabric paints or pens, use iron-on stencils or letters. Another idea is to create your own stencil (fire up that printer again), cut out your design or letters & then use a bleach pen sold in the laundry or cleaning aisle to color in the design. Let it sit & then launder for a faded & fun project. Crafting doesn’t have to be difficult. Projects exist for people of varying skill levels.

NASCAR And Its Fan History Millions of racing enthusiasts tune in to watch their favorite NASCAR drivers every weekend. Fans are drawn to the action & the sport’s storied history. It is believed that what would ultimately evolve into car racing began during Prohibition times when “runners,” or those who delivered moonshine, souped up their cars to evade federal tax agents. These runners took pride in evading the law & would hold informal races to determine who had the fastest car. Eventually the need for smuggling booze waned, & car racing became a respectable sport. On February 21, 1948, the National Assoc. for Stock Car Racing was officially incorporated, although the first official NASCAR race took place six days earlier. The sport would go on to be one of the most popular spectator activities in North America & is now a multibillion dollar industry. NASCAR owes its beginnings to mechanic & auto-repair shop owner William “Bill” France, Sr. of Washington, D.C.. France became interested in racing after relocating to Daytona Beach, Fla., which he discovered was a hotbed for racing enthusiasts. France involved himself in racing cars & promotion. France felt there should be a sanctioning body to govern the sport, so in 1947, he organized a meeting in Florida to discuss the future of stock car racing & conceived the notion of NASCAR with other members of the racing community. As NASCAR amassed its legions of fans, it also helped solidify the star status of many drivers. Richard Petty, David Pearson, Dale Earnhardt Sr. (and later Junior), are just a few of the drivers who have torn up tracks. NASCAR has built its reputation not only on quality races, but also through sponsorship. In the history of NASCAR, there have been only three naming rights partners: RJ Reynolds, Sprint/Nextel & Monster Energy, which took the reins in 2017. Those unfamiliar with NASCAR may think that the NASCAR season never ends. However, there is a defined season - comprised of 38 races, February-November. Races are conducted on privately owned race tracks, all of which are asphalt or concrete. NASCAR has been around for decades & new stars & fans are made each year.
