Get A Head-Start On Tax Season The dawn of a new calendar year often marks the end of the sometimes hectic holiday season. The beginning of January serves as a great time to start preparing for tax season. While the deadline to file returns may be several months away, getting a head-start allows men & women the chance to organize their tax documents so they aren’t racing against a deadline come April. The following are a handful of ways to start preparing for your returns now. • Find last year’s return. You will need information from last year’s return in order to file this year, so find last year’s return & print it out if you plan to hire a professional to work on your return. • Gather your year-end financial statements. If you spent the last year investing, then you will have to pay taxes on any interest earned. Interest earned on the majority of savings accounts is also taxable, so gather all of your year-end financial statements from your assorted accounts in one place. Doing so will make filing your return, whether you do it yourself or work with a professional, go more quickly. • Speak with your mortgage lender. Homeowners should receive forms documenting their mortgage interest payments for the last year, as the money paid in interest on your home or homes is tax deductible. If these forms are not received in a timely manner, speak with your lender. You might even be able to download them from your lender’s secure website. • Make a list of your charitable contributions. Charitable contributions, no matter how small, are tax deductible. While it’s easiest to maintain a list of all charitable donations you make as the year goes on, if you have not done that, then you can make one now. Look for receipts of all contributions, contacting any charities you donated to if you misplaced any receipts. • Book an appointment with your tax preparation specialist now. As April 15 draws closer, tax preparers’ schedules get busier and busier. The earlier you book your appointment, the more likely you are to get a favorable time for that meeting. In addition, if you have gathered all of the information you need by early February, then booking your appointment early means you can file earlier & receive any return you might be eligible for that much quicker. The Keen Age Center offers tax preparation help late January - April. Preregistration is required by calling 815-544-9893. The Keen Age Center is located at 2141 Henry Luckow Lane, Belvidere. Tax season might not be right around the corner, but it’s never too early to start preparing your return.

What To Expect When Donating Blood Donating blood is a selfless act. Perhaps because donating blood is often a simple, relatively quick process, donors may be inclined to downplay just how big a deal it is to donate blood. But blood donors save lives every day.

Affordable Assisted Living Community For Seniors 65 & Older Of All Incomes. Call For A Tour Today!

According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. To understand just how vital blood donors are, consider that, according to the Red Cross, a single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. ONSITE: • Beauty Parlor • Country Store • Physician Visits • Mail Service • Nursing Staff

Many people give blood in response to tragedies like natural disasters, but prospective donors don’t need a special reason to donate. In fact, people who regularly donate blood help to ensure that supply meets demand. Donating blood for the first time can be a unique experience. The Red Cross offers the following information about what first-time donors can expect when they arrive at donation centers. Registration - Donors will have to register before they can donate blood. Upon arriving at a donation center, donors will have to sign in & show some form of identification, such as a valid driver’s license. Donors also will be given some information to read before they can continue the process. Medical history - Donors will be asked some questions about their medical history. These questions may be answered online or in a private conversation. In addition, donors will submit to a general health check to ensure they’re fit to give blood.

• Private Senior Apartments • Restaurant Style Dining • Housekeeping & Laundry • 24 Hr. Personal Care Assist. • In-House Emergency Response System • Medication Reminders & Assistance • Daily Activities & Transportation

The donation process - The Red Cross notes that donations typically take between eight & 10 minutes. Donors will sit comfortably as a pint of blood is withdrawn.

4730 Squaw Prairie Rd. Belvidere

The recovery process also is brief. After blood has been withdrawn, donors will be offered a snack & a drink. This recovery time typically lasts between 10 & 15 minutes. After that time is up, donors can resume their days.

www.hw-belvidere-slf.com

Testing - The work continues after donors leave the donation center. Donated blood will be tested & sent to a patient in need, potentially saving a life. And all it took was about an hour of a donor’s time. Blood donors quietly save lives every day. Learn more about blood donations & how to donate at www.redcrossblood.org. The Rock River Valley Blood Center has a donor center location in Belvidere at 1740 South State Street. The center is open Mondays & Tuesday 9 AM - 5 PM, Wednesdays & Thursdays 11 AM - 6 PM, Fridays 8 AM - 1 PM, and the second Saturday of each month 7 AM - 11 AM. For more information about donating call 815-965-8751 or 877-RRVBC-99.

Volunteer - Give Back To Your Community The Belvidere Park District is looking for volunteers. Please consider volunteering your time. Volunteering offers many benefits in appreciation for your gift of time & expertise. Volunteering can help you: Learn or develop new skills, gain experience, improve your health, feel needed & valued, build self-esteem & self-confidence, meet new people, make a difference in someone’s life. How To Care For Wild Birds This Winter

Winter forces everyone to confront the changes synonymous with the season, & local wildlife is no exception Birds keep warm by building up fat as an insulator & energy source. The Audubon Society says more than 10% of some birds’ winter body weight may be fat. That can be challenging to maintain when common sources of food such as insects & berries, disappear as winter wears on. This is when some human intervention can prove handy A few simple efforts may benefit birds & other wildlife that may not hibernate. • Have a supply of food, bird feeders, houses, & other bird-related gear at the ready before the storms rev up. • Invest in nutritious food, such as black oil sunflower seeds or blends that are high in black oil sunflower seeds You also can make available more foods that are high in fat, such as suet, peanut butter or even whole peanuts. • Choose feeders that will keep seed dry; otherwise, it will be prone to bacterial and fungal growth. • Don’t discard fallen leaves or any downed twigs or pruned boughs from trees. This will give birds material for creating shelter or hiding away when the weather gets especially brutal. • Put shallow water sources around so birds can drink. Replace them frequently if water freezes.

Water supports the body and therefore puts less stress on muscles and joints. The resistance of the water when performing exercises activates your muscles & will help build strength. There is less strain on your heart because water pressure helps move the blood around your body. You have a greater range of motion due to there being less impact on the body by being in the water. By working out in the water, you also have less chance of your body overheating. Increased flexibility as joints increase their range of motion. Studies show that water based exercises are crucial in improving flexibility and mobility in individuals suffering from either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Aquatic aerobic exercises help improve the flexibility and mobility of all individuals including those who suffer from obesity, RA, osteoarthritis and as we age. As your heart continues beating and pumping away with less strain and pressure over time, you effectively lower your risk of heart disease. Water exercises have been shown to help lower high blood pressure. Many people don’t think you will burn calories, but surprise, you can expect to burn anywhere between 400 to 500 calories per hour according to the Aquatic Exercise Association. It’s so much fun most people even forget it’s actually a workout.

Some classes use fun equipment such as aqua dumbbells, kick boards, water jog belts and/or swim noodles. Most places will provide whatever they use in classes. The Belvidere Family YMCA is a full service wellness facility featuring cardio and strength equipment, an 84 degree pool and many water exercise classes for anyone 12 and up including a specialized class geared to those with arthritis, dry sauna, gymnasium and fitness classes. The Y offers many types of memberships including open door scholarships, Silver Sneakers & Veteran discounts. For more information call 815-547-5307.

WELCOME TO 2020! It’s a new year, a new decade and it could be a new living arrangement for you! If you’re starting to think of downsizing, easing up on life or just ready for a change, there are things to consider when moving. There are different priorities for different people. 1. Do you have to sell your current home first? Now is a good time to start “thinning out” and decluttering. Let’s face it, who wants to move things that haven’t been used in years? You can enlist the help of family or friends to make it easier, or there are companies that can do it for a fee. It’s never too early to start boxing things up. 2. What type of housing are you considering? If you’re tired of mowing, shoveling and worrying about landscaping, maybe a condominium would be perfect for you. It allows you to own your home, yet live near neighbors with a similar life style. It’s perfect if you’re gone part of the year as a “snowbird”. No worries, just lock the door, turn off the mail and enjoy winter where it’s warmer! A ranch style home is perfect if stairs are an issue. Also look for a finished basement with an extra bedroom and bath for family to stay when visiting or live-in care down the road. Not ready for a condo? There are new homes coming on the market every day, so consider a smaller ranch or a multilevel home preferably with a first floor bedroom. 3. Consult a local, knowledgeable Realtor that has your best interest at heart. He or she can suggest the best way to get your home ready to sell with staging, pricing and negotiating the best price for you. They can also show you homes that would fit your criteria even before you’re ready so that you know that there will something you’ll like when you are ready. And remember, it’s always a good idea to ask them for testimonials from past clients. A new home can be stressful but also so exciting! It’s a fresh start and new beginning to the rest of your life! Make sure to surround yourself with helpful, positive people and you will be settled in to your new lifestyle in no time!

Guide To Popular Herbal Teas Consumption of herbal tea predates consumption of Chinese black tea. Since they do not contain leaves of the camellia sinensis (tea) plant, herbal teas really aren’t tea, but have been given the tea moniker because they are often steeped in a manner similar to tea. Herbal teas are made from herbs as well as dried fruits, flowers & spices. Certain herbal teas have health-promoting properties. Herbal tea can be used to boost the immune system, to relax & unwind, to alleviate pain, or just to warm you up on a chilly day. Even though herbal teas may seem all-natural, it is wise to check with a doctor before including them as part of a health-boosting regimen to confirm that they won’t produce any adverse reactions with medications. Following are some of the more popular herbal teas & their potential health benefits. Chamomile is best known for its calming effects, & it is sometimes used as a mild sleep-inducer. Patients with insomnia found marginal improvements in waking up during the night, time to fall asleep & daytime functioning after taking chamomile extract twice a day. Those who enjoy peppermint tea often do so to soothe an upset stomach. Nutritionist Dr. Simran Saini from Fortis Hospital, India says that peppermint tea also can promote weight loss, reduce heartburn & may help people relax. Turmeric tea has anti-inflammatory properties that may be beneficial for anyone who has an autoimmune disease like arthritis & fibromyalgia. These properties can also help with symptoms of migraines & minor aches & pains. Drinking hot ginger tea increases feelings of fullness & reduces hunger. Ginger also may improve blood sugar control for people with type 2 diabetes. Herbal teas can be part of a health plan that involves all-natural remedies.
