Belvidere, which means “beautiful to view,” is located on the Kishwaukee River, considered to be one of the most pristine rivers in Illinois. Murals depicting Belvidere’s rich history have turned our downtown into a work of art and are a sight to behold on many of our buildings.

Township government is the oldest form of government in North America, beginning in 1636 and in Illinois in 1848. Belvidere Township began in 1850 There are nine townships in Boone County and these elected officials represent what is most commonly referred to as the government closest to the people. General Assistance, Property Assessment, and Road & Bridge Maintenance are the three basic services provided by our Township. Other services provide a link to the community that includes, but is not limited to, senior citizens programs, youth programs, assistance to the disabled, and cemetery maintenance. Townships serve their citizens from the cradle to the grave.

THE BELVIDERE IOU CLUB was established in 1924 by twenty downtown businessmen to engage in charitable activities involving Belvidere/ Boone County children. The club has grown to a 50 local businessperson organization that annually hosts the Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Parade, First Grade Christmas Program and IOU Club Shopping Tour. The IOU Club contributes to many local youth-focused organizations such as the Belvidere Family YMCA, Belvidere Park District summer camp program, Boone County Conservation District summer camp, Belvidere Youth Baseball, School District 100/Rock Valley College Running Start Program and many other worthwhile youth activities. THE BELVIDERE ROTARY CLUB, established in 1920, is one of the oldest and most prominent fraternal and social organizations in Boone County. Rotarian service focuses on strengthening fellowship, vocational service, community service and international service encompassing actions to expand Rotary’s humanitarian outreach. BOONE COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL, (P.O. Box 311, Belvidere) formed in 1987, is a local arts organization established to encourage and facilitate the use of public and private resources for the development and support of the Arts. The Council presents art enrichment programs for schools, performances by artists, summer concerts in Belvidere Park, a county wide student art show and mural promotion & enhancement. BOONE COUNTY CONSERVATION DISTRICT, 603 N. Appleton Road, Belvidere, IL, operates with a mission of preserving natural areas, promoting environmental education and facilitating passive recreation. Since its creation in 1964, the district has preserved more than 3,000 acres of parks, trails, and preserves. Features include 900 acres in the Kishwaukee River Valley, 800 acres in picnic areas and parks, over 30 miles of hiking, biking trails, including 15 miles of the Long Prairie Trail which stretches across northern Boone County. The Nature Center/Visitor’s Center, open year round, is utilized by schools and the public. It includes a summer day camp, public programs, and distribution of a newsletter.

On site there is a historic trail which includes two historic log cabins and 5 heirloom gardens as well as an herb garden, a butterfly garden & a rain garden, which peak with the annual Autumn Pioneer Festival held the fourth weekend of September. BOONE COUNTY FAIR: Country Star Josh Turner will be headlining the 2015 Boone County Fair, 8791 Rt. 76, which runs from Tuesday, August 11th trough Sunday, August 16th. Josh Turner performs Saturday, August 15th at 8:00 PM. Hear his latest hit single ‘Lay Low’ plus other hits such as ‘Long Black Train’ and Time is Love’. The Boone County Council on Aging is a multipurpose agency dedicated to all older adults, their families and their caregivers by reaching out with programs to help enrich and improve their quality of life. Services include: Computer lab, educational programs, information and assistance, in-home care, medical car escort, nutrition programs, outreach, public transportation, recreational and social programs and volunteer opportunities. Support groups include Diabetes Self Management, Low Vision, Parkinson’s, Caregivers, Grief and Veteran’s Club. A limited variety of medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, bath chairs, and other assistance devices are available through the Lending Closet. Educational programs such as To Your Health, Memory Café, My Decisions, Powerful Tools for Caregivers, Chef on the Run, Smart Drivers are offered throughout the year. People of all ages are invited to this facility.

Services of the Boone County Council on Aging are made available, in part, with funds provided under Title III-B and Title III-E of the Older Americans Act, GAP Filling Funds, and the Illinois General Revenue Funds through Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging. Funding for transportation is received through a Section 5311 grant with Boone County from the Illinois Department of Transportation and Downstate Operation Assistance Program funds through Rockford Mass Transit District. Funds for transportation are also provided by the State of Illinois Donated Funds Initiative from Title XX of the Social Security Act administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services and the Illinois Department on Aging.

Reimbursement is received from the Illinois Department on Aging for services provided under the Community Care Program. Funding is additionally provided by Boone County, the City of Belvidere, Belvidere Township, Poplar Grove Township, Bonus Township, Flora Township, Boone Township, Spring Township, Caledonia Township, Manchester Township, and the United Way of Boone County. A significant portion of the BCCA budget is derived from contributions from individuals, groups, clients, users and fundraising projects. See our advertisement on page 37.

BOONE COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM Hours: Tuesday-Friday 95, Saturday 9-3. The museum is located at 314 S. State St., in historic downtown Belvidere. COSMOPOLITAN CLUB OF BELVIDERE: The mission of Cosmopolitan Club of Belvidere is to contribute to community well-being through charitable donations and volunteer service with special emphasis on supporting efforts to prevent and find a cure for diabetes. Cosmo donates to many worthy causes in the community through funds raised at their annual golf outing and their corn booth at the Boone County Fair. The club meets on Wednesdays at the Moose Club. Dean Foods is a diversified food processor and distributor, producing a full line of dairy and other food products, including fluid milk, cottage cheese, ice cream and frozen novelties, frozen yogurt, and specialty foods such as dips. Products are sold to supermarkets, specialty foods stores, food service facilities, other food processors, and internationally.

GENERAL MILLS, 915 E. Pleasant Street, Belvidere, is a major yearround packaging facility for frozen vegetables, food service cereals and Nature Valley granola bars. This facility has been operating in this community since 1903, over 110 years. Public tours are not available at this time. Established in 1967. Now the fifth largest campground in Illinois. 460 improved sites with water and electricity (200 sites occupied with seasonals); primitive areas will accommodate 90 plus tents. One and one-half miles of river frontage on the Kishwaukee River.

IDA PUBLIC LIBRARY, 320 N. State, Belvidere (N. State at W. Madison), was established in 1883 when General Allen Fuller donated $5,000 to the city to establish a library in memory of his daughter, Ida. Our 15,000 sq. ft. facility houses more than 90,000 items including books, CD’s, audiobooks & movies. We also subscribe to more than 300 magazines & newspapers. We are also adding a number of downloadable e-books & audiobooks to our collection. We have a wonderful local history & genealogy room that provides information on the history of Belvidere & Boone County. Storytimes held weekly. Computer & internet access available as well as free wireless internet. We offer public fax service & photocopy machines. City residents pay taxes which support the library. Non-residents may purchase a library card to obtain the same library services. The cost of a non-resident library card is .22% (.0022) of the taxable value of the homeowner’s residence or 22% (.22) of a month’s rent for renters. Library staff can look this information up on the assessor’s website. We belong to an 8 member consortium that shares a catalog & circulation system.

PARADISE CAMPING RESORT, 11122 Station Street, in beautiful downtown Garden Prairie (6 miles east of Belvidere, one block north of Rt. 20.).

The family campground is on the Kishwaukee River. If your leisure interests run towards fishing, swimming or tubing, along with a quiet peaceful setting, you will love it here. We have seasonal, monthly or nightly camping. Nightly camping includes water and electric. Open mid April to end of October. Some sites are available all year. Serves residents within the city limits of Belvidere as well as the approximately 9,000 residents that reside outside the city limits.

Belvidere Township has 79 miles of road, 73 subdivisions with approximately 120 cul-de-sacs and 4 subdivision pending outside the city limits of Belvidere.

Belvidere Township is involved in many programs throughout the year. We sponsor a Shred Day Program to destroy unwanted documents each Spring. We provide a drug collection site for unused and outdated medicines in the summer. In 2012 local voters authorized Belvidere Township to negotiate electric rates for residents and small businesses in the township.

For your safety Belvidere Township has five tornado sirens. The sirens will use the following tones to indicate weather warnings. These are used in Boone County. Neighboring communities may have other signals. Regular testing is the first Tuesday of each month.

Steady Tone: When the tornado siren goes off with a steady tone, and sounds for three (3) minutes (that is a long time), it means the Weather Bureau has issued a tornado warning. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been sighted in the area. Go to the basement or nearest tornado shelter.

Tornado Watches: There is no siren signal for a tornado watch. If you get this message over the television or other media, it means the Weather Bureau has issued a tornado watch. Conditions are right for the formation of a tornado, but none has been sighted. Be alert for the warning siren.
