Township government is the oldest form of government in North America, beginning in 1636 and in Illinois in 1848. Belvidere Township began in 1850 There are nine townships in Boone County and these elected officials represent what is most commonly referred to as the government closest to the people. General Assistance, Property Assessment, and Road & Bridge Maintenance are the three basic services provided by our Township. Other services provide a link to the community that includes, but is not limited to, senior citizens programs, youth programs, assistance to the disabled, and cemetery maintenance. BELVIDERE TOWNSHIP.... Serves residents within the city limits of Belvidere as well as the approximately 9,000 residents that reside outside the city limits. Belvidere Township has 79 miles of road, 73 subdivisions with approximately 120 cul-de-sacs and 4 subdivision pending outside the city limits of Belvidere. Belvidere Township is involved in many programs throughout the year. We sponsor a Shred Day Program to destroy unwanted documents each Spring. We provide a drug collection site for unused and outdated medicines in the summer. In 2012 local voters authorized Belvidere Township to negotiate electric rates for residents and small businesses in the township. For your safety Belvidere Township has five tornado sirens. The sirens will use the following tones to indicate weather warnings. These are used in Boone County. Neighboring communities may have other signals. Regular testing is the first Tuesday of each month. Steady Tone: When the tornado siren goes off with a steady tone, and sounds for three (3) minutes (that is a long time), it means the Weather Bureau has issued a tornado warning. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been sighted in the area. Go to the basement or nearest tornado shelter. Tornado Watches: There is no siren signal for a tornado watch. If you get this message over the television or other media, it means the Weather Bureau has issued a tornado watch. Conditions are right for the formation of a tornado, but none has been sighted. Be alert for the warning siren.

THE BELVIDERE IOU CLUB was established in 1924 by twenty downtown businessmen to engage in charitable activities involving Belvidere/ Boone County children. The club has grown to a 50 local businessperson organization that annually hosts the Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Parade, First Grade Christmas Program and IOU Club Shopping Tour. The Boone County Council on Aging is a multipurpose agency dedicated to all older adults, their families and their caregivers by reaching out with programs to help enrich and improve their quality of life. Services include: Computer lab, educational programs, information and assistance, in-home care, medical car escort, nutrition programs, outreach, public transportation, recreational and social programs and volunteer opportunities. Support groups include Diabetes Self Management, Low Vision, Parkinson’s, Caregivers, Grief and Veteran’s Club. A limited variety of durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, bath chairs, and other assistance devices are available through the Lending Closet. Educational programs such as To Your Health, Memory Café, My Decisions, Powerful Tools for Caregivers, Chef on the Run, Smart Drivers are offered throughout the year. People of all ages are invited to this facility. Services of the Boone County Council on Aging are made available, in part, with funds provided under Title III-B and Title III-E of the Older Americans Act, GAP Filling Funds, and the Illinois General Revenue Funds through Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging. Funding for transportation is received through a Section 5311 grant with Boone County from the Illinois Department of Transportation and Downstate Operation Assistance Program funds through Rockford Mass Transit District. Funds for transportation are also provided by the State of Illinois Donated Funds Initiative from Title XX of the Social Security Act administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services and the Illinois Department on Aging. Reimbursement is received from the Illinois Department on Aging for services provided under the Community Care Program. Funding is additionally provided by Boone County, the City of Belvidere, Belvidere Township, Poplar Grove Township, Bonus Township, Flora Township, Boone Township, Spring Township, Caledonia Township, Manchester Township, and the United Way of Boone County. A significant portion of the BCCA budget is derived from contributions from individuals, groups, clients, users and fundraising projects. View our ad on page 27. THE 2019 BOONE COUNTY FAIR: The Granges of Boone County have once again put together another great six day agricultural exhibition for you and your family and friends to enjoy. We’ve packed the grounds with over 5,000 head of livestock with everything from rabbits to alpacas to sheep to draft horses. There’s 4,000 non-livestock exhibits such as quilts, flowers, photographs, posters, vegetables and much more. Browse through the 400 vendors and merchants selling and promoting all types of goods, services and tasty food items. Take a break at the Entertainment Pavilion where you’ll find free local entertainment of all types starting at Noon every day. THE BOONE COUNTY GARDENERS OF AMERICA have been beautifying Belvidere and Boone County since 1955. We are a group of men and women who share a passion for gardening. Our service projects include planting and/or maintaining the Boone County Fairgrounds, the butterfly garden at the Boone County Conservation District, plantings at Culvers Restaurant, and the flower urns on Main Street in Belvidere. In addition, we give scholarships each year to a Belvidere and North Boone School District senior. Club meetings include a program on gardening and are held on the 4th Tuesday in February through October at 2:30 PM at the Boone County Conservation District Education Center, 603 Appleton Road, Belvidere. Fundraisers for our scholarships include a plant sale in early May and a 6:00 PM public plant auction at the Boone County Fairgrounds on the 4th Tuesday in May.
