Finding Faith During Easter Celebrations For many Christians, modern Easter celebrations would not be complete without bonnets, bunnies & colored eggs. As fun as those components can be, Christianity is at the heart of Easter. Easter Sunday marks the culmination of events that shaped the beliefs & teachings of an entire faith. Easter marks the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which Christians believe occurred within days of his crucifixion & burial. The New Testament indicates that the Resurrection of Jesus is one of the chief tenets of the Christian faith & established Jesus as the Son of God. Easter is an example that God will righteously judge the world by sacrificing His son for the sins of others. And any person who chooses to follow Jesus receives everlasting life thanks to Christ’s Resurrection. Easter is linked to the Jewish celebration of Passover due to its proximity on the calendar & the fact that Jesus was Jewish. The Bible states that Jesus participated in the Passover meal during The Last Supper. At The Last Supper, Jesus identified the matzo (bread) & wine as his body & blood, soon to be sacrificed & shed. Christians believe The Last Supper marked the first transubstantiation, or the turning of bread & wine into the actual substance of Christ’s body & blood. This also was the first celebration of the Eucharist & Holy Mass that would become another core component of the Christian faith. Easter is a time of great celebration that is preceded by Lent, a week-long period of reflection, prayer & repentance. The days immediately prior to Easter, known as Holy Week, encompasses Palm Sunday & lasts through Holy Thursday (the day of The Last Supper), Good Friday (when Jesus was crucified & placed in the tomb), & Holy Saturday (the 40-hour-long vigil that the followers of Jesus Christ held after his death & burial). On Easter Sunday, four women, including Mary Magdalene, went to Christ’s tomb to anoint his body with spices & oils. They found the tomb was empty & were met with an angel who told them that Jesus had been raised from the dead. A biblical account in John 20:14-16 indicates that Mary Magdalene was the first to speak with the risen Jesus. She mistakes Jesus for a gardener & says to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, & I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned & said to him, “Rabboni!” In regard to his apostle’s Simon Peter was the first to see the risen Christ. Easter is a time of joy & celebration, & a great opportunity for Christians to immerse themselves in their faith. Due to social distancing this year Easter will be different from past celebrations. Although “in-person” services are not available, we are encouraged to observe Easter and take advantage of online services offered through our individual churches & continue to connect with our families by phone, email or streaming services. Please see the church services page in this issue and again next week for information on where to watch services.

Things To Do During This Time Of Social Distancing Are you feeling bored, isolated while trying to abide the social distancing recommendation? Here are some ideas on how to take advantage of this time at home. Downsize - Whether you see a move in your next 3 months or your next 10 years, this is a great time to review what you have. Start to determine what you need for your next stage. Ask yourself what should I sell at the next yard sale or what should I donate? You can focus on one room at time (garage, office, etc.) or one type of item (like clothing, books, collectibles, etc.). Spring clean -This is the perfect time to do a thorough cleaning & disinfect your house. Make sure to wipe down all high touch surfaces like door knobs, light switches, phones, & remotes with properly certified disinfectants. Exercise - The weather has been warmer, so consider a walk outside. Want to stay in? Try a few balance & stretching exercises. Walking inside your house works too. Garden - Spring is here. This is a great time to clear winter from your flower beds, plan your vegetable garden or start your seedlings. Connect with others - Reach out to friends by giving them a call, setting up a video chat or writing a letter. It’s a great time to make sure your address book is up-to-date. Look into virtual groups such as a book club that meets online over Facebook or other video services. If you live with a spouse or friend, create a “stay-at-home date night, pull out the old photos, have a movie night, take a walk together, play meaningful music, read a book together, or play a board game. Learn something new - The internet is full of how-to-videos, instructions for new card games or information on exotic places. What is that thing you always wanted to know how to do? It’s never too late to learn a new language. Complete that unfinished project - We all have that project that just never has been completed. Scrapbooks, puzzles, cross stitch, sewing, model airplane, painting - now is the perfect time to tackle it. Or those little house projects - such as that trim that needs a little paint touch up, fixing that broken screen or oiling that squeaky door. Learn to meditate - Meditation can help you relax during this stressful time. Meditation has been shown to slow the heart rate, decrease blood pressure, reduce stress & improve digestive function. Some research also seems to indicate meditation can help preserve cognitive function, reduce depression & more. Take a virtual vacation - Watch a video on an exotic location or read a book about a place you always wanted to visit. Many museums around the world offer virtual tours. Try a new recipe (or several) - Plan some meals to freeze. A country you always wanted to visit? Pick a recipe that is traditional for that country. Or maybe it is just a cookbook that’s been sitting too long. Write your memoirs - Pull out those old photos and start writing about your life. Your children & grandchildren will love the stories you have and it is always fun to look back & reminisce.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that primarily affects movement. In the earliest stages of Parkinson’s, an affected person’s face also may show little or no expression & speech may become soft & slurred. According to Parkinson’s News Today, Parkinson’s is the second most common agerelated neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, Parkinson’s affects more people than multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy & ALS combined, & an estimated 10 million people worldwide have Parkinson’s disease. The Parkinson’s Foundation estimates that nearly one million people in the United States live with Parkinson’s disease in 2020. Age is a risk factor for Parkinson’s, but an estimated 4% of people with the disease are diagnosed before age 50. Many people are familiar with the symptoms of Parkinson’s, like tremors in the limbs. Slowed movement, or bradykinesia, also occurs over time. Rigid muscles, impaired posture & balance, & loss of automatic movements like blinking & swinging arms while walking also can occur, advises the Mayo Clinic. Like other neurodegenerative conditions, Parkinson’s is linked to changes in cells in the brain, which may gradually break down or die. Environmental triggers or genetics may also contribute to Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s also may be caused by shifting levels of the chemical messenger dopamine in the brain. When neurons break down, they produce less dopamine, & this causes abnormal brain activity. Parkinson’s has no cure, & treatment of the disease is designed to slow progression & treat certain symptoms. Parkinson’s patients & their families may be excited to learn that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration approved the use of a new medication known as Nourianz (istradefylline). It is recommended for “off” time, when symptoms return between other medication doses. Nourianz belongs to a class of medications known as adenosine A2A antagonists, which work differently from all currently available Parkinson’s drugs. This drug blocks the brain chemical adenosine, which boosts the signaling of dopamine, the brain chemical that decreases in Parkinson’s patients. The medication can be added to a regimen consisting of levodopa/carbidopa to decrease off times. Four placebo-controlled clinical trials, which included more than 1,000 participants, demonstrated a significant decrease in “off” time when Nourianz was added to levodopa/carbidopa. Levodopa is converted to dopamine in the brain. Carbidopa helps prevent the breakdown of levodopa before it can reach the brain & take effect. Parkinson’s patients can work with their doctors to find a regimen of drugs, therapy and support that may lessen their symptoms & improve their quality of life. For information about Parkinson’s visit www.parkinson.org.
How To Protect Dogs From Lyme Disease Lyme disease is a potentially dangerous condition transmitted by the passing of bacteria from deer ticks to their unsuspecting hosts. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention says Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the U.S. Tens of thousands of people are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year. But it also affects animals, including popular house pets like dogs. Lyme disease can be difficult to detect & cause serious & recurring health problems. The American Veterinary Medical Assoc. says the best way to protect pets is to emphasize prevention. • Speak with your veterinarian about a tick preventive product that is right for your dog. These can include repellant collars, topical treatments & ingestible medications. • Vets may recommend vaccination against Lyme disease if you live in an area that is home to high tick populations. Recommendations also may be based on your pet’s lifestyle & overall health, among other factors. • Address conditions in the yard that are conducive to ticks. Mowing the lawn regularly is one way to make the backyard less attractive to ticks, as is removing leaf litter. • Keep a clean home & landscape. Rodents & other wildlife can carry deer ticks. Securing trash cans, picking up food scraps, removing hiding spots & potential dens, and other strategies can keep these carriers away. • Conduct a daily tick check if your dog spends time outside. Pay attention to bumps on the skin & part the fur so you can see where the coat meets the skin. Don’t forget to look in the ears. • When possible, avoid areas where ticks may be found, such as tall grasses, wooded areas & marshes. Stick to trails when spending time in wooded areas. Dogs with Lyme disease may exhibit various symptoms. These include loss of appetite, fever, joint swelling, decreased activity, & lameness. Visit the vet promptly if symptoms occur & do not abate, or are causing considerable distress for your pet. Lyme disease is a concern for pets. Avoidance, preventive measures & outdoor maintenance can help reduce the likelihood that pets will contract Lyme disease.

Need For Blood Donations Urgent During Pandemic Effects of the international COVID-19 pandemic have been widespread, including cancellations of blood drives & donation appointments as people have shifted to working from home & sheltering in place. As of mid-March, the nation’s blood centers saw more than 12,000 blood drives cancelled, resulting in nearly 355,000 fewer blood donations. The Rock River Valley Blood Center quickly responded to sound the alarm for the dire need for donations to maintain the local blood supply. On a normal basis, the Blood Center needs to see 700 donors/week as the only supplier of blood & blood products to 10 regional hospitals & medical centers. Community members have responded – the Blood Center saw 133 first-time donors at their fixed sites the week of March 16. That’s one of many examples of individuals stepping forward to help others in need during times of crisis. Blood Center officials are asking people to consider scheduling their donations in the coming days & weeks, as this is expected to be an ongoing crisis. Blood has a short shelf life (42 days for whole blood & five days for platelets), & it’s the blood already on the shelves that saves lives. “We have been thrilled by the community response to the need for blood so far - it’s been amazing to see the outpouring of support from our longtime donors, first-time donors & individuals coming back to donate after time away,” said Lisa Entrikin, CEO of the RRVBC. “What we’re trying to stress now is the need for blood will be urgent for weeks & months to come.” What can you do to help? Anyone feeling healthy & well must first schedule an appointment to donate blood. Appointments help the Blood Center minimize crowds at their donor centers in Rockford, Belvidere, & Freeport, & manage the flow of donors to follow federal guidelines on social distancing. Only healthy people should attempt to donate. The Blood Center is asking people to stay home if they don’t feel well, have any COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough or shortness of breath), or have traveled outside the U.S. in the last 14 days. “We have taken extra precautions at our centers to protect our staff & our donors. During this unique time, we ask for your patience & flexibility when scheduling an appointment,” said Heidi Ognibene, the Blood Center’s director of operations. “Know that we continue to monitor federal, state, & local guidelines to ensure the safety of our community while still fulfilling the ongoing need for blood.” Blood is needed every day for: Accident victims, newborns & transfusions; treatment of cancer patients & during organ transplants & surgeries; during cardiac surgery, for burn victims & to treat bleeding disorders. Donating is safe & simple, one unit can save up to 3 lives. You can donate a single unit (whole blood donation, the most common type) every 56 days. To encourage donations, blood centers statewide launched the #GiveBloodChallenge. Individuals are asked to take a photo during their donation, post the photo to social media using hashtag #GiveBloodChallenge, & tag the blood center & 10 friends challenging them to donate. If you are 17 years old (or 16 with parental permission), in good health, & weigh at least 110 lbs., you may be eligible to donate blood. The process consists of a health screening, donation time & snack. Plan for about an hour of time (the actual donation time is only about 5-10 minutes). Visit rrvbc.org or call 815-965-8751 to schedule an appointment or for more information.
Tips To Successfully Grow Tomatoes Tomatoes are among the most popular fruit or vegetable plants grown in home gardens. Red, ripe tomatoes have a delicious, juicy flavor that serves as the basis for all sorts of recipes. And since tomatoes can just as easily be grown in a full garden or in a container on a patio or balcony, tomatoes appeal to gardeners regardless of their living situations. While tomatoes are relatively easy to grow, they are prone to certain problems & pests. Knowledge of what to expect when planting tomatoes & how to start off on the right footing can help produce a season’s worth of delicious bounty. • Wait until after the last average frost date. Tomatoes can be grown from seeds in warm areas, but starting seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date is recommended. Gradually introduce seedlings outdoors for a few hours a day, increasing the time outside & transplant outdoors when temperatures are consistently over 60 F. • Choose a sunny spot & space out plants. The experts at Better Homes & Gardens say to leave anywhere from 24”-48” between plants to accommodate for growth & ensure the plants will not get stunted. • Plant deeply. Tomatoes tend to root along their stems. If transplants are long & lean, dig a trench & lay the stem sideways in the dirt, & then bend the top of the plant upward. Snip off the lower branches & cover with soil up to the first set of leaves. This will produce extra root growth & stronger, more vital plants. • Give the plants support. Tomato cages or stakes can help keep the leaves & fruit from touching the ground, which can cause rot and, eventually, death to the tomato plant. • Lay down a layer of mulch. Tomatoes grow best when the soil is consistently moist. Mulch can help retain moisture & help prevent soil & soil borne diseases from splashing on the leaves & plants when it rains. While you amend the soil, make sure that it drains well & is slightly acidic. • Prune away suckers. Tomatoes produce “suckers,” which are leaves that shoot out from the main stem. Removing these leaves promotes air circulation & keeps the plant’s energy focused on growing fruit.
