There are in general three easy ways to plan for the “not if”, but when the event of death occurs. First, I implore everyone to have a discussion with their family and loved ones on their desires we call this “Having the talk of a lifetime”. The basic footprint is a decision on burial, cremation or anatomical donation to science. These are the disposition of the body. The ceremony is for those left behind, for the survivors, our loved ones and family. The service may be formal or informal; religious or secular; simple or elaborate. The location can vary from a church or worship center, our funeral home setting, your home or other locations permitting. What is important is that there is a ceremony to honor a life well lived, to take pause and to reflect on the impact that your life has had on others; and an opportunity to celebrate the blessings. This is an important first step and the desires can be recorded and kept on file not only at home but at the funeral home as well. Second, Taking the above and working adding some more detail. These details can include scripture passages, poems, other literary pieces that help give understanding or aid in giving a message. Music is yet another element. It has been said that music describes that which has no words. Music can be a powerful tool in helping us to grieve and find hope. Another item is a luncheon or reception following the ceremony to be in community with each other; a continuation of sharing in our loss while nourishing our body is healthy. Choosing an urn, casket, remembrance folder and other related items can be done as well. Third, Prepaying for the above. There are several benefits related to paying for final care expense. The State of Illinois allows for the prepayment of funeral expense to help qualify for certain state benefits regarding Medicaid. There is peace of mind that comes with knowing that what will happen, has been financially planned and provided; your wishes, your way. Preplanning and paying is a tremendous gift to family and loved ones. Let’s face it, when death comes the timing is unknown and uncertain. Besides the emotion that comes with grief, there are other concerns of our own such as notifying our employer, arranging for child care, notifying relatives and the other daily responsibilities that are magnified at a time such as this. Everything seems to be caught in a whirlwind. By preplanning, you are able to take pause, catch your breath and implement the plan that has lovingly been put in place. Preplanning then allows you to focus on the other elements of life that continue. So there you have it...the fifty thousand foot view of planning for final care. Gas Grill Safety Tips Backyard barbecues are a warm weather tradition. While some brave men & women grill year-round, many reserve their outdoor cooking to those times of year when the weather fully cooperates. The laid back vibes of spring, summer and early fall can make it easy for grillmasters to overlook safety when cooking outside. But grilling requires that cooks prioritize safety. While both charcoal & gas grills can cause fires, the National Fire Protection Association says gas grills contributed to four out of five grill fires. The NFPA also notes that many of those gas grill-related fires can be traced to leaks or breaks in the hoses. The following are a handful of ways cooks can safeguard themselves, their families, their grills, & their homes against leaks or breaks in their gas grill hoses. • Inspect hoses at the start of each grilling season. Leaks, breaks or cracks in the hoses may occur when moving grills into the garage or shed for the winter. So it’s a good idea to inspect the hoses at the start of each season before using the grill for the first time each year. • Employ soap & water if you suspect but cannot find any leaks. Travelers Insurance recommends that men & women who suspect a leak is present but cannot find one apply a light solution of soap & water to the hose. If there is a leak, bubbles will appear. • Do not turn on the gas if the grill lid is closed, gas can build up inside & potentially ignite, causing the lid to blow off. So men & women should always make sure the lids of their grills are open before turning on the gas. • Stop grilling if you smell gas & see no flame. If there is no flame, but you still smell gas, turn off the tank & grill immediately. Some leaks may cease, at which time you can take your tanks to be serviced. If the leak persists, contact the local fire department. • Turn off the grill & cease cooking if you smell gas while food is on the grill. The odor of gas while cooking is another telltale sign of a leak, even if there is a flame & food appears to be cooking. Contact the local fire department if such a situation presents itself. • Close the valve after cooking. Always make sure the valve is tightly closed after cooking. • Store tanks away from the house. Propane tanks should always be stored away from the house. Near the end of each grilling season, homeowners may want to use what’s left of the gas in their propane tanks so they don’t have to store tanks over the winter. Grilling with gas can make for delicious meals, but you must prioritize safety around your gas grill to prevent fires & other accidents.

Elderly Susceptible To The Heat According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, people ages 65 & older are more prone to heat stroke & heat-related stress than those of other ages. Seniors’ bodies are not able to adjust to sudden changes in temperature as quickly as younger people’s. A chronic condition that affects the body’s response to heat, as well as taking certain prescription medications also may play a role in seniors’ susceptibility to the heat. There are different types of heat-related injuries, though heat exhaustion & heat stroke are the most common. Here are signs that a person may be experiencing one or the other. Heat Exhaustion - weakness, tiredness, heavy sweating, paleness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fainting, fast, weak pulse rate, headache, fast and shallow breathing Heat Stroke - extremely high body temperature (over 105 F), red, hot & dry skin, absence of sweat, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea What to do * Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages. Water and diluted fruit juices can help rehydrate the body quickly. * Restrict physical activity. * Take a cool shower or bath or wipe yourself down with a damp cloth. * Seek an air-conditioned environment. Visit a shopping mall, library or cooling center to keep cool. * Wear lightweight clothing. * Try to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day. * Wear hats or use an umbrella to shield your head from sunshine outdoors. * Eat cool foods, but avoid extremely cold foods. Otherwise you risk the chance of developing stomach cramps. * Do not do laundry or turn on appliances that contribute to extra indoor heat.
