Happy Birthday America! The Fourth of July - also known as Independence Day or July 4th - has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century & the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, & two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities from fireworks, parades & concerts to more casual family gatherings & barbecues. The tradition of patriotic celebration became more widespread after the War of 1812, in which the United States again faced Great Britain. In 1870, the U.S. Congress made July 4th a federal holiday; in 1941, the provision was expanded to grant a paid holiday to all federal employees. Over the years, the political importance of the holiday would decline, but Independence Day remained an important national holiday & a symbol of patriotism. Falling in mid-summer, the Fourth of July has since the late 19th century become a major focus of leisure activities & a common occasion for family get-togethers, often involving fireworks & outdoor barbecues. The most common symbol of the holiday is the American flag, & a common musical accompaniment is “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the national anthem of the United States. As fun as July 4th festivities typically are, injuries, particularly those involving fireworks, are a concern that celebrants should not take lightly. An estimated 11,000 people visited the emergency room for fireworks-related injuries in 2016, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. However, fireworks aren’t the only danger this time of year. In order to remain safe, individuals can heed these tips. • Do not drink & drive. Alcohol consumption may accompany Independence Day festivities. For those planning on using a car to get to & from parties, it is essential to designate a driver or utilize ride sharing services or taxis.

How Can I Help?
• Swim smartly. Always swim with a buddy, & consider hiring a lifeguard if you’ll be hosting a pool party. Adults also should not swim intoxicated, as it can impede the ability to stay afloat & may lead to risky behaviors. • Leave fireworks to the professionals. Watch a public fireworks display instead of lighting fireworks on the street or in the backyard. • Exercise caution with sparklers. Running around with sparklers in hand could be a recipe for disaster, as sparklers burn extremely hot. Keep a bucket of water handy to properly extinguish the sparklers. • Review safe boating practices. If July 4th festivities find you out on the water, be sure that life jackets are worn & set boating & water safety rules for the family. • Check in with a vet. The Fourth can be traumatic for pets not accustomed to fireworks, loud noises or crowds. Behavior therapy, medication & ensuring that pets do not run away from home & get lost may be necessary.

How To Handle Social Distancing At The Park Social distancing has changed the way people live. But as many areas began to reopen on a limited basis, returning to some semblance of normalcy became possible. Cabin fever has affected everyone since stay-athome guidelines were issued in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. So it’s no surprise that homebound adults & kids rejoiced when local parks reopened. Though parks may have reopened, the National Recreation & Park Assoc. notes that it’s still imperative that park visitors adhere to social distancing guidelines in place at the park.

• Avoid parks if you’re exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. Anyone experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 is urged to stay home & avoid public places, including parks. The CDC notes that people with these symptoms or combinations of these symptoms may have COVID-19: Cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing In addition, the CDC says people with at least two of these symptoms may have COVID-19: Fever, chills, repeated shaking with chills, headache, muscle pain, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell

• Follow the CDC guidelines on personal hygiene prior to visiting parks or trails. Wash hands with soap & water for at least 20 seconds before leaving your home to visit a park. If you sneeze or blow your nose en route to the park, apply a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol before getting out of your car. While at the park, wear a cloth face covering that fits snugly but comfortably against the side of your face. Make sure it can be secured with ties or ear loops & allows for breathing without restriction. In hot weather, avoid visiting the park if you do not think you can move around & breathe comfortably while wearing a mask. • Share the trails & walking paths with others, letting them know when you plan to pass & giving them ample space to pass if they need to. This includes following CDC guidelines on social distancing, which recommend maintaining a minimum of six feet from other persons at all times. • Use the restroom before leaving your home. Many parks are limiting access to restrooms to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. So it’s wise for park visitors to relieve themselves at home before going to the park. • Bring your own water. The NRPA notes that water fountains likely won’t be accessible at the park. So visitors should bring their own water so they can stay hydrated during their hikes. Visiting a favorite park while social distancing will be different. But there are many ways to stay safe & still enjoy the park for all it has to offer.

The immune system is a powerful component of the human body. The immune system recognizes when viruses, bacteria & other foreign invaders enter or compromise the body, & then takes action to prevent illnesses from taking over. The average person can help his or her immune system do its job more effectively by making the immune system as strong as it can be. Harvard Medical School says that diet, exercise, age, & psychological stress may affect immune system response. Certain lifestyle choices can promote a strong immune system. • Get adequate sleep. Doctors believe sleep & immunity are closely tied. A study of 164 healthy adults published by the National Institutes of Health found those who slept fewer than six hours each night were more likely to catch a cold than people who slept for more than six hours. • Increase your intake of fruits & vegetables. Fruits & vegetables supply the powerhouse antioxidants that are essential for protecting a body against free radicals. Free radicals may play a role in heart disease, cancer & other diseases. Serve fruits & vegetables with every meal to ensure you’re getting antioxidant-rich foods. • Consume fiber & fermented foods. Fiber can help feed the gut microbiome, which is linked to a robust immune system. The microbiome may prevent harmful pathogens from entering the body through the digestive tract. Data suggests that eating more fermented foods can strengthen & populate healthy bacteria in the gut. • Exercise regularly. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day, advises the American Heart Assoc. Thirty minutes of exercise each day can go a long way toward keeping the body healthy. Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs & airways. Exercise causes changes in antibodies & white blood cells. These antibodies & white blood cells circulate rapidly, so they may detect illnesses earlier than they would if you do not exercise. Body temperature also rises during exercise, which could naturally prevent bacteria from growing. • Try to minimize stress. According to Simply Psychology, when people are stressed, the immune system’s ability to fight off antigens is reduced, making people more susceptible to infections. The stress hormone corticosteroid can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system. Limiting stress through meditation & breathing exercises, or trying to remove stressors from one’s life, may help. A healthy immune system is vital to fending off or recovering from illness.

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention has recommended that people wear cloth face coverings in public settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. Even as the world begins to unpause, wearing masks seems likely to continue. Masks are designed not to prevent the wearer from getting ill, but to protect other people from getting the virus. Masks protect others from your germs when you cough or sneeze. They’re also an effective way to help people to avoid touching their faces. Masks are exposed to the elements & germs each time they are worn, meaning they will require cleaning. Even though Harvard Health suggests COVID-19 may live more readily on hard surfaces than fabric, the CDC urges people to give cloth face masks the same level of care as regular laundry. Masks should be washed & dried often. The CDC offers these tips on how to clean most cloth & fabric masks. • Fabric face masks should be washed depending on the frequency of use. More frequent use necessitates more frequent washing. • A washing machine should be adequate for properly washing a face covering. Choose a warm setting for water temperature. Place masks in the dryer afterward. • More delicate, hand-sewn masks may be washed by hand, suggests The Good Housekeeping Inst. Cleaning Lab. Lather masks with soap & scrub them for at least 20 seconds with hot water then place in the dryer. • For additional sanitation, iron masks on the cotton or linen setting for a few minutes to kill remaining germs. • If masks are fortified with a filter, such as a coffee or HVAC filter, keep in mind that these filters are designed for single use. Paper filters should be replaced after each use. HVAC filters are washable, but manufacturers warn that their effectiveness decreases with each wash. Various health agencies do not condone using steam or microwaves to clean cloth face masks, as these sanitizing techniques are not as effective as regular laundering. Also, never microwave non-fabric dust or N95 respirator masks if you are using them. They can catch fire or be rendered useless. Cloth face masks can help safeguard against germs like the novel coronavirus. However, they need to be cleaned regularly to remain sanitary.
